Abstract

Volume 2, Issue 1, There was significant popular support for eugenics in the first part of the twentieth century. Discourses from various organizations promoting the health of children and families interacted with eugenic discourses and provided support for eugenics to health care providers and the general public. Linking eugenics with better health of the population was an essential aspect of legitimizing eugenics among the general population. The American Journal of Nursing (AJN) provided an avenue for informing nurses about eugenics, gaining their support, and encouraging them to gain support for the movement among their patients and the public. This paper provides an overview of organizations in the US focused on or encompassing the eugenics movement and an analysis of eugenic discourses in AJN. All issues of AJN from 1900–1950 were read for eugenic and related language. These texts then were analyzed for authoritative, moral, rational, and story-telling support for eugenics. Nursing leaders worked closely with eugenic societies and organizations that were designed to improve the health of infants, children, and families. Eugenics was seen as a tool to reduce social and health problems, and eugenic leaders looked to these organizations and nursing to gain broad public support. AJN participated in the work of legitimizing eugenics through various means of legitimation, including appeals to authority, nurses’ moral values, the rationality of science, and moral tales.

Abstract

In this article, we conduct a textual analysis of Edith Wharton's 1911 novel, Ethan Frome. We offer three readings. The first presents Wharton's account of illness through a framework developed four decades later by Talcott Parsons. Wharton's sick role was less medico-centric than Parsons; it emphasized the importance of class, gender and community in defining and legitimizing the sick role. Our second reading explores the socially constructed nature of roles in illness. The sick role as portrayed by Wharton is not the social fact later conceived by Parsons, but a social construct with no determinate reference beyond that which the local community is willing to grant it. Our third reading examines the social context, particularly the power relations, within which this story of illness has been constructed.

Hospital medical staff consolidation is analyzed from 1987 to 1990. The senior hospital administrators at 22 institutions in the middlewestern US were surveyed. Physicians are concerned about their assignments, their relationships with nurses and medical support personnel and a sense of loss over reassignments. Verpleegkundige middenmanagers verkeren in een ideale positie om patiëntgecentreerde zorg te faciliteren. Hun bijdrage is echter onderbelicht inde literatuurd, omdat dit in de praktijk moeilijk te verwoorden is. In dit artikel wordt bestudeerd hoe in ziekenhuizen middenmanagers aan de patiëntgecentreerde zorg bijdragen. Hierbij werd een combinatie gebruikt van analyse van tijdsbesteding an etnografisch werk, om op microniveau de bijdrage van de middenmanagers aan patiëntgecentreerde zorg te bekijken. Zestien managers werden gedurende 560 uur geschaduwd tijden hun werk in vier ziekenhuizen.

Abstract

In clinical practice, identifying positive and negative attitudes toward older patients is very important to improve quality of care provided to them. The Older People in Acute Care Survey – United States (OPACS-US) is an instrument measuring hospital nurses attitudes regarding older patients. However, psychometrics have never been assessed. Furthermore, knowledge being related to attitude and behavior should also be measured complementing the OPACS-US. The purpose of this study was to assess structural validity and reliability of the OPACS-US and assess whether the OPACS-US can be complemented with the Knowledge about Older Patients-Quiz (KOP-Q). A multicenter cross sectional design was conducted. Registered nurses (n = 130, mean age 39,9 years; working experience 14,6 years) working in four general hospitals were included in the study. Nurses completed the OPACS-US section A: practice experiences, B: general opinion and the KOP-Q online. Findings demonstrated that the OPACS-US is a valid and reliable survey instrument that measures practice experiences and general opinion. Furthermore, the OPACS-US can be combined with the KOP-Q adding a knowledge construct, and is ready for use within education and/or quality improvement programs in the USA.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS has been a pressing problem in the East African country of Kenya for over 20 years. Promotion of condom use is one prevention strategy embraced in global health prevention of HIV, but use remains relatively low in Kenya. In order to better understand the socio-historic context of discourses about condoms in Kenya, this study explored how condoms were covered and represented in the Kenyan Daily Nation newspaper from 1989-2003. Qualitative content analysis was conducted for 91 items from the Daily Nation including articles, letters to the editor, columns, opinion and editorial pieces, advertisements, and cartoons. These items were systematically examined for the manner and content of manifest and latent references to condoms. Researchers found four major themes, 'controversy and confusion,' 'we need to do more: condoms might help,' 'not for Kenyans or from Kenyans,' and 'stigmatized associations.' Findings provide needed insight into the socio-cultural context surrounding condoms in Kenya that is often lacking within health promotion and HIV prevention programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
