Nova explosions are caused by global thermonuclear runaways triggered in the surface layers of accreting white dwarfs 1-3 . It has been predicted 4-6 that localized thermonuclear bursts on white dwarfs can also take place, similar to type-I X-ray bursts observed in accreting neutron stars. Unexplained rapid bursts from the binary system TV Columbae, in which mass is accreted onto a moderately strong magnetized white dwarf from a low-mass companion, have been observed on several occasions in the past 40 years 7-11 . During these bursts, the optical/ultraviolet luminosity increases by a factor of more than  three in less than an hour and fades in around ten hours. Fast outflows have been observed in ultraviolet spectral lines 7 , with velocities of more than 3,500 kilometres per second, comparable to the escape velocity from the white dwarf surface. Here we report on optical bursts observed in TV Columbae and in two additional accreting systems, EI Ursae Majoris and ASASSN-19bh. The bursts have a total energy of approximately 10 -6  times than those of classical nova explosions (micronovae) and bear a strong resemblance to type-I X-ray bursts 12-14 . We exclude accretion or stellar magnetic reconnection events as their origin and suggest thermonuclear runaway events in magnetically confined accretion columns as a viable explanation., (© 2022. Recurring outbursts associated with matter flowing onto compact stellar remnants (such as black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs) in close binary systems provide a way of constraining the poorly understood accretion process. The light curves of these outbursts are shaped by the efficiency of angular-momentum (and thus mass) transport in the accretion disks, which has traditionally been encoded in a viscosity parameter, α. Numerical simulations of the magneto-rotational instability that is believed to be the physical mechanism behind this transport yield values of α of roughly 0.1-0.2, consistent with values determined from observations of accreting white dwarfs. Equivalent viscosity parameters have hitherto not been estimated for disks around neutron stars or black holes. Here we report the results of an analysis of archival X-ray light curves of 21 outbursts in black-hole X-ray binaries. By applying a Bayesian approach to a model of accretion, we determine corresponding values of α of around 0.2-1.0. These high values may be interpreted as an indication either of a very high intrinsic rate of angular-momentum transport in the disk, which could be sustained by the magneto-rotational instability only if a large-scale magnetic field threads the disk, or that mass is being lost from the disk through substantial outflows, which strongly shape the outburst in the black-hole X-ray binary. The lack of correlation between our estimates of α and the accretion state of the binaries implies that such outflows can remove a substantial fraction of the disk mass in all accretion states and therefore suggests that the outflows correspond to magnetically driven disk winds rather than thermally driven ones, which require specific radiative conditions.

The neural cell adhesion molecule L1 (CD171) is a multidomain type 1 membrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily important in the nervous system development, kidney morphogenesis, and maintenance of the immune system. Recent studies reported CD171 expression being associated with adverse clinical outcome in different types of cancer and there has been a growing interest in targeting this cell membrane molecule on neoplastic cells by chimeric antigen receptor redirected T lymphocytes or specific antibodies. Nevertheless, conflicting results regarding the prognostic value of CD171 expression in renal cell carcinomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumors were published. In this study, CD171 expression was immunohistochemically analyzed in 5155 epithelial, mesenchymal, melanocytic, and lymphohematopoietic tumors to assess its utility in diagnostic pathology and to pinpoint potential targets for CD171-targeting therapy. A newly developed anti-CD171 rabbit monoclonal antibody, clone 014, was selected from the panel of commercially available CD171 antibodies. Immunohistochemistry was performed using Leica Bond Max automation and multitumor blocks containing up to 60 tumor samples. CD171 was constitutively and strongly expressed in neuroectodermal tumors such as schwannoma, neuroblastoma, and paraganglioma, whereas other mesenchymal tumors including schwannoma mimics showed only rarely CD171 positivity. Frequent CD171-expression was also detected in ovarian serous carcinoma, malignant mesothelioma, and testicular embryonal carcinoma. CD171 immunohistochemistry may have some role in immunophenotypic differential diagnosis of neurogenic tumors and pinpointing potential candidates for anti-CD171 therapy. Though, because of its rare expression and lack of predictive value, CD171 is neither a diagnostic nor prognostic marker for gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma is a benign, lymph node-based myofibroblastic tumor of unknown pathogenesis. We report the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features of this rare entity. The study cohort consisted of 14 men and 4 women ranging in age from 31 to 65 (mean, 47; median 49) years with tumors arising in inguinal lymph nodes (n=15), a neck lymph node (n=1), and undesignated lymph nodes (n=2). Most individuals presented with a painless mass or lump. Possible trauma/injury to the inguinal region was documented in 4 cases. Tumors ranged in size from 1.0 to 4.2 (mean, 3.1; median; 3.0) cm. Microscopically, the process presented as a well-circumscribed, oftentimes pseudoencapsulated nodule (n=17) or nodules (n=1). Tumors consisted of a cellular proliferation of cytologically bland, spindled cells arranged in short fascicles and whorls within a finely collagenous (n=11) or myxocollagenous (n=7) matrix. In 12 tumors, scattered fibromatosis-like fascicles of spindled cells were noted. Histologic features characteristic of the process included nuclear palisades (n=16 cases), collagenous bodies (n=15), and perinuclear intracytoplasmic hyaline globules (n=10). Mitotic activity ranged from 0 to 8 (mean, 2; median, 1) mitotic figures/50 high-powered fields with no atypical division figures identified. Immunohistochemically, all tumors tested expressed smooth muscle actin and/or muscle-specific actin (n=5, each), and nuclear β-catenin and cyclin D1 (n=8, each). The latter 2 results prompted a screening for mutations in the β-catenin gene glycogen synthase kinase-3 β phosphorylation mutational "hotspot" region in exon 3 using polymerase chain reaction amplification and Sanger sequencing. Single nucleotide substitutions leading to missense mutations at the protein level were identified in 7 of 8 (88%) analyzed tumors and are responsible for the abnormal expression of β-catenin and cyclin D1. These results demonstrate that mutational activation of the β-catenin gene is likely a pivotal event in the pathogenesis of intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma.

Quantum entanglement of Hawking radiation has been supposed to give rise to a Planck density "firewall" near the event horizon of old black holes. We show that Planck density firewalls are excluded by Einstein's equations for black holes of mass exceeding the Planck mass. We find an upper limit of 1/(8πM) to the surface density of a firewall in a Schwarzschild black hole of mass M, translating for astrophysical black holes into a firewall density smaller than the Planck density by more than 30 orders of magnitude. A strict upper limit on the firewall density is given by the Planck density times the ratio M(Pl)/(8πM).
