Abstract: Abstract Rare-event search experiments located on-surface, such as short-baseline reactor neutrino experiments, are often limited by muon-induced background events. Highly efficient muon vetos are essential to reduce the detector background and to reach the sensitivity goals. We demonstrate the feasibility of deploying organic plastic scintillators at sub-Kelvin temperatures. For the NUCLEUS experiment, we developed a cryogenic muon veto equipped with wavelength shifting fibers and a silicon photo multiplier operating inside a dilution refrigerator. The achievable compactness of cryostat-internal integration is a key factor in keeping the muon rate to a minimum while maximizing coverage. The thermal and light output properties of a plastic scintillation detector were examined. We report first data on the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the polystyrene-based scintillator UPS-923A over a wide range of temperatures extending below one Kelvin. The light output was measured down to 0.8 K and observed to increase by a factor of 1.61 ± 0.05 compared to 300 K. The development of an organic plastic scintillation muon veto operating in sub-Kelvin temperature environments opens new perspectives for rare-event searches with cryogenic detectors at sites lacking substantial overburden.

Abstract: Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e. comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $${5 \times 10^{-3}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 \lesssim \varDelta m^2_{41} \lesssim {3 \times 10^{-1}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 $$ 5 × 10 - 3 eV 2 ≲ Δ m 41 2 ≲ 3 × 10 - 1 eV 2 for mixing angles down to $$\sin ^2 2\theta _{14} \gtrsim {0.02} $$ sin 2 2 θ 14 ≳ 0.02 . No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $$\theta _{13} $$ θ 13 is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $$\theta _{14} $$ θ 14 as a function of $$ \varDelta m^2_{41} $$ Δ m 41 2 are obtained.

Abstract: Abstract A θ 13 oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ 13 and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν ¯ e $$ {\overline{\nu}}_e $$ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and 9Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin2(2θ 13) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ 13 to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation.

Abstract: Abstract Coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering ($$\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$$ CEνNS ) offers a unique way to study neutrino properties and to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Nuclear reactors are promising sources to explore this process at low energies since they deliver large fluxes of anti-neutrinos with typical energies of a few MeV. In this paper, a new-generation experiment to study $$\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$$ CEνNS is described. The NUCLEUS experiment will use cryogenic detectors which feature an unprecedentedly low-energy threshold and a time response fast enough to be operated under above-ground conditions. Both sensitivity to low-energy nuclear recoils and a high event rate tolerance are stringent requirements to measuring $$\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$$ CEνNS of reactor anti-neutrinos. A new experimental site, the Very-Near-Site (VNS), at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France is described. The VNS is located between the two 4.25 $$\hbox {GW}_{\mathrm {th}}$$ GWth reactor cores and matches the requirements of NUCLEUS. First results of on-site measurements of neutron and muon backgrounds, the expected dominant background contributions, are given. In this paper a preliminary experimental set-up with dedicated active and passive background reduction techniques and first background estimations are presented. Furthermore, the feasibility to operate the detectors in coincidence with an active muon veto at shallow overburden is studied. The paper concludes with a sensitivity study pointing out the physics potential of NUCLEUS at the Chooz nuclear power plant.

Abstract: Abstract The yields and production rates of the radioisotopes 9Li and 8He created by cosmic muon spallation on 12C, have been measured by the two detectors of the Double Chooz experiment. The identical detectors are located at separate sites and depths, which means that they are subject to different muon spectra. The near (far) detector has an overburden of ∼120 m.w.e. (∼300 m.w.e.) corresponding to a mean muon energy of 32.1 ± 2.0 GeV (63.7 ± 5.5 GeV). Comparing the data to a detailed simulation of the 9Li and 8He decays, the contribution of the 8He radioisotope at both detectors is found to be compatible with zero. The observed 9Li yields in the near and far detectors are 5.51 ± 0.51 and 7.90 ± 0.51, respectively, in units of 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. The shallow overburdens of the near and far detectors give a unique insight when combined with measurements by KamLAND and Borexino to give the first multi-experiment, data driven relationship between the 9Li yield and the mean muon energy according to the power law Y = Y 0 E μ / 1 GeV α ¯ $$ Y = {Y}_0{\left(\left\langle {E}_{\mu}\right\rangle /1\ GeV\right)}^{\overline{\alpha}} $$ , giving α ¯ = 0.72 ± 0.06 $$ \overline{\alpha} = 0.72 \pm 0.06 $$ and Y 0 = (0.43 ± 0.11) × 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. This relationship gives future liquid scintillator based experiments the ability to predict their cosmogenic 9Li background rates.

Abstract: International audience; NUCLEUS is an experiment conceived for the detection of thecoherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering. The experiment will be carried out in the nuclear power plant of Chooz-B in France that provides an intense flux of anti-neutrinos.The aim of NUCLEUS is to perform a very precise measurement of the coherent elastic scattering below 100 eV by employing extremely sensitive cryogenic detectors based on CaWO$_4$ and Al$_2$O$_3$ target crystals.At present, the NUCLEUS apparatus is in commissioning phaseat the Underground Laboratory of the Technical University Munich, where - after its installation and the first measurement phase - the experiment will be fully tested. Thereafter the entire apparatus will be moved to the reactor site at Chooz.

Abstract: Synopsis: The Iseult project started in 2001 and is a collaborative effort involving CEA and the University of Freiburg in academics, Guerbet, Siemens Healthineers and Bruker Biospin as industrial partners. One central aspect of the project has been the design by CEA of a whole-body magnet of 11.7T field strength with a 90- cm wide bore. After nearly 20 years of research and development, prototyping, integration and tests, first images have been acquired with this unique MRI scanner. Some key validation results are presented here.&nbsp

Abstract: A θ oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν¯ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin(2θ) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation. Abstract: We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e.\ comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $5 \cdot 10^{-3} $ eV$^2 \lesssim \Delta m^2_{41} \lesssim 3\cdot 10^{-1} $ eV$^2$ for mixing angles down to $\sin^2 2\theta_{14} \gtrsim 0.02$. No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $\theta_{13} $ is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $\theta_{14} $ as function of $ \Delta m^2_{41} $ are obtained., Comment: accepted for publication by EPJC

Abstract: Coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering ($$\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$$ CEνNS ) offers a unique way to study neutrino properties and to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Nuclear reactors are promising sources to explore this process at low energies since they deliver large fluxes of anti-neutrinos with typical energies of a few MeV. In this paper, a new-generation experiment to study $$\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$$ CEνNS is described. The NUCLEUS experiment will use cryogenic detectors which feature an unprecedentedly low-energy threshold and a time response fast enough to be operated under above-ground conditions. Both sensitivity to low-energy nuclear recoils and a high event rate tolerance are stringent requirements to measuring $$\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$$ CEνNS of reactor anti-neutrinos. A new experimental site, the Very-Near-Site (VNS), at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France is described. The VNS is located between the two 4.25 $$\hbox {GW}_{\mathrm {th}}$$ GWth reactor cores and matches the requirements of NUCLEUS. First results of on-site measurements of neutron and muon backgrounds, the expected dominant background contributions, are given. In this paper a preliminary experimental set-up with dedicated active and passive background reduction techniques and first background estimations are presented. Furthermore, the feasibility to operate the detectors in coincidence with an active muon veto at shallow overburden is studied. The paper concludes with a sensitivity study pointing out the physics potential of NUCLEUS at the Chooz nuclear power plant.

Abstract: The NUCLEUS experiment aims for the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at a nuclear power reactor with gram-scale, ultra-low-threshold cryogenic detectors. This technology leads to a miniaturization of neutrino detectors and allows to probe physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. A 0.5 g NUCLEUS prototype detector, operated above ground in 2017, reached an energy threshold for nuclear recoils of below 20 eV. This sensitivity is achieved with tungsten transition edge sensors which are operating at temperatures of 15 mK and are mainly sensitive to non-thermal phonons. These small recoil energies become accessible for the first time with this technology, which allows collecting large-statistics neutrino event samples with a moderate detector mass. A first-phase cryogenic detector array with a total mass of 10 g enables a 5-sigma observation of coherent scattering within several weeks. We identified a suitable experimental site at the Chooz Nuclear Power Plant and performed muon and neutron background measurements there. The operation of a NUCLEUS cryogenic detector array at such a site requires highly efficient background suppression. NUCLEUS plans to use an innovative technique consisting of separate cryogenic anticoincidence detectors against surface backgrounds and penetrating (gamma, neutron) radiation. We present first results from prototypes of these veto detectors and their operation in coincidence with a NUCLEUS target detector.

Abstract: International audience; Saclay CEA/IRFU is working for the delivery of five Non-Invasive Profile Monitors in the frame of the in-kind contribution agreement signed with the European Spallation Source. Neutrons will be produced by spallation reactions of 2 GeV proton beam impinging on a Tungsten target. To accelerate protons a powerful linear accelerator of 5MW is under construction. Diagnostic devices are mandatory tools for the tuning and protection of the machine. The non-invasive profile monitors provide a measurement of the beam profile in transverse directions to the beam propagation. This project raises several physical and technical challenges including low signal detection of ions or electrons, profile distortions induced by the beam Space Charge effect and non-uniformities of electric field. Simulation and model of the critical aspects of the detector have been performed in order to prove the performance and the feasibility of the detector. A series of prototypes has been built with different readout types, and tested in real conditions at the 3MeV proton accelerator IPHI. All of them show some advantages and drawbacks revealed by the tests in real beam conditions. In this paper we present the results of the tests for the various configuration readout systems to agree with the model and simulation of the detector. In concluding remarks, we will discuss the performance of the prototypes and point out the camerabased one to be the more suitable for the final design.Key words: Beam diagnostic / Linear proton accelerators / MCP / Strip detector / Particle beam measurements

Abstract: A new innovative whole-body 11.7-T MRI magnet is currently being manufactured at Alstom Belfort as part the Iseult/Inumac project, a French-German initiative focused on very high magnetic field molecular imaging. It will be installed at the end of year 2016 in a neuroscience research center with other very high field MRI equipment, operating in France at CEA Saclay since November 2006. The main coil constructed from a stack of 170 double pancakes of 2-m diameter, with a finished height of 4 m and 50 t in weight, has been completed within required tolerances. The two shielding coils, vacuum impregnated solenoids of 4 m in diameter and 10 t in weight, have been also completed within tolerances. A crack has been discovered inside the 2-m diameter mandrel of the cryogenic correction coils. A new mandrel has been manufactured, with delivery in July 2015. The main coil and the shielding coils have been integrated inside the helium vessel, and the assembly of thermal shield and vacuum vessel is due to start, with completion expected by the middle of 2016. The magnet will be serviced by a separate cryogenic and electrical facility; the installation of this external equipment will be completed by the end of 2015 when the first phase of the commissioning will start. Full tests and commissioning of the magnet at 1.8 K are expected at NeuroSpin at the beginning of 2017.

Abstract: Aim of this study: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by compromised bone structure and resistance and by an increased risk of fracture especially in postmenopausal women. Multiple factors including hormonal, environmental and genetic factors are involved in osteoporosis development and clinical outcome. It has been shown that Klotho and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) have a significant effect on aging and osteoporosis risk. Actually, Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a critical polypeptide that plays an important role in the regulation of bone metabolism, which promotes bone cell growth, differentiation, cell cycle progression. Klotho modulates aging in mice and humans, Klotho membrane-bound protein serves as a co-receptor required for the fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), the link between Klotho and FGF23 creates a negative feedback that blocks the enzyme that converts 25-hydroxy Vitamin D to the active form (1,25 dihydroxy Vitamin D). Thus, klotho and FGF23 may function in a common signal transduction pathway in maintaining mineral ion homeostasis. Considering that some gene variant might influence production level and function of these mediators, we have started the evaluation of associations among IGF-1, IGF-1R and Klotho 1 SNPs and osteoporosis risk. Methods: In this preliminary approach, a total of 20 women with diagnosis of osteoporosis confirmed by radiograph or DEXA scan and a total of 72 healthy control women were included in the study. For the genetic analysis, peripheral blood samples were collected and genomic DNA was extracted from leukocytes. Genotypic analysis of polymorphisms of Klotho 1 (rs577912), IGF-1(rs35767), IGF-1R was conducted using a competitive allele specific PCR assays (KASpar) developed by Kbioscence. Genotype and allele frequencies were compared by statistical analysis using dominant, codominant, and recessive models. Results: In our study, the analysis of genotypic and allelic frequencies has highlighted, that IGF-I rs35767 genotypes positive for T allele are more represented in cases than in controls and could be associated with susceptibility to osteoporosis (P = 0.0327 OR= 4.529; 95% C.I.: 1.27 - 16.1). Instead, the SNP of Klotho 1 and IGF-I R have in our case subjects a frequency not different from that of the controls. Discussion and Conclusion: Our results are in full agreement with those from Zhang et al. (Genet Mol Res. 2015; 14: 7655-60) reporting association of T+ genotypes of rs35767 with lower BMD levels in the femoral neck. This preliminary result suggests that polymorphism in IGF-I rs35767 might play a role in osteoporosis risk and could be considered a potential indicator for risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Abstract: Aim of the study: The incidence of the vast majority of cancers, including melanoma and not melanocytic skin cancer (NMSC) increases with advancing age. However, the mechanism by which aging influences the risk of developing cancer is not fully understood. Whether this is attributable to declines in immunity or other changes, such as changes in the aging microenvironment, remains unclear. Amongst the many proteins implicated in aging is the protein Klotho. Loss of Klotho function results in the early appearance of several pathologies associated with human aging, downregulation of Klotho was found in several cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, HCC, and other tumors. Downregulation of Klotho resulted in promoted proliferation and reduced apoptosis of cancer cells. At the gene level mRNA expression and Klotho protein production is influenced by the presence of a number of SNPs. In particular, the Klotho rs577912, located in intron 1 of the Klotho gene might affect Klotho function. Cells from subjects who had either AA or AC genotype at rs577912 expressed higher levels of Klotho mRNA compared with subjects CC positive. In this view we are evaluating the role of Klotho rs577912 in not melanocytic skin cancer susceptibility. Methods: A group of 44 individuals diagnosed as affected by not melanocytic skin cancer (including 29 Basal Cell Cancer and 15 Squamous Cell Cancer) and 96 unrelated healthy subjects were typed for Klotho1 rs577912, using KASPar SNP genotyping method. Data were statistically analyzed using dominant, codominant, and recessive models. Results: Frequencies of rs577912 Klotho1 genotypes were not different between patients and controls with the exception of a not significant increased frequency of ancestral cytokine homozygous CC genotype in the patients respect to the controls. Conclusions: these preliminary results seem to suggest that Klotho l rs577912 is not involved in NMSC susceptibility.

Abstract: International audience; The third phase of the Borexino experiment that’s referred to as SOX is devoted to test the hypothesis of the existence of one (or more) sterile neutrinos at a short baseline (~5–10m). The experimental measurement will be made with artificial sources namely with a 144Ce–144Pr antineutrino source at the first stage (CeSOX) and possibly with a 51Cr neutrino source at the second one. The fixed 144Ce–144Pr sample will be placed beneath the detector in a special pit and the initial activity will be about 100 – 150 kCi. The start of data taking is scheduled for April 2018. The article gives a short description of the preparation for the first stage and shows the expected sensitivity.

Abstract: International audience; The large size and the very low radioactive background of solar neutrino detectors such as Borexino at the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy offer a unique opportunity to probe the existence of neutrino oscillations into new sterile components by means of carefully designed and well calibrated anti-neutrino and neutrino artificial sources. In this paper we briefly summarise the key elements of the SOX experiment, a program for the search of sterile neutrinos (and other short distance effects) by means of a (144)Ce-(144)Pr anti-neutrino source and, possibly in the medium term future, with a (51)Cr neutrino source.

Abstract: Originally designed as a new nuclear reactor monitoring device, the Nucifer detector has successfully detected its first neutrinos. We provide the second shortest baseline measurement of the reactor neutrino flux. The detection of electron antineutrinos emitted in the decay chains of the fission products, combined with reactor core simulations, provides an new tool to assess both the thermal power and the fissile content of the whole nuclear core and could be used by the Inter- national Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) to enhance the Safeguards of civil nuclear reactors. Deployed at only 7.2m away from the compact Osiris research reactor core (70MW) operating at the Saclay research centre of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the experiment also exhibits a well-suited configuration to search for a new short baseline oscillation. We report the first results of the Nucifer experiment, describing the performances of the 0.85m3 detector remotely operating at a shallow depth equivalent to 12m of water and under intense background radiation conditions. Based on 145 (106) days of data with reactor ON (OFF), leading to the detection of an estimated 40760 electron antineutrinos, the mean number of detected antineutrinos is 281 +- 7(stat) +- 18(syst) electron antineutrinos/day, in agreement with the prediction 277(23) electron antineutrinos/day. Due the the large background no conclusive results on the existence of light sterile neutrinos could be derived, however. Abstract: International audience; In order to perform a resolutive measurement to clarify the neutrino anomalies and to observe possible short distance neutrino oscillations, the SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillations with BoreXino) experiment is under construction. In the first phase, a 100 kCi (144)Ce-(144)Pr antineutrino source will be placed under the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), in center of Italy, and the rate measurement of the antineutrino events, observed by the very low radioactive background Borexino detector, will be compared with the high precision (< 1%) activity measurement performed by two calorimeters. The source will be embedded in a 19 mm thick tungsten alloy shield and both the calorimeters have been conceived for measuring the thermal heat absorbed by a water flow. In this report the design of the calorimeters will be described in detail and very preliminary results will be also shown.

Abstract: International audience; Borexino is an unsegmented neutrino detector operating at LNGS in central Italy. The experiment has shown its performances through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geoneutrino detection. These performances make it an ideal tool to accomplish a state- of-the-art experiment able to test the existence of sterile neutrinos (SOX experiment). For both the solar and the SOX analysis, a good understanding of the detector response is fundamental. Consequently, calibration campaigns with radioactive sources have been performed over the years. The calibration data are of extreme importance to develop an accurate Monte Carlo code. This code is used in all the neutrino analyses. The Borexino-SOX calibration techniques and program and the advances on the detector simulation code in view of the start of the SOX data taking are presented. (1)

Abstract: The Borexino detector has convincingly shown its outstanding performance in the in the sub-MeV regime through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geo-neutrinos detection, which make it the ideal tool to unambiguously test the long-standing issue of the existence of a sterile neutrino, as suggested by several anomalies: the outputs of the LSND and Miniboone experiments, the results of the source calibration of the two Gallium solar ν experiments, and the recently hinted reactor anomaly. The SOX project will exploit two sources, based on chromium and cerium, which deployed under the experiment will emit two intense beams of ν e (Cr) and ν e ‾ (Ce). Interacting in the active volume of the liquid scintillator, each beam would create a spatial wave pattern in case of oscillation of the ν e (or ν e ‾ ) into the sterile state, which would be the smoking gun proving the existence of the new sterile member of the neutrino family. Otherwise, its absence will allow setting very stringent limit on its existence.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of the SOX-Borexino project is to verify or falsify the existence of eV-scale sterile neutrinos. The existence of sterile neutrinos is suspected because of several anomalies, which were observed in previous experiments. A ~3.7 PBq electron antineutrino source made of$^{144}$Ce will be installed below the Borexino detector at LNGS, Italy, to search for short-baseline oscillations of active-to-sterile neutrinos within the detector volume. Source delivery and beginning of data acquisition is planned for end of 2016, preliminary results are expected already in 2017.

Abstract: International audience; The Borexino detector has convincingly shown its outstanding performances in the low energy, sub-MeV regime through its unprecedented accomplishments in the solar and geo-neutrinos detection. These performances make it the ideal tool to accomplish a state-of-the-art experiment able to test unambiguously the long-standing issue of the existence of a sterile neutrino, as suggested by the several anomalous results accumulated over the past two decades, i.e. the outputs of the LSND and Miniboone experiments, the results of the source calibration of the two Gallium solar neutrino experiments, and the recently hinted reactor anomaly. The SOX project will exploit two sources, based on Chromium and Cerium, respectively, which deployed under the experiment, in a location foreseen on purpose at the time of the construction of the detector, will emit two intense beams of neutrinos (Cr) and anti-neutrinos (Ce). Interacting in the active volume of the liquid scintillator, each beam would create an unmistakable spatial wave pattern in case of oscillation of the nu_e (or nu̅_e) into the sterile state: such a pattern would be the smoking gun proving the existence of the new sterile member of the neutrino family. Otherwise, its absence will allow setting a very stringent limit on its existence.

Abstract: International audience; The SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillations with BoreXino) project aims at testing the light sterile neutrino hypothesis. To do so, two artificials sources of antineutrinos and neutrinos respectively will be consecutively deployed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in close vicinity to Borexino, a large liquid scintillator detector. This document reports on the source production and transportation. The source should exhibit a long lifetime and a high decay energy, a requirement fullfilled by the (144)Ce-(144)Pr pair at secular equilibrium. It will be produced at FSUE “Mayak” PA using spent nuclear fuel. It will then be shielded and packed according to international regulation and shipped to LNGS across Europe. Knowledge of the Cerium antineutrino generator (CeANG) parameters is crucial for SOX as it can strongly impact the experiment sensitivity. Several apparatuses are being used or designed to characterize CeANG activity, radioactive emission and content. An overview of the measurements performed so far is presented here.

Abstract: International audience; The Borexino detector has convincingly shown its outstanding performances in the low energy regime through its accomplishments in the observation and study of the solar and geo neutrinos. It is then an ideal tool to perform a state of the art source-based experiment for testing the longstanding hypothesis of a fourth sterile neutrino with ~ eV(2) mass, as suggested by several anomalies accumulated over the past three decades in source, reactor, and accelerator-based experiments. The SOX project aims at successively deploying two intense radioactive sources, made of Cerium (antineutrino) and Chromium (neutrino), respectively, in a dedicated pit located beneath the detector. The existence of such an ~ eV(2) sterile neutrino would then show up as an unambiguous spatial and energy distortion in the count rate of neutrinos interacting within the active detector volume. This article reports on the latest developments about the first phase of the SOX experiment, namely CeSOX, and gives a realistic projection of CeSOX sensitivity to light sterile neutrinos in a simple (3+1) model.

Abstract: Asthma and allergic rhinitis are among the commonest causes of chronic illness (World Allergy Organization, 2013). The pathophysiology of these allergic disorders is complex and caused by largely uncharacterized interaction between genes and environmental factors. The genetic components of allergy, however, are still currently under study with the use of genomewide or candidate gene linkage analysis and association, interaction and functional studies. Risk assessment with the use of a single candidate gene variant might not show the actual effect on the disease outcome given the multifactorial nature of chronic diseases. NonMendelian forms of inheritance, the ubiquitous characteristic of biomolecular communication and the inconsistent results of several single-variant, single-gene studies all support the idea that gene-gene interactions are common and can best describe the disease symptoms1. Several tools are being used to detect significant association of gene-gene interaction with the disease phenotype. In this study, we utilized a frequent itemset mining methods to identify genetic and clinical elements that often co-occur in a dataset involving allergic patients and healthy subjects. Originally the model of this method was the Market Basket Analysis (MBA) and was applied to analyse buying habits of consumers. Nowadays MBA is used in bioinformatics to identify biologically relevant patterns that can be interpreted in a biological context as the associations between allelic combinations with diseases. We applied this method to enlight the genetic and biological complexities of asthma and allergic rhinitis, frequently associated in atopic subjects and generally considered as two different features of the same airway disease in which the presence of the rhinitis increases the chance of development of asthma by about three times.

Abstract: To investigate the effects of the static magnetic field (SMF) generated by a 0.5 T superconducting MRI unit on in vitro activation marker expression and interleukin release in human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples from healthy volunteers.PBMC samples were split into two groups: exposed and sham-exposed under isothermal conditions. PBMC were exposed for 2 h at 24 degrees C to the SMF of a 0.5 T superconducting MRI unit. Immediately after exposure, both samples were cultured for 24 h at 37 degrees C with or without mitogenic stimulation by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). PBMC were examined for expression of CD25, CD69 and CD71 by immunofluorescence analysis and supernatants were assayed to quantify IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha and IL-4 by ELISA.The 0.5 T SMF produced, after 24 h of culture, a reduced expression of CD69 from PBMC in vitro, that was enhanced after PHA stimulation. An increased release of IFN-gamma and IL-4 was also found, which was reduced after PHA stimulation. The release of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-10 was not modified.The SMF generated by a 0.5 T superconducting MRI unit modified in vitro activation marker expression and interleukin release from human PBMC.

Abstract: In the light of the key role played by interferon (IFN)-gamma in the control of tuberculosis, in the present paper we have evaluated the distribution of the functional +874T --A IFN-gamma single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in Sicilian patients affected by tuberculosis. Our aim was to determine whether there is an association between the TT genotype, which has been suggested to be linked to an increased production of IFN-gamma, and resistance to chronic tuberculosis. DNA samples were obtained from 45 patients and 97 healthy controls. Polymorphism at +874 was identified using amplification refractory mutational system methodology. The +874T SNP was less frequent in patients than in controls (0.42 vs. 0.50) but the difference was not significant. The +874TT genotype, which has been suggested to be associated with high IFN-gamma production, was significantly decreased in the patients. Thus, resistance to chronic lung tuberculosis might be associated with a genetically determined high IFN-gamma production capacity. In conclusion, the present data add another piece of evidence to the complex puzzle of genetic and environmental factors involved in control of infectious diseases. Studies on cytokine gene polymorphisms may elucidate the complex network of trans-interactive genes influencing the type and strength of responses to environmental stressors and may help to identify the genetic factors that affect survival in humans.

The data was separated in groups that pointed to two categories and their elements: the expressive care and the professional care. Expressive care presented itself as: affection, giving, being present, protection, concerning, being available, understanding, respecting, comforting, being responsible, solidarity, providing security, having intention, sharing/exchanging. Professional care showed to be: assist/care, technical competence, professional knowledge and to like what is done.

Abstract: The elucidation of the molecular basis of hyperphenylalaninemia in various world populations (PKU Consortium Database: http://www.mcgill.ca/pahdb/) has revealed a remarkable molecular heterogeneity at the locus encoding for phenylalanine hydroxylase. As a consequence, genotyping of HPA patients has prompted the establishment of an impressive number of mutation detection protocols. In spite of the large variety of methods proposed so far, no comprehensive strategy has been yet developed for the detection of PAH gene mutations. Therefore, new approaches, combining the advantages of individual methods are required, especially in populations with a high number of PAH gene mutations. In this study, we propose the use of Reverse Dot Blot Analysis within a general mutation detection protocol to simplify the genotyping of hyperphenylalaninemics in the very heterogeneous population of Sicily (Italy).

Abstract: In response to the need for better, faster, and more cost-effective cleanups, many countries have initiated programs to commercialize innovative technologies for hazardous waste site remediation. At the same time, technology vendors are seeking to expand their markets into the international arena. Experience to date has shown that technologies can face initial barriers from inherent differences in each country’s approach to environmental remediation. Approaches vary based on the differing levels of development and structures of environmental programs in each country. To bridge the differences between Germany and the United States of America (U.S.), the two countries are collaborating to develop an integrated approach to standards and protocols for evaluating innovative technologies. The U.S. and German Bilateral Agreement on Remediation of Hazardous Waste Sites (bilateral agreement), established between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Germany’s Bundesministerium fur Forschung und Technologie (BMFT, translated as German Federal Ministry for Research and Technology) [Refer to Sanning and Schroeter Abstract], is the result of a research and development joint venture between EPA and BMFT that was established to compare innovative approaches to remediating hazardous waste sites. This comparison is accomplished by exchanging regulatory, technical, and business information on new hazardous waste cleanup technologies and by co-evaluating technology demonstrations in each country. The combination of EPA and BMFT resources allows innovative technologies to be evaluated by both countries and provides an international perspective to technology vendors about how their technology will potentially perform in the each country.

Abstract: A technology evaluation was performed by applying SoilTech‘s Anaerobic Thermal Process to PCB-contaminated soil and harbor sediments at the Outboard Marine Corporation site in Waukegan, Illinois. The demonstration was conducted in compliance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency‘s (U.S.EPA) Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program. This demonstration was also evaluated under a bilateral agreement between the U.S.EPA and the German Bundesminster fur Forschung and Technologie (BMFT). The bilateral project is presented from the German perspective and focusses on the quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) aspects of the sampling and analysis performed at the Waukegan site.

Abstract: Ageing is a natural and physiological condition that is the result of compromised stress response, homeostatic imbalance and increased risk of developing diseases. However, if aging with good health and functions (successful ageing) and aging with disease and disability (unsuccessful ageing) depends on a combination of “positive features”, including genetic, epigenetic and phenotypic characteristics in combination with favourable environment, economic status and social involvement. In our study, we summarize some key points for the identification of a longevity signature, with a particular focus on long-living Sicilian individuals and centenarians. Analysing three different Sicilian cohorts (young, people with no centenarian parents and long-living individuals (LLI) aged >90) we found APOE e3e3 in our LLIs and no presence of e4. Regarding FOXO rs2802292 G-allele (G>T) we did not observe an association with longevity, probably because of the small sample of centenarians studied. Regarding haematological and anthropometric results, it is still difficult to point specific longevity features and so far, we cannot specify a single one. On the other hand, we believe that the synergy among genetics and environment might create successful interaction to achieve and obtain effective longevity.

Abstract: The NUCLEUS experiment aims to perform a high-precision measurement of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEvNS) at the EdF Chooz B nuclear power plant in France. CEvNS is a unique process to study neutrino properties and to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. The study of CEvNS is also important for light Dark-Matter searches. It could be a possible irreducible background for high-sensitivity Dark-Matter experiments. NUCLEUS is an experiment under construction based on ultra-low threshold ($\sim$20 eV$_{nr}$) cryogenic calorimeters, operated at tens-of-mK temperatures.

Abstract: Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. The provided data is furthermore publicly available on the workshop’s data repository together with a plotting tool for visualization.

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Currently, no effective early diagnostic biomarkers are available for colorectal carcinoma. Therefore, there is a need to discover new molecules able to identify pre-cancerous lesions. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been associated with the onset of specific pathologies, thus the identification of miRNAs associated to colorectal cancer may be used to detect this pathology at early stages. On these bases, the expression levels of miRNAs were analyzed to compare the miRNAs expression levels of colorectal cancer samples and normal tissues in several miRNA datasets. This analysis revealed a group of 19 differentially expressed miRNAs. To establish the interaction between miRNAs and the most altered genes in CRC, the mirDIP gene target analysis was performed in such group of 19 differentially expressed miRNAs. To recognize miRNAs able to activate or inhibit genes and pathways involved in colorectal cancer development DIANA-mirPath prediction analysis was applied. Overall, these analyses showed that the up-regulated hsa-miR-183-5p and hsa-miR-21-5p, and the down-regulated hsa-miR-195-5p and hsa-miR-497-5p were directly related to colorectal cancer through the interaction with the Mismatch Repair pathway and Wnt, RAS, MAPK, PI3K, TGF-β and p53 signaling pathways involved in cancer development.
