37. Gambling in the Public Marketplace: Adaptations to Economic Context

Abstract

Demand for public games of chance was examined over a 24-year period, across various contexts of the prevailing gaming environment that included significant political and economic events. Lottery sales trends revealed devaluation of large jackpots beyond that due to inflation as they became more common, with the steepest discounting in the largest prizes. At the highest levels, jackpots continued to induce demand in games after they were claimed. The 2009 recession correlated with decreased demand for some gambling options but not for others; together with departures from matching between game odds and sales, this suggests that different games served different functions for their players. There was no evidence that public gambling baselines in Oregon were disrupted by the 2001 terrorist attacks. Despite several limitations, these data implicate behavioral influences, including habituation, induction, motivating operations, and matching within public gambling, consistent with the Behavioral Perspective Model of consumer choice.

Abstract

During human development, there is a switch in the erythroid compartment at birth that results in silencing of expression of fetal hemoglobin (HbF). Reversal of this silencing has been shown to be effective in overcoming the pathophysiologic defect in sickle cell anemia. Among the many transcription factors and epigenetic effectors that are known to mediate HbF silencing, two of the most potent are BCL11A and MBD2-NuRD. In this report, we present direct evidence that MBD2--NuRD occupies the γ-globin gene promoter in adult erythroid cells and positions a nucleosome there that results in a closed chromatin conformation that prevents binding of the transcriptional activator, NF-Y. We show that the specific isoform, MBD2a, is required for the formation and stable occupancy of this repressor complex that includes BCL11A, MBD2a--NuRD, and the arginine methyltransferase, PRMT5. The methyl cytosine binding preference and the arginine-rich (GR) domain of MBD2a are required for high affinity binding to methylated y-globin gene proximal promoter DNA sequences. Mutation of the methyl cytosine--binding domain (MBD) of MBD2 results in a variable but consistent loss of γ-globin gene silencing, in support of the importance of promoter methylation. The GR domain of MBD2a is also required for recruitment of PRMT5, which in turn results in placement of the repressive chromatin mark H3K8me2s at the promoter. These findings support a unified model that integrates the respective roles of BCL11A, MBD2a-NuRD, PRMT5, and DNA methylation in HbF silencing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. Toward Equity for Blacks in Higher Education.

Abstract

The present condition of the United States regarding the education of black college-age youth and the status of historically black colleges is discussed in this paper. Background information on the role of black colleges and an elaboration of present-day problems facing black colleges are presented. The declining enrollment, drop-out rate, counter attacks on and a weakening of affirmative action in student and faculty recruitment, diminishing funds, and distortions surrounding the ability of blacks to pay for higher education are but a few of the problems which seriously affect educational progress. An all-out effort must be made to correct educational inequities if the future is to hold promise for blacks and other minorities. Statistics pertaining to the key issues discussed in this paper are included. (Author/BS)

43. Developing Intergenerational Programs Jointly with the Aging and Child Care Networks in Pennsylvania. Final Report and Executive Summary.

Abstract

A project was implemented to help program staff from the aging and child care networks to plan and implement intergenerational programs. Specific objectives were to: (1) train approximately 15 staff members from the aging network and 15 staff members from the child care network in each of five different geographic regions of Pennsylvania to plan and implement collaborative intergenerational programs; (2) develop approximately 50 intergenerational programs involving older adults and young children throughout Pennsylvania; (3) demonstrate the effectiveness of cooperation among the staff from the networks; (4) contribute to older adults' feelings of well-being through their involvement as support persons to young children; and (5) contribute to young children's growth and learning through the development of caring relationships between them and older adults. Evaluation data were collected through a pre- and post-test administered to the network staff before and after the 2-day training workshops, a written survey completed toward the end of the project by the trained staff and reporting on their progress in implementing an intergenerational program, and questionnaires completed by the older adult participants and child care teachers of participating children. Outcomes indicate that the project was very successful in achieving each of its objectives. Factors contributing to the success of the program are identified, and recommendations for implementation are offered. Related materials are appended, including profiles of the new intergenerational programs. (RH)
