We describe EPIC 205718330 and EPIC 235240266, two systems identified in the K2 data whose light curves contain episodic drops in brightness with shapes and durations similar to those of the young 'dipper' stars, yet shallower by ∼1–2 orders of magnitude. These 'little dippers' have diverse profile shapes with durations of ≃0.5–1.0 d and depths of ≃0.1–1.0 per cent in flux; however, unlike most of the young dipper stars, these do not exhibit any detectable infrared excess indicative of protoplanetary discs, and our ground-based follow-up spectra lack any signatures of youth while indicating that these objects are kinematically old. After ruling out instrumental and/or data processing artefacts as sources of the dimming events, we investigate possible astrophysical mechanisms based on the light curve and stellar properties. We argue that the little dippers are consistent with transits of star-grazing exocomets, and speculate that they are signposts of massive non-transiting exoplanets driving the close-approach orbits. Over the duration of the Kepler mission, KIC 8462852 was observed to undergo irregularly shaped, aperiodic dips in flux of up to~20 per cent. The dipping activity can last for between 5 and 80 d. We characterize the object with high-resolution spectroscopy, spectral energy distribution fitting, radial velocity measurements, high-resolution imaging, and Fourier analyses of the Kepler light curve. We determine that KIC 8462852 is a typical main-sequence F3 V star that exhibits no significant IR excess, and has no very close interacting companions. In this paper, we describe various scenarios to explain the dipping events observed in the Kepler light curve. We confirm that the dipping signals in the data are not caused by any instrumental or data processing artefact, and thus are astrophysical in origin. We construct scenario-independent constraints on the size and location of a body in the system that are needed to reproduce the observations. We deliberate over several assorted stellar and circumstellar astrophysical scenarios, most of which have problems explaining the data in hand. By considering the observational constraints on dust clumps in orbit around a normal main-sequence star, we conclude that the scenario most consistent with the data in hand is the passage of a family of exocomet or planetesimal fragments, all of which are associated with a single previous break-up event, possibly caused by tidal disruption or thermal processing. The minimum total mass associated with these fragments likely exceeds 10-6 M⊕, corresponding to an original rocky body of >100 km in diameter. We attempted to determine whether timing theories developed primarily to explain performance in fixed-interval reinforcement schedules are also applicable to variable intervals. Groups of rats were trained in lever boxes on peak procedures with a 30-, 45-, or 60-s interval, or a 30- to 60-s uniform distribution (Experiment 1); a 60-s fixed and 1- to 121-s uniform distribution between and within animals (Experiment 2); and a procedure in which the interval between food and next available food gradually changed from a fixed 60 s to a uniform distribution between 0 and 120 s (Experiment 3). In uniform interval schedules rats made lever responses at particular times since food, as measured by the distribution of food-food intervals, the distribution of postreinforcement pauses, and the mean response rate as a function of time since food. Qualitative features of this performance are described by a multiple-oscillator connectionist theory of timing.

Rats were trained and matched on a delayed-nonmatching-to-sample (DNMTS) task and randomly assigned to treatment. In Experiment 1, radio-frequency (RF) lesions were aimed at lateral portions of the internal medullary lamina (L-IML), midline thalamus (MT), mammillary bodies (MB), and the combination of MT and MB. In Experiment 2, RF lesions were aimed at the fornix. After recovery, DNMTS was retrained at retention intervals retention interval of 3.0-18.0 s, the critical retention interval for 75% DNMTS accuracy was determined by a staircase procedure, and spontaneous exploration was observed in an open field. L-IML lesions produced significant deficits on DNMTS and exploratory behavior that were comparable to deficits on the same tasks in rats recovered from pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency. Fornix lesions produced significant DNMTS deficits that were substantially smaller than for the L-IML group. The MT, MB, and MT+MB treatments had no significant effect on DNMTS.
