The purpose of this study is to explore physiological and psychological changes immediately after a short-term visit to urban parks in an uncontrolled condition. Sixty park visitors completed a short questionnaire evaluating their subjective well-being (SWB) and donated a saliva sample immediately before and after their park visit. In addition, participants wore a pedometer to track their physical activity level during the park visit. Results indicated the levels of all biomarkers (cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA], and cortisol/DHEA ratio) decreased while SWB scores increased after the park visit. The duration of park visit was identified as a key variable significantly associated with cortisol reduction, and changes in SWB scores after the park visit were significantly associated with changes in cortisol level. A park visit duration of 21.8 min has the predictive ability to discriminate park visitors who exhibit reductions in cortisol levels after the park visit from those who do not.

A Bayesian adaptive design is proposed for a clinical trial in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The trial was designed to demonstrate treatment efficacy on an ambulatory-based clinical endpoint and to identify early success on a biomarker (dystrophin protein levels) that can serve as a basis for accelerated approval in the United States. The trial incorporates placebo augmentation using placebo data from past clinical trials. A thorough simulation study was conducted to understand the operating characteristics of the trial. This trial design was selected for the US FDA Complex Innovative Trial Design Pilot Meeting Program and the experience in that program is summarized.

This mixed method study investigated design thinking (DT) practices and outcomes from across disciplinary frameworks within one institution of higher education. Building upon prior DT studies, it examined three interlocking research questions: What DT practices are being implemented across the curriculum? What kinds of outcomes do faculty observe? What are the significant relationships between particular practices and observed outcomes? Thirty-five courses were examined via a faculty survey adapted from Liedtka and Bahr (2019), and a semi-structured interview created by Lake, Ricco, and Whipps (2018). In alignment with liberal arts educational practices, the most frequently utilized DT practices included working in teams that recognize diverse contributions and engaging in active listening in order to find shared meaning. Consistent with expectations for project- and team-based courses, faculty felt such practices yielded valued outcomes, concluding DT practices built trust across teams and increased the quality of solutions. Relationships between practices and outcomes revealed the utilization of more ethnographic tools was associated with a lower frequency of expanding relationships and resources, and that a greater focus on design criteria to find an ideal solution hampered efforts towards trust building. These findings suggest DT requires time and trust which can be constrained by the imposed deadlines of semester-based projects. The survey and interviews pointed to both similarities and differences between disciplines in DT practices. Future research investigating design thinking pedagogy should include faculty, students, and stakeholders with multiple touchpoints for assessment to identify learning experiences that build change-making capacities and yield genuinely valuable and viable real world projects.

What does Jane Addams's approach to social change offer to publicly engaged scholars and activists today? This essay explores several dimensions of Addams's work that have been misinterpreted and overlooked, putting these aspects of her work into conversation with research on endeavors to move higher education toward civic democratic engagement. The goal is to visualize opportunities and strategies for more inclusive and democratic engagement with issues across local, regional, and global communities. In particular, this essay explores how Addams's place-based, boundary-spanning methods of engagement provide strategies for more inclusive and collaborative philosophical activism, including (1) fostering and sustaining relationships across difference, (2) engaging with soft systems mapping, and (3) using synthetic imagination in crafting transdisciplinary engaged narratives. In conjunction with research on social change and creative innovation, Addams's work highlights the potential value of collaborative and democratic endeavors across difference as a means toward more radical imaginaries and relational revolution.

It emerges from a new generation of pragmatist feminists, illustrating how the field has evolved. These pieces locate pragmatist feminism in place- and issue-based philosophical activism. As an activist and pragmatically grounded philosophy, this approach values the embodied and relational nature of social change as well as the need to create multiple pathways of engagement situated in and across communities.

Optimization of host performance in cattle may be achieved through programming of the rumen microbiome. Thus, understanding maternal influences on the development of the calf rumen microbiome is critical. We hypothesized that there exists a shared microbial profile between the cow and calf rumen microbiomes from birth through weaning. Specifically, our objective was to relate the calf's meconium and rumen fluid microbiomes in early life to that of the cow rumen fluid prior to parturition and at weaning. Rumen fluid was collected from multiparous Angus crossbred cows (n = 10) prior to parturition and at weaning. Immediately following the parturition, meconium and rumen fluid were collected from the calf. Rumen fluid was collected again from the calf on day 2, day 28, and at weaning. The rumen fluid microbial profile and subsequent volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile were characterized using 16S rRNA sequencing and gas liquid chromatography, respectively. Microbial data was analyzed using QIIME2 and the GLM procedure of SAS was used to analyze the VFA profile. Alpha diversity was similar in the early gut microbiome (meconium, rumen fluid at birth and day 2; q ≥ 0.12) and between the cow and calf at weaning (q ≥ 0.06). Microbial composition, determined by beta diversity, differed in the early rumen microbiome (rumen fluid at birth, day 2, and day 28; q ≤ 0.04), and VFA profiles complimented these results. There were similarities in composition between meconium, rumen fluid at birth, and rumen fluid from the cow at weaning (q ≥ 0.09). These data indicate successive development of the rumen microbiome and stabilization over time. Similarities between meconium and rumen fluid at birth potentially indicates in utero colonization of the calf gastrointestinal tract. Similarities in composition between the early calf rumen microbiome and the cow at weaning prompt an interesting comparison and area for future consideration in terms of identifying at what stage of gestation might colonization begin. Overall, this study provides insight into similarities between the cow and calf microbiomes and may be helpful in developing hypotheses for the pathway of colonization and programming potential in the early gut.Developmental programming has highlighted important influences of maternal factors on offspring development. Recent research indicates a programming potential of the rumen microbiome and understanding this role as well as how inoculation occurs may allow beef producers to optimize management practices of gestating cows such that offspring performance is improved via the rumen microbiome. To investigate this, rumen fluid samples were collected from mature cows immediately prior to calving, from their calf immediately after calving with a meconium sample, day 2, and day 28 as well as collected from both dam and calf at weaning. The rumen and meconium microbiome of the newborn calf were similar to each other as well as to the cow rumen microbiome at weaning, although not to the cow rumen microbiome immediately prior to calving. The shared microbiome of the early calf gut highlight a common source of inoculation. The similarities with the cow rumen at weaning could indicate initiation of colonization occurs early in gestation. Results indicate there are shared microbial properties between the cow and calf rumen microbiome. This further supports the opportunity to alter the calf rumen microbiome to improve productivity through the management of the cow during gestation.

Excessive inputs of nitrogen from anthropogenic activities in watersheds can cause detrimental effects to aquatic ecosystems, but these effects can be difficult to determine based solely on nitrogen concentrations because of their temporal variability and the need to link human activities to ecological responses. Here, we (1) tested the use of stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) in benthic organic matter (BOM) as proxies for isotope ratios of filter feeding bivalves in lakes and estuaries, which can be used as indicators but are harder to sample and often spatially sparse, and (2) evaluated if stable isotope ratios in benthic organic matter could be used to assess impacts from anthropogenic land development of watersheds. The δ15N in BOM isolated from surficial sediment (δ15NBOM) was significantly correlated with δ15N in filter feeding unionid mussels (Elliptio complanata, δ15NUN) from lakes and with hard-shell clams (Mercenaria mercenaria, δ15NMM) from estuaries. In lakes, δ13CBOM was significantly correlated with δ13CUN, but δ13CBOM was not significantly correlated with δ13CMM in estuaries. Values of δ15NBOM and δ15NUN were significantly and positively correlated with increasing amounts of impervious surface, urban land cover, and human populations in watersheds surrounding lakes. In estuaries, δ15NBOM was only significantly and positively correlated with greater percent impervious surface in the watersheds. Correlations of δ13CBOM in lakes and estuaries, δ13CUN, and δ13CMM with land use and human population were mostly non-significant or weak. Overall, these results show that δ15NBOM can serve as a proxy for δ15N of filter feeding bivalves in lakes and estuaries and is useful for assessing anthropogenic impacts on aquatic systems and resources. Our study area was limited in size, but our results support further studies to test the application of this sediment stable isotope-based technique for assessing and ranking aquatic resources across broad geographical areas.

Simple Summary The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of maternal feed intake restriction on the microbiome of the reproductive tract and its subsequent colonization of the bovine fetal gut microbiome in utero. After sequencing the microbial DNA of the maternal vagina, placental tissues, and fetal gut, our data show the microbiome of the vagina and cotyledon remain relatively unaffected by feed intake restriction and mineral supplementation. The placental microbiome of feed restricted pregnancies was less diverse, and feeding using a mineral supplement did not impact these differences. However, mineral supplementation improved the richness of the fetal gut microbiomes regardless of feeding treatment, substantiating prior evidence that in utero mineral supplementation improves calf performance. The obtained results may offer insight into improving nutrient use of calves born to dams experiencing feed restriction. Abstract Feed intake restriction impacts both humans and ruminants in late gestation, although it is unknown whether this adverse maternal environment influences the microbiome of the reproductive tract, and through it, the colonization of the fetal gut. A 2 × 2 factorial design including a 70% feed intake restriction (feed restricted ‘FR’ or control diets ‘CON’) and mineral supplementation (unsupplemented ‘S−’ or supplemented ‘S+’) was used to analyze these effects in multiparous cows (n = 27). Vaginal swabs were obtained 60, 30, and 10 days prior to the estimated calving date, along with neonatal rumen fluid and meconium. Placental tissues and efficiency measurements were collected. Microbial DNA was extracted for 16S sequencing of the V4 region. Feed restriction decreased the diversity of the placental microbiome, but not the vagina, while mineral supplementation had little impact on these microbial communities. Mineral supplementation did improve the richness and diversity of the fetal gut microbiomes in relation to reproductive microbes. These differences within the placental microbiome may influence individual health and performance. Adequate maternal nutrition and supplementation yielded the greatest placental efficiency, which may aid in the establishment of a healthy placental microbiome and fetal microbial colonization.

The design of a clinical trial is often complicated by the multi-systemic nature of the disease; a single endpoint often cannot capture the spectrum of potential therapeutic benefits. Multi-domain outcomes which take into account patient heterogeneity of disease presentation through measurements of multiple symptom/functional domains are an attractive alternative to a single endpoint. A multi-domain test with adaptive weights is proposed to synthesize the evidence of treatment efficacy over numerous disease domains. The test is a weighted sum of domain-specific test statistics with weights selected adaptively via a data-driven algorithm. The null distribution of the test statistic is constructed empirically through resampling and does not require estimation of the covariance structure of domain-specific test statistics. Simulations show that the proposed test controls the type I error rate, and has increased power over other methods such as the O'Brien and Wei-Lachin tests in scenarios reflective of clinical trial settings. Data from a clinical trial in a rare lysosomal storage disorder were used to illustrate the properties of the proposed test. As a strategy of combining marginal test statistics, the proposed test is flexible and readily applicable to a variety of clinical trial scenarios.

Estimating the trophic position of predators in food webs using stable isotopes requires establishing a “baseline”, typically served by bivalves or snails. However, the frequent absence of such organisms in lakes leaves researchers in a difficult situation. Here we test the hypothesis that trophic position (TP) of largemouth bass (LB; Micropterus salmoides) in lakes can be estimated from δ15N of benthic organic material (BOM) in littoral surficial sediment. δ15NLB as a function of δ15NBOM was significant across 51 lakes with an R2 of 0.84, supporting our hypothesis. In a subset of six lakes, the mean TPLB did not differ significantly when calculated using baselines of δ15N in BOM, unionid mussels (UN), gastropods (SN), or from a stable isotope mixing model. In a subset of 26 lakes, mean TPLB calculated from δ15NBOM and δ15NUN baselines were not significantly different, but TPLB calculated using δ15NBOM was not significantly correlated with TPLB calculated using δ15NUN. Although δ15NBOM should not be used interchangeably with δ15NUN as a baseline for estimating TPLB, δ15NBOM can be useful as a separate baseline where estimates of fish TP are needed in all study lakes given that mussels are frequently absent and BOM is always available for collection.

We present a case of an elderly, immunosuppressed patient with rheumatoid arthritis who was not appropriately vaccinated, and subsequently developed herpes zoster ophthalmicus, which initially presented similar to giant cell arteritis. Evidence-based vaccinations are integral in decreasing the incidence of preventable diseases and promoting optimal health at the individual and population level. Although the patient ultimately did not suffer any long-term adverse sequelae, this case highlights the importance of vaccination in the rheumatology setting, and to consider both inflammatory and infectious causes of headache and vision changes in the elderly.

This study was conducted to determine effects of pre-synchronization of ovulation timing among heifers and delayed fixed-time artificial insemination (TAI) with sex-sorted semen on proportion of heifers pregnant after TAI (PR/AI). Heifers were assigned to one of eight treatments: 1 and 2), 7-d CO-Synch + CIDR treatment regimen with administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone and a CIDR insert on Day 0, prostaglandin F2α (PGF) at CIDR removal on Day 7, and TAI occurring 54 h later with conventionally processed (CTRL54-CNV) or sex-sorted semen (CTRL54-SEX); 3 and 4), same as CTRL54 but TAI delayed to 72 h with conventionally processed (CTRL72-CNV) or sex-sorted semen (CTRL72-SEX); 5 and 6), same as CTRL54 but additional administration of PGF on Day -7 and TAI with conventionally processed (PRE54-CNV) or sex-sorted semen (PRE54-SEX); 7 and 8), same as PRE54 treatments but TAI delayed to 72 h with conventionally processed (PRE72-CNV) or sex-sorted semen (PRE72-SEX). Proportion of heifers pregnant after TAI was greater (P ≤ 0.02) with conventionally processed semen compared with sex-sorted semen, yet PR/AI did not differ (P = 0.14) between heifers in PRE72-CNV and PRE72-SEX groups. There were greater PR/AI in the PRE72-SEX (P = 0.03) than CTRL54-SEX group (46.1 % and 36.9 %) and there was no difference (P = 0.31) in PR/AI between CTRL54-CNV and PRE72-SEX groups (50.4 % and 46.1 %). In conclusion, pre-synchronization of ovulation timing among heifers combined with delayed TAI resulted in increased PR/AI with sex-sorted semen compared with the 7-d CO-Synch+CIDR treatment regimen.

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of trace mineral supplementation on traditional and novel measures of bull fertility. In Experiment 1, 37 mature bulls received one of three dietary supplements daily for 71 d: 1) Supplement without Cu, Zn, and Mn (CON); 2) Supplement with Cu, Zn, and Mn sulfate (SULF); and 3) Supplement with basic Cu chloride, and Zn and Mn hydroxychloride (CHLR). In Experiment 2, 128 Angus or Angus-Hereford bull calves were maintained on a growing diet for 75 d (year 1) or 119 d (year 2) in Calan gate equipped pens without mineral supplementation. Bulls (n = 32 head/treatment) received one of four trace mineral supplements daily for 84 d: 1) Zn with no Cu (ZN), 2) Cu with no Zn (CU), 3) Cu and Zn (ZNCU), or 4) no Cu or Zn (CON). Bull fertility measures included a breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) and novel fertility measures conducted using flow cytometry. In mature bulls, final liver Zn concentration was positively correlated (P = 0.02) with sperm concentration (r = 0.31) and tended (P = 0.06) to be negatively correlated with acrosome damage (r = -0.39). Peripubertal bulls receiving ZNCU had greater ADG than bulls in the CU group (P = 0.05). Each BSE and novel fertility component improved from Day 0-84 in peripubertal bulls and were not affected (P 0.10) by mineral supplementation. Bulls that received no supplement (CON) had greater (P 0.01) percentage of sperm with distal midpiece reflex (6.9 vs 4.0% for CON and TM supplement, respectively) and Dag or Dag-like defect (2.6 vs 1.4% for CON and TM supplement, respectively) in their ejaculates. Sperm viability after 30 min of incubation were not affected by trace mineral supplementation, but after 3 h incubation, sperm viability tended to differ (P = 0.06) between treatments and tended to be less for CON bulls (48.5%) compared to ZNCU bulls (55.1%). Among contrast comparisons, trace mineral supplemented bulls had greater (P 0.05) percentage of viable sperm at 3 h post collection and reactive oxygen resistant sperm than CON bulls. Addition of Zn to trace mineral containing Cu (ZNCU) improved (P 0.05) percentage of sperm in the ejaculate with high mitochondrial energy potential and viable sperm with intact acrosome membrane. In summary, it appears the homeostasis mechanisms for bull trace mineral maintenance are extremely efficient and mineral supplementation of mature and peripubertal bulls did not have major improvements in any laboratory or chute-side measures of bull fertility, however bulls exposed to breeding or in environments with diet antagonists might respond differently.

Background Isolated internal penetrating Crohn’s diseases (IIPCD) is the second most common fistulating phenotype yet remains poorly characterised in therapeutic trials. This study assessed long-term outcomes of IIPCD. Methods We performed a retrospective study on data collected from 6 IBD referral centres, screening imaging reports between January 2016 and April 2019, excluding perianal or enterocutaneous fistulation, resulting in 121 patients with IIPCD. Management was classified as no intervention, medical (new/optimised) or surgical. The primary endpoint was complete resolution (CR) of fistula at next two imaging reassessments, paired with symptom and nutrition status, as previously defined(Samimi et al., 2010). Secondary endpoint was combined CR and partial resolution (PR). Statistics: Fisher’s exact, Kaplan-Meier method (SPSS v.27). Results Of patients at IIPCD diagnosis, 21% had previous IBD-related surgery, 21% were on a current biologic, 41% immunomodulator and 41% no treatment. Fistulae were majority enteroenteric (55%) and enterocolonic (48%), minority genitourinary (7.4%), with median disease duration at IIPCD diagnosis of 64 months. Outcomes of 118 patients with ≥1 interval imaging were analysed. Initial management was: 25.4% (n=30) no intervention, 49.2% (n=59) medical, 25.4% (n=30) surgical. Of fistula characteristics, only abscess predicted surgery over medical management (OR 5.30, 95% CI 1.60–15.48 p=0.0061), Figure 1. At first reassessment, CR and PR for the three management cohorts was 13.3%, 12.1%, 66.7% and 20.0%, 46.6%, 26.7%, respectively. The cumulative probability of CR was significantly greater for surgery compared with no intervention and medical management (log-rank p As observed management was then adjusted, cohorts were re-stratified: 13.5% (n=16) no intervention only, 45.8% (n=54) any medical but no surgery, 40.7% (n=48) any surgery. Weaning of beef calves has been previously shown to be a stressful event. A number of feed additives have been developed to attenuate the periods of stress in calves, such as direct-fed microbials (DFM) and tannins (TN). A two-year study was conducted to determine the effect of DFM plus tannins (DFM+TN) on newly weaned calf performance and indicators of innate and humoral immune response. Angus calves (n = 142 in year 1; 143 in year 2) were weaned at approximately 6 mo of age, immediately transferred to a feedlot, and fed one of two diets for 42 days: a receiving ration without added DFM+TN (CON), or the same ration with (DFM+TN; 2×108 CFU/hd/d Propionibacterium acidipropionici; 5×107 CFU/hd/d Lactobacillus animalis; 5×107 CFU/hd/d Bifidobacterium animalis and 15 g/hd/d tannins). Body weights were taken on two consecutive days and averaged at the beginning and ending of the study, while single day weights were taken on d 28. In year 2, blood samples from coccygeal vascular complex were collected on d 0, 14, and 28 to measure post-vaccination Bovine viral Diarrhea (BVDV) titers. Upon completion of the 42-d study (year 2 only), calves (n = 72) were transported to Laramie, WY (242 km for 3 h) and additional blood samples were taken on d 0, 2, 4, 7, and 9, relative to transportation, to measure plasma haptoglobin concentrations. There were no differences detected for year (P > 0.18), initial (P = 0.42) and final BW (P = 0.43) or DMI (P = 0.31) due to dietary treatment. However, DFM+TN calves had lower (P = 0.001) overall feed:gain (F:G) and a tendency for greater overall ADG (P = 0.06) compared to CON calves. At present diagnosis of true resistance and determination of drug efficacy in Fasciola hepatica infection rely solely on terminal experiments. The coproantigen ELISA (cELISA) has been reported previously as a sensitive and specific tool appropriate to detect treatment failure, and potentially drug resistance. Two studies were conducted to determine whether the cELISA was appropriate for on-farm efficacy and resistance testing in Australian Merino sheep. In Study 1 sheep were infected orally with 50 F. hepatica metacercariae on three occasions, twelve, six and two weeks prior to a single flukicide treatment with triclabendazole, closantel or albendazole. Sheep were sampled weekly for a further seven weeks prior to necropsy. Following effective treatment, no faecal antigen was detected from 1 week. When immature stages (≤6 weeks) survived treatment, coproantigen reappeared from 6 weeks post-treatment. Therefore, cELISA conducted 1-4 weeks after treatment will demonstrate obvious treatment failure against adult F. hepatica, but is not sufficiently sensitive to detect survival of immature fluke until these reach maturity. In study 2, fluke burdens of sheep necropsied 13 weeks post single infection were compared to fecal worm egg counts (FWEC) and cELISA at necropsy. Regression analysis demonstrated that cELISA correlated strongly with fluke burden, whilst FWEC correlated weakly with cELISA. The correlation between FWEC and fluke burden was also weak, although stronger than that of FWEC with cELISA. The cELISA is an appropriate tool for monitoring effectiveness of treatments against Fasciola hepatica if an adult infection is present, however when immature stages of the parasite are present it is not as reliable. Where immature parasites are present it is recommended that initial cELISA be followed with a secondary cELISA at least 6 weeks after treatment to ensure resistance to immature stages is detected. Further testing is justified for monitoring the effectiveness of control programs by detecting adult populations that have survived a treatment regime.

Through a co/auto/ethnographic approach informed by a theoretical bricolage of critical pedagogy, place-based education, science education, human geography, feminism, and indigenous ways of knowing, the authors demonstrate the power of place in and as pedagogy. Using rich personal narratives, they reclaim their stories as an urban island-dweller and nomadic music-dweller, and they illuminate place as an epistemological, ontological and axiological anchor for the Self in the neoliberal wasteland. Specifically, the authors attend to their familial lineages and reasons for migrating from Southern Europe to the USA’s Northeast section, the Northern Mid-Western and to the Southeast. They examine their and their families’ connections with place in relation to the ideological fictions embedded within their shared narrative of “for a better life,” which is the story that was told to them about their families’ migrations. They probe under the surface by asking, “better than what,” “according to whom,” and “why?” In doing so, they peel back the veil of hegemony and expose the ways that economic disadvantage impacted their families’ relationships with their homelands. The article concludes by conceptualizing critical connoisseurship as a means for guiding students to tap into the embodied knowledge of place in order to notice, question, appreciate and critically reflect upon curricular content and subject matter and resist neoliberalism’s removal of person from place and local knowledge.

Previous studies have demonstrated that a decrease in nutrition immediately following AI reduces pregnancy success in beef heifers. The objective of this experiment was to determine if nutrient restriction following AI impacted early embryonic development among non-super ovulated heifers. Beef heifers in eight replications (Rep; Rep 1; n = 14, Rep 2; n = 15, Rep 3; n = 15, Rep 4; n = 14, Rep 5; n = 15, Rep 6; n = 15, Rep 7; n = 25, Rep 8; n = 25) across two locations (UMN, SDSU) were developed in a dry-lot and fed 125% NRC requirements from weaning to timed-AI (d 0). Heifers were timed-AI to a single sire in all replications. Immediately following AI, heifers were assigned, based on age, weight, and estrous response to one of two post-AI nutritional treatments. Half the heifers in each replication continued on the pre-insemination diet, serving as the control treatment (CON) and the remaining heifers were restricted to a sub-maintenance diet (RES). At UMN, heifers in the RES treatment were fed the same diet, but intake was limited to 80% NEm, while at SDSU, DMI remained the same, but diet composition was altered with the addition of straw to reduce NEm to 50% of requirements. Food waste interventions often end up shifting waste instead of reducing it. Lake, McFarland, and Vogelzang suggest efforts to ameliorate the food waste crisis could be better served through integrating theories and tools from systems thinking and design thinking. They analyse several systemic influences on food change and then recommend ten practical strategies for fostering and supporting change agents. Lake et al. suggest these ten intervention strategies will help change agents uncover and leverage the otherwise hidden interconnections between social, economic, and political systems. These strategies may open opportunities to address the underlying factors contributing to food waste and yield more inclusive, effective, and sustainable change.

The horn fly Haematobia irritans (Diptera: Muscidae) is a blood obligate ectoparasite of bovids that causes annual losses to the U.S. beef cattle industry of over US$1.75 billion. Climate warming, the anthropogenic dispersion of bovids and the cross-breeding of beef cattle with other bovid species may facilitate novel horn fly-host interactions. In particular, hybridizing yaks [Bos grunniens (Artiodactyla: Bovidae)] with beef cows (Bos taurus) for heterosis and carcass improvements may increase the exposure of yak × beef hybrids to horn flies. The present paper reports on the collection of digital images of commingled beef heifers (n = 12) and F1 yak × beef hybrid bovids (heifers, n = 7; steers, n = 5) near Laramie, Wyoming (∼ 2200 m a.s.l.) in 2018. The total numbers of horn flies on beef heifers and F1 yak × beef heifers [mean ± standard error (SE): 88 ± 13 and 70 ± 17, respectively] did not differ significantly; however, F1 yak × beef steers had greater total horn fly abundance (mean ± SE: 159 ± 39) than female bovids. The present report of this experiment is the first such report in the literature and suggests that F1 yak × beef bovids are as susceptible as cattle to horn fly parasitism. Therefore, similar monitoring and treatment practices should be adopted by veterinarians, entomologists and producers.

A high functioning 74-year-old man with systemic lupus erythematosus presented to the emergency department with acute anxiety. He was found to have elevated cardiac enzymes and admitted to the cardiology service for investigation. In hospital, he developed an erythematous papular rash, and deteriorated to being somnolent and bedridden. He was found to have new multiterritory ischaemic strokes. It was eventually noted that he had persistent eosinophilia, present even on admission, which had been overlooked as the total leucocyte count was normal. Serology for antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) was positive. He was diagnosed with hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) secondary to new APS, and responded to high-dose steroids. This case highlights the importance of fully evaluating a leucocyte differential to make a diagnosis of HES. We discuss the definition, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approach and management of this important condition.

While early onset of puberty among girls has been related to substance use involvement and other adverse outcomes, less research has examined pubertal development and outcomes in boys. Further, research on puberty has not been conducted in the context of other risk factors for substance use involvement such as impulsivity. To address these gaps, this study characterized boys' pubertal development from preadolescence to mid-adolescence and related it to substance use risk and behavioral impulsivity.A sample of 153 boys completed the Pubertal Development Scale to assess perception of their pubertal development relative to same age peers from ages 10 to 16 years, at 6-month intervals. A two-year study was conducted to determine the effects of direct-fed microbials plus tannins (DFM + TN) on weaned calf performance and indicators of innate immune response. Angus calves (n = 142 year 1; 143 year 2) were weaned at 6 months of age, transferred to a feedlot, and fed one of two diets for 42 days: a ration with added DFM + TN (2×108 Propionibacterium acidipropionici; 5×107 CFU/hd/day Lactobacillus animalis; 5×107 CFU/hd/day Bifidobacterium animalis; and tannins 15 g/hd/day) or a ration with no added DFM +TN (CON). Body weights were taken on consecutive days and averaged at the beginning and ending of the study, while single day weights were taken on d 14, and 28. Upon completion of the feeding study (year 2), calves (n = 72) were transported to Laramie, WY (204 km), where blood samples were taken on d 0, 2, 4, 7, and 9 relative to transportation to measure plasma haptoglobin. Data were compared among groups using a categorical response mixed model. The model included the fixed effect of treatment group and the data were measured repeatedly. DFM + TN calves had lower overall (P = 0.001) F:G and tended to have greater ADG (P = 0.15) and lower F:G (P = 0.12) during the first 28 days and greater overall ADG (P = 0.06) and greater (P = 0.11) total gain overall. There was a tendency (P = 0.09) for a treatment x day effect for DFM + TN calves to have lower plasma haptoglobin concentration on day 0 and 4 than CON calves. Weaned calves fed DFM + Tannins tended to have greater growth performance during the first 42 days post weaning and tended to have a reduction in plasma haptoglobin concentrations, suggesting a reduction in stress and a positive impact on calf growth.

USDA National Animal Germplasm Program is responsible for collecting germplasm from agriculturally relevant species in the US and developing methods for its efficient and effective storage and utilization. Lack of low cost and effective use of assisted reproductive technologies in sheep has been problematic and impacts the effective use of germplasm. While ram semen can be cryopreserved, methods for its use via non-surgical artificial insemination (AI) are not well developed. Consequently, we performed multiple trials to identify methods that result in ewe fertility when using cryopreserved ram semen, synchronized estrous, and timed non-surgical AI to identify factors that influence fertility. Experiment 1 used Black Welsh Mountain sheep and resulted in 51 % of bred ewes lambing. Statistical analysis showed age of the ewe, ram, and interaction of ewe age X time of AI effects were not significant. However, AI time relative to CDIR removal impacted fertility (P 0.05). Experiment 3 utilized both breeds of sheep and resulted in mean fertility of 48 and 13 % for Black Welsh Mountain and Rambouillet, respectively. Analysis of the fertility results in experiment 3 included the effects of ewe breed, time of AI, ram, and the 2 and 3-way interaction terms.
