Abstract: National audience, La métallurgie et plus spécifiquement le secteur du traitement de surface génèrent de grandes quantités d'effluents industriels à base de métaux lourds, notamment de zinc, de nickel et de chrome VI. Les entreprises de ce secteur sont donc contraintes de traiter leurs effluents industriels afin de répondre à l'arrêté du 26 septembre 1985 leur imposant des règles strictes en matière de rejets dans un réseau d'assainissement urbain ou dans le milieu naturel (Cr VI : 0,1mg/L ; Zn et Ni : 5mg/L). Il a été montré que l'ajout de cations métalliques trivalents Al3+ et Fe3+, lors de la précipitation des ions nickel et zinc, permettait d'obtenir des boues sous forme d'hydroxydes doubles lamellaires (HDL) plus stables que les boues classiques et valorisables. Cette étude a pour but de : - optimiser la précipitation de Zn2+ et Ni2+ sous forme d'HDL grâce à l'ajout d'Al3+ ou de Fe 3+, - étudier la stabilité de ces phases en vue de leur valorisation, - évaluer la capacité des phases HDL synthétisées à piéger le chrome VI sous forme d'ions CrO4 2-. Nous avons synthétisé, à l'échelle du laboratoire, les phases HDL de type Zn-Ni-Al – SO4 et Zn-Ni-Fe – SO4, par co-précipitation à pH constant, en faisant varier les paramètres suivants : pH, rapport MII/MIII et concentration des sels. Les composés obtenus ont ensuite été caractérisés grâce à l'analyse chimique, à la diffraction des rayons X et à la spectroscopie infrarouge, ce qui a permis de confirmer l'existence d'une structure de type HDL. Nous avons étudié la stabilité des phases obtenues HDL ainsi que leur capacité à piéger le chrome VI par adsorption. Elles présentent une grande stabilité lorsqu'elles sont mises en solution à des pH supérieurs à 8,5. En revanche, elles ont tendance à se solubiliser lorsqu'on diminue le pH. Les isothermes d'adsorption de chrome VI ont montré que le taux d'échange et l'affinité adsorbat/adsorbant augmentaient avec le ratio MII/MIII. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we report the synthesis, the characterization and the scintillation properties of sol-gel derived Lu2SiO5 (LSO) powders. Ce3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+ doped LSO powders have been synthesized by an original sol-gel process. The purity of the materials has been checked by X-Ray diffraction, confirming the elaboration of monophasic powders even for doped samples. Finally, the scintillation properties of the rare earth doped materials have been studied, the substitution of Ln3+ (Ln: Ce, Eu or Tb) for Lu3+ is confirmed, the scintillation yields have been calculated and the afterglow have also been measured, confirming the potentiality of the sol-gel derived LSO.

Abstract: In this work, we investigated both the use of CO2 supercritical drying conditions and the use of biopolymer to modify the growth and aggregation of inorganic Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) particles. Indeed, one possibility to enhance their performances is to increase the LDH porosity and to design them as nanostructured open structure. Thanks to the combinaison of fast coprecipitation and CO2 supercritical drying, highly porous LDH aerogels were obtained with enhanced textural properties. In parallel, the coprecipitation of Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) in the confined space of alginate beads is reported. In our approach, Alginate acts as a template to support and confined the inorganic precipitation. In one hand, beads made of Alginate are synthesized by complexation of Ca2+ ions and LDH phases are coprecipitated using successive impregnations of reactants. In another hand, Alginate beads are formed directly in presence of the divalent (Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,…) and trivalent metal cations (Al3+), precursors of the inorganic compounds. LDH coprecipitation then occurs during a further impregnation step in a sodium hydroxide solution. All the LDH aerogels and LDH nanocomposites beads are deeply characterized using XRD, SEM/TEM, FTIR spectroscopic, adsorption/desorption of nitrogen and TGA/DTG to get better insight on particle structure, size and morphology Aerogels display enhanced adsorption behavior toward trypsine immobilization whereas a net improvement of the electrochemical response is noticed for the NiAl based bionanocomposites prepared by confined coprecipitation into Alginate., Cette thèse présente un travail sur l’obtention d’aérogels d’HDL par séchage en conditions CO2 supercritique et l’élaboration de nouveaux bionanocomposites formés par la coprécipitation d’hydroxydes doubles lamellaire (HDL) dans l'espace confiné des billes d'alginate. Grâce à la combinaison d’une synthèse par coprécipitation Flash et d’un séchage en conditions supercritiques au CO2, des aérogels d’HDL possédant des surfaces spécifiques élevées sont élaborés. Parallèlement, l’alginate est utilisé comme une matrice de confinement pour la précipitation inorganique d’HDL. D’une part, les billes d'alginate sont synthétisées par complexation des ions Ca2+ et la coprécipitation des phases HDL s’effectue en réalisant des imprégnations successives de réactifs. D’autre part, des billes d'alginate sont formées directement en présence des cations divalents (Mg2+, Ni2++, Co2+, ...) et des cations des métaux trivalents (Al3+), précurseurs des composés inorganiques. La coprécipitation des HDL se produit dans ce cas lors d'une étape d'imprégnation dans une solution d'hydroxyde de sodium. Tous les composés HDL, aérogels ou encore bionanocomposites sont caractérisés en détail par DRX, spectroscopie IR, MEB/MET, adsorption/désorption d’azote et ATG/DTG, pour obtenir un meilleur aperçu de la structure des particules, de leur taille et de leur morphologie. Des études menées sur l’adsorption de la trypsine pour les aérogels ou encore sur les performances d’électrodes modifiées HDL-alginate ont permis de montrer qu’il était possible d'améliorer les performances des HDL en augmenter leur porosité et en élaborant des bionanocomposites.

Abstract: There is accumulating evidence that strontium-containing biomaterials have positive effects on bone tissue repair. We investigated the in vitro effect of a new Sr-doped bioactive glass manufactured by the sol-gel method on osteoblast viability and differentiation. Osteoblasts isolated from foetal mouse calvaria were cultured in the presence of bioactive glass particles; particles were undoped (B75) or Sr-doped with 1 wt.% (B75-Sr1) and 5 wt.% (B75-Sr5). Morphological analysis was carried out by contrast-phase microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cell viability was evaluated by the MTS assay at 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. At 24 h, day 6 and day 12, osteoblast differentiation was evaluated by assaying alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteocalcin (OC) secretion and gene expression of various bone markers, using Real-Time-PCR. Alizarin Red staining and ALP histoenzymatic localisation were performed on day 12. Microscopic observations and MTS showed an absence of cytotoxicity in the three investigated bioactive glasses. B75-Sr5 particles in cell cultures, in comparison with those of B75 and B75-Sr1, resulted in a significant up-regulation of Runx2, Osterix, Dlx5, collagen I, ALP, bone sialoprotein (BSP) and OC mRNA levels on day 12, which was associated with an increase of ALP activity on day 6 and OC secretion on day 12. In conclusion, osteoblast differentiation of foetal mouse calvarial cells was enhanced in the presence of bioactive glass particles containing 5 wt.% strontium. Thus, B75-Sr5 may represent a promising bone-grafting material for bone regeneration procedures.

Abstract: Two photocatalysts based on TiO 2 -pillared intercalated montmorillonite have been prepared by microwave for 10 min at 700 W or by furnace heating at 673 K. Montmorillonite pillaring with TiO 2 increased the basal spacing to 14.7 A (conventional heating) and 17.6 A (microwave heating). XRD patterns of both materials showed the presence of 100% anatase with a slightly higher rate of crystallinity obtained through microwave calcination than by conventional heating at 673 K. The BET specific surface area of the microwave prepared photocatalyst (151 m 2 g − 1 ) was 3 fold higher than those of the Degussa TiO 2 P25. At pH = 5.8, the maximum adsorption capacity of Solophenyl red 3BL (a textile azo dye) on the TiO 2 -pillared montmorillonite calcined by microwave was 185 mg g − 1 , whereas it was 1.4 and 3 fold lower on the TiO 2 -pillared montmorillonite calcined at 673 K, and on the Degussa TiO 2 P25 respectively. The influence of pH on the adsorption of the dye depended on the pH ZPC of the pillared montmorillonites.

Abstract: International audience; Lu1-xEuxBO3 and Lu1-xTbxBO3 powders have been prepared by a sol-gel process with 0 < x < 0.15 for Eu3+ and 0 < x < 0.05 for Tb3+. The purity of powders has been verified by X-Ray diffraction and the results confirm that all the materials have the vaterite type even if the calcination has been performed at 800°C. Furthermore, the solid solution for LuBO3 vaterite is observed up to x=0.15 and x=0.05 for europium and terbium ions respectively. So doping with Eu3+ or Tb3+ ions does not affect the structure. These materials have also been analyzed by Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy. The morphology of the powders has been studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy and shows a very nice morphology with small spherical particles with narrow size distribution. Optical properties have then been studied to confirm the effective substitution of Eu3+ or Tb3+ for Lu3+ ions and to determine the materials scintillation performances. The optima, in term of scintillation yield, are obtained for Eu3+ and Tb3+ concentration of x=0.05 in both cases. The afterglows have also been measured and confirm the potentiality of these materials as scintillators.

Abstract: In this paper, the synthesis, the characterization and the scintillation properties of LuPO4 doped, with several concentrations of Ce3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions, are presented. These materials have been synthesized by sol-gel process. The purity of powders has been verified by X-Ray diffraction and the results confirm the xenotime structure of all the materials. A thermogravimetric analysis allows the obtention of informations on the crystallisation of LuPO4 and the study of its evolution from the amorphous to crystalline form. The morphology of the powders has been studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy and shows that the powders are constituted of small particles with narrow size distribution. Optical properties have been studied in order to determine the scintillation performances of these materials. The optima are obtained for Ce3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+ concentration of respectively 0.1%, 10% and 5% with high scintillation yields. This study thus confirms the potentialities of these materials as scintillators.

Abstract: International audience; VO2 has been intensively studied as a model system for metal‐insulator transition (MIT), ever since its phase switching behavior at relatively low temperature (Tc = 68 °C) was discovered. Its thermo‐active characteristics have been studied for applications in thermal solar collectors to prevent overheating of the fluid absorber, smart windows, and smart tiles to optimize thermal comfort in buildings. In the last few decades, strong efforts were made to develop protocols to process VO2‐based material into thin films, coatings, porous layers, and glazings in order to provide thermo‐active properties to common substrates. A selection of complementary works in both the synthesis of VO2 nanoparticles and formulation of VO2‐polymer nanocomposites is proposed in the present review. The perspective of this work is to provide an easy entry to the thermochromic nanocomposite research field as a tutorial to tackle future challenges such as improving the application‐oriented properties, in particular transition temperature Tc and solar transmittance modulation ΔTsol. Synthesis techniques to fabricate VO2 particles and nanoparticles and strategies to insert VO2 particles in a polymer matrix are presented.

Abstract: Laser heating of individual cells in culture recently led to seminal studies in cell poration, fusion, migration, or nanosurgery, although measuring the local temperature increase in such experiments remains a challenge. Here, the laser-induced dynamical control of the heat-shock response is demonstrated at the single cell level, enabled by the use of light-absorbing gold nanoparticles as nanosources of heat and a temperature mapping technique based on quadriwave lateral shearing interferometry (QLSI) measurements. As it is label-free, this approach does not suffer from artifacts inherent to previously reported fluorescence-based temperature-mapping techniques and enables the use of any standard fluorescent labels to monitor in parallel the cell's response.

Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitational-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually-unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically-polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy-densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to $\Omega^T_0 < 5.6 \times 10^{-8}$, $\Omega^V_0 < 6.4\times 10^{-8}$, and $\Omega^S_0 < 1.1\times 10^{-7}$ at a reference frequency $f_0 = 25$ Hz., Comment: Minor updates to match published version

Abstract: International audience; Solid carbon is deposited on the surfaces of an inductively coupled plasma torch operating with a Titan like atmosphere plasma gas. The frame of the initial research is the study of the radiative properties of plasma encountered around a spacecraft during its hypersonic entry in upper layers of planetary atmosphere. Deposition of carbon is observed not only on the quartz tube outside the inductor but also on the ceramic protection of the torch injector. Carbon exhibits two types of morphology more or less dense and it is analyzed by various analytic devices as MEB, SEM, TEM, EDS and Raman spectroscopy. The gathered carbon powder shows the presence of nanostructured particles.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, two layered double hydroxides, Zn2Cr-ABTS and Zn2Al-Fe(CN)6 LDH, have been synthesized and characterized by X ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy to confirm the intercalation of redox anions between inorganic layers. These redox active hybrid materials have been used to electrically connect laccase (Lac) and glucose oxidase (GOx) in biofuel cell devices. Co-immobilization of hybrid LDH and enzymes has been performed by entrapment in electropolymerized films of polypyrrole deposited on porous carbon tubular electrodes. Lac/Zn2Cr-ABTS cathodic electrode allows the electro-enzymatic reduction of O2, whereas the anodic electrode GOx/Zn2Al-FeIII(CN)6was used for the electro-enzymatic oxidation of glucose. With a two compartment configuration, a maximum power density of 45 μW cm−2was obtained at 0.2 V.

Abstract: International audience; CaTiO3:Pr^3^+ is a phosphor of great interest for electroluminescence application owing to its intense red emission characterized by CIE coordinates very close to those of the NSTC ''ideal red''. In this paper, thin films of CaTiO3:Pr^3^+ are deposited by radiofrequency sputtering technique in pure argon and post-treated by Rapid Thermal Annealing (RTA). The influence of the deposition pressure (0.125-4.5Pa) and annealing conditions on the optical and electrical properties of the thin films is investigated. The chemical composition of the as-deposited films, checked by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS), is close to that of the ceramic target used for the deposition. The crystal structure is confirmed to be orthorhombic by X-ray diffraction. We highlight an improvement of the optical and electrical properties of the films after RTA treatment. Moreover, a net gain is obtained by comparison with conventional thermal treatment procedures in classical furnaces, especially for the reduction of electrical defect densities.

Abstract: Several new synthesis methods of fluorinated carbon nanofibres, such as controlled fluorination using fluorinating agent (TbF4 or XeF 2), or assisted fluorination under UV and gamma irradiation, are reviewed and compared with the direct fluorination using undiluted fluorine gas. The results highlight the different fluorinationmechanisms for the direct fluorination and the new methods. The other advantage of those alternative fluorination routes is the possibility to provide fine tuning of the fluorination level, i.e. from F/C atomic ratio close to zero, as a functionalization, to the unity (CF1) according to the required application, electrochemical or tribological. Two applications are described in this paper as a function of the fluorine content: protection against ozonation and use as solid lubricants. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used as coating biomaterial for prosthesis metal parts and as bone substitute. The release of HA particles induces an inflammatory response and, if uncontrolled, could result in implant loss. At the inflamed site, the polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) represent the earliest phagocytic cells that predominate the cellular infiltrate. We have recently proposed that HA wear debris activate polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) initiating and/or amplifying thereby the acute inflammatory response. Previous studies have shown that activation of monocytes by HA could be modulated by supplementing this latter with the divalent cation, Zinc. The purpose of this work was to investigate the modulation of PMNs activation following exposure to zinc-substituted HA. Our study demonstrate that addition of zinc to HA particles resulted in decreased levels of the pro-inflammatory mediator interleukin-8 (IL-8) and the matrix metallo-proteinase-9. We also show that these changes involve IL-8 receptors (CXCR-1 and CXCR-2).

Abstract: (91)Zr solid-state NMR spectra of zirconium halides and several fluorozirconates have been obtained at high magnetic fields up to 30 T using both the Hahn-Echo and the Quadrupolar Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill sequences combined with the broadband Variable Offset Cumulative Spectrum technique. For the zirconium halides, the (91)Zr isotropic chemical shift covers a range of about 2000 ppm and shows a good correlation with Pauling's electronegativity and ionic potential of the halogen. For the fluorozirconate samples, in which the Zr atoms exhibit various coordination polyhedra, increasing the Zr coordination number and the mean Zr-F bond length leads to an increased isotropic shielding. In the studied compounds the (91)Zr quadrupolar coupling constants (C(Q)'s) range from 10.6 to 44.7 MHz. For 6-fold coordinated Zr sites, a correlation between C(Q) and the shear strain of the octahedron is observed, and we investigate the relationship between the C(Q) and the distortion of the polyhedron for 8-fold coordinated Zr sites using different distortion criteria.

Abstract: International audience; The electrochemical reduction of molten Li–Na–K carbonates at the eutectic composition was (43.5/31.5/25 mol%) performed in the range 450–700 °C. The analysis of the electrochemical mechanism was done by cyclic voltammetry with an inert vitreous carbon electrode. “Quasi-spherical” carbonaceous particles were obtained with average diameter comprised between 30 and 50 nm. The specific surface area as well as the crystallinity and morphology of the powders were strongly influenced by the operating conditions, i.e. potential deposition, temperature of the molten carbonates, temperature of the drying process after washing. The carbon prepared in our experimental conditions contains micro-, meso- and macroporisty. The proportion of each one is strongly dependent on the operating deposition conditions. The highest specific surface area value (1315 m2 g−1) was obtained with carbon powder deposited at 450 °C for an applied potential of −6 V and dried at 600 °C under vacuum after washing.

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used as a bone substitute or coating biomaterial in bone diseases or prosthesis metal parts. The release of HA particles induces an inflammatory response and, if uncontrolled, could result in implant loss. Among the hallmarks of such inflammatory response is early recruitment of the polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs). The purpose of this work is to investigate the response of PMNs following exposure to HA in terms of secreted mediators. Our study shows that HA particles increase the release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-1alpha, as well as chemotactic factors such as interleukin-8, macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha and macrophage inflammatory protein-1beta. HA also induces an increase in matrix metalloproteinase 9 expression. Taken together, our data demonstrate for the first time that HA is capable of activating PMNs, a phenomenon that could potentially contribute to the onset of implant-associated inflammation.

Abstract: This work is concerned with the study of the tribological properties of fluorinated carbon nanofibres with various fluorination rates. The tribological tests, carried out in the presence of pentane and in air after liquid’s evaporation demonstrate good friction properties for all the compounds (the friction coefficients ranging between 0.04 and 0.06 in the presence of pentane and between 0.07 and 0.09 in air). Raman analyses reveal that the friction process induces a partial deterioration of the carbon fibres and SEM studies show that the tribofilm is composed of individual fibres embedded in a more disordered carbonaceous matrix. The fibrous nature of the tribofilm and the experimental relationship between friction coefficient and fluorination rate strongly support that friction properties of fluorinated carbon nanofibres are governed by surface fibres interaction. The modification of the nanofibres surface tension by action of pentane or optimum fluorination rate leads to a lowering of interfibres interactions resulting in an improvement of the friction properties.

Abstract: International audience; The degradation of the pesticide metsulfuron methyl was studied in aqueous solutions by using decatungstate anion, W10O324−, as a photocatalyst. An electron transfer process involving the highly oxidizing features of the decatungstate excited state, namely W10O324−*, was clearly observed. The degradation led to the oxidation of the pollutant and the formation of the decatungstate reduced species, i.e. W10O325−. In aerated as well as in oxygen-saturated solutions, the system was found to operate in a photocatalytic way with the formation of superoxide anion and the regeneration of the starting decatungstate species. The phototransformation of the pesticide metsulfuron methyl appeared to occur through three different reaction pathways involving the three main parts of the chemical structure: the aromatic ring, the sulfonylurea bridge and to a less extent the methoxy group of the triazine moiety. Under continuous excitation a partial mineralization of metsulfuron methyl was observed owing to the presence of the triazine structure. A mechanistic scheme for complete degradation of metsulfuron methyl is proposed.

Abstract: International audience; Bioactive glasses are known to quickly induce the formation of a calcium phosphate layer at their surface when in contact with biological fluids; this property is particularly interesting for clinical applications. Because the bioactivity process deeply depends on the glass composition and texture, and because little has been attempted in quantifying the reaction kinetics of these materials, we developed an unconventional methodology to highlight the influence of the phosphorus oxide content on the physicochemical properties of bioactive glasses. Sol-gel derived glasses in the SiO2-CaO and SiO2-CaO-P2O5 systems were soaked in biological fluids for varying periods. After immersion, the surface changes were characterized using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) associated to Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), which are efficient techniques for multielemental analysis. In addition, these ion beam methods permit accurate trace elements quantification. Chemical mapping of the glass/biological fluids interface at a micrometer scale reveals the bone-bonding ability of our materials. The formation of a Ca-P-Mg layer occurs after a few hours of interaction. The kinetics of the evolution of the calcium phosphate layer is estimated by modeling the Ca/P atomic ratio decrease at the glass surface, along with supersaturation studies in biological fluids. The materials composition and texture significantly affect the kinetics and amplitude of the bioactivity mechanism. Dealkalinization of the glass matrix and the first appearance of the calcium phosphate layer are delayed for SiO2-CaO-P2O5 glasses when compared to SiO2-CaO glass. evertheless, once the Ca-P-Mg layer formation has begun, the layer extends on greater depths and is more quickly changed into a bone-like apatitic phase for P-containing glasses. The presence of phosphorus in the primary glass matrix facilitates the transformation of the initially amorphous calcium phosphates into bone-like apatite crystals. Moreover greater quantities of magnesium are incorporated for SiO2-CaO-P2O5 glasses: this is important information for medical applications due to Mg bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract: The copper complex [Cu(C23H27Br2N4O2)(H2O)(NO3)]2 was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic system with space group P-1, lattice parameters: a = 13.2293(18) (A), b = 14.184(20) (A), c = 16.522(23) (A), α = 91.923(2)°, β = 111.777(2)°, γ = 111.259(2)°, V = 2632.0(6) A3, Z = 4, D c = 0.88 Mg m−3. In the title compound [Cu(C23H27Br2N4O2)(H2O)(NO3)]2, the coordination polyhedron of the Cu atom is a square-planar environment. The structure consists of mononuclear units in which the copper(II) ions are linked in the plane by N, N′ iminato and O, O′ phenoxo atoms. In addition the crystal lattice contains one water molecule per unit. Abstract: Several examples of sol–gel preparation of doped materials are taken to illustrate the various situations where the doping elements are responsible for the main function of the material or govern its structure. Other examples are used to illustrate that sometimes unexpected effects can be observed like structural modification and the appearance of new properties. Rare earth doped scintillators demonstrate higher homogeneity for materials prepared via sol–gel chemistry when compared with classical solid state reaction. The XRD study of rare earth doped orthoborates shows that doping can affect the vaterite to calcite phase transition observed in these compounds. A Raman spectroscopic study has been performed on doped silica xerogels and it has been shown that doping ions can modify greatly the densification process in these amorphous materials. Finally, it has been evidenced that sol–gel chemistry allows the preparation of bioactive ceramics with enhanced properties. In particular Zn-doped HAP with anti inflammatory properties has been prepared and Sr-doped bioactive glasses have demonstrated superior in-vitro bioactivity as evidenced by PIXE-RBS study.

Abstract: Isothermal crystallization of a high molecular weight PEO (Mw=4,000,000) has been investigated using photoDSC. Combining light irradiation, heating and DSC analysis, photoDSC demonstrates good capability to follow the in situ photo- and thermo-ageing of semi-crystalline polymers. Isothermal crystallization of PEO was performed at 55 degrees C. After ageing at different temperatures ranging from 0 to 90 degrees C and for various periods of time, the kinetics of this crystallization was found following the Avrami theory. Avrami exponent, n, was found between 0.9 and 1.4 evidencing a one-dimension growth process. It was also found that the isothermal crystallization rate (i.e. reciprocal crystallization half-time) was exposure time, ageing temperature and light intensity dependent which makes this kinetic parameter a good indicator of following and comparing the degradation of the semi-crystalline polymers.

Abstract: International audience; A promising way of fabricating integrated optics components is based on the sol-gel synthesis and photocuring of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. However, the main factor limiting the development of passive devices is the propagation losses. Moreover, the possibility to compensate these attenuations by optical amplification is competed with the multiphonon relaxation associated to the presence of OH groups. To our knowledge, OH groups were always shown as the main responsible for attenuation at the telecommunication wavelengths, namely at 1310 and 1550 nm, although the matrix is composed of organic species which can contribute to absorptions in this spectral range. This paper deals with spectroscopic and optical characterizations of a well established organic and inorganic hybrid material in order to determine the contribution of each molecular groups to the attenuation at the aforementioned wavelengths.

A material of nominal composition C36WF6 has been obtained and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Intercalation between pseudo-graphitic layers has been evidenced, leading to a staging phenomenon at the nanometer scale. A structural model is proposed and the intercalation chemistry of multiwalled carbon nanotubes is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Zinc oxide (ZnO) was deposited by sputtering on silicon substrates. The structure and the composition of these deposits were studied by X-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, respectively. It was found that the thin films are polycrystalline with an hexagonal wurtzite structure and have a crystallographic c-axis orientation perpendicular to the substrate surface. When the thickness of the coatings increases from 50 to 600 nm, the grain size and the density increase whereas the O/Zn atomic ratio decreases. Then ZnO coatings were deposited on bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) films in order to protect this polymer against the solar ultraviolet (UV) radiations. Samples were irradiated in artificial accelerated conditions with a polychromatic light (lambda>300 nm). The rate of photodegradation was evaluated by infrared and UV–visible spectroscopies. ZnO coatings decrease the rate of oxidation and the rate of photo-yellowing of PC. The efficiency of the ceramic coating depends on its thickness and its structural properties. As a conclusion, ZnO coatings can improve the long-term behaviour of PC for outdoor applications.

Abstract: The reactivity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with some inorganic fluorides (BF 3 , TiF 4 , NbF 5 and WF 6 ) has been studied. The accommodation of the fluorinated species into the carbon lattice has been shown to result from intercalation and adsorption/condensation phenomena. Charge transfer, induced by such a chemical doping, has been clearly evidenced by 19 F NMR and ESR spectroscopy. The doped materials exhibit insulating properties. Due to a restriction in size of the intercalated domains, the opportunity of achievement of a homogeneous doping level and of resulting isotropic 1D transport properties in chemically modified carbon nanotubes is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; : In this study, the direct translocation of cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) into large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) was shown to be rapid for all the most commonly used CPPs. This translocation led within a few minutes to intravesicular accumulation up to 0.5 mM, with no need for a transbilayer potential. The accumulation of CPPs inside LUVs was found to depend on CPP sequence, CPP extravesicular concentration and phospholipid (PL) composition, either in binary or ternary mixtures of PLs. More interestingly, the role of anionic phospholipid flip-flopping in the translocation process was ascertained. CPPs enhanced the flipping of PLs, and the intravesicular CPP accumulation directly correlated with the amount of anionic PLs that had been transferred from the external to the internal leaflet of the LUV bilayer, thus demonstrating the transport of peptide/lipid complexes as inverted micelles.

Abstract: Two synthesis ways were applied to fluorination of a novel nano-sized graphitized carbon black: (i) direct fluorination (under a flux of pure molecular fluorine) and (ii) controlled fluorination by TbF4 thermal decomposition. The thermal, electrochemical and tribologic properties of the various fluorinated nanocarbons obtained have been investigated. Fluorinated compounds produced by means of controlled fluorination present higher thermal stability and better tribologic properties than those obtained using direct fluorination. On the other hand, the study of the electrochemical performances as electrode material in primary lithium battery underlines that the direct fluorination is more efficient than the controlled way taking into account the energy and power densities. Each fluorination way leads to specific mechanisms of covalent grafting of fluorine atoms onto nanocarbons. These mechanisms have been studied by deep physical–chemical characterizations by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with 13C and 19F nuclei in order to determine the C F bond nature, the structure and textural properties of the fluorocarbon compounds.

Abstract: This work is devoted to the synthesis of NiAl-CO32- Layered Double Hydroxide phases (LDH) with controlled morphology and to the study of the relationship between the structural / microstructural and electrochemical properties. The LDH phases are prepared by a new synthetic method, based on the hydrothermal synthesis in presence of amino acids. We have highlighted the influence of various synthetic parameters such as the amount of amino acid, the concentration of metal salts, the pH of the medium, the temperature and time of hydrothermal treatment as well as the amino acid nature. Three phases of different degrees of crystallinity and different morphologies, representative of synthesized samples were particularly studied. Their structures and microstructures were determined by Rietveld refinement using high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. These XRD results combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations indicate that the broadening of 00l diffraction lines is mainly due to size effects, while both size and micro-strain effects contribute to the anisotropic broadening of the other hkl reflections. The micro-strain are attributed to an interstratification phenomena (CO32-/SO42-) and intergrowth between rhombohedral 3R1 and hexagonal 2H1 polytypes, confirmed and quantified using the software DIFFaX. The electrochemical properties of these phases are also studied by cyclic voltammetry showing that the presence of the 2H1 stacking motifs results in a net increase of the electrochemical signal., Ce travail est consacré à la synthèse de phases d’Hydroxydes Doubles Lamellaire (HDL) [NiAl-CO32-] à morphologies contrôlées et à l’étude de la relation entre leurs propriétés structurales / microstructurales et leurs propriétés électrochimiques. Les phases HDL sont préparées par un nouveau procédé de synthèse, basé sur un traitement hydrothermal en présence d’acides aminés. Nous avons mis en évidence l’influence de plusieurs paramètres de synthèse tels que la quantité d’acide aminé, la concentration de sels métalliques, le pH du milieu ainsi que la température et le temps du traitement hydrothermal ou encore la nature de l’acide aminé. Trois phases présentant différents degrés de cristallinité et différentes morphologies et représentatives des échantillons synthétisés, ont été plus particulièrement étudiées. Leur structure et microstructure ont été déterminées par affinement Rietveld en utilisant des données de diffraction des rayons X à haute résolution enregistrées au synchrotron. Ces résultats de DRX combinés avec les observations en microscopie électronique à transmission (MET) indiquent que l'élargissement des raies de diffraction 00l est principalement dû à des effets de taille, tandis que les effets, à la fois de taille et de micro-contrainte contribuent à l’élargissement anisotrope des autres réflexions hkl. Les micro-contraintes sont attribuées à un phénomène d’interstratification (CO32-/SO42-) et d’intercroissance de deux polytypes 2H1 et 3R1, confirmés et quantifiés à l’aide du logiciel DIFFaX. L’étude des propriétés électrochimiques de ces phases par voltammétrie cyclique a permis de montrer que la présence du motif d’empilement 2H1 induit une nette augmentation du signal électrochimique.

Abstract: International audience; Les PCB sont des polluants persistants pour lesquels il faut encore chercher des solutions permettant de les retirer des sédiments. Le lavage par des tensioactifs offre de bons rendements de nettoyage. Il faut ensuite traiter les eaux du lessivage. Les Hydroxydes Doubles Lamellaires (HDL) ont montré des capacités intéressantes pour l'adsorption de polluants. L'insertion de tensioactifs lors de la synthèse de ces matériaux permet d'intercaler des polluants hydrophobes entre les feuillets brucitiques de ces argiles anioniques. Cette étude a pour objectif de tester la capacité de HDL à piéger un membre de la famille des PCB, le 4-chlorobiphényle (PCB 3). Les matériaux utilisés, à deux variantes du rapport MII/MIII, sont composés de zinc (Zn) et d'aluminium (Al) et intercalés avec du dodécylsulfate de sodium ou du dodécylbenzènesulfonate de sodium dès leur synthèse, ou encore des phases ZnAl-Chlore, mises en contact avec de l'acide humique après leur synthèse. Les HDL modifiés avec du tensioactifs montrent une forte capacité à la rétention du PCB 3, de l'ordre de 97% adsorbés, ainsi que les phases précipitées en présence du polluant. Les HDL sur lesquels est adsorbé l'acide humique montrent une capacité de dépollution de l'effluent bien inférieure, avec un maximum de 50% de PCB 3 adsorbés.

Abstract: International audience; Neutron powder diffraction has been performed on the MTbF6 fluorides (M=Cd, Ca, Sr, (α/β)-Ba). Four of these fluorides (Cd, Ca, Sr, β-Ba) are built of a (pseudo-) tetragonal packing of [TbF6]2− chains and only differs by the chains relative orientations. Thus this series represents a valuable opportunity to evaluate the Tb4+-Tb4+ magnetic interactions. All the compounds displayed antiferromagnetic order (TN=2.70 K (Cd), 2.15 K (Ca), 2.60 K (Sr), 2.10 K (β-Ba)), except for the α form of BaTbF6. The crystal structure of this latter fluoroterbate has also been investigated by means of high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. From Neutron Powder Diffraction data, CdTbF6 and β-BaTbF6 magnetic structures were determined, together with the metamagnetic behaviour of β-BaTbF6 as a function of an external magnetic field. A tentative phase diagram is then given for β-BaTbF6. Advantage was taken of the polymorphism of the BaTbF6 fluoroterbate to analyse, on the basis of topological parameters such as bond distances and angles, the magnetic behaviour of its α and β forms. It was shown that superexchange interactions are present in β-BaTbF6, and that these interactions may also rule the magnetic behaviour of the other MTbF6 (M=Ca, Sr, Cd) tetravalent terbium fluorides.

Abstract: To address some issues to premature wear caused by high pressures and temperatures used on aircraft parts, nanolubricants made of fluorinated nanocarbons were synthesized. They are known for their low friction coefficients and high thermal stability in air. To improve these properties, carbonaceous nanomaterial precursors with different dimensionalities, and various gaz-solid synthesis methods were investigated. Thus, a closed structure such as carbon nanofibres (1D, tubular), opened such as carbon nanodiscs/nanocones (2D in majority, discotic) and intermediate with graphitized carbon blacks(0D, spherical) were fluorinated, firstly with molecular fluorine gas, and secondly with atomic fluorine released by the thermal decomposition of a solid fluorinating agent. Mechanisms of fluorination/defluorination were proposed thanks to complementary characterization techniques (solid NMR, SEM, TEM, AFM, XRD) for all the studied compounds. Materials with a gain of thermal stability of several tens of degrees compared to fluorinated materials of the litterature were prepared, and a new synthesis way called “flash fluorination” has been developed to further expand the thermal stability in air. Good tribological properties of these materials have been also demonstrated, including high temperature (160°C) regardless of the fluorination method. Then, polysiloxane resins loaded with fluorinated carbon nanofibres were formulated. The composite coatings exhibit thermal stability above 400°C as demonstrated by the study of the degradation mechanism as a function of the temperature, in particular by coupling TGA-FTIR. From a tribological point of view, friction coefficients measured at room temperature and 160°C are below 0.1 and the tribofilms obtained were characterized by SEM and EDX analysis., Pour répondre aux problématiques d’usure précoce des pièces mécaniques causée par des pressions et températures élevées d’utilisation, des nanolubrifiants constitués de nanocarbones fluorés, connus pour leurs faibles coefficients de frottement et haute stabilité thermique ont été synthétisés. Pour améliorer ces propriétés, des précurseurs nanocarbonés de dimensionnalités différentes, et des procédés de synthèse gaz-solide variés ont été employés. Ainsi, une structure fermée comme les nanofibres de carbone NFCs (1D, tubulaire), ouverte comme le mélange nanodisques / nanocônes de carbone NDCs (majoritairement 2D, discotique) et intermédiaire avec les noirs de carbone graphitisés NCGs (0D, sphérique) ont été fluorés, d’une part avec le fluor moléculaire gazeux et d’autre part avec le fluor atomique produit par décomposition thermique d’un agent solide. Les mécanismes de fluoration / défluoration ont été proposés à l’aide de différentes techniques de caractérisation complémentaires (RMN du solide, MEB, MET, AFM, DRX) pour l’ensemble des matrices étudiées. Des matériaux présentant un gain de stabilité thermique de plusieurs dizaines de degrés comparativement aux matériaux fluorés de la littérature ont été élaborés, et une nouvelle méthode de synthèse dite « fluoration flash » a été mise au point pour étendre encore cette tenue en température. Les bonnes propriétés tribologiques de ces matériaux ont également été démontrées, notamment à 160°C et ceci quel que soit le mode de fluoration. Par la suite, des vernis à base de résines siliconées et chargés en nanofibres de carbone fluorées ont été formulés. Le revêtement composite présente une stabilité thermique supérieure à 400°C comme démontré par l’étude de son mécanisme de dégradation en température, notamment par couplage ATG-FTIR. D’un point de vue tribologique, les coefficients de frottement mesurés à température ambiante et 160°C sont inférieurs à 0,1 et les tribofilms obtenus ont été caractérisés par analyse MEB et EDX.

Abstract: International audience; Thermal behaviors of four hybrid layered double hydroxide (LDH) phases have been studied by thermogravimetric analyses coupled with mass spectroscopy, temperature dependence of X-ray powder diffraction measurements, and temperature dependence of infrared spectroscopy measurements. Inorganic zinc-aluminium LDH main layers (with a Zn2+/Al3+ cationic ratio of 2) inserted the following four organic anions: benzene carboxylate, 4-hydroxy-benzene carboxylate, benzene sulfonate and 4-hydroxybenzene sulfonate. The four LDH hybrids have been synthesized by the coprecipitation method. The as-prepared samples have been characterized and their compositions were determined. Thermal evolution of the crystalline phases during the dehydration (occurring before 200 ◦C) and the dehydroxylation (occurring between 200 and 300 ◦C) gave evidence for organic anion grafting onto the inorganic main layer. The thermal stability of the LDH hybrid system depends on the nature of the intercalated aromatic anion. The thermal grafting process can be monitored, as well as its thermal reversibility, by choosing the functionalizations of the benzenic anion and the temperature of the applied heat treatment.

Abstract: International audience; The ability of diamond nanoparticles (nanodiamonds, NDs) to deliver small interfering RNA (siRNA) into Ewing sarcoma cells is investigated with a view to the possibility of in-vivo anticancer nucleic-acid drug delivery. siRNA is adsorbed onto NDs that are coated with cationic polymer. Cell uptake of NDs is demonstrated by taking advantage of the NDs' intrinsic fluorescence from embedded color-center defects. Cell toxicity of these coated NDs is shown to be low. Consistent with the internalization efficacy, a specific inhibition of EWS/Fli-1 gene expression is shown at the mRNA and protein level by the ND-vectorized siRNA in a serum-containing medium.

Abstract: Chemistry in confined conditions is explored at the level of the interlayer space of multiwall carbon nanotubes. Starting from preliminary intercalated tubes, a ligand exchange reaction has been successfully conducted within the former Van der Waals gap, resulting in a final dispersion of heteroatomic particles, around 2 nm large and nearly homogeneous in size, on the outer surface of the tubes. Intercalated tubular carbon architectures thus prove to be interesting templates for a bottom-up preparation of chemically complex supported nanoparticles, with potential activities for versatile applications.

Abstract: One of the AFm phases in hydrated Portland cement is Ca-3(AlxFe2-x)O-6 center dot CaCO3 center dot nH(2)O. It is based on hexagonal and platey structural elements and the interlayer structure incorporates CO32-. The solid phases were experimentally synthesized and characterized by different techniques including X-ray techniques (XRD and EXAFS) and vibrational spectroscopy techniques (IR, Raman). Fe-monocarbonate (Fe-Mc) and Al-monocarbonate (Al-Mc) were found to be stable up to 50 degrees C, while Fe-hemicarbonate (Fe-Hc) was unstable with respect to Fe-Mc in the presence of calcite. Fe-Mc has a rhombohedral R (3) over barc symmetry which is different from the triclinic of the Al analogue. Both XRD and thermodynamic modelling of the liquid compositions indicated that Al-Mc and the Fe-Mc phases do not form solid solution. The solubility products were calculated experimentally at 20 degrees C and 50 degrees C. Under standards condition the solubility products and other thermodynamic parameters were estimated using temperature-solubility product extrapolation and found to be logK(so) (Fe-Mc) = -34.59 +/- 0.50, logK(so) (Fe-Hc) = -30.83 +/- 0.50 and logK(so)(Al-Mc) = -31.32 +/- 0.50. Abstract: This work reports on the pre-development of inorganic electroluminescent devices based on luminescent CaTiO3 :Pr3+ thin films. It includes two parts. The first part is dedicated to the deposition of CaTiO3: Pr3 + films by sputtering of a home-made target and post-treated for their crystallization. Influence of gas pressure during deposition and post-treatment conditions (temperature, oven…) on the morphology, structure, optical and electrical properties of the films was investigated. Finally, the possibility to obtain films crystallized in the orthorhombic phase, photoluminescent, transparent in the whole visible range and with electrical properties needed for the aimed application, was demonstrated. Conditions for further optimization are also given. The second part of the work aims to use the Intervalence Charge Transfer (IVCT) model that has been recently elaborated in the laboratory, as a tool for the design of new Pr3+-doped phosphors that could be integrated in electroluminescent devices. On this basis, the titanates (Ca,Sr)TiO3 :Pr3+, CaTiO3 :Bi3+ ;Pr3+ and Na1/2Ln1/2TiO3 :Pr3+ (Ln = La, Gd, Y, Lu) were prepared and characterized. The detailed analysis of the photoluminescence behaviors confirmed the IVCT model and allowed to propose new models. Further, the role of Bi3+ codopant as a sensitizer of the Pr3+ luminescence in CaTiO3 is demonstrated and interpreted. The red phosphor CaTiO3 :Bi3+ ;Pr3+ appears as a possible interesting candidate for applications in electroluminescence., Ce travail de thèse est une contribution au développement d’afficheurs électroluminescents inorganiques utilisant le luminophore CaTiO3 :Pr3+ comme couche active. Il comporte deux volets. Le premier concerne l’étude du dépôt de CaTiO3 :Pr3+ par pulvérisation cathodique à partir d’une cible céramique élaborée au laboratoire et s’est plus particulièrement attaché à l’influence de la pression de dépôt et aux conditions de recuit (température, type de fours) sur les propriétés morphologiques, structurales, optiques et électriques des films. Les films obtenus sont cristallisés en structure orthorhombique, photoluminescents, transparents sur toute la gamme du visible et possèdent des propriétés électriques compatibles avec l’application visée. Des pistes d’optimisation de ces propriétés sont également avancées. Le second volet du travail utilise le modèle de transfert de charge par intervalence (TCIV) développé ces dernières années au laboratoire, pour orienter la recherche d’autres luminophores dopés par des ions Pr3+ utilisables dans des afficheurs électroluminescents. Sur cette base, des titanates de formulations (Ca,Sr)TiO3 :Pr3+, CaTiO3 :Bi3+ ;Pr3+ et Na1/2Ln1/2TiO3 :Pr3+ (Ln = La, Gd, Y, Lu) ont été synthétisés et caractérisés. L’évaluation détaillée du comportement de ces matériaux en photoluminescence a permis de valider le modèle TCIV, d’initier d’autres modèles et de mettre en évidence l’intérêt d’un codopage au bismuth pour accroître l’intensité de fluorescence de l’ion Pr3+ dans la matrice CaTiO3. Le luminophore rouge CaTiO3 :Bi3+ ; Pr3+ apparaît être un candidat intéressant pour des applications en électroluminescence.
