Abstract: Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV π−p interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. The data show evidence for leading quark effects both in the number of D-meson types and in the Feynman x distributions. The production cross section is of the form d 2 δ d x d p T 2 ∞(1-x) n exp (-ap T 2 ) with n = 2.8±0.8 and a = 1.1±0.3 (GeV/c)−2. The x distribution is, however, compatible with the presence of both central (n = 6) and leading (n = 1) D / D production. The fraction of D-messons in the leading component is estimated to be ≈30%. The rapidity gap between members of reconstructed charm pairs is small compared to the available rapidity range. The inclusive cross section for single D-messons in the forward direction is: δ(D/ D )=(40 8 +15 )μ b ( for x>0) .

Abstract: Charm data from 360 GeV/c π− p interactions are used to give results on D-meson branching ratios. The analysis is based on 114 charm events containing 183 observed charm particle decays. We present topological branching ratios and decay multiplicities, as well as the following inclusive branching ratios of D-mesons: B( D ± → K ∓ + anything ) = 0.16 −0.07 +0.08 , if B( D 0 → K ± + anything ) = 0.44 −0.10 +0.11 , ifB( D ± → e ± + 2,4 (rmcharged hadrons) = 0.07 −0.05 ++0.08 , B( D 0 → e ± + anything ) = 0.17 −0.06 +0.08 .

Abstract: The goal of the DIRAC experiment at CERN (PS212) is to measure the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom lifetime with 10% precision. Such a measurement would yield a precision of 5% on the value of the $S$-wave $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths combination $|a_0-a_2|$. Based on part of the collected data we present a first result on the lifetime, $\tau=[2.91 ^{+0.49}_{-0.62}]\times 10^{-15}$ s, and discuss the major systematic errors. This lifetime corresponds to $|a_0-a_2|=0.264 ^{+0.033}_{-0.020} m_{\pi}^{-1}$.

Abstract: Annihilation of antiprotons and protons at rest into neutral particles has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. Annihilation frequencies are determined for final states containing π 0 , η , η ′ and ω mesons using a liquid and a room temperature, 12 bar, gaseous hydrogen target. Including annihilation frequencies for production of neutral kaons from other experiments, the identified reactions for annihilation in liquid hydrogen add up to a branching fraction of (3.56±0.28)% per annihilation compared to the frequency of (3.50±0.30)% with which we observe the all-neutral decay modes inclusively. Since the exclusive final states are normalized to the Crystal Barrel measurement of the π 0 π 0 branching ratio, the latter result is strongly supported by this present study.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data are presented for p p→ωπ + π − π 0 at rest, with ω → π + π − π 0 . A small but definite signal confirms a 0 (1450) decaying to ωρ . Its branching ratio to ωρ is a factor 10.7±2.3 larger than to ηπ , where it was first identified. When fitted with a Breit–Wigner amplitude which includes the s -dependence of the ωρ channel, the pole position is M =1440 +40 −15 − i (55±7) MeV. The exotic π 1 (1600) is observed decaying to b 1 π with orbital angular momenta L =0 and 2. There is also a strong J PC =1 ++ signal consistent with a 1 (1640) decaying to ωρ and a much weaker signal for decays to [ b 1 (1235) π ] L =1 . The strongest contribution to the data is a J PC =0 −+ signal in ωρ suggesting a pole at M =1470±15− i (57±7) MeV.

Abstract: New Crystal Barrel data are reported for pbar-p -> omega-eta and pbar-p -> omega-pizero-pizero with omega decaying to piplus-piminus-pizero. The omega-eta data confirm angular distributions obtained earlier from data where omega -> pizero-gamma. The new omega-eta data provide accurate measurements of vector and tensor polarisations of the omega and lead to considerable improvements in masses and widths of s-channel resonances. A new J^PC = 3^+- I = 0 resonance is observed with mass M = 2025+-20 MeV and width Gamma = 145+-30 MeV. Polarisation is close to zero everywhere and tensor polarisations are large, as is the case also for pbar-p -> omega-pizero., Comment: Makes available the final combined analysis of these quantum numbers. 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Data on p p→ηπ + π − π + π − at rest show two resonant processes: (a) f 0 (1370)η,f 0 (1370)→σσ and ρρ , (b) η(1440)σ , η(1440)→ηπ + π − . The branching ratio BR[f 0 (1370)→ρρ]/BR[f 0 (1370)→σσ]=0.98±0.25 in the mass range available here. Using data on p p→ηπ 0 π 0 , the ratio Γ 4π /Γ 2π ⩾5 for f 0 (1370) . The effects of the strongly s -dependent width of f 0 (1370) are discussed in some detail. The η(1440) is observed decaying to ησ and a 0 (980)π , with strong destructive interference between them. In its decay to a 0 (980)π , a narrow peak appears in the ηπ mass spectrum, but 30–50 MeV above that usually attributed to a 0 (980) and significantly above the KK threshold. This effect is explained naturally by a two-step process: η(1440)→K ∗ (890)K followed by rescattering of the two kaons through a 0 (980) to ηπ above the KK threshold.

Abstract: Measurements of two-body branching ratios for p p annihilations at rest in liquid and gaseous (12 ρ STP ) hydrogen are reported. Channels studied are p p →π 0 π 0 ,π 0 η , K 0 S K 0 L , K + K − . The branching ratio for the π 0 π 0 channel in liquid H 2 is measured to be ( 6.14±0.40)×10 −4 . The results are compared with those from other experiments. The fraction of P-state annihilation for a range of target densities from 0.002 ρ STP to liquid H 2 is determined. Values obtained include 0.11±0.02 in liquid H 2 and 0.48±0.04 in 12 ρ STP H 2 gas.

Abstract: We have measured the partial widths of the Z 0 into lepton pairs, and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process e + e − → μ + μ − using the L3 detector at LEP. We obtain an average Γ ll of 83.0±2.1±1.1 MeV.From this result and the asymmetry measurement, we extract the values of the vector and axial vector couplings of the Z 0 to leptons: g rmv =−0.066 −0.027 +0.046 and g rmA = −0.495 −0.007 +0.007 .

Abstract: The quark content of the meson f 0 (980) is determined on the basis of coupling constants of the decays f 0 (980)→ ππ , K K and γγ . The combined analysis has been carried out with the Flatte formula for the ratio of coupling constants g K K /g ππ found by fitting to data for the decays f 0 (980)→ ππ , K K and transition form factor f 0 (980)→q q →γγ , which is determined from the data on γγ partial width. For the flavour wave function of f 0 (980) written as n n cos φ+s s sin φ , two solutions appear: 1) φ ≃55° and 2) φ ≃−43°.

Abstract: Data are presented on the reaction pbar-p -> omega-omega-pizero at rest from the Crystal Barrel detector. These data identify a strong signal due to f2(1565) -> omega-omega. The relative production from initial pbar-p states 3P2, 3P1 and 1S0 is well determined from omega-omega decay angular correlations; P-state annihilation dominates strongly. A combined fit is made with data on pbar-p -> 3pizero at rest, where f2(1565) -> pizero-pizero is observed.

Abstract: From an analysis of p p→4π 0 at a beam momentum of 1940 MeV/c, we find evidence for a J PC =1 ++ resonance at 1640 ±12( stat )±30( syst ) MeV with Γ =300±22±40 MeV; it is observed decaying both to σπ with L =1 and to f 2 (1270) π with L =1.

Abstract: We present a measurement and partial wave analysis of the final state ${K}_{L}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$ of $\overline{p}p$ annihilation at rest in liquid hydrogen. This reaction is important for the study of the $\overline{K}K$ decay mode of scalar resonances, in particular, the isovectors ${a}_{0}(980)$ and ${a}_{0}(1450).$ The determination of the ${a}_{0}(1450)$ production also fixes the $\overline{K}K$ coupling of the isoscalar ${f}_{0}(1500)$ which is discussed as a glueball. We find $B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{a}_{0}(1450)\ensuremath{\pi}{;a}_{0}(1450)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{K}K)=(8.88\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.68)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and hence $B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{f}_{0}(1500)\ensuremath{\pi}{;f}_{0}(1500)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{K}K)=(4.52\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.36)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}.$ The mass and width of ${a}_{0}(1450)$ are $m=1480\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}30\mathrm{MeV}{/c}^{2}$ and $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=265\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15\mathrm{MeV}{/c}^{2},$ respectively. For ${a}_{0}(980)$ we determine the relative ratio $B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{a}_{0}\ensuremath{\pi}{;a}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{K}K)/B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{a}_{0}\ensuremath{\pi}{;a}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\eta})$ =0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 and its relative coupling, $\overline{K}K$ to \ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\eta}, is $1.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14.$

Abstract: With antiprotons stopped in liquid deuterium, the p n annihilation channel π−π0η was studied using a final sample of 52 576 events obtained for a spectator proton momentum q q quantum numbers IG=1−, JPC=1−+. The extracted Breit-Wigner resonance parameters are m=(1400±20±20) MeV/c2 and Γ=(310±50+50−30) MeV/c2.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data are presented on p−p → ηπ0π0π0 at rest in liquid hydrogen and also in gaseous hydrogen at 12 bar. Annihilation from the initial 3P0 state relative to 3P2 is stronger in liquid than in gas by a factor 2.46 ± 0.15, in fair agreement with a prediction by Batty. There is a definite peak due to η(1440). Liquid data determine its mass as M = 1413 MeV, Γ = 49 ± 8 MeV. The mass is, however, lower in gas than in liquid by 12 ± 3 MeV; we attribute this mass shift to interference with broad background amplitudes. The η (1440) decays dominantly to ησ: BR [a0(980)π,a0 → ηπ]/BR[ησ] = 0.4 ± 0.2. However, there is strong destructive interference between these two decay modes. There is also a strong, broad ηππ component with JPC = 0−+, consistent with an earlier analysis proposing a very wide η(1800) resonance; it contributes 31% of the ηπ0π0π0 branching ratio in liquid. At the highest ηππ masses, there are definite 2−+ and l++ signals, but we cannot establish precise resonance masses or widths. There is also evidence for the production of f2 (1565), decaying to a2 (1320)π.

Abstract: The decay p p ( at rest ) → K L o K ± π ∓ π o , studied on a sample of more than 14000 events, is found to proceed dominantly via two-body channels containing resonances with open strangeness. Contributions from K 1 (1270) K and K 1 (1400) K , branching into the successive K1-decay modes, and from K ∗ K ∗ , K ∗ ( K π) s and (Kπ) s ( K π) s are extracted by means of a partial-wave analysis which accounts well for the data and also allows a search for weak contributions from other (Kππ) and from ( K K π ) resonances. Striking asymmetries between the charged and the neutral kaonic resonances give evidence for interfering isospin 0 and 1 annihilation amplitudes.

Abstract: The annihilation channel p p →K + K − π 0 in liquid hydrogen at rest has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. The measured branching ratio is: BR ( p p → K + K − π 0 )=(2.37±0.15)×10 −3 . A partial wave analysis shows that this reaction is dominated by the π (K K ) S , K K ∗ (892) and π φ (1020) intermediate states. Weak signals are observed for π a 2 (1320), π f 2 (1270), π f 2 ′(1525) and K(Kπ) S . A satisfactory description of the Dalitz plot requires the introduction of π (K K ) P intermediate states with at least one pole.

Abstract: We have measured the branching ratio for the radiative decay ω → ηγ with ω mesons produced in antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into π0ω and ηω. Taking into account ϱ - ω mixing we find a branching ratio B(ω → ηγ) = (6.6 ± 1.7) × 10−4, in accord with the constructive interference solution in other experiments. The upper-limit for the direct radiative decay ω → 3γ is 1.9 × 10−4 at 95% confidence level.

Abstract: The π + π − invariant mass distribution produced in p p annihilation at rest and recoiling against η mesons exhibits large interference between the amplitudes for ϱη and ωη production. The interference can be quantitatively described within the framework of ϱ-ω interference. We find full coherence between the ϱω-ωη production amplitudes and a vanishing relative production phase. The implications of this result for p p annihilation dynamics are discussed.

Abstract: A partial wave analysis of pp → π0π0η′ has been performed using the η′ → π0π0η and η′ → γγ decay modes. The data are dominated by an η′ recoiling against the (ππ) S-wave. In addition, α2 (1320) → η′π0 is needed. There is evidence for contributions from α0(1450) → η′π0. The branching ratio of α0(1450) → η′π0 with respect to ηπ0 is consistent with the prediction of SU(3).

Abstract: The distribution of m ( π + π − ) in the decay η ′ → π + π − γ has been measured with the Crystal Barrel detector. The results are based on a total of 7392 observed η′ decays. The box anomaly constant is extracted from this and its value is found to agree well with theoretical expectations. The pseudoscalar nonet parameters ( f 1 , f 8 and θ PS ) are determined. Finally, we find that there is a problem of consistency between QCD and the standard VDM assumption.

Abstract: A study of p -annihilation in liquid deuterium into π − π 0 π 0 and a spectator-proton is presented. A cut on the proton-momentum of ≤ 100 MeV/ c ensures that annihilation takes place on a quasi-free neutron. A partial wave analysis shows contributions from three vector mesons, with masses and widths of (763.7 ± 3.2; 152.8 ± 4.3), (1411 ± 14; 343 ± 20); (1780 −29 +37 ; 275 ± 45) MeV/ c 2 , respectively.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data on p p → 5π 0 at rest are presented. Mass spectra for 2π0 combinations, 3π0 and 4π0 and decay angular distributions all differ significantly from phase space. We present several ways of fitting the data. All agree on the definite presence of the f0(1500), observed in its 4π0 decay mode. It can decay into ππ(1300) and into σσ where σ stands for the full ππ S-wave amplitude.

Abstract: Data on$\bar pp \to \eta \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \pi ^0 $ taken at beam momenta of 1.2 and 1.94 GeV/c reveal evidence for twoI=0JPC=2−+ resonances inηππ. The first, at 1645±14(stat.)±15(syst.) MeV with width 180−21+40±25 MeV, decays toα2(1320)π withL=0. It may be interpreted as the$q\bar q^1 $D2 partner ofπ2(1670). A strong signal is also observed just above threshold inf2(1270)η withL=0. It is 11–22 times stronger than is expected for the high mass tail of the 1645 MeV resonance. It can be fitted as a second 2−+ resonance at 1875±20±35 MeV with width 200±25±45 MeV. A third resonance havingJPC=2++ is observed at 2135±20±45 MeV withΛ=250±25±45 MeV, decaying to botha2(1320)π andf2(1270)η withL=1. There is no evidence for resonances with decays toa0(980)π, ση orf0(980)η.

Abstract: We have observed the ηπ + π − and ηπ 0 π 0 decay modes of the E meson in p p annihilation at rest into π + π − π 0 π 0 η . The mass and width of the E meson are 1409 ± 3 and 86 ± 10 MeV. The production and decay branching ratio is B( p p → Eππ)B(E → ηππ) = (3.3 ± 1.0) × 10 −3 . With a spin-parity analysis we determine that J P = 0 − . The observation of the ηπ 0 π 0 decay mode establishes that E is isoscalar ( C = +1). We find that E decays to η ( ππ ) s (where ( ππ ) s is an S-wave dipion) and πa 0 (980)(→ πη ) with a relative branching ratio of (78 ± 16) %. Using the K K π production and decay branching ratio measured earlier we determine that B[E → K K π] B[E → ηππ] = 0.61 ± 0.19 . A comparison with observations in radiative J Ψ decays suggests that E and ι η (1416) are identical.

Abstract: We discuss in a wider context the connection of the results previously obtained on the decay processes η/η′→π+π−γ with respect to the ξ test of QCD proposed by Chanowitz. We show that one can add consistently to the four Chanowitz equations an equation obtained by Novikovet al. Akhoury and Frere which involvesJ/ψ decays. We show that the formerly defined model M2 of the ϱ mass distribution accommodates easily this new constraint, while model M1 indicates an inconsistency with η data. We study the consequences of both M1 and M2 in the description of η/η′→μ+μ−γ and η/η′→e+e−γ decays and we find a good agrement with the existing measurements. Consistency of the procedure we propose is illustrated by deriving from η/η′→π+π−γ and η/η′→μ+μ−γ decays the branching fractions η/η′→γγ. We finally examine the consistency of the results obtained using the equations on box and triangle anomalies with the decaysV→Pγ andP→Vγ, whereP andV are the usual pseudoscalar and vector mesons. Using standard SU(3) relations among coupling constants, we find consistency of our previous results with most of these radiative decay modes. The set of meson radiative decays thus addressed consists of 21 processes. As a result of all these checks, we improve the picture provided by these two models, one (M1) in agreement with QCD, one (M2) in basic disagreement with it. Ways to go beyond this confirmed ambiguity are proposed.

Abstract: We confirm the existence of the two IG(JPC) = 0+(0++) resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500) reported by us in earlier analyses. The analysis presented here couples the final states π0π0π0, π0π0η and π0ηη of pp annihilation at rest. It is based on a 3 × 3 K-matrix. We find masses and widths of M = (1390±30) MeV, Γ = (380±80) MeV; and M = (1500±10) MeV, Γ = (154 ± 30) MeV, respectively. The product branching ratios for the production and decay into π0π0 and ηη of the f0(1500) are (1.27 ± 0.33) · 10−3 and (0.60 ± 0.17) · 10−3, respectively.

Abstract: The branching ratios Γ(η → 3π 0 ) Γ(η → π + π − π 0 ) = 1.44 ± 0.09 ± 0.10 and Γ(η → γγ) Γ(η → π + π − π 0 ) = 1.78 ± 0.10 ± 0.13 have been determined using the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. The latter ratio yields a partial width of Γ ( η → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.26 ± 0.03 keV using the known value for Γ ( η → γγ ). The η → π + π − π 0 ) Dalitz plot is compared to the predictions of chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract: The annihilation p p → Φγ has been investigated with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR for antiprotons stopped in liquid hydrogen. The observed branching ratio BR ( p p → Φγ = (1.7 ± 0.4) · 10 −5 is almost two orders of magnitude higher than expected from the OZI-rule. As a by-product, the branching ratios BR ( p p → K L K S ) = (9.0 ± 0.6) · 10 −4 and BR ( p p → Φπ 0 ) = (5.5 ± 0.7) · 10 −4 have been measured.

Abstract: A partial-wave analysis of the reaction p p →π 0 π 0 π 0 has been performed using a high-quality high-statistics data set of 712 000 events. In addition to the f0(975) and f0(1300), the scalar resonance with mass m = (1500 ± 15) MeV and width Γ = (120 ± 25) MeV is necessary to describe the data.

Abstract: Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into 3π0 is analysed based on a data sample of about 500 000 high-quality 3π0 events. In this high-statistics Dalitz plot two structures in the region of π0π0 invariant masses of about 1500 MeV show up, a small band and a blob at higher masses. In a first attempt to describe the data two different models are used to parametrize the dynamical amplitudes leading to the same conclusion: the data require a 0+ + and also a 2+ + resonance in the 1500 MeV region.

Abstract: The decay of the η-meson into three pions plays an important role as a test of low-energy QCD calculations in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Previous experiments show results that are inconclusive or even contradictory. The Crystal Barrel experiment at LEAR has determined the braching ratiosΓ(η→3π0)/Γ(η→π+π−π0)=1.47±0.09±0.15 andΓ(η→γγ)/Γ(η→π+π−π0)=1.88±0.10±0.17 using its unique features to detect charged particles as well as neutral particles. The value for the first ratio agrees nicely with the theoretical predictions and solves previous experimental uncertainties. The second value, which yields a partial width ofΓ(η→π+π−π0)=(0.24±0.03) keV, shows that the same next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory calculations still have some problems.

Abstract: With the Crystal Barrel detector, the final state π−π0π0pS at rest in liquid deuterium was measured for the first time. A preliminary partial-wave analysis was performed, which required two interesting features: besides the ρ(770), a second pole was needed in the ππP-wave and a narrow resonance in the ππS-wave, slightly above 1500 MeV/c2. With the same parametrization a high-statistics π+π−π0 data set could also be well described.

Abstract: We have searched for new light gauge bosons produced in π 0 and η decays by studying the kinematically well-constrained reactions p p→π 0 π 0 π 0 and p p→π 0 π 0 η , where one π 0 or the η decays through the emission of a single photon recoiling against a missing state X (where X is a long-lived weakly interacting particle or X →ν ν ). No signal has been observed and branching ratio upper limits of 6 × 10 −5 at 90% C.L. have been obtained for masses of the gauge boson lying between ∼65 MeV and 125 MeV ( π 0 decay), and 6 × 10 −5 at 90% C.L. for X masses between ∼200 MeV and 525 MeV (η decay). The π 0 -decay limit represents a factor of 4 to 8 improvement when compared to the existing limit, whereas the η decay limit has been measured for the first time, thereby extending the m x range from 130 MeV up to 525 MeV.
