Abstract

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, $\bar{p}$, $e^{\pm}$, and nuclei (H-Si, Fe), which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. The most recent AMS-02 result is the measurement of the spectra of CR sodium and aluminum up to $\sim$2 TV. Given their low solar system abundances, a significant fraction of each element is produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. In this paper, we use precise measurements of the sodium and aluminum spectra by AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data to test their origin. We show that the sodium spectrum agrees well with the predictions made with the GalProp-HelMod framework, while aluminum spectrum shows a significant excess in the rigidity range from 2-7 GV. In this context, we discuss the origin of other low-energy excesses in Li, F, and Fe found earlier. The observed excesses in Li, F, and Al appear to be consistent with the local Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars hypothesis, invoked to reproduce anomalous $^{22}$Ne/$^{20}$Ne, $^{12}$C/$^{16}$O, and $^{58}$Fe/$^{56}$Fe ratios in CRs, while excess in Fe is likely connected with a past SN activity in the solar neighborhood. We also provide updated local interstellar spectra (LIS) of sodium and aluminum in the rigidity range from few MV to $\sim$2 TV. Abstract

The most recent AMS-02 result is the measurement of the spectrum of CR fluorine up to $\sim$2 TV. Given its very low solar system abundance, fluorine in CRs is thought to be mostly secondary, produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. Similar to the best-measured secondary-to-primary boron to carbon nuclei ratio that is widely used to study the origin and propagation of CR species, the precise fluorine data would allow the origin of Si-group nuclei to be studied independently. Meanwhile, the secondary origin of CR fluorine has never been tested in a wide energy range due to the lack of accurate CR data. In this paper, we use the first ever precise measurements of the fluorine spectrum by AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data to actually test this paradigm. Our detailed modeling shows an excess below 10 GV in the fluorine spectrum that may hint at a primary fluorine component. We also provide an updated local interstellar spectrum (LIS) of fluorine in the rigidity range from few MV to $\sim$2 TV. Abstract

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer - 02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, $\bar{p}$, $e^{\pm}$, and nuclei, $_1$H-$_8$O, $_{10}$Ne, $_{12}$Mg, $_{14}$Si, which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. One of the latest long awaited surprises is the spectrum of $_{26}$Fe just published by AMS-02. Because of the large fragmentation cross section and large ionization energy losses, most of CR iron at low energies is local, and may harbor some features associated with relatively recent supernova (SN) activity in the solar neighborhood. Our analysis of new iron spectrum together with Voyager 1 and ACE-CRIS data reveals an unexpected bump in the iron spectrum and in the Fe/He, Fe/O, and Fe/Si ratios at 1-2 GV, while a similar feature in the spectra of He, O, Si, and in their ratios is absent, hinting at a local source of low-energy CRs. The found excess fits well with recent discoveries of radioactive $^{60}$Fe deposits in terrestrial and lunar samples, and in CRs. We provide an updated local interstellar spectrum (LIS) of iron in the energy range from 1 MeV nucleon$^{-1}$ to $\sim$10 TeV nucleon$^{-1}$. Abstract

Composition and spectra of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) are vital for studies of high-energy processes in a variety of environments and on different scales, for interpretation of gamma-ray and microwave observations, disentangling possible signatures of new phenomena, and for understanding of our local Galactic neighborhood. Since its launch, AMS-02 has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of antiprotons, electrons, positrons, and nuclei: H-O, Ne, Mg, Si. These measurements resulted in a number of breakthroughs, however, spectra of heavier nuclei and especially low-abundance nuclei are not expected until later in the mission. Meanwhile, a comparison of published AMS-02 results with earlier data from HEAO-3-C2 indicate that HEAO-3-C2 data may be affected by undocumented systematic errors. Utilizing such data to compensate for the lack of AMS-02 measurements could result in significant errors. In this paper we show that a fraction of HEAO-3-C2 data match available AMS-02 measurements quite well and can be used together with Voyager 1 and ACE-CRIS data to make predictions for the local interstellar spectra (LIS) of nuclei that are not yet released by AMS-02. We are also updating our already published LIS to provide a complete set from H-Ni in the energy range from 1 MeV/nucleon to ~100-500 TeV/nucleon thus covering 8-9 orders of magnitude in energy. Local interstellar spectra (LIS) of secondary cosmic ray (CR) nuclei, lithium, beryllium, boron, and partially secondary nitrogen, are derived in the rigidity range from 10 MV to ~200 TV using the most recent experimental results combined with the state-of-the-art models for CR propagation in the Galaxy and in the heliosphere. The lithium spectrum appears somewhat flatter at high energies compared to other secondary species that may imply a primary lithium component. Two propagation packages, GALPROP and HelMod, are combined to provide a single framework that is run to reproduce direct measurements of CR species at different modulation levels, and at both polarities of the solar magnetic field. An iterative maximum-likelihood method is developed that uses GALPROP-predicted LIS as input to HelMod, which provides the modulated spectra for specific time periods of the selected experiments for the model-data comparison. The proposed LIS accommodate the low-energy interstellar spectra measured by Voyager 1, HEAO-3, and ACE/CRIS as well as the high-energy observations by PAMELA, AMS-02, and earlier experiments that are made deep in the heliosphere. Abstract

A measurement of the dipole anisotropy in galactic coordinates for different charged cosmic rays has been performed with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Results are presented for the first 7.5 years of data taking for protons, Helium, Carbon and Oxygen, and 6.5 years for positrons and electrons. All the species are found to be consistent with isotropy and upper limits to the dipole amplitude have been computed. In particular, for energies above 16 GeV a limit of delta < 1.9% and delta < 0.5% at the 95% C.I. is found for positrons and electrons respectively. Two propagation packages, GALPROP and HelMod, are combined to provide a single framework that is run to reproduce direct measurements of CR species at different modulation levels, and at both polarities of the solar magnetic field. An iterative maximum-likelihood method is developed that uses GALPROP-predicted LIS as input to HelMod, which provides the modulated spectra for specific time periods of the selected experiments for model-data comparison. The optimized HelMod parameters are then used to adjust GALPROP parameters to predict a refined LIS with the procedure repeated subject to a convergence criterion. The parameter optimization uses an extensive data set of proton spectra from 1997-2015. The proposed CR electron LIS accommodates both the low-energy interstellar spectra measured by Voyager 1 as well as the high-energy observations by PAMELA and AMS-02 that are made deep in the heliosphere; it also accounts for Ulysses counting rate features measured out of the ecliptic plane. Two propagation packages, GALPROP and HelMod, are combined to provide a single framework that is run to reproduce direct measurements of cosmic ray (CR) species at different modulation levels and at both polarities of the solar magnetic field. To do so in a self-consistent way, an iterative procedure was developed, where the GALPROP LIS output is fed into HelMod that provides modulated spectra for specific time periods of selected experiments to compare with the data; the HelMod parameters optimization is performed at this stage and looped back to adjust the LIS using the new GALPROP run. The parameters were tuned with the maximum likelihood procedure using an extensive data set of proton spectra from 1997-2015. The proposed LIS accommodate both the low energy interstellar CR spectra measured by Voyager 1 and the high energy observations by BESS, Pamela, AMS-01, and AMS-02 made from the balloons and near-Earth payloads; it also accounts for Ulysses counting rate features measured out of the ecliptic plane. Abstract

The heliospheric modulation model \helmod{} is a two dimensional treatment dealing with the helio-colatitude and radial distance from Sun and is employed to solve the transport-equation for the GCR propagation through the heliosphere down to Earth. This work presents the current version 3 of the \helmod{} model and reviews how main processes involved in GCR propagation were implemented.~The treatment includes the so-called particle drift effects --~e.g., those resulting, for instance, from the extension of the neutral current sheet inside the heliosphere and from the curvature and gradient of the IMF --, which affect the transport of particles entering the solar cavity as a function of their charge sign.~The \helmod{} model is capable to provide modulated spectra which well agree within the experimental errors with those measured by AMS-01, BESS, PAMELA and AMS-02 during the solar cycles 23 and 24.~Furthermore, the counting rate measured by Ulysses at +/- 80degree of solar latitude and 1 to 5\,AU was also found in agreement with that expected by \helmod{} code version 3.

Abstract

Propagation of cosmic rays (CRs) from their sources to the observer is described mainly as plain diffusion at high energies, while at lower energies there are other physical processes involved, both in the interstellar space and in the heliosphere. The latter was a subject of considerable uncertainty until recently. New data obtained by several CR missions can be used to and the local interstellar spectra (LIS) of CR species that would significantly reduce the uncertainties associated with the heliospheric propagation. In this paper we present the LIS of CR protons and helium outside the heliospheric boundary. The proposed LIS are tuned to accommodate both, the low energy CR spectra measured by Voyager 1, and the high energy observations publicly released by BESS, Pamela, AMS-01 and AMS-02. The proton and helium LIS are derived by combining CR propagation in the Galaxy, as described by GALPROP, with the heliospheric modulation computed using the HelMod Monte Carlo Tool. 15. Search for Cosmic Ray Anisotropy with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station

Abstract

The search for cosmic ray anisotropy has been performed using particles collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer after the first five years of operation. The positron to electron ratio is consistent with isotropy at all energies and angular scales. The limit on the dipole anisotropy at the 95% confidence level for energies above 16GeV is $\delta<0.020$ for positrons and $\delta<0.006$ for electrons. In the case of high rigidity protons the upper limit in the rigidity range from 80 to 1800GV is $\delta<0.003$. Abstract

HelMod is a code evaluating the transport of Galactic cosmic rays through the inner heliosphere down to Earth. It is based on a 2-D Monte Carlo approach and includes a general description of the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the diffusion tensor, thus, properly treating the particle drift effects. The model has been tuned in order to fit the data observed outside the ecliptic plane at several distances from the Earth and the spectra observed near the Earth for both, high and low solar activity levels. Abstract

The cosmic rays modulation inside the heliosphere is well described by a transport equation introduced by Parker in 1965. To solve this equation several approaches were followed in the past. Recently the Monte Carlo approach becomes widely used in force of his advantages with respect to other numerical methods. In the Monte Carlo approach, the transport equation is associated to a fully equivalent set of Stochastic Differential Equations. This set is used to describe the stochastic path of a quasi-particle from a source, e.g., the interstellar medium, to a specific target, e.g., a detector at Earth. In this work, we present both the Forward-in-Time and Backward-in-Time Monte Carlo solutions. 18. Towards a Semi-Analytical Model of the Long-Term Variations of the Heliospheric Structures

Abstract

When developing a model to accurately predict the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays, it is crucial to consider the global characteristics of the heliosphere. The dynamics and variability of the boundaries of the heliosphere have a significant impact on the long-term variation of cosmic rays, even at Earth's location. Therefore, it is highly desirable to have a global, time-dependent, and user-friendly heliospheric structure modelization. With this aim, we developed a semi-analytical, data-driven model that uses a simplified approach for solving the solar wind dynamics through the heliosphere, including the effect of the pick-up ions on the termination shock. The model also uses measurements of the energetic neutral atoms' spectra at 1AU to determine the distance of the heliopause. The model's predictions have been compared with the observations of the Voyager probes.

Abstract

The Cosmic Rays propagation was studied in details using the HelMod-2D Monte Carlo code, that includes a general description of the diffusion tensor, and polar magnetic-field. The Numerical Approach used in this work is based on a set of Stochastic Differential Equations fully equivalent to the well know Parker Equation for the transport of Cosmic Rays. In our approach the Diffusion tensor in the frame of the magnetic field turbolence does not depends explicitly by Solar Latitude but varies with time using a diffusion parameter obtained by Neutron Monitors. The parameters of the Model were tuned using data during the solar Cycle 23 and Ulysses latitudinal Fast Scan in 1995. The actual parametrization is able to well reproduce the observed latitudinal gradient of protons and the southward shift of the minimum of latitudinal intensity. The description of the model is also available online at website www.helmod.org. The model was then applied on Pamela/Ulysses proton intensity from 2006 up to 2009. The model during this 4-year continous period agree well with both PAMELA (at 1 AU) and Ulysses data (at various solar distance and solar latitude). The agreement improves when considering the ratio between this data. Studies done also with particles with different charge (e.g. electrons) allow us to explain the presence (or not) of protons and electrons latitudinal gradients observed by Ulysses during the Latitudinal Fast Scan in 1995 and 2007.

Abstract

We implemented a website to deal with main effects on Cosmic Ray access to the Earth, i.e. the Solar Modulation and the Geomagnetic Field effect. In helmod.org the end user can easily access a web interface to results catalog of the HelMod Monte Carlo Code. This Model uses a Monte Carlo Approach to solves the Parker Transport Equation, obtaining a modulated proton flux for a period (monthly average) between January 1990 and december 2007. geomagsphere.org is instead based on GeoMag Backtracing Code, that solves the Lorentz equation with a Runge-Kutta method of 6th order, and, reversing charge sign and velocity, reconstruct particle trajectories in the Earth Magnetosphere back in time. We use last models of internal (IGRF-11) and external (Tsyganenko 1996 -T96- and 2005 -T05-) field components valid up to 2015. Particles are backtraced to the outer (magnetopause) or inner boundary to separate Primary (allowed trajectory) from Secondary (forbidden) Cosmic Rays. This code has been used both for reproducing known effects as East-West effect and rigidity cutoff calculations. In geomagsphere.org the user can choose the external field model from Tsyganenko (T96 or T05) and obtain for a fixed position and date from 1st Jan. 1968 (T96) and 1st Jan. 1995 (T05) respectively till 31$^{st}$ Dec 2012, the vertical rigidity cutoff estimation obtained with the backtracing technique with a rigidity step of 0.1 GV. Abstract

We used a backtracing code to reconstruct particle trajectory inside the Earth Magnetosphere during the last solar active period (2011 and 2012) when very high Solar Wind pressure values were measured. We compared our results on AMS-02 proton and electron data with 2 different External Field models, namely Tsyganenko 1996 (T96) and 2005 (T05), both for quiet (defined as the periods when the solar wind pressure is below the average value, set at 2nPa) and active periods. Although T05 has been specifically designed for storm events, at high energy the particle trajectory is similar for the two models. For instance at rigidities larger than 50 GV, the RMS of angular difference between reconstructed asymptotic direction outside the Magnetosphere is of the order of the millirad, while it increases at intermediate energies. We also confirmed, as a function of the pointing direction, the well known East-West effect on the trajectory of primary particles and on the access solid angle on the AMS detector.

26. Dynamical Dark Energy model parameters with or without massive neutrinos

Abstract

We use WMAP5 and other cosmological data to constrain model parameters in quintessence cosmologies, focusing also on their shift when we allow for non-vanishing neutrino masses. The Ratra-Peebles (RP) and SUGRA potentials are used here, as examples of slowly or fastly varying state parameter w(a). Both potentials depend on an energy scale \Lambda. Here we confirm the results of previous analysis with WMAP3 data on the upper limits on \Lambda, which turn out to be rather small (down to ~10^{-9} in RP cosmologies and ~10^{-5} for SUGRA). Our constraints on \Lambda are not heavily affected by the inclusion of neutrino mass as a free parameter. Abstract

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. Some of the most recent AMS-02 results are the measurements of the spectra of CR fluorine, sodium and aluminum up to 2 TV. Given their low solar system abundances, a significant fraction of each element is produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. Using AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data, our calculations within the GALPROP–HELMOD framework provided updated local interstellar spectra (LIS) for these species, in the rigidity range from few MV to few TV. While the sodium spectrum agrees well with the predictions, fluorine and aluminum LIS show excesses below 10 GV, hinting at primary components. In this context, the origin of other previously found excesses in Li and Fe is discussed. The observed excesses in Li, F, and Al appear to be consistent with the local Wolf-Rayet stars hypothesis, invoked to reproduce anomalous 22Ne/20Ne, 12C/16O, and 58Fe/56Fe ratios in CRs, while excess in Fe is likely connected with a past supernovae activity in the solar neighborhood.

Abstract

The recently published Interstellar Probe (ISP) study report describes a pragmatic mission concept with a launch window that starts in 2036 and is expected to reach several hundreds of astronomical units past the heliopause within a time frame of ≥50 years (https://interstellarprobe.jhuapl.edu/Interstellar-Probe-MCR.pdf). Following the ISP report, this paper, that will also be accessible from the Bulletin of the AAS (BAAS) in the framework of the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024–2033 (Dialynas et al., A future Interstellar Probe on the dynamic heliosphere and its interaction with the very local interstellar medium: In-situ particle and fields measurements and remotely sensed ENAs, 2022a), aims to highlight the importance of studying the physics of the interactions pertaining to the expanding solar wind that meets the plasma, gas and dust flows of the very local interstellar medium, forming the complex and vast region of our astrosphere. We focus on three fundamental open science questions that reveal the dynamical nature of the heliosphere A) Where are the heliosphere boundaries and how thick is the heliosheath B) Is there a “missing” pressure component towards exploring the dynamics of the global heliosheath and its interaction with the very local interstellar medium C) Why does the shape and size of the global heliosphere appear different in different Energetic Neutral Atom energies? We argue that these questions can only be addressed by exploiting a combination of in-situ charged particle, plasma waves and fields measurements with remotely sensed Energetic Neutral Atoms that can be measured simultaneously from the instruments of a future Interstellar Probe mission, along its trajectory from interplanetary space through the heliosheath and out to the very local interstellar medium.

Abstract

We report the properties of primary cosmic-ray sulfur (S) in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.38×106 sulfur nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS). We observed that above 90 GV the rigidity dependence of the S flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of Ne-Mg-Si fluxes, which is different from the rigidity dependence of the He-C-O-Fe fluxes. We found that, similar to N, Na, and Al cosmic rays, over the entire rigidity range, the traditional primary cosmic rays S, Ne, Mg, and C all have sizeable secondary components, and the S, Ne, and Mg fluxes are well described by the weighted sum of the primary silicon flux and the secondary fluorine flux, and the C flux is well described by the weighted sum of the primary oxygen flux and the secondary boron flux. The primary and secondary contributions of the traditional primary cosmic-ray fluxes of C, Ne, Mg, and S (even Z elements) are distinctly different from the primary and secondary contributions of the N, Na, and Al (odd Z elements) fluxes. The abundance ratio at the source for S/Si is 0.167±0.006, for Ne/Si is 0.833±0.025, for Mg/Si is 0.994±0.029, and for C/O is 0.836±0.025. These values are determined independent of cosmic-ray propagation.

Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project was created in 2018 within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) to offer a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the institute. OCRA now counts 22 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project offers activities both for students and teachers. The one activity common to all local groups is the participation in the yearly International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. For both teachers and students, the OCRA website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, offers a series of online laboratories designed both to be used by students individually but also to be offered in the classroom by teachers. A section dedicated to teachers provides ample material to help bring these laboratories to the classroom. The online materials were presented in a course for teachers in spring 2021. In addition to the national efforts, there are also local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and secondments, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. This article provides an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2022 science camp.

Abstract

We consider cosmological models with dynamical dark energy (dDE) coupled to cold dark matter (CDM), while simultaneously allowing neutrinos to be massive. Using a MCMC approach, we compare these models with a wide range of cosmological data sets. We find a strong correlation between this coupling strength and the neutrino mass. This correlation persists when BAO data are included in the analysis. We add then priors on $\nu$ mass from particle experiments. The claimed detection of $\nu$ mass from the Heidelberg-Moscow neutrinoless double--$\beta$ decay experiment would imply a 7--$8 \sigma$ detection of CDM-DE coupling. Similarly, the detection of $\nu$ mass from coming KATRIN tritium $\beta$ decay experiment will imply a safe detection of a coupling in the dark sector. Previous attempts to accommodate cosmic phenomenology with such possible $\nu$ mass data made recourse to a $w < -1$ eoS. Abstract

Within the frame of cosmologies where Dark Energy (DE) is a self--interacting scalar field, we allow for a CDM--DE coupling and non--zero neutrino masses, simultaneously. In their 0--0 version, i.e. in the absence of coupling and neutrino mass, these cosmologies provide an excellent fit to WMAP, SNIa and deep galaxy sample spectra, at least as good as \LambdaCDM. When the new degrees of freedom are open, we find that CDM--DE coupling and significant neutrino masses (~0.1eV per \nu species) are at least as likely as the 0--0 option and, in some cases, even statistically favoured. Cosmological limits on neutrino masses are softened, by more than a factor 2, if Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Dark Energy (DE) are coupled. In turn, a neutrino mass yielding $\Omega_\nu$ up to $\sim0.20$ allows coupling levels $\beta \simeq 0.15, $ or more, already easing the coincidence problem. Abstract

Upcoming Weak Lensing (WL) surveys can be used to constrain Dark Energy (DE) properties, namely if tomographic techniques are used to improve their sensitivity. In this work, we use a Fisher matrix technique to compare the power of CMB anisotropy and polarization data with tomographic WL data, in constraining DE parameters. Adding WL data to available CMB data improves the detection of all cosmological parameters, but the impact is really strong when DE--DM coupling is considered, as WL tomography can then succeed to reduce the errors on some parameters by factors >10., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures; version to appear in JCAP

Abstract

The recently published Interstellar Probe (ISP) study report describes a pragmatic mission concept with a launch window that starts in 2036 and is expected to reach several hundreds of astronomical units past the heliopause within a time frame of ≥50 years (https://interstellarprobe.jhuapl.edu/Interstellar-Probe-MCR.pdf). Following the ISP report, this paper, that will also be accessible from the Bulletin of the AAS (BAAS) in the framework of the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024–2033 (Dialynas et al., A future Interstellar Probe on the dynamic heliosphere and its interaction with the very local interstellar medium: In-situ particle and fields measurements and remotely sensed ENAs, 2022a), aims to highlight the importance of studying the physics of the interactions pertaining to the expanding solar wind that meets the plasma, gas and dust flows of the very local interstellar medium, forming the complex and vast region of our astrosphere. We focus on three fundamental open science questions that reveal the dynamical nature of the heliosphere A) Where are the heliosphere boundaries and how thick is the heliosheath B) Is there a “missing” pressure component towards exploring the dynamics of the global heliosheath and its interaction with the very local interstellar medium C) Why does the shape and size of the global heliosphere appear different in different Energetic Neutral Atom energies? Abstract

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic electron fluxes in the rigidity interval from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 2.0×108 electrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The electron fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. Recurrent electron flux variations with periods of 27 days, 13.5 days, and 9 days are observed. We find that the electron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the proton fluxes. Remarkably, a hysteresis between the electron flux and the proton flux is observed with a significance of greater than 6σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. Furthermore, significant structures in the electron-proton hysteresis are observed corresponding to sharp structures in both fluxes. This continuous daily electron data provide unique input to the understanding of the charge sign dependence of cosmic rays over an 11-year solar cycle.

Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project was created in 2018 within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) to offer a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the institute. OCRA now counts 22 of the institute’s divisions all over Italy as members. The project offers activities both for students and teachers. The one activity common to all local groups is the participation in the yearly International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. For both teachers and students, the OCRA website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, offers a series of online laboratories designed both to be used by students individually but also to be offered in the classroom by teachers. A section dedicated to teachers provides ample material to help bring these laboratories to the classroom. The online materials were presented in a course for teachers in spring 2021. In addition to the national efforts, there are also local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and secondments, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. This article provides an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2022 science camp.

Abstract

We report the properties of primary cosmic-ray sulfur (S) in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.38 × 106 sulfur nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS). We observed that above 90 GV the rigidity dependence of the S flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of Ne-Mg-Si fluxes, which is different from the rigidity dependence of the He-C-O-Fe fluxes. We found that, similar to N, Na, and Al cosmic rays, over the entire rigidity range, the traditional primary cosmic rays S, Ne, Mg, and C all have sizeable secondary components, and the S, Ne, and Mg fluxes are well described by the weighted sum of the primary silicon flux and the secondary fluorine flux, and the C flux is well described by the weighted sum of the primary oxygen flux and the secondary boron flux. The primary and secondary contributions of the traditional primary cosmic-ray fluxes of C, Ne, Mg, and S (even Z elements) are distinctly different from the primary and secondary contributions of the N, Na, and Al (odd Z elements) fluxes. The abundance ratio at the source for S/Si is 0.167±0.006, for Ne/Si is 0.833±0.025, for Mg/Si is 0.994±0.029, and for C/O is 0.836±0.025. These values are determined independent of cosmic-ray propagation.

Abstract

In June 2019 from the region of Calabria (Italy) our group launched the Stratospheric Balloon MoCRiS (Measurement of Cosmic Ray in Stratosphere) that reached up to 35111 meters. MoCRiS is a didactical project that uses a Light Balloon with a payload of only 2.1 Kg payload box included. The capsule was Lithium-ion batteries operated and fully instrumented with two Hi-Res Camera, one for picture and one for video, GPS Tracker, two Particle detectors, and sensors for temperature and pressure. Two ArduSiPM [6] scintillation detectors, made by the INFN group in Rome, were used as cosmic ray flux meters. The technology used for these types of devices makes them very economical, light (<150 g), and with low power consumption (<1 Watt). These characteristics are optimal for use with the balloon and in space (e.g. in CubeSat), and very attractive for educational use, even on the ground. During the school year, the students of the scientific high school "Stefano Patrizi" of Cariati (CS) Italy, participated in the definition of the project following theoretical and practical lessons on aerospace techniques and particle physics with regard to cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere. The mission was completely successful by experimentally verifying the pressure-to-height relation, the height of the thermal inversion in the atmosphere, reaching and exceeding the maximum Regener-Pfotzer level of the shower development. The instrumental and didactic platform created is easily replicable even with further upgrades. We are expanding the collaboration with other schools for further launches.

Abstract

We report the properties of aluminum (Al) nuclei in cosmic rays measured in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.51 million nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We observed that above 6 GV the Al spectrum is well described by the weighted sum of the silicon spectrum (primary cosmic rays) and the fluorine spectrum (secondary cosmic rays). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity and becomes dominant at highest rigidities. Al/Si abundance ratio at the source is determined independent of cosmic ray propagation.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment operating continuously aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since the 19th of May of 2011. A component of trapped Z>2 ions located in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) has been detected traversing the instrument both in down-going and up-going directions.

Abstract

OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities was born in 2018 as a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a national framework, the numerous public engagement activities in the field of cosmic ray physics already present at a local level in the divisions and laboratories. Since spring 2020 OCRA offers also a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be offered in the classroom by teachers. The cosmic ray path, present on the website, will be presented together with the online laboratories on the measurement of muons, from the one related to the dependence on the zenith angle made during the International Cosmic Day up to measurements of the flux dependency on the altitude in the atmosphere and in the water. Also, a laboratory allowing to analyze public data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented. In addition, some teaching methods included in the "Teachers' area" of the OCRA website will be described. The developed cosmic ray path was also used to organize an online course for teachers of Italian high schools with the purpose of accompanying teachers when approaching the subject for the first time. Abstract

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. Some of the most recent AMS-02 results are the measurements of the spectra of CR fluorine, sodium and aluminum up to 2 TV. Given their low solar system abundances, a significant fraction of each element is produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. Using AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data, our calculations within the GALPROP-HELMOD framework provided updated local interstellar spectra (LIS) for these species, in the rigidity range from few MV to few TV. While the sodium spectrum agrees well with the predictions, fluorine and aluminum LIS show excesses below 10 GV, hinting at primary components. In this context, the origin of other previously found excesses in Li and Fe is discussed. The observed excesses in Li, F, and Al appear to be consistent with the local Wolf-Rayet stars hypothesis, invoked to reproduce anomalous 22Ne/20Ne, 12C/16O, and 58Fe/56Fe ratios in CRs, while excess in Fe is likely connected with a past supernovae activity in the solar neighborhood.

Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project offers a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Created in 2018, OCRA now counts 21 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project's core activity is the participation of all its members in the International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, and inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. The national activities are complemented by local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and tutorship programs, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

The outreach program “A scuola di Astroparticelle” was proposed in 2016 by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN - Napoli Division) in collaboration with the Physics Department “Ettore Pancini” of the Federico II University in Napoli, CNR-SPIN and CNR-ISASI Institutes. Its main goal is to engage teachers and students of High Schools in astroparticle physics projects. For the third edition (2018/19), the activities, which are also part of the Italian Educational Program PCTO - “Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e per l'Orientamento”, involved 18 schools for a total of 21 projects on several topics. Some projects were strictly related to astroparticles as cosmic rays, while others were more technical, as the development of particle detectors, or cross-disciplinary projects. Students worked for the entire school year and prepared materials for the final event. More than 600 students attended the event and presented their work to a jury with a poster and an oral presentation in plenary sessions. Since 2018, the program is part of OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities - a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a common framework, the numerous outreach activities in cosmic-ray field carried out at the local level. The fourth edition (2019-20), in spite of the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has also seen the participation of 22 schools that carried out part of the activities in an online format. The project realized using the open data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented in detail.

Abstract

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, p ̄, e ±, and nuclei (H-Si, Fe), which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. The most recent AMS-02 result is the measurement of the spectra of CR sodium and aluminum up to ∼2 TV. Given their low solar system abundances, a significant fraction of each element is produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. In this paper, we use precise measurements of the sodium and aluminum spectra by AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data to test their origin. We show that the sodium spectrum agrees well with the predictions made with the GalProp-HelMod framework, while the aluminum spectrum shows a significant excess in the rigidity range from 2-7 GV. In this context, we discuss the origin of other low-energy excesses in Li, F, and Fe found earlier. The observed excesses in Li, F, and Al appear to be consistent with the local Wolf-Rayet stars hypothesis, invoked to reproduce anomalous 22Ne/20Ne, 12C/16O, and 58Fe/56Fe ratios in CRs, while excess in Fe is likely connected with a past supernova activity in the solar neighborhood. We also provide updated local interstellar spectra (LIS) of sodium and aluminum in the rigidity range from a few megavolts to 7sim;2 TV. Our calculations employ the self-consistent GalProp-HelMod framework, which has proved to be a reliable tool in deriving the LIS of CR p ̄, e -, and nuclei Z ≤ 28.

Given its very low solar system abundance, fluorine in CRs is thought to be mostly secondary, produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. Similar to the best-measured secondary-to-primary boron to carbon nuclei ratio that is widely used to study the origin and propagation of CR species, the precise fluorine data would allow the origin of Si-group nuclei to be studied independently. Meanwhile, the secondary origin of CR fluorine has never been tested in a wide energy range due to the lack of accurate CR data. In this paper, we use the first ever precise measurements of the fluorine spectrum by AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data to actually test this paradigm. Our detailed modeling shows an excess below 10 GV in the fluorine spectrum that may hint at a primary fluorine component. We also provide an updated local interstellar spectrum (LIS) of fluorine in the rigidity range from a few MV to ∼2 TV. Our calculations employ the self-consistent GalProp-HelMod framework that has proved to be a reliable tool in deriving the LIS of CR p ̄ and e-, and nuclei Z ≤ 28.
