Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising technique for future machine type communication systems due to its superior spectral efficiency and capability for supporting massive connectivity. This paper proposes a novel class of sparse codebooks to improve the error rate performance of SCMA in the presence of phase noise (PN). Specifically, we first analyze the error rate performance of SCMA impaired by looking into the pair-wise error probability. Then, a novel codebook design metric, called minimum PN metric (MPNM), is proposed. In addition, to design PN resilient codebooks, we propose a novel pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-based low projection mother constellation (LP-MC), called LP-PAM. The codebooks for different users are obtained by rotating and scaling the MC, where the phase rotation angles and scaling factors for different users are optimized by maximizing the proposed MPNM. Numerical results show that the proposed PNCBs have larger MPNM values and achieve improved error rate performance than the-state-of-the-art codebooks.

In this paper, we present the design and benchmark of an innovative sensor, ViTacTip, which fulfills the demand for advanced multi-modal sensing in a compact design. A notable feature of ViTacTip is its transparent skin, which incorporates a `see-through-skin' mechanism. This mechanism aims at capturing detailed object features upon contact, significantly improving both vision-based and proximity perception capabilities. In parallel, the biomimetic tips embedded in the sensor's skin are designed to amplify contact details, thus substantially augmenting tactile and derived force perception abilities. To demonstrate the multi-modal capabilities of ViTacTip, we developed a multi-task learning model that enables simultaneous recognition of hardness, material, and textures. To assess the functionality and validate the versatility of ViTacTip, we conducted extensive benchmarking experiments, including object recognition, contact point detection, pose regression, and grating identification. To facilitate seamless switching between various sensing modalities, we employed a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based approach. Semantic segmentation requires labour-intensive labelling tasks to obtain the supervision signals, and because of this issue, it is encouraged that using domain adaptation, which transfers information from the existing labelled source domains to unlabelled or weakly labelled target domains, is essential. However, it is intractable to find a well-generalised representation which can describe two domains due to probabilistic or geometric difference between the two domains. This paper presents a novel method, the Conditional and Inter-coder Connected Latent Diffusion (CICLD) based Semantic Segmentation Model, to advance unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for semantic segmentation tasks. Leveraging the strengths of latent diffusion models and adversarial learning, our method effectively bridges the gap between synthetic and real-world imagery. CICLD incorporates a conditioning mechanism to improve contextual understanding during segmentation and an inter-coder connection to preserve fine-grained details and spatial hierarchies. Additionally, adversarial learning aligns latent feature distributions across source, mixed, and target domains, further enhancing generalisation. Extensive experiments are conducted across three benchmark datasets-GTA5, Synthia, and Cityscape-shows that CICLD outperforms state-of-the-art UDA methods. Notably, the proposed method achieves a mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 74.4 for the GTA5 to Cityscape UDA setting and 67.2 mIoU for the Synthia to Cityscape UDA setting. This article introduces the ManiSkill-ViTac Challenge 2025, which focuses on learning contact-rich manipulation skills using both tactile and visual sensing. Expanding upon the 2024 challenge, ManiSkill-ViTac 2025 includes 3 independent tracks: tactile manipulation, tactile-vision fusion manipulation, and tactile sensor structure design. The challenge aims to push the boundaries of robotic manipulation skills, emphasizing the integration of tactile and visual data to enhance performance in complex, real-world tasks. Real-world datasets follow an imbalanced distribution, which poses significant challenges in rare-category object detection. Recent studies tackle this problem by developing re-weighting and re-sampling methods, that utilise the class frequencies of the dataset. However, these techniques focus solely on the frequency statistics and ignore the distribution of the classes in image space, missing important information. In contrast to them, we propose FRActal CALibration (FRACAL): a novel post-calibration method for long-tailed object detection. FRACAL devises a logit adjustment method that utilises the fractal dimension to estimate how uniformly classes are distributed in image space. During inference, it uses the fractal dimension to inversely downweight the probabilities of uniformly spaced class predictions achieving balance in two axes: between frequent and rare categories, and between uniformly spaced and sparsely spaced classes. FRACAL is a post-processing method and it does not require any training, also it can be combined with many off-the-shelf models such as one-stage sigmoid detectors and two-stage instance segmentation models. FRACAL boosts the rare class performance by up to 8.6% and surpasses all previous methods on LVIS dataset, while showing good generalisation to other datasets such as COCO, V3Det and OpenImages. The field of face recognition (FR) has undergone significant advancements with the rise of deep learning. Recently, the success of unsupervised learning and graph neural networks has demonstrated the effectiveness of data structure information. Considering that the FR task can leverage large-scale training data, which intrinsically contains significant structure information, we aim to investigate how to encode such critical structure information into the latent space. As revealed from our observations, directly aligning the structure information between the input and latent spaces inevitably suffers from an overfitting problem, leading to a structure collapse phenomenon in the latent space. To address this problem, we propose TopoFR, a novel FR model that leverages a topological structure alignment strategy called PTSA and a hard sample mining strategy named SDE. Concretely, PTSA uses persistent homology to align the topological structures of the input and latent spaces, effectively preserving the structure information and improving the generalization performance of FR model. To mitigate the impact of hard samples on the latent space structure, SDE accurately identifies hard samples by automatically computing structure damage score (SDS) for each sample, and directs the model to prioritize optimizing these samples. Experimental results on popular face benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our TopoFR over the state-of-the-art methods. Simulation has enabled unprecedented compute-scalable approaches to robot learning. However, many existing simulation frameworks typically support a narrow range of scenes/tasks and lack features critical for scaling generalizable robotics and sim2real. We introduce and open source ManiSkill3, the fastest state-visual GPU parallelized robotics simulator with contact-rich physics targeting generalizable manipulation. ManiSkill3 supports GPU parallelization of many aspects including simulation+rendering, heterogeneous simulation, pointclouds/voxels visual input, and more. Simulation with rendering on ManiSkill3 can run 10-1000x faster with 2-3x less GPU memory usage than other platforms, achieving up to 30,000+ FPS in benchmarked environments due to minimal python/pytorch overhead in the system, simulation on the GPU, and the use of the SAPIEN parallel rendering system. Tasks that used to take hours to train can now take minutes. We further provide the most comprehensive range of GPU parallelized environments/tasks spanning 12 distinct domains including but not limited to mobile manipulation for tasks such as drawing, humanoids, and dextrous manipulation in realistic scenes designed by artists or real-world digital twins. In addition, millions of demonstration frames are provided from motion planning, RL, and teleoperation. In recent years, advancements in optical tactile sensor technology have primarily centred on enhancing sensing precision and expanding the range of sensing modalities. To meet the requirements for more skilful manipulation, there should be a movement towards making tactile sensors more dynamic. In this paper, we introduce RoTip, a novel vision-based tactile sensor that is uniquely designed with an independently controlled joint and the capability to sense contact over its entire surface. The rotational capability of the sensor is particularly crucial for manipulating everyday objects, especially thin and flexible ones, as it enables the sensor to mobilize while in contact with the object's surface. The manipulation experiments demonstrate the ability of our proposed RoTip to manipulate rigid and flexible objects, and the full-finger tactile feedback and active rotation capabilities have the potential to explore more complex and precise manipulation tasks.

Vision-based tactile sensors (VBTSs) provide high-resolution tactile images crucial for robot in-hand manipulation. However, force sensing in VBTSs is underutilized due to the costly and time-intensive process of acquiring paired tactile images and force labels. In this study, we introduce a transferable force prediction model, TransForce, designed to leverage collected image-force paired data for new sensors under varying illumination colors and marker patterns while improving the accuracy of predicted forces, especially in the shear direction. Our model effectively achieves translation of tactile images from the source domain to the target domain, ensuring that the generated tactile images reflect the illumination colors and marker patterns of the new sensors while accurately aligning the elastomer deformation observed in existing sensors, which is beneficial to force prediction of new sensors. As such, a recurrent force prediction model trained with generated sequential tactile images and existing force labels is employed to estimate higher-accuracy forces for new sensors with lowest average errors of 0.69N (5.8\% in full work range) in $x$-axis, 0.70N (5.8\%) in $y$-axis, and 1.11N (6.9\%) in $z$-axis compared with models trained with single images. The experimental results also reveal that pure marker modality is more helpful than the RGB modality in improving the accuracy of force in the shear direction, while the RGB modality show better performance in the normal direction., Comment: Accepted to ICRA2025

Optical tactile sensors play a pivotal role in robot perception and manipulation tasks. The membrane of these sensors can be painted with markers or remain markerless, enabling them to function in either marker or markerless mode. However, this uni-modal selection means the sensor is only suitable for either manipulation or perception tasks. While markers are vital for manipulation, they can also obstruct the camera, thereby impeding perception. The dilemma of selecting between marker and markerless modes presents a significant obstacle. To address this issue, we propose a novel mode-switchable optical tactile sensing approach that facilitates transitions between the two modes. The marker-to-markerless transition is achieved through a generative model, whereas its inverse transition is realized using a sparsely supervised regressive model. Our approach allows a single-mode optical sensor to operate effectively in both marker and markerless modes without the need for additional hardware, making it well-suited for both perception and manipulation tasks. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our method. For perception tasks, our approach decreases the number of categories that include misclassified samples by 2 and improves contact area segmentation IoU by 3.53%. For manipulation tasks, our method attains a high success rate of 92.59% in slip detection. Measuring grasp stability is an important skill for dexterous robot manipulation tasks, which can be inferred from haptic information with a tactile sensor. Control policies have to detect rotational displacement and slippage from tactile feedback, and determine a re-grasp strategy in term of location and force. Classic stable grasp task only trains control policies to solve for re-grasp location with objects of fixed center of gravity. In this work, we propose a revamped version of stable grasp task that optimises both re-grasp location and gripping force for objects with unknown and moving center of gravity. We tackle this task with a model-free, end-to-end Transformer-based reinforcement learning framework. We show that our approach is able to solve both objectives after training in both simulation and in a real-world setup with zero-shot transfer. Cross-Modal Retrieval (CMR), which retrieves relevant items from one modality (e.g., audio) given a query in another modality (e.g., visual), has undergone significant advancements in recent years. This capability is crucial for robots to integrate and interpret information across diverse sensory inputs. However, the retrieval space in existing robotic CMR approaches often consists of only one modality, which limits the robot's performance. In this paper, we propose a novel CMR model that incorporates three different modalities, i.e., visual, audio and tactile, for enhanced multi-modal object retrieval, named as VAT-CMR. In this model, multi-modal representations are first fused to provide a holistic view of object features. To mitigate the semantic gaps between representations of different modalities, a dominant modality is then selected during the classification training phase to improve the distinctiveness of the representations, so as to improve the retrieval performance. To evaluate our proposed approach, we conducted a case study and the results demonstrate that our VAT-CMR model surpasses competing approaches. Optical tactile sensors provide robots with rich force information for robot grasping in unstructured environments. The fast and accurate calibration of three-dimensional contact forces holds significance for new sensors and existing tactile sensors which may have incurred damage or aging. However, the conventional neural-network-based force calibration method necessitates a large volume of force-labeled tactile images to minimize force prediction errors, with the need for accurate Force/Torque measurement tools as well as a time-consuming data collection process. To address this challenge, we propose a novel deep domain-adaptation force calibration method, designed to transfer the force prediction ability from a calibrated optical tactile sensor to uncalibrated ones with various combinations of domain gaps, including marker presence, illumination condition, and elastomer modulus. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed unsupervised force calibration method, with lowest force prediction errors of 0.102N (3.4\% in full force range) for normal force, and 0.095N (6.3\%) and 0.062N (4.1\%) for shear forces along the x-axis and y-axis, respectively. Computer-aided design (CAD) tools are increasingly popular in modern dental practice, particularly for treatment planning or comprehensive prognosis evaluation. In particular, the 2D panoramic X-ray image efficiently detects invisible caries, impacted teeth and supernumerary teeth in children, while the 3D dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in orthodontics and endodontics due to its low radiation dose. However, there is no open-access 2D public dataset for children's teeth and no open 3D dental CBCT dataset, which limits the development of automatic algorithms for segmenting teeth and analyzing diseases. The Semi-supervised Teeth Segmentation (STS) Challenge, a pioneering event in tooth segmentation, was held as a part of the MICCAI 2023 ToothFairy Workshop on the Alibaba Tianchi platform. This challenge aims to investigate effective semi-supervised tooth segmentation algorithms to advance the field of dentistry. In this challenge, we provide two modalities including the 2D panoramic X-ray images and the 3D CBCT tooth volumes. In Task 1, the goal was to segment tooth regions in panoramic X-ray images of both adult and pediatric teeth. Task 2 involved segmenting tooth sections using CBCT volumes. Limited labelled images with mostly unlabelled ones were provided in this challenge prompt using semi-supervised algorithms for training. In the preliminary round, the challenge received registration and result submission by 434 teams, with 64 advancing to the final round. This paper summarizes the diverse methods employed by the top-ranking teams in the STS MICCAI 2023 Challenge.

The activation function plays a crucial role in model optimisation, yet the optimal choice remains unclear. For example, the Sigmoid activation is the de-facto activation in balanced classification tasks, however, in imbalanced classification, it proves inappropriate due to bias towards frequent classes. In this work, we delve deeper in this phenomenon by performing a comprehensive statistical analysis in the classification and intermediate layers of both balanced and imbalanced networks and we empirically show that aligning the activation function with the data distribution, enhances the performance in both balanced and imbalanced tasks. To this end, we propose the Adaptive Parametric Activation (APA) function, a novel and versatile activation function that unifies most common activation functions under a single formula. APA can be applied in both intermediate layers and attention layers, significantly outperforming the state-of-the-art on several imbalanced benchmarks such as ImageNet-LT, iNaturalist2018, Places-LT, CIFAR100-LT and LVIS and balanced benchmarks such as ImageNet1K, COCO and V3DET. Tactile sensors, which provide information about the physical properties of objects, are an essential component of robotic systems. The visuotactile sensing technology with the merits of high resolution and low cost has facilitated the development of robotics from environment exploration to dexterous operation. Over the years, several reviews on visuotactile sensors for robots have been presented, but few of them discussed the significance of signal processing methods to visuotactile sensors. Apart from ingenious hardware design, the full potential of the sensory system toward designated tasks can only be released with the appropriate signal processing methods. This paper introduces RoTipBot, a novel robotic system for handling thin, flexible objects. Different from previous works that are limited to singulating them using suction cups or soft grippers, RoTipBot can grasp and count multiple layers simultaneously, emulating human handling in various environments. Specifically, we develop a novel vision-based tactile sensor named RoTip that can rotate and sense contact information around its tip. Equipped with two RoTip sensors, RoTipBot feeds multiple layers of thin, flexible objects into the centre between its fingers, enabling effective grasping and counting. RoTip's tactile sensing ensures both fingers maintain good contact with the object, and an adjustment approach is designed to allow the gripper to adapt to changes in the object. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the RoTip sensor and the RoTipBot approach. The results show that RoTipBot not only achieves a higher success rate but also grasps and counts multiple layers simultaneously -- capabilities not possible with previous methods. Furthermore, RoTipBot operates up to three times faster than state-of-the-art methods. The success of RoTipBot paves the way for future research in object manipulation using mobilised tactile sensors. Deformable object manipulation is a classical and challenging research area in robotics. Compared with rigid object manipulation, this problem is more complex due to the deformation properties including elastic, plastic, and elastoplastic deformation. In this paper, we describe a new deformable object manipulation method including soft contact simulation, manipulation learning, and sim-to-real transfer. We propose a novel approach utilizing Vision-Based Tactile Sensors (VBTSs) as the end-effector in simulation to produce observations like relative position, squeezed area, and object contour, which are transferable to real robots. For a more realistic contact simulation, a new simulation environment including elastic, plastic, and elastoplastic deformations is created. We utilize RL strategies to train agents in the simulation, and expert demonstrations are applied for challenging tasks. Finally, we build a real experimental platform to complete the sim-to-real transfer and achieve a 90% success rate on difficult tasks such as cylinder and sphere. To test the robustness of our method, we use plasticine of different hardness and sizes to repeat the tasks including cylinder and sphere. The experimental results show superior performances of deformable object manipulation with the proposed method.

Simulation is a widely used tool in robotics to reduce hardware consumption and gather large-scale data. Despite previous efforts to simulate optical tactile sensors, there remain challenges in efficiently synthesizing images and replicating marker motion under different contact loads. In this work, we propose a fast optical tactile simulator, named FOTS, for simulating optical tactile sensors. We utilize multi-layer perceptron mapping and planar shadow generation to simulate the optical response, while employing marker distribution approximation to simulate the motion of surface markers caused by the elastomer deformation. Experimental results demonstrate that FOTS outperforms other methods in terms of image generation quality and rendering speed, achieving 28.6 fps for optical simulation and 326.1 fps for marker motion simulation on a single CPU without GPU acceleration. In addition, we integrate the FOTS simulation model with physical engines like MuJoCo, and the peg-in-hole task demonstrates the effectiveness of our method in achieving zero-shot Sim2Real learning of tactile-motor robot manipulation skills. Controlling hand exoskeletons to assist individuals with grasping tasks poses a challenge due to the difficulty in understanding user intentions. We propose that most daily grasping tasks during activities of daily living (ADL) can be deduced by analyzing object geometries (simple and complex) from 3D point clouds. The study introduces PointGrasp, a real-time system designed for identifying household scenes semantically, aiming to support and enhance assistance during ADL for tailored end-to-end grasping tasks. The system comprises an RGB-D camera with an inertial measurement unit and a microprocessor integrated into a tendon-driven soft robotic glove. The RGB-D camera processes 3D scenes at a rate exceeding 30 frames per second. The proposed pipeline demonstrates an average RMSE of 0.8 $\pm$ 0.39 cm for simple and 0.11 $\pm$ 0.06 cm for complex geometries. Within each mode, it identifies and pinpoints reachable objects. Ensuring traffic safety is crucial, which necessitates the detection and prevention of road surface defects. As a result, there has been a growing interest in the literature on the subject, leading to the development of various road surface defect detection methods. The methods for detecting road defects can be categorised in various ways depending on the input data types or training methodologies. The predominant approach involves image-based methods, which analyse pixel intensities and surface textures to identify defects. Despite their popularity, image-based methods share the distinct limitation of vulnerability to weather and lighting changes. To address this issue, researchers have explored the use of additional sensors, such as laser scanners or LiDARs, providing explicit depth information to enable the detection of defects in terms of scale and volume. However, the exploration of data beyond images has not been sufficiently investigated. In this survey paper, we provide a comprehensive review of road surface defect detection studies, categorising them based on input data types and methodologies used. Road pavement detection and segmentation are critical for developing autonomous road repair systems. However, developing an instance segmentation method that simultaneously performs multi-class defect detection and segmentation is challenging due to the textural simplicity of road pavement image, the diversity of defect geometries, and the morphological ambiguity between classes. We propose a novel end-to-end method for multi-class road defect detection and segmentation. The proposed method comprises multiple spatial and channel-wise attention blocks available to learn global representations across spatial and channel-wise dimensions. Through these attention blocks, more globally generalised representations of morphological information (spatial characteristics) of road defects and colour and depth information of images can be learned. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework, we conducted various ablation studies and comparisons with prior methods on a newly collected dataset annotated with nine road defect classes. Tactile sensing is significant for robotics since it can obtain physical contact information during manipulation. To capture multimodal contact information within a compact framework, we designed a novel sensor called ViTacTip, which seamlessly integrates both tactile and visual perception capabilities into a single, integrated sensor unit. ViTacTip features a transparent skin to capture fine features of objects during contact, which can be known as the see-through-skin mechanism. In the meantime, the biomimetic tips embedded in ViTacTip can amplify touch motions during tactile perception. For comparative analysis, we also fabricated a ViTac sensor devoid of biomimetic tips, as well as a TacTip sensor with opaque skin. Furthermore, we develop a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based approach for modality switching between different perception modes, effectively alternating the emphasis between vision and tactile perception modes. We conducted a performance evaluation of the proposed sensor across three distinct tasks: i) grating identification, ii) pose regression, and iii) contact localization and force estimation. In the grating identification task, ViTacTip demonstrated an accuracy of 99.72%, surpassing TacTip, which achieved 94.60%. It also exhibited superior performance in both pose and force estimation tasks with the minimum error of 0.08mm and 0.03N, respectively, in contrast to ViTac's 0.12mm and 0.15N. End-to-end self-supervised models have been proposed for estimating the success of future candidate grasps and video predictive models for generating future observations. However, none have yet studied these two strategies side-by-side for addressing the aforementioned grasping problem. We investigate and compare a model-free approach, to estimate the success of a candidate grasp, against a model-based alternative that exploits a self-supervised learnt predictive model that generates a future observation of the gripper about to grasp an object. Our experiments demonstrate that despite the end-to-end model-free model obtaining a best accuracy of 72%, the proposed model-based pipeline yields a significantly higher accuracy of 82%.

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) building upon orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising wireless technology for supporting massive connectivity in future machine-type communication networks. However, the sensitivity of OFDM to carrier frequency offset (CFO) poses a major challenge because it leads to orthogonality loss and incurs intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper, we investigate the bit error rate (BER) performance of SCMA-OFDM systems in the presence of CFO over both Gaussian and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. We first model the ICI in SCMA-OFDM as Gaussian variables conditioned on a single channel realization for fading channels. The BER is then evaluated by averaging over all codeword pairs considering the fading statistics. Through simulations, we validate the accuracy of our BER analysis and reveal that there is a significant BER degradation for SCMA-OFDM systems when the normalized CFO exceeds 0.02.

The next generation of wireless communication technology is anticipated to address the communication reliability challenges encountered in high-speed mobile communication scenarios. An Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) system has been introduced as a solution that effectively mitigates these issues. However, OTFS is associated with relatively high pilot overhead and multiuser multiplexing overhead. In response to these concerns within the OTFS framework, a novel modulation technology known as Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing (AFDM) which is based on the discrete affine Fourier transform has emerged. AFDM effectively resolves the challenges by achieving full diversity through parameter adjustments aligned with the channel's delay-Doppler profile. Consequently, AFDM is capable of achieving performance levels comparable to OTFS. As the research on AFDM detection is currently limited, we present a low-complexity yet efficient message passing (MP) algorithm. This algorithm handles joint interference cancellation and detection while capitalizing on the inherent sparsity of the channel. The missing signal caused by the objects being occluded or an unstable sensor is a common challenge during data collection. Such missing signals will adversely affect the results obtained from the data, and this issue is observed more frequently in robotic tactile perception. In tactile perception, due to the limited working space and the dynamic environment, the contact between the tactile sensor and the object is frequently insufficient and unstable, which causes the partial loss of signals, thus leading to incomplete tactile data. The tactile data will therefore contain fewer tactile cues with low information density. In this paper, we propose a tactile representation learning method, named TacMAE, based on Masked Autoencoder to address the problem of incomplete tactile data in tactile perception. In our framework, a portion of the tactile image is masked out to simulate the missing contact region. By reconstructing the missing signals in the tactile image, the trained model can achieve a high-level understanding of surface geometry and tactile properties from limited tactile cues. The experimental results of tactile texture recognition show that our proposed TacMAE can achieve a high recognition accuracy of 71.4% in the zero-shot transfer and 85.8% after fine-tuning, which are 15.2% and 8.2% higher than the results without using masked modeling. Performing a large volume of experiments in Chemistry labs creates repetitive actions costing researchers time, automating these routines is highly desirable. Previous experiments in robotic chemistry have performed high numbers of experiments autonomously, however, these processes rely on automated machines in all stages from solid or liquid addition to analysis of the final product. In these systems every transition between machine requires the robotic chemist to pick and place glass vials, however, this is currently performed using open loop methods which require all equipment being used by the robot to be in well defined known locations. We seek to begin closing the loop in this vial handling process in a way which also fosters human-robot collaboration in the chemistry lab environment. To do this the robot must be able to detect valid placement positions for the vials it is collecting, and reliably insert them into the detected locations. We create a single modality visual method for estimating placement locations to provide a baseline before introducing two additional methods of feedback (force and tactile feedback). Our visual method uses a combination of classic computer vision methods and a CNN discriminator to detect possible insertion points, then a vial is grasped and positioned above an insertion point and the multi-modal methods guide the final insertion movements using an efficient search pattern. Tactile sensing plays an irreplaceable role in robotic material recognition. It enables robots to distinguish material properties such as their local geometry and textures, especially for materials like textiles. However, most tactile recognition methods can only classify known materials that have been touched and trained with tactile data, yet cannot classify unknown materials that are not trained with tactile data. To solve this problem, we propose a tactile zero-shot learning framework to recognise unknown materials when they are touched for the first time without requiring training tactile samples. The visual modality, providing tactile cues from sight, and semantic attributes, giving high-level characteristics, are combined together to bridge the gap between touched classes and untouched classes. A generative model is learnt to synthesise tactile features according to corresponding visual images and semantic embeddings, and then a classifier can be trained using the synthesised tactile features of untouched materials for zero-shot recognition. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed multimodal generative model can achieve a high recognition accuracy of 83.06% in classifying materials that were not touched before. Recently, several morphologies, each with its advantages, have been proposed for the \textit{GelSight} high-resolution tactile sensors. However, existing simulation methods are limited to flat-surface sensors, which prevents their usage with the newer sensors of non-flat morphologies in Sim2Real experiments. In this paper, we extend a previously proposed GelSight simulation method developed for flat-surface sensors and propose a novel method for curved sensors. In particular, we address the simulation of light rays travelling through a curved tactile membrane in the form of geodesic paths. The method is validated by simulating the finger-shaped GelTip sensor and comparing the generated synthetic tactile images against the corresponding real images. Our extensive experiments show that combining the illumination generated from the geodesic paths, with a background image from the real sensor, produces the best results when compared to the lighting generated by direct linear paths in the same conditions. As the method is parameterised by the sensor mesh, it can be applied in principle to simulate a tactile sensor of any morphology. The proposed method not only unlocks simulating existing optical tactile sensors of complex morphologies but also enables experimenting with sensors of novel morphologies, before the fabrication of the real sensor. Transparent object perception is a rapidly developing research problem in artificial intelligence. The ability to perceive transparent objects enables robots to achieve higher levels of autonomy, unlocking new applications in various industries such as healthcare, services and manufacturing. Despite numerous datasets and perception methods being proposed in recent years, there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of these methods and the challenges in this field. To address this gap, this article provides a comprehensive survey of the platforms and recent advances for robotic perception of transparent objects. We highlight the main challenges and propose future directions of various transparent object perception tasks, i.e., segmentation, reconstruction, and pose estimation. We also discuss the limitations of existing datasets in diversity and complexity, and the benefits of employing multi-modal sensors, such as RGB-D cameras, thermal cameras, and polarised imaging, for transparent object perception. Furthermore, we identify perception challenges in complex and dynamic environments, as well as for objects with changeable geometries. Simulation is widely applied in robotics research to save time and resources. There have been several works to simulate optical tactile sensors that leverage either a smoothing method or Finite Element Method (FEM). However, elastomer deformation physics is not considered in the former method, whereas the latter requires a massive amount of computational resources like a computer cluster. In this work, we propose a pluggable and low computational cost simulator using the Taichi programming language for simulating optical tactile sensors, named as Tacchi . It reconstructs elastomer deformation using particles, which allows deformed elastomer surfaces to be rendered into tactile images and reveals contact information without suffering from high computational costs. Tacchi facilitates creating realistic tactile images in simulation, e.g., ones that capture wear-and-tear defects on object surfaces. In addition, the proposed Tacchi can be integrated with robotics simulators for a robot system simulation. Experiment results showed that Tacchi can produce images with better similarity to real images and achieved higher Sim2Real accuracy compared to the existing methods. Moreover, it can be connected with MuJoCo and Gazebo with only the requirement of 1G memory space in GPU compared to a computer cluster applied for FEM. To assist robots in teleoperation tasks, haptic rendering which allows human operators access a virtual touch feeling has been developed in recent years. Most previous haptic rendering methods strongly rely on data collected by tactile sensors. However, tactile data is not widely available for robots due to their limited reachable space and the restrictions of tactile sensors. To eliminate the need for tactile data, in this paper we propose a novel method named as Vis2Hap to generate haptic rendering from visual inputs that can be obtained from a distance without physical interaction. We take the surface texture of objects as key cues to be conveyed to the human operator. To this end, a generative model is designed to simulate the roughness and slipperiness of the object's surface. To embed haptic cues in Vis2Hap, we use height maps from tactile sensors and spectrograms from friction coefficients as the intermediate outputs of the generative model. Once Vis2Hap is trained, it can be used to generate height maps and spectrograms of new surface textures, from which a friction image can be obtained and displayed on a haptic display. The user study demonstrates that our proposed Vis2Hap method enables users to access a realistic haptic feeling similar to that of physical objects. Dijkstra's algorithm is one of the most popular classic path planning algorithms, achieving optimal solutions across a wide range of challenging tasks. However, it only calculates the shortest distance from one vertex to another, which is hard to directly apply to the Dynamic Multi-Sources to Single-Destination (DMS-SD) problem. This paper proposes a modified Dijkstra algorithm to address the DMS-SD problem, where the destination can be dynamically changed. Our method deploys the concept of Adjacent Matrix from Floyd's algorithm and achieves the goal with mathematical calculations. We formally show that all-pairs shortest distance information in Floyd's algorithm is not required in our algorithm. The long-tailed distribution is a common phenomenon in the real world. Extracted large scale image datasets inevitably demonstrate the long-tailed property and models trained with imbalanced data can obtain high performance for the over-represented categories, but struggle for the under-represented categories, leading to biased predictions and performance degradation. To address this challenge, we propose a novel de-biasing method named Inverse Image Frequency (IIF). IIF is a multiplicative margin adjustment transformation of the logits in the classification layer of a convolutional neural network. Our method achieves stronger performance than similar works and it is especially useful for downstream tasks such as long-tailed instance segmentation as it produces fewer false positive detections. Our extensive experiments show that IIF surpasses the state of the art on many long-tailed benchmarks such as ImageNet-LT, CIFAR-LT, Places-LT and LVIS, reaching 55.8% top-1 accuracy with ResNet50 on ImageNet-LT and 26.2% segmentation AP with MaskRCNN on LVIS. Picking up transparent objects is still a challenging task for robots. The visual properties of transparent objects such as reflection and refraction make the current grasping methods that rely on camera sensing fail to detect and localise them. However, humans can handle the transparent object well by first observing its coarse profile and then poking an area of interest to get a fine profile for grasping. Inspired by this, we propose a novel framework of vision-guided tactile poking for transparent objects grasping. In the proposed framework, a segmentation network is first used to predict the horizontal upper regions named as poking regions, where the robot can poke the object to obtain a good tactile reading while leading to minimal disturbance to the object's state. A poke is then performed with a high-resolution GelSight tactile sensor. Given the local profiles improved with the tactile reading, a heuristic grasp is planned for grasping the transparent object. To mitigate the limitations of real-world data collection and labelling for transparent objects, a large-scale realistic synthetic dataset was constructed. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed segmentation network can predict the potential poking region with a high mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.360, and the vision-guided tactile poking can enhance the grasping success rate significantly from 38.9% to 85.2%. Thanks to its simplicity, our proposed approach could also be adopted by other force or tactile sensors and could be used for grasping of other challenging objects. Major advancements have been made in the field of object detection and segmentation recently. However, when it comes to rare categories, the state-of-the-art methods fail to detect them, resulting in a significant performance gap between rare and frequent categories. In this paper, we identify that Sigmoid or Softmax functions used in deep detectors are a major reason for low performance and are sub-optimal for long-tailed detection and segmentation. To address this, we develop a Gumbel Optimized Loss (GOL), for long-tailed detection and segmentation. It aligns with the Gumbel distribution of rare classes in imbalanced datasets, considering the fact that most classes in long-tailed detection have low expected probability. The proposed GOL significantly outperforms the best state-of-the-art method by 1.1% on AP , and boosts the overall segmentation by 9.0% and detection by 8.0%, particularly improving detection of rare classes by 20.3%, compared to Mask-RCNN, on LVIS dataset. As a prevalent distributed learning paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) trains a global model on a massive amount of devices with infrequent communication. This paper investigates a class of composite optimization and statistical recovery problems in the FL setting, whose loss function consists of a data-dependent smooth loss and a non-smooth regularizer. Examples include sparse linear regression using Lasso, low-rank matrix recovery using nuclear norm regularization, etc. In the existing literature, federated composite optimization algorithms are designed only from an optimization perspective without any statistical guarantees. In addition, they do not consider commonly used (restricted) strong convexity in statistical recovery problems. We advance the frontiers of this problem from both optimization and statistical perspectives. From optimization upfront, we propose a new algorithm named \textit{Fast Federated Dual Averaging} for strongly convex and smooth loss and establish state-of-the-art iteration and communication complexity in the composite setting. In particular, we prove that it enjoys a fast rate, linear speedup, and reduced communication rounds. From statistical upfront, for restricted strongly convex and smooth loss, we design another algorithm, namely \textit{Multi-stage Federated Dual Averaging}, and prove a high probability complexity bound with linear speedup up to optimal statistical precision. Experiments in both synthetic and real data demonstrate that our methods perform better than other baselines.
