Abstract

Due to its unique geophysical features and to the low density population of the area, Sos Enattos is a promising candidate site to host the Einstein Telescope (ET), the third-generation Gravitational Wave Observatory. The geophysical characterization of the Sos Enattos former mine, close to one of the proposed ET corners, started in 2010 with the deployment of seismic and environmental sensors underground. Since 2019 a new extensive array of seismometers, magnetometers and acoustic sensors have been installed in three stations along the underground tunnels, with one additional station at the surface. Beside a new geological survey over a wider area, two boreholes about 270 m deep each were excavated at the other two corners, determining the good quality of the drilled granite and orthogneiss rocks and the absence of significant thoroughgoing fault zones. These boreholes are instrumented with broadband seismometers that revealed an outstanding low level of vibrational noise in the low-frequency band of ET-LF (2-10 Hz), significantly lower than the Peterson's NLNM and resulting among the quietest seismic stations in the world in that frequency band. The low seismic background and the reduced number of seismic glitches ensure that just a moderated Newtonian noise subtraction would be needed to achieve the ET target sensitivity. Geoelectrical and active seismic campaigns have been carried out to reveal the features of the subsurface, revealing the presence of small-sized fractured areas with limited water circulation. Finally, temporary arrays of seismometers, magnetometers and acoustic sensors are deployed in the area to study the local sources of environmental noise.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the short- and long-term effects of the Fasting-Mimicking-Diet (FMD) intervention on neuromuscular parameters of force production in healthy young men. Methods: Twenty-four physically active men completed the study. Participants were randomly assigned to Fasting-Mimicking (FMD) or Normal Diet (ND) and asked to follow three cycles of dietary intervention. Neuromuscular parameters of force production during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVCs) with the leg extensors muscles and anthropometrics were measured at baseline (T0), at the end of the first cycle (T1), and 7–10 days after the 3rd cycle of the nutritional intervention (T2). The study was registered on Clinicaltrials.gov (No. NCT04476615). Results: There was a significant decrease in body mass at T1 for FMD (− 2.6 kg, ∆ from baseline, on average; p < 0.05) but not in ND (− 0.1 kg;). Neuromuscular parameters of force production, muscle volume, and MVC torque did not change or differ between groups across visits. Results were similar even when parameters were normalized by muscle volume. Conclusion: The consumption of FMD in a group of young healthy male subjects showed to be feasible, and it did not affect neuromuscular parameters of force production. The results suggest that FMD could be safely adopted by strength athletes without detrimental effects on force and muscle volume. Further research in clinical population at risk of muscle mass loss, such as elderly and obese subjects with sarcopenia, is warranted.

Abstract

The area surrounding the dismissed mine of Sos Enattos (Sardinia, Italy) is the Italian candidate site for hosting Einstein Telescope (ET), the third-generation gravitational wave (GW) observatory. One of the goals of ET is to extend the sensitivity down to frequencies well below those currently achieved by GW detectors, i.e. down to 2 Hz. In the bandwidth [1,10] Hz, the seismic noise of anthropogenic origin is expected to represent the major perturbation to the operation of the infrastructure, and the site that will host the future detector must fulfill stringent requirements on seismic disturbances. In this paper we describe the operation of a temporary, 15-element, seismic array deployed in close proximity to the mine. Signals of anthropogenic origin have a transient nature, and their spectra are characterized by a wide spectral lobe spanning the [3,20] Hz frequency interval. Superimposed to this wide lobe are narrow spectral peaks within the [3,8] Hz frequency range. Results from slowness analyses suggest that the origin of these peaks is related to vehicle traffic along the main road running east of the mine. Exploiting the correlation properties of seismic noise, we derive a dispersion curve for Rayleigh waves, which is then inverted for a shallow velocity structure down to depths of ≈ 150 m. This data, which is consistent with that derived from analysis of a quarry blast, provide a first assessment of the elastic properties of the rock materials at the site candidate to hosting ET.

Abstract

In order to assess the quality and performance of bagged broccoli-raab, a recently marketed product, several nutritive parameters were determined in novel hybrid and conventional cultivars at pre- and post-packaging stages in the industrial environment. The characterization of shoots and composing organs at post-cut stage included contents of dietary fibre (DF), glycaemic carbohydrates (GC), antioxidant compounds (ACC) and capacity (AOC), which were determined by chromatographic methods and spectrophotometric assays. ACC and AOC were analysed during shelf life of bagged products. Genotype and storage effects were addressed as variability factors at fixed packaging conditions. Contents of DF and GC (39.64-34.57; 7.56-2.21 g/100 g), glucosinolates (37.47-24.63 mg/g SIN), and ACC (total phenolics: 18.64-14.92 mg GAE/g; flavonoids: 34.74-30.96 mg/g CE; flavonols: 14.62-14.08 mg QE/g), and AOC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity: 354.62-293.25 µmol/g TE; DPPH• scavenging activity: 59.35-46.14) were lower in shoots of the hybrid than marketed cultivar. In both genotypes, AOC was maximal in leaves, followed by florets and stems. The integrated analyses suggested that the hybrid genotype was better suited for fresh consumption and that increased ratio of florets/leaves vs. stem is expected to raise product antioxidant properties. The comparison of unprocessed and bagged products pointed at a value decay of most parameters except for glucosinolates and correlation analyses supported the necessity of performing multiple antioxidant assays to enhance product quality evaluation. As for shelf life, storage time was the major factor affecting antioxidant properties, while genotype and interaction effects were minimal.

Abstract

In this retrospective study we share our single-center experience using a magnetic seed for the preoperative localization of non-palpable breast lesions. Patients who underwent a preoperative localization with Magseed® (Endomagnetics, Cambridge, UK) placement between 2020 and 2022 were enrolled. Indications to Magseed placement have been established during multidisciplinary meetings prior to surgery and all patients underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS). 45 patients were included. Magnetic seeds have been introduced under ultrasound guidance in 40 patients (88.9%) and under stereotactic guidance in 5 patients (11.1%). We registered a highly successful placement rate (97.8%), with only one case of migration (2.2%). After BCS, all the magnetic seeds were recovered (100% retrieval rate). The re-excision rate for positive margins was 0%. Our experience, with a highly successful placement and retrieval rate and a re-excision rate equal to 0%, is consistent with the encouraging literature published on Magseed so far, suggesting this technique to be extremely effective. Moreover, our single case of seed migration supports the existing data stating that Magseed migration is rare. In conclusion, despite acknowledging Magseed limitations, we highly value the advantages linked to this technique, and we, therefore, uphold its use.

Abstract

El despliegue de IPv6 en las redes de datos sigue avanzando a medida que se agotan los recursos IPv4. Algunas organizaciones inician el despliegue de IPv6 con mayor conocimiento acerca del tema y otras lo hacen de forma urgente, sin la debida planificaci��n, ante la carencia de direcciones IPv4 para sus nuevas redes. En general, la adopci��n de IPv6 no avanza con la rapidez que ser��a deseada debido a la extendida utilizaci��n de herramientas que permiten la reutilizaci��n de direcciones IPv4 y, tambi��n, por una tendencia habitual entre los administradores de red de continuar con las pr��cticas conocidas y demorar la implementaci��n de nuevos protocolos. La demora en la implementaci��n de IPv6 retras�� la capacitaci��n de los administradores de redes y no permiti�� la generaci��n de valiosas experiencias relacionadas con la configuraci��n segura de los dispositivos de red. Este trabajo tiene como finalidad aportar informaci��n acerca de algunos de los problemas de seguridad que los administradores de red deber��n enfrentar en el despliegue y configuraci��n de IPv6 y presentar recomendaciones de buenas pr��cticas, intentando evitar despliegues que puedan llegar a comprometer la seguridad de los datos en la red.

Abstract

Consistent body of evidence shows that transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) over the primary motor cortex (M1) facilitates motor learning and promotes recovery after stroke. However, the knowledge of molecular mechanisms behind tDCS effects needs to be deepened for a more rational use of this technique in clinical settings. Here we characterized the effects of anodal tDCS of M1, focusing on its impact on glutamatergic synaptic transmission and plasticity. Mice subjected to tDCS displayed increased long-term potentiation (LTP) and enhanced basal synaptic transmission at layer II/III horizontal connections. They performed better than sham-stimulated mice in the single-pellet reaching task and exhibited increased forelimb strength. Dendritic spine density of layer II/III pyramidal neurons was also increased by tDCS. At molecular level, tDCS enhanced: 1) BDNF expression, 2) phosphorylation of CREB, CaMKII, and GluA1, and 3) S-nitrosylation of GluA1 and HDAC2. Blockade of nitric oxide synthesis by L-NAME prevented the tDCS-induced enhancement of GluA1 phosphorylation at Ser831 and BDNF levels, as well as of miniature excitatory postsynaptic current (mEPSC) frequency, LTP and reaching performance. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that anodal tDCS engages plasticity mechanisms in the M1 and highlight a role for nitric oxide (NO) as a novel mediator of tDCS effects.
