We study three two-stage optimization problems with a similar structure and different objectives. In the first stage of each problem, the goal is to assign input jobs of positive sizes to unsplittable bags. After this assignment is decided, the realization of the number of identical machines that will be available is revealed. Then, in the second stage, the bags are assigned to machines. The probability vector of the number of machines in the second stage is known to the algorithm as part of the input before making the decisions of the first stage. Thus, the vector of machine completion times is a random variable. The goal of the first problem is to minimize the expected value of the makespan of the second stage schedule, while the goal of the second problem is to maximize the expected value of the minimum completion time of the machines in the second stage solution. The goal of the third problem is to minimize the \ell_p norm for a fixed p>1, where the norm is applied on machines' completion times vectors. Each one of the first two problems admits a PTAS as Buchem et al. showed recently. Here we significantly improve all their results by designing an EPTAS for each one of these problems. We also design an EPTAS for \ell_p norm minimization for any p>1.

We consider the following generalization of the bin packing problem. We are given a set of items each of which is associated with a rational size in the interval [0,1], and a monotone non-decreasing non-negative cost function f defined over the cardinalities of the subsets of items. A feasible solution is a partition of the set of items into bins subject to the constraint that the total size of items in every bin is at most 1. Unlike bin packing, the goal function is to minimize the total cost of the bins where the cost of a bin is the value of f applied on the cardinality of the subset of items packed into the bin. We present an APTAS for this strongly NP-hard problem. We also provide a complete complexity classification of the problem with respect to the choice of f.

We study fundamental block-structured integer programs called tree-fold and multi-stage IPs. Tree-fold IPs admit a constraint matrix with independent blocks linked together by few constraints in a recursive pattern; and transposing their constraint matrix yields multi-stage IPs. The state-of-the-art algorithms to solve these IPs have an exponential gap in their running times, making it natural to ask whether this gap is inherent. We answer this question affirmative. Assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis, we prove lower bounds showing that the exponential difference is necessary, and that the known algorithms are near optimal. Moreover, we prove unconditional lower bounds on the norms of the Graver basis, a fundamental building block of all known algorithms to solve these IPs. This shows that none of the current approaches can be improved beyond this bound.

We consider non-preemptive scheduling problems on parallel identical machines where machines change their status from being available to being unavailable and vice versa along the time horizon. The particular form of unavailability we consider is when the starting time of each downtime depends upon the cardinality of the job subset processed on that machine since the previous downtime. We consider the problem of minimizing the makespan in such scenarios as well as its dual problem where we have a fixed common deadline of $1$ and the goal is to minimize the number of machines for which there is a feasible schedule. We develop an EPTAS for the first variant and an AFPTAS for the second variant.

The problem considered is the splittable bin packing with cardinality constraint. It is a variant of the bin packing problem where items are allowed to be split into parts but the number of parts in each bin is at most a given upper bound. Two versions of the splittable bin packing with cardinality constraint have been studied in the literature. Among these variants we consider the dual one where the objective is to minimize the maximum bin size while packing (may be fractional) the items to a given set of bins. We exhibit an EPTAS for the dual problem when the cardinality upper bound is part of the input. This result answers an open question raised by Epstein, Levin, and van Stee.

We present a new generalization of the bin covering problem that is known to be a strongly NP-hard problem. In our generalization there is a positive constant $\Delta$, and we are given a set of items each of which has a positive size. We would like to find a partition of the items into bins. We say that a bin is near exact covered if the total size of items packed into the bin is between $1$ and $1+\Delta$. Our goal is to maximize the number of near exact covered bins. If $\Delta=0$ or $\Delta>0$ is given as part of the input, our problem is shown here to have no approximation algorithm with a bounded asymptotic approximation ratio (assuming that $P\neq NP$). However, for the case where $\Delta>0$ is seen as a constant, we present an asymptotic fully polynomial time approximation scheme (AFPTAS) that is our main contribution.

Makespan minimization on parallel identical machines is a classical and intensively studied problem in scheduling, and a classic example for online algorithm analysis with Graham's famous list scheduling algorithm dating back to the 1960s. In this problem, jobs arrive over a list and upon an arrival, the algorithm needs to assign the job to a machine. The goal is to minimize the makespan, that is, the maximum machine load. In this paper, we consider the variant with an additional cardinality constraint: The algorithm may assign at most $k$ jobs to each machine where $k$ is part of the input. While the offline (strongly NP-hard) variant of cardinality constrained scheduling is well understood and an EPTAS exists here, no non-trivial results are known for the online variant. We fill this gap by making a comprehensive study of various different online models. First, we show that there is a constant competitive algorithm for the problem and further, present a lower bound of $2$ on the competitive ratio of any online algorithm. Motivated by the lower bound, we consider a semi-online variant where upon arrival of a job of size $p$, we are allowed to migrate jobs of total size at most a constant times $p$. This constant is called the migration factor of the algorithm. Algorithms with small migration factors are a common approach to bridge the performance of online algorithms and offline algorithms. One can obtain algorithms with a constant migration factor by rounding the size of each incoming job and then applying an ordinal algorithm to the resulting rounded instance. With this in mind, we also consider the framework of ordinal algorithms and characterize the competitive ratio that can be achieved using the aforementioned approaches., Comment: An extended abstract will appear in the proceedings of STACS'22

We consider the non-preemptive scheduling problem on identical machines where there is a parameter B and each machine in every unit length time interval can process up to B different jobs. The goal function we consider is the makespan minimization and we develop an EPTAS for this problem. Prior to our work a PTAS was known only for the case of one machine and constant values of B, and even the case of non-constant values of B on one machine was not known to admit a PTAS.

The problem considered is the non-preemptive scheduling of independent jobs that consume a resource (which is non-renewable and replenished regularly) on parallel uniformly related machines. The input defines the speed of machines, size of jobs, the quantity of resource required by the jobs, the replenished quantities, and replenishment dates of the resource. Every job can start processing only after the required quantity of the resource is allocated to the job. The objective function is the minimization of the convex combination of the makespan and an objective that is equivalent to the $l_p$-norm of the vector of loads of the machines. We present an EPTAS for this problem. Prior to our work only a PTAS was known in this non-renewable resource settings and this PTAS was only for the special case of our problem of makespan minimization on identical machines., Comment: An earlier extended abstract version appears in proceedings of WAOA'21

We consider the Ordered Open End Bin Packing problem. Items of sizes in $(0,1]$ are presented one by one, to be assigned to bins in this order. An item can be assigned to any bin for which the current total size strictly below $1$. This means also that the bin can be overloaded by its last packed item. We improve lower and upper bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratio in the online case. Specifically, we design the first algorithm whose asymptotic competitive ratio is strictly below $2$ and it is close to the lower bound. This is in contrast to the best possible absolute approximation ratio, which is equal to $2$. We also study the offline problem where the sequence of items is known in advance, while items are still assigned to bins based on their order in the sequence. For this scenario we design an asymptotic polynomial time approximation scheme.

We study here several variants of the covariates fine balance problem where we generalize some of these problems and introduce a number of others. We present here a comprehensive complexity study of the covariates problems providing polynomial time algorithms, or a proof of NP-hardness. The polynomial time algorithms described are mostly combinatorial and rely on network flow techniques. In addition we present several fixed-parameter tractable results for problems where the number of covariates and the number of levels of each covariate are seen as a parameter.

In this work, we consider online vector bin packing. It is known that no algorithm can have a competitive ratio of $o(d/\log^2 d)$ in the absolute sense, though upper bounds for this problem were always shown in the asymptotic sense. Since variants of bin packing are traditionally studied with respect to the asymptotic measure and since the two measures are different, we focus on the asymptotic measure and prove new lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratio. The existing lower bounds prior to this work were much smaller than $3$ even for very large dimensions. We significantly improve the best known lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratio (and as a byproduct, on the absolute competitive ratio) for online vector packing of vectors with $d \geq 3$ dimensions, for every such dimension $d$. To obtain these results, we use several different constructions, one of which is an adaptive construction showing a lower bound of $\Omega(\sqrt{d})$. Our main result is that the lower bound of $\Omega(d/\log^2 d)$ on the competitive ratio holds also in the asymptotic sense. The last result requires a careful adaptation of constructions for online coloring rather than simple black-box reductions., Comment: Submitted to SODA 2021

Configuration integer programs (IP) have been key in the design of algorithms for NP-hard high-multiplicity problems since the pioneering work of Gilmore and Gomory [Oper. Res., 1961]. Configuration IPs have a variable for each possible configuration, which describes a placement of items into a location, and whose value corresponds to the number of locations with that placement. In high multiplicity problems items come in types, and are represented succinctly by a vector of multiplicities; solving the configuration IP then amounts to deciding whether the input vector of multiplicities of items of each type can be decomposed into a given number of configurations. We make this implicit notion explicit by observing that the set of all input vectors decomposable into configurations forms a monoid, and solving the configuration IP is the Monoid Decomposition problem. Motivated by applications, we enrich this problem in two ways. First, sometimes each configuration additionally has an objective value, yielding an optimization problem of finding a "best" decomposition under the given objective. Second, there are often different types of configurations for different types of locations. The resulting problem is to optimize over decompositions of the input multiplicity vector into configurations of several types, and we call it Multitype Integer Monoid Optimization, or MIMO. We develop fast exact algorithms for various MIMO with few or many location types and with various objectives. Our algorithms build on a novel proximity theorem connecting the solutions of a certain configuration IP to those of its continuous relaxation. We then cast several fundamental scheduling and bin packing problems as MIMOs, and thereby obtain new or substantially faster algorithms for them. We complement our positive algorithmic results by hardness results.

We present a new generalization of the extensible bin packing with unequal bin sizes problem. In our generalization the cost of exceeding the bin size depends on the index of the bin and not only on the amount in which the size of the bin is exceeded. This generalization does not satisfy the assumptions on the cost function that were used to present the existing polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the extensible bin packing with unequal bin sizes problem. In this work, we show the existence of an efficient PTAS (EPTAS) for this new generalization and thus in particular we improve the earlier PTAS for the extensible bin packing with unequal bin sizes problem into an EPTAS. Our new scheme is based on using the shifting technique followed by a solution of polynomial number of $n$-fold programming instances. In addition, we present an asymptotic fully polynomial time approximation scheme (AFPTAS) for the related bin packing type variant of the problem.

Semi-online models where decisions may be revoked in a limited way have been studied extensively in the last years. This is motivated by the fact that the pure online model is often too restrictive to model real-world applications, where some changes might be allowed. A well-studied measure of the amount of decisions that can be revoked is the migration factor $\beta$: When an object $o$ of size $s(o)$ arrives, the decisions for objects of total size at most $\beta\cdot s(o)$ may be revoked. Usually $\beta$ should be a constant. This means that a small object only leads to small changes. This measure has been successfully investigated for different, classic problems such as bin packing or makespan minimization. The dual of makespan minimization - the Santa Claus or machine covering problem - has also been studied, whereas the dual of bin packing - the bin covering problem - has not been looked at from such a perspective. In this work, we extensively study the bin covering problem with migration in different scenarios. We develop algorithms both for the static case - where only insertions are allowed - and for the dynamic case, where items may also depart. We also develop lower bounds for these scenarios both for amortized migration and for worst-case migration showing that our algorithms have nearly optimal migration factor and asymptotic competitive ratio (up to an arbitrary small $\eps$). We therefore resolve the competitiveness of the bin covering problem with migration.

We study the general integer programming problem where the number of variables $n$ is a variable part of the input. We consider two natural parameters of the constraint matrix $A$: its numeric measure $a$ and its sparsity measure $d$. We show that integer programming can be solved in time $g(a,d)\textrm{poly}(n,L)$, where $g$ is some computable function of the parameters $a$ and $d$, and $L$ is the binary encoding length of the input. In particular, integer programming is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by $a$ and $d$, and is solvable in polynomial time for every fixed $a$ and $d$. Our results also extend to nonlinear separable convex objective functions. Moreover, for linear objectives, we derive a strongly-polynomial algorithm, that is, with running time $g(a,d)\textrm{poly}(n)$, independent of the rest of the input data. We obtain these results by developing an algorithmic framework based on the idea of iterative augmentation: starting from an initial feasible solution, we show how to quickly find augmenting steps which rapidly converge to an optimum. A central notion in this framework is the Graver basis of the matrix $A$, which constitutes a set of fundamental augmenting steps. The iterative augmentation idea is then enhanced via the use of other techniques such as new and improved bounds on the Graver basis, rapid solution of integer programs with bounded variables, proximity theorems and a new proximity-scaling algorithm, the notion of a reduced objective function, and others. As a consequence of our work, we advance the state of the art of solving block-structured integer programs. In particular, we develop near-linear time algorithms for $n$-fold, tree-fold, and $2$-stage stochastic integer programs. We show that deciding if a given vector is the degree sequence of a 3-hypergraph is NP-complete.

We improve the lower bound on the asymptotic competitive ratio of any online algorithm for bin packing to above 1.54278. We demonstrate for the first time the advantage of branching and the applicability of full adaptivity in the design of lower bounds for the classic online bin packing problem. We apply a new method for weight based analysis, which is usually applied only in proofs of upper bounds. The values of previous lower bounds were approximately 1.5401 and 1.5403.

We consider a general load balancing problem on parallel machines. Our machine environment in particular generalizes the standard models of identical machines, and the model of uniformly related machines, as well as machines with a constant number of types, and machines with activation costs. The objective functions that we consider contain in particular the makespan objective and the minimization of the $\ell_p$-norm of the vector of loads of the machines both with possibly job rejection. We consider this general model and design an efficient polynomial time approximation scheme (EPTAS) that applies for all its previously studied special cases. This EPTAS improves the current best approximation scheme for some of these cases where only a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) was known into an EPTAS.

The theory of $n$-fold integer programming has been recently emerging as an important tool in parameterized complexity. The input to an $n$-fold integer program (IP) consists of parameter $A$, dimension $n$, and numerical data of binary encoding length $L$. It was known for some time that such programs can be solved in polynomial time using $O(n^{g(A)}L)$ arithmetic operations where $g$ is an exponential function of the parameter. In 2013 it was shown that it can be solved in fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) time using $O(f(A)n^3L)$ arithmetic operations for a single-exponential function $f$. This, and a faster algorithm for a special case of combinatorial $n$-fold IP, have led to several very recent breakthroughs in the parameterized complexity of scheduling, stringology, and computational social choice. In 2015 it was shown that it can be solved in strongly polynomial time using $O(n^{g(A)})$ arithmetic operations. Here we establish a result which subsumes all three of the above results by showing that $n$-fold IP can be solved in strongly polynomial FPT time using $O(f(A)n^3)$ arithmetic operations. In fact, our results are much more general, briefly outlined as follows. - There is a strongly polynomial algorithm for ILP whenever a so-called Graver-best oracle is realizable for it. - Graver-best oracles for the large classes of multi-stage stochastic and tree-fold ILPs can be realized in FPT time. Together with the previous oracle algorithm, this newly shows two large classes of ILP to be strongly polynomial; in contrast, only few classes of ILP were previously known to be strongly polynomial. - We show that ILP is FPT parameterized by the largest coefficient $\|A\|_\infty$ and the primal or dual treedepth of $A$, and that this parameterization cannot be relaxed, signifying substantial progress in understanding the parameterized complexity of ILP.

We consider several previously studied online variants of bin packing and prove new and improved lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratios for them. For that, we use a method of fully adaptive constructions. In particular, we improve the lower bound for the asymptotic competitive ratio of online square packing significantly, raising it from roughly 1.68 to above 1.75., Comment: WAOA 2017

We revisit the classic online bin packing problem. In this problem, items of positive sizes no larger than 1 are presented one by one to be packed into subsets called "bins" of total sizes no larger than 1, such that every item is assigned to a bin before the next item is presented. We use online partitioning of items into classes based on sizes, as in previous work, but we also apply a new method where items of one class can be packed into more than two types of bins, where a bin type is defined according to the number of such items grouped together. Additionally, we allow the smallest class of items to be packed in multiple kinds of bins, and not only into their own bins. We combine this with the approach of packing of sufficiently big items according to their exact sizes. Finally, we simplify the analysis of such algorithms, allowing the analysis to be based on the most standard weight functions. This simplified analysis allows us to study the algorithm which we defined based on all these ideas. This leads us to the design and analysis of the first algorithm of asymptotic competitive ratio strictly below 1.58, specifically, we break this barrier and provide an algorithm AH (Advanced Harmonic) whose asymptotic competitive ratio does not exceed 1.5783.

We introduce and study the problem of optimizing arbitrary functions over degree sequences of hypergraphs and multihypergraphs. We show that over multihypergraphs the problem can be solved in polynomial time. For hypergraphs, we show that deciding if a given sequence is the degree sequence of a 3-hypergraph is NP-complete, thereby solving a 30 year long open problem. This implies that optimization over hypergraphs is hard already for simple concave functions. In contrast, we show that for graphs, if the functions at vertices are the same, then the problem is polynomial time solvable. We also provide positive results for convex optimization over multihypergraphs and graphs and exploit connections to degree sequence polytopes and threshold graphs. We then elaborate on connections to the emerging theory of shifted combinatorial optimization.

Shifted combinatorial optimization is a new nonlinear optimization framework, which is a broad extension of standard combinatorial optimization, involving the choice of several feasible solutions at a time. It captures well studied and diverse problems ranging from congestive to partitioning problems. In particular, every standard combinatorial optimization problem has its shifted counterpart, which is typically much harder. Here we initiate a study of approximation algorithms for this broad optimization framework.

In graph coloring problems, the goal is to assign a positive integer color to each vertex of an input graph such that adjacent vertices do not receive the same color assignment. For classic graph coloring, the goal is to minimize the maximum color used, and for the sum coloring problem, the goal is to minimize the sum of colors assigned to all input vertices. In the offline variant, the entire graph is presented at once, and in online problems, one vertex is presented for coloring at each time, and the only information is the identity of its neighbors among previously known vertices. In batched graph coloring, vertices are presented in k batches, for a fixed integer k > 1, such that the vertices of a batch are presented as a set, and must be colored before the vertices of the next batch are presented. This last model is an intermediate model, which bridges between the two extreme scenarios of the online and offline models. We provide several results, including a general result for sum coloring and results for the classic graph coloring problem on restricted graph classes: We show tight bounds for any graph class containing trees as a subclass (e.g., forests, bipartite graphs, planar graphs, and perfect graphs), and a surprising result for interval graphs and k = 2, where the value of the (strict and asymptotic) competitive ratio depends on whether the graph is presented with its interval representation or not.

Cardinality constrained bin packing or bin packing with cardinality constraints is a basic bin packing problem. In the online version with the parameter k \geq 2, items having sizes in (0,1] associated with them are presented one by one to be packed into unit capacity bins, such that the capacities of bins are not exceeded, and no bin receives more than k items. We resolve the online problem in the sense that we prove a lower bound of 2 on the overall asymptotic competitive ratio. This closes this long standing open problem, since an algorithm of an absolute competitive ratio 2 is known. Additionally, we significantly improve the known lower bounds on the asymptotic competitive ratio for every specific value of k. The novelty of our constructions is based on full adaptivity that creates large gaps between item sizes. Thus, our lower bound inputs do not follow the common practice for online bin packing problems of having a known in advance input consisting of batches for which the algorithm needs to be competitive on every prefix of the input.

Though competitive analysis is often a very good tool for the analysis of online algorithms, sometimes it does not give any insight and sometimes it gives counter-intuitive results. Much work has gone into exploring other performance measures, in particular targeted at what seems to be the core problem with competitive analysis: the comparison of the performance of an online algorithm is made to a too powerful adversary. We consider a new approach to restricting the power of the adversary, by requiring that when judging a given online algorithm, the optimal offline algorithm must perform as well as the online algorithm, not just on the entire final request sequence, but also on any prefix of that sequence. This is limiting the adversary's usual advantage of being able to exploit that it knows the sequence is continuing beyond the current request. Through a collection of online problems, including machine scheduling, bin packing, dual bin packing, and seat reservation, we investigate the significance of this particular offline advantage., Comment: IMADA-preprint-cs

We show that finding lexicographically minimal $n$ bases in a matroid can be done in polynomial time in the oracle model. This follows from a more general result that the shifted problem over a matroid can be solved in polynomial time as well.

We study classic scheduling problems on uniformly related machines. Efficient polynomial time approximation schemes (EPTAS's) are fast and practical approximation schemes. New methods and techniques are essential in developing such improved approximation schemes, and their design is a primary goal of this research agenda. We present EPTAS's for the scheduling problem of a set of jobs on uniformly related machines so as to minimize the total weighted completion time, both for the case with release dates and its special case without release dates. These problems are NP-hard in the strong sense, and therefore EPTAS's are the best possible approximation schemes unless P=NP. Previously, only PTAS's were known for these two problems, while an EPTAS was known only for the special case of identical machines without release dates.
