OBJECTIVE: Most evidence supporting screening for undernutrition is for children aged 6-59 months. However, the highest risk of mortality and highest incidence of wasting occurs in the first 6 months of life. We evaluated relationships between neonatal anthropometric indicators, including birth weight, weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), weight-for-length Z-score (WLZ), length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and mortality and growth at 6 months of age among infants in Burkina Faso. DESIGN: Data arose from a randomised controlled trial evaluating neonatal azithromycin administration for the prevention of child mortality. We evaluated relationships between baseline anthropometric measures and mortality, wasting (WLZ < -2), stunting (LAZ < -2) and underweight (WAZ < -2) at 6 months of age were estimated using logistic regression models adjusted for the childs age and sex. Introduction: Reactance inversion (RI) has been associated with impaired peripheral airway function in persistent asthma. However, there is little to no data about the difference between asthmatic children with and without RI. This study aimed to detect clinical and lung function differences in moderate-severe asthmatic children with and without RI. Methods: This study was conducted between 2021 and 2022 in asthmatic school-age children. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) and spirometry were performed according to ATS/ERS standards. Results: A total of 62 patients, with a mean age of 8.4 years, 54.8% were males and were divided into three groups: group 1 (32.3%) with no RI, group 2 (27.4%) with RI but disappearing after bronchodilator test and group 3 (40.3%) with persistent RI after bronchodilator test. Children in groups 2 and 3 had significantly lower birth weights than in group 1. Group 2 had lower gestational age compared to group 1. FEV1 and FEF25-75 of forced vital capacity were significantly lower in groups 2 and 3. In group 3, R5, AX, R5-20, and R5-R20/R5 ratios were significantly higher. Bronchodilator responses (BDR) in X5c, AX, and R5-R20 were significantly different between groups and lower in group 3. Conclusion: RI is frequently found in children with moderate-severe persistent asthma, particularly in those with a history of prematurity or low birth weight. Residential exposure to greenness has shown positive influences on pregnancy outcomes like birth weight, preterm births, and small to gestational age (SGA) deliveries. We aimed to comprehensively review and investigate these associations by conducting a systematic review with meta-analysis. Relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases before June 2023. Summary effect estimates included birth weight, low birth weight (LBW), preterm births, and SGA which were calculated for 0.1 unit increase in residential greenness exposure. Overall quality of the evidence was examined through Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. The review included 31 articles and found a statistically significant increase in birth weight measured at 250 m buffer distance (β = 8.95, 95% CI = 1.63–16.27). Green spaces were also associated with lower odds of LBW (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.96–0.98). Objectives: The primary objective of this prospective cohort study was to assess the usefulness of a predefined multidisciplinary care pathway-based management on pregnancy outcome(s) in women with SLE who already had at least one adverse obstetric outcome(s). Methods: Between March 2010 and March 2023, all consecutive, consenting women with SLE who already had at least one previous adverse obstetric outcome (preterm labour, pre-eclampsia, termination of pregnancy, miscarriage, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), intrauterine death (IUD) or stillbirth] were prospectively screened and counselled. The protocol comprised preconception and post-natal drug and disease status review, periodic ante-natal visits for the monitoring of pregnancy and drug and disease status review and post-natal drug and disease status review and contraception advice. Therapeutic changes were made as necessary at each visit. Results: A total of 213 women were screened and 197 women (age, 28 ± 6.34 years) were enrolled who had 226 pregnancies. Previous poor obstetric outcomes were miscarriage(s), 186; termination of pregnancy, 4; preterm labour, 51; IUGR, 36; IUD or stillbirth, 16; low birth weight (LBW), 44 and pre-eclampsia, 4. Seventy-seven (39%) women had secondary APS and 37 (19%) had a history of lupus nephritis. There were 194/226 (86%) live births [40 LBW (18%); caesarean section in 101 (45%)]. Thirty pregnancies culminated in miscarriages and 2 in IUDs (14%). Sixty-eight patients (30%) experienced lupus flare during pregnancy (36 mild, 20 moderate and 8 severe). Conclusion: Our experience underscores the usefulness of a predefined multidisciplinary care pathway-based management for improving pregnancy outcomes in women with SLE who had previous adverse outcomes. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disease in preterm infants. Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of ROP. Due to its antioxidant effects, bilirubin has been proposed to be protective against ROP. This study explored the association between hyperbilirubinemia and ROP. We analyzed a 10-year cohort from a neonatal intensive care unit in Milan, Italy, including 1606 infants born under 32 weeks and/or < 1500 g. Data from 1606 infants meeting specific inclusion criteria were reviewed. Eighty infants were excluded due to lack of data, 1526 were deemed eligible for analysis, and 1269 had hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy. There was a higher incidence of ROP among infants with hyperbilirubinemia (13.8%) versus those without (7.8%, p<0.01). Infants with any ROP, non-severe or severe ROP, were exposed to hyperbilirubinemia for a significantly higher number of days compared with those without ROP. Each additional day of exposure increases the risk of developing any ROP by 5%, non-severe ROP by 4%, and severe ROP by 6%. However, this correlation was not observed in infants with gestational age less than 27 weeks and/or body weight less than 1000 g. Conclusion: Our data show that hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy is associated with an increased risk of developing ROP. However, severe hyperbilirubinemia and ROP share many of their risk factors. Therefore, rather than being a risk factor itself, hyperbilirubinemia may be a surrogate for other risk factors for ROP. Objective: To determine if there is a correlation between maternal short stature and neonatal birth weight among women with adverse outcomes related to labor dystocia. Methods: The medical records of singleton deliveries with adverse obstetric outcomes related to labor dystocia during 2014–2020, in a single tertiary center, were reviewed. Outcomes included at least one of the following: cesarean delivery (CD) due to cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD), prolonged second stage, shoulder dystocia, third‐ or fourth‐degree perineal tear. Maternal short stature was defined as height below the 10th centile (short stature group) and normal stature was defined as maternal height between the 10th and 90th centiles (normal stature group). Maternal and neonatal characteristics were compared between the groups. Results: A total of 3295 women were included, among them, 307 in the short stature group (9.3%, height 1.52 ± 0.02 m) and 2988 in the normal stature group (90.7%, height 1.63 ± 0.04 m). Evaluating the entire cohort revealed similar neonatal birth weights comparing the short and normal stature groups. A subgroup analysis of women after CD due to CPD (n = 296) revealed lower neonatal birth weights in the short stature group (n = 31) compared with the normal stature group (n = 265) (3215 ± 411 vs 3484 ± 427 g, P = 0.001, respectively). Multivariable linear regression was performed for women who underwent CD due to CPD. After adjusting for obesity and diabetes mellitus, short stature and nulliparity were found to be independently associated with decreased neonatal birth weight (266 g less for short stature, P = 0.001, and 294 g less for nulliparity, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Among women with short stature, CD due to CPD occurs at lower neonatal birth weights. Background: Soil-transmitted helminth infections (STHs) in pregnancy have been linked to maternal anemia, low birth weight, and adverse perinatal outcomes. STH includes Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Trichuris trichiura. However, conflicting evidence exists regarding these effects. Hence, we aimed to assess the association of STH infections with perinatal outcomes. Methods and Materials: A community-based cohort study was conducted among pregnant women in primary care settings in Puducherry, South India, during December 2019 to April 2021. Stool samples were collected for STH screening and confirmed using polymerase chain reaction. Information on perinatal outcomes and hemoglobin levels were extracted from case records. The association of pre-term birth, low birth weight, anemia, and miscarriages with STH infection was analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: Among the 650 women enrolled, 58 (8.9%) had one of the STH infections. At the time of recruitment, 336 (52.0%) women had anemia. Twenty-four women (3.7%) had miscarriages, 14 (2.2%) had pre-term birth, and 65 (10.4%) had low-birth-weight (LBW) babies. All 14 pre-term babies had LBW, and out of 65 LBW, 40 were in mothers with anemia. Incidence of LBW, pre-term deliveries, and anemia were higher in women with STH than in those without STH (LBW: 12.3% vs 10.2%, P = 0.62; pre-term: 3.5% vs 2.1%, P = 0.5; and anemia: 54.4% vs 51.85, P = 0.7). Conclusion: Though the incidence of anemia, LBW, and pre-term delivery was higher in women with STH infections compared to those without STH, we did not find any significant association between the presence of STH infections and perinatal outcomes. This study aimed to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters for calving ease (CE) and their genetic correlations with growth, reproductive, carcass, and feed efficiency traits in Nellore cattle. Phenotypes for CE are scored in two categories: normal calving and assisted calving. The traits considered were probability of precocious calving, age at first calving, stayability, adjusted scrotal circumference at 365 days of age, accumulated cow productivity, age at puberty of males, gestation length, birth weight, adjusted weights at 210 and 450 days of age, adult cow weight, frame score, hip height, rib eye area, subcutaneous backfat thickness, rump fat thickness, intramuscular fat percentage, residual feed intake and dry matter intake. The estimation of genetic parameters was performed using a two‐trait threshold‐linear animal model, except for CE, stayability, and probability of precocious calving, which were evaluated through a two‐trait threshold animal model. The direct (0.27) and maternal (0.19) heritability estimates for CE in heifers primiparous Nellore indicated that selecting for this trait is feasible. The selection to improve the female sexual precocity should consider CE during the selection and mating decisions to reduce calving problems. Genetic correlation estimates between CE and BW suggest that selecting low birth weight to reduce calving problems is not an appropriate strategy to improve calving ease in heifers Nellore. Therefore, adopting a multi‐trait selection model with CE and BW in the Nellore breed would reduce calving difficulties, particularly in sexually precocious heifers, without impairing the growth, reproductive, feed efficiency conversion, and carcass indicator traits. Introduction: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) antibody encephalitis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by synaptic NMDAr current disruption and receptor hypofunction, often affecting women during pregnancy. Clinical manifestations associated with anti-NMDAr encephalitis can occur both in the mother and fetus. Methods: We generated a systematic search of the literature to identify epidemiological, clinical, and serological data related to pregnant women with anti-NMDAr encephalitis and their children, analyzing the fetal outcomes. We examined the age and neurologic symptoms of the mothers, the presence of an underlying tumor, immunotherapies used during pregnancy, duration of the pregnancy, and type of delivery. Results: Data from 41 patients were extrapolated from the included studies. Spontaneous interruption of pregnancy, premature birth, and cesarean section were reported in pregnant women with NMDAr encephalitis. Several fetal and neonatal symptoms (e.g., movement disorders, spina bifida, poor sucking, respiratory distress, cardiac arrhythmias, infections, icterus, hypoglycemia, and low birth weight) depending on the mother's serum anti-NR1 concentration were also reported. Conclusions: We characterized the outcomes of children born from mothers with anti-NMDAr encephalitis, analyzing the pivotal risk factors related to pregnancy and maternal disorder. Neuropsychiatric involvement seems strictly related to pathogenic NMDAr antibodies detected in maternal and/or neonatal serum. These findings clarify a complex condition to manage, outlining the risks associated with pregnant women with anti-NMDAr encephalitis and also providing a concrete guide for therapeutic strategies to prevent potential harm to the fetus and the child's neurodevelopment. Alcohol abuse is another manifestation of an unhealthy lifestyle and is a problem in most countries, including Bulgaria. Another risk factor adversely affecting a woman's health is drug use. Women who use drugs face problems related to hormones, fertility, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause. A nutritional imbalance between calories consumed and expended and low physical activity are the main causes of overweight and obesity, which pose risks to both the health of the woman and the health of her generation. Objectives: To establish neonatal pain management practices as an essential developmental supportive measure at a tertiary care unit. Methods: This quality improvement initiative was conducted as per Point-of-Care-Quality-Improvement Model over 6 mo, followed by 2 y of sustenance phase at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in northern India. Infants of birth weight ≤1800 g were included and assessed for pain. Pain Assessment and Management Practices via Education and Reinforcement (PAMPER) group was created by resident doctors and nursing staff. The Premature Infant Pain Profile score was used for the assessment of pain. Limiting factors were analyzed using a fishbone diagram and interventions were done in multiple Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. Results: At the end of interventions, 100% of procedures were assessed for pain. The mean (standard deviation) documented pain score for the first seven days was reduced from 12.8 (0.3) in the baseline phase to 7 (2.5). These interventions helped to sustain the practice in >70% of infants in the next 2 y. Conclusions: Low-cost interventions improved the pain assessment and management policy of authors' NICU with the establishment of a standard protocol. Age plays a significant role in the decline of fertility. However, we know very little about the association of paternal age with reproductive outcomes.To investigate the correlation between advanced paternal age and semen quality, embryo quality, pregnancy, and neonatal outcomes in IVF cycles.In this study, after excluding female partners aged ≥35 years, we analyzed data from 761 infertile couples who underwent in vitro fertilization cycles at the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC between June 2020 and March 2023. Cases were classified into three groups according to the age of the male: <35 years (530 infertile couples), 35 years ≤ paternal age <40 years (125 infertile couples), and ≥40 years (106 infertile couples). Then, we compared the general clinical data arising from in vitro fertilization cycles between the three groups, including semen parameters, embryonic parameters, and pregnancy and neonatal birth outcomes.Data analysis showed that the duration of infertility and the incidence of secondary infertility were significantly higher in paternal age ≥35 years groups than those aged <35 years (all p < 0.05). We also observed a significant difference between ≥40 years and <35 years groups in terms of the normal fertilization rate, high‐quality embryo rate, clinical pregnancy rate, miscarriage rate, live birth rate, Apgar scores, and the low birth weight neonatal rate (all p < 0.05). The group with paternal age ≥40 years showed statistically significant differences in terms of clinical pregnancy rate, miscarriage rate, live birth rate, and low birth weight on multivariable logistic regression (all p < 0.05).The results of our study indicate that advanced paternal age (≥40 years) has a significant impact on the embryo quality, pregnancy outcome, and neonatal outcome. AbstractBackgroundMethodsResultsConclusionNecrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory and necrotizing intestinal emergency that occurs in preterm infants and low birth weight newborns; however, no specific serum biomarkers for the diagnosis of NEC has been identified so far.Serum samples were collected from healthy neonatal controls and patients with NEC newly admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. ELISA was used to measure serum PK2 levels, and ROC curve analysis was sued to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of PK2 and other clinical biomarkers.Serum PK2 levels in the NEC group (n = 53) were significantly lower than those in the control group (n = 18), but increased to near-normal levels after the postoperative recovery period. The NLR value of NEC group was higher than that of control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in WBC and PLT count between NEC group and control group (P > 0.05). Serum CRP and PCT levels in NEC group were significantly higher than those in control group (P < 0.001 for CRP and P < 0.05 for PCT, respectively). After surgery, serum CRP, NLR and PCT levels were lower than before surgery, while serum PK2 levels were higher than before surgery (P < 0.05). The areas under the ROC curve (AUC) of PK2, PCT and CRP for the diagnosis of NEC were 0.837, 0.662 and 0.552, respectively. The AUC of PK2 combined with PCT, PK2 combined with CRP, and PK2 combined with PCT and CRP were 0.908, 0.854 and 0.981, respectively. PK2 exhibited the highest diagnostic efficacy for NEC.PK2 has higher diagnostic efficacy than PCT and CRP in the diagnosis of NEC; the combination of PK2 and PCT or CRP can significantly improve its diagnostic efficiency, especially when the three are combined at the same time. Background: Epidemiological studies have linked low birth weight to psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. Genomic analyses suggest a role of placental physiology on psychiatric risk. We investigated whether this association is causally related to impaired trophoblast function. Methods: We conducted a two-sample summary-data Mendelian randomization study using as instrumental variables those genetic variants strongly associated with birth weight, whose effect is exerted through the fetal genome, and are located near genes with differential expression in trophoblasts. Eight psychiatric and substance use disorders with >10,000 samples were included as outcomes. The inverse variance weighted method was used as the main analysis and several sensitivity analyses were performed for those significant results. Results: The inverse variance weighted estimate, based on 14 instrumental variables, revealed an association, after correction for multiple tests, between birth weight and broadly defined depression (β = -0.165, 95% CI = -0.282 to -0.047, P = 0.0059). Sensitivity analyses revealed the absence of heterogeneity in the effect of instrumental variables, confirmed by leave-one-out analysis, MR_Egger intercept, and MR_PRESSO. The effect was consistent using robust methods. Reverse causality was not detected. The effect was specifically linked to genetic variants near genes involved in trophoblast physiology instead of genes with fetal effect on birth weight or involved in placenta development. Conclusion: Impaired trophoblast functioning, probably leading to reduced fetal brain oxygen and nutrient supply, is causally related to broadly defined depression. Considering the therapeutic potential of some agents to treat fetal growth restriction, further research on the effect of trophoblast physiology on mental disorders may have future implications in prevention. Background: The pregnant women with intrahepatic cholestasis were at high risk of fetal distress, preterm birth and unexpected stillbirth. Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) was mainly caused by disorder of bile acid metabolism, whereas the specific mechanism was obscure. Methods: We performed proteomics analysis of 10 ICP specimens and 10 placenta specimens from patients without ICP through data-independent acquisition (DIA) technique to disclose differentially expressed proteins. We executed metabolomic analysis of 30 ICP specimens and 30 placenta specimens from patients without ICP through UPLC-MS/MS to identify differentially expressed metabolites. Enrichment and correlation analysis was used to obtain the direct molecular insights of ICP development. The ICP rat models were constructed to validate pathological features. Results: The heatmap of proteomics analysis showed the top 30 up-regulated and 30 down-regulated proteins. The metabolomic analysis revealed 20 richer and 4 less abundant metabolites in ICP samples compared with placenta specimens from patients without ICP, and enrichment pathways by these metabolites included primary bile acid biosynthesis, cholesterol metabolism, bile secretion, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism, purine metabolism and metabolic pathways. Combined analysis of multiple omics results demonstrated that bile acids such as Glycohyocholic acid, Glycine deoxycholic acid, beta-Muricholic acid, Noncholic acid, cholic acid, Gamma-Mercholic Acid, alpha-Muricholic acid and Glycochenodeoxycholic Aicd were significantly associated with the expression of GLRX3, MYL1, MYH7, PGGT1B, ACTG1, SP3, LACTB2, C2CD5, APBB2, IPO9, MYH2, PPP3CC, PIN1, BLOC1S1, DNAJC7, RASAL2 and ATCN3 etc. The core protein ACAT2 was involved in lipid metabolic process and animal model showed that ACAT2 was up-regulated in placenta and liver of pregnant rats and fetal rats. The neonates had low birth weight and Safranin O-Fast green FCF staining of animal models showed that poor osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation of fetal rats. Conclusion: Multiple metabolites-alpha-Muricholic acid, beta-Muricholic acid, Glycine deoxycholic acid and Glycochenodeoxycholic Acid etc. were perfect biomarkers to predict occurrence of ICP. Bile acids were significantly associated with varieties of protein expression and these proteins were differentially expressed in ICP samples. Introduction: Little is known about the fetal and pregnancy effects of khat chewing during pregnancy. The aim of the current study was to determine the impact of chewing khat during pregnancy on selected pregnancy outcomes in Ethiopia, 2022: A Cohort Study with a Generalized Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Approach. Methods: An institution-based prospective cohort study was employed in selected hospitals in eastern Ethiopia. Pregnant women who visited the selected hospitals in the study area during the study period that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included until a sample size (344) was fulfilled. The main outcomes studied in the present study were preterm birth and low birth weight. Data were collected through anthropometric and clinical measurements, and interviewers administered questionnaires. The survival analysis and generalized linear model analysis were performed to estimate the crude and adjusted relative risk and attributable risk. The Generalized Structural Equation Modeling (GSEM) analysis was performed using the Statistical software for data science (Stata) 'GSEM' command to examine the mediation effect. Results: The risk of occurrence of preterm birth was significantly higher among khat chewers [adjusted relative risk (aRR) = 2.19; 95%CI 1.21–3.96]. In further analysis after adjusting for gestational hypertension and cesarean delivery, the regression coefficient of khat chewing during pregnancy on preterm birth has been decreased in size from path n, β = 0.37, p<0.001 to path n', β = 0.15, p<0.005. The risk of occurrence of low birth weight among khat chewers was significantly higher (aRR = 4.17; 95%CI 2.11–8.25). In further analysis after adjusting for gestational hypertension, cesarean delivery, preterm birth and maternal anemia, the regression coefficient of khat chewing during pregnancy on low birth weight has been decreased in size from path q, β = 0.4, p<0.001 to path q', β = 0.2, p<0.001. Conclusion: Overall, the present study revealed that khat chewing is not only a worry of the current population but also a public health concern of the generation affecting unborn fetuses. Background: Infant survival is an important factor in any community's health. Low birth weight affects babies not only during their infancy but also has long-term consequences for their health as adults. Unfortunately, Sub-Saharan Africa as a region is still dealing with the burden of Low birth weight (LBW), and Tanzania as a part of this region is no exception. So this study aimed to determine the Magnitude of Low Birth Weight and Its Associated Maternal Factors among Women of Reproductive Age who gave birth to live babies. Methods: The study used analytical cross-sectional study design to analyze secondary data from the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey and Malaria Indicators Survey 2015–2016. A total of 4,644 women of reproductive age who gave birth to live babies within five years preceding the survey were included in the study. Both bivariate and multivariable logistics regression analyses were used to assess maternal factors associated with low birth weight. Results: The prevalence of LBW was 262(6.2%). After adjusting for confounders, the maternal factors associated with LBW were Age group of a pregnant woman [Less than 20 years (aOR = 1.907 CI = 1.134–3.205) in reference to those aged more than 34years], Number of ANC visits made [Inadequate visits (aOR = 1.612 CI = 1.266–2.05)], parity [para 2–4 (aOR = 0.609 CI = 0.453–0.818), para 5+ (aOR = 0.612 CI = 0.397–0.944)] and area of residence [Unguja (aOR = 1.981 CI = 1.367–2.87). Conclusion: The prevalence of low birth weight in Tanzania remains high. Women's age, parity, number of Antenatal care visits (ANC), and area of residence were found to be maternal factors associated with LBW. Pregnancy in stoma patients is a rare but complex condition and there is limited published literature regarding surgical and obstetric complications in pregnant stoma patients. The aim of this paper was to review stoma outcomes, perinatal morbidity and mortality, and early postpartum period in pregnant stoma patients.Data was retrospectively obtained on women of childbearing age, with a stoma, who had been pregnant and birthed in the last nine years at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital between January 2014 to December 2022. Data recorded included patient demographics, type of stoma, indication for stoma, need for additional abdominal surgeries, method of conception, pregnancy complications, length of stay, neonatal outcomes and post pregnancy stomal complications.In total, there were 16 births from 13 mothers with stomas. Of 10 births to IBD patients, 40% experienced a serious stomal complication. Caesarean section (CS) rate was 90% for IBD and 83% for non‐IBD. In‐vitro fertilisation rates were 40% in IBD patients and 0% in non‐IBD patients. The average gestational age at delivery was 36 weeks in IBD and 35 weeks non‐IBD patients. Neonates delivered to IBD mothers had a birth weight under 2500g in 40% of cases and in non IBD mothers at 33.3% (p = 0.62). Of the sixteen births there was five complications (31.25%) associated with the stoma either during pregnancy or during the sixty‐day postpartum period.Pregnancy in stoma patients is a rare occurrence and appears to be associated with high rates of CS, preterm delivery, low birth weight and stomal complication. Aim Methods Results Conclusions In March 2021, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare revised the optimal gestational weight gain standards. In this study, we examined whether this revision affected gestational weight gain and low birth weight rates.We analyzed the records of singleton pregnant women who underwent checkups from their 1st trimester and delivered at our institute after 37 weeks between 2020 and 2021 (before the revision) and between 2022 and 2023 (after the revision). Pregnancy outcomes were assessed in the following four groups stratified by pre‐pregnancy body mass index (BMI): underweight (BMI: <18.5 kg/m2), normal‐weight (BMI: 18.5–24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI: 25–29.9 kg/m2), and obese (BMI: ≥30 kg/m2). Leaflets on the optimal gestational weight gain standards for each group were distributed to all pregnant women at the first prenatal checkup.In each group, gestational weight gain did not change before and after the revision, with the corresponding values of 10.8 kg and 11.1 kg in the underweight (p = 0.94), 10.7 kg and 10.4 kg in the normal weight (p = 0.14), 9.7 kg and 9.2 kg in the overweight (p = 0.32), and 7.4 kg and 6.7 kg in the obese (p = 0.44) groups. Furthermore, the prevalence of low birth weight did not decrease in all groups.No significant differences in gestational weight gain or low birth weight were observed after the revision of the 2021 gestational weight gain recommendations. Metformin is the first‐line medication for type 2 diabetes. It is effective and safe, provided some caution is taken in specific populations. In patients with chronic kidney disease, metformin may provide long‐term benefits, and it is a first‐line therapy for diabetes, but the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) must be assessed regularly, to minimize the risk for metformin accumulation. When eGFR is 30‐60 mL/min/1.73m2, the dose should be reconsidered, and sick‐days education provided. Metformin should be discontinued when eGFR falls below 30 mL/min/1.73m2. Metformin accumulation may increase the risk for lactic acidosis if concomitant risk factors for hyperlactataemia (liver or respiratory insufficiency, sepsis, acute heart failure) are present; in these conditions, metformin is contraindicated, even although the available evidence is reassuring. Patients on metformin often complain of gastrointestinal side effects (mainly diarrhoea and nausea) during therapy initiation, but they may sometimes occur after years of stable therapy. These usually resolve if the dose is carefully titrated, or by switching to the extended‐release formulation. Patients with obesity may benefit from the significant, although modest, metformin‐associated weight loss and appetite reduction. During pregnancy, metformin is associated with a reduction of pregnancy complications, especially in obese women, but some concern remains, because metformin crosses the placenta, and it is associated with a significantly lower mean birth weight than insulin. In the elderly, gastrointestinal tolerability and renal function must be reassessed more often. Urban communities in the United States were transformed at the end of the twentieth century by a rapid decline in neighborhood crime and violence. We leverage that sharp decline in violence to estimate the relationship between violent crime rates and racial disparities in birth outcomes. Combining birth certificate data from US counties with the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting statistics from 1992 to 2002, we show that lower crime rates are associated with substantially smaller Black-White disparities in birth weight, low birth weight, and small for gestational age. These associations are stronger in more segregated counties, suggesting that the impacts of the crime decline may have been concentrated in places with larger disparities in exposure to crime. We also estimate birth outcome disparities under the counterfactual that the crime decline did not occur and show that reductions in crime statistically explain between one-fifth and one-half of the overall reduction in Black-White birth weight, LBW, and SGA disparities that occurred during the 1990s. Drawing on recent literature showing that exposure to violent crime has negative causal effects on birth outcomes, which in turn influence life-course outcomes, we argue that these results suggest that changes in national crime rates have implications for urban health inequality. This study aimed to investigate the effects of prenatal docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation on pregnancy outcomes through a systematic review and meta-analysis. We hypothesized that prenatal DHA intake through supplements will improve pregnancy outcomes. Detailed literature search was performed using online databases such as PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar till November 2022, to identify the randomized controlled trials (RCT) with maternal intake of DHA supplementation during the latter half of pregnancy compared to the placebo/control. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, nine RCTs involving 5710 subjects were included. This meta-analysis showed that DHA supplementation (450-800 mg/day) was associated with a significantly higher birth weight of infants (Inverse variance [IV]: 101.71 [57.36-146.06] at 95% CI, P =.00001, I2 = 0%), and fewer low birth weights (LBWs) (Mantel–Haenszel [M–H]: 0.53 [0.33-0.86] at 95% CI, P =.01, I2 = 72%), with lesser but statistically insignificant pre-term births (PTB) (M–H: -0.02 [-0.04 to 0.00] at 95% CI, P =.07, I2 = 0%) compared to the placebo. OBJECTIVE: To examine temporal trends and risk factors for congenital syphilis in newborn hospitalizations and to evaluate the association between adverse outcomes and congenital syphilis and health care utilization for newborn hospitalizations complicated by congenital syphilis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, crosssectional study using data from the National Inpatient Sample to identify newborn hospitalizations in the United States between 2016 and 2020. Newborns with congenital syphilis were identified with International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Adverse outcomes, hospital length of stay, and hospital costs were examined. The annual percent change was calculated to assess congenital syphilis trend. A multivariable Poisson regression model with robust error variance was used to examine the association between congenital syphilis and adverse outcomes. Adjusted relative risks (RRs) with 95% CIs were calculated. A multivariable generalized linear regression model was used to examine the association between congenital syphilis and hospital length of stay and hospital costs. Adjusted mean ratios with 95% CIs were calculated. RESULTS: Of 18,119,871 newborn hospitalizations in the United States between 2016 and 2020, the rate of congenital syphilis increased over time (annual percent change 24.6%, 95% CI, 13.0-37.3). Newborn race and ethnicity, insurance, household income, year of admission, and hospital characteristics were associated with congenital syphilis. In multivariable models, congenital syphilis was associated with preterm birth before 37 weeks of gestation (adjusted RR 2.22, 95% CI, 2.02-2.44) and preterm birth before 34 weeks of gestation (adjusted RR 2.39, 95% CI, 2.01-2.84); however, there was no association with low birth weight or neonatal in-hospital death. Compared with newborns without congenital syphilis, hospital length of stay (adjusted mean ratio 3.53, 95% CI, 3.38-3.68) and hospital costs (adjusted mean ratio 4.93, 95% CI, 4.57-5.32) were higher among those with congenital syphilis. Ethiopia is one of the sub‐Saharan African countries where underweight among women of reproductive age is high, and it is predisposing to low birth weight, preterm birth, and reduced resistance to infections. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and drinking water polluted with disease‐causing microorganisms lead to undernutrition. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between WASH and underweight among women of reproductive age at Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS), Southern Ethiopia. A community‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted at Arba Minch HDSS, South Ethiopia, from April to May 2022. Women of reproductive age were included in the study. Data were collected using a pre‐tested questionnaire and checklist. Multivariate analysis was conducted to assess the association separately for WASH indicators with underweight status of the women by adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval was used to assess the association. The prevalence of underweight and overweight/obesity among women of reproductive age was 7.82% (95% CI: 5.60, 10.81) and 12.32% (95% CI: 9.50, 15.83), respectively. Latrine hygiene and use were significantly associated with being underweight. The odds of being underweight among those who use clean latrine were 0.43 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.92) compared to those who use unclean latrine or do not have toilet facilities. The utilization of clean latrine facilities is negatively associated with being underweight among women of reproductive age. Introduction: Jejunoileal atresia is one of the most common types of gastrointestinal atresia with an incidence rate of 1 in 5000 births, causing neonatal obstruction. While survival rates are high in developed countries, our study investigates the persistently lower survival rates in developing countries. This study evaluates specific prognostic factors linked to mortality at our institution. Methods: A retrospective study in a tertiary hospital in Surabaya over a period of 3 years was used to examine factors associated with jejunoileal atresia. The independent variables containing demographic and operative data were extracted from the medical records and analyzed using SPSS 22. Results: The study group consisted equally of male and female patients (n=12 each). A high mortality rate of 50% was observed (n=12), notably higher than reports from developed regions. The majority were full-term (n=15, 62.5%), with half (n=12) presenting low birth weight. Delays in surgery over 48 hours were common (n=17, 70.8%), and many had additional anomalies (n=15, 62.5%). Type 1 jejunoileal atresia was prevalent in intraoperative findings, affecting nearly half the cases (n=10, 41.7%). Ileostomies were frequently performed (n=15, 62.5%). Bivariate analysis indicated that low birth weight significantly correlated with increased mortality (p=0.009). Conclusion: Our findings reinforce that low birth weight is a critical prognostic factor for mortality in neonates with jejunoileal atresia, suggesting a need for targeted interventions in this demographic. Introduction: Jejunoileal Atresia exhibits a fluctuating survival rate, influenced by factors such as Low Birth Weight (LBW), Small Gestational Age (SGA), and sepsis. Our objective was to compare and identify prognostic factors between Simple and Complex Jejunoileal Atresia. Methods: This retrospective study involved the analysis of medical records from neonates with Jejunoileal atresia who underwent surgery at our hospital from January 2017 to April 2021. Results: We found 25 neonates, 12 males and 13 females. We discovered 9 patients with LBW, 7 with SGA, and 15 with preoperative sepsis. In terms of type, 11 patients have a simple type and 14 have a complex type; from location, 13 patients have Jejunal atresia and 12 have Ileal atresia. overall survival rate is 40%. The survival rate for Complex type is 4 patients (28.6%), whereas survival for Simple type is 6 patients (54,5%), although not significant (p=0.241). Significant only found in a location that jejunal has a worse prognosis(p=0,008). Prognostic factors such as LBW (p=0.229) has 2 survival patients (22,2%), SGA (p=0.179) only has 1 survivor (14,3%), but 5 of 6 patients are in the complex type and all die, the survival for preoperative sepsis are 6 patients (40%) (p=1.000). The shortest median survival is LBW in 39 days, sepsis increases after surgery to 22 patients (88%) with 14 patients dying from sepsis. Conclusion: The notably low survival rate observed in our study aligns with identified prognostic factors, emphasizing the need for further exploration and in-depth investigation. Simple Summary: Recently: more attention has been given to low-birth-weight calves, often without considering gestation length. Similar to human medicine, calves classified as small for gestational age (SGA) weigh below the 10th percentile at birth. The present study aimed to investigate the long-term effects on fertility, productive performance, and overall survival in Holstein Friesian (HF) heifers born SGA. We found that while SGA calves showed initial catch-up growth at six months of age, they were still significantly lighter at twelve months. SGA heifers required significantly more inseminations to conceive compared to their average (AGA) and large (LGA) counterparts. Additionally, more SGA heifers were culled during their first lactation and had lower survival rates to the second calving. SGA heifers also had a higher risk of leaving the herd prematurely. Although overall lifespan and total milk yield were similar among all groups, SGA heifers produced less milk per productive day. This study reveals that HF calves born SGA face significant long-term health and productivity challenges, emphasizing the need for further research on the economic impact of rearing SGA heifers. Chi-squared analysis assessed culling and survival rates, and linear mixed-effect models evaluated the impact of gestational age group (small, average, or large for gestational age, respectively, SGA, AGA, and LGA) on growth, fertility, milk yield, and lifespan. SGA calves showed catch-up growth at six months but weighed significantly less at twelve months (p = 0.003). Age at first insemination and calving did not differ significantly, although SGA heifers required more inseminations (2.3 ± 1.50) compared to AGA and LGA heifers (1.7 ± 0.98 and 1.5 ± 0.89, respectively, p = 0.006). SGA calves tended to be culled more during the first lactation than AGA calves (25.0% vs. 11.9%, p = 0.078) and showed lower survival to second calving (p = 0.019) compared to AGA and LGA heifers. The Kaplan–Meier analysis indicated a tendency for gestational age to affect overall survival (p = 0.1), with SGA heifers having a higher risk of leaving the herd prematurely (p = 0.035, hazard ratio = 1.53). Milk yield per productive day was significantly lower in SGA heifers (21.2 ± 8.73 kg) compared to AGA and LGA heifers (26.9 ± 5.01 kg and 26.3 ± 3.38 kg, respectively, p = 0.006). Background & Objective: Pregnancy in women diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes mellitus poses a higher risk of experiencing complications related to the health of the fetus, the mother, and the newborn, along with potential obstetric issues. The objective of this study was to examine the maternal and fetal outcomes, as well as complications faced by pregnant women with type-1 diabetes, and to identify potential preventable factors. Methods: This retrospective cohort study, conducted at Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology (BIDE), Baqai Medical University, Karachi, Pakistan (January 2022 - January 2023), focused on registered pregnancies of women with Type-1 diabetes. A predesigned questionnaire recorded demographic information, diabetes and obstetric history, clinical details, treatment specifics, maternal, perinatal, and neonatal outcomes. Results: This study included 100 women with pre-existing Type-1 diabetes (mean age: 15.11 ± 5.64 years at diabetes diagnosis). Of these, 72% reported unplanned pregnancies, with a mean HbA1C at conception 8.29%. Median gestational age at delivery was 32.15 ± 10.82 weeks. Delivery outcomes included 40% normal vaginal deliveries and 60% C-sections (9% emergency, 51% elective). Stillbirths occurred in 14 cases, while 16 women experienced one miscarriage, seven had two, and 10 had three miscarriages. Glycemic targets (fasting) were achieved in 55 women, and post-meal targets only in 29, whereas, neonatal complications included hypoglycemia in 13 and low birth weight in 12 neonates. Conclusion: The high frequency of unplanned pregnancies and cesarean sections along with poor management of prepregnancy care and poor glycemic control results in compromised maternal and perinatal outcomes in this high-risk group. Aim: For women, being underweight increases their susceptibility to osteoporosis, anemia, and other conditions and affects the weight of their infants and the well‐being of future generations. This study examined the association between low pre‐pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and low birthweight using health insurance claims data and health checkup data, including weight measurements. Methods: We used health insurance claims data and health checkup data (JMDC, Tokyo, Japan) of women and their newborns in Japan between 2006 and 2020. We used checkup data, which included more accurate weight measurements and blood test‐based diagnoses of anemia and hyperlipidemia compared to self‐reported data. Maternal pre‐pregnancy BMI was compared across three groups: underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2), and overweight (BMI ≥25.0 kg/m2). The primary outcome was low birthweight (<2500 g), and secondary outcome was preterm childbirth. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to compare outcomes in the three groups by BMI. The underweight BMI group was considered as the reference group. A subgroup analysis was performed by maternal age. Results: In total, 16 363 mothers (underweight, 3418 [21%], normal weight, 11 493 [70%], and overweight, 1452 [8.9%]) were included. The risk of primary outcome (low birthweight) was significantly lower in the normal weight group than in the underweight group (4.6% vs. 5.7%; adjusted odds ratio 0.78 [95% confidence interval: 0.65–0.96]). In the subgroup analyses, no significant differences were noted in the incidences of low birthweight and preterm childbirth between maternal age groups. Aims: We aimed to systematically synthesize the current published literature on neonatal growth outcomes associated with antiseizure medication (ASM) use during pregnancy. Methods: We searched seven databases, from inception to 23 March 2022. We investigated small for gestational age (SGA) and low birth weight (LBW) as primary outcomes and birth weight, birth height, cephalization index and head circumference as secondary outcomes. The primary analysis included pregnant people exposed to any ASM compared with unexposed pregnant people. Subgroup analysis included ASM class analysis, within epilepsy group analysis and polytherapy compared to monotherapy. Results: We screened 15 720 citations and included 65 studies in the review. Exposed pregnant people had a significantly increased risk of SGA relative risk (RR) 1.33 (95% CI 1.18 to 1.50, I2 74%), LBW RR 1.54 (95% CI 1.33 to 1.77, I2 67%), and decreased birth weight with a mean difference (MD) of −118.87 (95% CI −161.03 to −76.71, I2 42%) g. A non‐significant risk change in birth height and head circumference was observed. In subgroup analysis, ASM polytherapy, within epilepsy and ASM class analysis were also associated with an increased risk of SGA and LBW. Conclusions: This meta‐analysis demonstrates that pregnant people exposed to ASMs have a significantly increased risk of adverse fetal growth outcomes including SGA and LBW and decreased birth weight compared to unexposed pregnant people. Excessive weight loss may increase the risk of meconium obstruction and intestinal perforation. As these infants display oliguria followed by polyuria, we embarked on a diuresis‐led volume replacement strategy as of January 2020.This single‐centre analysis presents data of infants <1000 g birth weight surviving for more than 3 days admitted 2017–2019 (n = 217, daily volume increase) versus 2020–2022 (n = 2022, diuresis‐led volume replacement).The second cohort had lower gestational age (median [interquartile range]: 253/7 [243/7–264/7] vs. 263/7 [251/7–282/7] weeks), less antenatal steroids (58% vs. 69%), more indomethacin (66% vs. 47%) and higher initial diuresis (5.6 [4.9–6.8] vs. 4.8 [4.2–5.5] mL/kg/h) but did not differ by relative weight loss at Day 7 of life. Employing binary logistic regression with gestational age, antenatal steroids and indomethacin as covariates, the cohorts did not differ by rates of patent ductus arteriosus, abdominal surgery or severe retinopathy of prematurity, while there were significant declines in sepsis (from 32% to 19%), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (from 26% to 23%) and mortality (from 13% to 7%).Diuresis‐led volume replacement appears to be safe and maybe beneficial. According to World Health Organization (WHO), iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is considered the most prevalent nutritional deficiency worldwide, affecting approximately 30% of the global population. While gastrointestinal bleeding and menstruation in women are the primary causes of IDA, insufficient dietary iron intake and reduced iron absorption contribute to the condition. The aim of IDA treatment is to restore iron stores and normalise haemoglobin levels in affected patients. Iron plays a critical role in various cellular mechanisms, including oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymatic activity. During pregnancy, the mother's blood volume increases, and the growing foetus requires a significant increase in iron. Iron deficiency during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes such as maternal illness, low birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restriction. Iron supplementation is commonly used to treat IDA; however, not all patients benefit from this therapy due to factors such as low compliance and ineffectiveness. In the past, IV iron therapy was underutilised due to its unfavourable and occasionally unsafe side effects. Nevertheless, the development of new type II and III iron complexes has improved compliance, tolerability, efficacy, and safety profiles. This article aims to provide an updated overview of the diagnosis and management of IDA during pregnancy. Objectives: To assess the association between air pollution exposure and housing context during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes. Methods: We linked air pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency and housing data from the American Community Survey with birth records from Wisconsin counties over a 9-year period. We calculated average daily pregnancy exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone and modeled its relationship to preterm birth, low birthweight and NICU admission, adjusting for individual characteristics and housing context. Results: Ozone exposure and housing cost-burden had substantive and statistically significant negative associations with birthweight and gestational age, and positive associations with NICU admission, while a poor-quality housing environment had a significant negative effect on weeks of gestation. Fine particulate matter exposure had a negligible correlation with these outcomes. Conclusions for practice: An additional tenth of one part-per-million daily average exposure to ozone is associated with a 33 g decrease in birthweight. This decrease in birthweight is about the same size as the association of gestational diabetes (32 g), larger than the association of chronic hypertension (22 g), and about 40% the size of the effect of smoking during pregnancy on birthweight (84 g). Given the magnitudes of the associations with atmospheric ozone and adverse birth outcomes, reducing atmospheric ozone should be a public health priority. Inclusion of controls for housing cost-burden and poor-quality housing reduces the magnitude of the association with mothers who identify as Black, suggesting the importance of these structural factors in understanding adverse birth outcomes by race. Significance: What is already known on this subject: It is well documented that poor birth outcomes are linked to experiences of social and economic disadvantage, however, environmental correlates of poor birth outcomes are under-researched. Existing research does not account for the ways in which environmental, sociodemographic, and structural factors could confound each other given the concentration of environmental pollutants in communities of color and low-income communities. Objective The study aims to describe our experience with the implementation of phenobarbital as a primary sedation strategy during neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Study Design Retrospective chart review in a level IV neonatal intensive care unit between 2011 and 2021 comparing neonatal ECMO patients before and after the implementation of a sedation-analgesia (SA) protocol using scheduled phenobarbital as the primary sedative. Groups were compared for neonatal and ECMO characteristics, cumulative SA doses, and in-hospital outcomes. Comparison between groups was performed using Mann–Whitney test on continuous variables and chi-square on nominal variables. Results Forty-two patients were included, 23 preprotocol and 19 postprotocol. Birth, pre-ECMO, and ECMO clinical characteristics were similar between groups except for a lower birth weight in the postprotocol group (p = 0.024). After standardization of phenobarbital SA protocol, there was a statistically significant reduction in median total morphine dose (31.38–17.65 mg/kg, p = 0.006) and median total midazolam dose (36.21–6.36 mg/kg, p < 0.001). There was also a reduction in median total days on morphine by 7.5 days (p = 0.026) and midazolam by 6.6 days (p = 0.003). There were no differences in ECMO duration or in-hospital outcomes between groups. Conclusion In this cohort, short-term use of phenobarbital as primary sedation strategy during neonatal ECMO was associated with reduced opioid and midazolam burden. Such reduction, however, did not affect in-hospital outcomes. Key Points Prolonged sedation on ECMO puts infants at risk for iatrogenic withdrawal. Summary: Introduction: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are frequently diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, i.e. the most fertile period for women. The potential impact of IBD on pregnancy is therefore a frequent issue. Study objective: To determine the impact of disease activity during pregnancy on the obstetric prognosis of women with IBD. Methods: Gastroenterological and obstetric data were collected for patients for all consecutive patients with IBD and pregnancy followed up at Amiens University Hospital (Amiens, France) between 2007 and 2021. Obstetrics outcome of patients with and without active disease were compared. Results: One hundred patients were included (81 with Crohn's Disease for 198 pregnancies, 19 with Ulcerative Colitis for 37 pregnancies). Patients with active IBD (21 patients, 24 pregnancies) were more likely to be admitted to hospital during pregnancy (66.6, vs. 5.2% in the inactive IBD group; p < 0.001), to give birth prematurely (mean term: 36.77 weeks of amenorrhoea (WA) vs. 38.7 WA, respectively; p = 0.02) and to experience very premature delivery (before 32 WA: 12.5 vs. 1.4%, respectively; p = 0.02). Patients with active disease had a shorter term at birth (38.4 WA, vs. 39.8 WA in the inactive disease group; p < 0.0001), a lower birth weight (2707 g vs. 3129 g, respectively; p = 0.01) and higher caesarean section rate (54.2 vs. 16.9%, respectively; p = 0.03). Conclusion: Women with IBD patients are at risk of pregnancy related complications, especially when IBD is active. Aim: This study aimed to assess the platelet parameters and their prognostic value for perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: This retrospective study involved 180 participants, 90 pregnant women with SLE and 90 healthy pregnant women. Clinical and demographic variables including routine first-trimester neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and platelet parameters such as platelet distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT) were compared between the groups. The perinatal outcomes of the whole study group were also compared. Results: SLE patients had lower leukocyte (p = 0.001), lymphocyte (p = 0.001) and platelet counts (p = 0.018), higher PDW (p = 0.002), MPV (p = 0.001), NLR (p = 0.008) and PLR (p = 0.015) and lower PCT (p = 0.015) than the control group. The groups had no significant difference in hemoglobin levels (p = 0.936). SLE patients had higher rates of cesarean section (p = 0.002), small for gestational age (SGA) (p = 0.019) and stillbirth (p = 0.017) and lower birth weight (p = 0.001) than the control group. PCT was a significant predictor of stillbirth with a cut-off value of 0.21, sensitivity of 64.3% and specificity of 83.3% (AUC: 0.843, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Pregnant women with SLE have altered platelet parameters and increased inflammatory markers compared to healthy pregnant women. Purpose: To determine the association between fetal fraction (FF) levels in cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) testing and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This retrospective cohort study, conducted at a single center, involved 2063 pregnant women with normal 1st and 2nd trimester non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) results between 2016 and 2021. Pregnancy outcomes were examined by determining the < 4% and < 5th percentile (3.6%) cut-off values for low fetal fraction (LFF). Pregnancy outcomes were also examined by dividing the FF into population-based quartiles. Adverse pregnancy outcomes were pregnancy-induced hypertensive diseases (PIHD), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), spontaneous preterm birth (PTB), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), small for gestational age (SGA), large for gestational age (LGA), low birth weight (LBW), macrosomia, and 1st and 5th minutes low APGAR scores (< 7). Results: PIHD was significantly higher in LFF (< 4% and < 5th percentile) cases (p = 0.015 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, in population-based quartiles of FF, PIHD did not differ significantly between groups. Composite adverse maternal outcomes were significantly higher in the FF < 4% group (p = 0.042). When analyzes were adjusted for maternal age, BMI, and gestational age at NIPT, significance was maintained at < 4%, < 5th percentile LFF for PIHD, and < 4% LFF for composite adverse maternal outcomes. However, there was no significant relationship between LFF with GDM, ICP and PTB. Additionally, there was no significant association between low APGAR scores, SGA, LGA, LBW, macrosomia, and LFF concerning neonatal outcomes. Purpose: Preeclampsia affects between 2 to 8% of pregnancies worldwide and is associated with significant adverse outcomes for both mothers and their offspring. The present study aims to investigate whether there is a correlation between early age at menarche and an increased risk of developing preeclampsia and experiencing adverse neonatal outcomes. Methods: The study involved a review of medical records of 4227 pregnant women who gave birth at The First Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu Medical College between January 2017 and December 2022. The collected data included demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations of preeclampsia, laboratory indicators, gestational complications, and neonatal outcomes. Pregnant women were categorized into four groups based on their age at menarche (≤ 12, 13, 14, and ≥ 15 years). Logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between different menarche age groups and the risk of preeclampsia and adverse neonatal outcomes. Results: Pregnant women who had an age at menarche of ≤ 12 years had a higher risk of preeclampsia than women who had their menarche at 13, 14, and ≥ 15 years of age, with adjusted ORs (95% CIs) for preeclampsia of 1.00 (reference), 0.78 (0.45–0.91), 0.76 (0.59–0.88), and 0.73 (0.56–0.94), respectively. The predictive efficacy of age at menarche for preeclampsia was assessed with a sensitivity and specificity of 85.2% and 76.4%, respectively, and an AUC of 0.82. Moreover, infants born to women with an age at menarche of ≤ 12 years had a higher risk of adverse neonatal outcomes, including small for gestational age, preterm birth, low birth weight, neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, and neonatal intensive care unit admission. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that an early age at menarche is associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia and adverse neonatal outcomes. This information could be useful for obstetricians to identify women at risk for preeclampsia early on and implement timely interventions to reduce the incidence of preeclampsia and associated adverse neonatal outcomes. Objective: To assess the prevalence of adenomyosis at pathologic examination, and its association with obstetric complications, peripartum maternal clinical characteristics and neonatal birth weight in patients undergoing postpartum hysterectomy due to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Methods: A multicenter, observational, retrospective, cohort study was carried out including all women who underwent postpartum hysterectomy due to PPH at gestational week 23+0 or later, between January 2010 and May 2023. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the presence of adenomyosis at pathologic examination, and were compared for obstetric complications, peripartum maternal clinical characteristics, and neonatal birth weight. Results: The histologically‐based prevalence of adenomyosis in patients undergoing postpartum hysterectomy due to PPH was 39.4%. Adenomyosis was associated with a longer hospitalization time (regression coefficient: 4.43 days, 95% CI: 0.34–8.52, P = 0.034) and a higher risk of hypertensive disorders (OR: 5.82, 95% CI: 1.38–24.46, P = 0.016), threatened preterm labor (OR: 3.34, 95% CI: 1.08–10.31, P = 0.036), urgent/emergency C‐section (OR: 24.15, 95% CI: 2.60–223.96, P = 0.005), postpartum maternal complications (OR: 4.96, 95% CI: 1.48–16.67, P = 0.012), maternal intensive care unit admission (OR: 3.56, 95% CI: 1.05–12.05, P = 0.041), and low birth weight neonates (OR: 3.8, 95% CI: 1.32–11.02, P = 0.013). Conclusion: In patients undergoing postpartum hysterectomy due to PPH, adenomyosis is a highly prevalent condition among, and is associated with adverse obstetric, maternal, and neonatal outcomes. Aim: This study aimed to address the critical need for more accurate growth reference charts for preterm infants, with a particular focus on low‐ and very low‐birth‐weight infants. Methods: The subjects were recruited at a single tertiary centre. The cohort comprised singleton and twin infants born before 37 weeks of gestation, with data collected from 2000 to 2016. Standardised measurements of body parameters were recorded in this mixed longitudinal survey. LMS method was utilised for data analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics Version 21. The validation with another new cohort was executed. Results: A total of 1781 infants (52.5% boys) met the inclusion criteria. The median gestational age at birth was 30 weeks, with a median birth weight of 1350 grams. The main findings included the construction of ImaGrow charts for low‐ and very low‐birth‐weight infants and significant differences in growth trajectories compared to Fenton+WHO charts. Conclusion: Our comprehensive growth references, ImaGrow, are based on a long‐term auxological assessment of preterm infants and differ from charts derived from size‐at‐birth standards or charts for term babies. Purpose: This systematic review aimed to determine the effects of maternal exposure to bisphosphonates (BPs) during pregnancy on neonatal outcomes. It aimed to disclosfe the impact of BPs on neonates and identify aspects that require further investigation. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Science Direct, LILACS, EMBASE, and Web of Science was conducted until August 2022, with no time restrictions. The selection criteria included studies published in English that evaluated pregnant women who were exposed to BPs. Results: From an initial pool of 2169 studies, 13 met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. These studies collectively included 106 women (108 pregnancies) who were exposed to BPs either before orduring pregnancy. A summary of the key characteristics of the selected studies and the risk of bias assessment are provided. Exposure to BPs occurs at various stages of pregnancy, with different indications for BP treatment. The most frequently reported neonatal outcomes were spontaneous abortion, congenital malformations, hypocalcemia, preterm birth, and low birth weight. Conclusion: Although previous reports have linked BPs before or during pregnancy with adverse neonatal outcomes, these associations should be interpreted with caution. Given the complexity of these findings, further research is necessary to provide more definitive insights to guide clinical decisions regarding the use of BPs in pregnant women. Background Thoracoscopic repair of esophageal atresia (EA) with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is becoming an increasingly widespread technique; there is still controversy about its indication in certain patients. Our objective is to analyze if potential risk factors such as major congenital heart disease (CHD) or low birth weight (LBW) are a limitation to this approach. Methods Retrospective study (2017–2021) of patients with EA and distal TEF who underwent thoracoscopic repair were included. Patients with LBW less than 2,000 g or major CHD were compared with the rest. Results Twenty-five patients underwent thoracoscopic surgery. Nine patients (36%) had major CHD. Five of them (20%) were LBW less than 2,000 g, and only 8% (2/25) presented both risk factors. There were no differences in terms of operative time, conversion rate, tolerance evaluated with gasometric parameters (pO2 , pCO2 , pH) or complications (anastomotic leak and stricture, both early or during follow-up) in patients with major CHD and LBW (1,473 ± 319 vs. 2,664 ± 402 g). One conversion to thoracotomy was performed in a neonate weighing 1,050 g due to anesthetic intolerance. There was no recurrence of TEF. One patient died at the age of 9 months, due to major uncorrectable heart disease. Conclusion Thoracoscopic repair of EA/TEF is feasible technique in patients with CHD or LBW, with similar results to other patients. Background: Low birth weight is recognized as a pivotal risk factor affecting child survival and growth. Although Bangladesh has made commendable progress in public health, an infant mortality rate of 38 per 1000 live births and a 16% prevalence of low birth weight remain significant concerns compared to other developing countries. This situation poses a significant challenge for the formulation of future health policies in Bangladesh. As a result, this study aims to identify potential risk factors contributing to low birth weight and infant mortality among children in Bangladesh. Methods: The data is extracted from the 2014 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. The response variables are infant mortality and low birth weight. In the bivariate analysis, Log‐rank tests and Chi‐square tests of independence were conducted. Cox proportional hazards and binary logistic regression models were utilized to determine the impact of risk factors on infant mortality and low birth weight. Results: This study identified several significant factors associated with children's low birth weight, including wealth index, parental education, birth order, twin births, mother's body mass index, and child sex. Additionally, wealth index, parental education, twin status, media exposure, birth order, antenatal care visits, prenatal care assistance, and low birth weight were identified as potential risk factors for infant mortality in Bangladesh. Conclusion: This study revealed that maternal and child characteristics, along with knowledge about child health care during pregnancy, can potentially reduce the risk of low birth weight and infant mortality among children in Bangladesh. To improve child health and survival, policymakers should prioritize community‐based health education programs, and encourage parents to seek healthcare information from institutional medical facilities during pregnancy and after birth.
