Developing doping technologies for the channel region of CMOS devices for 180 nm technology and beyond requires accurate profiles of electrically active dopants. We have recently improved the accuracy of spreading resistance profiles on sub-80 nm source/drain boron implants. Previous SRP analyses ignored the fact that, in ultra-shallow source/drain structures, the sheet resistance dominates measured spreading resistance values. Because these SRP measurements are made at the edge of a doped layer, this implies that an additional sheet resistance edge correction should be applied to measured spreading resistance data. In this paper, we extend these improved spreading resistance corrections to the analysis of a variety of channel doping technologies. We examine sub-80 nm source/drains made with boron implants and study the implications of the new analysis. We also compare channel doping (V/sub T/) profiles with profiles obtained by a highly repeatable MOS-CV method.

In the past, resistivity and carrier density profiles derived from spreading resistance measurements have been satisfactorily verified by comparing a doped layer’s measured sheet resistance, ρs, with a sheet resistance value calculated from the on-bevel resistivity profile. However, this verification process has been found to fail in the case of ultrashallow (

Over the years, several methods have emerged for determining the probe contact radius in spreading resistance measurements. The methods vary from attempting to determine the physical area of the probe contact to the use of the contact radius as a variable parameter determined from calibration data. The number of different methods has led to some confusion about the applicability of the different models. In this article, we examine the validity of the different models for various ultrashallow structures typically used in current device technology. Specifically, we examine several methods of determining the physical contact area from the existing probe mark. These methods include circumscribing all visible microcontacts, determining the width of the probe mark in the measurement direction, and a summation of the contribution from all microcontacts. We further examine various electrical models for determination of the probe contact, including a calibration curve fit and a determination based on a known sample profile.

The spreading resistance profiling (SRP) method has undergone significant improvements over the last five years, enhancing the techniques’ capability for profiling sub-100 nm junctions. Newly developed procedures for conditioning probes, preparing beveled surfaces, and processing the raw data now yield a high degree of success. We believe that the sample preparation technique determines the quality of the bevel surface and thus plays a key role in the repeatability and sensitivity of SRP measurements. Although some previous work has suggested that the diamond ground beveled surfaces used for these measurements involve significant surface damage and hence, a high surface state density, little work has been done to quantify bevel surface quality. In this article, Hg gate capacitance–voltage (C–V) and current–voltage (I–V) have been used for the first time to determine the electrical properties of the diamond-beveled surfaces. Diamond particle sizes ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 μm were used to bevel p silicon s...

Si (100) wafers were boron implanted using an xRLEAP ion implanter at energies of 0.2, 1.0, and 3.0 keV all at a dose of 1×1014 cm−2. Advanced spreading resistance (SR) measurements were performed on the as-implanted samples to obtain high-resolution profiles of the damaged layer produced during implantation. The measured spreading resistance was highest at, or near, the surface on all samples. The 1.0 and 3.0 keV implants also showed minima in the SR near the substrate. The as-implanted samples were examined with secondary ion mass spectrometry to determine the dopant profile. Forward and reverse Schottky I–V measurements were also done on the same as-implanted samples with a mercury probe. The forward Schottky I–V curves for the 0.2 and 1.0 keV samples showed nonideal Schottky diode behavior. The 3.0 keV sample was similar to that of a good quality Schottky diode and had an ideality factor of 1.28. The reverse Schottky I–V data were processed to obtain the effective dielectric constants for each sample;...

Two monomeric N-substituted bisitaconimides, N,N′-bisitaconimido-p,p′-diphenylmethane and N,N′-bis(itaconimido-p,p′-diphenyl ether), were synthesized from the corresponding diamines. The synthesis was accomplished by reaction of the diamine with itaconic anhydride and cyclocondensation of the resultant bisitaconamic acid. Attempts to use p,p′-diaminodiphenylsulfone as the diamine gave N,N′-biscitraconimido-p,p′-diphenylsulfone and N-citraconimido-N′-itaconimido-p,p′-diphenylsulfone instead of the bisitaconimide. The two bisitaconimides polymerize thermally at 180°C and 225°C, respectively, and yield tough polymers with very high thermal stability.

Oviductal damage from infectious salpingitis is a principle cause of ectopic pregnancy. To examine the role of Chlamydia trachomatis in patients with ectopic pregnancy, 24 patients undergoing laparotomy for ectopic pregnancy were evaluated by assessment of chlamydial serology and chlamydial cultures of tubal biopsy specimens. The patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of gross abnormalities in the fallopian tube contralateral to the ectopic gestation. Ten patients in group I showed gross evidence of chronic salpingitis in the contralateral tube; 14 patients in group II had normal-appearing contralateral tubes. Chlamydial cultures were negative in both groups. Chlamydial immunoglobulin M antibodies assayed by indirect microimmunofluorescence were negative in both groups (less than or equal to 1:32). Mean geometric immunoglobulin G titers for C. trachomatis were significantly higher in the patients with evidence of contralateral chronic salpingitis (78.9 versus 13.1). These findings suggest that C. trachomatis may be a major cause of oviductal damage, which predisposes to ectopic pregnancy.

- Abstract
Background: The diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) by rectal suction biopsy (RSB) has cost implications that could be reduced by ascertaining the optimal number of specimens required. The aim was to audit our experience to optimise cost-effectiveness., Methods: Medical records of all patients who underwent an RSB between January 2018 and December 2021 were reviewed. In 2020, we transitioned from using the Solo-RBT to the rbi2 system (requiring single-use cartridges). Descriptive statistics were reported and a comparative analysis of the diagnostic efficacy of the Solo-RBT versus the rbi2 system was performed. The cost of consumables was calculated according to the number of specimens submitted., Results: Of 218 RSBs, 181 were first and 37 were repeat. The mean age at biopsy was 62 days (IQR 22-65). An average of two tissue specimens were obtained per biopsy. Of the 181 first biopsies, 151 were optimal and 30 suboptimal. HD was confirmed in 19 (10.5%) of the patients. Amongst biopsies where a single specimen was obtained, 16% were inconclusive, compared to 14% with two specimens and 5% with three specimens. The cartridges for the rbi2 system cost R530. If two cartridges are used at initial biopsy the total cost is double of a single tissue specimen sent for initial biopsy, and two specimens sent for repeat biopsies., Conclusion: In a low-resource setting, selecting the appropriate RSB system and obtaining a single specimen is sufficient to diagnose HD. Patients with inconclusive results should undergo a repeat biopsy where two specimens are obtained., (Copyright© Authors.)

Background: The purpose of this study is to describe all published studies of single-stage procedures for anorectal malformations and to perform a meta-analysis of studies that compared single-stage to staged procedures., Methods: Searches were conducted in Pubmed, Medline, Embase and CENTRAL. Meta-analysis was performed in RevMan and expressed as forest plots with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI)., Results: Thirty-eight studies were included in the narrative synthesis. Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis, representing 537 patients. The majority (70%) of patients included in this meta-analysis had either perineal or vestibular fistulas. Surgical site infection (SSI) was defined as any reported infection involving the neoanus (both superficial infection and dehiscence) and occurred in 51 of the 291 patients who underwent single-stage procedures, and 26 of the 244 patients who underwent staged procedure. Meta-analysis showed a 2.2 times higher risk of surgical site infection (SSI) amongst patients who undergo single-stage procedures (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.26, 3.92). Six of the 293 patients (2%) who underwent single-stage procedures required a rescue ostomy for wound dehiscence. In LMIC the risk of wound dehiscence was three-fold higher in single-stage (36/202) compared to staged procedures (12/126) (OR 3.07, 95% CI 1.42, 6.63). In HIC there was no evidence of an increased risk of wound dehiscence in patients who underwent a single-stage (15/91) compared to a staged procedure (14/118) (OR 1.51, 95% CI 0.65, 3.51). There is no evidence of a difference between single-stage versus staged procedures with regards to functional outcomes including voluntary bowel movements (79/90 versus 111/128), soiling (24/165 versus 20/203) or constipation (27/90 versus 36/128)., Conclusion: This systematic review provides further evidence that single-stage procedures for selected patients with anorectal malformations are safe. Whilst there is evidence of an increased risk of SSI, this did not translate to a significant difference in long-term functional outcomes., Levels of Evidence: Level II., (Copyright © 2022. - Abstract
Purpose: Surgery is a major risk factor for chronic opioid use among patients who had not recently been prescribed opioids. This study identifies the rate of, and risk factors for, persistent opioid use following laparoscopic cholecystectomy and open inguinal hernia repair in patients not recently prescribed opioids., Methods: This retrospective population-based cohort study included all patients who had not been prescribed opioids in the 6 months prior to undergoing open inguinal hernia repair or laparoscopic cholecystectomy from January 2013 to July 2016 in Ontario. Opioid prescription was identified from the provincial Narcotics Monitoring System and data were obtained from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. The primary outcome was persistent opioid use after surgery (3, 6, 9 and 12 months). Associated risk factors and prescribing patterns were also examined., Results: Among the 90,326 patients in the study cohort, 80% filled an opioid prescription after surgery, with 11%, 9%, 5% and 1% filling a prescription at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, respectively. Significant variability was identified in the type of opioid prescribed (41% codeine, 31% oxycodone, 18% tramadol) and in regional prescribing patterns (mean prescription/region range, 135-225 oral morphine equivalents). Predictors of continued opioid use included age, female gender, lower income quintile and being operated on by less experienced surgeons., Conclusion: Most patients who undergo elective cholecystectomy and hernia repair will fill a prescription for an opioid after surgery, and many will continue to fill opioid prescriptions for considerably longer than clinically anticipated. There is important variability in opioid type, regional prescribing patterns and risk factors that identify strategic targets to reduce the opioid burden in this patient population., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: The author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article., (© The British Pain Society 2021.)

- Abstract
Interventions that train parents to share picture books with children are seen as a strategy for supporting child language development. We conducted meta-analyses using robust variance estimation modeling on results from 19 RCTs (N
total = 2,594; Mchildage = 1-6 years). Overall, book-sharing interventions had a small sized effect on both expressive language (d = 0.41) and receptive language (d = 0.26). They had a large effect on caregiver book-sharing competence (d = 1.01). The impact of the intervention on child language was moderated by intervention dosage, with lower dosage associated with a minimal impact. Child age and caregiver education level were unrelated to child outcome. This review and meta-analysis confirms the promise of book-sharing interventions for enhancing and accelerating child language development., (© 2019 Society for Research in Child Development.)- Published

- Abstract
Background: Centralization of specialist services to urban centres presents a challenge to patients living in rural communities. The hepatopancreatobiliary surgery (HPB) program at Health Sciences North (HSN) is the tenth and newest HPB centre by Cancer Care Ontario and presents a unique opportunity to evaluate the barriers to delivering HPB cancer care to patients in northern Ontario., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of patients referred to the Northeastern Ontario Cancer Centre and HSN with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis between 2009 and 2015. July 2013 marked the inception of the HPB surgical program. Our primary outcome was time to HPB surgical consultation. Secondary outcomes included distance of travel and time to curative intent operation., Results: Our population consisted of 207 patients (98 pre-HPB v. 109 post-HPB). Median time to consultation with an HPB surgeon was decreased in the post-HPB group (43 v. 11 d, p < 0.001). An increased proportion of patients with pancreatic malignancies in the post-HPB group received HPB surgical consultations (34% v. 74%, p < 0.001), with decreased median distance travelled to surgical consultation (411 v. 79 km, p < 0.001). Time to curative intent operation or medical oncology consultation did not significantly increase., Conclusion: A new HPB program appears to have facilitated the proportion of patients with pancreatic malignancies at HSN receiving an HPB surgical consultation. Patients received complex surgeries, closer to their home regions. It is anticipated that these changes may affect overall outcomes and patient satisfaction and will be the focus of future investigations., Competing Interests: None declared., (© 2019 Joule Inc. or its licensors)
