Abstract: International audience; In the field of flash sintering, microwave energy represents an interesting way to densify ceramics complex shapes, thanks to a contactless volumetric heating. Attaining a fast and homogeneous heating is a critical parameter and hybrid heating, using silicon carbide susceptors, is generally used. In this study, an original multiple susceptors cascade strategy is developed, using both SiC and 3D-printed ZrO2 susceptors. This novel configuration follows perfectly the flash heating scheme, even for high heating rates up to 1000 K.min-1 and leads to a high stability of the "flash" hybrid heating. Flash microwave sintering produced dense (97% relative density) microstructures within 45 s. Based on comprehensive multiphysics simulations of the overall process, in-situ dilatometry measurements, kinetics method analysis and microstructural characterizations, this work highlights the sintering behavior of zirconia and the temperature distribution during flash microwave sintering.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, two main superconducting compounds have been studied: • The first study was focused on the preparation of magnesium diboride (MgB2) cryo-magnets by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The role of the starting powder on the superconducting properties of MgB2 is investigated. Different sets of bulk MgB2 material were processed from: (i) a commercial available powder, (ii) a mixture of Mg metal and amorphous B using a single-step solid-state reaction process and (iii) a mixture of amorphous boron coated with carbon and Mg metal. The samples were prepared in tungsten carbide moulds varying the processing conditions by the modulation of the temperature, the dwell time and the applied pressure. The microstructures of the samples were investigated by SEM and TEM and correlated to their superconducting properties. The best sample was prepared at 850°C, 20 min and 100 MPa. At 20 K its critical current density (Jc) was 500 kA/cm2. Here in, we demonstrate that MgB2 is an excellent candidate to make cryo-magnets, maintaining 3.9 T at 20 K at the surface of a 20 mm diameter disk.• The SPS was modified with the aim of obtaining textured lamellar compounds with Bi2Ca2Sr2CuO8 superconductor ceramics. The new process is referred to as “Spark Plasma Texturing” (SPT). During SPT, the bulk material can freely deform itself. As a result, the formation of an inter-grain preferential crystallographic orientation is favoured. The superconducting properties were measured and discussed in correlation with textured microstructure analysis.

Abstract: WOS:000418212400009; International audience; The main objectives of this work were to manufacture adobes with good mechanical properties, even in a wet environment, and low thermal conductivity so as to give the population homes that provided better thermal comfort than cement-based constructions. For this purpose, clayey raw material from Burkina Faso, mainly composed of quartz (49 wt%), kaolinite (28 wt%), goethite (7 wt%) and muscovite (9 wt%) was mixed with up to 12 wt% of cement to manufacture adobes. Various characterization techniques were implemented to assess the microstructure of these materials: X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Their physical properties were also investigated (through water absorption, spray test, apparent density, porosity and thermal conductivity) as their mechanical characteristics (compressive and flexural strengths). It was found that the addition of cement resulted in the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) (I), ettringite and calcite. The CSH was formed partly through the hydration of anhydrous cement compounds (alite and belite) and also through pozzolanic reactions strongly involving finely crushed quartz and, to a lesser extent, kaolinite. These cement-stabilized adobes were particularly distinguished by good mechanical resistance even in a wet environment, and low thermal conductivity. These results indicate that adobes stabilized with 2 wt% of cement are suitable for use as building materials for mass housing. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; A simple and effective preparation of solution-processed chalcogenide thermoelectric materials is described. First, PbTe, PbSe, and SnSe were prepared by gram-scale colloidal synthesis relying on the reaction between metal acetates and diphenyl dichalcogenides in hexadecylamine solvent. The resultant phase-pure chalcogenides consist of highly crystalline and defect- free particles with distinct cubic-, tetrapod-, and rod-like morphologies. The powdered PbTe, PbSe, and SnSe products were subjected to densification by spark plasma sintering (SPS), affording dense pellets of the respective chalcogenides. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the SPS-derived pellets exhibit fine nano-/micro-structures dictated by the original morphology of the key constituting particles, while the powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy analyses confirm that the SPS-derived pellets are phase-pure materials, preserving the structure of the colloidal synthesis products. The resultant solution-processed PbTe, PbSe, and SnSe exhibit low thermal conductivity, which might be due to the enhanced phonon scattering developed over fine microstructures. For undoped n-type PbTe and p-type SnSe samples, an expected moderate thermoelectric performance is achieved. In contrast, an outstanding figure-of-merit of 0.73 at 673 K was achieved for undoped n-type PbSe outperforming, the majority of the optimized PbSe-based thermoelectric materials. Overall, our findings facilitate the design of efficient solution-processed chalcogenide thermoelectrics.

Abstract: International audience; There is a growing interest in on-site, real-time analytical solutions for mining and environmental projects to characterize large areas and/or volumes of raw materials that are sometimes highly heterogeneous in terms of elemental distribution and mineralogy. Several fast and cost-effective methods are used for rapid on-site screening and real-time chemical and mineralogical characterization, such as portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) and X-ray diffraction (pXRD). However, these methods are not always applicable due to limitations in the detection and quantification of light elements (Mg, Al, Si) for pXRF or complex or minor minerals for pXRD, whose results need to be supported by laboratory analysis.This study presents a new methodological approach for in situ rapid chemical and mineralogical characterization of samples, based on the use of a transportable instrument (called ID2B) that allows, in a single acquisition step, a combined XRD-XRF analysis to identify and quantify the chemical elements and their associated minerals. The HI0 harzburgite sample from New Caledonia used to evaluate the data was analyzed in the laboratory (SEM-EDS, EPMA, XRF and XRD) and with the ID2B instrument to highlight the potential of our new methodology. In order to demonstrate the interest of using the ID2B combined XRF-XRD analysis approach directly in the field, where sample preparation is not always easy to implement, this comparison was made on the same sample (HI0), prepared in two different ways, either as a powderized (optimal preparation) or as-sawn (unprepared) sample. After automated processing of the combined XRF-XRD datasets acquired with the ID2B instrument, the chemical elements and mineralogical phases identified on both the powder and as-sawn samples are identical to the laboratory analyses.The chemical proportions calculated from the combined XRF-XRD data sets are also close to the laboratory XRF analysis with relative errors

Abstract: International audience; The recent paper by Deng et al. showed that a copper sulphide with Cu7Sn3S10 composition is a promising thermoelectric material reaching a figure of merit ZT of 0.8 at 750 K via Cl doping. However, structural reinvestigations of the Cu7Sn3S10 sample (i.e., Cu2.10Sn0.90S3) prepared in the reported conditions show that the phase of interest is not tetragonal (space group I (4) over bar 2m, a(t) = 5.4164 angstrom, c(t) = 10.832 angstrom), but crystallizes in the cubic symmetry (space group P (4) over bar 3n, a(c) = 10.832 angstrom) with a composition close to Cu22Sn10S32 similar to the results published by Pavan Kumar et al. These observations indicate that the main phase around the composition Cu7Sn3S10 is cubic, and a revision needs to be imposed for the understanding of the relationships between the structure and thermoelectric properties in this family.

Abstract: International audience; A chiral 3D coordination compound, [Gd2(L)2(ox)2(H2O)2], arranged around a dinuclear Gd unit has been characterized by X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption measurements in the context of density functional theory studies. Core level photoemission of the Gd 5p multiplet splittings indicates that spin orbit coupling dominates over j–J coupling evident in the 5p core level spectra of Gd metal. Indications of spin–orbit coupling are consistent with the absence of inversion symmetry due to the ligand field. Density functional theory predicts antiferromagnet alignment of the Gd2 dimers and a band gap of the compound consistent with optical absorption.

Abstract: CERVOXY; International audience; Investigating the effect of pressure sheds light on the dynamics and plasticity of proteins, intrinsically correlated to functional efficiency. Here we detail the structural response to pressure of neuroglobin (Ngb), a hexacoordinate globin likely to be involved in neuroprotection. In murine Ngb, reversible coordination is achieved by repositioning the heme more deeply into a large internal cavity, the “heme sliding mechanism”. Combining high pressure crystallography and coarse-grain simulations on wild type Ngb as well as two mutants, one (V101F) with unaffected and another (F106W) with decreased affinity for CO, we show that Ngb hinges around a rigid mechanical nucleus of five hydrophobic residues (V68, I72, V109, L113, Y137) during its conformational transition induced by gaseous ligand, that the intrinsic flexibility of the F-G loop appears essential to drive the heme sliding mechanism, and that residue Val 101 may act as a sensor of the interaction disruption between the heme and the distal histidine.

Abstract: International audience; Codoped (Tb,Eu) ZnO films grown by magnetron sputtering on a silicon substrate and annealed up to 1200 °C showed intense photoluminescence (PL) emission from Eu3+ ions. The high-temperature annealing led to diffusion and segregation of rare earth (RE) elements toward the bottom of the film, which induced the formation of nanometric Zn-free inclusions responsible for remarkable PL emission intensity. Combined electron diffraction, chemical contrast imaging, and optical studies of these nanometric phases have been carried out. Large inclusions of zinc silicates and RE silicates a few hundreds of nanometers in size were observed, embedded in a silica phase. The structural determination of these RE-rich inclusions was carried out by combining atomic Z contrast imaging (high-angle annular dark-field imaging) and precession electron diffraction data. Upon annealing at 1200 °C, it appeared that the structure was related to an F-type disilicate structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments were carried out to determine the ratios between elements and the oxidation states of the RE elements in the abovementioned inclusions. A (Tb,Eu)2Si2O7 formulation is proposed from dynamical precession electron diffraction tomography refinements, leading to a +III valence state for the RE species in agreement with spectroscopic results. PL modeling is also in good agreement with the experimental data. These results complete those obtained at 1100 °C for which the inclusions were identified as some RE10–x(SiO4)6O2–x oxyapatite structures and pointed out a combined structural and PL properties’ evolution between 1100 and 1200 °C annealing temperatures.

Abstract: International audience; Formic acid is considered as one of the most promising liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). Its catalytic dehydrogenation processes generally suffer from low activity, low reaction selectivity, low stability of the catalysts and/or the use of noble-metal based catalysts. Herein, we report a highly selective, efficient, and noble metal-free photocatalyst for the dehydrogenation of formic acid. This catalyst is built from a post-metalation of a carboxylic-functionalized Zr-MOF by copper, namely UiO-66(COOH)2-Cu. The visible light driven photocatalytic dehydrogenation process through the release of hydrogen and carbon dioxide is monitored in real-time via operando FTIR and reveals almost 100% of selectivity with high stability (over 3 days) and conversion yield exceeding 60% (around 5 mmol.g-1 cat.h-1) at ambient conditions. These performance indicators make UiO-66(COOH)2-Cu among the top photocatalysts for formic acid dehydrogenation. Interestingly, the as-prepared UiO-66(COOH)2-Cu hetero-nanostructure was found moderately active under solar irradiation during an induction phase, whereupon it undergoes an in-situ restructuring process through intra-framework cross-linking with the formation of the anhydride analogue structure, UiO-66(COO)2-Cu, and nano-clustering of highly active and stable copper sites as evidenced by the operando studies coupled with steady state isotopic transient kinetic (SSITKA) experiment, TEM, XPS analysis and DFT calculations. Beyond revealing outstanding catalytic performance for UiO-66(COO)2-Cu, this work delivers an in-depth understanding of the photocatalytic reaction mechanism implying an evolutive behavior of the post-metalated copper as well as the MOF framework over the reaction. These key findings pave the ways towards the engineering of new simple and efficient catalysts for photocatalytic dehydrogenation of formic acid.

Abstract: International audience; The surface modification of metal oxides by grafting an organic molecule allows the development of new specific properties on demand. In this work, we demonstrate the modification of the Yttria Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (Y-TZP), which is a ceramic widely used in dental implantology, by polymer grafting of the surface in a three-steps protocol for tuning the wetting properties. The first step involved the preparation of zirconia pellet by sintering followed by their surface activation. In the second step, the organic initiator bearing a tertiary amine such as the N,N-dimethylamino group capable of initiating a radical photopolymerization reaction, was grafted onto the surface through a bisphosphonic acid functionality. In the last step, two monomers, namely methyl methacrylate and styrene, were photopolymerized on the zirconia surface by blue light irradiation.The chemical steps were monitored and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Wetting properties to different polar and nonpolar liquids and surface energies calculated with the Van Oss theory were found to vary systematically depending on the type of functionalization and grafting. This methodology is very promising for surface tuning of the dental ceramic.

Abstract: International audience; Mass mortality events affecting the blue mussels Mytilus edulis have been observed in France since 2014. The DNA of the bacterium Francisella halioticida, reported as pathogen of giant abalone (Haliotis gigantea) and Yesso scallop (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) has been detected recently in mussels from areas suffering mortalities. Isolation of this bacterium was attempted from individuals collected during mortality events. Identification was performed by16S rRNA gene sequencing, real-time specific PCR and MALDI-ToF using spectra produced from the strain 8472-13A isolated from diseased Yesso scallop in Canada. Five isolates were identified as F. halioticida by real-time specific PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing. MALDI-ToF allowed the direct identification of four isolates(FR22a,b,c,d) which had 100% identity on the 16S rRNA gene with the known strains. On the other hand, one isolate (FR21) was not recognized by MALDI-ToF and had 99.9% identity on the 16S rRNA gene. The FR22 isolates showed difficult growth and required media optimization, which was not the case with the FR21 isolate. For these reasons, it was hypothesized that two type strains are present on French coasts, named FR21 and FR22. The FR21 isolate was selected for phenotypic analysis (growth curve, biochemical characteristics, electron microscopy), phylogenetic analysis and an experimental challenge.This isolate showed distinct differences compared to published F. halioticida strains, both at phenotypic and genotypic levels. Experimental infections of adult mussels led to 36% mortalities in 23 days following intramuscular injection with 3 x 107 CFU while a lower dose (3 x 103 CFU) did not lead to significant mortalities. In the context of this study, the strain FR21 was not virulent towards adult mussels.

Abstract: International audience; In the Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE) approach, a thin film is grown at high temperature on a polycrystalline substrate. Those substrates induce a local film epitaxy on each substrate grain and an overall polycrystalline character on the macroscopic scale. Compared to single-crystalline films, this approach provides the possibility to introduce, in a controlled way, grain boundaries providing new functionalities. Therefore, controlling the microstructure and grain size of the substrates is an important step for tuning the film properties. In this paper, a complete study of the granular growth of the standard substrate material for the deposition of perovskite thin films, SrTiO3, has been carried out with different isothermal cycles highlighting the grain growth mechanisms. From these results, we are able to predict the sintering thermal cycle necessary for targeting very precisely a desired grain size and the corresponding physical properties. Indeed, highly restraint physical properties specifications are needed for advanced electronic applications. Since a classic granular growth model was used, this approach can be generalized to the broad family of oxides.

Abstract: This article demonstrates the value of atomic force microscopes, particularly the different electrical modes, for characterizing complex microelectronic structures. It presents experimental results obtained from deep trench isolation (DTI) structures using SCM and SSRM analysis with emphasis on the voltage applied by the AFM. From these measurements, a failure analysis workflow is proposed that facilitates AFM voltage optimization to reveal the structure of cross-sectioned samples, make comparisons, and determine the underlying cause of failures.

Abstract: International audience; The first demonstration of a nanoscaled titanium zirconium nitride (TiZrN2) single-phase isolated during the preparation of polymer-derived silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix nanocomposites is discussed. We employed a polysilazane, which was chemically modified with Zr[N(CH2CH3)2]4 and Ti[N(CH3)2]4 then ammonolyzed before a pyrolysis step under ammonia (1000 °C) and a heat-treatment in flowing nitrogen (1000–1700 °C). Based on a careful control of the precursor chemistry in the early stage of the process and nano-/microstructural investigations of the material performed during its preparation, we were able to identify TiZrN2 nanocrystals with a size as low as 9 nm distributed in α- and β-Si3N4 phases at a temperature as low as 1500 °C. We particularly proved that the TiZrN2 nanophase could be generated because of the use of the polysilazane evoluting towards a covalently-bonded Si3N4 matrix . This unique nanostructure is expected to provide particular functionality to Si3N4 as noble metal-free catalysts and components with high plasmonic quality.

Abstract: International audience; The possibility of anodic oxidation of SiC surfaces by a strong, local electric field applied during Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under ambient conditions is an interesting method to achieve nanopatterning of SiC, but is also a side-effect to be well characterized and controlled during this kind of AFM measurements if used to determine the local electric properties. In this contribution, we will analyze the local electric fields by finite element simulations in order to quantify the effect of the presence of a water meniscus and of an oxide layer on the SiC surface. Furthermore, we will experimentally highlight the strong influence of the local doping on the anodization, leading to the formation of thicker oxide layers at the location of highly doped SiC. Therefore, the location of these areas can be determined by a simple AFM topography scan after the application of a high field, allowing to detect highly doped SiC areas in complex structures as for example SiC MOSFETs.

Afin d’aider à la caractérisation des pathologies des sujets immatures, le CRAHAM a mené de 2020 à 2022 le programme de recherche ANCESTOR en collaboration avec la plate-forme d’imagerie CYCERON, le centre de microscopie CMABio3, le laboratoire CRISMAT et en partenariat avec La Fabrique de patrimoines en Normandie. Cette recherche, financée par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du programme opérationnel FEDER/ FSE 2014-2020, avait pour objectif d’obtenir des protocoles fiables d’analyse de pathologies osseuses, de troubles de croissance et de pathologies carentielles des enfants entre 0 et 5 ans. Envisagé pour constituer une aide à une meilleure évaluation paléopathologique des populations normandes de l’Antiquité à la période moderne, ce programme a permis de constituer un référentiel ostéologique s’appuyant sur la complémentarité des examens macroscopiques, radiographiques, microtomographiques et histologiques. Par la mise en place d’un protocole descriptif standardisé, nous avons cherché à identifier le pouvoir prédictif de l’aspect de surface du périoste sur les aspects osseux visibles par radiographie, microtomographie et histologie. Pour cela, nous nous sommes appuyés sur un corpus de 39 individus décédés avant l’âge de 3 ans et inhumés dans des cimetières normands médiévaux et modernes. Les résultats montrent que les descriptions macroscopiques sont faiblement associées aux autres descriptions et que la combinaison de plusieurs méthodes d’analyse est indispensable pour établir un lien entre l’aspect de surface et les modifications tissulaires. Ces résultats permettront d’orienter les choix méthodologiques dans l’optique d’élaborer un modèle interprétatif logiciste de diagnostic utilisable par la communauté archéo-anthropologique pour l’identification de maladies ou de carences osseuses des sujets immatures.

Abstract: International audience; Advances in the melt-growth synthesis technique for preparing superconducting REBaCuO bulks allow the production and commercialisation of single crystals with a diameter of about 10 cm. This is in close agreement with the development of new applications such as electric motors where superconducting bulks are used as trapped field magnets or magnetic screens [1], [2]. It is then crucial to determine the superconducting properties such as critical temperature, critical current density and irreversible magnetic field, which is usually done using MPMS-SQUID on a millimetre size sample. In this study, the characterisation of a 10 cm wide commercial bulk machined for use as a magnetic shield is presented, see Fig. 1. 24 orthorhombic samples were extracted at different positions from the centre of the bulk, prepared and measured on a 14 T MPMS with a VSM head. A comparison of the superconducting properties of each sample will be presented together with the trapped field measurements performed on 10 other wide REBaCuO bulks. This will provide an opportunity to discuss the state of the art of this technology and its possible future development and will highlight the need to measure superconducting properties in different positions. Abstract: International audience; Catalytic dehydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC), such as formic acid (FAc), is considered as a promising approach to safely store and easily transport hydrogen at ambient conditions. Generally, this process suffers from low activity, low reaction selectivity, low stability of the catalysts and/or the use of noble-metal based catalysts. In this study, a highly efficient CuFe$_2$O$_4$-based photocatalyst is reported for the photocatalytic dehydrogenation of FAc under visible light at room temperature and under continuous gas flow. The effects of various factors such as composition of the catalysts and thermal pretreatment are investigated along a series of samples. The synthesis, dispersion, oxidation states, photo-electrochemical properties and performances of these materials were investigated in details. A synergetic effect, with relatively high dehydrogenation selectivity (77% with 6.6 mmol.g$^{-1}$ .h$^{-1}$ of H$_2$ production) is obtained on the copper-rich samples without any significant deactivation for two cycles of 20h/cycle. This study opens up a new route to design new Cu-based photocatalysts as cost-effective materials for visible-light driven photocatalytic dehydrogenation of FAc at room temperature.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we demonstrate that atomic force microscopy allows topography measurement as well as the local electrical properties of very high-doped polysilicon film prior to any subsequent annealing. AFM and TEM observations showed the columnar microstructure of the polysilicon layer. The electrical effect of this microstructure was characterized using SCM, KFM and C-AFM. Each electric mode gives additional information on the local properties of the polysilicon layer.

Abstract: International audience; Searching for solar-absorbing materials containing earth-abundant elements with chemical stability is of critical importance for advancing photovoltaic technologies. Mott insulators have been theoretically proposed as potential photovoltaic materials. In this paper, we evaluate their performance in solar cells by exploring the photovoltaic properties of Mott insulator LaVO3 (LVO). LVO films show an indirect band gap of 1.08 eV as well as strong light absorption over a wide wavelength range in the solar spectrum. First-principles calculations on the band structure of LVO further reveal that the d−d transitions within the upper and lower Mott-Hubbard bands and p−d transitions between the O 2p and V 3d band contribute to the absorption in visible and ultraviolet ranges, respectively. Transport measurements indicate strong carrier trapping and the formation of polarons in LVO. To utilize the strong light absorption of LVO and to overcome its poor carrier transport, we incorporate it as a light absorber in solar cells in conjunction with carrier transporters and evaluate its device performance. Our complementary experimental and theoretical results on such prototypical solar cells made of Mott-Hubbard transition-metal oxides pave the road for developing light-absorbing materials and photovoltaic devices based on strongly correlated electrons.

Abstract: International audience; We report bulk dilatometry and diffraction data through the T MIT = 427 K metal-insulator transition of the n = 3 member of the V n O 2n-1 Magnéli series. Besides VO 2 , V 3 O 5 is the only other vanadium oxide with a potentially useful MIT transition above room temperature. A narrow (ΔT = 10 K) abrupt negative thermal expansion of α L =-21.4 x 10-6 (dilatometry) and α V =-213 x 10-6 K-1 (crystallographic) is observed. We argue that the combination of the MIT along with the simultaneous vanadium charge ordering are responsible for such large values. The low temperature magnetic properties are also clarified and neutron diffraction measurements show a k = [½ ½ 0] magnetic structure at 1.5 K. DFT calculations of the exchange interactions support the low dimensionality and allow modelling the magnetic susceptibility.

Abstract: International audience; Disordered rock salt (DRS) cathodes have attracted considerable attention because of their high first charge capacities and relatively low cost. Here we investigate operando the structure and charge evolution of the Li 1.1 Mn 0.7 Ti 0.2 O 2 Li-excess rock salt cathode with a first charge capacity of 270 mA h g À1. We associate a certain extent of the capacity fade in DRS to the in situ formation of locally ordered layered nanodomains during the electrochemical cycling of the longrange cation disordered rock salt. We quantify the short-range ordering of cations during cycling and evaluate its effect on the lithium-ion diffusion and charge compensation using operando studies based on X-ray total scattering and advanced spectroscopic methods at the Mn K-edge, namely high energy resolution fluorescence detected XANES and emission spectroscopies including main and valence-to-core transitions.

Abstract: International audience; The CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODH-CO2) attracts a lot of research interest since it combines greenhouse gas utilization with the production of valuable chemicals. The present study demonstrates the potential of the novel non-classic catalysts, alkali thiogallates, in this reaction. The contribution also reports a novel solvothermal synthesis method to prepare crystalline KGaS2 thiogallate materials. Despite the low surface area of the bulk KGaS2 system, the material shows substantial activity in CO2 to CO transformation with conversions in the range of 22-36% at 700-800 °C. The catalyst allows utilization of the co-produced hydrogen from ethane thermal cracking for CO2 hydrogenation without substantially impacting ethylene yield even at 800 o C at the conversion level of ethane close to 70%. The catalyst demonstrates stable performance with insignificant coke formation. The structure of the KGaS2 thiogallate material is fully conserved after the reaction. These results open a promising opportunity for the thiogallate materials as catalysts with moderate hydrogenation function, which are highly tolerant to the CO and highly reactive hydrocarbons environments.

Abstract: International audience; Flash sintering is a very promising method with a great potential for the ultra-rapid production of objects with firing processes of mere seconds. However, the transition from few millimeters samples to larger scales is a key issue. In this study, we explore the spark plasma sintering approach allowing a stable hybrid heating in flash condition and producing near net shape sintered specimens. Two electric current configurations are employed for diameters of 15 and 30 mm to determine the effect of scale change and of electric current concentration. These experiments coupled with a Multiphysics simulation indicate that stable flash conditions can be reached for 30 mm specimens. However, even if the electrical current concentration is very effective at small sizes, it generates peripheral hot spots for large specimen dimensions. The blackening effect on zirconia flash specimens acts then as an indicator of the specimen thermal history.

Abstract: International audience; Additive Manufacturing is a powerful process to build complex geometry. Besides the numerous process parameters influencing the mechanical part performances, others parameters related to the initial powder feedstock or component machining are of most importance. In this study, the combined effect of a wide particle size distribution, surface machining and stress-relief heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties (tension and fatigue) of a stainless steel AISI 316L, produced by laser powder bed fusion, is investigated. In order to correctly investigate those parameters separately, the netshape/machined character of the sample, alongside with the heat treatment is studied for two kinds of powder having different particle size distributions, i.e, narrow and widely spread. Results show that a large spread of particle size is only slightly detrimental to the fatigue life, in particular in high cycle conditions due to a larger porosity related to a weakly more uneven particle spatial distribution in the bed. Nevertheless, this effect is of a second order compared to machining or heat treatments which greatly affect the mechanical behaviour. Surface machining and moderate heat treatment are then the best post-operational steps to increase the fatigue life in high cycle fatigue conditions independently of the particle size distribution. Abstract: International audience; Depuis plus de 30 ans, la Microscopie à Force Atomique (AFM) a démontré sa capacité à accéder aux propriétés locales de la matière. Très connue pour l’acquisition de la topographie, la technique s’est dotée au fil des années de nombreux modes permettant notamment de cartographier les propriétés mécaniques et électriques à l’échelle nanométrique.Les travaux de recherches présentés dans cet ouvrage traitent quatre modes : le mode mécanique (le Peak Force Tapping Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping (PF-QNM™)), et trois modes électriques (le Scanning Capacitance Microscopy (SCM), le Scanning Spreading Resistance Microscopy (SSRM) et le scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM)), spécifiquement pour la microélectronique fortement intégrée.De l’interaction pointe-matière à la nanocaractérisation électrique et mécanique par AFM présente les résultats expérimentaux pour différents cas d’études relatifs au composant microélectronique : du boitier packaging aux profils de dopage du semiconducteur. Basée sur la physique du contact à l’échelle nanoscopique, l’analyse fine de chaque mode expose l’impact des paramètres de mesure et parvient à la mise en place de méthodologies expérimentales.

Abstract: This manuscript deals with the structural characterization of phases formed after annealing at high temperatures in the case of thin films of zinc oxide doped with a lanthanide such as europium, terbium and erbium. The case of a zinc oxide film co-doped with terbium and europium has been studied as well. This thesis also focuses on the structural characterization of a new compound with an oxysulfide matrix : Ca4Fe5S4O6. In these two cases, transmission electron microscopy and its various techniques such as diffraction tomography, interference and chemical imaging as well as spectroscopy methods allowed us to resolve the crystalline structures, to study the atom arrays and the oxidation states of elements. The characterized structures have made it possible to explain the photoluminescence properties in the case of films doped with lanthanides and the magnetic properties in the case of oxysulfide.; Ce manuscrit porte sur l’étude de phases nanométriques formées après recuit à hautes températures dans le cas de films minces d’oxyde de zinc dopé avec un lanthanide tel que l’europium, le terbium et l’erbium. Le cas d’un film d’oxyde de zinc codopé avec du terbium et de l’europium a également été étudié. Ce mémoire porte également sur la résolution structurale d’un nouveau composé à matrice oxysulfure : Ca4Fe5S4O6 détecté initialement en tant que phase secondaire dans une matrice stœchiométrique CaFeOS. Dans ces deux cas, la microscopie électronique en transmission et ses différentes techniques annexes telles que la tomographie en diffraction, l’imagerie interférentielle et chimique ainsi que les méthodes de spectroscopie ont permis de résoudre les structures cristallines, étudier les arrangements des atomes et les degrés d’oxydation des éléments. Les structures caractérisées ont permis d’expliquer les propriétés de photoluminescence dans le cas des films dopés aux lanthanides et les propriétés magnétiques dans le cas de l’oxysulfure.

Abstract: International audience; Mixed-anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn4Si2O7Cl2. We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon-based connectors from a non-oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H2 evolution and water oxidation. This work then paves the way to a new family of mixed-anion solids

Abstract: International audience; The competition between sintering and coarsening is cited by numerous authors as one of the potential factors for explaining the ultra-rapid sintering kinetics of flash sintering. In particular, surface diffusion is a mechanism decreasing the driving force of sintering by changing the initial highly reactive microstructures (particle contact) into poorly reactive porous skeleton structures (spherical porosity). We show by finite element simulations that flash SPS experiments high specimen temperatures close to 2000 °C. These high temperatures are not sufficient to explain the ultra-rapid sintering kinetics if typical spherical pore theoretical moduli are employed. On the contrary, reactive experimentally determined moduli succeed in explaining the ultra-rapid sintering kinetics. Mesoscale simulations evidenced that the origin of such reactive experimental moduli is a porous skeleton geometry with a significant delay in surface diffusion and particle rearrangement. This highlights the important role of the surface diffusion negation (favoring higher stress intensification factor) in flash sintering.

Abstract: International audience; The complexity of liquid phase sintering of silicon nitride implies the use of advanced gaspressure sintering (GPS) industrial process. Sintering additives have been jointly developed toallow the sintering of this challenging material to reach high mechanical properties. The latterproperties and GPS process of silicon nitride are strongly influenced by the microstructuredevelopment during the thermal treatment under temperature close to 1800°C. In particular,grain growth is a key parameter that needs to be identified. In this work, an experimentaldesign is used to explore microstructural development during the final stage of sintering. Thegrain size, and porosity data are extracted for different holding times and temperatures toallow the identification of the experimental grain growth. The study is extended to the impactof the heating kinetics regime and the influence of the gas pressure furnace environment.

Abstract: This Ph.D. project revolves around the setup of multiple synthesis methods to form the quaternary sulfide compound Ag4MnSb2S6, also known as samsonite. This mineral, to this day, was never synthesized in a laboratory setting. Many “out-of-equilibrium” process methods have been tried out to obtain the compound as a single phase and evaluate its structural and physical properties.Additionally, the crystal structure of the phase is quite complex (space group: P21/n with cell parameters: a = 10.3861 Å, b = 8.1108 Å, c = 6.6637 Å, and Beta= 92.639 °). It is composed of strongly mobile silver atoms (Ag1 and Ag2 – Wyckoff position: 4e) that, however, do not induce ionic conductivity, and antimony atoms (Sb1 – Wyckoff position: 4e) in an AX3E1 configuration, implying the presence of an electron lone pair. Many studies have already been done to show that such a configuration allows for an improvement of the thermoelectric properties thanks to a decrease in the thermal conductivity in the structure. These properties may lead to characteristics of a good candidate for applications in this domain of energy production.This manuscript revolves around concepts such as synthesis (solid-state, molten salt, solvo/hydrothermal, polyol), and powder treatment. An analysis of the structure and microstructure (X-Ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy…). Sintering processes (Spark Plasma Sintering, isostatic pressing, …) have also been experimented on, to obtain a densified powder, a pre-requisite to study transport properties. Said transport properties (electric resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity) are consequently assessed and discussed.; Ces travaux de thèse portent sur la mise en œuvre de plusieurs méthodes de synthèse pour la formation du composé thioantimoniate Ag4MnSb2S6, aussi connu sous le nom de samsonite. Ce composé n’a jamais été synthétisé jusqu’à aujourd’hui via des conditions de laboratoire. De nombreuses voies de synthèse dites « hors équilibre » ont donc été expérimentées afin d’obtenir ce composé monophasé et ainsi de déterminer ses propriétés structurales et de transport.La structure cristalline de la samsonite est complexe, elle cristallise dans une maille monoclinique (groupe d’espace : P21/n) avec comme paramètres de maille : a = 10.3861 Å, b = 8.1108 Å, c = 6.6637 Å, and Bêta = 92.639 °. Cette structure est composée d’atomes d’argent très mobiles (Ag1 et Ag2 – position de Wyckoff : 4e), mais sans que cela ne provoque de conductivité ionique. Les atomes d’antimoine sont quant à eux (Sb1 – position de Wyckoff 4e) en configuration AX3E1, présentant donc un doublet non-liant. Des études ont d’ores et déjà montrés que cette configuration de l’antimoine permet une amélioration des propriétés thermoélectriques grâce notamment à la diminution de la conductivité thermique de réseau. La structure complexe de ce composé, associée au doublet non liant de l’antimoine pourrait donc faire de ce matériau un excellent candidat pour des applications thermoélectriques.Ces travaux de thèse impliquent donc des synthèses (voie solide, sels fondus, solvo/hydro-thermale, et polyol), ainsi que le traitement des poudres ainsi obtenues. Des caractérisations structurales et microstructurales ont été réalisées par diffraction des rayons X et microscopie électronique à balayage. Abstract: International audience; The effects of chemical pressure on the structural and magnetic properties of the triple perovskite Ba3NiSb2O9 are investigated by substituting Sr2+ ions for Ba2+ ions. Two Ba(3-x)SrxNiSb(2)O(9) phases could be stabilized via a solid-state reaction at ambient pressure (AP) in air. The 6H with Sb2O9 pairs (x = 0) -> 6H with NiSbO9 pairs (x = 0.5) -> 3C (cubic with corner-sharing octahedral, x = 1.25) sequence of structural phases occurs with increasing Sr content, i.e., chemical pressure, which is like that previously reported for pure samples of Ba3NiSb2O9 obtained under increasing high physical pressure (HP). For the 6H Ba2.5Sr0.5NiSb2O9 (x = 0.5) phase, using combined Rietveld refinements of powder x-ray and neutron diffraction patterns, precession electron diffraction tomography data collected on thin crystals, aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy mapping, we reach the conclusion that the structure features corner-sharing SbO6 octahedra and NiSbO9 pairs of face-shared octahedra (or Ni-Sb dumbbells) with either a random orientation of the Ni-Sb dumbbells or nanosized chemical correlations for the dumbbell arrangement. As observed in HP Ba3NiSb2O9 produced through synthesis at 9 GPa, AP Ba1.75Sr1.25NiSb2O9 (x = 1.25) crystallizes in a 3C double perovskite A2BB'O6 cubic structure where A, B, and B' sites are occupied by (Ba + Sr), Sb, and (2/3Ni + 1/3Sb) atoms, respectively. The B' sites, which are randomly occupied by spin-1 Ni2+ and diamagnetic Sb5+, form a face-centered-cubic (FCC) sublattice where the Ni2+ amount stays above the site percolation threshold. Weiss temperatures (eta -65 and ti -213 K for Ba2.5Sr0.5NiSb2O9 and Ba1.75Sr1.25NiSb2O9, respectively) indicate that dominant magnetic interactions between Ni2+ spins are antiferromagnetic with magnitudes like those observed in the corresponding HP phases of pure Ba3NiSb2O9. As for the 6H HP Ba3NiSb2O9 compound, in 6H Ba2.5Sr0.5NiSb2O9, muon spin relaxation (mu SR) measurements identify a dynamic magnetic state down to the base temperature (95 mK), consistent with a previously published inelastic neutron scattering study. For 3C Ba1.75Sr1.25NiSb2O9, mu SR and 121Sb nuclear magnetic resonance measurements both indicate the presence of a transition to a static magnetic state below 11(1) K with a significant amount of disorder in this frozen state, in contrast to the spin-liquid state previously suggested for the 3C HP phase of Ba3NiSb2O9. Consistently, a broad maximum is observed in the specific heat at the same temperature. Building on the structural data, the magnetic properties of HP 6H Ba3NiSb2O9 and AP 6H Ba2.5Sr0.5NiSb2O9 are discussed in light of recent works on triangular and J(1) -J(2) honeycomb systems with or without quenched disorder.We are led to the conclusion that the driving force toward a spin-liquid-like state is quenched disorder which needs to be incorporated in J(1) -J(2) honeycomb models. Our evidence of a magnetic transition to a frozen magnetic ground state for the AP Sr-doped 3C phase is in line with models for geometrically frustrated FCC antiferromagnets. This calls for a better experimental and possibly theoretical understanding of the HP 3C phase.

Abstract: International audience; To optimize the performance of an active magnetic regenerative system (AMR), it is important to understand the heat transfer phenomena taking place in the regenerator and the impact of the intrinsic properties of the magnetocaloric material. With this aim in mind, four regenerators involving three different materials (Pr0.65Sr0.35MnO3, La(FeCo)13-xSix, and gadolinium) have been prepared and tested using a permanent magnet based device. This set-up allows studying the performance of different types of regenerators over a wide range of fluidic and magnetic operating conditions. However, since no thermal exchanger is used, this device provides only non-load temperature spans. First, this work deals with an analysis of the performance of the regenerators as a function of their utilization ratio (i.e. working conditions such as the mass flow rate and frequency). Then, an attempt is made to correlate the performance of each regenerator with the physical properties of these different materials.

Abstract: International audience; Fe4Nb2O9 and Co4Nb2O9 are antiferromagnetic compounds belonging to the M4M′2O9 series (M = Mn, Fe, Co; M′ = Nb, Ta), whose structure (P[3 with combining macron]c1) derives from the Cr2O3 corundum one. By mixing cobalt and iron in a 1 : 1 ratio, an Fe2Co2Nb2O9 oxide has been synthesized. Its structural, magnetic and electric characterization studies confirm that its unit cell volume (V = 331.19(1) Å3), Néel temperature (TN = 58 K) and dielectric permittivity are intermediate between those of the Fe4Nb2O9 and Co4Nb2O9 end members. The neutron diffraction study evidences an Fe:Co random occupation of the (4d) Wyckoff sites. Its antiferromagnetic structure, refined in the C2/c′ magnetic space group, shows magnetic moments in the planes of the honeycomb (HC) layers of the M4M′2O9 structure, and stacked along c, as for Fe4Nb2O9 and Co4Nb2O9. However, the magnetic field induced magnetization M(H) of Fe2Co2Nb2O9 below TN differs strongly from both end members, exhibiting a sublinear dependence. A similar rounded shape of the electric polarization P(H) curve is evidenced, in marked contrast to the linear M(H) and P(H) behaviours observed below the spin-flop magnetic field for this class of linear magnetoelectric materials. As a result, Fe2Co2Nb2O9 exhibits larger P values and steeper P responses to H at low H than both Fe4Nb2O9 and Co4Nb2O9 end members. This result is explained by a microscopic model based on the Fe and Co mixed occupation. Substitutional disorder locally allows for stronger magnetoelectric couplings and its effect does not cancel on average. This chemical substitution effect opens a new route to enhance the magnetoelectric response of honeycomb antiferromagnets.

Abstract: International audience; The progress of the melt growth synthesis technique for preparing superconducting REBaCuO bulks allows the production and commercialization of a single crystal with a diameter of 10 cm. This is in good agreement with the development of new applications such as electrical motors where superconducting bulks are used as trapped field magnets or magnetic shields [1], [2]. It is then crucial to determine the superconducting properties such as the critical temperature, critical current density and irreversible magnetic field which is commonly done with the help of an MPMS-SQUID on a millimeter-size sample. However, the inhomogeneity of performances has been reported on a bulk [3], which highlights the necessity to measure the critical properties in multiple positions along the sample radius either in a grain sector or along a grain sector boundary.We propose a similar work with a characterization carried out on a 10 cm wide commercial bulk after machining for use as magnetic shields [1]. 24 rectangular samples have been extracted in a different position from the bulk’s center, prepared and measured on a 14 T MPMS with a VSM head. Then a comparison of the superconducting properties of each sample will be presented along with trapped field measurement done on 10 others wide GdBaCuO bulks. Finally, this will allow a discussion on the readiness of this technology and its possible future development and it will point out the necessity to measure the superconducting properties in different positions.[1]R. Abstract: We develop a mesoscopic model to study the plastic behavior of an amorphous material under cyclic loading. The model is depinning-like and driven by a disordered thresholds dynamics which are coupled by long-range elastic interactions. We propose a simple protocol of "glass preparation" which allows us to mimic thermalisation at high temperature, as well as aging at vanishing temperature. Various levels of glass stabilities (from brittle to ductile) can be achieved by tuning the aging duration. The aged glasses are then immersed into a quenched disorder landscape and serve as initial configurations for various protocols of mechanical loading by shearing. The dependence of the plastic behavior upon monotonous loading is recovered. The behavior under cyclic loading is studied for different ages and system sizes. The size and age dependence of the irreversibility transition is discussed. A thorough characterization of the disorder-landscape is achieved through the analysis of the transition graphs, which describe the plastic deformation pathways under athermal quasi-static shear. In particular, the analysis of the stability ranges of the strongly connected components of the transition graphs reveals the emergence of a phase-separation like process associated with the aging of the glass. Increasing the age and hence stability of the initial glass, results in a gradual break-up of the landscape of dynamically accessible stable states into three distinct regions: one region centered around the initially prepared glass phase, and two additional regions, characterized by well-separated ranges of positive and negative plastic strains, each of which is accessible only from the initial glass phase by passing through the stress peak in the forward, respectively, backward shearing directions., 20 pages, 12 figures, including supplemental material

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the polarization switching mechanisms at play in ferroelectric materials is crucial for their exploitation in electronic devices. The conventional centrosymmetric reference structure-based mechanism which accounts for ferroelectricity in most of the usual displacive ferroelectric materials is too energy-demanding for some newly diagnosed ferroelectric materials such as the Ga2-xFexO3 (0.8 ≤ x ≤ 1.4) compounds. Some alternative theoretical propositions have been made and need experimental confirmation. A dual-scale electron microscopy study is performed on thin films of the Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 multiferroic compound. A wide scale precession-assisted electron diffraction tomography study first allows the determination of the structure the compound adopts in thin films, and even permits the refinement of the atomic positions within this structure. Cationic mobility is suggested for two of the atomic positions through the existence of extra electronic density. A local in situ high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy study then allows confirming these mobilities by directly spotting the cationic displacements on successively acquired images. The whole study confirms an unconventional switching mechanism via local domain wall motion in this compound.

Abstract: International audience; The high thermal and low electrical conductivities of ZnO ceramics have hindered their thermoelectric applications. The doping of ZnO with group 3 elements can enhance the thermoelectric properties. In this work, Al (2 at%) doped ZnO powder was sintered using spark plasma sintering at varying parameters (such as temperature (550-700 ℃), pressure (250-500 MPa) and the temperature of pressure application (Room Temperature (RT) and Holding Time (HT))). Maximum relative density of 98.9% was achieved at a temperature and pressure of 650 • C and 250 MPa, respectively. The Al-doped ZnO ceramics improved in electrical conductivity which caused a decrease in the Seebeck coefficient because of increased carrier concentration. The reduction in the grain size due to inhibiting growth effects of aluminum lead to a decrease in the thermal conductivity through phonon scattering at the grain boundaries. Hence, ZT of 0016 at 500 • C was obtained. This study indicated that Al-doped ZnO ceramics can be sintered at very low temperature of 650 • C. These conditions allow to retain the nanostructure, which is beneficial in improving the thermoelectric properties.
