The increase in oil prices in 1973 made an entire range of expensive oil available, but this new oil still raises considerable technical problems, and its economic competitiveness has been greatly affected by the downturn in the oil market. What is the state of the art of existing technologies ? What remains of the ambitious projects conceived in the 1970s? As of 2000/2010, what will the impact of this new oil be in terms of amounts and from the strategic standpoint? These are the questions that the present study attempts to answer.

La présente étude a pour but d'analyser l'évolution 1972-1982 de la densité des réserves prouvées de pétrole conventionnel du monde occidental et d'approcher quantitativement par grandes zones géographiques les principaux déterminants de cette évolution : nouvelles découvertes et production. Elle repose en particulier sur l'examen et le suivi d'un ensemble comportant près de 500 champs pétroliers. This article analyzes the 1972-1982 evolution of the specific gravity of proven reserves of conventional oil in the Western World by major geographic zones and considers the determinant factors in this evolution, i. e. new discoveries and production. This survey is mainly based on the examination and follow-up of the overall behavior of nearly 500 oil fields.

La présente étude se propose d'analyser différentes méthodes d'estimation du taux de découverte de pétrole, d'en souligner les avantages et insuffisances respectifs et d'examiner comment les découvertes des trois dernières décennies doivent être appréciées. Un développement particulier, basé sur les travaux d'Arrigton, a d'autre part été apporté quant aux problèmes posés par les réévaluations des réserves de champs déjà mis à jour. The present study proposes to analyse the different approaches used in assessing the rate of oil discovery, to highlight the respective advantages and shortcomings and to see how the discoveries made in the last three decades should be evaluated. A specific development, based on Arrigton's studies, has also been made concerning problems raised by the reassessment of the reserves in fields that have already been discovered.

Cette conférence, donnée à l'occasion de la 5th European Petroleum and Gas Conference (Amsterdam, avril 1986), esquisse, de l'exploration à la distribution, les principaux axes de développements futurs de l'industrie pétrolière appliqués au cas européen. L'accent est particulièrement porté sur la réduction des coûts qui demeure l'orientation clef de cette industrie pour les 10 à 15 prochaines années et des gains potentiels que l'on peut en attendre sur les coûts de production du pétrole. This article is the closing address delivered at the 5th European Petroleum and Gas Conference in Amsterdam in April 1986. It outlines the main lines, ranging from exploration to distribution, along which the European oil and gas industry can be expected to develop in the future. Emphasis is placed in particular on the cost reduction, which will be the key preoccupation of this industry in the next 10 or 15 years, as well as on the potential reductions that can be expected in oil production costs.

It has been demonstrated previously that electrons interact differently with chiral molecules depending on their polarization. For enantiomeric pure monolayers of heptahelicene, opposite asymmetries in spin polarization were reported and attributed to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity effect. However, these promising proof-of-concept photoemission experiments lack the angular and energy resolution that could provide the necessary insights into the mechanism of this phenomenon. In order to fill in the missing gaps, we provide a detailed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of heptahelicene layers on a Cu(111) substrate. Throughout the large accessible energy and angle range, no chirality induced spin asymmetry in photoemission could be observed. Possible reasons for the absence of signatures of the spin-dependent electron transmission through the chiral molecular layer are briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
