1. The ESR Gene Family’s Roles in Arabidopsis Development and Organogenesis

Abstract: In Arabidopsis thaliana, the shoot and root apical meristems (SAM and RAM) regulate vertical growth and lateral growth. Meristems contain stem cells that differentiate to form organs under the influence of hormones and transcription factors. This thesis focuses on the ESR gene family: a subclass of the AP2/ERF super family of transcription factors. The ESR gene family has 6 members: ESR1/DRN, ESR2/DRNL, PUCHI, LEP, LEP2 (AT1G28160), and ESR3 (AT1G12890). Previous studies show that the ESR gene family plays a role in embryogenesis and floral/lateral root organogenesis, though the particular roles of LEP2 and ESR3 have not been defined. To further determine the “collective function” of the ESR gene family, I have generated ESR-gene-free plants named “esr sextuple (6x) mutants” using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing and selective mutant crossing over multiple generations. The lack of ESR genes led to incomplete flowers, though esr sextuple mutants retain the ability to transition into the reproductive phase. The esr sextuple (6x) mutants produced pin-like structures, indicating floral meristem arrest. The majority of esr sextuple mutants die right after gemination and most seedlings had no cotyledons. Preliminary auxin root elongation assays were conducted with a population of plants that were esr2 heterozygous and homozygous for the other ESR genes. I observed that the esr high-order mutants had delayed initiation of lateral root growth, similar to puchi single mutants. Transgenic lines overexpressing ESR3 and LEP2 were generated to further study their functions. Overexpression of ESR3 led to stunted growth, increased organ density along the stem, and rippled leaf phenotypes. Overexpression of LEP2 caused seed arrest, with few germinated seeds that died soon after germination.

2. Dileptonic cross-sections and asymmetries at LEP2 and constraints on physics beyond theStandard Model

Abstract: I describe in this HDR the scientific works that I have done since my PhD, defended in 1994. The first part of these works was devoted to the development of detectors within the BaBar experiment. The second part, more extensively described here, was the study of the di-leptonic events produced in the ALEPH experiment at LEP2. In the BaBar experiment, I initially contributed to the feasibility study of a Cerenkov counter dedicated to the identification of charged particles. I had then the responsibility of the construction of a wire chamber for the monitoring of the gain, installed in the gas distribution system of the BaBar drift chamber. These activities included design and simulation of instruments as well as analysis of tests data. Then, I participated to the LEP2 data analysis by measuring cross-sections and forward-backward asymmetries of the di-leptonic processes. I made the interpretation of these measurements under various scenarios of new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as four fermions contact interactions, extra-dimensions and production of sneutrinos with R-parity violation. Moreover, I participated to the combination of the di-leptonic results from the four LEP experiments. Those years between construction of detectors and data analysis in the field of electroweak physics make me join today the thematic of neutrinos. The research plan that I present here focuses on this thematic, especially on my future involvement in the Laguna-LBNO project. Finally, I describe also here my various scientific outreach activities, especially toward the scholars, because, in addition to my research and teaching, this is a non-negligible part of my activity in the past decade., Sont décrits dans cette HDR, les travaux scientifiques que j'ai réalisés depuis ma thèse, soutenue en 1994. La première partie de ces travaux fut consacrée à la construction et au développement de détecteurs au sein de l'expérience BaBar. La seconde partie, plus longuement développée ici, fut l'étude des processus di-leptoniques e+e- ->l+l- au sein de l'expérience ALEPH à LEP2. Dans l'expérience BaBar, j'ai tout d'abord contribué à l'étude de faisabilité d'un compteur Cerenkov à seuil dédié à l'identification des particules chargées. J'ai ensuite eu la responsabilité de la construction d'une chambre à fils de contrôle du gain installée dans le système de gaz de la chambre à dérive de BaBar. Ces activités incluaient un travail de conception et de simulation de détecteurs ainsi qu'un travail d'analyse de données de tests. J'ai ensuite participé à l'analyse des données de LEP2 par la mesure des sections efficaces et des asymétries avant-arrière des processus di-leptoniques. J'ai effectué l'interprétation de ces mesures dans le cadre de différents scénarios de nouvelle physique au-delà du Modèle Standard, tels que les interactions de contact à quatre fermions, les dimensions supplémentaires ou la production de sneutrinos avec violation de R-parité. J'ai de plus participé à la combinaison des résultats di-leptoniques des quatre expériences LEP. Ces années passées entre construction de détecteurs et analyse de données dans le domaine de la physique électrofaible m'incitent à rejoindre aujourd'hui la thématique des neutrinos. Le projet de recherche que je présente est centré sur cette thématique, notamment sur mon implication future dans le projet Laguna-LBNO. Enfin, je décris aussi dans ce mémoire mes différentes activités de diffusion scientifique, notamment auprès du public scolaire, car, en plus de mon travail de recherche et d'enseignement, c'est un aspect important de mon activité de ces dix dernières années.

Abstract: These final results on e+e- → W +W- production cross-section measurements at LEP2 use data collected by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. Measurements of total cross-sections, W angular differential distributions and decay branching fractions, and the value of the CKM element |Vcs| are compared to the expectations of the Standard Model. These results supersede all values previously published by DELPHI.

Abstract: W+W-gamma production at LEP2 is studied using data collected with the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 600 pb^-1. Cross-sections are measured for the production of W+W- with a hard, central and isolated photon in the final state, and are found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction. The photon energy spectra are used to derive limits on anomalous contributions to the W+W-Z0gamma and W+W-gammagamma vertices., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The start of LEP2 at energies in the centre of masse above the W-pair production threshold, has made possible for the first time to test the least bounded sector of the Standard Model, the bosonic sector. This thesis consists in three strong measurements of the validity of the Standard Model using the whole LEP2 data set recorded by the ALEPH detector : - The measurement of the ZZ cross section through the five visible decay channels of the Z-pair. - The measurement of the anomalous neutral gauge couplings in tile ZZ final state. These couplings are forbidden in the Standard Model and their existence would be the sign of a New Physics. The information on the cross section as well as the angular distribution of the Z is used to extract them. - The measurement of the longitudinal and transverse polarised states of the W bosons through the W+W- production in the semi-leptonic channel. The spin density matrix method is used because it introduces a "model independent" framework. No deviation is observed with respect to the Standard Model predictions.; La phase LEP2, à des énergies supérieures au seuil de production des paires de W et de Z, a permis l'étude du secteur le moins contraint du Modèle Standard, le secteur des bosons de jauge. Le travail de cette thèse, en utilisant l'ensemble des données de LEP2 enregistrées par le détecteur ALEPH; consiste en trois mesures fortes sur la validité de ce Modèle Standard : - La mesure de la section efficace ZZ à travers les cinq canaux visibles de désintégration de la paire de Z. La faible statistique associée à la production de paires de Z en fait un processus délicat à discrimer. - La mesure des couplages anomaux neutres dans l'état final ZZ. Ces couplages sont interdits dans le Modèle Standard et leur présence serait signe d'une Physique Nouvelle. Leur extraction utilise l'information sur la section efficace et l'angle de production du Z. - La mesure des états de polarisation longitudinal et transverse des bosons W à travers la production W+W- dans le canal semi-leptonique. L'extraction se fait à partir de la matrice densité de spin ce qui permet d'obtenir des résultats indépendants du modèle utilisé pour décrire le phénomène. Les résultats obtenus dans ces trois domaines de mesure ne présentent pas de déviation significative par rapport aux prédictions du Modèle Standard.

Abstract: The cross sections for the production of single charged and neutral intermediate vector bosons were measured using integrated luminosities of 52 pb-1 and 154 pb-1 collected by the experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 182.6 GeV and 188.6 GeV, respectively. The cross sections for the reactions were determined in limited kinematic regions. 8. Search for sleptons in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s=183 to 189 GeV

Abstract: Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb(-1) have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay ((l) over tilde --> l)over tilde>(0)(1)); producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay ((l) over tilde --> l)over tilde>(0)(2) -->l gamma)over tilde>(0)(1)), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are m((e) over bar) less than or equal to 87 GeV/c(2), m()over bar>) less than or equal to 80 GeV/c(2) and m()over bar>) less than or equal to 75 GeV/c(2), respectively, for values of mu = -200 GeV/c(2) and tan beta = 1.5.

Abstract: Measurements of on-shell ZZ production are described, using data collected by DELPHI in 1997 and 1998, at centre-of-mass energies sqrt(s) = 182.6 GeV and 188.6 GeV respectively. Results obtained in each of the final states q qbar q qbar, mu+mu- q qbar, e+e- q qbar, nu nubar q qbar, l+l-l+l-, and nu nubar l+l- are presented. The measured cross-sections for on-shell ZZ production via the tree-level doubly-resonant graphs (NC02) are: sigma_{NC02}(182.6 GeV) = 0.38 +- 0.18 (stat) +- 0.04 (syst) pb, sigma_{NC02}(188.6 GeV) = 0.60 +- 0.13 (stat) +- 0.07 (syst) pb. They are consistent with the Standard Model expectations of 0.25 pb and 0.65 pb at each energy., 18 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest neutralino in models where an effective bilinear term in the superpotential parametrizes the explicit breaking of R-parity. We consider supergravity scenarios where the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is the lightest neutralino and which can be explored at LEP2. We present a detailed study of the LSP decay properties and general features of the corresponding signals expected at LEP2. Abstract: From data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 53.5 pb(-1) taken during the 183 GeV run in 1997, DELPHI has measured the W mass from direct reconstruction of WW --> lq (q) over bar and WW --> q (q) over bar q (q) over bar events. Combining these channels, a value of m(w) = 80.238 +/- 0.154(stat) +/- 0.035(syst) +/- 0.035(fsi) +/- 0.021 (LEP) GeV/c(2) is obtained, where fsi denotes final state interaction. Combined with the W mass obtained by DELPHI from the WW production cross-section and with the direct measurement at 172 GeV this leads to a measured value of m(w) = 80.270 +/- 0.137(stat) +/- 0.031(syst) +/- 0.030(fsi) +/- 0.021(LEP)GeV/c(2), in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The width of the W boson is also measured, giving the value Gamma(W) = 2.48 +/- 0.40(stat) +/- 0.10(syst)GeV/c(2). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Data taken by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 183 GeV and 189 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 212 pb-1 have been used to search for the supersymmetric partners of the electrons, muons, and taus in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The decay topologies searched for were the direct decay (ℓ̃ → ℓx̃), producing acoplanar lepton pairs plus missing energy, and the cascade decay (ℓ → ℓx̃02 → ℓγx̃01), producing acoplanar lepton and photon pairs plus missing energy. The observed number of events is in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The 95% CL excluded mass limits for selectrons, smuons and staus are mẽ ≤ 87 GeV/c2, mμ̃ ≤ 80 GeV/c2 and mτ̃ 75 GeV/c2, respectively, for values of μ=-200 GeV/c2 and tanβ=1.5.
