Single crystals of SrMn2P2 and CaMn2P2 were grown using Sn flux and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity Cp, and magnetic susceptibility chi = M/H measurements versus temperature T and magnetization M versus applied magnetic field H isotherm measurements. The x-ray diffraction results show that both compounds adopt the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure. The rho(T) measurements demonstrate insulating ground states for both compounds. The chi(T) and Cp(T) data reveal a weak first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Neel temperature TN = 53(1) K for SrMn2P2 and a strong first-order AFM transition at TN = 69.8(3) K for CaMn2P2. Both compounds show an isotropic and nearly T-independent chi(T < TN). {31}P NMR measurements confirm the strong first-order transition in CaMn2P2 but show critical slowing down near TN for SrMn2P2 thus evidencing second-order character. The NMR measurements also indicate that the AFM structure of CaMn2P2 is commensurate with the lattice whereas that of SrMn2P2 is incommensurate. These first-order AFM transitions are unique among the class of trigonal (Ca, Sr, Ba)Mn2(P, As, Sb, Bi)2 compounds which otherwise exhibit second-order AFM transitions. This result presents a challenge to understand the systematics of magnetic ordering in this class of materials in which magnetically-frustrated antiferromagnetism is quasi-two-dimensional., Comment: 16 pages, 18 captioned figures, 62 references

Filled skutterudite compound EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ shows the highest magnetic ordering temperature of $T_{\rm C}$ = 154 K among Eu-based skutterudite compounds, but its magnetic ground state has not been determined yet. Here, we performed $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to reveal its magnetic ground state as well as the physical properties from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature and magnetic field dependence of $^{153}$Eu NMR spectrum in the magnetically ordered state, we found that the Eu ions are in Eu$^{2+}$ state with a nearly 7 $\mu_{\rm B}$ corresponding to $S$ = 7/2 spins. Combined with the magnetization measurements which show the reduced saturation moments of 4.5 $\mu_{\rm B}$/f.u., we determined the ground magnetic structure in EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to be ferrimagnetic where the Eu$^{2+}$ 4$f$ and the Fe 3$d$ ordered moments are ferromagnetically aligned in each sublattice but the moments between the sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned. We also found the local distortion at the Eu site from the cubic symmetry in the magnetically ordered state. The relationship between the rattling motion of Eu atoms and the local symmetry of the Eu ions is discussed. From the $^{75}$As NQR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as well as $^{153}$Eu NMR measurements, we found that the 4$f$ electrons of the Eu ions are well described by the local moment picture in both the magnetic and paramagnetic metallic states., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides dynamic spatial-temporal insight of neural activities in the cortex. Because the number of possible sources is far greater than the number of MEG detectors, the proposition to localize sources directly from MEG data is notoriously ill-posed. Here we develop an approach based on data processing procedures including clustering, forward and backward filtering, and the method of maximum entropy. We show that taking as a starting point the assumption that the sources lie in the general area of the auditory cortex (an area of about 40 mm by 15 mm), our approach is capable of achieving reasonable success in pinpointing active sources concentrated in an area of a few mm's across, while limiting the spatial distribution and number of false positives., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

In this paper, we present the computational task-management tool Ganga, which allows for the specification, submission, bookkeeping and post-processing of computational tasks on a wide set of distributed resources. Ganga has been developed to solve a problem increasingly common in scientific projects, which is that researchers must regularly switch between different processing systems, each with its own command set, to complete their computational tasks. Ganga provides a homogeneous environment for processing data on heterogeneous resources. We give examples from High Energy Physics, demonstrating how an analysis can be developed on a local system and then transparently moved to a Grid system for processing of all available data. Ganga has an API that can be used via an interactive interface, in scripts, or through a GUI. Specific knowledge about types of tasks or computational resources is provided at run-time through a plugin system, making new developments easy to integrate. The first paper in this series explored the effects of altering the chemical mixture of the stellar population on an element by element basis on stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones to the end of the red giant branch. This paper extends the discussion by incorporating the fully consistent synthetic stellar spectra with those isochrone models in predicting integrated colors, Lick indices, and synthetic spectra. Older populations display element ratio effects in their spectra at higher amplitude than younger populations. In addition, spectral effects in the photospheres of stars tend to dominate over effects from isochrone temperatures and lifetimes, but, further, the isochrone-based effects that are present tend to fall along the age-metallicity degeneracy vector, while the direct stellar spectral effects usually show considerable orthogonality., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. Integrated light from distant galaxies is often compared to stellar population models via the equivalent widths of spectral features--spectral indices--whose strengths rely on the abundances of one or more elements. Such comparisons hinge not only on the overall metal abundance but also on relative abundances. Studies have examined the influence of individual elements on synthetic spectra but little has been done to address similar issues in the stellar evolution models that underlie most stellar population models. Stellar evolution models will primarily be influenced by changes in opacities. In order to explore this issue in detail, twelve sets of stellar evolution tracks and isochrones have been created at constant heavy element mass fraction Z that self-consistently account for varying heavy element mixtures. These sets include scaled-solar, alpha-enhanced, and individual cases where the elements C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Ti, and Fe have been enhanced above their scaled-solar values. Large-scale grid infrastructures for in silico drug discovery open opportunities of particular interest to neglected and emerging diseases. In 2005 and 2006, we have been able to deploy large scale in silico docking within the framework of the WISDOM initiative against Malaria and Avian Flu requiring about 105 years of CPU on the EGEE, Auvergrid and TWGrid infrastructures. These achievements demonstrated the relevance of large-scale grid infrastructures for the virtual screening by molecular docking. A collection of Johnson/Cousins photometry for stars with known [Fe/H] is used to generate color-color relations that include the abundance dependence. Literature temperature and bolometric correction dependences are attached to the color relations. The main result of this work is the tabulation of seven colors and the V-band bolometric correction as a function of Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] for -1.06 < V-K < 10.2 and an accompanying interpolation program. Improvements to the present calibration would involve filling photometry gaps, obtaining more accurate and on-system photometry, knowing better log g and [Fe/H] values, improving the statistics for data-impoverished groups of stars such as K dwarfs, applying small tweaks in the processing pipeline, and obtaining better empirical temperature and bolometric correction relations, especially for supergiants and M stars. The globular cluster (GC) systems of the Milky Way and of our neighboring spiral galaxy, M31, comprise 2 distinct entities, differing in 3 respects. 1. M31 has young GCs, ages from ~100 Myr to 5 Gyr old, as well as old globular clusters. No such young GCs are known in the Milky Way. 2. We confirm that the oldest M31 GCs have much higher nitrogen abundances than do Galactic GCs at equivalent metallicities. 3. Morrison et al. found M31 has a subcomponent of GCs that follow closely the disk rotation curve of M31. Such a GC system in our own Galaxy has yet to be found. These data are interpreted in terms of the hierarchical-clustering-merging (HCM) paradigm for galaxy formation. We infer that M31 has absorbed more of its dwarf systems than has the Milky Way. This inference has 3 implications: 1. All spiral galaxies likely differ in their GC properties, depending on how many companions each galaxy has, and when the parent galaxy absorbs them. The the Milky Way ties down one end of this spectrum, as almost all of its GCs were absorbed 10-12 Gyr ago. 2. It suggests that young GCs are preferentially formed in the dwarf companions of parent galaxies, and then absorbed by the parent galaxy during mergers. 3. Young GCs seen in tidally-interacting galaxies might come from dwarf companions of these galaxies, rather than be made a-new in the tidal interaction. There is no ready explanation for the marked difference in nitrogen abundance for old M31 GCs relative to the oldest Galactic GCs. The predictions made by Li & Burstein regarding the origin of nitrogen abundance in globular clusters are consistent with what is found for the old M31 GCs compared to that for the two 5 Gyr-old M31 GCs., Comment: to be published in ApJ, Oct 2004; 13 pages of text, 2 tables, 7 postscript figures

Using stellar population synthesis techniques, we explore the photometric signatures of white dwarf progenitor dominated galactic halos, in order to constrain the fraction of halo mass that may be locked-up in white dwarf stellar remnants. We first construct a 10^9 M_sun stellar halo using the canonical Salpeter initial stellar mass distribution, and then allow for an additional component of low- and intermediate-mass stars, which ultimately give rise to white dwarf remnants. Microlensing observations towards the Large Magellanic Cloud, coupled with several ground-based proper motion surveys, have led to claims that in excess of 20% of the dynamical mass of the halo (10^12 M_sun) might be found in white dwarfs. Our results indicate that (1) even if only 1% of the dynamical mass of the dark halo today could be attributed to white dwarfs, their main sequence progenitors at high redshift (z ~ 3) would have resulted in halos more than 100 times more luminous than those expected from conventional initial mass functions alone, and (2) any putative halo white dwarf progenitor dominated initial mass function component, regardless of its dynamical importance, would be virtually impossible to detect at the present-day, due to its extremely faint surface brightness., Comment: 4 pages, Refereed contribution to the 5th Galactic Chemodynamics conference held in Swinburne, July 2003. The abundance of the neutron-rich magnesium isotopes observed in metal-poor stars is explained quantitatively with a chemical evolution model of the local Galaxy that considers - for the first time - the metallicity-dependent contribution from intermediate mass stars. Previous models that simulate the variation of Mg isotopic ratios with metallicity in the solar neighbourhood have attributed the production of Mg25 and Mg26 exclusively to hydrostatic burning in massive stars. These models match the data well for [Fe/H]>-1.0 but severely underestimate Mg25/Mg24 and Mg26/Mg24 at lower metallicities. Earlier studies have noted that this discrepancy may indicate a significant role played by intermediate-mass stars. Only recently have detailed calculations of intermediate-mass stellar yields of Mg25 and Mg26 become available with which to test this hypothesis. Textual analysis of typical microbial genomes reveals that they have the statistical characteristics of a DNA sequence of a much shorter length. This peculiar property supports an evolutionary model in which a genome evolves by random mutation but primarily grows by random segmental self-copying. That genomes grew mostly by self-copying is consistent with the observation that repeat sequences in all genomes are widespread and intragenomic and intergenomic homologous genes are preponderance across all life forms. Lattice models, for their coarse-grained nature, are best suited for the study of the ``designability problem'', the phenomenon in which most of the about 16,000 proteins of known structure have their native conformations concentrated in a relatively small number of about 500 topological classes of conformations. Here it is shown that on a lattice the most highly designable simulated protein structures are those that have the largest number of surface-core switchbacks. A combination of physical, mathematical and biological reasons that causes the phenomenon is given. By comparing the most foldable model peptides with protein sequences in the Protein Data Bank, it is shown that whereas different models may yield similar designabilities, predicted foldable peptides will simulate natural proteins only when the model incorporates the correct physics and biology, in this case if the main folding force arises from the differing hydrophobicity of the residues, but does not originate, say, from the steric hindrance effect caused by the differing sizes of the residues., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Excitons in one-dimensional narrow gap semiconductors of anti-crossing quantum Hall edge states are investigated using a bosonization method. The excitonic states are studied by mapping the problem into a non-integrable sine-Gordon type model. We also find that many-body interactions lead to a strong enhancement of the band gap. An empirical Compton up-scattering model is described which reproduces both the fractional amplitude (RMS) vs. energy and the soft time lags in the 830 Hz QPO observed in 4U1608-52 on Mar. 3, 1996. A combination of two coherent variations in the coronal and soft photon temperatures (with their relative contributions determined by enforcing energy conservation) gives rise to the QPO's energy dependent characteristics. All input parameters to the model, save a characteristic plasma size and the fraction of Comptonized photons impinging on the soft photon source, are derived from the time-averaged photon energy spectrum of the same observation. Fits to the fractional RMS and phase lag data for this kilohertz QPO imply that the spatial extent of the plasma is in the range from 4 to 15 km., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We study the Hopf algebra structure and the highest weight representation of a multiparameter version of $U_{q}gl(2)$. The commutation relations as well as other Hopf algebra maps are explicitly given. We show that the multiparameter universal ${\cal R}$ matrix can be constructed directly as a quantum double intertwiner, without using Reshetikhin's transformation. An interesting feature automatically appears in the representation theory: it can be divided into two types, one for generic $q$, the other for $q$ being a root of unity. When applying the representation theory to the multiparameter universal ${\cal R}$ matrix, the so called standard and nonstandard colored solutions $R(\mu,\nu; {\mu}', {\nu}')$ of the Yang-Baxter equation is obtained., Comment: [14]pages, latex, no figures

We derive an expression with four adjustable parameters that reproduces well the 20x20 Miyazawa-Jernigan potential matrix extracted from known protein structures. We study the manganese oxides from the viewpoint of the strongly correlated doped Mott insulator. The magnetic ordering and the charge transport are governed by the orbital degrees of freedom, and their dimensionality is controlled by the anisotropic transfer integrals between the $e_g$ orbitals. As x increases the magnetic structure is predicted to change as $A \to F \to A \to C \to G$ (F: ferromagnet, A: layered antiferromagnet, C: rod-type antiferromagnet, G: usual antiferromagnet), in agreement with experiments. Especially the orbital is aligned as $d_{x^2-y^2}$ in the metallic A state, which explains the quasi 2D transport and no canting of the spin observed experimentally. Next we discuss the ferromagnetic state without the orbital ordering due to the quantum fluctuation. Here the interplay between the electron repulsion U and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interation $E_{LR}$ is studied with a large d model. In addition to this strong correlation, we propose that the dynamical phase separation could explain the specific heat as well as the various anomalous physical properties, e.g., resistivity, photo-emission, etc., Comment: to be published in Materials Science & Engineering B

The resonant Raman scattering of a quantum wire in a strong magnetic field is studied, focused on the effect of long range Coulomb interaction and the spin-charge separation. The energy-momentum dispersions of charge and spin excitation obtained from Raman cross-section show the characteristc cross-over behaviour induced by inter-edge Coulomb interaction. The "SPE" peak near resonance in polarized spectra becomes broad due to the momentum dependence of charge velocity. The point contact tunneling conductance between edges of the spin singlet $\nu=2/3,\hat{K}=(3/3/0)$ quantum Hall states is studied both in the quasiparticle tunneling picture and in the electron tunneling picture. Due to the interplay of Zeeman splitting and the long range Coulomb interaction between edges of opposite chirality novel spin excitations emerge, and their effect is characterized by anomalous exponents of the charge and spin tunneling conductances in various temperature ranges. Depending on the kinds of scatterings at the point contact and the tunneling mechanism the anomalous interaction in spin sector may enhance or suppress the tunneling conductances. Analysis of the geometric properties of a mean-field HP model on a square lattice for protein structure shows that structures with large number of switch backs between surface and core sites are chosen favorably by peptides as unique ground states. Global comparison of model (binary) peptide sequences with concatenated (binary) protein sequences listed in the Protein Data Bank and the Dali Domain Dictionary indicates that the highest correlation occurs between model peptides choosing the favored structures and those portions of protein sequences containing alpha-helices., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The quantum supergroup OSPq(1|2n) is studied systematically. A Haar functional is constructed, and an algebraic version of the Peter - Weyl theory is extended to this quantum supergroup. Quantum homogeneous superspaces and quantum homogeneous supervector bundles are defined following the strategy of Connes' theory. Parabolic induction is developed by employing the quantum homogeneous supervector bundles. The charge and spin correlation functions of partially spin-polarized edge electrons of a quantum Hall bar are studied using effective Hamiltonian and bosonization techniques. In the presence of the Coulomb interaction between the edges with opposite chirality we find a different crossover behavior in spin and charge correlation functions. The crossover of the spin correlation function in the Coulomb dominated regime is characterized by an anomalous exponent, which originates from the finite value of the effective interaction for the spin degree of freedom in the long wavelength limit. The anomalous exponent may be determined by measuring nuclear spin relaxation rates in a narrow quantum Hall bar or in a quantum wire in strong magnetic fields., Comment: 4 pages, Revtex file, no figures. We have investigated chiral edges of a quantum Hall(QH) liquid at filling factor \nu=2. We find that spin and charge separate in the presence of the long-range Coulomb interaction, and the tunneling density of states(DOS) is given by D(\omega)\sim [-1/\ln\omega]^{1/2}. Differential regularization is used to investigate the one-loop quantum corrections to Chern-Simons-Maxwell spinor and scalar electrodynamics. We illustrate the techniques to write the loop amplitudes in coordinate space. The short-distance expansion method is developed to perform the Fourier transformation of the amplitudes into momentum space and the possible renormalization ambiguity in Chern-Simons type gauge theories in terms of differential regularization is discussed. Lickorish's method for constructing topological invariants of 3 - manifolds is generalized to the quantum supergroup setting. An invariant is obtained by applying this method to the Kauffman polynomial arising from the vector representation of Uq(osp(1|2)). A transparent proof is also given showing that this invariant is equivalent to the Uq(osp(1|2)) invariant obtained in an earlier publication., Comment: Plain Latex. We apply differential renormalization method to the study of three-dimensional topologically massive Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons theories. The method is especially suitable for such theories as it avoids the need for dimensional continuation of three-dimensional antisymmetric tensor and the Feynman rules for three-dimensional theories in coordinate space are relatively simple. The calculus involved is still lengthy but not as difficult as other existing methods of calculation. We compute one-loop propagators and vertices and derive the one-loop local effective action for topologically massive Yang-Mills theory. We then consider Chern-Simons field theory as the large mass limit of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory and show that this leads to the famous shift in the parameter $k$. Some useful formulas for the calculus of differential renormalization of three-dimensional field theories are given in an Appendix., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures. In this note we study the electron spectral weight of doped Mott insulators based on the 2D slave boson gauge field theory. The vertex correction with static gauge field is calculated in the second order perturbation theory. There exist strong experimental evidences for the dimensional cross-over from two to three dimensions as \lan compounds are overdoped. In this paper we describe the dimensional cross-over of the layered correlated metal in the gauge theory framework.
