CaZrO3and SrZrO3powders were prepared by sol-gel synthesis and plasma sprayed over the Inconel 718 substrate,forming a wear-resistant ceramic coating. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis of synthesized ceramic powders revealed the presence of CaZrO3and SrZrO3 phases, having an orthorhombic structure. CaZrO3 and SrZrO3powders were sprayed onto the surface of Inconel 718using a plasma spraying process. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)analysis of CaZrO3and SrZrO3coated samplesshowedanaveragethickness of about 400μm.Wear depth and wear mechanism for the above sampleswerestudiedusing Pin-on-disc apparatus. Wear results of CaZrO3 and SrZrO3 coated substrates revealed that high wear depths were observed at high speeds and loads. SEM investigations of worn-out samples revealed that both CaZrO3 and SrZrO3 coated samples had undergone delamination wear. CaZrO3 coated samples had exhibitedless delamination and wear depth than SrZrO3 coated samples, thus showing relatively better wear resistance.

The islands of the Caribbean are particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change due to their low-lying coastal areas and location within the Atlantic basin's hurricane belt. The UK Overseas Territory of Anguilla is one such island. The predicted increase in the severity of hurricanes and sea-level rise is highly likely to increase the flood risk of already vulnerable island communities. In this study, flood risk and erosion models are used to prioritise opportunity areas for nature-based restoration and to identify those that would have the greatest impact on coastal and in-land flood risk reduction. Two study sites in Anguilla were selected to highlight this ecologically-based modelling approach; Cove Bay and Pond, a degraded sand dune system and brackish pond, and the East End Pond, an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area that floods following heavy rainfall events. At the coastal site, the restoration of mangroves, sand dunes and coral reefs have the potential to provide flood risk reduction up to 500 m inland and protect homes, infrastructure and tourism developments. For the in-land East End Pond, areas of high erosion risk were predominately identified as bare or disturbed land within 1 km of the pond's basin. Habitat restoration of these areas was identified as having the greatest impact on reducing flood risk. The creation of flood risk, opportunity and impact models are invaluable tools that can be used to inform, advocate and justify the implementation of nature-based solutions to a range of stakeholders from policy-makers to local communties.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are widely used biocides in the field of medical and veterinary practice. Resistance to QACs is an emerging problem due to this widespread use. The present study was undertaken to detect the presence of genes that contribute to resistance to QACs in Staphylococcus aureus isolates obtained from udder surface and mastitis milk. A total 22 isolates of S. aureus were obtained from udder washings and milk of bovine mastitis cases. Among these, seventeen isolates were from udder wash samples and five isolates from clinical and subclinical cases of mastitis. Broth microdilution assay was performed to assess the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the isolates against Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a QAC. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done targeting qac A/B gene which codes for efflux pump which targets QACs. In the present study qac A/B gene was detected in seven out of 22 isolates of S. aureus. Three of these isolates were obtained from udder washings before milking and four, after milking. None of the S. aureus isolates from mastitis milk possessed the gene. The average minimum inhibitory concentration of qac A/B positive isolates against CTAB was 0.63 ± 0.55 μg/ml. The average MIC between qac A/B positive and negative isolates were statistically insignificant. The study points to the fact that multiple factors could be contributing to biocide resistance in S. aureus.

Ammonia (NH3) in the atmosphere affects both the environment and human health. It is therefore increasingly recognised by policy makers as an important air pollutant that needs to be mitigated, though it still remains unregulated in many countries. In order to understand the effectiveness of abatement strategies, routine NH3 monitoring is required. Current reference protocols, first developed in the 1990s, use daily samplers with offline analysis; however, there have been a number of technologies developed since, which may be applicable for high time resolution routine monitoring of NH3 at ambient concentrations. The following study is a comprehensive field intercomparison held over an intensively managed grassland in southeastern Scotland using currently available methods that are reported to be suitable for routine monitoring of ambient NH3. In total, 13 instruments took part in the field study, including commercially available technologies, research prototype instruments, and legacy instruments. Assessments of the instruments' precision at low concentrations (< 10 ppb) and at elevated concentrations (maximum reported concentration of 282 ppb) were undertaken. At elevated concentrations, all instruments performed well and with precision (r2 > 0.75). At concentrations below 10 ppb, however, precision decreased, and instruments fell into two distinct groups, with duplicate instruments split across the two groups. It was found that duplicate instruments performed differently as a result of differences in instrument setup, inlet design, and operation of the instrument. New metrological standards were used to evaluate the accuracy in determining absolute concentrations in the field. A calibration-free CRDS optical gas standard (OGS, PTB, DE) served as an instrumental reference standard, and instrument operation was assessed against metrological calibration gases from (i) a permeation system (ReGaS1, METAS, CH) and (ii) primary standard gas mixtures (PSMs) prepared by gravimetry (NPL, UK). This study suggests that, although the OGS gives good performance with respect to sensitivity and linearity against the reference gas standards, this in itself is not enough for the OGS to be a field reference standard, because in field applications, a closed path spectrometer has limitations due to losses to surfaces in sampling NH3, which are not currently taken into account by the OGS. Overall, the instruments compared with the metrological standards performed well, but not every instrument could be compared to the reference gas standards due to incompatible inlet designs and limitations in the gas flow rates of the standards. This work provides evidence that, although NH3 instrumentation have greatly progressed in measurement precision, there is still further work required to quantify the accuracy of these systems under field conditions. It is the recommendation of this study that the use of instruments for routine monitoring of NH3 needs to be set out in standard operating protocols for inlet setup, calibration, and routine maintenance in order for datasets to be comparable.

Abstract Seizures likely result from aberrant network activity and synchronization. Changes in brain network connectivity may underlie seizure onset. We used a novel method of rapid network model estimation from intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) data to characterize pre-ictal changes in network structure prior to seizure onset. We analyzed iEEG data from 20 patients from the iEEG.org database. Using 10 s epochs sliding by 1 s intervals, a multiple input, single output (MISO) state space model was estimated for each output channel and time point with all other channels as inputs, generating sequential directed network graphs of channel connectivity. These networks were assessed using degree and betweenness centrality. Both degree and betweenness increased at seizure onset zone (SOZ) channels 37.0 ± 2.8 s before seizure onset. Degree rose in all channels 8.2 ± 2.2 s prior to seizure onset, with increasing connections between the SOZ and surrounding channels. Interictal networks showed low and stable connectivity. A novel MISO model-based network estimation method identified changes in brain network structure just prior to seizure onset. Increased connectivity was initially isolated within the SOZ and spread to non-SOZ channels before electrographic seizure onset. Such models could help confirm localization of SOZ regions.

Herein, high capacitive supercapacitor performance of porous carbon electrode material obtained from waste banana bract was created by two-step chemical activation using KOH. Based on the findings of the structural analysis, the effective pore size contribution to the electrochemical performance in a neutral electrolyte (1M Na2SO4) was examined using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques on porous carbon samples activated at temperatures between 500 and 800°C and exhibiting Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface areas ranging from 22.9 to 513 m2g−1. The highest specific capacitance of 472 Fg−1 was obtained by the typical rectangular CV profile in the potential window range of -0.2 to +1 V for 800 °C. At 1 Ag−1, the high energy density of 86 Whkg−1 at 1.28 kWkg−1 of power density was reached with the capacitance retention of 93.5% at 5000 cycles at 10 Ag−1. These findings demonstrate the viability of using porous carbon from waste bracts in high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract Childhood aggressive behavior (AGG) has a substantial heritability of around 50%. Here we present a genome-wide association meta-analysis (GWAMA) of childhood AGG, in which all phenotype measures across childhood ages from multiple assessors were included. We analyzed phenotype assessments for a total of 328 935 observations from 87 485 children aged between 1.5 and 18 years, while accounting for sample overlap. We also meta-analyzed within subsets of the data, i.e., within rater, instrument and age. SNP-heritability for the overall meta-analysis (AGGoverall) was 3.31% (SE = 0.0038). We found no genome-wide significant SNPs for AGGoverall. The gene-based analysis returned three significant genes: ST3GAL3 (P = 1.6E–06), PCDH7 (P = 2.0E–06), and IPO13 (P = 2.5E–06). All three genes have previously been associated with educational traits. Polygenic scores based on our GWAMA significantly predicted aggression in a holdout sample of children (variance explained = 0.44%) and in retrospectively assessed childhood aggression (variance explained = 0.20%). Genetic correlations (r g ) among rater-specific assessment of AGG ranged from r g = 0.46 between self- and teacher-assessment to r g = 0.81 between mother- and teacher-assessment. We obtained moderate-to-strong r g s with selected phenotypes from multiple domains, but hardly with any of the classical biomarkers thought to be associated with AGG. Significant genetic correlations were observed with most psychiatric and psychological traits (range $$\left| {r_g} \right|$$ r g : 0.19–1.00), except for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Aggression had a negative genetic correlation (r g = ~−0.5) with cognitive traits and age at first birth. Aggression was strongly genetically correlated with smoking phenotypes (range $$\left| {r_g} \right|$$ r g : 0.46–0.60). The genetic correlations between aggression and psychiatric disorders were weaker for teacher-reported AGG than for mother- and self-reported AGG. The current GWAMA of childhood aggression provides a powerful tool to interrogate the rater-specific genetic etiology of AGG.

Multifunctional core@shell nanoparticles have been synthesized in this paper through 3 stages: NiFe2O4 nanoparticles by microwave irradiation using Pedalium murex leaf extract as a fuel, core@shell NiFe2O4@TiO2 nanoparticles by sol-gel, and NiFe2O4@TiO2@rGO by sol-gel using preprepared reduced graphene oxide obtained by modified Hummer’s method. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of both cubic NiFe2O4 spinel and tetragonal TiO2 rutile phases, while Raman spectroscopy analysis displays both D and G bands (ID/IG = 1.04) associated with rGO. Morphological observations by HRTEM reveal a core-shell nanostructure formed by NiFe2O4 core as confirmed by SAED with subsequent thin layers of TiO2 and rGO. Magnetic measurements show a ferromagnetic behavior, where the saturation magnetization drops drastically from 45 emu/g for NiFe2O4 to 15 emu/g after TiO2 and rGO nonmagnetic bilayers coating. The as-fabricated multifunctional core@shell nanostructures demonstrate tunable self-heating characteristics: rise of temperature and specific absorption rate in the range of ΔT = 3–10°C and SAR = 3–58 W/g, respectively. This effectiveness is much close to the threshold temperature of hyperthermia (45°C), and the zones of inhibition show the better effective antibacterial activity of NTG against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains besides simultaneous good efficient, stable, and removable sonophotocatalyst toward the TC degradation.

In this paper, study the preparation of Y-Fe alloy by reduction-diffusion process, which is novel technique for producing an alloy from its ores directly at different temperatures. From this work, investigates the particles size and morphology structure of alloy by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive-X-ray analyzer (EDAX) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) respectively. Here study the thermodynamics of property of system such as Gibbs free energy and reaction kinetics of system respectively. The Vibrating Sample magnetometer (VSM) is used to study the magnetic properties of alloy such as cocerviety, saturation magnetization and retentivity.

The Illumina Infinium® MethylationEPIC BeadChip system (hereafter EPIC array) is considered to be the current gold standard detection method for assessing DNA methylation at the genome-wide level. EPIC arrays are often used for hypothesis generation or pilot studies, the natural conclusion to which is to validate methylation candidates and expand these in a larger cohort, in a targeted manner. As such, an accurate smaller-scale, targeted technique, that generates data at the individual CpG level that is equivalent to the EPIC array, is needed. Here, we tested an alternative DNA methylation detection technique, known as bisulfite-based amplicon sequencing (BSAS), to determine its ability to validate CpG sites detected in EPIC array studies. BSAS was able to detect differential DNA methylation at CpG sites to a degree which correlates highly with the EPIC array system at some loci. However, BSAS correlated less well with EPIC array data in some instances, and most notably, when the magnitude of change via EPIC array was greater than 5%. Therefore, our data suggests that BSAS can be used to validate EPIC array data, but each locus must be compared on an individual basis, before being taken forward into large scale screening. Further, BSAS does offer advantages compared to the probe-based EPIC array; BSAS amplifies a region of the genome (∼500 bp) around a CpG of interest, allowing analyses of other CpGs in the region that may not be present on the EPIC array, aiding discovery of novel CpG sites and differentially methylated regions of interest. We conclude that BSAS offers a valid investigative tool for specific regions of the genome that are currently not contained on the array system.

Friction stir processing (FSP) has been accepted as a potential method to produce aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) without the drawbacks of liquid metallurgy methods. The present work focuses on the development of AMCs reinforced with quartz (SiO2) particles using FSP. Grooves with various dimensions were machined on AA6063 plates and compacted with quartz particles. A single pass FSP was carried out using a combination of optimized process parameters. The volume fraction of quartz particles in the AMCs was varied from 0 to 18 vol.% in steps of 6 vol.%. The developed AA6063/Quartz AMCs were characterized using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The quartz particles were distributed uniformly in the aluminum matrix irrespective of the location within the stir zone. The grains of the AA6063 were extensively refined by the combination of thermomechanical effect of FSP and the pinning effect of quartz particles. The dispersion of the quartz particles improved the microhardness and wear resistance of the AMCs. The role of quartz particles on the worn surface and wear debris is reported.

The theme of this work is to highlight the significance of green plant extracts in the synthesis of nanostructures. In asserting this statement, herein, we report our obtained results on the synthesis of hexagonal CdSe nanorods preferably oriented along (0002) plane through henna leaf extract-mediated reaction along with a discussion about the structural, morphological and optical properties of the synthesized nanorods. The possible mechanism for the synthesis of CdSe nanorods was explored. The formation of nanorods along (0002) plane was confirmed by the relatively high intensity of the (0002) peak in X-ray diffraction pattern. To account for the experimentally realistic condition, we have calculated the surface energies of hexagonal CdSe surface slabs along the low indexed (0002), (101¯0) and (112¯0) plane surfaces using density functional theory approach and the calculated surface energy value for (0002) surface is 802.7 mJ m−2, which is higher than (112¯0) and (101¯0) surfaces. On realizing the calculated surface energies of these slabs, we determined that the combination of (112¯0) and (101¯0) planes with lower surface energies will lead to the formation of CdSe nanorods growth along (0002) orientation. Finally, we argue that the design of new greener route for the synthesis of novel functional nanomaterials is highly desired.

Background Few studies have examined the contribution of specific disaster-related experiences to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Aims To examine the roles of peri-traumatic stress and distress due to lingering disaster-related disruption in explaining linkages between disaster exposure and PTSD symptoms among a cohort exposed to the 2010–2011 Canterbury (New Zealand) earthquakes. Method Structural equation models were fitted to data obtained from the Christchurch Health and Development Study at age 35 (n=495), 20–24 months following the onset of the disaster. Measures included: earthquake exposure, peri-traumatic stress, disruption distress and PTSD symptoms. In the present work, synthesis of nickel aluminate using Opuntia dilenii haw as plant extract by a microwave combustion method (MCM) and its comparison with the conventional combustion method (CCM) is investigated. O. dilenii haw plant extract simplifies the process, provides an alternative process for a simple and an economical synthesis. The absence of surfactant has led to a simple, cheap and fast method of synthesis of NiAl2O4 nanoparticles. The as-synthesized NiAl2O4 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) studies, high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), diffuses reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The XRD results confirmed the formation of the cubic phase NiAl2O4. The formation of pure nickel aluminate phase was confirmed by FT-IR. The formation of NiAl2O4 nanoparticles was confirmed by HR-SEM and HR-TEM and their possible formation mechanisms were also proposed. MCM could produce NiAl2O4 with uniform size and well-defined shape with crystallinity. The optical property was determined by DRS. NiAl2O4 prepared by the microwave combustion method was found to possess a higher surface area, lower crystallite size than the NiAl2O4 nanoparticles prepared by the conventional combustion method, which in turn has led to the improved performance toward the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde.

Critically ill people are unable to eat. What’s the best way to feed them? Nutrition authorities have long recommended providing generous amounts of protein and calories to critically ill patients, either intravenously or through feeding tubes, in order to counteract the catabolic state associated with this condition. In practice, however, patients in modern intensive care units are substantially underfed. Several large randomized clinical trials were recently carried out to determine the clinical implications of this situation. Contradicting decades of physiological, clinical, and observational data, the results of these trials have been claimed to justify the current practice of systematic underfeeding in the intensive care unit. This article explains and suggests how to resolve this conundrum.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a biomaterial with potential for applications in biomedical and tissue engineering; however, its brittle nature and high crystallinity limit its potential. Blending PHB with a variety of PEGs produced natural-synthetic composite films composed of FDA-approved polymers with significant reductions in crystallinity, from 70.1% for PHB films to 41.5% for its composite with a 30% (w/w) loading of PEG2000. Blending also enabled manipulation of the material properties, increasing film flexibility with an extension to break of 2.49±1.01% for PHB films and 8.32±1.06% for films containing 30% (w/w) PEG106. Significant changes in the film surface properties, as measured by porosity, contact angles, and water uptake, were also determined as a consequence of the blending process, and these supported greater adhesion and proliferation of neural-associated olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs). A growth rate of 7.2×105 cells per day for PHB films with 30% (w/w) PEG2000 loading compared to 2.5×105 for PHB films was observed. Furthermore, while cytotoxicity of the films as measured by lactate dehydrogenase release was unaffected, biocompatibility, as measured by mitochondrial activity, was found to increase. It is anticipated that fine control of PEG composition in PHB-based composite biomaterials can be utilised to support their applications in medicinal and tissue engineering applications.

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is widely used as a biomaterial in medical and tissue-engineering applications, a relatively high crystallinity limits its application. Blending PHB with ethyl-cellulose (EtC) was readily achieved to reduce PHB crystallinity and promote its degradation under physiological conditions without undue influence on biocompatibility. Material strength of composite films remained unchanged at 6.5 ± 0.6 MPa with 40% (w/w) EtC loadings. Phase separation between the two biopolymers was determined with PHB crystallinity decreasing from 63% to 47% for films with the same loading. This reduction in crystallinity supported an increase in the degradation rates of composite films from 0.39 to 0.81% wk−1 for PHB and its composite, respectively. No significant change in morphology and proliferation of olfactory ensheathing cells were observed with the composites despite significant increases in average surface roughness (Ra) of the films from 2.90 to 3.65 μm for PHB and blends with 80% (w/w) EtC, respectively.

Lithium nickelate and its lanthanum substituted compound have been successfully prepared by combustion synthesis process using LiNO3, Ni(NO3)2.6H2O and La(NO3)3.6H2O. Hexamine is used as fuel. The physicochemical properties of the powders were investigated by thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The crystalline powders were characterized for their phase identification using x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). FT-IR spectroscopy was used to study the local structure of the oxide environment. The morphological features of the powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DTA analysis reveals the evolution of an exothermic peak at 465 oC indicating the rapid decomposition of the hexamine and dissociation of nitrate salts, forming the final compound lithium nickealte. The XRD pattern reveals the rhombohedral structure of LiNiO2 with trigonal symmetry comprising of two interpenetrating close packed FCC sub-lattices. The lattice constant values ̒a̓ and ̒c̓ are in good agreement with the reported data. In the FT-IR spectra, vibrational bands are identified in the range of 400-800 cm-1 representing the NiO2 layer. LiNiO2 exhibits a very fine crystalline structure with an irregular morphology. The La substituted LiNiO2 powder has shown a smooth-edged polyhedral structure with an average particle size of 5-10 μm.
