1. Multidisciplinary approach to the study of large-format oil paintings

Abstract: Abstract Cultural heritage has become a keystone for comprehending our society, as it represents and reflects our origins, passions, beliefs and traditions. Furthermore, it provides fundamental information about specific temporary spaces, materials’ availability, technology, artist’s intention, and site weather conditions. Our aim was to develop a multidisciplinary approach with a main focus on investigating two Italian large-format paintings located in highly diverse environments such as the National Theater of Costa Rica. We monitored environmental conditions and quantified fungal aerial spores. Then, we determined regions of possible biodeterioration with the software MicroorganismPattern and used the software PigmentArrangement to elucidate the apparent colour of the paintings based on distribution and arrangement of the pigment crystals. Finally, we characterized eight genera of calcareous nannofossils found in the ground layers of the artwork. The former Men’s Canteen at the National Theater of Costa Rica presented a mean air temperature of 23.5 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ C, a relative humidity of 72.7% and a concentration of CO $$_{2}$$ 2 of 570 ppm. The fungal aerial concentration was 1776 spores/m $$^{3}$$ 3 . The software MicroorganismPattern identified 32 sampling regions, out of which 11 were positive for microbial contamination. The software PigmentArrangement determined that the blue crystals (ultramarine pigment) had the shortest distances between themselves (29 $$\upmu$$ μ m). Finally, the nanofossils identified enabled us to restrict the age of the material to a biostratigraphic interval ranging from Coniacian to Maastricthian ages. By using a multidisciplinary approach we were able to explore the diptych, suggest a set of minimally invasive perspectives in tropical environments to be used worldwide and obtain key information about the artist’s artistic process, materials used along with better understand its state of conservation.

Abstract: Abstract In this paper we study the system of a scalar quantum field confined between two plane, isotropic, and homogeneous parallel plates at thermal equilibrium. We represent the plates by the most general lossless and frequency-independent boundary conditions that satisfy the conditions of isotropy and homogeneity and are compatible with the unitarity of the quantum field theory. Under these conditions we compute the thermal correction to the quantum vacuum energy as a function of the temperature and the parameters encoding the boundary condition. The latter enables us to obtain similar results for the pressure between plates and the quantum thermal correction to the entropy. We find out that our system is thermodynamically stable for any boundary conditions, and we identify a critical temperature below which certain boundary conditions yield attractive, repulsive, and null Casimir forces.

Abstract: Abstract The basic thermodynamic quantities for a non-interacting scalar field in a periodic potential composed of either a one-dimensional chain of Dirac $$\delta -\delta ^\prime $$ δ-δ′ functions or a specific potential with extended compact support are calculated. First, we consider the representation in terms of real frequencies (or one-particle energies). Then we turn the axis of frequency integration towards the imaginary axis by a finite angle, which allows for easy numerical evaluation, and finally turn completely to the imaginary frequencies and derive the corresponding Matsubara representation, which this way appears also for systems with band structure. In the limit case $$T \rightarrow 0$$ T→0 we confirm earlier results on the vacuum energy. We calculate for the mentioned examples the free energy and the entropy and generalize earlier results on negative entropy.

Abstract: Modelos espacialmente explícitos de dispersión endozoócora. En este artículo, utilizamos los sistemas de dispersión de semillas como ejemplo para exponer la importancia de la ecología espacial en las interacciones planta-animal. Estos sistemas han recibido la atención prioritaria de los ecólogos vegetales, lo que ha conllevado tanto una simplificación excesiva del papel que juegan el comportamiento y fisiología de los animales dispersantes. Además, el enfoque casi exclusivo en los "kernel de dispersión" unidimensionales involucra asunciones que son generalmente violadas en los sistemas de estudio, como la isometría del kernel dispersivo o la ausencia de heterogeneidad espacial en dicho kernel. La mayoría de estas limitaciones pueden corregirse mediante la inclusión explícita del componente espacial, pasando de modelos de dispersión unidimensionales a modelos bi- o tri-dimensionales. Este enfoque se ilustra con dos ejemplos: la dispersión de semillas de Ephedra fragilis por la lagartija balear, Podarcis lilfordii, y el papel del elefante asiático, Oliphas maximus, en la dispersión de especies nativas e invasoras del bosque tropical seco de Sri Lanka.

6. Protocolo de extracción y procesamiento de células madre adultas del tejido adiposo abdominal: coordenadas del cirujano plástico en la investigación traslacional

Abstract: La terapia basada en células madre adultas constituye la forma de tratamiento más innovadora para la regeneración de los tejidos patológicos, ausentes o deficitarios; también de relleno estético apropiado para variedad de indicaciones cosméticas y reconstructivas, y una de las líneas prioritarias de investigación traslacional en todo el mundo, evitando los problemas de rechazo inmune de los homotrasplantes, las complicaciones inherentes a la implantación de otros materiales aloplásticos, las secuelas estéticas o funcionales de las zonas donantes de los autotrasplantes de mayor morbilidad, y los problemas éticos del uso de células madre embrionarias. El cirujano plástico tiene un papel protagonista tanto en la extracción del injerto de células madre del abdomen mediante una liposucción manual tumescente, como en la aplicación clínica rápida sobre distintos defectos, deformidades o pérdidas de sustancia. Presentamos el protocolo de extracción y procesamiento de células madre derivadas del tejido adiposo (ADSC) aprobado por el Comité Ético de Investigación Clínica, que resulta ser factible, seguro y reproducible, pudiendo servir de guía de actuación para el diseño de nuevos estudios clínicos controlados sobre la eficacia del autotrasplante de células madre aplicados a muchas otras patologías en el universo de la Cirugía Plástica en el que esté comprometida la cicatrización.

7. The Interstitial Lymphatic Peritoneal Mesothelium Axis in Portal Hypertensive Ascites: When in Danger, Go Back to the Sea

Abstract: Portal hypertension induces a splanchnic and systemic low-grade inflammatory response that could induce the expression of three phenotypes, named ischemia-reperfusion, leukocytic, and angiogenic phenotypes.During the splanchnic expression of these phenotypes, interstitial edema, increased lymph flow, and lymphangiogenesis are produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Associated liver disease increases intestinal bacterial translocation, splanchnic lymph flow, and induces ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. Extrahepatic cholestasis in the rat allows to study the worsening of the portal hypertensive syndrome when associated with chronic liver disease. The splanchnic interstitium, the mesenteric lymphatics, and the peritoneal mesothelium seem to create an inflammatory pathway that could have a key pathophysiological relevance in the production of the portal hypertension syndrome complications. The hypothetical comparison between the ascitic and the amniotic fluids allows for translational investigation. From a phylogenetic point of view, the ancestral mechanisms for amniotic fluid production were essential for animal survival out of the aquatic environment. However, their hypothetical appearance in the cirrhotic patient is considered pathological since ultimately they lead to ascites development. But, the adult human being would take advantage of the potential beneficial effects of this “amniotic-like fluid” to manage the interstitial fluids without adverse effects when chronic liver disease aggravates.

8. De la ecología de poblaciones y comunidades a la de ecosistemas: avances recientes y futuros desafios

Abstract: La Conferencia Final del programa LINKECOL tuvo lugar del 18 al 21 de mayo de 2004 en Palma de Mallorca. Como todo el Programa LINKECOL, dicha Conferencia estuvo especialmente enfocada a desarrollar las interrelaciones entre la ecología de comunidades y de ecosistemas, y más específicamente en (1) sintetizar los resultados obtenidos durante los últimos cinco años, período de duración del programa, y (2) examinar las perspectivas de investigación futura en estas dos subdisciplinas de la ecología. La Conferencia consistió en un total de 17 sesiones plenarias, en 10 comunicaciones orales impartidas por investigadores jóvenes (en formación o recientemente doctorados, los cuales fueron previamente seleccionados de un total de 30 candidatos por un Comité Científico), y en 8 talleres sobre temas considerados punteros dentro del área de conocimiento cubierta por la conferencia. La distribución geográfica de los participantes fue muy amplia: cerca de 150 participantes, de un total de 25 países, participaron en la reunión. Muchos de ellos eran investigadores jóvenes, lo que dio un importante componente de capacitación a los cuatro días que duró la Conferencia. El limitado número de asistentes y la extraordinaria atmósfera proporcionada por las instalaciones del Pueblo Español permitió un elevado nivel de interacción entre todos los participantes, lo que ayudó a que la Conferencia fuera un importante éxito.

Abstract: El conocimiento de la estructura y función del tejido adiposo es fundamental no sólo por el papel que desempeña en el metabolismo lipídico y en enfermedades endocrinas como la diabetes, sino también por su importante misión como elemento estructural de soporte mecánico y de modelado del contorno orgánico (facial, por ejemplo); de ahí su relevancia en el campo de la Cirugía Plástica, Reparadora y Estética. La cuantificación es un método que se practica desde los albores de la Histología. En el presente estudio nos referiremos exclusivamente a las metodologías estereológicas, herramientas libres de sesgo que aprovechan propiedades geométricas intrínsecas de las estructuras a cuantificar. En esencia, la estereología consiste en un conjunto de métodos morfométricos que obtienen datos cuantitativos tridimensionales a partir de elementos bidimensionales, utilizando propiedades geométricas intrínsecas a la estructura que se está estudiando. Describimos las metodologías estereológicas que conducen a la estimación no sesgada de la fracción de volumen de tejido adiposo en relación con el espacio de referencia, número relativo de adipocitos, y longitud relativa del lecho microvascular que irriga el tejido adiposo.

10. ¿Cuál es la supervivencia de los injertos de grasa en la cara? ¿Cómo cuantificarla?: medicina basada en la evidencia

Abstract: Muchos de los artículos publicados acerca del éxito de los injertos autólogos de grasa (IAG) en humanos son muy subjetivos o, en el mejor de los casos, semicuantitativos Hasta hoy, se necesitan estudios adicionales, tanto clínicos como básicos, antes de que podamos llegar a precisar el valor de esta técnica. Diseñamos un estudio prospectivo y randomizado con el objetivo de cuantificar la supervivencia de los autoinjertos de grasa en cara, en una serie seleccionada de 71 pacientes con defectos subcutáneos de partes blandas faciales que cumplieron criterios de inclusión, en dos grupos, según fueran casos de Cirugía Reconstructiva o de Cirugía Estética. El procedimiento quirúrgico estándar empleado fue la técnica de lipoestructura facial; se tomó biopsia del tejido adiposo injertado a los 14 meses de seguimiento. Empleamos el método estereológico para medir los parámetros volumétricos cuantitativos de la grasa en el momento de la inyección y en el momento de la biopsia. Por medio de simples ecuaciones matemáticas, pudimos extraer las tasas de prendimiento tanto volumétrica como numérica. También se practicaron análisis estadísticos descriptivos y cuantitativos de todos los datos. Los injertos de grasa autólogos en la cara sobreviven en dos tercios del volumen inyectado a los 14 meses de seguimiento. La única prueba confirmatoria de supervivencia de los autoin-jertos de grasa es la evidencia y demostración histológica de tejido adiposo viable en las zonas receptoras y su cuantificación mediante un método de evaluación volumétrico, preciso y objetivo, como el que permite la Estereología.

12. Evolución de las técnicas de minería de datos para extraer datos provenientes de twitter aplicadas a la educación superior: una revisión sistemática

Abstract: La Minería de Datos puede ser aplicada en datos provenientes de dos tipos de entornos educativos: el aula tradicional y la educación a distancia; por lo que, es necesario realizar un análisis independiente de las técnicas de Minería de Datos en cada entorno, debido a las diferentes fuentes de datos y propósitos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue identificar la evolución de las técnicas de Minería de Datos con la integración de la red social Twitter, y su aplicación en la educación superior; principalmente a causa del problema de salud mundial derivado del COVID-19, mediante una revisión sistemática de la literatura. La búsqueda de artículos fue realizada entre abril/2019 a noviembre/2022, en bases de datos como ACM, IEEE, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, entre otras. De los 55 artículos obtenidos, fueron seleccionados 31 que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. Los principales resultados indican que: 1) las técnicas de Minería de Datos más utilizadas son predictivas, con tareas y algoritmos de clasificación como «Naïve Bayes»; 2) Twitter es usado principalmente para: análisis de sentimientos y problemas estudiantiles, en su mayoría asociados al COVID-19; además es empleado para evaluar las preferencias de estudio; y 3) el 87% de artículos no especifica la aplicación de una práctica pedagógica. Con estos resultados, es posible determinar que, no existe un consenso sobre una metodología que integre los tres campos descritos, esto es: Minería de Datos, Twitter y educación superior; que brinden oportunidades a los actores de la educación, y permitan mejorar los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje.

Abstract: Uno de los problemas a los que se enfrenta el docente universitario, se relaciona con la falta de retroalimentación por parte de los estudiantes, que le permita conocer las dificultades que ellos enfrentan a la hora de adquirir conocimientos nuevos en clase. Algunos esfuerzos de investigación se han realizado para identificar y clasificar los problemas de los estudiantes, con datos provenientes de las redes sociales, pero limitando los criterios de búsqueda y recuperación de los datos. El presente artículo pretende cubrir la brecha dejada por los trabajos anteriores, mediante la creación de una metodología para predecir las dificultades de los estudiantes universitarios, que utiliza técnicas de extracción de datos provenientes de la red social Twitter y que ha sido plasmada en un flujo de trabajo, que integra técnicas de Minería de Textos, Procesamiento de Lenguaje Natural y Aprendizaje Profundo, usando Algoritmos Supervisados y Redes Neuronales Recurrentes. Para probar la metodología propuesta, se construyó un modelo de clasificación, cuya evaluación es prometedora, pues se alcanzó una precisión y exactitud del 80%. Los resultados obtenidos garantizan la predicción de las dificultades estudiantiles, dotando al docente de una herramienta efectiva para identificar las áreas que demanden mayor atención y poder así brindar ayuda oportuna a los estudiantes que tienen dificultades en el aula.

Abstract: Over time, cultural heritage has become a key for comprehending and developing our society at an individual and group level, as it provides fundamental information about our origins, specific temporary space, materials’ availability using current technology, artist’s intention, and site weather conditions. Here, we investigated the physical characteristics of an Italian large-format artwork diptych, located on the ceiling of the National Theater of Costa Rica, to evaluate its pictorial palette as well as the tropical climatological conditions and the fungal aerial spore concentration. We characterized the role of two innovative software tools, as they have direct connection with an effective microbiological sampling and description of secrets encompassed in each pictorial layer during the process of creation and intention. We further found that eight genera of calcareous nannofossils could be associated with the optical properties of the artwork and the effects that the artist wanted to portray through his creative process.

Abstract: Curving the CO2 atmospheric levels is one of the challenges of this century, given its direct impact on climate change. Of the several strategies of CO2 capture and storage, sorption-enhanced water–gas shift (SEWGS) process, a combination of CO2 adsorption and the water–gas shift reaction, has been appointed as one of the most promising techniques due to is low energy consumption and high efficiency. SEWGS operating settings at both moderate temperature (200–450 ◦C) and high pressure (more than 10 bar) bring the need to find an adsorbent capable of working at these conditions. Calcined layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been proven to give the best results in this range of pressure/temperatures even though its performance can be greatly improved. Herein, a state-of-art of the research accomplished up until now is presented. Abstract: Blood transfusion is given according to haemoglobin thresholds aimed at restoration of arterial oxygen-carrying capacity. Patient survival after severe haemorrhagic shock depends on restoration of microvascular perfusion, tissue oxygen delivery, endothelial function and organ integrity. We investigated a novel crystalloid fluid designed for tissue oxygen delivery, Oxsealife® , with components that generate microvascular nitric oxide and scavenge reactive oxygen species generated during ischaemia-reperfusion injury. The amount of dissolved oxygen in blood progressively increased during step-wise in vitro haemodilution with this fluid, suggesting that the oxygen solubility coefficient of blood is dynamic, not static. We performed a pilot safety and efficacy study to compare resuscitation with this novel crystalloid vs. whole blood transfusion in a swine haemorrhagic shock model with animals bled to an arterial lactate oxygen debt target. Despite contributing no haemoglobin, viscosity nor oncotic potential, resuscitation with Oxsealife after severe haemorrhagic shock restored central haemodynamic parameters comparable to stored allogeneic blood transfusion. Tissue perfusion, oxygenation and metabolic outcomes were equivalent between treatment groups. Increased consumption of bicarbonate in animals given Oxsealife suggested greater capillary recruitment and enhanced clearance of acidic tissue metabolites. Serum markers of organ function, animal activity during recovery and histological analysis of tissue morphology and endothelial glycocalyx integrity confirmed functional recovery from haemorrhagic shock. We conclude that recovery of tissue oxygen delivery and organ function after haemorrhagic shock may not be dependent on treatments that increase haemoglobin levels. Oxsealife shows promise for treatment of severe haemorrhagic shock and may reduce the requirement for allogeneic blood products.

Abstract: Data from past time periods and temporal correlation are rich sources of information for estimating small area parameters at the current period. This paper investigates the use of unit-level temporal linear mixed models for estimating linear parameters. Two models are considered, with domain and domain-time random effects. The first model assumes time independency and the second one AR(1)-type time correlation. They are fitted by a Fisher-scoring algorithm that calculates the residual maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters. Based on the introduced models, empirical best linear unbiased predictors of small area linear parameters are studied, and analytic estimators for evaluating the performance of their mean squared errors are proposed. Three simulation experiments are carried out to study the behaviour of the fitting algorithm, the small area predictors and the estimators of the mean squared error. Abstract: In this work, aluminum extracted from saline slag waste is valorized to create a layered double-hydroxide series containing zinc and various proportions of aluminum/titanium. Materials were synthesized by the co-precipitation method with an Me2+/Me3+ molar ratio of 3:1 and tested for the removal of diclofenac and salicylic acid from water under UV radiation. The incorporation of 5 wt% iron by wet impregnation is evaluated. In addition, another series of zinc, aluminum/iron materials with and without 5 wt% impregnated titanium are tested as catalysts for comparison. Structural characterization and comparison of the two series was performed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), nitrogen adsorption at 77 K, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) measurements. The uncalcinated samples had a typical hydrotalcite structure with a high crystallinity; the presence of ZnO, ZnFe2O4 or Fe3O4 was found after calcination. The specific surface areas of the dried samples ranged from 78 to 199 m2/g, being highest for Zn6Al0.5Ti1.5. Overall, the results showed that the ZnAlTi series were more effective catalysts than ZnAlFe for photodegradation of the emerging contaminants diclofenac and salicylic acid, under UV light at 298 K, considering two concentrations of the organic molecules (5 and 50 μmol/dm3). Abstract: We present a detailed study of a generalised one-dimensional Kronig–Penney model using $$\delta \text {-}\delta '$$ potentials. We analyse the band structure and the density of states in two situations. In the first case, we consider an infinite array formed by identical $$\delta \text {-}\delta '$$ potentials standing at the linear lattice nodes. This case will be known throughout the paper as the one-species hybrid Dirac comb. We investigate the consequences of adding the $$\delta '$$ interaction to the Dirac comb by comparing the band spectra and the density of states of pure Dirac- $$\delta $$ combs and one-species hybrid Dirac combs. Secondly, we study the quantum system that arises when the periodic potential is the one obtained from the superposition of two one-species hybrid Dirac combs displaced one with respect to the other and with different couplings. The latter will be known as the two-species hybrid Dirac comb. One of the most remarkable results is the appearance of a curvature change in the band spectrum when the $$\delta '$$ couplings are above a critical value.

Abstract: This work reports the synthesis of Zinc-Titanium-Aluminum (ZnTiAl) layered double hydroxides (LDH) with various proportions of Al[sbnd]Ti and a Zn/(Al[sbnd]Ti) molar ratio of 3:1 by the co-precipitation method. Two series, made with commercial aluminum (Al) and aluminum extracted from saline slags (Al*), have been considered. Structural characterization and comparison of the two series has been made using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Nitrogen physisorption at 77 K, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermogravimetry measurements. The adsorption capacity of diclofenac and salicylic acid, as examples of emergent pollutants, by the different LDH on batch and fixed-bed column experiments has been analyzed. The effect of various parameters, such as the pH, the initial concentration of pollutant, the mass of adsorbent and the contact time, on the sorption behavior were studied and compared. The contact time to attain equilibrium for maximum adsorption was found to be between 100 and 400 min. The kinetic and equilibrium results were correlated to several adsorption and isotherm equation models. The synthesized materials were more effective in removing diclofenac than salicylic acid, being Zn6Al*2 the hydrotalcite that showed the highest adsorption capacity. The results showed a new application of a material obtained from the valorization of an industrial waste such as aluminum saline slags. Abstract: This work presents the synthesis of Me2+ (Co, Mg, Ni and Zn)/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) with a 3:1 M ratio by the co-precipitation method. Structural characterization and comparison of the series has been achieved using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen physisorption at 77 K, thermogravimetry measurements (TGA), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) and point of zero charge (pHpzc). Batch experiments were performed to analyze the adsorption capacity of the different LDH on diclofenac and salicylic acid, as example of emergent pollutants. The pH, mass of adsorbent, contact time and concentration of pollutant were the parameters used to compare the adsorption performance of the synthesized materials. Samples showed different behavior and the equilibrium was reached at different times, Mg6Al2 and Zn6Al2 showed lower equilibrium times but had higher adsorption capacity. Various adsorption and isotherm equation models were employed to study both the kinetic and equilibrium results and, in general, the removal of diclofenac was greater than that of salicylic acid. 1-Butanol conversion was also used as a means of acidity and basicity characterization and the results were compared with the adsorption performance of the samples in order to explain the results found. A relationship between the amount of pollutants adsorbed and the butenes formed in the dehydrogenation reaction of 1-butanol was found. Abstract: Currently, the Ecuadorian footwear industry faces competitiveness problems with products that enter the country with advantages in terms of quality, design, and price, factors that have captured the preference of local consumers. The purpose of this work is to highlight the value of design in the footwear industry in Ecuador, contributing with a proposal focused on ethnic fashion, using typical and traditional Ecuadorian elements and forms as a strategy of differentiation in the generation of products with identity, which allow competitiveness within the national market and subsequently international. For this purpose, Etnika was born, a brand of traditional Ecuadorian women's casual footwear, that proposes the application of a business model focused on “slow fashion” based on a specific market study, which has shown preference in aspects that involve factors such as new materials, design ethics, eco-friendly manufacturing processes, fair trade, quality, and added value.

Abstract: Emerging contaminants and, among them, pharmaceutical compounds, have a significant impact on water ecosystems. Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH), being easy to synthesize and cheap materials, have recently gained attention as adsorbents in aqueous solutions. This work describes the latest research performed in the adsorption capacity of LDH towards both antibiotics and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) describing and analyzing the synthesis conditions (Me2+:Me3+ molar ratio, calcination temperature, choice of metals for the memory effect), kinetics and isotherm models used, use of support (more practical in a 3D over a 2D form), temperature effect and several techniques for the recovery of the adsorbents. LDH exhibited great performance and potential as clean adsorbents for these emerging contaminants. Abstract: The revolution in Ecuadorian shoe industry represents a big challenge because of the proliferation of imported products. This tariff advantage put the Ecuadorian entrepreneurs in a comfort zone, evidencing a stagnation in the evolution of products with differentiation strategies in opposition to globalized products. To this problem are added limiting factors such as raw materials and imported inputs. The current work studies the situation of the Ecuadorian entrepreneurs of the National Camera of Footwear in the Tungurahua province in order to know its reality and determine strengths and weaknesses of the sector and strategies to promote the productive matrix of Ecuador. The research exposes the impact that a proposed product can have from a strategic vision of differentiation through sustainability of Ecuadorian footwear.

Abstract: A commercial multiwalled carbon nanotube has been used to adsorb caffeine and diclofenac, which are representative anthropogenic markers for wastewater contamination of surface waters. The effect that several parameters, such as the initial concentration of organic molecules, the mass of adsorbent and the contact time, may have on the adsorption behavior of the solid has also been studied. In addition, the adsorption kinetics were studied and found to best fit pseudo-second-order and intraparticle-diffusion models. Equilibrium, which was usually achieved after a contact time of 30 min, is described using various isotherm equation models. After treatment with HCl, the adsorbent was found to maintain its adsorption capacity after one cycle of reuse.

36. Training program for researchers in design and manufacturing of experimental prototypes for fluids engineering using additive technologies

Abstract: Experimental testing is one of the pillars in Fluids Engineering research. The arrival of rapid prototyping, and especially, Additive Manufacturing (AM), has revolutionized this field, allowing fast and flexible prototype manufacturing. Among these technologies, Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) allows to fabricate complex parts using light, resistant, composite materials at a very affordable cost. To harness the full potential of this technology, the fluid dynamics engineering research group (GIFD) of the University of Oviedo started a training program for researchers in this area. This rich and complete program is presented herein, emphasizing its elaborate methodology and highlighting the successful case-studies derived from its application. Knowledge and integration of this technology has granted the capability of self-manufacturing customizable, low-cost experimental prototypes with adequate mechanical properties and accuracy, which produce high-quality results. Additionally, it has widened remarkably the possibilities of experimental research, resulting in a significant increase of experimental publications.

Abstract: Clay minerals are a very interesting platform for the development of novel functional materials. For years, there has been a growing interest in this field because clays offer different possibilities for the design of functional materials with various possible applications, such as adsorbents, drug delivery systems, catalysts, photocatalysts and nanocomposites. This review highlights mainly, but not only, tailored functionalized clay minerals containing amino groups, which are widely employed due to their simplicity and efficiency. Their use as adsorbents of several classes of water contaminants, including emerging organic pollutants, drugs, surfactants, pesticides, anions, and heavy metals, as well as of contaminants in the gaseous phase, namely CO2, is also reviewed, and removal strategies based on these amino-functionalized materials are presented.

Abstract: Poverty proportions are averages of dichotomic variables that can be explained by unit-level binomial-logit mixed models. The change between the poverty proportions of two consecutive years is an indicator describing the evolution of poverty. This paper applies a unit-level temporal binomial-logit mixed model for estimating poverty proportions and their changes. The model parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood method for the Laplace approximation of the loglikelihood. The empirical best predictors (EBP) of proportions and changes are calculated and compared with plug-in estimators. The mean squared error of the EBP is estimated by a parametric bootstrap. A simulation experiment is carried out to study the empirical behavior of the EBP and the plug-in estimators. An application to the estimation of poverty proportions and changes in counties of the region of Valencia, Spain, is given.

Abstract: The basic thermodynamic quantities for a non-interacting scalar field in a periodic potential composed of either a one-dimensional chain of Dirac $\delta$-$\delta^\prime$ functions or a specific potential with extended compact support are calculated. First, we consider the representation in terms of real frequencies (or one-particle energies). Then we turn the axis of frequency integration towards the imaginary axis by a finite angle, which allows for easy numerical evaluation, and finally turn completely to the imaginary frequencies and derive the corresponding Matsubara representation, which this way appears also for systems with band structure. In the limit case $T \to 0$ we confirm earlier results on the vacuum energy. We calculate for the mentioned examples the free energy and the entropy and generalize earlier results on negative entropy., Comment: some typos have been corrected and some comments have been added to clarify certain parts of the paper Accepted for publication in Eur. Abstract: An institutional management model focused on the optimization of processes and services that emulates a Smart City on a smaller scale is the proposal that the Technical University of Ambato must direct its development towards a vision of efficient connectivity, reduction of resources and the approach to a Green workflow. The current problem of bureaucracy existing in public institutions in developing countries is a factor that leads to unsuccessful expenditure of time, money and personnel that must generate several steps within the value chain and due process to achieve a procedure that results in an action or service.. The model proposal focuses on the connectivity between teachers, students and the institution for the automation of activities that were performed manually, generating a virtual model that reduces time and processes; the use of security devices for the identification of people within the university environment and the communication carried out mainly through wearables with support of touch screens, mobile devices and apps; these tools will serve as a support for fast and fluid results under a solid data platform, that allows the collection of relevant information of diverse nature and its application to solve specific needs of the institutional and academic environment.

Abstract: This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Environmental Technology on 2018-12-13, available online:https://doi.org/10.1080/09593330.2018.1555285 Titanium dioxide modified with Ag and Fe was synthesized using two preparation methods, characterized and applied to the photocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid in aqueous solution. The modified TiO2 samples were prepared by the sol–gel and wet impregnation methods starting from titanium(IV) isopropoxide and using AgNO3 and Fe(NO3)3·9H2O as precursors of the modifiers, with their content varying between 0 and 5 wt.%. Catalysts characterization was based on powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), nitrogen physisorption at 77 K, temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), chemisorption of NH3 at 343 K and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid by modified TiO2 was investigated under ultraviolet irradiation at 298 K considering various concentrations of the catalyst, between 100 and 1000 mgcatalyst/dm3, and of the organic molecule, between 0 and 15 mg/dm3.
