Abstract

In June 2019 from the region of Calabria (Italy) our group launched the Stratospheric Balloon MoCRiS (Measurement of Cosmic Ray in Stratosphere) that reached up to 35111 meters. MoCRiS is a didactical project that uses a Light Balloon with a payload of only 2.1 Kg payload box included. The capsule was Lithium-ion batteries operated and fully instrumented with two Hi-Res Camera, one for picture and one for video, GPS Tracker, two Particle detectors, and sensors for temperature and pressure. Two ArduSiPM [6] scintillation detectors, made by the INFN group in Rome, were used as cosmic ray flux meters. The technology used for these types of devices makes them very economical, light (<150 g), and with low power consumption (<1 Watt). These characteristics are optimal for use with the balloon and in space (e.g. in CubeSat), and very attractive for educational use, even on the ground. During the school year, the students of the scientific high school "Stefano Patrizi" of Cariati (CS) Italy, participated in the definition of the project following theoretical and practical lessons on aerospace techniques and particle physics with regard to cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere. The mission was completely successful by experimentally verifying the pressure-to-height relation, the height of the thermal inversion in the atmosphere, reaching and exceeding the maximum Regener-Pfotzer level of the shower development. The instrumental and didactic platform created is easily replicable even with further upgrades. We are expanding the collaboration with other schools for further launches.

Abstract

OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities was born in 2018 as a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a national framework, the numerous public engagement activities in the field of cosmic ray physics already present at a local level in the divisions and laboratories. Since spring 2020 OCRA offers also a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be offered in the classroom by teachers. The cosmic ray path, present on the website, will be presented together with the online laboratories on the measurement of muons, from the one related to the dependence on the zenith angle made during the International Cosmic Day up to measurements of the flux dependency on the altitude in the atmosphere and in the water. Also, a laboratory allowing to analyze public data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented. In addition, some teaching methods included in the "Teachers' area" of the OCRA website will be described. The developed cosmic ray path was also used to organize an online course for teachers of Italian high schools with the purpose of accompanying teachers when approaching the subject for the first time. Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project offers a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Created in 2018, OCRA now counts 21 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project's core activity is the participation of all its members in the International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, and inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. The national activities are complemented by local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and tutorship programs, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

The outreach program “A scuola di Astroparticelle” was proposed in 2016 by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN - Napoli Division) in collaboration with the Physics Department “Ettore Pancini” of the Federico II University in Napoli, CNR-SPIN and CNR-ISASI Institutes. Its main goal is to engage teachers and students of High Schools in astroparticle physics projects. For the third edition (2018/19), the activities, which are also part of the Italian Educational Program PCTO - “Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e per l'Orientamento”, involved 18 schools for a total of 21 projects on several topics. Some projects were strictly related to astroparticles as cosmic rays, while others were more technical, as the development of particle detectors, or cross-disciplinary projects. Students worked for the entire school year and prepared materials for the final event. More than 600 students attended the event and presented their work to a jury with a poster and an oral presentation in plenary sessions. Since 2018, the program is part of OCRA - Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities - a national outreach project of INFN with the aim of collecting, within a common framework, the numerous outreach activities in cosmic-ray field carried out at the local level. The fourth edition (2019-20), in spite of the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has also seen the participation of 22 schools that carried out part of the activities in an online format. The project realized using the open data of the Pierre Auger Observatory will be presented in detail.

Abstract

The Outreach Cosmic Ray Activities (OCRA) project offers a platform for all outreach activities focusing on cosmic rays within the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN). Created in 2018, OCRA now counts 21 of the institute's divisions all over Italy as members. The project's core activity is the participation of all its members in the International Cosmic Day, organized by DESY, and inviting high school students to carry out hands-on measurements of the cosmic ray flux and learn about the related physics background. Two students from each division are then selected to participate in the annual OCRA science camp, a three-day full immersion into the life of a physicist. The national activities are complemented by local initiatives of the OCRA member groups: workshops and tutorship programs, science competitions and the development of new detectors for outreach activities offer a multitude of possibilities for students to engage with our researchers and to explore the world of cosmic rays. Since spring of 2020 OCRA also offers a series of online laboratories on its website https://web.infn.it/OCRA/, designed not only to be used by students individually but also to be used in the classroom by teachers. Here we will give an overview on all activities offered by OCRA with a particular focus on the 2020 online event organized in occasion of the International Cosmic Day, that saw the participation of more than 3000 students.

Abstract

A study about the risk perception from exposure to environmental radiation, in particular to radon gas, through an online survey has been carried out. The rationale has been the definition of the concepts of risk and danger and the analysis of the European and Italian legislative context regarding information on exposure to ionizing radiation. Two test populations were involved: general and student population. The results showed that the perceived risk is different from the real risk and that the knowledge of the issue is related to the level of education and the cultural background. Furthermore, the influence of dissemination activities and educational projects with high schools on the level of knowledge of gas radon is evident.

Abstract

Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) are practical, accurate, and precise tools for point dosimetry in medical physics applications. TLDs are nowadays extensively used to measure dose in conformal radiation therapy in order to guarantee the safety of the treatment. Several national and international organizations recommend checking the effective dose delivered to an individual patient by means of in vivo dosimetry. Modern radiotherapy techniques employing both photon and ion beams exhibit excellent target conformation throught high steep-dose gradients between tumour and adjacent organs and tissues. In this context, catching potential dose errors and uncertainties in treatment delivering is the first step to ensure the optimization of the treatment plan. This study shows the results of the characterization of TLDs-100 at two Italian facilities devoted to advanced radiation treatments with photon and proton therapy. The individual sensitivity factor was determined, and the calibration curves were carried out in the dose range 0–20 Gy. By the analysis of the dose response curves, the linear region was identified under the dose level of 10 Gy. Characterization of the TLDs-100 has enabled their use for in vivo dosimetry especially in the dose range corresponding to the linear region of the dose response curves.

Abstract

Brachytherapy represents the treatment of choice for many cancerous lesions, including skin tumours. Purpose of the study was to investigate the performance of thermoluminescent dosimeters of type 100, (TLD-100), for dose verification in high dose-rate treatment with a radioactive source of iridium-192. A set of TLDs-100 was calibrated with a 250 kVp X-ray beam in the dose range 0–5 Gy. Through a head and neck phantom, TLDs were fixed on districts corresponding to volumes of interest, including the target volume and some critical structures, then a single fraction of brachytherapy treatment was delivered. The dose measurements provided by TLDs were compared with the planned ones and the results were discussed in the light of limitations affecting the current treatment planning systems and critical aspects relating to brachytherapy implementation that still occurred in clinical settings. The findings of the study allow us to conclude that TLDs-100 show a good performance in the radiation field investigated and the use of so small, cheap and practical dosimetry system is potentially an optimal strategy of improving and standardizing the quality assurance protocol in brachytherapy.

Abstract

Breast cancer is reported as the second most common cancer in the world. The estimate for 2018 is 59 700 new cases of breast cancer (Bray F. et al., Cancer. J. Clin., 68 (2018) 394). The distribution of the incidence of breast cancer is high especially in industrialized countries, followed by developing countries. The development of effective screening programs allows to lead the survival to 84% in developed countries. Early diagnosis, in the context of these programs, is carried out using X-rays and the equipment used for this purpose is constantly updated to improve the detection capability for the same dose delivered. Nowadays, next to full-field digital mammography (FFDM), 3D technology is available on modern mammography devices, such as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT). Some studies show that the use of DBT, combined with FFDM, or as a stand-alone technology, allows for a better diagnostic performance than FFDM alone (Skaane P. et al., Radiology, 267 (2013) 47; Ciatto S. et al., Lancet Oncol., 14 (2013) 583). In addition to the diagnostic capacity, of course, the dose to the population participating in the screening programs must also be investigated. Considering that the different manufacturers of digital mammography systems use different technologies to reconstruct pseudo-3D images, it is essential to check the radiation dose of various equipment available in healthcare facilities. The purpose of this work is to verify the radiation dose for a specific mammography unit used in both FFDM and DBT procedures.

17. Electret ion chamber and environmental gamma radiation background: Preliminary results on the optimization of a radon gas measurement system

Abstract

A study to evaluate the feasibility of using a system routinely used for measurements of radon gas concentration for measuring the background of gamma radiation was carried out. This approach would reduce the employment of different detectors to a single type, standardizing the methodology adopted and reducing the costs affecting other types of detectors. A 1440 hours long measurement was performed, using an experimental EIC system. The results were compared with measurements provided by a proportional counter and thermoluminescence dosimeters used as a reference. The results suggest the potential of the EIC system for unconventional use for gamma radiation background measurements.

Abstract

In this study the radon-222 activity concentration in drinking water over a large area of the western Campania region was investigated. Water samples were collected over a period of three years between May 2017 and May 2019 in compliance with Italian legislation. The measurement of radon activity concentration using electret detector (E-Perm® system) in short-short term configuration was performed. The purpose has been to identify the sampling points and report them on a map, studying the presence of any correlations between variations in the concentration of activity, seasonality and specific characteristics of the plant. The results obtained revealed that the concentrations of radon activity in the drinking water of the investigated sites are below the parameter value established by the law. Furthermore, activity concentration of radon in well water does not depend on seasonality, unlike the tanks, for which there is a relationship with the temperature that must be studied separately on the basis of the single tank.

20. The equilibrium factor in the radon dose calculation in the archaeological site of Acquedotto Augusteo del Serino in Naples

Abstract

Summary. — The calculation of the dose from exposure to radon gas is regulated by the Italian Legislative Decree 241/2000. It takes into account the activity concentration of the radon gas, the exposure time and the conversion factor (equal to 3 nSv/Bq·m3·h) which includes the value of the equilibrium factor (F), set to be 0.4. Since high concentrations of radon are found in particular in some underground environments, it is important to evaluate the real exposure dose of workers, by estimating the value of F on a case-by-case basis exposure dose of workers. Measurements have been made with the E-RPISU system, which allows the simultaneous assessment of the concentration of radon gas activity in air and of its progeny. In this preliminary investigation, measurements were carried out in locals of the ancient site of the Acquedotto Augusteo del Serino in the Sanità district in the historic center of Naples, and the results confirmed the importance of calculating the value of the equilibrium factor in order to obtain a correct and realistic estimate of the exposure dose.

21. Correlation of the activity concentration of gas radon in environments located on ground floor and underground level

Abstract

Summary. — In Italy, workers’ exposure to radon gas is regulated by the Legislative Decree n. 241/00 and concerns only underground workplaces such as caves, tunnels, catacombs and mines, establishing 500 Bq/m3 as the limit value of activity concentration of radon. The Directive Euratom 59/2013 has introduced 300 Bq/m3 as a reference level and the indication to carry out measurements in all public buildings located at the basement and ground level. The transposition by the member states scheduled for February 2018 has not yet taken place so in anticipation of the imminent transposition of the Directive by Italy, the goal of this preliminary work is to demonstrate the importance of monitoring the ground floor environments since they could have significant radon concentrations, though it is not subject to a legislative requirement. Usually the measures have a duration of 12 months, but for this preliminary approach, electrets detectors were used, in SLT configuration (Short chamber and Long Term electrets), for 30 days, in workplaces located on the ground floor and in the basement. Results show high values that can cause workers to exceed the radon maximum dose levels.

Abstract

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable disease, with little information available on its management in real-world clinical practice. The results of the present prospective, noninterventional observational study revealed great diversity in the treatment regimens used to treat MM. Our results also provide data to inform health economic, pharmacoepidemiologic, and outcomes research, providing a framework for the design of protocols to improve the outcomes of patients with MM. Background: The present prospective, multinational, noninterventional study aimed to document and describe real-world treatment regimens and disease progression in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Patients and Methods: Adult patients initiating any new MM therapy from October 2010 to October 2012 were eligible. A multistage patient/site recruitment model was applied to minimize the selection bias; enrollment was stratified by country, region, and practice type. The patient medical and disease features, treatment history, and remission status were recorded at baseline, and prospective data on treatment, efficacy, and safety were collected electronically every 3 months. Results: A total of 2358 patients were enrolled. Of these patients, 775 and 1583 did and did not undergo stem cell transplantation (SCT) at any time during treatment, respectively. Of the patients in the SCT and non-SCT groups, 49%, 21%, 14%, and 15% and 57%, 20%, 12% and 10% were enrolled at treatment line 1, 2, 3, and ≥ 4, respectively. In the SCT and non-SCT groups, 45% and 54% of the patients had received bortezomib-based therapy without thalidomide/lenalidomide, 12% and 18% had received thalidomide/lenalidomide-based therapy without bortezomib, and 30% and 4% had received bortezomib plus thalidomide/lenalidomide-based therapy as frontline treatment, respectively. The corresponding proportions of SCT and non-SCT patients in lines 2, 3, and ≥ 4 were 45% and 37%, 30% and 37%, and 12% and 3%, 33% and 27%, 35% and 32%, and 8% and 2%, and 27% and 27%, 27% and 23%, and 6% and 4%, respectively. In the SCT and non-SCT patients, the overall response rate was 86% to 97% and 64% to 85% in line 1, 74% to 78% and 59% to 68% in line 2, 55% to 83% and 48% to 60% in line 3, and 49% to 65% and 36% and 45% in line 4, respectively, for regimens that included bortezomib and/or thalidomide/lenalidomide. Conclusion: The results of our prospective study have revealed great diversity in the treatment regimens used to manage MM in real-life practice. This diversity was linked to factors such as novel agent accessibility and evolving treatment recommendations. Our results provide insight into associated clinical benefits. © 2018 The Authors

Abstract

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable disease, with little information available on its management in real-world clinical practice. The results of the present prospective, noninterventional observational study revealed great diversity in the treatment regimens used to treat MM. Our results also provide data to inform health economic, pharmacoepidemiologic, and outcomes research, providing a framework for the design of protocols to improve the outcomes of patients with MM. Background: The present prospective, multinational, noninterventional study aimed to document and describe real-world treatment regimens and disease progression in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Patients and Methods: Adult patients initiating any new MM therapy from October 2010 to October 2012 were eligible. A multistage patient/site recruitment model was applied to minimize the selection bias; enrollment was stratified by country, region, and practice type. The patient medical and disease features, treatment history, and remission status were recorded at baseline, and prospective data on treatment, efficacy, and safety were collected electronically every 3 months. Results: A total of 2358 patients were enrolled. Of these patients, 775 and 1583 did and did not undergo stem cell transplantation (SCT) at any time during treatment, respectively. Of the patients in the SCT and non-SCT groups, 49%, 21%, 14%, and 15% and 57%, 20%, 12% and 10% were enrolled at treatment line 1, 2, 3, and ≥ 4, respectively. In the SCT and non-SCT groups, 45% and 54% of the patients had received bortezomib-based therapy without thalidomide/lenalidomide, 12% and 18% had received thalidomide/lenalidomide-based therapy without bortezomib, and 30% and 4% had received bortezomib plus thalidomide/lenalidomide-based therapy as frontline treatment, respectively. Abstract

In a randomized, phase 3 study, superior complete/near-complete response (CR/nCR) rates and extended progression-free survival were demonstrated with bortezomib-thalidomide-dexamethasone (VTD) versus thalidomide-dexamethasone (TD) as induction therapy before, and consolidation after, double autologous stem cell transplantation for newly diagnosed myeloma patients (intention-to-treat analysis; VTD, n = 236; TD, n = 238). This per-protocol analysis (VTD, n = 160; TD, n = 161) specifically assessed the efficacy and safety of consolidation with VTD or TD. Before starting consolidation, CR/nCR rates were not significantly different in the VTD (63.1%) and TD arms (54.7%). After consolidation, CR (60.6% vs 46.6%) and CR/nCR (73.1% vs 60.9%) rates were significantly higher for VTD-treated versus TD-treated patients. VTD consolidation significantly increased CR and CR/nCR rates, but TD did not (McNemar test). With a median follow-up of 30.4 months from start of consolidation, 3-year progression-free survival was significantly longer for the VTD group (60% vs 48% for TD). Grade 2 or 3 peripheral neuropathy (8.1% vs 2.4%) was more frequent with VTD (grade 3, 0.6%) versus TD consolidation. The superior efficacy of VTD versus TD as induction was retained despite readministration as consolidation therapy after double autologous transplantation. VTD consolidation therapy significantly contributed to improved clinical outcomes observed for patients randomly assigned to the VTD arm of the study. Abstract

In a randomized, phase 3 study, superior complete/near-complete response (CR/nCR) rates and extended progression-free survival were demonstrated with bortezomib-thalidomide-dexamethasone (VTD) versus thalidomide-dexamethasone (TD) as induction therapy before, and consolidation after, double autologous stem cell transplantation for newly diagnosed myeloma patients (intention-to-treat analysis; VTD, n = 236; TD, n = 238). This per-protocol analysis (VTD, n = 160; TD, n = 161) specifically assessed the efficacy and safety of consolidation with VTD or TD. Before starting consolidation, CR/nCR rates were not significantly different in the VTD (63.1%) and TD arms (54.7%). After consolidation, CR (60.6% vs 46.6%) and CR/nCR (73.1% vs 60.9%) rates were significantly higher for VTD-treated versus TD-treated patients. VTD consolidation significantly increased CR and CR/nCR rates, but TD did not (McNemar test). With a median follow-up of 30.4 months from start of consolidation, 3-year progression-free survival was significantly longer for the VTD group (60% vs 48% for TD). Grade 2 or 3 peripheral neuropathy (8.1% vs 2.4%) was more frequent with VTD (grade 3, 0.6%) versus TD consolidation. The superior efficacy of VTD versus TD as induction was retained despite readministration as consolidation therapy after double autologous transplantation. VTD consolidation therapy significantly contributed to improved clinical outcomes observed for patients randomly assigned to the VTD arm of the study.
