Abstract: An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 A MeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract: We present a model-independent method to reconstruct the impact parameter distributions of experimental data for intermediate energy heavy ion collisions, adapted from a recently proposed approach for ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The method takes into account the fluctuations which are inherent to the relationship between any experimental observable and the impact parameter in this energy range. We apply the method to the very large dataset on heavy ion collisions in the energy range 20-100 MeV/nucleon obtained with the INDRA multidetector since 1993, for two observables which are the most commonly used for the estimation of impact parameters in this energy range. The mean impact parameters deduced with this new method for "central" collisions selected using typical observable cuts are shown to be significantly larger than those found when fluctuations are neglected, and as expected the difference increases as bombarding energy decreases. In addition, we will show that this new approach may provide previously inaccessible experimental constraints for transport models, such as an estimation of the extrapolated mean value of experimental observables for b = 0 collisions. The ability to give more realistic, model-independent, estimations of the impact parameters associated to different experimental datasets should improve the pertinence of comparisons with transport model calculations which are essential to better constrain the equation of state of nuclear matter., 14 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: International audience; Profiting from previous works done with the INDRA multidetector on the description of the light response L of the CsI( Tl ) crystals to different impinging nuclei, we propose an improved ΔE−L identification-calibration procedure for Silicon–Caesium Iodide (Si–CsI) telescopes, namely an Advanced Mass Estimate ( AME ) method. AME is compared to the usual, simple visual analysis of the corresponding two-dimensional map of ΔE−E type, by using INDRA experimental data from nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions in the Fermi energy regime. We show that the capability of such telescopes to identify both the atomic Z and the mass A numbers of light and heavy reaction products, can be quantitatively improved thanks to the proposed approach. This conclusion opens new possibilities to use INDRA for studying these reactions especially with radioactive beams. Indeed, the determination of the mass for charged reaction products becomes of paramount importance to shed light on the role of the isospin degree of freedom in the nuclear equation of state [ 1,2 ].

Abstract: By using freeze-out properties of multifragmenting hot nuclei produced in quasifusion central $^{129}$Xe+$^{nat}$Sn collisions at different beam energies (32, 39, 45 and 50 AMeV) which were estimated by means of a simulation based on experimental data collected by the $4\pi$ INDRA multidetector, heat capacity in the thermal excitation energy range 4 - 12.5 AMeV was calculated from total kinetic energies and multiplicities at freeze-out. The microcanonical formulation was employed. Abstract: Neutron induced reactions on oxygen have been studied with strong interest because of the uncertainties generated on the helium production in fuel and on the neutron multiplication factor in nuclear reactors [1], [2]. Still large discrepancies exist and new measurements are welcome in order to acquire new data aiming at the uncertainty reduction [3]. SCALP (Scintillating ionization Chamber for ALPha particle production in neutron induced reaction) is a new scintillating ionization chamber [4] used as an active target to measure the cross section of (n, alpha) reactions on various gaseous targets such as 19F or 16O, from the reaction threshold up to 15 MeV. It consists of an ionization chamber filled with CF4 (for fluorine measurements) or CF4+CO2(for oxygen measurements) allowing the detection of the energy deposed by the light charged particles emitted in the (n, alpha) reaction. In addition, four Photo- Multiplier Tubes detect the scintillation light produced by the interaction of the particles in the gas active volume. Taking advantage of the fast response of the scintillation, the neutron kinetic energy can be inferred by time-of-flight measurements. SCALP is then well adapted to mono-energetic neutron beams or to white neutron beams that will be delivered at the NFS Facility [5]. Because of its good resolution, SCALP discriminates different channel outputs, enabling to disentangle the different reactions [6]. We will present the performances of the SCALP detector in terms of temporal and energetic features. We will also present tests made at the GENESIS plate-form at the LPSC Grenoble [7].

Abstract: The equation of state with light clusters for nuclear and stellar matter is determined using chemical equilibrium constants evaluated from the analysis of the recently published (Xe$+$Sn) heavy ion data, corresponding to three reactions with different isotopic contents of the emission source. The measured multiplicities are used to extract the thermodynamic properties, and an in-medium correction to the ideal gas internal partition function of the clusters is included in the analysis. This in-medium correction and its respective uncertainty are calculated via a Bayesian analysis, with the unique hypothesis that the different nuclear species in a given sample must correspond to a unique common value for the density of the expanding source. Different parameter sets for the correction are tested, and the effect of the radius of the clusters on the thermodynamics and on the chemical equilibrium constants is also addressed. It is shown that the equilibrium constants obtained are almost independent of the isospin content of the analysed systems. Finally, a comparison with a relativistic mean field model proves that data are consistent with a universal in-medium correction of the scalar $\sigma$-meson coupling for nucleons bound in clusters. The obtained value, $g_s/g_s^0 = 0.92 \pm 0.02$, is larger than that obtained in a previous study not including in-medium effects in the data analysis. This result implies a smaller effect on the binding energy of the clusters and, as a consequence, larger melting densities, and an increased cluster contribution in supernova matter., Comment: 29 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in J. Abstract: The modification of the ground state properties of light atomic nuclei in the nuclear and stellar medium is addressed, using chemical equilibrium constants evaluated from a new analysis of the intermediate energy heavy-ion (Xe$+$Sn) collision data measured by the INDRA collaboration. Three different reactions are considered, mainly differing by the isotopic content of the emission source. The thermodynamic conditions of the data samples are extracted from the measured multiplicities allowing for a parametrization of the in-medium modification, determined with the single hypothesis that the different nuclear species in a given sample correspond to a unique common value for the density of the expanding source. We show that this correction, which was not considered in previous analyses of chemical constants from heavy ion collisions, is necessary, since the observables of the analyzed systems show strong deviations from the expected results for an ideal gas of free clusters. Abstract: Equilibrium constants for Hydrogen and Helium isotopes as a function of density and temperature are measured in the framework of the study made by Qin et al. [Qin L et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 172701]. We review and comment on all stages of the analysis and conclude that our measurements are not inconsistent with Qin et al. results. Abstract: International audience; In nuclear thermodynamics, the determination of the excitation energy of hot nuclei is a fundamental experimental problem. Instrumental physicists have been trying to solve this problem for several years by building the most exhaustive 4π detector arrays and perfecting their calorimetry techniques. In a recent paper, a proposal for a new calorimetry, called “3D calorimetry”, was made. It tries to optimize the separation between the particles and fragments emitted by the quasiprojectile and the other possible contributions. This can be achieved by determining the experimental probability for a given nucleus of a nuclear reaction to be emitted by the quasiprojectile. It has been developed for the INDRA data. In the present work, we wanted to dissect and validate this new method of characterization of a hot quasiprojectile. So we tried to understand and control it completely to determine these limits. Using the Heavy Ion Phase Space Exploration (HIPSE) event generator and a software simulating the functioning of INDRA, we were able to achieve this goal and provide a quantitative estimation of the quality of the quasiprojectile characterization.

Abstract: Background: The isovector part of the nuclear equation of state remains partly unknown and is the subject of many studies. The degree of equilibration between the two main collision partners in heavy ion reactions may be used to study the equation of state since it is connected to isospin (N/Z) transport properties of nuclear matter. Purpose: We aim to test chemical equilibrium attainment by measuring isotopic characteristics of emitted elements as a function of impact parameter. Method: We study four Xe136,124+Sn124,112 reactions at 32 MeV/nucleon. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility. Combined (projectile+target) systems are identical for two studied reactions, therefore it is possible to study the path towards chemical equilibrium from different neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) entrance channels. The study is limited to identified isotopes detected in the forward part of the center of mass in order to focus on the evolution of projectile-like fragment isotopic content and the benefit of excellent detection performances of the forward part of the apparatus. Results: Light charged particle productions, multiplicities, and abundance ratios dependence against impact parameter are studied. It is measured to almost identical mean characteristics for the two Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions. Comparing all four studied systems it is shown that mean values evolve from projectile N/Z to projectile+target N/Z dependence. Those identical mean characteristics concern all light charged particles except He3 whose mean behavior is strongly different. Conclusions: Our inclusive analysis (no event selection) shows that N/Z equilibration between the projectile-like and the target-like is realized to a high degree for central collisions. The light charged particle production mean value difference between Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions is of the order of a few %. This slight difference could be explained by pre-equilibrium particle emission whose intensity may differ for the two reactions. This point is demonstrated using He3 mean characteristics whose production takes place before chemical equilibrium attainment. The realized N/Z balance between projectile-like and target-like does not imply a pure two-body mechanism. Indeed a midrapidity production of light charged particle does exist and its N/Z is different as compared to the projectile-like one: it is n enriched. This point is touched using He6 midrapidity production which is favored by the drift phenomenon.

Abstract: In the domain of Fermi energy, the hot nucleus temperature can be determined by using the energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles. But this method of measurement is not without difficulties both theoretical and experimental. The presented study aims to disentangle the respective influences of different factors on the quality of this measurement : the physics, the detection (a 4? detector array as INDRA) and the experimental procedure. This analysis demonstrates the possibility of determining from an energy spectrum, with an accuracy of about 10 %, the true apparent temperature felt by a given type of particle emitted by a hot nucleus. Three conditions are however necessary : have a perfect detector of particles, an important statistics and very few secondary emissions. According to the GEMINI event generator, for hot nuclei of intermediate mass, only deuterons and tritons could fill these conditions. This temperature can allow to trace back to the initial temperature by using an appropriate method. This determination may be better than 15 %. With a real experimental device, an insufficient angular resolution and topological distortions caused by the detection can damage spectra to the point to make very difficult a correct determination of the apparent temperature. Abstract: An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 AMeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract: Background: We study heavy-ion reactions from barrier up to Fermi energy. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility.Purpose: We aim to determine the reaction and fusion cross sections for the reactions induced by $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}$ projectiles on $^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ targets for incident energies ranging from $8A$ to $35A$ MeV. In particular, the evaluation of the fusion and incomplete fusion cross sections is the main purpose, altogether with the comparison with the systematics of Eudes et al. [Europhys. Lett. 104, 22001 (2013)].Method: The reaction cross sections are evaluated at each beam energy with data acquired thanks to the INDRA $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ array. The events are sorted with the help of the observable ${E}_{\text{iso,max}}$. We focus therefore our study on a selected sample of events, in such a way that the fusion and incomplete fusion cross sections can be estimated.Results: We present the excitation function of reaction and fusion cross sections for the heavy and nearly symmetric system $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}+^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ from $8A$ to $35A$ MeV. For the fusion excitation function the comparison with the systematics of Eudes et al. seems to be in a fair agreement starting from the beam energy $20A$ MeV. For the lower beam energies ($8A$ and $12A$ MeV) discrepancies are observed.Conclusions: The evaluated fusionlike cross sections show a good agrement with a recent systematics for beam energies greater than $20A$ MeV. For low beam energies the cross-sectional values are lower than the expected ones. A probable reason for these low values is in the fusion hindrance at energies above or close to the barrier.

Abstract: L’objet de cet article est de proposer un procede de controle de la contamination surfacique, principalement due au tritium, a l’aide d’une mesure par scintillation liquide effectuee sur des frottis humides solubles. La mesure, realisee in-situ grâce a un appareil compact, le TriathlerTM , fournit des resultats dans un delai de l’ordre de quelques minutes. A ce jour, ce type de realisation est limite au laboratoire d’analyses specialise disposant d’appareils sophistiques. Cette methode propose une nouvelle approche, minimisant le temps de realisation et la complexite associee, tout en preservant des seuils de mesure compatibles avec les exigences. Bien que centree sur la problematique de colis radioactifs transportes par la route et presentant une possible contamination au tritium, cette etude peut aussi fournir une base de reflexion pour tout autre domaine ou le controle de la contamination revet une importance certaine. Abstract: We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. Abstract: In 129 Xe+ nat Sn central collisions from 8 to 25 MeV/A, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. We show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. The sequence of fragment production is determined. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. A comparison with Coulomb trajec-tory calculations shows that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming quasi-simultaneous above excitation energy E * = 4.0$\pm$0.5 MeV/A. This transition from sequential to simultaneous break-up was interpreted as the signature of the onset of multifragmentation for the three-fragment exit channel in this system., Comment: 12 pages; 13 Figures; 4 Table; Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract: Isospin diffusion is probed as a function of the dissipated energy by studying two systems 58 Ni +58 Ni and 58 Ni +197 Au , over the incident energy range 52-74A MeV. Experimental data are compared with the results of a microscopic transport model with two different parameterizations of the symmetry energy term. A better overall agreement between data and simulations is obtained when using a symmetry term with a potential part linearly increasing with nuclear density. The isospin equilibration time at 52 A MeV is estimated to 130 ± 10 fm/c.

Abstract: The relative velocities and relative angles between massive fragments emitted in heavy-ion nuclear reactions have been studied as a tool to discriminate between two extreme break-up mechanisms in the intermediate energy regime. Considering a chain of sequential decays and a simultaneous break-up of an excited nuclear system, we show that the behaviour of the event distribution in the space of relative velocities and angles depends on the fragmentation mechanism, indicating the possibility of observing the transition from the binary-decay mechanism to the simultaneous cracking of nuclear systems.

Abstract: Light fragments (d, t, 3He,4He) were measured for central collisions of 112Sn+112Sn and 124Sn+124Sn at E/A=40 MeV. While individual isotope ratios depend strongly on the neutron-to-proton ratio of the entrance channel, the double ratio RH–He=[Y(d)Y(4He)]/[Y(t)Y(3He)] shows no such sensitivity. Within the assumptions of the Albergo thermometric technique, this independence is consistent with the attainment of full chemical equilibrium for each reaction at the same common temperature. However, the same independence is also predicted by calculations based on emission from an expanding emitting source, where the yield for the final double ratio is not obtained at a single well defined source temperature.

Abstract: We study nuclear stopping in central collisions for heavy-ion induced reactions in the Fermi energy domain, between $15$ and $100$ A\,\textrm{MeV}. Using the large dataset of exclusive measurements provided by the $4\pi$ array \emph{INDRA}, we determine the relative degree of stopping as a function of system mass and bombarding energy. We show that the stopping can be directly related to the transport properties in the nuclear medium. By looking specifically at free nucleons (here protons), we present for the first time a comprehensive body of experimental results concerning the mean free path, the nucleon-nucleon cross-section and in-medium effects in nuclear matter. It is shown that the mean free path exhibits a maximum at $\lambda_{NN}=9.5 \pm 2$ \textrm{fm}, around $E_{inc}=35-40$ A\,\textrm{MeV} incident energy and decreases toward an asymptotic value $\lambda_{NN}= 4.5 \pm 1$ \textrm{fm} at $E_{inc} = 100$ A\,\textrm{MeV}. After accounting for Pauli blocking of elastic nucleon-nucleon collisions, it is shown that the effective in-medium \emph{NN} cross section is further reduced compared to the free value in this energy range. Therefore, in-medium effects cannot be neglected in the Fermi energy range. Abstract: In Xe+Sn central collisions from 12 to 20 MeV/A measured with the INDRA 4$\pi$ multidetector, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. In this contribution, we show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. By comparison with Coulomb trajectory calculations, we show that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming compatible with quasi-simultaneous multifragmentation above 18 MeV/A., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, contribution to conference proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Nuclear fission and Fission-Product Spectroscopy

Abstract: The production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF's) from the four reactions 55A MeV $^{124,136}\mathrm{Xe}$ + $^{112,124}\mathrm{Sn}$ is studied with an experimental apparatus which is highly efficient for the detection of both charged particles and neutrons. The IMF's are more localized in the midvelocity region than are the light charged particles, and the detected multiplicity of IMF's depends linearly on the charge lost from the projectile and increases with the neutron excess of the system. Remnants of the projectile, with very little velocity reduction, are found for most of the reaction cross section. Isotopic and isobaric fragment yields in the projectile-velocity region indicate that charge-to-mass ratio neutralization is generally not achieved but is approached when little remains of the projectile. For all systems, the fragments found in the midvelocity region are substantially more neutron rich than those found in the velocity region dominated by the emission from the projectile. This observation can be accounted for if the midvelocity source (or sources) is either more neutron rich or smaller, with the same neutron-to-proton ratio, than the source with the velocity of the projectile. Taken together, the observations of this work suggest that the intermediate mass fragments are, to a large extent, formed by multiple neck rupture of the overlap material, a process which might enhance the neutron-to-proton ratio of the primary source material and/or limit the size of the sources. This scenario is reminiscent of low-energy ternary fission and one predicted by Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck calculations. However, these calculations predict too much velocity damping of the projectile remnant. The calculations improve, in this regard, when the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections and the cost of creating low density material are reduced. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Multiplicities of intermediate-mass fragments (IMFs), neutrons, and charged particles were measured for ${}^{112}\mathrm{Sn}{+}^{112}\mathrm{Sn}$ and ${}^{124}\mathrm{Sn}{+}^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ at $E/A\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}40\mathrm{MeV}$. Significantly different scalings of the mean IMF multiplicities with neutron and charged-particle multiplicities are observed for the two reactions. These differences can be qualitatively understood in terms of fragment emission from an expanding evaporating source for which the initial rates of cooling by neutron and light-charged-particle emission depend on the neutron and proton numbers of the source according to statistical expectations.

Abstract: Distributions of the largest fragment charge, Zmax, in multifragmentation reactions around the Fermi energy can be decomposed into a sum of a Gaussian and a Gumbel distribution, whereas at much higher or lower energies one or the other distribution is asymptotically dominant. We demonstrate the same generic behavior for the largest cluster size in critical aggregation models for small systems, in or out of equilibrium, around the critical point. By analogy with the time-dependent irreversible aggregation model, we infer that Zmax distributions are characteristic of the multifragmentation time-scale, which is largely determined by the onset of radial expansion in this energy range., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters on 8/4/2013

Abstract: Isospin e ffects on multifragmentation properties were studied thanks to nuclear collisions between di fferent isotopes of xenon beams and tin targets. It is shown that, in central collisions leading to multifragmentation, the mean number of fragments and their mean kinetic energy increase with the neutron-richness of the total system. Comparisons with a stochastic transport model allow to attribute the multiplicity increase to the multifragmentation stage, before secondary decay. The total charge bound in fragments is proposed as an alternate variable to quantify preequilibrium emission and to investigate symmetry energy e ffects., Comment: 10 pages. 6 figures. Abstract: Collisions of Xe+Sn at beam energies of $E/A$ = 8 to 29 $MeV$ and leading to fusion-like heavy residues are studied using the $4\pi$ INDRA multidetector. The fusion cross section was measured and shows a maximum at $E/A$ = 18-20 $MeV$. A decomposition into four exit-channels consisting of the number of heavy fragments produced in central collisions has been made. Their relative yields are measured as a function of the incident beam energy. The energy spectra of light charged particles (LCP) in coincidence with the fragments of each exit-channel have been analyzed. They reveal that a composite system is formed, it is highly excited and first decays by emitting light particles and then may breakup into 2- or many- fragments or survives as an evaporative residue. A quantitative estimation of this primary emission is given and compared to the secondary decay of the fragments. Abstract: The light output response of CsI(Tl) scintillators, photodiodes readout, has been investigated for heavy ions with atomic number 3⩽ Z ⩽54 for energies up to 45 MeV/u. The detectors have been calibrated with particular attention to the dependence on the atomic number of the ions. The expression obtained with this procedure was applied to the calibration of the CsI(Tl) detectors of the MULTICS array, on the basis of only one renormalization coefficient. A complete compatibility has been found with recent data at energies up to 60 MeV/u.

Abstract: A new detector system dedicated for very/super heavy elements (VHE/SHE) detection that decay by spontaneous fission is presented. Such a decay mode of nuclei can be found e.g. in the region of Z ≈100 (Fermium). Future experiments realized in the frame of French-Polish collaboration at the cyclotrons in GANIL and in the Heavy Ion Laboratory (HIL), University of Warsaw, is described. The results of test measurements made in the HIL for reactions 20 Ne (8 A . MeV )+120 Sn , 179 Au are presented.

Abstract: The response function of 2-cm-thick CsI(Tl) scintillators with photodiode readouts were studied by directly exposing the detectors to beams of heavy ions (2≤Z≤36) with energy up to 25 MeV/u. The dependence of the light output on the energy (E) as well as on the atomic number and the mass of the ion is analyzed and discussed, and a parameterization of the light output as a function of Z and E is proposed.

A close examination of the multiplicities of light products in the forward part of phase space clearly shows an influence of the isospin of the target on the neutron richness of these products. A progressive isospin diffusion is observed when collisions become more central, in connection with the interaction time.
