This work deals with the presence of analytical vortex configurations in generalized models of the Maxwell-Higgs type in the three-dimensional spacetime. We implement a procedure that allows to decouple the first order equations, which we use to solve the model analytically. The approach is exemplified with three distinct models that show the robustness of the construction. The present work investigates several models of a single real scalar field, engendering kinetic term of the Dirac-Born-Infeld type. Such theories introduce nonlinearities to the kinetic part of the Lagrangian, which presents a square root restricting the field evolution and including additional powers in derivatives of the scalar field, controlled by a real parameter. In order to obtain topological solutions analytically, we propose a first-order framework that simplifies the equation of motion ensuring solutions that are linearly stable. This is implemented using the deformation method, and we introduce examples presenting two categories of potentials, one having polynomial interactions and the other with nonpolynomial interactions. We also explore how the Dirac-Born-Infeld kinetic term affects the properties of the solutions. In particular, we note that the kinklike solutions are similar to the ones obtained through models with standard kinetic term and canonical potential, but their energy densities and stability potentials vary according to the parameter introduced to control the new models., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; version to appear in Annals of Physics

We study how the properties of a Lagrangian density for a single real scalar field in flat spacetime change with inclusion of an overall factor depending only on the field. The focus of the paper is to obtain analytical results. So, we show that even though it is possible to perform a field redefinition to get an equivalent canonical model, it is not always feasible to write the canonical model in terms of elementary functions. Also, we investigate the behavior of the energy density and the linear stability of the solutions. Finally, we show that one can find a class of models that present the same energy density and the same stability potential., 6 pages, 4 figures

The nature of gravity and its strength compared with other forces are fundamental challenges faced by the actual science. A path to understand the hierarchy problem of gravity consists in adding an extra dimension to Einstein–Hilbert’s general relativity. Therefore, gravity would be the only force leaking through this region of space–time also known as brane. Despite the success of the mathematical description for the hierarchy issue through simple thin branes, it is also possible to derive a consistent theory of gravity using thick branes. This work unveils a new procedure to determine analytic hybrid thick braneworld models. The discussions were based on the so-called Bloch branes, which are constructed via a two-field model coupled with gravity in five-dimensional space–time. Both fields used to build the Bloch branes depend only on the extra dimension, and the hybrid branes present internal structure, characterizing them as thick. In this work, we were able to derive new analytic thick brane models by using the extension method. Some of these new branes present a Minkowski space–time immersed inside of the fifth dimension. We showed how the symmetry of the emergent branes can be controlled via specific parameters. We also analyzed the stability conditions for each braneworld family, showing possible stable states for gravitons.

This work investigates twinlike scalar field models that support kinks with the same energy density and stability. We find the first order equations compatible with the equations of motion. We use them to calculate the conditions under which they attain the twinlike character. The linear stability is also investigated, and there we show that the addition of extra requirements may lead to the same stability under small fluctuations., 5 pages; published in EPL

This work deals with lump-like structures in models described by a single real scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. We start with a model that supports lump-like configurations and use the deformation procedure to construct scalar field theories that support both lumps and kinks, with the corresponding stability investigation giving rise to new physical systems. Very interestingly, we find models that support stable topological solutions, with the stability potential being able to support a tower of non-negative bound states, generating distinct families of potentials of current interest to quantum mechanics. We also describe models where the lump-like solutions give rise to stability potentials that have the shape of a double-well., 8 pages, 12 figures. To appear in EPJP

In this work we use the deformation procedure and explore the route to obtain distinct field theory models that present similar stability potentials. Starting from systems that interact polynomially or hyperbolically, we use a deformation function which allows to construct other theories having the feature of giving rise to the same stability potentials. Such deformation function leads to smooth potentials according to a specific choice of a single parameter. Among the results, one shows that for models with asymmetric topological sectors, the appearance of a new stability potential is also possible., 19 pages, 27 figures. To appear in Annals of Physics

This work deals with scalar field theories and supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The investigation is inspired by a recent result, which shows how to use the reconstruction mechanism to describe two distinct field theories from the very same quantum mechanics potential, and by an older work, which describes the deformation procedure that offers an interesting way to generate and solve new scalar field theories, starting from a given model of current interest. We use the procedure to unveil a new route, from which one can describe families of scalar field theories that engender the very same quantum mechanics potential. This work deals with a system of three distinct species that changes in time under the presence of mobility, selection, and reproduction, as in the popular rock-paper-scissors game. The novelty of the current study is the modification of the mobility rule to the case of directional mobility, in which the species move following the direction associated to a larger (averaged) number density of selection targets in the surrounding neighborhood. Directional mobility can be used to simulate eyes that see or a nose that smells, and we show how it may contribute to reduce the probability of coexistence.

This work develops a procedure to find classes of Lagrangian densities that describe generalizations of the Abelian Maxwell-Higgs, the Chern-Simons-Higgs and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs models. The investigation focuses on the construction of models that support vortices that obey the stressless condition and lead to first order differential equations which are compatible with the equations of motion. The results induce the appearance of constraints that restrict the choice of the Lagrangian densities, but help us to introduce an auxiliary function that allows to calculate the energy without knowing the explicit form of the solutions., 36 pages, 10 figures; new version, to appear in NPB

We present a general procedure to solve the equations of motion for cosmological models driven by real scalar fields with first-order differential equations. The method seems to have great power, since it works for closed, flat or open space-time, for scalar fields with both standard and tachyonic dynamics. We illustrate the procedure solving several examples which model situations of current interest to modern cosmology.

We investigate the presence of localized solutions in models described by a single real scalar field with generalized dynamics. The study offers a method to solve very intricate nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and we illustrate the results with some examples on localized structures with compact profile, in models with polynomial and nonpolynomial interactions. In this paper we study the possibility of constructing two-field models from one-field models. The idea is to start with a given one-field model and use the deformation procedure to generate another one-field model, and then couple the two one-field models nontrivially, to get to a two-field model, together with some explicit topological solutions. This work reports on models described by two real scalar fields coupled with gravity in the five-dimensional spacetime, with a warped geometry involving one infinite extra dimension. Through a mechanism that smoothly changes a thick brane into a hybrid brane, one investigates the appearance of hybrid branes hosting internal structure, characterized by the splitting on the energy density and the volcano potential, induced by the parameter which controls interactions between the two scalar fields. Stochastic simulations of cyclic three-species spatial predator-prey models are usually performed in square lattices with nearest neighbor interactions starting from random initial conditions. In this Letter we describe the results of off-lattice Lotka-Volterra stochastic simulations, showing that the emergence of spiral patterns does occur for sufficiently high values of the (conserved) total density of individuals. We also investigate the dynamics in our simulations, finding an empirical relation characterizing the dependence of the characteristic peak frequency and amplitude on the total density. In this work we investigate several models described by a single real scalar field with non-polynomial interactions, constructed to support topological solutions. We do this using the deformation procedure to introduce a function which allows to construct two distinct families of hyperbolic potentials, controlled by three distinct parameters, in the standard formalism. In this way, the procedure allows us to get analytical solutions, and then investigate the energy density, linear stability and zero mode. We move on and introduce a non-standard formalism to obtain compact solutions, analytically. We also investigate these hyperbolic models in the braneworld context, considering both the standard and non-standard possibilities. In this work we investigate the transition from kinks to compactons at high temperatures. We deal with a family of models, described by a real scalar field with standard kinematics, controlled by a single parameter, real and positive. The family of models supports kinklike solutions, and the solutions tend to become compact when the parameter increases to larger and larger values. We study the one-loop corrections at finite temperature, to see how the thermal effects add to the effective potential. In this work we determine the correspondence between quintessence and tachyon dark energy models with a constant dark energy equation of state parameter, $w_e$. Although the evolution of both the Hubble parameter and the scalar field potential with redshift is the same, we show that the evolution of quintessence/tachyon scalar fields with redshift is, in general, very different. We explicity demonstrate that if $w_e \neq -1$ the potentials need to be very fine-tuned for the relative perturbation on the equation of state parameter, $\Delta w_e/(1+w_e) \ll 1$, to be very small around the present time. We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential near an asymmetric BPS brane embedded in a 5D AdS-Minkowski space in the context of supergravity. The normalizable wave functions of gravity fluctuations around the brane describe only massive modes. We compute such wave functions analytically in the thin wall limit. We estimate the correction to gravitational potential for small and long distances, and show that there is an intermediate range of distances in which we can identify 4D gravity on the brane below a crossover scale. In this work we investigate the presence of lump-like solutions in models described by a single real scalar field in 1 + 1 dimensions. We take advantage of a procedure recently used to describe explicit analytical solutions and we study several distinct models, showing how the parameters can be used to control the specific features of the lump-like structures. The proposed models are of direct interest to the construction of q-balls, to induce tachyonic excitations and gravitating structures of non-topological profile on braneworld models with a single extra dimension, to map solitons in optical fibers, and to describe collective excitations in Bose–Einstein condensates.

We introduce a numerical procedure to investigate the spectrum of massive modes and its contribution for gravity localization on thick branes. After considering a model with an analytically known Schroedinger potential, we present the method and discuss its applicability. With this procedure we can study several models even when the Schroedinger potential is not known analytically. We discuss both the occurrence of localization of gravity and the correction to the Newtonian potential given by the massive modes., 22 pages, 12 figures

This work deals with braneworld models driven by real scalar fields with nonstandard dynamics. This work deals with defect structures in models described by scalar fields. The investigations focus on generalized models, with the kinetic term modified to allow for a diversity of possibilities. In this work we deal with non-topological solutions of the Q-ball type in two space-time dimensions, in models described by a single complex scalar field that engenders global symmetry. The main novelty is the presence of stable Q-balls solutions that live in a compact interval of the real line and appear from a family of models controlled by two distinct parameters. We study Born-Infeld gravity coupled to a static, nonrotating electric field in $2+1$ dimensions and find exact analytical solutions. Two families of such solutions represent geodesically complete, and hence nonsingular, spacetimes. Another family represents a point-like charge with a singularity at the center. Despite the absence of rotation, these solutions resemble the charged, rotating BTZ solution of General Relativity but with a richer structure in terms of horizons. The nonsingular character of the first two families turn out to be attached to the emergence of a wormhole structure on their innermost region. This seems to be a generic prediction of extensions of General Relativity formulated in metric-affine (or Palatini) spaces, where metric and connection are regarded as independent degrees of freedom., Comment: 24 single-column pages, 6 figures

In this work we give specific examples of competition models, with six and eight species, whose three-dimensional dynamics naturally leads to the formation of string networks with junctions, associated with regions that have a high concentration of enemy species. We study the two- and three-dimensional evolution of such networks, both using stochastic network and mean field theory simulations. If the predation, reproduction and mobility probabilities do not vary in space and time, we find that the networks attain scaling regimes with a characteristic length roughly proportional to $t^{1/2}$, where $t$ is the physical time, thus showing that the presence of junctions, on its own, does not have a significant impact on their scaling properties., Comment: v2, 10 pages, 11 figures

A feasible scheme is presented to generate a generalized superposition of displaced squeezed states, cos θ | α , z 〉 ± sin θ | - α , z 〉 , in a single mode of the electromagnetic field inside a microwave cavity. The scheme employs a two-level (Rydberg) atom driven by an external classical field. The success probability and the interaction time of such generation are also considered.

Inspired by the peculiarities of the effective geometry of crystalline structures, we reconsider thick brane scenarios from a metric-affine perspective. We show that for a rather general family of theories of gravity, whose Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the metric and the Ricci tensor, the background and scalar field equations can be written in first-order form, and tensorial perturbations have a non negative definite spectrum, which makes them stable under linear perturbations regardless of the form of the gravity Lagrangian. In this work we deal with the presence of braneworld solutions in a five-dimensional space-time with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent. The braneworld scenario is built under the presence of a single real scalar field, and we modify the gravity sector to include generic function of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We study several specific models, and we construct exact braneworld solutions, in particular for including the Gauss-Bonnet term at first and second order power. A recent proposal creating Fock states of the quantized radiation field, of kind | 2 N 〉 , was presented. The scheme was based on dispersive interaction of a cavity field with two-level Rydberg atoms. Here we get the same, via a simplified scheme using Raman interaction of the cavity field with degenerate three-level atoms.

A metric-affine approach is employed to study higher-dimensional modified gravity theories involving different powers and contractions of the Ricci tensor. It is shown that the field equations are \emph{always} second-order, as opposed to the standard metric approach, where this is only achieved for Lagrangians of the Lovelock type. We point out that this property might have relevant implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence in black hole scenarios. We illustrate these aspects by considering the case of Born-Infeld gravity in $d$ dimensions, where we work out exact solutions for electrovacuum configurations. We deal with the presence of topological defects in models for two real scalar fields. We comment on defects hosting topological defects, and we search for explicit defect solutions using the trial orbit method. As we know, under certain circumstances the second order equations of motion can be solved by first order differential equations. We show that theories having second-order field equations in the context of higher-dimensional modified gravity are not restricted to the family of Lovelock Lagrangians, but can also be obtained if no a priori assumption on the relation between the metric and affine structures of space-time is made (the Palatini approach). We illustrate this fact by considering the case of Palatini $f(R)$ gravities in five dimensions. Our results provide an alternative avenue to explore new domains of the AdS/CFT correspondence without resorting to ad hoc quasitopological constructions.

The influence of low-lying discrete states on the partition function for electron capture and beta decay rates in stellar conditions is discussed. Calculations are carried out for 56 Fe , 57 Fe , 59 Co and 60 Co . Experimental data and different level densities are used. We show that by using a simple but consistent approximation to calculate the nuclear partition function, it is possible to modify significantly the electron capture and beta decay rates.

This work deals with modified gravity in five dimensional spacetime. We study a thick Palatini $f(R)$ brane, that is, a braneworld scenario described by an anti-de Sitter warped geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent, sourced by real scalar field under the Palatini approach, where the metric and the connection are regarded as independent degrees of freedom. We consider a first-order framework which we use to provide exact solutions for the scalar field and warp factor. The proton and neutron decay of the giant monopole resonance in {sup 90}Zr is analyzed in terms of collective and statistical doorway states. For this purpose the hybrid model of the decay is used in the context of channel particle competition. The semidirect components are compatible with the particle-hole continuum random-phase-approximation calculations.
