Abstract The sugar and organic acid content significantly impacts the flavor quality of star fruit, and it undergoes dynamic changes during development. However, the metabolic network and molecular mechanisms governing the formation of sugar and organic acid in star fruit remain unclear. In this study, 23 of 743 components were detected by metabonomic analysis. The highest metabolites contents were organic acids and derivatives. The highest sugar content in the fruit was fructose and glucose, followed by sucrose, which proved that A. carambola is a hexose accumulation type fruit. Genome identification preliminarily screened 141 genes related to glucose metabolism and 67 genes related to acid metabolism. A total of 7,881 unigenes were found in transcriptome data, 6,124 differentially expressed genes were screened, with more up-regulated than down-regulated genes. Transcriptome and metabolome association analysis screened seven core candidate genes related to glucose metabolism and 17 core genes highly related to organic acid pathway, and eight differentially expressed sugar and acid genes were selected for qRT-PCR verification. In addition, 29 bHLHs and eight bZIPs transcription factors were predicted in the glucose metabolism pathway, and 23 MYBs, nine C2H2s transcription factors and one GRAS transcription factor was predicted in the acid metabolism pathway, and transcription factors have both positive and negative regulatory effects on sugar and acid structure genes. This study increased our understanding of A. carambola fruit flavor and provided basic information for further exploring the ornamental and edible values of star fruit.

Abstract Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often have impaired immune function, making them more prone to infections that can lead to sepsis. The coexistence of these conditions can result in decreased hemoglobin levels and is associated with a higher mortality rate. To investigate whether the transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs) improves the prognosis of septic patients with concomitant CKD and to explore the indications for red blood cell transfusion. This retrospective cohort study utilizes data from the MIMIC-IV (v2.0) database. The study enrolled 6,604 patients with sepsis and concomitant CKD admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to adjust for confounding factors. Abstract SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 with an additional L455S mutation on spike when compared with its parental variant BA.2.86 has outcompeted all earlier variants to become the dominant circulating variant. Recent studies investigated the immune resistance of SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 but additional factors are speculated to contribute to its global dominance, which remain elusive until today. Here, we find that SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 has a higher infectivity than BA.2.86 in differentiated primary human nasal epithelial cells (hNECs). Mechanistically, we demonstrate that the gained infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 over BA.2.86 associates with increased entry efficiency conferred by L455S and better spike cleavage in hNECs. Structurally, S455 altered the mode of binding of JN.1 spike protein to ACE2 when compared to BA.2.86 spike at ACE2H34, and modified the internal structure of JN.1 spike protein by increasing the number of hydrogen bonds with neighboring residues. These findings indicate that a single mutation (L455S) enhances virus entry in hNECs and increases immune evasiveness, which contribute to the robust transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 JN.1. We further evaluate the in vitro and in vivo virological characteristics between SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.86/JN.1 and EG.5.1/HK.3, and identify key lineage-specific features of the two Omicron sublineages that contribute to our understanding on Omicron antigenicity, transmissibility, and pathogenicity.

Abstract Background Cardiac lipoma, a seldom-encountered benign tumor positioned beneath the endocardium, has the potential to impair electrophysiological functions. Diagnosis is principally based on imaging modalities. The uniqueness of this case lies in the tumor’s extension both internally and externally within the right atrium, rendering it of special interest. From a clinical standpoint, surgical removal is commonly advocated, wherein early intervention is pivotal in improving patients’ long-term prognoses. Case presentation A 35-year-old male was admitted to the hospital for treatment subsequent to the identification of a cardiac mass two days prior. Initial diagnostic assessments, encompassing CT scans and echocardiography, identified a space-occupying lesion within the heart. The patient underwent surgical excision of the cardiac tumor, utilizing mild hypothermic extracorporeal circulation via femoral vessel access. Intraoperative findings revealed adipose-like tissue of a “dumbbell-shaped” configuration situated both within and external to the right atrium, measuring approximately 8 cm*9 cm internally and 7 cm*6 cm externally, with the extracardiac mass being marginally larger. Postoperative pathological analysis confirmed a cardiac lipoma diagnosis. A follow-up echocardiogram conducted three months post-surgery exhibited no notable abnormalities. The patient is under continuous observation to monitor for any recurrence or potential long-term complications. Conclusion In this case report, we detail with precision a rare cardiac pathology manifested by an expansive infiltrative lipoma that pervades the endocardial and epicardial layers of the right atrium. After thorough preoperative diagnostic workup and evaluation, we contend that surgical intervention represents the optimal therapeutic approach for managing such conditions, with the goal of preemptively reducing the likelihood of cardiac compression or intracardiac obstruction.

Background Periprosthetic bone loss is a well‐known phenomenon following total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the choice of drugs for prevention remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the best drug to treat periprosthetic bone loss by comparing changes in bone mineral density (BMD) at different times after THA. Methods A comprehensive search of five databases and two clinical trial registration platforms was undertaken from their inception through to August 31, 2023 to identify eligible randomized controlled trials. A Bayesian network meta‐analysis (NMA) was carried out for calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) and the surface under cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) of the BMD in calcar (Gruen zone 7) at 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months and over. Results Twenty‐nine trials involving 1427 patients and 10 different interventions were included. The results demonstrated that at 6 months, denosumab had the highest ranking (SUCRA = 0.90), followed by alendronate (SUCRA = 0.76), and zoledronate (SUCRA = 0.73). At 12 months, clodronate ranked highest (SUCRA = 0.96), followed by denosumab (SUCRA = 0.84) and teriparatide (SUCRA = 0.82). For interventions with a duration of 24 months and over, denosumab had the highest SUCRA value (SUCRA = 0.96), followed by raloxifene (SUCRA = 0.90) and zoledronate (SUCRA = 0.75). Conclusion Investigating the existing body of evidence revealed that denosumab demonstrates potential as an intervention of superior efficacy at the three specifically examined time points. However, it remains crucial to conduct further research to confirm these findings and determine the most effective treatment strategy.

Abstract Background The global rise in developmental delays underscores the critical need for a thorough understanding and timely interventions during early childhood. Addressing this issue, the Chinese Baby Connectome Project (CBCP)’s behavior branch is dedicated to examining language acquisition, social-emotional development, and environmental factors affecting Chinese children. The research framework is built around three primary objectives: developing a 0–6 Child Development Assessment Toolkit, implementing an Intelligent Coding System, and investigating environmental influence. Methods Utilizing an accelerated longitudinal design, the CBCP aims to enlist a minimum of 1000 typically developing Chinese children aged 0–6. The data collected in this branch constitutes parental questionnaires, behavioral assessments, and observational experiments to capture their developmental milestones and environmental influences holistically. The parental questionnaires will gauge children’s developmental levels in language and social-emotional domains, alongside parental mental well-being, life events, parenting stress, parenting styles, and family relationships. Behavioral assessments will involve neurofunctional developmental evaluations using tools such as the Griffiths Development Scales and Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Additionally, the assessments will encompass measuring children’s executive functions (e.g., Head-Toe-Knee-Shoulder), social cognitive abilities (e.g., theory of mind), and language development (e.g., Early Chinese Vocabulary Test). A series of behavior observation. experiments will be conducted targeting children of different age groups, focusing primarily on aspects such as behavioral inhibition, compliance, self-control, and social-emotional regulation. To achieve the objectives, established international questionnaires will be adapted to suit local contexts and devise customized metrics for evaluating children’s language and social-emotional development; deep learning algorithms will be developed in the observational experiments to enable automated behavioral analysis; and statistical models will be built to factor in various environmental variables to comprehensively outline developmental trajectories and relationships. Discussion This study’s integration of diverse assessments and AI technology will offer a detailed analysis of early childhood development in China, particularly in the realms of language acquisition and social-emotional skills. The development of a comprehensive assessment toolkit and coding system will enhance our ability to understand and support the development of Chinese children, contributing significantly to the field of early childhood development research. Cotton is an important natural fiber crop worldwide which plays a vital role in our daily life. High yield is a constant goal of cotton breeding, and lint percentage (LP) is one of the important components of cotton fiber yield. A stable QTL controlling LP, qLPA01.1, was identified on chromosome A01 from Gossypium hirsutum introgressed lines with G. tomentosum chromosome segments in a previous study. To fine-map qLPA01.1, an F2 population with 986 individuals was established by crossing G. hirsutum cultivar CCRI35 with the chromosome segment substitution line HT_390. A high-resolution genetic map including 47 loci and spanning 56.98 cM was constructed in the QTL region, and qLPA01.1 was ultimately mapped into an interval corresponding to an ~80 kb genome region of chromosome A01 in the reference genome, which contained six annotated genes. Transcriptome data and sequence analysis revealed that S-acyltransferase protein 24 (GoPAT24) might be the target gene of qLPA01.1. This result provides the basis for cotton fiber yield improvement via marker-assisted selection (MAS) and further studies on the mechanism of cotton fiber development.

Objective:. Comparative studies of median sternotomy and partial upper sternotomy in total arch replacement for type A aortic dissection are rare, and the safety and benefits of partial upper sternotomy need further evaluation. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness and prognosis of partial upper sternotomy in total arch replacement among patients with type A aortic dissection. Methods:. This is a retrospective study of patients who underwent total arch replacement for type A aortic dissection at the First Medical Center of Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital between January 2016 and December 2019. They were grouped into the median sternotomy and partial upper sternotomy groups according to the different treatment methodologies. The intra-operative and prognostic indicators were compared between both groups. Results:. Forty-nine patients were included: 31 in the median sternotomy group and 18 in the partial upper sternotomy group. The partial upper sternotomy group had a shorter incision ((9.0 ± 0.8) cm vs. (25.5 ± 1.3) cm, P = 0.02) and smaller postoperative total drainage volume (885 mL vs. 1,820 mL, P = 0.03) than the median sternotomy group. The differences between the 2 groups with respect to other intra-operative indicators such as operation duration, cardiopulmonary bypass duration, aortic occlusion duration, hypothermic circulatory arrest duration, and intra-operative blood loss, and prognostic indicators such as red blood cell infusion, ventilator aid duration, cardiac intensive care unit stay, postoperative hospital stay, and postoperative complications were not significantly different (all P > 0.05). Conclusions:. The utilization of partial upper sternotomy in patients with type A aortic dissection resulted in a smaller incision and more aesthetically pleasing scar, along with reduced drainage volume compared to median sternotomy.

Abstract The non-Hermitian skin effect and nonreciprocal behavior are sensitive to the boundary conditions, which are unique features of non-Hermitian systems. In such systems, eigenenergies can become complex, and all eigenstates tend to localize at the boundary, a phenomenon that contrasts with Hermitian topologies. In this work, we theoretically study the dynamic behavior of the propagation of Gaussian wavepackets inside a non-Hermitian lattice and analyze the self-acceleration process of bulk state or Gaussian wavepackets toward the system’s boundary. The initial wavepackets will not only propagate toward the side where the eigenstates are localized, but also their momentum will approach to a specific value. This value corresponds to the maximum imaginary components of the energy dispersion. In addition, if the wavepackets in the momentum space cover this specific momentum, they will eventually exhibit exponentially increasing amplitudes with time evolution, maintaining the dynamic protected condition for an extended period of time until they approach the boundary. We also take two widely used toy models as examples in one and two dimensions to verify the correspondence of the non-Hermitian skin effect and the dynamic protected state.

Abstract Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a popular nonparametric tool for measuring the performance of decision making unit (DMU). Cross-efficiency evaluation is an efficient means to rank DMUs, which compensates for efficiency overestimation and incomplete ranking of conventional DEA models. With respect to incomplete rational cross-efficiency evaluation, the common methods construct models with two extreme efficiencies as reference, such as efficiency values of the aggressive and benevolent models. In addition, they only explore the irrational preferences of decision maker (DM) at a certain stage in the evaluation process. They fail to investigate the cross-efficiency evaluation synthetically under incomplete rationality and characterize the complexity of the individuals’ decision making. To fill this gap, a new method must be proposed. This paper proposes a new cross-efficiency termed regret cross-efficiency model using attitudinal entropy approach (RACE), which constructs a secondary goal model from a comprehensive perspective under the framework of regret theory, and introduces attitudinal entropy to aggregate the cross-efficiencies. Besides, this paper presents some empirical examples to illustrate the validity and robustness of the RACE method.

Abstract Background Low levels of the essential amino acid lysine in maize endosperm is considered to be a major problem regarding the nutritional quality of food and feed. Increasing the lysine content of maize is important to improve the quality of food and feed nutrition. Although the genetic basis of quality protein maize (QPM) has been studied, the further exploration of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying lysine content variation still needs more attention. Results Eight maize inbred lines with increased lysine content were used to construct four double haploid (DH) populations for identification of QTLs related to lysine content. The lysine content in the four DH populations exhibited continuous and normal distribution. A total of 12 QTLs were identified in a range of 4.42–12.66% in term of individual phenotypic variation explained (PVE) which suggested the quantitative control of lysine content in maize. Five main genes involved in maize lysine biosynthesis pathways in the QTL regions were identified in this study. Conclusions The information presented will allow the exploration of candidate genes regulating lysine biosynthesis pathways and be useful for marker-assisted selection and gene pyramiding in high-lysine maize breeding programs.

Due to the heterogeneity of nodes and edges, heterogeneous network embedding is a very challenging task to embed highly coupled networks into a set of low-dimensional vectors. Existing models either only learn embedding vectors for nodes or only for edges. These two methods of embedding learning are rarely performed in the same model, and they both overlook the internal correlation between nodes and edges. To solve these problems, a node and edge joint embedding model is proposed for Heterogeneous Information Networks (HINs), called NEJE. The NEJE model can better capture the latent structural and semantic information from an HIN through two joint learning strategies: type-level joint learning and element-level joint learning. Firstly, node-type-aware structure learning and edge-type-aware semantic learning are sequentially performed on the original network and its line graph to get the initial embedding of nodes and the embedding of edges. Then, to optimize performance, type-level joint learning is performed through the alternating training of node embedding on the original network and edge embedding on the line graph. Finally, a new homogeneous network is constructed from the original heterogeneous network, and the graph attention model is further used on the new network to perform element-level joint learning. Experiments on three tasks and five public datasets show that our NEJE model performance improves by about 2.83% over other models, and even improves by 6.42% on average for the node clustering task on Digital Bibliography & Library Project (DBLP) dataset.

The oral cavity harbors a diverse population of microorganisms, making it one of the most heavily colonized sites in the human body. Maintaining a balanced microecology is crucial for oral health. Ligilactobacillus salivarius as a species of Ligilactobacillus, has good oral colonization ability and potential to improve oral microecology for disease prevention and control. Currently, the application and mechanism of Ligilactobacillus salivarius in oral diseases include several aspects. First, by directly inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans and downregulating the expression of its cariogenic virulence factor, gtfs, the aim is to reduce the number of adherent Streptococcus mutans on the tooth surface, thereby preventing dental caries. Second, reducing the number of keystone taxa in periodontitis, and the virulence factors of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, including CdtB and LtxA, can alleviate local stimulation in patients with periodontitis. Additionally, directly inhibiting macrophage MAPK and NF-κB pathway activation suppresses osteoclastogenesis and reduces periodontal bone absorption. In mucosal inflammation, Ligilactobacillus salivarius competes with Candida albicans, inhibits the formation of pathogenic hyphae or germ tubes, and prevents monilial stomatitis. Ligilactobacillus salivarius can also reduce the amount of Staphylococcus aureus and mitigate the activation of the macrophage TLR/PI3K/Akt/mTOR and TLR/PI3K/Akt/IκB/NF-κB pathways induced by S. aureus infections, thus alleviating inflammation in the oral and pharyngeal regions. In vitro studies on oral tumors have revealed that Ligilactobacillus salivarius can downregulate the expression of cancer cell Akt/Cyclin D1, induce direct apoptosis of tumor cells, reduce COX-2 expression, and improve the tumor immune-suppressive microenvironment. Previous studies have revealed considerable variability in Ligilactobacillus salivarius, necessitating more detailed research to clarify its clinical effects, safety, and mechanisms. Despite the emergence of novel microbiological research techniques, their application to Ligilactobacillus salivarius remains relatively limited. One crucial direction for future research is to better utilize these methods to investigate the effects of Ligilactobacillus salivarius on oral diseases. Considering these factors, this study provides a comprehensive review of existing research studies on Ligilactobacillus salivarius in the fields of oral medicine and dentistry, with the aim to serve as a reference and guide for future studies.

Background: Soil salinization is one of the key factors restricting the production of cropland. Once rice is subjected to alkali stress at the bud burst stage, the yield will suffer irreparable serious loss. Compared with salt tolerance, studies on QTL mapping and candidate gene analysis of rice alkali tolerance are limited. Results: In this study, we used the F2:3 population derived from the alkali-tolerant cultivar LD21 and the alkali-sensitive cultivar WL138 to construct an alkali-tolerant DNA mixing pool, and the BSA (Bulked Segregation Analysis) method was used for re-sequencing. The main QTL qRSLB9 controlling the relative shoot length of rice under alkali stress was mapped by QTL-seq. The candidate interval was narrowed to 346.5 kb by regional linkage mapping, which containing 6 DEGs screened through transcriptome sequencing. The qRT-PCR and candidate gene sequencing showed that LOC_Os09g24260 was most likely to control relative shoot length (RSL) in rice as a major gene who encodes the WD domain, G-beta repeat domain-containing protein. Conclusions: Based on these results, LOC_Os09g24260 was the candidate gene of qRSLB9 conferring alkalinity tolerance to rice at the bud burst stage. When the ground communication base stations in the target area are severely destroyed, the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) ad hoc networks can provide people with temporary communication services. Therefore, it is necessary to design a multi-UAVs cooperative control strategy to achieve better communication coverage and lower energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a multi-UAVs coverage model based on Adaptive Virtual Force-directed Particle Swarm Optimization (AVF-PSO) strategy. In particular, we first introduce the gravity model into the traditional Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm so as to increase the probability of full coverage. Then, the energy consumption is included in the calculation of the fitness function so that maximum coverage and energy consumption can be balanced. Finally, in order to reduce the communication interference between UAVs, we design an adaptive lift control strategy based on the repulsion model to reduce the repeated coverage of multi-UAVs. Experimental results show that the proposed coverage strategy based on gravity model outperforms the existing state-of-the-art approaches. For example, in the target area of any size, the coverage rate and the repeated coverage rate of the proposed multi-UAVs scheduling are improved by 6.9–29.1%, and 2.0–56.1%, respectively. Moreover, the proposed scheduling algorithm is high adaptable to diverse execution environments.© 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract Xanthoma typically occurs in the subcutaneous tissues, with rare cases of xanthoma in the joints. However, the case of knee joint osteonecrosis combined with xanthoma is even more uncommon. In this article, we described a 50-year-old female patient who suffered xanthoma in the knee joint on the basis of osteonecrosis of the knee joint. The primary clinical symptoms were knee joint pain and limited mobility. The patient initially received conventional treatment for osteonecrosis. However, there was no significant improvement. Later, we found a synovial xanthoma in the patient’s knee. Finally, she underwent arthroscopic excision of the knee joint synovial xanthoma. Following the procedure, her VAS score decreased from 7 to 2, and knee joint mobility increased from 10–103° to 10–140°. Through our follow-up, the patient did not exhibit symptom recurrence. This case is valuable as it provides a feasible therapeutic approach for future clinical applications.

Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disease worldwide. Osteocalcin plays an important role in energy metabolism. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of action of chemically synthesized osteocalcin (csOCN) in ameliorating NAFLD. We demonstrated for the first time that csOCN attenuates lipid accumulation in the liver and hepatocytes by modulating CD36 protein expression. In addition, we found that the expression of p-AMPK, FOXO1 and BCL6 decreased and the expression of CD36 increased after OA/PA induction compared to the control group, and these effects were reversed by the addition of csOCN. In contrast, the therapeutic effect of csOCN was inhibited by the addition of AMPK inhibitors and BCL6 inhibitors. This finding suggested that csOCN regulates CD36 expression via the AMPK-FOXO1/BCL6 axis. In NAFLD mice, oral administration of csOCN also activated the AMPK pathway and reduced CD36 expression. Molecular docking revealed that osteocalcin has a docking site with CD36. Compared to oleic acid and palmitic acid, osteocalcin bound more strongly to CD36. Laser confocal microscopy results showed that osteocalcin colocalized with CD36 at the cell membrane. In conclusion, we demonstrated the regulatory role of csOCN in fatty acid uptake pathways for the first time; it regulates CD36 expression via the AMPK-FOXO1/BCL6 axis to reduce fatty acid uptake, and it affects fatty acid transport by may directly binding to CD36. There are indications that csOCN has potential as a CD36-targeted drug for the treatment of NAFLD.

Abstract Adversarial patches, a type of adversarial example, pose serious security threats to deep neural networks (DNNs) by inducing erroneous outputs. Existing gradient stabilization methods aim to stabilize the optimization direction of adversarial examples through accumulating gradient momentum to enhance attack transferability on black-box models. However, they are not fully effective for adversarial patches. The accumulated momentum during optimization often misaligns with the optimization direction, reducing their efficacy in black-box scenarios. We introduce an optimization method called Alternating Minimization for Adversarial Patch (AMAP). This method decomposes the original AP into multiple sub-patches and utilizes their update direction to stabilize the optimization of the original AP. Additionally, we propose an adaptive step size optimization method that accelerates convergence and boosts the attack performance. In face recognition tasks, AMAP outperforms baseline methods by a remarkable 5.21% and exceeds the second-best method by 1.4%. Furthermore, AMAP demonstrates practical feasibility in the physical domain, highlighting its potential for robust computer security testing applications.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) stands as the predominant form of dementia, presenting significant and escalating global challenges. Its etiology is intricate and diverse, stemming from a combination of factors such as aging, genetics, and environment. Our current understanding of AD pathologies involves various hypotheses, such as the cholinergic, amyloid, tau protein, inflammatory, oxidative stress, metal ion, glutamate excitotoxicity, microbiota-gut-brain axis, and abnormal autophagy. Nonetheless, unraveling the interplay among these pathological aspects and pinpointing the primary initiators of AD require further elucidation and validation. In the past decades, most clinical drugs have been discontinued due to limited effectiveness or adverse effects. Presently, available drugs primarily offer symptomatic relief and often accompanied by undesirable side effects. However, recent approvals of aducanumab (1) and lecanemab (2) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) present the potential in disrease-modifying effects. Nevertheless, the long-term efficacy and safety of these drugs need further validation. Consequently, the quest for safer and more effective AD drugs persists as a formidable and pressing task. This review discusses the current understanding of AD pathogenesis, advances in diagnostic biomarkers, the latest updates of clinical trials, and emerging technologies for AD drug development. We highlight recent progress in the discovery of selective inhibitors, dual-target inhibitors, allosteric modulators, covalent inhibitors, proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs), and protein-protein interaction (PPI) modulators. Our goal is to provide insights into the prospective development and clinical application of novel AD drugs.

Abstract The present study aimed to explore the association between serum cystatin C (Cys-C) levels and visceral fat area (VFA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 208 previously diagnosed T2DM patients who visited our hospital from September 2019 to December 2021 were included and divided into three groups based on tertiles of Cys-C levels, namely, Groups C1, C2, and C3. The clinical data of the subjects were collected, biochemical parameters such as Cys-C levels were determined, and bioelectrical impedance analysis was applied to determine the VFA and subcutaneous fat area (SFA). The VFA in Group C1 was lower than that in Groups C2 and C3 (all P 0.05). Abstract Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to multi-carbon products is a promising approach for achieving carbon-neutral economies. However, the energy efficiency of these processes remains low, particularly at high current densities. Herein, we demonstrate that the low energy efficiencies are, in part, sometimes significantly, attributed to the high concentration overpotential resulting from the instability (i.e., flooding) of catalyst-layer during electrolysis. To tackle this challenge, we develop copper/gallium bimetallic catalysts with reduced activation energies for the formation of multi-carbon products. Consequently, the reduced activation overpotential allows us to achieve practical-relevant current densities for CO2 reduction at low cathodic potentials, ensuring good stability of the catalyst-layer and thereby minimizing the undesired concentration overpotential. The optimized bimetallic catalyst achieves over 50% cathodic energy efficiency for multi-carbon production at a high current density of over $$1.0 \, {{\rm{A}}} \, {{\rm{cm}}}^{-2}$$ 1.0 A cm − 2 . Furthermore, we achieve current densities exceeding $$2.0 \, {{\rm{A}}} \, {{\rm{cm}}}^{-2}$$ 2.0 A cm − 2 in a zero-gap membrane-electrode-assembly reactor, with a full-cell energy efficiency surpassing 30%.

Abstract Background Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are the prominent cell type in the tumor microenvironment (TME), and CAF subsets have been identified in various tumors. However, how CAFs spatially coordinate other cell populations within the liver TME to promote cancer progression remains unclear. Methods We combined multi-region proteomics (6 patients, 24 samples), 10X Genomics Visium spatial transcriptomics (11 patients, 25 samples), and multiplexed imaging (92 patients, 264 samples) technologies to decipher the expression heterogeneity, functional diversity, spatial distribution, colocalization, and interaction of fibroblasts. The newly identified CAF subpopulation was validated by cells isolated from 5 liver cancer patients and in vitro functional assays. Results We identified a liver CAF subpopulation, marked by the expression of COL1A2, COL4A1, COL4A2, CTGF, and FSTL1, and named F5-CAF. F5-CAF is preferentially located within and around tumor nests and colocalizes with cancer cells with higher stemness in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Multiplexed staining of 92 patients and the bulk transcriptome of 371 patients demonstrated that the abundance of F5-CAFs in HCC was associated with a worse prognosis. Further in vitro experiments showed that F5-CAFs isolated from liver cancer patients can promote the proliferation and stemness of HCC cells. Conclusions We identified a CAF subpopulation F5-CAF in liver cancer, which is associated with cancer stemness and unfavorable prognosis. Our results provide potential mechanisms by which the CAF subset in the TME promotes the development of liver cancer by supporting the survival of cancer stem cells.

Abstract Background Positive solitude, taken as a meaningful activity, contributes to the improvement of health, well-being, and quality of life of older adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Positive Solitude Scale (PS) among Chinese older to provide a reference for related research. Methods A convenience sample of 608 older people from 10 provinces in China was used to conduct the survey. Results The Chinese version of the PS consisted of 9 items with a unidimensional structure, which could explain 60.91% of the variance. The factor loadings of each item ranged from 0.67 to 0.82, and the communality ranged from 0.44 to 0.68. The confirmatory factor analysis showed good model fit (χ2/df = 2.771, RMSEA = 0.076, CFI = 0.972, IFI = 0.972, TLI = 0.959, PNFI = 0.665, PCFI = 0.675). It was found from the criterion-related validity test that PS scores were significantly and positively correlated with Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness scores (r = 0.45 to 0.44); PS scores were significantly and negatively correlated with Short-Form UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-6), Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), Ego Depletion Scale (EDS), and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-2nd Edition (AAQ-II) (r = -0.27 to -0.36). The Cronbach’s α coefficient value for the scale was 0.917; the split-half reliability coefficient value was 0.928. In addition, the PS showed cross-gender consistency. Conclusions The PS presented favorable psychometric characteristics in older people, which can be used as a valid tool for assessing older people’s positive solitude.

Abstract Objective Closure surgery of patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been found to effectively control cryptogenic stroke and migraine, but it is uncertain whether PFO closure could also alleviate epileptic seizures. This study aims to observe the therapeutic effect of PFO closure on epileptic seizures. Methods Since July 11th, 2017, in the neurology department of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, we have been regularly monitoring patients with epilepsy who have undergone PFO closure. The patient's clinical information, such as frequency, duration, and severity of seizures, before and after surgery was recorded in detail as well as postoperative safety events. Results Of the 31 epilepsy patients who confirmed PFO observed (27 cases were drug‐resistant epilepsy, 87.10%), average age of surgery was 23.74 years, and 12 cases were female (38.71%). After one‐year follow‐up, 26 patients (83.87%) achieved remission of seizure frequency, and 22 of whom (70.97%) experienced a remission of more than 50%. Additionally, compared to before surgery, 22 cases (70.97%) reported a decrease in the average seizure duration, and 20 cases (64.52%) reported a reduction in seizure severity. In object segmentation, the existence of hard-classified-pixels limits the segmentation performance. Focusing on these hard pixels through assigning different weights to pixel loss can guide the learning of segmentation model effectively. Existing loss weight assignment methods perceive pixels hardness by current predicted information, pay less attention to past predicted information. While current studies show that samples with less improvement in predicted probability compared to the past are difficult to learn. To define hard pixels more accurately, a hardness-aware loss for object segmentation is proposed. Firstly, the metric of pixel hardness degree is defined, and a mapping function is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the hardness degree which is defined on the difference between current and past predicted probabilities. Then a new compound metric, hardness value, is defined based on hardness degree and the uncertainty. Based on the compound metric, a new loss function is proposed. Experiment results on four datasets using convolutional neural network and Transformer as the backbone models demonstrate that the proposed method effectively improves the accuracy of object segmentation. Especially, in the segmentation model based on ResNet-50, the proposed method improves mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) by almost 4.3 % compared to cross entropy on DUT-O dataset.

Objective China's oil and gas exploration is advancing towards the field of shale oil and gas. Overpressure is commonly developed in organic shale, and the lack of prediction methods for shale pore pressure restricts the research on shale oil and gas. Methods This article analyses the physical response characteristics of rock to hydrocarbon generation, pressurization and disequilibrium compaction. Based on density and sound velocity data, the differential responses of hydrocarbon generation pressurization and disequilibrium compaction pressurization were analysed. The hydrocarbon generation pressurization amount is calculated using sound velocity and density, and the disequilibrium compaction is calculated using the density data. Finally, the sound velocity rebound method was established. This article selects the Bodong Depression, which has superior hydrocarbon generation conditions, as a case study. First, comprehensive mudstone compaction curves, loading-unloading curves, and sound velocity-density diagrams are used to comprehensively identify the cause of overpressure. Then, the sound velocity rebound method is used to quantitatively calculate the pressure increase and formation pore pressure of a single well under compaction and hydrocarbon generation, and the results are compared with those of numerical simulations and conventional calculation methods. Results Taking the LD21-A well as an example, shale overpressure is caused by a combination of hydrocarbon generation and disequilibrium compaction. The pressure prediction results show that the overpressure of nonsource rock layers is contributed by the disequilibrium compaction. The overpressure of the source rock formation is contributed by hydrocarbon generation and disequilibrium compaction, with hydrocarbon generation pressurization mainly distributed between 5 MPa and 15 MPa (accounting for approximately 35% to 65%), and the measured pressure point hydrocarbon generation pressurization is 11.09 MPa (accounting for 45%). Conclusion This new method is vital of importance for the research of both shale and conventional oil and gas fields.

Abstract Skillful subseasonal forecasts are crucial for various sectors of society but pose a grand scientific challenge. Recently, machine learning-based weather forecasting models outperform the most successful numerical weather predictions generated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), but have not yet surpassed conventional models at subseasonal timescales. This paper introduces FuXi Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (FuXi-S2S), a machine learning model that provides global daily mean forecasts up to 42 days, encompassing five upper-air atmospheric variables at 13 pressure levels and 11 surface variables. FuXi-S2S, trained on 72 years of daily statistics from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis data, outperforms the ECMWF’s state-of-the-art Subseasonal-to-Seasonal model in ensemble mean and ensemble forecasts for total precipitation and outgoing longwave radiation, notably enhancing global precipitation forecast. The improved performance of FuXi-S2S can be primarily attributed to its superior capability to capture forecast uncertainty and accurately predict the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), extending the skillful MJO prediction from 30 days to 36 days. Moreover, FuXi-S2S not only captures realistic teleconnections associated with the MJO but also emerges as a valuable tool for discovering precursor signals, offering researchers insights and potentially establishing a new paradigm in Earth system science research.

Abstract The regulation of circadian rhythms and the sleep–wake states involves in multiple neural circuits. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a circadian pacemaker that controls the rhythmic oscillation of mammalian behaviors. The basal forebrain (BF) is a critical brain region of sleep–wake regulation, which is the downstream of the SCN. Retrograde tracing of cholera toxin subunit B showed a direct projection from the SCN to the horizontal limbs of diagonal band (HDB), a subregion of the BF. However, the underlying function of the SCN–HDB pathway remains poorly understood. Herein, activation of this pathway significantly increased non–rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep during the dark phase by using optogenetic recordings. Moreover, activation of this pathway significantly induced NREM sleep during the dark phase for first 4 h by using chemogenetic methods. Taken together, these findings reveal that the SCN–HDB pathway participates in NREM sleep regulation and provides direct evidence of a novel SCN-related pathway involved in sleep–wake states regulation.

Abstract Background Striga asiatica (L.) O. Kuntze is a traditional medicinal plant rich in flavonoids, which has various pharmacological effects such as anti-hepatitis and antioxidant activities. However, there is a scarcity of resources, and artificial cultivation has not yet been achieved. This study explored the association between flavonoid metabolites and soil physicochemical properties and trace elements in different habitats, with the aim of offering theoretical guidance for the high-quality artificial cultivation of S. asiatica. Results The results showed that S. asiatica has low requirements for soil fertility and prefers to grow in acidic soil with high contents of potassium and available potassium, while low contents of phosphorus, nitrogen and alkali hydrolyzed nitrogen. Additionally, 1592 kinds of metabolites were identified from S. asiatica, including 78 flavonoids. Conclusions The flavonoid metabolites were strongly related to soil factors. Reasonable application of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers as well as controlling the contents of sodium, manganese and boron in the soil, can promote the synthesis of flavonoid metabolites in the plant. Moreover, kaempferide, glycitein, luteolin, apigenin and genistein may be the metabolic markers for identifying different regions. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a type of breast cancer that is negative for oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, is highly malignant and aggressive, lacks of corresponding targeted therapy, and has a relatively poor prognosis. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of TNBC development and formulating effective treatment strategies for inducing cell death are still urgent tasks in the treatment of TNBC. Research has shown that uncarboxylated osteocalcin can promote the proliferation of prostate cancer, lung adenocarcinoma and TNBC cells, but the mechanism by which GluOC affects TNBC growth and metastasis needs further study. Methods MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells were used for in vitro cell analysis. Key target molecules or pathways were identified by RNA sequencing, and migration ability was detected by scratch assays, Transwell assays, cell adhesion assays and western blot analysis. Fluorescence staining, colony detection, qRT‒PCR and flow cytometry were used to detect apoptosis, oxidative stress, the cell cycle and the stemness of cancer cells, and a xenotransplantation model in BALB/C nude mice was used for in vivo analysis. Results This study demonstrated that GluOC facilitates the migration of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells through the ROCK1/MYPT1/MLC2 signalling pathway and promotes the proliferation of TNBC cells via the ROCK1/JAK2/PIK3CA/AKT signalling pathway. Experiments in nude mice demonstrated that GluOC promoted tumour cell proliferation and metastasis in tumour-bearing mice, which further clarified the molecular mechanism of TNBC growth and invasion. Conclusion Our findings highlight the importance of GluOC in driving TNBC progression and its association with poor patient outcomes. This study clarifies the functional effects of GluOC on TNBC growth, providing insight into the molecular basis of TNBC and potentially providing new ideas for developing targeted therapies to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract Continuous hemodynamic monitoring in a wearable means can play a crucial role in managing hypertension and preventing catastrophic cardiovascular events. In this study, we have described the fully wearable tonometric device, referred to as flexible adaptive sensing tonometry (FAST), which is capable of continuous and accurate monitoring of hemodynamic parameters within the medical-grade precision. In particular, the FAST system integrates a 1 × 8 unit array of highly sensitive and highly flexible iontronic sensing (FITS) with 1 mm spatial resolution and a closed-loop motion system. The flexible tonometric architecture has been used to determine the radial arterial position with high sensitivity and high conformability, which simplifies the biaxial searching process of the traditional applanation tonometry into a highly efficient uniaxial applanation while keeping the medical-precision assessments. Importantly, a self-calibration algorithm can be automatically implemented during the applanation process, from which the intra-arterial blood pressure wave can be continuously predicted within the medical-grade precision, and subsequently, multi-parametric hemodynamic analysis can be performed in real-time. Experimental validations on health volunteers have demonstrated that the FAST measurements are all within the required accuracy of the clinical standards for continuous pulse wave assessments, blood pressure monitoring as well as other key hemodynamic parameter evaluations. Therefore, the FAST system, by integrating the flexible iontronic sensing array, provides a real-time, medical-grade hemodynamic monitoring solution in a continuously wearable manner, from which remote patient-centered monitoring can be delivered with both medical precision and convenience.

Abstract Achieving stable and reliable 2D-2D van der Waals heterostructures remains challenging. The broadest strategy for synthesizing these heterostructures is growth or manually stacking one material on top of the other, yet it is inefficient. Here, we present a strategy for synthesizing covalently bonded MoS2-graphene heterostructures using organic linkers with two anchor sites at a low cost. Our covalent heterostructures exhibit a more homogeneously alternating structure than the corresponding randomly alternating structure of vdW heterostructures, as confirmed by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) measurements. Moreover, different linkers can be used to adjust the interlayer distance between graphene and MoS2, leading to significant impacts on their optical and electrochemical properties, including Photoluminescence (PL), cyclic voltammetry (CV), Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and SERS. Our strategy offers opportunities to advance fundamental research and enable the practical application of 2D/2D van der Waals heterostructures in various fields, including optoelectronics, energy storage, and catalysis.

Background/Aims To determine the association between evolutionary changes in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) status and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a nationwide population-based cohort. Methods Information on study participants was derived from the Korea National Health Insurance Service database. The study population consisted of 5,080,410 participants who underwent two consecutive biennial health screenings between 2009 and 2012. All participants were followed up until HCC, death, or 31 December 2020. The association of evolutionary changes in MASLD status, as assessed by the fatty liver index and cardiometabolic risk factors, including persistent non-MASLD, resolved MASLD, incident MASLD, and persistent MASLD, with HCC risk was evaluated using multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Among the 5,080,410 participants with 39,910,331 person-years of follow-up, 4,801 participants developed HCC. The incidence of HCC in participants with resolved, incident, and persistent MASLD was approximately 2.2-, 2.3-, and 4.7-fold higher, respectively, than that in those with persistent non-MASLD among the Korean adult population. Novel plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2 toughened (Zr, Ti, W, Ta)C medium-entropy ceramics were designed based on the atomic scale, nanoscale, and microscale, and prepared via the in-situ reaction hot-pressing adopting (Ti, W, Ta)C and ZrB2 powders. The multiphase ceramics were primarily composed of the (Zr, Ti, W, Ta)C matrix and plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2. When the addition of ZrB2 exceeds 50 mol%, the residual ZrB2 causes the secondary primary phase to change from (Ti, Zr)B2 to (Zr, Ti)B2. The improvement of fracture toughness is primarily influenced by the plate-like (Ti, Zr)B2 on crack propagation mechanisms such as bridging effect and crack deflection. (Ti, W, Ta)C- 50 mol% ZrB2 (raw powder composition) exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, boasting a Vickers hardness of 24.9 GPa, fracture toughness of 5.5 MPa·m1/2, and flexural strength of 552 MPa, which present a novel avenue for achieving a synergistic enhancement in Vickers hardness and fracture toughness within medium-entropy carbide ceramics.

Abstract Controlling the concentrations of H2O and CO2 at the reaction interface is crucial for achieving efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction. However, precise control of these variables during catalysis remains challenging, and the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Herein, guided by a multi-physics model, we demonstrate that tuning the local H2O/CO2 concentrations is achievable by thin polymer coatings on the catalyst surface. Beyond the often-explored hydrophobicity, polymer properties of gas permeability and water-uptake ability are even more critical for this purpose. With these insights, we achieve CO2 reduction on copper with Faradaic efficiency exceeding 87% towards multi-carbon products at a high current density of −2 A cm−2. Encouraging cathodic energy efficiency (>50%) is also observed at this high current density due to the substantially reduced cathodic potential. Additionally, we demonstrate stable CO2 reduction for over 150 h at practically relevant current densities owning to the robust reaction interface. Moreover, this strategy has been extended to membrane electrode assemblies and other catalysts for CO2 reduction. Our findings underscore the significance of fine-tuning the local H2O/CO2 balance for future CO2 reduction applications.

Abstract Friction as a fundamental physical phenomenon dominates nature and human civilization, among which the achievement of molecular rolling lubrication is desired to bring another breakthrough, like the macroscale design of wheel. Herein, an edge self-curling nanodeformation phenomenon of graphite nanosheets (GNSs) at cryogenic temperature is found, which is then used to promote the formation of graphite nanorollers in friction process towards molecular rolling lubrication. The observation of parallel nanorollers at the friction interface give the experimental evidence for the occurrence of molecular rolling lubrication, and the graphite exhibits abnormal lubrication performance in vacuum with ultra-low friction and wear at macroscale. The molecular rolling lubrication mechanism is elucidated from the electronic interaction perspective. Experiments and theoretical simulations indicate that the driving force of the self-curling is the uneven atomic shrinkage induced stress, and then the shear force promotes the intact nanoroller formation, while the constraint of atomic vibration decreases the dissipation of driving stress and favors the nanoroller formation therein. It will open up a new pathway for controlling friction at microscale and nanostructural manipulation.

Abstract Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and enzymes (AMEs) are promising non-antibiotic candidates against antimicrobial resistance but suffer from low efficiency and poor stability. Here, we develop peptide nanozymes which mimic the mode of action of AMPs and AMEs through de novo design and peptide assembly. Through modelling a minimal building block of IHIHICI is proposed by combining critical amino acids in AMPs and AMEs and hydrophobic isoleucine to conduct assembly. Experimental validations reveal that IHIHICI assemble into helical β-sheet nanotubes with acetate modulation and perform phospholipase C-like and peroxidase-like activities with Ni coordination, demonstrating high thermostability and resistance to enzymatic degradation. The assembled nanotubes demonstrate cascade antifungal actions including outer mannan docking, wall disruption, lipid peroxidation and subsequent ferroptotic death, synergistically killing >90% Candida albicans within 10 min on disinfection pad. These findings demonstrate an effective de novo design strategy for developing materials with multi-antimicrobial mode of actions.

Abstract Background Increasing evidence suggests that leptin is involved in the pathology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, our objective was to investigate the levels of leptin in the blood of children with ASD and to examine the overall profile of adipokine markers in ASD through meta-analysis. Methods Leptin concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, while adipokine profiling, including leptin, was performed via meta-analysis. Original reports that included measurements of peripheral adipokines in ASD patients and healthy controls (HCs) were collected from databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. These studies were collected from September 2022 to September 2023 and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Abstract Background Women at middle age are puzzled by a series of menopausal disturbances, can be distressing and considerably affect the personal, social and work lives. We aim to estimate the global prevalence of nineteen menopausal symptoms among middle-aged women by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods Comprehensive search was performed in multiple databases from January, 2000 to March, 2023 for relevant studies. Random-effect model with double-arcsine transformation was used for data analysis. Results A total of 321 studies comprised of 482,067 middle-aged women were included for further analysis. We found varied prevalence of menopausal symptoms, with the highest prevalence of joint and muscular discomfort (65.43%, 95% CI 62.51–68.29) and lowest of formication (20.5%, 95% CI 13.44–28.60). Notably, South America shared dramatically high prevalence in a sort of menopausal symptoms including depression and urogenital symptoms. Objective Total hip arthroplasty (THA) effectively treats end‐stage hemophilic hip arthropathy. Given hemophilia's unique characteristics, perioperative bleeding remains a significant risk for patients undergoing THA. Tranexamic acid (TXA), an efficient antifibrinolytic agent, may benefit the outcomes of THA for patients with hemophilia (PWH). This study aims to explore the clinical efficacy of intra‐articular injection of TXA in treating perioperative bleeding in PWH and assess its additional clinical benefits. Methods The retrospective study comprised data of PWH who received THA from January 2015 to December 2021 in the research center. A total of 59 individuals were included in the study, divided into a TXA group (n = 31) and a non‐TXA group (n = 28). Abstract Significant structural differences in DNN-based object detectors hinders the transferability of adversarial attacks. Studies show that intermediate features extracted by the detector contain more model-independent information, and disrupting these features can enhance attack transferability across different detectors. However, the challenge lies in selecting crucial features that impact detection from redundant intermediate features. To address this issue, we introduce the Deep information bottleneck universal adversarial perturbation (DIB-UAP). DIB-UAP utilizes the deep information bottleneck to establish a link between intermediate features and model output, extracting crucial intermediate features and disrupting them to generate UAP with strong attack transferability. Additionally, we propose a data augmentation method, Scale & Tile, which effectively enhances the attack performance of UAP on medium and large-scale objects. Testing on two benchmark datasets with eight comparative methods across four black-box mainstream detectors has confirmed the attack transferability of DIB-UAP. Furthermore, practical utility validation of DIB-UAP has been conducted on a commercial object detection platform.

Abstract Self-distillation method guides the model learning via transferring knowledge of the model itself, which has shown the advantages in object segmentation. However, it has been proved that uncertain pixels with predicted probability close to 0.5 will restrict the model performance. The existing self-distillation methods cannot guide the model to enhance its learning ability for uncertain pixels, so the improvement is limited. To boost the student model’s learning ability for uncertain pixels, a novel self-distillation method is proposed. Firstly, the predicted probability in the current training sample and the ground truth label are fused to construct the teacher knowledge, as the current predicted information can express the performance of student models and represent the uncertainty of pixels more accurately. Secondly, a quadratic mapping function between the predicted probabilities of the teacher and student model is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed method using the mapping function can guide the model to enhance the learning ability for uncertain pixels. Finally, the essential difference of utilizing the predicted probability of the student model in self-distillation is discussed in detail. Extensive experiments were conducted on models with convolutional neural networks and Transformer architectures as the backbone networks. The results on four public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively improve the student model performance.

Abstract Schizophrenia (SCZ), which affects approximately 1% of the world’s population, is a global public health concern. It is generally considered that the interplay between genes and the environment is important in the onset and/or development of SCZ. Although several whole-exome sequencing studies have revealed rare risk variants of SCZ, no rare coding variants have been strongly replicated. Assessing isolated populations under extreme conditions might lead to the discovery of variants with a recent origin, which are more likely to have a higher frequency than chance to reflect gene-environment interactions. Following this approach, we examined a unique cohort of Tibetans living at an average altitude above 4500 meters. Whole-exome sequencing of 47 SCZ cases and 53 controls revealed 275 potential novel risk variants and two known variants (12:46244485: A/G and 22:18905934: A/G) associated with SCZ that were found in existing databases. Only one gene (C5orf42) in the gene-based statistics surpassed the exome-wide significance in the cohort. Metascape enrichment analysis suggested that novel risk genes were strongly enriched in pathways relevant to hypoxia, neurodevelopment, and neurotransmission. Additionally, 47 new risk genes were followed up in Han sample of 279 patients with SCZ and 95 controls, only BAI2 variant appearing in one case. Our findings suggest that SCZ patients living at high altitudes may have a unique risk gene signature, which may provide additional information on the underlying biology of SCZ, which can be exploited to identify individuals at greater risk of exposure to hypoxia.
