Abstract: International audience; This article presents an original work on velocity and stress autocorrelation functions, memory functions, spectral densities and atomic transport properties of two liquid alkali metals (sodium and potassium). For this, we carried out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using Green-Kubo relation under the condition of very long-time duration to obtain reliable and accurate results.An originality of the present work is that the interatomic forces are described by pair potentials built within the “first principles” pseudopotential formalism using the non-local and energy dependent model potential of Shaw. It is completely free of adjustable parameters since the energy dependent parameters are determined self-consistently at the Fermi energy on an absolute energy scale. The Green-Kubo relationship is the main theoretical tool that allows us determining the atomic transport coefficients from appropriate time-autocorrelation functions. An important new result concerns the memory function. We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, that it can be depicted as a sum of wavelets. The wavelets with their amazing features emphasize the nature of dynamic processes at the microscopic level. We also compared, for the first time to our knowledge, the spectral density associated to the velocity autocorrelation function (VACF), to experimental values obtained by incoherent inelastic neutron scattering. Finally, the temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient (our previous study) and that of shear viscosity (present work) are both in excellent agreement with experiment.

Abstract: International audience; A molecular dynamics study is performed of liquid Na0.139K0.435Cs0.426 alloy known to have the lowest reported freezing point (195.2 K). Using Fiolhais's pair potential, we study the temperature dependence of the atomic structure of this alloy from 100 to 1000 K. Na atoms appear to play an important role in the lowering of its melting temperature. The self-diffusion coefficients as well as the viscosity are also computed. Their temperature dependence does not show any unusual behaviour. However, as temperature is nearing the melting point, diffusion and viscosity reach uncommon values for this kind of materials.

Abstract: International audience; Background - In late 2013, France was one of the first countries to recommend initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) irrespective of CD4 cell count. Methods - To assess the impact of achieving the second and third Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS 90-90-90 targets (ie, 90% of diagnosed people on sustained cART, and, of those, 90% virologically controlled) on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence, we conducted a longitudinal study to describe the epidemiology of primary HIV infection (PHI) and/or recent HIV infection (patients with CD4 cell count ≥500/mm3 at HIV diagnosis; (PRHI) between 2007 and 2017 in a large French multicenter cohort. To identify changes in trends in PHI and PRHI, we used single breakpoint linear segmented regression analysis. Results - During the study period, 61 822 patients were followed in the Dat'AIDS cohort; 2027 (10.0%) had PHI and 7314 (36.1%) had PRHI. The second and third targets were reached in 2014 and 2013, respectively. The median delay between HIV diagnosis and cART initiation decreased from 9.07 (interquartile range [IQR], 1.39-33.47) months in 2007 to 0.77 (IQR, 0.37-1.60) months in 2017. A decrease in PHI (-35.1%) and PRHI (-25.4%) was observed starting in 2013. The breakpoints for PHI and PRHI were 2012.6 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2010.8-2014.4) and 2013.1 (95% CI, 2011.3-2014.8), respectively. Conclusions - Our findings show that the achievements of 2 public health targets in France and the early initiation of cART were accompanied by a reduction of about one-third in PHI and PRHI between 2013 and 2017. Abstract: International audience; Nanoscale-engineered optical systems have been thoroughly investigated for a few decades due to their fascinating abilities to confine and enhance electromagnetic fields in very sub-wavelength and have a large number of applications in domains like biosensing, enhanced-Raman spectroscopy, metamaterials, photothermal therapy, and plasmomechanics. In addition, the recent astonishing ability of phononic crystals to control acoustic or elastic waves has been demonstrated. As an elastic wave modulates in time both the shape and the refractive index of the supporting structure, it is possible to influence the optical response of the same system. We propose a subwavelength optomechanical structure that instead relies on a double resonance to achieve strong modulation at near-infrared wavelengths. Precisely, we investigate the coupling between an optical Fano resonant mode and phononic resonances carried within a 2D metamaterial. The latter was designed to exhibit simultaneous phononic and photonic high Q-factor resonances and it is composed of silver slits deposited on a lithium niobate substrate. The phononic properties are first determined and show that several vibration modes can be electrically induced through the specific design of the structure that behaves as an interdigitated transducer. The structure geometries for each mode is then determined over an acoustic period and used to point out the optical transmission modifications when the structure is illuminated at the normal incidence by a linearly polarized plane wave. Original results are obtained for some modes (the first two odd phononic modes) showing a very efficient and non-linear modification of the transmitted intensity. Different operating procedures are then explored by changing the operation optical wavelength value. This study opens the way to the design of a new generation of extremely miniaturized optoacoustic devices.

Abstract: The design of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platforms based on the coupling between plasmonic nanostructures and stimuli-responsive polymers has attracted considerable interest over the past decades for the detection of a wide range of analytes, including pollutants and biological molecules. However, the SERS intensity of analytes trapped inside smart hybrid nanoplatforms is subject to important fluctuations because of the spatial and spectral variation of the plasmonic near-field enhancement (i.e., its dependence with the distance to the nanoparticle surface and with the localized surface plasmon resonance). Such fluctuations may impair interpretation and quantification in sensing devices. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the plasmonic near-field profile upon the Raman signal intensity of analytes trapped inside thermoresponsive polymer-coated gold nanoarrays. For this, well-defined plasmonic arrays (nanosquares and nanocylinders) were modified by poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes using surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization. Molecular probes were trapped inside these Au@PNIPAM nanostructures by simple physisorption or by covalent grafting at the end of PNIPAM brushes, using click chemistry. The SERS spectra of molecular probes were studied along various heating/cooling cycles, demonstrating a strong correlation between SERS intensities and near-field spectral profile of underlying nanoparticles, as confirmed by simulations based on the finite difference time domain method. Thermoresponsive plasmonic devices thus provide an ideal dynamic SERS platform to investigate the influence of the near-field plasmonic profile upon the SERS response of analytes.

Abstract: Plasmonic nanostructures arranged in regular arrays support lattice plasmon modes. Such arrays supporting lattice modes can provide improved platforms in the context of non-linear optics, molecular sensing, plasmon-based lasers, or surface enhanced spectroscopies. These lattice modes are characterized by a reduced linewidth of the resonance and an important improvement in its quality factor. In this work, we discuss the impact of these particular resonances on the far-field plasmonic response, in relation to their near-field optical properties. In particular, our results evidence that for inter-particle distances higher than a critical grating constant, the maximum of near-field enhancement is blue-shifted compared to the far-field localized surface plasmon wavelength, which is the opposite of the usual trend.

Abstract: International audience; Acousto-optical interaction describes the modification of the optical properties of a material system under the action of an acoustic wave that moves the equilibrium positions of the atoms composing the medium of propagation. The effect is usually considered in the frame of perturbation theory and limited to the first Born approximation. Hence, acousto-optical interaction can produce significant effects only if diffracted optical waves from a large number of periods of the acoustic wave add coherently. Can we escape the small perturbation regimeand design a system for which the AO interaction is strong even though the interaction length is smaller than the wavelength? This is the question we consider in this communication. Specifically, we exhibit a nano-optical system whose transmission can be strongly modulated when sustaining a resonant acoustic wave excited thanks to piezoelectricity of the substrate. The system is composed of a periodic array of π-resonant optical cavities formed by metal ridges on a lithium niobate substrate. As such, the array forms a one-dimensional phoxonic crystal structure. The array supports a Γ-point optical resonance appearing in the light cone that creates a dip in the transmission for normal incidence of optical plane waves. The array simultaneously supports localized mechanical resonances that are efficiently excited by a radio-frequency electric signal, creating a large amplitude flexural motion of the metal ridges. Indeed, those ridges are metal electrodes that naturally constitute a transducer for surface acoustic waves. As we show based on a combination of finite-element time-domain (FDTD) and finite element analysis, flexural motion of the metal ridges at a resonant acoustic frequency produces a strongly nonlinear modulation of the optical transmission when the vibration amplitude increases [5]. Numerical simulations performed for silver ridges on a lithium niobate substrate suggest that transmission modulation approaching 100% at GHz frequencies should be feasible, for flexural vibrations of about 10 nm of amplitude and for a thickness of the nano-optical system of only 300 nm.

Abstract: The vacuum spark spectrum of erbium is observed in the wavelength region 705–2460 A where transitions between the low-lying configurations , , and take place. Predictions of energy levels and electric dipole transition probabilities by means of the Cowan codes served for a complete revised analysis of the spectrum. The identification of 591 spectral lines as transitions mostly between low levels of these four configurations led to the determination of 120 energy levels. Radial parameters obtained in least-squares fits of both parities are compared with ab initio Hartree–Fock integrals including relativistic corrections. The mean error of the fits are respectively 41 cm−1 for 38 known levels of the odd parity configurations + and 49 cm−1 for 82 known levels of the even configurations + .

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, theoretical study using density functional theory (DFT) method (B3LYP level with 6-31G(d,p)) of four novel low band gap acceptor-donor organic materials based on thiophene and phenyl and linked to cyanoacrylic acid as acceptor group are investigated. Different electron side groups were introduced to investigate their effects on the electronic structure; the HOMO, LUMO, gap energy, ionization potentials, electron affinities and open circuit voltage (V oc) of these compounds have been calculated and reported in this paper. The electronic absorption and emission spectra of these dyes are studied by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. A systematic theoretical study of such compound has not been reported as we know. Thus, our aim is first, to explore their electronic and spectroscopic properties on the basis of the DFT quantum chemical calculations. We think that the presented study of structural, electronic and optical properties for these compounds could help in designing more efficient functional photovoltaic organic materials. © 2015 Iranian Chemical Society.

La force de gravité a été compensée par l'application d'une force de thermophorèse de même intensité et de direction opposée. Des poudres chargées positivement ou négativement ainsi que des poudres non chargées ont été observées. Ces charges résiduelles peuvent se maintenir pendant plus de 1 minute après l'arrêt de la décharge. La charge électrique résiduelle moyenne pour des poudres d'environ 200 nm de rayon a été mesurée à environ −5e pour une pression de 1, 2 mbar et −3e pour une pression de 0, 4 mbar. La charge électrique résiduelle sur les poudres étant reliée aux phénomènes de diffusion (ambipolaire et libre) des espèces chargées du plasma (ions et électrons), des mesures de densité électronique dans des plasmas post-décharges d'argon pur et d'argon/méthane (plasma poussiéreux) ont été effectuées afin de comprendre l'influence des poudres sur les mécanismes de perte des électrons. Ces mesures ont montré que la présence de poudres provoque d'abord une augmentation rapide de la densité électronique à l'arrêt du plasma suivie d'une décroissance accélérée.

Abstract: We investigate the morphology of a toroidal fluid membrane vesicle confined inside a spherical container. The equilibrium shapes are assembled in a geometrical phase diagram as a function of scaled area and reduced volume of the membrane. For small area the vesicle can adopt its free form. When increasing the area, the membrane cannot avoid contact and touches the confining sphere along a circular contact line, which extends to a zone of contact for higher area. The elastic energies of the equilibrium shapes are compared to those of their confined counterparts of spherical topology to predict under which conditions a topology change is favored energetically., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We study theoretically the potentiality of dual phononic-photonic (the so-called phoxonic) crystals for liquid sensing applications. We investigate the existence of well-defined features (peaks or dips) in the transmission spectra of acoustic and optical waves and estimate their sensitivity to the sound and light velocities of the liquid environment. Two different sensors are investigated. In the first one, we study the in-plane transmission through a two-dimensional (2D) crystal made of cylindrical holes in a Si substrate where one row of holes is filled with a liquid. In the second one, the out of plane propagation is investigated when considering the transmission of the incident wave perpendicular to a periodic array of holes in a slab. Such ultra compact structure is shown to be a label-free, affinity-based acoustic and optical nanosensor, useful for biosensing applications in which the amount of analyte can be often limited.

Abstract: International audience; This theoretical work reports a parametric study of enhanced transmission through annular aperture array (AAA) structure arranged in a triangular lattice. The effect of the incidence angle in addition to the inner and outer radii values on the evolution of the transmission spectra is carried out. To this end, a 3D Finite-Difference Time-Domain code based on the Split Field Method (SFM) is used to calculate the spectral response of the structure for any angle of incidence. In order to work through an orthogonal unit cell which presents the advantage to reduce time and space of computation, special periodic boundary conditions are implemented. This study provides a new modeling of AAA structures useful for producing tunable ultra-compact devices.

Abstract: International audience; The optical properties of infinite and isolated chains of poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) are studied using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the Local Density Approximation (LDA) with norm-conserving pseudopotentials to replace the core electrons. We investigate theoretically the influence of several structural modifications of conjugated polymers on the band gap and the optical properties. Our results show that the band gap for isolated chains of PPV depends on the chain length. We also find that for both PPV and PPP one-dimensional chain polymers, the optical properties are strongly affected by the torsion angles.

Abstract: Photonic crystals and their acoustic counterpart, the so-called phononic crystals are now well-known for their ability to guide, control, and manipulate the propagation of the optic and acoustic waves. These properties are mainly related to the possibility of band gaps in their band structure that allow the existence of localized modes and confined optic/acoustic waves. Moreover, during the past few years, there has been an increasing interest towards structures exhibiting simultaneous phononic and photonic band gaps, the so-called phoxonic crystals, thus allowing dual confinement of phonons and photons. From the point of view of sensing applications, several papers have already shown the capability of photonic crystals for detecting small variations in the refractive index of gases and liquids and have opened the way to a platform for a new class of sensors. In contrast, phononic crystals have only been recently proposed as a possible platform for the investigation of the acoustic velocity of a liquid filling the hollow parts of the structure. Thus, the potentiality of different geometries of phononic crystals for sensing applications still needs several further investigations. Moreover, some of the structures may be suitable for a dual measurement of both acoustic and optical velocities of the analyte. The objective of this presentation is to partly fill the lack of knowledge in these topics. To make a phononic/photonic sensor, one needs to design a structure in which the transmission coefficient displays well-defined features that are very sensitive to the acoustic/optic velocity of the infiltrating liquid. These features should be relatively isolated in frequency in order to allow the sensing of the probed parameter on a sufficiently broad range. In this paper, we investigate theoretically the transmission spectra in several geometries of phononic crystals and discuss the physical origin of the peaks and dips in the spectra and their usefulness for the sensing applications. The emphasis will first be put on the phononic behaviors and then possibly completed with the trends of the photonic transmissions. For the sake of simplicity, the solid parts of the structures are assumed to be made of silicon. We will show that several situations are suitable for independent determinations of the acoustic velocity and the index of refraction of the liquid while some constraints can appear on the geometrical parameters to make a dual phononic/photonic sensor. The calculations are performed by using either a home-made Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method or the Comsol Multiphysics Finite Element Method (FEM).

Abstract: International audience; In this chapter, we present a brief review on the fundamentals of the FDTD method. We show how to adapt it to the calculation of the photonic band gap structures in the case of 2D periodic (invariant in the third direction) structures. The both in-plane, for the TE and TM polarizations, and off-plane propagations are considered. The last part of this chapter is devoted to FDTD general formulation, based on the Split Field Method technique, for the modeling of bi-periodic gratings that are finished according to the third direction.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this chapter is to present the principle of the FDTD method when applied to the resolution of Maxwell equations. Centered finite differences are used to approximate the value of both time and space derivatives that appear in these equations. The convergence criteria in addition to the boundary conditions (periodic or absorbing ones) are given. The special case of bi-periodic structures illuminated at oblique incidence is solved with the SFM (split field method) technique. In all cases, the dispersion of an eventual metallic media is taken into account through an analytical frequency dependence of the dielectric permittivity. Applications dealing with extraordinary optical transmission are presented and show new results allowing enhanced transmission by excitation of the TEM, a cutoff-less, guided mode of annular aperture arrays engraved into thick silver film.

Abstract: International audience; The electrical parameters of a capacitively coupled radiofrequency (CCRF) discharge change significantly when dust arises in the discharge. This work demonstrates the ability to follow in real time the evolution of the size and of the concentration of dust particles forming in a CCRF discharge from the variation of the electron density and of the self-bias voltage of the active electrode. According to experimental findings, it appears that the variation of this self-bias voltage depends on the surface of the dust particles. This trend is confirmed by an analytical modelling considering the low frequency behaviour of the phenomenon.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a theoretical study showing the mechanism of light transmission through opaque metallic films perforated with nanocoaxial apertures thanks to the excitation of their cutoff-free TEM (Transverse ElectroMagnetic) guided mode. Full three-dimensional Finite Difference Time Domain (3D-FDTD) together with a Body-Of-Revolution FDTD simulation results are presented and discussed in order to optimize this extraordinary transmission. Very promising findings are pointed out opening the path to the design of new devices for both nano-optic and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract: Poly(para-hydroquinone) (PPHQ) was prepared by chemical oxidation reaction using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as an oxidant. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS 13C-NMR), infrared absorption, optical absorption, thermal analysis (TGA and DTA), and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques were used to characterize the obtained PPHQ polymer. The correlation between different experimental results justifies the chemical structure and proves the vibrational and optical properties of this polymer. Theoretical calculations based on ab initio density functional theory and semiempirical Austin Model 1 methods were accomplished to elucidate the structure–property relationship of PPHQ polymer. From oligomer 8-hydroquinone, we have predicted the experimentally observed results. This oligomer is considered as model structure, which reproduces the PPHQ polymer characteristics and elucidates the TiCl4 effect on the properties of the polymer under study. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract: We extend here the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) algorithm working in oblique incidence to dispersive media. The split-field method (SFM) is used and adapted for taking into account the metal dispersion. The additional equations to the FDTD algorithm are given. Instead of the 24 field components usually used in the SFM, 38 and 112 field components are needed to implement the cases of Drude and Drude-Lorentz dispersion models, respectively. Some tests are presented to validate our code as long as the angle of incidence is lower than $76\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ in addition to an application dealing with enhanced transmission and showing original results.

Abstract: International audience; The study of periodic structures illuminated by a normally incident plane wave is a simple task that can be numerically simulated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. On the contrary, for off-normal incidence, a widely modified algorithm must be developed in order to bypass the frequency dependence appearing in the periodic boundary conditions. After recently implementing this FDTD algorithm for pure dielectric materials, we here extend it to the study of metallic structures where dispersion can be described by analytical models. The accuracy of our code is demonstrated through comparisons with already-published results in the case of 1D and 3D structures.

Abstract: Dusty or complex plasmas are partially ionized gas composed of neutral species, ions, electrons, and charged dust particles. In laboratory experiments, these particles can be either injected or grown directly in the plasma. Injected dust particles are usually micron-size particles. Due to their mass, they are confined near the bottom electrode where the electric force counterbalances gravity. The microgravity condition is necessary to study dust clouds of micrometer-size particles filling the whole plasma chamber. In the laboratory, dense clouds of submicron particles light enough to completely fill the gap between the electrodes can be obtained using reactive gases such as silane or using a target sputtered with ions from plasma. Dust-particle charge is a key parameter in complex plasma. It determines the interaction between a dust particle and electrons, ions, its neighboring dust particles, and electric field. However there are only a few papers devoted to dust charging, or decharging to be more specific, in the discharge afterglow. In this paper, we report an on-ground experiment on the residual charge measurement of dust particles after the decay of a dusty plasma. The experiment was performed in the PKE-Nefedov reactor where the dust particles were physically grown in the plasma. A temperature gradient was introduced in the chamber to create an upward thermophoretic force to balance gravity in order to maintain the dust particles in the volume of the chamber when the discharge is switched off. The residual charges were determined from an analysis of dust oscillations, which were excited by applying a sinusoidal bias to the bottom electrode. It was shown that dust particles do keep a residual charge of few electrons and that both positively and negatively charged dust particles coexist in the late plasma afterglow. In order to understand these results, measurements on electron density decay have been performed into other dusty discharges such as argon/methane dilution plasma and sputtering discharge.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to contribute to improve the knowledge concerning the growth steps of hydrocarbon dust particles in Ar-CH4 plasma. To achieve this aim, we monitored the plasma impedance modification, due to the particle formation, by measuring the time-evolution of the self bias voltage, the current third harmonic and the electron density. Emission Spectroscopy turns out to be a good tool for estimating the electron temperature. While, Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy are used to characterize the morphology and the size of collected powders.

Abstract: In 1990, Dyson published a proof due to Feynman of the Maxwell equations assuming only the commutation relations between position and velocity. With this minimal assumption, Feynman never supposed the existence of Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formalism. In the present communication, we review the study of a relativistic particle using ``Feynman brackets.'' We show that Poincar\'e's magnetic angular momentum and Dirac magnetic monopole are the consequences of the structure of the Lorentz Lie algebra defined by the Feynman's brackets. Then, we extend these ideas to the dual momentum space by considering noncommutative quantum mechanics. In this context, we show that the noncommutativity of the coordinates is responsible for a new effect called the spin Hall effect. We also show its relation with the Berry phase notion. As a practical application, we found an unusual spin-orbit contribution of a nonrelativistic particle that could be experimentally tested. Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the study of the growth kinetics of hydrocarbon dust particles in low pressure N2-CH4 gas mixture radio frequency discharges. The partial pressure of CH4 is about 2% of the gas mixture total pressure (0.9 mbar), and the power varies from 20 to 40 W. The initiation and growth of hydrocarbon particles are followed thanks to the measurement of the self bias voltage, the amplitude of the third harmonic of the discharge current, the electron density and the electron temperature. The microwave resonant cavity technique is used to measure the time evolution of the electron density, while the morphology and the size of the collected powders are studied by the means of Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy.

Abstract: y formally diagonalizing with accuracy $\hbar$ the Hamiltonian of electrons in a crystal subject to electromagnetic perturbations, we resolve the debate on the Hamiltonian nature of semiclassical equations of motion with Berry-phase corrections, and therefore confirm the validity of the Liouville theorem. We show that both the position and momentum operators acquire a Berry-phase dependence, leading to a non-canonical Hamiltonian dynamics. Abstract: International audience; A theoretical investigation is presented of the mode propagation and attenuation in a nanometric coaxial waveguide in real metal. By a rapid comparison with other structures, it is established that a coaxial waveguide has propagative modes with very interesting properties: the cutoff wavelengths are very large, they become larger when a perfectly electric conductor is replaced by gold or silver (real metal), and they can be increased when the outer and inner radii are very close one to other. By studying dispersion curves and field structures, it is shown that surface plasmon modes are responsible for these properties. By simply changing the geometrical parameters of the structure, a very large effective index and very low group velocities could be obtained. We also establish that, in spite of the metal losses, a reasonable large propagation length could be obtained (50 µm) which should allow applications for guiding light in nano-optics.

Abstract: Recently a new structure showing a super-enhanced transmission [Optics Commun. 209, 17–22 (2002); Phys. Rev. B, 67, 155314, (2003)] has been proposed. The origin of this phenomenon was not clearly explained. In this paper, by using a numerical Order-N FDTD spectral method, we study the eigenmodes, the band structure and the dispersion curves of a photonic 2-D crystal made with coaxial circular cavities and made from a real metal. We show that the super-enhanced transmission of the finite structure is due to a cavity resonance of a single guided mode. An extensive characterization of this mode is presented, in terms of the spatial mode structure and effective index dispersion curve.

Abstract: International audience; We present here the fabrication and the optical characterization of slanted annular aperture arrays engraved into silver film. An experimental enhanced transmission based on the excitation of the cutoff-less plasmonic guided mode of the nano-waveguides (the transmission electron microscopy mode) is demonstrated and agrees well with the theoretical predicted results. By the way, even if it is less efficient (70% → 20%), an enhanced transmission can occur at larger wavelength value (720 nm-930 nm) compared to conventional annular aperture arrays structure by correctly setting the metal thickness.

Abstract: International audience; Relativistic Density Functional Theory (DFT) based methods coupled with the Conductor-like Screening Model (COSMO) for a realistic solvation approach are used to investigate the electron affinity (EA) of a series of triscyclopentadienyl uranium complexes Cp3UX (X = Cl, BH4, SPh, SiPr and OiPr) related to the U(IV)/U(III) redox system. E1/2 half-wave potentials have been measured in solution (THF) under the same rigorous conditions for all the species under consideration. A good correlation (r2 = 0.99) is found between the computed EA values, either in the gas phase or in solution, and the experimental half-wave potentials; the study brings to light the importance of spin-orbit coupling effects which must be taken into account in order to achieve the observed agreement between theory and experiment. The influence of the electron donating character of the X ligand on the orbital involved in the reduction process, namely the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the neutral U(IV) complexes, and on the EAs is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, we have designed a series of novel double organic D-π-A (electron donor-π-conjugated-acceptor) based on Carbazole, Thiophene and Benzothiadiazole. The optimized structures and optoelectronic properties of these dyes have been investigated by using the Density Functional Theory DFT/B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) method and Time Dependant Density Functional Theory (TD/DFT) calculations. These dyes consist of electron-donor (Carbazole-3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) and-acceptors/anchoring (Benzothiadiazole and Cyanoacrylic), connected by the π-conjugated linker as an electron donor spacer constituted of Thiophene and Phenylene units. The calculated geometries indicate that these dyes have coplanar structures. The LUMO and HOMO energy levels of these dyes can ensure positive effect on the process of electron injection and dye regeneration. In order to predict the band gaps for guiding the synthesis of novel materials with low band gaps, we apply quantum-chemical techniques to calculate the band gaps in several oligomers. The trend of the calculated HOMO-LUMO (Egap) gaps nicely compares with the spectral optical data. A low band gap will be expected in polymers containing double donor-acceptor (D-A) repeating units. The bridging effect by C=C(CN)2 on the optoelectronic properties of the studied compounds is investigated. The calculated results of these dyes demonstrate that these compounds can be used as potential sensitizers for TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cells.

Different electron side groups were introduced to investigate their effects on the electronic structure. The theoretical knowledge of the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the components is basic in studying organic solar cells so the HOMO, LUMO and Gap energy of the studied compounds have been calculated and reported. These properties suggest these materials as a good candidate for organic solar cells.

Abstract: International audience; To understand the importance of the organic material of type donor-π-acceptor dyes (D-π-A), used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), we present in this paper the result of six compounds based on thienopyrazine (D1-D6) studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approaches to shed light on how the π-conjugation order influence the performance of the dyes. The electron acceptor (anchoring) group was 2-cyanoacrylic acid for all dyes whereas the electron-donor unit varied and the influence was investigated. The theoretical results have shown that TD-DFT calculations using the Coulomb attenuating method CAM-B3LYP with the polarized split-valence 6-31G (d, p) basis sets and the polarizable continuum model (PCM) were reasonably capable of predicting the excitation energies, the absorption and the emission spectra of the dyes. The study of structural, electronic and optical properties for these dyes could help to design more efficient functional photovoltaic organic materials. Key parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (Jsc), including light harvesting efficiency (LHE), injection driving force (ΔGinject) and total reorganization energy (ltotal), were discussed.
