Tangshan is known as a typical heavy industrial city with serious atmospheric pollution. It suffers the most serious atmospheric pollution during the winter heating period. This study aims to explore the level and spatial distribution of atmospheric element deposition in the study area and validate the suitability of Ramalina sinensis (RSI) as an active biomonitor in North China cities. RSI was transplanted to Tangshan in winter (Dec. 2016- Mar. 2017) and exposed for 17 weeks. The concentration of 51 elements was tested using an ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer). The results showed that the exposure concentration of all elements but Ag was significantly higher than the background value. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that K, P, and Rb were separated into the group G5, and these nutrients have a lower level of bioaccumulation than other groups. The remaining 47 elements were classified into groups G1 (Al, Be, Co, Cr, Cs, Ge, Li, Nb, Ni, Si, Th, Ti, U, V, and 16 rare earth elements La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y, and Sc) of crustal origin, G2 (Ca, Cd, Cu, Mg, Mn, Mo, S, Sb, Sr, and Zn) and G3 (Bi, Pb, and Sn) of atmospheric origin, and G4 (As, Fe, Se, and Tl) of crustal-atmospheric origin. The overall bioaccumulation in Tangshan is moderate (PLIzone = 2.010 for the combined groups G1-4), with the highest bioaccumulation level (high to severe) for the atmospheric group G2. The most concerned elements are Ca and S, which are of high bioaccumulation at the regional scale. All element groups show a similar spatial pattern characterized by decreasing atmospheric deposition from east to west and from rural to urban areas. These results indicate that RSI is a good active biomonitor for most elements, barring some nutrients. The importance of G2 elements should be emphasized as an indicator of anthropogenic emissions in lichen-active biomonitoring techniques in North China cities. The study area experienced a certain degree of atmospheric pollution, contributed mainly by the frequent industrial and agricultural activities and coal combustion for heating in the east of the city and the rural areas around. The analysis of the interaction between main bionts (mycobiont and photobiont) in the lichen symbiosis delivers substantial information about their preferences in the selection of symbiotic partners, and their ecological preferences. The selectivity in the Parmelia genus has been defined as strong so far. However, data on this lichen genus, which includes several widely distributed species, are biogeographically limited. Therefore, using specialization indicators and extended sampling, in this study, we estimated the interactions between the main bionts of selected Parmelia spp., using two levels of estimation (species/OTU and haplotype). A comparison of mycobiont-photobiont interactions at different levels showed that considering only mycobiont species and Trebouxia OTUs, greater specialization is found, while Parmelia species studied in this work present a more generalistic strategy in photobiont choice when haplotypes are considered. Despite the uneven sampling of Parmelia species, the interpretation of specialization within species and individuals of the genus leads to a more precise and accurate interpretation of their adaptation strategies. Furthermore, the data from P. sulcata indicate the existence of a different pool of compatible haplotypes in some geographical regions compared to neighboring areas. A significant part of our stone heritage is made of limestone. Researchers are increasingly concerned about the risk of biodeterioration of these important objects. In this article, we present an up-to-date review of the microbial diversity of biodeteriorated limestone cultural heritage (CHL). This is based on an extensive bibliographic search of the literature investigating biodiversity using culture-dependent (CD) and culture-independent (CI) techniques. In the case of the former, only articles in which microorganisms were identified using molecular tools that generate DNA sequences were selected, with the aim of providing traceable identification based on the sequences submitted to public databases. The literature search resulted in the selection of 50 articles published between 2004 and 2023. The biodiversity data obtained from the CHL were organized into the following groups: fungi (626 records), bacteria and cyanobacteria (786 and 103 records, respectively), algae (51 records), and archaea (27 records). Within each group, the microbial diversity studied was compared according to results obtained using CD and CI techniques. Of all the articles selected, 12 used both approaches, demonstrating the growing effort to discover the total microbiome of biodeteriorated cultural heritage assets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new spiroterpenoid, namely tinctorin (1), along with one known compound, norreticulatin (2), were isolated from the lichen Parmotrema tinctorum (Despr. ex Nyl.) Hale. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. The absolute configuration of 2 was established for the first time. Biocrusts represent associations of lichens, green algae, cyanobacteria, fungi and other microorganisms, colonizing soils in varying proportions of principally arid biomes. The so-called grit crust represents a recently discovered type of biocrust situated in the Coastal Range of the Atacama Desert (Chile) made of microorganisms growing on and in granitoid pebbles, resulting in a checkerboard pattern visible to the naked eye on the landscape scale. This specific microbiome fulfills a broad range of ecosystem services, all probably driven by fog and dew-induced photosynthetic activity of mainly micro-lichens. To understand its biodiversity and impact, we applied a polyphasic approach on the phototrophic microbiome of this biocrust, combining isolation and characterization of the lichen photobionts, multi-gene phylogeny of the photobionts and mycobionts based on a direct sequencing and microphotography approach, metabarcoding and determination of chlorophylla+b contents. Metabarcoding showed that yet undescribed lichens within the Caliciaceae dominated the biocrust together with Trebouxia as the most abundant eukaryote in all plots. Together with high mean chlorophylla+b contents exceeding 410 mg m−2, this distinguished the symbiotic algae Trebouxia as the main driver of the grit crust ecosystem. The trebouxioid photobionts could be assigned to the I (T. impressa/gelatinosa) and A (T. arboricola) clades and represented several lineages containing five potential species candidates, which were identified based on the unique phylogenetic position, morphological features, and developmental cycles of the corresponding isolates. These results designate the grit crust as the only known coherent soil layer with significant landscape covering impact of at least 440 km2, predominantly ruled by a single symbiotic algal genus. Background: Lichens are micro-ecosystems relying on diverse microorganisms for nutrient cycling, environmental adaptation, and structural support. We investigated the spatial-scale dependency of factors shaping the ecological processes that govern lichen-associated bacteria. We hypothesize that lichens function as island-like habitats hosting divergent microbiomes and promoting landscape gamma-diversity. Three microenvironments —thalli, substrates, and neighboring soils— were sampled from four geographically overlapping species of Peltigera cyanolichens, spanning three bioclimatic zones in the Chilean Patagonia, to determine how bacterial diversity, assembly processes, ecological drivers, interaction patterns, and niche breadth vary among Peltigera microenvironments on a broad geographical scale. Results: The hosts' phylogeny, especially that of the cyanobiont, alongside climate as a secondary factor, impose a strong ecological filtering of bacterial communities within Peltigera thalli. This results in deterministically assembled, low diverse, and phylogenetically convergent yet structurally divergent bacterial communities. Host evolutionary and geographic distances accentuate the divergence in bacterial community composition of Peltigera thalli. Compared to soil and substrate, Peltigera thalli harbor specialized and locally adapted bacterial taxa, conforming sparse and weak ecological networks. Conclusions: The findings suggest that Petigera thalli create fragmented habitats that foster landscape bacterial gamma-diversity. Sterols play important structural and regulatory roles in numerous intracellular processes. Unlike animals, plants contain a distinctive and diverse variety of sterols. Recently, information has emerged showing that stigmasterol is a "stress sterol". Stigmasterol is synthesized via the mevalonate biosynthesis pathway and has structural similarity to β-sitosterol but differs in the presence of a trans-oriented double bond in the side chain. In plants, the accumulation of stigmasterol has been observed in response to various stresses. However, the precise ways that stigmasterol is involved in the stress responses of plants remain unclear. This comprehensive review provides an update on the biology of stigmasterol, particularly the physicochemical properties of this ethylsterol, its biosynthesis, and its occurrence in higher plants and extremophilic organisms, e.g., mosses and lichens. Special emphasis is given to the evolutionary aspects of stigmasterol biosynthesis, particularly the variations in the gene structure of C22-sterol desaturase, which catalyzes the formation of stigmasterol from β-sitosterol, in a diversity of evolutionarily distant organisms. The roles of stigmasterol in the tolerance of plants to hostile environments and the prospects for its biomedical applications are also discussed. Taken together, the available data suggest that stigmasterol plays important roles in plant metabolism, although in some aspects, it remains an enigmatic compound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of dust pollution on the photosynthesis and respiration parameters of foliose lichens Hypogimnia physodes (L.) Nyl, Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. and Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd., collected near the bauxite mine (Komi Republic, Russia) was investigated. Microscopic analysis showed that fine dust particles were mainly on the thalli surface, with a few mineral inclusions in the thalli medulla. The deposition of dust particles caused significant changes in the optical properties of the lichen surface in the visible and infrared spectral regions. A number of spectral indices (BRI, REP, RES, WI) sensitive to lichen pollution by dust emissions from the bauxite mine were identified due changes in the reflectance spectra of the thalli. Shading of the algal layer by mineral particles deposited on the thalli surface did not affect the content of photosynthetic pigments and PS II photochemical activity parameters. At the same time, lichen CO2-exchange parameters were observed to change. Lichen thalli from the polluted area were characterized by lower values of net CO2 uptake in the moderate light conditions (150 µmol PAR/m2 s), and the proportion of dark respiration in the gas exchange was 1.5 to 2 times higher than the values for thalli from background site. A 2-fold decrease in cytochrome respiration capacity was observed in thalli from the affected area. In thalli of L. pulmonaria and P. aphthosa, the energetically inefficient alternative respiratory pathway capacity increased 1.5‑fold and in H. physodes the activity of residual respiration increased more than 3.5-fold. The results obtained allowed an assessment of the chronic dust pollution effects on the foliose lichens symbionts functioning. The data may be useful for environmental biomonitoring. Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) can thrive under environmental conditions that are stressful for vascular plants such as high temperatures and/or extremely low moisture availability. In these settings, and in the absence of disturbance, cover of biocrusts commonly exceeds cover of vascular plants. Arid landscapes are also typically slow to recover from disturbance and prone to altered vegetation and invasion by exotic species. In the sagebrush ecosystems, cover of annual, exotic, invasive grasses are lower where cover of biocrusts and vascular plants are greater, suggesting that biocrusts play a role in helping arid sites avoid conversion to dominance by invasive grasses. The conceptual framework for assessing ecological resistance and resilience (R&R) is used across the region to estimate the risk of invasion by annual grasses and the likelihood of recovery of native plants following disturbance. However, this framework does not currently account for biocrusts. We used data collected by the Bureau of Land Management Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring program to relate biocrusts, specifically the presence of lichens and mosses, to the R&R framework. Lichens frequently occur on warm, dry sites, classified as lower R&R. Mosses frequently occur on sites classified as moderate or moderately low R&R. Without management practices that favor biocrusts in low‐moderate R&R, these areas may be more vulnerable to transitioning from being dominated by shrubs to annual grasses. Under climate change scenarios, the area occupied by lower R&R sites is likely to increase, suggesting that the role of biocrusts in maintaining site resistance to invasion may also increase. Restoring biological crust (biocrust) in disturbed drylands is challenging due to the difficult environmental conditions, such as limited soil moisture, low soil nutrients, and extreme temperatures, that impede growth. Understanding how the key components of biocrust—mosses, lichens, and cyanobacteria—react to different environmental factors informs the optimal timing, locations, and species composition for biocrust reintroduction, thereby increasing the likelihood of establishment. Here, we inoculated soils with a diverse range of biocrust organisms, analogous to seeding an area with diverse vascular plant seeds, and varied environmental conditions to observe how these changes influenced the development and functions of reintroduced biocrust. We found that by manipulating soil texture and time spent wet, we can change the proportional cover of biocrust within a restoration‐like setting. Specifically, we found that 4 months after inoculation, finer textured soils that received more water become dominated by moss cover, while coarser textured soils with less water remained dominated by cyanobacteria cover, and the interactions between texture and time spent wet strongly influenced cover. We found biocrust morphological group cover had a small, but detectable, effect on ecosystem functions (soil stability and nitrogenase activity, a proxy for nitrogen fixation), but that environmental conditions had a stronger impact on the functions we measured. Manipulative experiments in controlled environments, like this one, can help elucidate the mechanisms underlying the establishment rate and patterns of biocrusts post‐inoculation, and inform implementation of inoculations in the field. Three species of the genus Psora are recognized in India including Psora crenata (Taylor) Reinke, P. decipiens (Hedw.) Hoffm. and P. himalayana (C. Bab.) Timdal. Among them, P. crenata is described as a new record to the lichen biota of India. The paper presents the first-ever report of lichens from Sholayar 10 ha permanent plot, with a total of 38 species under 23 genera and 14 families. Of these, one species, Allographa cinerea (Fée) Lücking and Kalb reported as new to India, and nine species namely Coenogonium dilucidum (Kremp.) Kalb and Lücking, Crypthonia albida (Fée) Frisch, Enterographa divergens (Müll. Arg.) Redinger, Graphis indica J. Kalb and Kalb, Malmidea fuscella (Müll. Arg.) Kalb and Lücking, Malmidea piae (Kalb) Kalb, Malmidea subgranifera (Kalb and Elix) Kalb and Elix, and Porina subinterstes (Nyl.) Müll. Arg. as new distributional records to Kerala. A new depsidone, parmoferone A (1), together with three known compounds, parmosidone K (2), albifolione (3), and 4-chloroorcinol (4) were isolated from the lichen Parmotrema cristiferum (Taylor) Hale (Parmeliaceae). The structures of isolated compounds were identified from its spectroscopic data and by comparison with the literature. Compounds 1-4 were evaluated for alpha-glucosidase inhibition. This paper documents the occurrence of the genus Umbilicaria in the Argentine Islands–Kyiv Peninsula region of the Graham Coast in the maritime Antarctic. The presence of seven Umbilicaria species (U. africana, U. antarctica, U. aprina, U. decussata, U. kappenii, U. nylanderiana and U. umbilicarioides) in the ice-free areas of the Argentine Islands–Kyiv Peninsula region were confirmed. The species of U. africana and U. aprina are documented from the studied region for the first time. This study moves the southern distribution limit of U. africana about 300 km to the south: to the Argentine Islands–Kyiv Peninsula region. Lichens are recognized as highly efficient biological indicators of air pollution. They have been extensively used to detect various types of air pollutants, both from outdoor and indoor sources. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) is known to be hazardous not only to its consumers but also to passive consumers, particularly within buildings. This study aims to explore the detection of ETS using lichens within a building in Malaysia. The research was conducted in a public building in Selangor, Malaysia, employing the lichen species Usnea misaminensis. The transplanting technique was utilized, and the nicotine concentration and lichen vitality rate were analyzed. The study demonstrated that lichens can serve as effective biological indicators of indoor air pollutants, specifically nicotine. Additionally, a significant negative relationship (r = -0.71) was found between the lichen vitality rate and nicotine concentrations in the lichen samples placed in the building. This indicates that higher nicotine concentrations in the lichens after approximately 2 months of exposure correspond to lower lichen vitality rates. Research into nicotine detection using lichens may lead to the development of novel monitoring techniques for indoor air quality assessment. Integrating lichenbased sensors into portable monitoring devices or passive sampling systems could provide cost-effective and non-intrusive methods for continuously monitoring nicotine levels in buildings. Diorygma sp. is a native crustose-lichen in Vietnam. A mycobiont of this lichen was isolated, then cultivated. The present study described the isolation and structural elucidation of two new guaiane-type sesquiterpenes, namely diorygmones A-B. Their absolute chemical structures were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR analysis, high-resolution mass spectroscopy, electronic circular dichroism (ECD), and comparisons with the literatures. Despite their ecological significance, non‐vascular photoautotrophs (NVPs) are frequently excluded from ecological experimental studies, leading to a limited comprehension of how their communities are affected by the ecosystem dynamics and an underestimation of their role in ecosystem functioning. We studied the impact of vascular plant taxonomic and functional diversity on three groups of ground NVPs (lichens, bryophytes, and cyanobacteria) within one of the longest‐running plant biodiversity experiments (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve). Utilizing the permanent plot framework of this experiment, we analyzed the effects of almost 30 years of treatment across various levels of vascular plant taxonomic and functional diversity on NVPs. For each diversity level we documented NVP cover and richness. Using generalized linear models we evaluated the effect of vascular plant taxonomic and functional diversity, as well as environmental factors affected by vascular diversity (such as vascular plant cover, light penetration, soil nutrient content, and microtopography) on NVP richness and cover. Using these models, we conducted structural equation modeling analyses (SEM) that allowed us to differentiate the direct and indirect impacts of vascular plant taxonomic and functional diversity on NVPs. Our results showed that both lichen and bryophyte richness and cover decreased with higher vascular plant taxonomic and functional diversity, while cyanobacteria cover increased as a function of the same parameters. We also showed that microtopography serves as better predictor for lichens and bryophytes, while nutrient‐related factors perform better as predictors for cyanobacteria. Additionally, our findings indicate that NVP cover ranged from 0.001% to 100% (mean 15%) in the surveyed plots, representing a major, still ignored, component of the experimental plots. This study shows that vascular plant diversity directly and indirectly affects NVP communities, but the consequences of these effects at community and ecosystem levels are still to be explored. Background: Lichens, traditionally considered as a simple partnership primarily between mycobiont and photobiont, are, in reality, complex holobionts comprised of a multitude of microorganisms. Lichen mycobiome represents fungal community residing within lichen thalli. While it is acknowledged that factors like the host lichen species and environmental conditions influence the structure of the lichen mycobiome, the existing research remains insufficient. To investigate which factor, host genus or location, has a greater impact on the lichen mycobiome, we conducted a comparative analysis of mycobiomes within Parmelia and Peltigera collected from both Turkey and South Korea, using high-throughput sequencing based on internal transcribed spacer region amplification. Results: Overall, the lichen mycobiome was dominated by Capnodiales (Dothideomycetes), regardless of host or location. At the order level, the taxonomic composition was not significantly different according to lichen genus host or geographical distance. Hierarchical clustering of the top 100 abundant ASVs did not clearly indicate whether the lichen mycobiome was more influenced by host genus or location. Analyses of community similarity and partitioning variables revealed that the structure of the lichen mycobiome is more significantly influenced by location than by host genus. When analyzing the core mycobiome by host genus, the Peltigera mycobiome contained more ASV members than the Parmelia mycobiome. These two core mycobiomes also share common fungal strains, including basidiomycete yeast. Additionally, we used chi-squared tests to identify host genus-specialists and location-specialists. Conclusions: By comparing lichen mycobiomes of the same genera across different countries, our study advances our comprehension of these microbial communities. Our study elucidates that, although host species play a contributory role, geographic distance exerts a more pronounced impact on the structure of lichen mycobiome. We have made foundational contributions to understanding the lichen mycobiome occupying ecologically crucial niches. Questions: The alpine vegetation of the Alps is particularly vulnerable to climate change, as the temperature increase in this region is twice the global average and the available area for new colonisations decreases with increasing elevation. While numerous studies have investigated the response of vascular plants to a warming climate in the alpine belt, only a handful have investigated that of cryptogams in the European Alps. Based on a 21‐year monitoring project, we assessed the effects of climate change on cryptogams along elevation, from the treeline to the subnival belt. Location: Four GLORIA summits in Valais (Switzerland). Methods: Between 2001 and 2022, terricolous lichens and bryophytes (from 2008) were inventoried in 52 1‐m2 plots distributed across four summits: 2360 m a.s.l. (treeline), 2550 m (lower alpine), 2990 m (upper alpine) and 3210 m (subnival). Changes in species cover and richness were analysed using generalised linear mixed‐effects model (GLMMs). Results: For bryophytes, total cover remained stable overall. However, six species declined significantly between 2008 and 2022, and the species richness decreased after 2015. For terricolous lichens, total cover significantly increased on the lower alpine summit, while species richness increased on the upper alpine and subnival summits. Conclusions: Bryophytes have probably suffered from the increasingly dry conditions, with a succession of very warm and dry summers over the last decades. Terricolous lichens have taken advantage of the warmer conditions to increase their cover on the lower alpine summit, and new species have colonised the upper summits. However, as they compete with vascular plants for soil and light, they may suffer from shrub and tree encroachment in the future and will be limited upwards by the rarity of developed soils. In this study, we investigated the anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities of the cosmopolite macrolichens Usnea articulata (L.) Hoffm., Umbilicaria crustulosa (Ach.) Lamy and Bryoria fuscescens (Gyeln.) Brodo & D.Hawksw hydroalcoholic extracts to contribute the potential pharmacological uses of lichens. In vitro antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, and the yeast Candida albicans were presented using the Broth microdilution method. The most effective lichen extract against gram-positive bacteria S. aureus was U. articulata ethanol extract with a MIC value of 0.125 mg/ml. U. articulata and B. fuscences extracts have similar anti-fungal activities despite having MIC values of 0.5 mg/ml. The anti-inflammatory effects of the extracts on Lipopolysaccharide/Interferon-gamma (LPS/IF-γ) induced macrophage-like cellular systems (BV-2 microglia and RAW 264,7 macrophages) were evaluated by measuring P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphorylation (P38MAPK), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) mRNA and protein expression. Especially, Usnea and Umbilicaria extracts also attenuated the LPS/IF-γ induced increase in P38MAPK phosphorylation, COX-2, and NOS2 expression in both macrophage-like cells without any cytotoxicity. According to the results of our study, we suggest that the anti-inflammatory mechanism of lichen extracts might result from the inhibition of P38MAPK phosphorylation through a reduction in COX-2 and NOS2 expressions. Four species of lichens were reported as new to Lithuania: Flavoplaca arcis, Kuettlingeria teicholyta, Ramalina europaea, Xanthoria calcicola. Of these, two calcicolous lichens, Kuettlingeria teicholyta and Flavoplaca arcis, were recorded for the first time in the Baltic States. Two species, namely Cladonia turgida and Peltigera aphthosa, previously considered extinct, were re-found after more than 50 years in Lithuania. Ecophysiological studies of lichens in tropical Asia are rare, and additional studies can increase the understanding of lichen life in this region. The main aim of this study was to observe the relationships between water availability and photosynthetic parameters, as well as hydration trait parameters, in macrolichens during the rainy and dry seasons in a tropical forest. A total of 11 lichen species growing in a lower montane rainforest in Thailand were collected and studied. The results clearly showed that the specific thallus mass (STM), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), the potential quantum yield of primary photochemistry (Fv/Fm), chlorophyll content, and carotenoid content of almost all lichens were lower in the dry season than in the rainy season. Field measurements in the dry season revealed that only the foliose chlorolichen Parmotrema tinctorum was metabolically active and exhibited slight carbon assimilation. In the rainy season, all lichens started their photosynthesis in the early morning, reached maximal values, declined, and ceased when the thalli desiccated. The photosynthetically active period of the lichens was approximately 2–3 h in the morning, and the activities of the cyanolichens ended approximately 30 min after the chlorolichens. The hydration trait parameters, including the STM, maximal water content (WCmax), and water holding capacity (WHC), were greater in the cyanolichens. In addition, the maximal Pn (Pnmax) and optimal water content (WCopt) for Pn were also greater in the cyanolichens, but the maximal Fv/Fm (Fv/Fmmax) was lower. The cyanolichens compensated for their inability to use humid air to restore photosynthesis by having higher water content and storage, higher photosynthetic rates, and longer photosynthetically active periods. This research presents the contents of K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, and Pb in lichen and moss samples used as biomonitors of air pollution collected in Ulaanbaatar city. X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) methods were used, employing for excitation a Pd X‐ray tube with a molybdenum secondary target. Matrix effects were corrected by the use of normalization for the coherent and incoherent scattered peak, in this way the determination is more efficient. For quality control of the results, comparisons were made with results from other certified laboratories. No significant differences were found between the different techniques. The elemental distribution patterns obtained for each metal were associated with different pollution sources, thus contributing to the assessment of air pollution in Ulaanbaatar. Nordaustlandet is the northernmost and one of the most inaccessible regions of Svalbard. The lichens of the Nordaustlandet were studied most actively from the mid-nineteenth century to the 40 s of the twentieth century. It was during this period that significant collections of lichens were collected, which still form the basis for some taxonomic studies. Thanks to large-scale research conducted by the Avrorin Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute of the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 3 years (2010–2012), we were able to make a significant contribution to the knowledge of Nordaustlandet lichens. The study of the lichen biota of Murchisonfjorden prompted us to summarise all the information about the lichens and lichenophilous fungi of Nordaustlandet, as well as to evaluate the degree of detection of the lichen flora. The checklist includes 477 lichen species, 2 subspecies and 22 species and one subspecies of lichenicolous fungi, of which Calogaya bryochrysion, Diplotomma lutosum, Flavoplaca flavocitrina, Lecanora intumescens and Zwackhiomyces coepulonus are reported for the first time for the Svalbard archipelago and another 40 species—for Nordaustlandet. The richest in terms of the number of species is Gustav V Land (415 species and two subspecies of lichens and 18 species and one subspecies of lichenicolous fungi). An assessment of lichen biota diversity using an integrated approach based on Hill numbers showed that the data cover a maximum of 80.93% of the total number of lichen species in the study area. Background and Aims There is growing interest in the functional ecology of poikilohydric non-vascular photoautotrophs (NVPs), including 'cryptogamic' bryophytes and lichens. These organisms are structurally important in many ecosystems, contributing substantially to ecosystem function and services, while also being sensitive to climate change. Previous research has quantified the climate change response of poikilohydric NVPs using predictive bioclimatic models with standard climate variables including precipitation totals and temperature averages. This study aimed for an improved functional understanding of their climate change response based on their growth rate sensitivity to moisture and light. Methods We conducted a 24-month experiment to monitor lichen hydration and growth. We accounted for two well-known features in the ecology of poikilohydric NVPs, and exemplified here for a structurally dominant lichen epiphyte, Lobaria pulmonaria : (1) sensitivity to multiple sources of atmospheric moisture including rain, condensed dew-formation and water vapour; and (2) growth determined by the amount of time hydrated in the light, driving photosynthesis, referred to as the I wet hypothesis. Key Results First, we found that even within an oceanic high-rainfall environment, lichen hydration was better explained by vapour pressure deficit than precipitation totals. Second, growth at a monthly resolution was positively related to the amount of time spent hydrated in the light, and negatively related to the amount of time spent hydrated in the dark. Conclusions Using multimodel averaging to project growth models for an ensemble of future climate change scenarios, we demonstrated reduced net growth for L. pulmonaria by the late 21st century, explained by extended climate dryness and lichen desiccation for periods when there is otherwise sufficient light to drive photosynthesis. The results further emphasize a key issue of photoperiodism when constructing functionally relevant models to understand the risk of climate change, especially for poikilohydric NVPs. Aim: Climate warming is shifting the bioclimatic optima of species towards mountaintops, but the ability of organisms to track these changes also depends on their dispersal skills. Here, we assessed the role of dispersal over niche‐driven processes in connecting assemblages along mountain slopes and between mountain massifs. Location: Cantabrian Mountains, Spain. Taxon: Birds (Animalia; Aves) and Lichens (Fungi; Ascomycota, Basidiomycota). Methods: We examined the change with elevation of community‐level traits that are dispersal proxies (wing shape in birds and type of dispersing propagule in lichens) and ecological niche proxies (micro‐habitat, substrate, and foraging features). We then permutate species composition within sites and massifs to create models of species distribution constrained by dispersal and niche processes. These models were compared with observed species distribution to disclose the relative contribution of dispersal and niche‐based processes in the biotic interchange along mountain slopes (vertical connectivity) and between isolated summits (horizontal connectivity). Results: Both bird and lichen communities were formed by species with traits that enhance dispersal at high elevations. These groups also showed similarities in the elevational patterns of niche diversity, which dropped at high elevations. Dispersal was by far the dominant assembly mechanism in both taxa. Pairwise community comparisons among elevation belts showed weak vertical connectivity, with predominant dispersal limitations but also niche barriers between the extremes of the gradient. Among massifs, horizontal connectivity was higher among high mountain assemblages than those from lower elevations. Main Conclusion: Dispersal was found to be the dominant assembly mechanism in mountain systems, even in taxa with high dispersal potential. Highland assemblages had low functional diversity but their species had high mobility. This permits biotic interchange between isolated summits and, potentially, colonization of other summits as climate warms. Our framework combining traits and occurrence‐permutation models improve the understanding of community assembly mechanisms along elevation gradients and points to dispersal limitations, especially at low‐middle elevations. The richness, composition, abundance, and correlation with the atmospheric oxide concentrations of the community of corticolous lichens in the urban and peri-urban areas of the city of Ibagué (Colombia) were evaluated, selecting 25 individuals of the four most abundant phorophyte species. Twenty-nine lichen taxa grouped in 13 families and 17 genera were recorded, with a higher lichen coverage and taxa richness in the urban area. A non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis showed the conformation of two lichen communities associated with the urban and peri-urban areas of the city, and variation in composition among the phorophyte species. Exclusive and indicator taxa were found for both zones, as well as associations between variables through the application of a general linear model. Higher concentrations of atmospheric gases CO, SO2, NO2, and O3 were found in the urban zone, and positive/negative relationships with some lichen taxa. There is high variability in the response of the lichen assemblage of urban and peri-urban ecosystems to environmental effects, with substantial or minimal changes in the variables of richness, coverage, and phorophyte association, and according to their interaction with atmospheric oxides, the patterns of potential tolerant and/or sensitive species are formed for their implementation in bioindication studies. Acarospora socialis, the bright cobblestone lichen, is commonly found in southwestern North America. This charismatic yellow lichen is a species of key ecological significance as it is often a pioneer species in new environments. Despite their ecological importance virtually no research has been conducted on the genomics of A. socialis. To address this, we used long-read sequencing to generate the first high-quality draft genome of A. socialis. Lichen thallus tissue was collected from Pinkham Canyon in Joshua Tree National Park, California and deposited in the UC Riverside herbarium under accession #295874. The de novo assembly of the mycobiont partner of the lichen was generated from Pacific Biosciences HiFi long reads and Dovetail Omni-C chromatin capture data. After removing algal and bacterial contigs, the fungal genome was approximately 31.2 Mb consisting of 38 scaffolds with contig and scaffold N50 of 2.4 Mb. The BUSCO completeness score of the assembled genome was 97.5% using the Ascomycota gene set. Information on the genome of A. socialis is important for California conservation purposes given that this lichen is threatened in some places locally by wildfires due to climate change. This reference genome will be used for understanding the genetic diversity, population genomics, and comparative genomics of A. socialis species. Genomic resources for this species will support population and landscape genomics investigations, exploring the use of A. socialis as a bioindicator species for climate change, and in studies of adaptation by comparing populations that occur across aridity gradients in California.

Abstract Biocrusts represent associations of lichens, green algae, cyanobacteria, fungi and other microorganisms, colonizing soils in varying proportions of principally arid biomes. The so-called grit crust represents a recently discovered type of biocrust situated in the Coastal Range of the Atacama Desert (Chile) made of microorganisms growing on and in granitoid pebbles, resulting in a checkerboard pattern visible to the naked eye on the landscape scale. This specific microbiome fulfills a broad range of ecosystem services, all probably driven by fog and dew-induced photosynthetic activity of mainly micro-lichens. To understand its biodiversity and impact, we applied a polyphasic approach on the phototrophic microbiome of this biocrust, combining isolation and characterization of the lichen photobionts, multi-gene phylogeny of the photobionts and mycobionts based on a direct sequencing and microphotography approach, metabarcoding and determination of chlorophylla+b contents. Metabarcoding showed that yet undescribed lichens within the Caliciaceae dominated the biocrust together with Trebouxia as the most abundant eukaryote in all plots. Together with high mean chlorophylla+b contents exceeding 410 mg m−2, this distinguished the symbiotic algae Trebouxia as the main driver of the grit crust ecosystem. The trebouxioid photobionts could be assigned to the I (T. impressa/gelatinosa) and A (T. arboricola) clades and represented several lineages containing five potential species candidates, which were identified based on the unique phylogenetic position, morphological features, and developmental cycles of the corresponding isolates. These results designate the grit crust as the only known coherent soil layer with significant landscape covering impact of at least 440 km2, predominantly ruled by a single symbiotic algal genus.

Two isidiate species, Sticta arenosella and S. cellulosa , are reported from South America for the first time and the former species also as new to Southern Hemisphere. Sticta arenosella was found in Chile and S. celulosa in Bolivia. The identification of both species was confirmed by sequencing of the nuITS rDNA marker, a universal barcode of fungi, and the haplotype network analyses. Specimen of S. celulosa possess sparse apothecia, which previously have not been observed in this species.

Two new species of the lichen genus Lecaimmeria are described and illustrated from Pakistan, namely, Lecaimmeria asiatica and L. crispula. The former taxon is characterized by pale brown to dark brown thallus, up to 2-mm large areoles, flat to strongly convex apothecial disc, taller hymenium 120–150 µm, apically branched, not anastomosing paraphyses, large conidia 5–7 × 1.1–1.4 µm, with respect to ecology, and the absence of secondary metabolites, whereas L. crispula can be characterized by having a light brown to chocolate brown thallus, apothecia having flat to slightly concave discs with wavy margins that curl inward, a tall hymenium150–180 μm, branched and anastomosing paraphyses, large ascospores 25–33 × 12–17 μm, and absence of secondary metabolites. A phylogenetic analysis is provided based on nrITS and nrLSU sequences that support the separation of both novel species. The current study documents the presence of twelve lichenicolous fungi from India that were previously unknown from the country. These fungi include Cercidospora solearispora, Endococcus verrucosus, Lichenopeltella leptogii, Lichenostigma dimelaenae, Polycoccum aksoyi, P. evae, P. kerneri, Rosellinula haplospora, Scutula milliaris, Sphaerellothecium parmotrematis and Stigmidium ramalinae. Moreover, this research reveals that Cladophialophora parmeliae has expanded its distributional range in India. These newly documented lichenicolous fungi provide valuable insights into the biodiversity and ecological dynamics of the Indian lichen flora, throwing light on previously unexplored aspects of fungal diversity in the region.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Clonostachys farinosa was assembled using the strain CSC22A0184 that was isolated from the lichen Parmotrema clavuliferum. The total length of the mitogenome was 51,551 bp and contained 49 genes: 15 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 26 transfer RNA genes, and six open reading frames. The GC content of the mitogenome was 28.5% and had a base composition of 36.4% A, 12.6% C, 15.9% G, and 35.1% T. Phylogenetic analysis based on 14 protein-coding genes indicates that C. farinosa is clustered in the family Bionectriaceae. This is the first study of the mitogenome of C. farinosa, which is helpful for understanding the evolution of species within the genus Clonostachys.

The primary purpose of the study, as part of the planned conservation work, was to uncover all aspects of autochthonous biofilm pertaining to the formation of numerous deterioration symptoms occurring on the limestone Rožanec Mithraeum monument in Slovenia. Using state-of-the-art sequencing technologies combining mycobiome data with observations made via numerous light and spectroscopic (FTIR and Raman) microscopy analyses pointed out to epilithic lichen Gyalecta jenensis and its photobiont, carotenoid-rich Trentepohlia aurea, as the origin of salmon-hued pigmented alterations of limestone surface. Furthermore, the development of the main deterioration symptom on the monument, i.e., biopitting, was instigated by the formation of typical endolithic thalli and ascomata of representative Verrucariaceae family (Verrucaria sp.) in conjunction with the oxalic acid-mediated dissolution of limestone. The domination of lichenized fungi, as the main deterioration agents, both on the relief and surrounding limestone, was additionally supported by the high relative abundance of lichenized and symbiotroph groups in FUNGuild analysis. Obtained results not only upgraded knowledge of this frequently occurring but often overlooked group of extremophilic stone heritage deteriogens but also provided a necessary groundwork for the development of efficient biocontrol formulation applicable in situ for the preservation of similarly affected limestone monuments. Gut microbes are pivotal reference indicators for assessing the health status of animals. Before introducing artificially bred species into the wild, examining their gut microbe composition is crucial to help mitigate potential threats posed to wild populations. However, gut microbiological trait similarities between wild and artificially bred green turtles remain unexplored. Therefore, this study compared the gut microbiological characteristics of wild and artificially bred green turtles (Chelonia mydas) through high-throughput Illumina sequencing technology. The a-diversity of intestinal bacteria in wild green turtles, as determined by Shannon and Chao indices, significantly surpasses that of artificial breeding green turtles (p < 0.01). However, no significant differences were detected in the fungal a-diversity between wild and artificially bred green turtles. Meanwhile, the ß-diversity analysis revealed significant differences between wild and artificially bred green turtles in bacterial and fungal compositions. The community of gut bacteria in artificially bred green turtles had a significantly higher abundance of Fusobacteriota including those belonging to the Paracoccus, Cetobacterium, and Fusobacterium genera than that of the wild green turtle. In contrast, the abundance of bacteria belonging to the phylum Actinobacteriota and genus Nautella significantly decreased. Regarding the fungal community, artificially bred green turtles had a significantly higher abundance of Fusarium, Sterigmatomyces, and Acremonium and a lower abundance of Candida and Rhodotorula than the wild green turtle. The PICRUSt2 analyses demonstrated significant differences in the functions of the gut bacterial flora between groups, particularly in carbohydrate and energy metabolism. Fungal functional guild analysis further revealed that the functions of the intestinal fungal flora of wild and artificially bred green turtles differed significantly in terms of animal pathogens-endophytes-lichen parasites-plant pathogens-soil saprotrophswood saprotrophs. BugBase analysis revealed significant potential pathogenicity and stress tolerance variations between wild and artificially bred green turtles. Collectively, this study elucidates the distinctive characteristics of gut microbiota in wild and artificially bred green turtles while evaluating their health status. Background: Emerging evidence emphasized the role of oral microbiome in oral lichen planus (OLP). To date, no dominant pathogenic bacteria have been identified consistently. It is noteworthy that a decreased abundance of Streptococcus, a member of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in OLP patients has been commonly reported, indicating its possible effect on OLP. This study aims to investigate the composition of LAB genera in OLP patients by high-throughput sequencing, and to explore the possible relationship between them. Methods: We collected saliva samples from patients with OLP (n = 21) and healthy controls (n = 22) and performed 16 S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. In addition, the abundance of LAB genera was comprehensively analyzed and compared between OLP and HC group. To verify the expression of Lactococcus lactis, real time PCR was conducted in buccal mucosa swab from another 14 patients with OLP and 10 HC. Furthermore, the correlation was conducted between clinical severity of OLP and LAB. Results: OLP and HC groups showed similar community richness and diversity. The members of LAB, Lactococcus and Lactococcus lactis significantly decreased in saliva of OLP cases and negatively associated with OLP severity. In addition, Lactococcus and Lactococcus lactis showed negative relationship with Fusobacterium and Aggregatibacter, which were considered as potential pathogens of OLP. Similarly, compared with healthy controls, the amount of Lactococcus lactis in mucosa lesion of OLP patients was significantly decreased. Conclusions: A lower amount of Lactococcus at genus level, Lactococcus lactis at species level was observed in OLP cases and associated with disease severity. Lichens are extremophilic symbiotic associations possessing phenomenal resistance to abiotic stress-factors. In this regard, melanization of thalli in response to UV is one of the mechanisms protecting lichens from excessive insolation. However, microstructure and biochemical properties of the melanized thalli are still poorly investigated. In the present study, morphological, nanomechanical, and physiological, and biochemical traits of naturally melanized thalli of the Cetraria islandica (L.) Ach. lichen were examined. In the upper cortex of its thallus, the nature of the pigment layer was verified using typical qualitative reactions for melanins. It was found that melanization leads to changes in microstructure of the upper cortex of the mycobiont, in particular, thickening of the cell walls and extension of the interhyphal space. The melanized and pale (nonmelanized) thalli were found to differ from each other in their nanomechanical properties, including the parameters of adhesion and rigidity. This implies the possible formation of complex associates of melanin with cell wall components in the melanized mycobiont. In addition, higher antioxidant activity and lower respiratory activity were found in the melanized thalli of C. islandica in comparison with the pale thalli. Presumably, the found modifications in the microstructure and nanomechanical, physiological, and biochemical properties of thalli occurring in the course of melanization make lichens more resistant to intense insolation. The island of Newfoundland, Canada, is known as an area with high lichen species richness; however, most of this diversity is known from coastal regions where the ocean creates a maritime climate. The central part of the island has a more continental climate and is also the part of the province with the highest levels of industrial forest harvest and mining activities. For these reasons, it has not been an area considered to have high lichen diversity. Here, we show how local Mi'kmaw knowledge in collaboration with western scientific expertise facilitated a two-eyed seeing approach (Etuaptmumk) that yielded the discovery of overlooked lichen diversity in Central Newfoundland. Surveys by the authors throughout 2023 yielded collections of 175 species of lichenized, lichenicolous and allied fungi from the area known as Charlie's Place. Of these, there is a high proportion of cyanolichens (13%) and calicioids (11%), indicating high ecological value and potential old growth/ancient forest status. In addition, we report 19 new species records for the province, two of which (Chaenothecopsis vainioana and Myrionora albidula) are new records for Canada. Overall, the survey work reported here suggests that Charlie's Place should be a priority area for protection within the context of Central Newfoundland. This work also illustrates the value of research under the framework of Etuaptmumk and the benefits of combining local Indigenous and western scientific knowledge. Conservation of lichens is impeded by knowledge gaps on their distribution and habitat requirements. This is a significant issue in vast, isolated and harsh environment regions such as subarctic regions, where lichen communities remain under documented. Lichen biodiversity assessments provide useful insights to better understand the functions supported by these ecologically important and sensitive species. This study aims i) to describe the conservation status of lichen communities and their α- and β-diversity components across a subarctic region in Northern Quebec (190 km2), ii) to describe their functional traits across the habitat types found in this region, and iii) to identify habitat types constituting lichen biodiversity hotspots. Lichens were sampled in 45 plots in habitats ranging from coniferous and deciduous forests to bogs, fens and rocky outcrops. A total of 115 species of largely macrolichens, calicioid lichens and allied fungi were identified, of which 18% currently have ranks of conservation concern at the provincial level, and 38% are newly reported for the region (∼124,000 km2 around our study area). Richness across plots averaged 36 ± 9 species and plots richer in microhabitats often harbored more species (R2 = 0.22). Differences in species composition were identified among plots and habitat types through NMDS and perMANOVA analyses (R2 = 0.35; p < 0.001), both being supported by differences in microhabitat composition (Mantel r = 0.22 and perMANOVA R2 = 0.29, respectively; p < 0.001). Thirty-five species showed significant preferences for a habitat based on the Pearson's phi coefficient of association. Our analysis on functional traits revealed significant patterns of association with habitat types, including i) saxicolous species with rocky outcrops, ii) epiphytic/epixylic species and vegetative reproduction traits (soredia, isidia) with coniferous stands, and iii) species belonging to the Parmeliaceae family with fens. Rocky outcrops represented the main lichen biodiversity hotspots in the region, while other habitat types were also important for maintaining total and complementary biodiversity. We are confident that our methodological approach including systematic sampling, full habitat variability representation, and the evaluation of complementary biodiversity components, can be effectively applied to fill gaps on lichen biodiversity in other underexplored regions across the globe. Macrolichen diversity and community composition were determined for an area of high botanical interest in the Coast Ranges of Northern California – the Horse Mountain Botanical Area (HMBA) in Six Rivers National Forest. The Coast Ranges have been suggested to have high lichen diversity, yet detailed site-specific macrolichen surveys are lacking for the area. The HMBA is characterized by the presence of ultramafic (serpentine) soils, contributing to its diverse assemblage of conifers. Here we present comprehensive data on macrolichens of the HMBA integrated with environmental variables at the landscape level. Twenty 0.4 ha sampling plots were positioned across the varying habitats of the HMBA and macrolichens were intensively sampled from all substrata. Out of 888 total collections, 119 macrolichen species in 52 genera were identified, 63 species were sequenced for the mycobiont internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, and all species were vouchered. Microenvironmental influences on lichen community composition were ordinated with nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS). Within-plot measured environmental variables with strongest correlations to ordination Axis 1 were 1) total tree basal area, 2) proportion of conifer basal area relative to hardwoods, and 3) distance between plot center and nearest stream. Distinct macrolichen communities were found in plots containing primarily conifers versus mixed hardwood-conifer plots. All plots contained both nitrogen-fixing and pendulous forage macrolichens; in each of the three hardwood-dominated plots, nitrogen-fixing lichens composed nearly a third of the species total. When epiphytic macrolichen species richness and dominance within the HMBA were compared to data from other regional forests, the HMBA showed comparable community composition but averaged 39% higher species richness. Lichens are an important part of forest ecosystems, contributing to forest biodiversity, the formation of micro-niches and nutrient cycling. Assessing the diversity of lichenised fungi in complex ecosystems, such as forests, requires time and substantial skills in collecting and identifying lichens. The completeness of inventories thus largely depends on the expertise of the collector, time available for the survey and size of the studied area. Molecular methods of surveying biodiversity hold the promise to overcome these challenges. DNA barcoding of individual lichen specimens and bulk collections is already being applied; however, eDNA methods have not yet been evaluated as a tool for lichen surveys. Here, we assess which species of lichenised fungi can be detected in eDNA swabbed from bark surfaces of living trees in central European forests. We compare our findings to an expert floristic survey carried out in the same plots about a decade earlier. In total, we studied 150 plots located in three study regions across Germany. In each plot, we took one composite sample based on six trees, belonging to the species Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris. The eDNA method yielded 123 species, the floristic survey 87. The total number of species found with both methods was 167, of which 48% were detected only in eDNA , 26% only in the floristic survey and 26% in both methods. The eDNA contained a higher diversity of inconspicuous species. Many prevalent taxa reported in the floristic survey could not be found in the eDNA due to gaps in molecular reference databases. We conclude that, currently, eDNA has merit as a complementary tool to monitor lichen biodiversity at large scales, but cannot be used on its own. Objectives: Lichens are complex symbiotic organisms that generate various bioactive compounds with significant therapeutic value. We investigated the chemical composition and bioactivity of the acetone extract of the Algerian lichen Physconia venusta (Ach.) poet. Materials and Methods: Phytochemical screening was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antibacterial activity was assessed against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Bacillus subtilis using an agar diffusion test with the determination of the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC), while the antioxidant activity was determined using different chemical methods (DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, reducing power, superoxide anion scavenging, ß-carotene bleaching, and metal chelate). In addition, cytotoxic activity was tested using Artemia salina (Brine shrimp) bioassay. Results: The studied extract exhibited intense antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus with inhibition diameters of 28 ± 0.01 and 22 ± 0.01 mm, respectively, with a MIC value of 6.25 mg/mL and a selectivity index of 2.8. The obtained extract showed different antioxidant trends depending on the selected assay. GC-MS analysis revealed many secondary metabolites. The Fungal, Lichen, and Myxomycete Collections of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill Herbarium (NCU) contain 952 type specimens, representing 607 names, which, based on current taxonomy and nomenclature, amount to 596 unique taxa. This wealth of type specimens is a legacy of the taxonomic research on fungi conducted by William C. Coker, Alma Holland Beers, John N. Couch, and other UNC mycologists in the first half of the 20th century. This inventory is a compilation of these types plus specimens for invalidly published designations that were intended as types by the mycologists who worked on these specimens. Also included are original material specimens intended as types for taxa in invalid publications, which were not included in the publications by subsequent authors validating the taxa. Fungal groups particularly well represented in the types held at NCU are boletes, clavarioid fungi, gasteroid fungi, hydnoid fungi, and septobasidia. A lectotype is designated for Clavaria atroumbrina. Since 2014, more than 1000 collections including >100 types have been loaned by NCU to mycologists at institutions around the world. Lichens, a diverse group of organisms, have a unique structure consisting of fungal filaments and photosynthetic partner cells. This research conducted a comprehensive chemical analysis and evaluation of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of methanolic and acetone extracts from Umbilicaria crustulosa lichen, along with its isolated metabolites. The process involved separating atranorin and chloratranorin fractions, physodic acid, and gyrophoric acid. Secondary metabolites were identified using chromatographic and spectroscopic data. The total polyphenols content was determined spectrophotometrically. This study examined the antioxidant activity of extracts of the lichen U. crustulosa and the isolated fractions using three methods: DPPH scavenging activity, ABTS scavenging activity, and reducing power. This study also evaluated the acute oral toxicity and the anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts in Wistar albino rats. A higher content of the total phenolic compounds was found in the acetone extract, but antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were more prominent in the methanolic extract. The isolated atranorin and chloratranorin fractions and compound physodic acid showed the highest antioxidant activity. No toxic effects were noted in the acute oral toxicity study. A total of 205 tardigrades representing two orders, five families, nine genera and ten species were extracted from a moss sample (104 tardigrades) and a lichen sample (101 tardigrades) collected near Missoula, Montana, in 2016. Three of the species are new to Montana and one is new to science, Platicrista loloensis nov. sp., which is distinguished by its smooth cuticle, the presence of internal cuticular bars at the base of the claws of legs II and III and a median cuticular bar between the claws of leg IV. From recent surveys of Piedmont rocky river habitats, 22 noteworthy species of lichens and two lichenicolous fungi are presented, including 18 species new to North Carolina, three new to eastern North America, three new to North America and three potentially new to science. While Carrizo Plain (California, USA) is a hotspot for rare and endangered species, little effort has been made to sample the lichen flora of the Plain. To assemble a preliminary checklist of lichens from the basin floor of Carrizo Plain, we sampled along a transect from the basin's alkali complex to its western edge, as well as from clay slickspots with high sodium content, and a rocky site in the eastern Plain. We document a substantial lichen flora on the Plain and note several collections that were the first record for a species in the region: five species were the first in San Luis Obispo County, and nine were the first for the San Joaquin Desert. We include notable collections and observations on potential ecological patterns and highlight Carrizo Plain as a promising hotspot for research on lichen ecology, particularly for species adapted to extreme environmental conditions.
