So far, even the highest resolution galaxy formation simulations with gravitational softening have failed to reproduce realistic life cycles of star clusters. We present the first star-by-star galaxy models of star cluster formation to account for hydrodynamics, star formation, stellar evolution and collisional gravitational interactions between stars and compact remnants using the updated SPHGAL+KETJU code, part of the GRIFFIN-project. Gravitational dynamics in the vicinity of $>3$ M$_\odot$ stars and their remnants are solved with a regularised integrator (KETJU) without gravitational softening. Comparisons of idealised star cluster evolution with SPHGAL+KETJU and direct N-body show broad agreement and the failure of simulations that use gravitational softening. In the hydrodynamical dwarf galaxy simulations run with SPHGAL+KETJU, clusters up to $\sim900$ M$_\odot$ are formed compact (effective radii $0.1-1$ pc) and their sizes increase by up to a factor of ten in agreement with previous N-body simulations and the observed sizes of exposed star clusters. The sizes increase rapidly once the clusters become exposed due to photoionising radiation. On average $63\%$ of the gravitationally bound clusters disrupt during the first $100$ Myr of evolution in the galactic tidal field. The addition of collisional dynamics reduces the fraction of supernovae in bound clusters by a factor of $\sim 2.6$, however the global star formation and outflow histories change by less than $30\%$. Observed low-mass galaxies with nuclear star clusters (NSCs) can host accreting massive black holes (MBH). We present simulations of dwarf galaxies ($M_{\mathrm{baryon}} \sim 0.6 - 2.4 \times 10^8 \rm \, M_\odot$) at solar mass resolution ($0.5\rm \, M_\odot < m_{\mathrm{gas}} < 4 \rm \, M_\odot$) with a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) and investigate the impact of NSCs on MBH growth and nuclear star formation (SF). The Griffin simulation model includes non-equilibrium low temperature cooling, chemistry and the effect of HII regions and supernovae (SN) from massive stars. Individual stars are sampled down to 0.08 $\rm M_\odot$ and their non-softened gravitational interactions with MBHs are computed with the regularised Ketju integrator. MBHs with masses in the range of $10^2 - 10^5 \, \rm M_\odot$ are represented by accreting sink particles without feedback. We find that the presence of NSCs boost nuclear SF (i.e. NSC growth) and MBH accretion by funneling gas to the central few parsecs. Low-mass MBHs grow more rapidly on $\sim 600$ Myr timescales, exceeding their Eddington rates at peak accretion. MBH accretion and nuclear SF is episodic (i.e. leads to multiple stellar generations), coeval and regulated by SN explosions. On 40 - 60 Myr timescales the first SN of each episode terminates MBH accretion and nuclear SF. Without NSCs, low-mass MBHs do not grow and MBH accretion and reduced nuclear SF become irregular and uncorrelated. We present an analysis of the cold gas phase in a low metallicity starburst generated in a high-resolution hydrodynamical simulation of a gas-rich dwarf galaxy merger as part of the GRIFFIN project. The simulations resolve (4 M$_\odot$ gas phase mass resolution, $\sim$ 0.1 pc spatial resolution) the multi-phase interstellar medium with a non-equilibrium chemical heating/cooling network at temperatures below $10^4$ K. Massive stars are sampled individually and interact with the ISM through the formation of HII regions and supernova explosions. In the extended starburst phase, the ISM is dominated by cold ($T_\mathrm{gas} < 300$ K) filamentary clouds with self-similar internal structures. The clouds have masses of $10^{2.6}$ - $10^{5.6}$ M$_\odot$ with a power law mass function, $dN/dM \propto M^\alpha$ with $\alpha = -1.78 (\pm 0.08)$. They also follow the Larson relations, in good agreement with observations. We trace the lifecycle of the cold clouds and find that they follow an exponential lifetime distribution and an e-folding time of $\sim$ 3.5 Myr. Clouds with peak masses below $10^4$ M$_\odot$ follow a power law relation with their average lifetime $\tau_\mathrm{life} \propto M^{0.3}_\mathrm{max}$ which flattens out for higher cloud masses at $ < 10$ Myr. A similar relation exists between cloud size at peak mass and lifetime. The collective properties of star clusters are investigated using a simulation of the collision between two dwarf galaxies. The characteristic power law of the cluster mass function, N(M), with a logarithmic slope d\log N/d\log M ~ -1, is present from cluster birth and remains throughout the simulation. The maximum mass of a young cluster scales with the star formation rate (SFR). The relative average minimum separation, R(M)= N(M)^{1/p}D_min(M)/D(M_low), for average minimum distance D_min(M) between clusters of mass M, and for lowest mass, M_low, measured in projection (p=2) or three dimensions (p=3), has a negative slope, d log R/d log M ~ -0.2, for all masses and ages. This agrees with observations of R(M) in low-mass galaxies studied previously. Like the slope of N(M), R(M) is apparently a property of cluster birth for dwarf galaxies that does not depend on SFR or time. The negative slope for R(M) implies that massive clusters are more concentrated relative to lower mass clusters throughout the entire mass range. Cluster growth through coalescence is also investigated. The ratio of the kinetic to potential energy of all near-neighbor clusters is generally large, but a tail of low values in the distribution of this ratio suggests that a fraction of the clusters merge, ~8% by number throughout the ~300 Myr of the simulation and up to 60% by mass for young clusters in their first 10 Myr, scaling with the SFR above a certain threshold., Comment: 7 pages, 13 figures, accepted by The Open Journal of Astrophysics

Observations and high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations indicate that massive star clusters assemble hierarchically from sub-clusters with a universal power-law cluster mass function. We study the consequences of such assembly for the formation of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) at low metallicities ($Z=0.01\;Z_\mathrm{\odot}$) with our updated N-body code BIFROST based on the hierarchical fourth-order forward integrator. BIFROST integrates few-body systems using secular and regularized techniques including post-Newtonian equations of motion up to order PN3.5 and gravitational-wave recoil kicks for BHs. Single stellar evolution is treated using the fast population synthesis code SEVN. We evolve three cluster assembly regions with $N_\mathrm{tot} = 1.70$--$2.35 \times 10^6$ stars following a realistic IMF in $\sim$1000 sub-clusters for $t=50$ Myr. IMBHs with masses up to $m_\bullet \sim 2200\:M_\mathrm{\odot}$ form rapidly mainly via the collapse of very massive stars (VMSs) assembled through repeated collisions of massive stars followed by growth through tidal disruption events and BH mergers. No IMBHs originate from the stars in the initially most massive clusters. We explain this by suppression of hard massive star binary formation at high velocity dispersions and the competition between core collapse and massive star life-times. Later the IMBHs form subsystems resulting in gravitational-wave BH-BH, IMBH-BH and IMBH-IMBH mergers with a $m_\bullet\sim1000\:M_\mathrm{\odot}$ gravitational-wave detection being the observable prediction. Stellar winds of massive ($\gtrsim9\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) and very massive ($\gtrsim100\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) stars may play an important role in the metal-enrichment during the formation of star clusters. With novel high-resolution hydrodynamical \textsc{griffin}-project simulations, we investigate the rapid recycling of stellar wind-material during the formation of massive star clusters up to $M_\mathrm{cluster}\sim2\times10^5\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ in a low-metallicity dwarf galaxy starburst. The simulation realises new stars from a stellar initial mass function (IMF) between $0.08\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ and $\sim400\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ and follows stellar winds, radiation and supernova-feedback of single massive stars with evolution tracks. Star clusters form on timescales less than $\sim5$ Myr, and their supernova-material is very inefficiently recycled. Stellar wind-material, however, is trapped in massive clusters resulting in the formation of stars self-enriched in Na, Al, and N within only a few Myr. Wind-enriched (second population) stars can be centrally concentrated in the most massive clusters ($\gtrsim10^4\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) and the locked wind-material increases approximately as $M_\mathrm{cluster}^{2}$. These trends resemble the characteristics of observed second population stars in globular clusters. We fit scaling relations to the log-normal distributed wind-mass fractions and extrapolate to possible globular cluster progenitors of $M_\mathrm{cluster}=10^7\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ to investigate whether a dominant second population could form. This can only happen if the IMF is well sampled, single massive stars produce at least a factor of a few more enriched winds e.g. through a top-heavy IMF, and a significant fraction of the first population (unenriched) stars is lost during cluster evolution., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures, updated to match the version accepted for publication in MNRAS

Star formation in galaxies is regulated by turbulence, outflows, gas heating and cloud dispersal -- processes which depend sensitively on the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) into which supernovae (SNe) explode. Unfortunately, direct measurements of ISM environments around SNe remain scarce, as SNe are rare and often distant. Here we demonstrate a new approach: mapping the ISM around the massive stars that are soon to explode. This provides a much larger census of explosion sites than possible with only SNe, and allows comparison with sensitive, high-resolution maps of the atomic and molecular gas from the Jansky VLA and ALMA. In the well-resolved Local Group spiral M33, we specifically observe the environments of red supergiants (RSGs, progenitors of Type II SNe), Wolf-Rayet stars (WRs, tracing stars $>$30 M$_{\odot}$, and possibly future stripped-envelope SNe), and supernova remnants (SNRs, locations where SNe have exploded). We find that massive stars evolve not only in dense, molecular-dominated gas (with younger stars in denser gas), but also a substantial fraction ($\sim$45\% of WRs; higher for RSGs) evolve in lower-density, atomic-gas-dominated, inter-cloud media. We show that these measurements are consistent with expectations from different stellar-age tracer maps, and can be useful for validating SN feedback models in numerical simulations of galaxies. We present new GRIFFIN project hydrodynamical simulations that model the formation of galactic star cluster populations in low-metallicity ($Z=0.00021$) dwarf galaxies, including radiation, supernova and stellar wind feedback of individual massive stars. In the simulations, stars are sampled from the stellar initial mass function (IMF) down to the hydrogen burning limit of $0.08$ M$_\odot$. Mass conservation is enforced within a radius of $1$ pc for the formation of massive stars. We find that massive stars are preferentially found in star clusters and follow a correlation set at birth between the highest initial stellar mass and the star cluster mass that differs from pure stochastic IMF sampling. With a fully sampled IMF, star clusters lose mass in the galactic tidal field according to mass-loss rates observed in nearby galaxies. Of the released stellar feedback, $60\%$ of the supernova material and up to $35\%$ of the wind material reside either in the hot interstellar medium (ISM) or in gaseous, metal enriched outflows. While stellar winds (instantaneously) and supernovae (delayed) start enriching the ISM right after the first massive stars form, the formation of supernova-enriched stars and star clusters is significantly delayed (by $>50$ Myr) compared to the formation of stars and star clusters enriched by stellar winds. Overall, supernova ejecta dominate the enrichment by mass, while the number of enriched stars is determined by continuous stellar winds. These results present a concept for the formation of chemically distinct populations of stars in bound star clusters, reminiscent of multiple populations in globular clusters., Comment: 26 pages, 23 figures. We present [CII] synthetic observations of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of a dwarf galaxy merger. The merging process varies the star-formation rate by more than three orders of magnitude. Several star clusters are formed, the feedback of which disperses and unbinds the dense gas through expanding HII regions and supernova (SN) explosions. For galaxies with properties similar to the modelled ones, we find that the [CII] emission remains optically thin throughout the merging process. We identify the Warm Neutral Medium ($3<\log T_{\rm gas}<4$ with $\chi_{\rm HI}>2\chi_{\rm H2}$) to be the primary source of [CII] emission ($\sim58\%$ contribution), although at stages when the HII regions are young and dense (during star cluster formation or SNe in the form of ionized bubbles) they can contribute $\gtrsim50\%$ to the total [CII] emission. We find that the [CII]/FIR ratio decreases due to thermal saturation of the [CII] emission caused by strong FUV radiation fields emitted by the massive star clusters, leading to a [CII]-deficit medium. We investigate the [CII]-SFR relation and find an approximately linear correlation which agrees well with observations, particularly those from the Dwarf Galaxy Survey. Our simulation reproduces the observed trends of [CII]/FIR versus $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm FIR}$, and it agrees well with the Kennicutt relation of SFR-FIR luminosity. Observations of the cosmic evolution of different gas phases across time indicate a marked increase in the molecular gas mass density towards $z\sim 2-3$. Such a transformation implies an accompanied change in the global distribution of molecular hydrogen column densities ($N_{\rm{H_2}}$). Using observations by PHANGS-ALMA/SDSS and simulations by GRIFFIN/IllustrisTNG we explore the evolution of this H$_2$ column density distribution function [$f(N_{\rm{H}_2})$]. The H$_2$ (and HI) column density maps for TNG50 and TNG100 are derived in post-processing and are made available through the IllustrisTNG online API. The shape and normalization of $f(N_{\rm{H}_2})$ of individual main-sequence star-forming galaxies are correlated with the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (${M_*}$), and H$_2$ mass ($M_{\rm{H}_2}$) in both observations and simulations. TNG100, combined with H$_2$ post-processing models, broadly reproduces observations, albeit with differences in slope and normalization. Also, an analytically modelled $f(N)$, based on exponential gas disks, matches well with the simulations. The GRIFFIN simulation gives first indications that the slope of $f(N_{\rm{H}_2})$ might not majorly differ when including non-equilibrium chemistry in simulations. The $f(N_{\rm{H}_2})$ by TNG100 implies that higher molecular gas column densities are reached at $z=3$ than at $z=0$. Further, denser regions contribute more to the molecular mass density at $z=3$. Finally, H$_2$ starts dominating compared to HI only at column densities above log($N_{\rm{H}_2} / \rm{cm}^{-2}) \sim 21.8-22$ at both redshifts. These results imply that neutral atomic gas is an important contributor to the overall cold gas mass found in the ISM of galaxies including at densities typical for molecular clouds at $z=0$ and $z=3$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. We present a photometric analysis of star and star cluster (SC) formation in a high-resolution simulation of a dwarf galaxy starburst that allows the formation of individual stars to be followed. Previous work demonstrated that the properties of the SCs formed in the simulation are in good agreement with observations. In this paper, we create mock spectral energy distributions and broad-band photometric images using the radiative transfer code SKIRT 9. We test several observational star formation rate (SFR) tracers and find that $24$ $\mu$m, total infrared and H$\alpha$ trace the underlying SFR during the (post)starburst phase, while UV tracers yield a more accurate picture of star formation during quiescent phases prior to and after the merger. We then place the simulated galaxy at distances of $10$ and $50$ Mpc and use aperture photometry at Hubble Space Telescope resolution to analyse the simulated SC population. During the starburst phase, a hierarchically forming set of SCs leads inaccurate source separation because of crowding. This results in estimated SC mass function slopes that are up to $\sim0.3$ shallower than the true slope of $\sim-1.9$ to $-2$ found for the bound clusters identified from the particle data in the simulation. The masses of the largest clusters are overestimated by a factor of up to $2.9$ due to unresolved clusters within the apertures. The aperture-based analysis also produces a relation between cluster formation efficiency and SFR surface density that is slightly flatter than that recovered from bound clusters. We present results on the star cluster properties from a series of high resolution smoothed particles hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies as part of the GRIFFIN project. The simulations at sub-parsec spatial resolution and a minimum particle mass of 4 $\mathrm{M_\odot}$ incorporate non-equilibrium heating, cooling and chemistry processes, and realise individual massive stars. All the simulations follow feedback channels of massive stars that include the interstellar-radiation field, that is variable in space and time, the radiation input by photo-ionisation and supernova explosions. Varying the star formation efficiency per free-fall time in the range $\epsilon_\mathrm{ff}$ = 0.2 - 50$\%$ neither changes the star formation rates nor the outflow rates. While the environmental densities at star formation change significantly with $\epsilon_\mathrm{ff}$, the ambient densities of supernovae are independent of $\epsilon_\mathrm{ff}$ indicating a decoupling of the two processes. At low $\epsilon_\mathrm{ff}$, more massive, and increasingly more bound star clusters are formed, which are typically not destroyed. With increasing $\epsilon_\mathrm{ff}$ there is a trend for shallower cluster mass functions and the cluster formation efficiency $\Gamma$ for young bound clusters decreases from $50 \%$ to $\sim 1 \%$ showing evidence for cluster disruption. However, none of our simulations form low mass ($< 10^3$ $\mathrm{M_\odot}$) clusters with structural properties in perfect agreement with observations. Traditional star formation models used in galaxy formation simulations based on local free-fall times might therefore not be able to capture low mass star cluster properties without significant fine-tuning., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. We analyze the three-dimensional shapes and kinematics of the young star cluster population forming in a high-resolution GRIFFIN project simulation of a metal-poor dwarf galaxy starburst. The star clusters, which follow a power-law mass distribution, form from the cold ISM phase with an IMF sampled with individual stars down to 4 solar masses at sub-parsec spatial resolution. Massive stars and their important feedback mechanisms are modelled in detail. The simulated clusters follow a surprisingly tight relation between the specific angular momentum and mass with indications of two sub-populations. Massive clusters ($M_\mathrm{cl}\gtrsim 3\times 10^4 M_{\odot})$ have the highest specific angular momenta at low ellipticities ($\epsilon\sim 0.2$) and show alignment between their shapes and rotation. Lower mass clusters have lower specific angular momenta with larger scatter, show a broader range of elongations, and are typically misaligned indicating that they are not shaped by rotation. The most massive clusters $(M \gtrsim 10^5\,M_{\odot})$ accrete gas and proto-clusters from a $ \lesssim 100\,\rm pc$ scale local galactic environment on a $t \lesssim 10\,\rm Myr$ timescale, inheriting the ambient angular momentum properties. Their two-dimensional kinematic maps show ordered rotation at formation, up to $v \sim 8.5\,\rm km s^{-1}$, consistent with observed young massive clusters and old globular clusters, which they might evolve into. The massive clusters have angular momentum parameters $\lambda_R\lesssim 0.5$ and show Gauss-Hermite coefficients $h_3$ that are anti-correlated with the velocity, indicating asymmetric line-of-sight velocity distributions as a signature of a dissipative formation process., Comment: 21 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent integral field spectroscopic (IFS) surveys have revealed radial gradients in the optical spectral indices of post-starburst galaxies, which can be used to constrain their formation histories. We study the spectral indices of post-processed mock IFS datacubes of binary merger simulations, carefully matched to the properties of the MaNGA IFS survey, with a variety of black hole feedback models, progenitor galaxies, orbits and mass ratios. Based on our simulation sample, we find that only major mergers on prograde-prograde or retrograde-prograde orbits in combination with a mechanical black hole feedback model can form galaxies with weak enough ongoing star formation, and therefore absent H$\alpha$ emission, to be selected by traditional PSB selection methods. We find strong fluctuations in nebular emission line strengths, even within the PSB phase, suggesting that H$\alpha$ selected PSBs are only a subsample of the underlying population. The global PSB population can be more robustly identified using stellar continuum-based approaches. The difficulty in reproducing the very young PSBs in simulations potentially indicates that new sub-resolution star formation recipes are required to properly model the process of star formation quenching. In our simulations, we find that the starburst peaks at the same time at all radii, but is stronger and more prolonged in the inner regions. We describe a population of young star clusters (SCs) formed in a hydrodynamical simulation of a gas-rich dwarf galaxy merger resolved with individual massive stars at sub-parsec spatial resolution. The simulation is part of the GRIFFIN (Galaxy Realizations Including Feedback From INdividual massive stars) project. The star formation environment during the simulation spans seven orders of magnitude in gas surface density and thermal pressure, and the global star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$) varies by more than three orders of magnitude during the simulation. Young SCs more massive than $M_{\mathrm{*,cl}}\sim 10^{2.5}\,M_{\odot}$ form along a mass function with a power-law index $\alpha\sim-1.7$ ($\alpha\sim-2$ for $M_{\mathrm{*,cl}}\gtrsim10^{3}\,M_{\odot}$) at all merger phases, while the normalization and the highest SC masses (up to $\sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$) correlate with $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$. The cluster formation efficiency varies from $\Gamma\sim20\%$ in early merger phases to $\Gamma\sim80\%$ at the peak of the starburst and is compared to observations and model predictions. The massive SCs ($\gtrsim10^4\,M_{\odot}$) have sizes and mean surface densities similar to observed young massive SCs. Simulated lower mass clusters appear slightly more concentrated than observed. All SCs form on timescales of a few Myr and lose their gas rapidly resulting in typical stellar age spreads between $\sigma\sim0.1-2$ Myr ($1\sigma$), consistent with observations. The age spreads increase with cluster mass, with the most massive cluster ($\sim10^6\, M_{\odot}$) reaching a spread of $5\, \mathrm{Myr}$ once its hierarchical formation finishes. We present a hydro-dynamical simulation at sub-parsec and few solar mass resolution of a merger between two gas-rich dwarf galaxies. Our simulation includes a detailed model for the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) and is able to follow the entire formation history of spatially resolved star clusters, including feedback from individual massive stars. Shortly after the merger we find a population of $\sim 900$ stellar clusters with masses above $10^{2.5}\; \rm{M_\odot}$ and a cluster mass function (CMF), which is well fitted with a power-law with a slope of $\alpha=-1.70\pm0.08$. We describe here in detail the formation of the three most massive clusters (M$_{*} \gtrsim 10^5$ M$_\odot$), which populate the high-mass end of the CMF. The simulated clusters form rapidly on a timescale of $6$-$8$ Myr in converging flows of dense gas. The embedded merger phase has extremely high star formation rate surface densities of $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}>10\; \mathrm{M}_\odot\; \mathrm{yr}^{-1}\; \mathrm{kpc}^{-2}$ and thermal gas pressures in excess of $P_{\rm th}\sim10^7 \; \mathrm{k}_{\rm B}\;(\rm K\;\mathrm{cm}^{-3})^{-1}$. The formation process is terminated by rapid gas expulsion driven by the first generation of supernovae, after which the cluster centers relax and both their structure and kinematics become indistinguishable from observed local globular clusters. Post-starburst galaxies can be identified via the presence of prominent Hydrogen Balmer absorption lines in their spectra. We present a comprehensive study of the origin of strong Balmer lines in a volume-limited sample of 189 galaxies with $0.019.5$ and projected axis ratio $b/a>0.32$. We explore their structural properties, environments, emission lines and star formation histories, and compare them to control samples of star-forming and quiescent galaxies, and simulated galaxy mergers. Excluding contaminants, in which the strong Balmer lines are most likely caused by dust-star geometry, we find evidence for three different pathways through the post-starburst phase, with most events occurring in intermediate-density environments: (1) a significant disruptive event, such as a gas-rich major merger, causing a starburst and growth of a spheroidal component, followed by quenching of the star formation (70% of post-starburst galaxies at $9.5<\log(\mbox{M}_{\star}/\mbox{M}_{\odot})<10.5$ and 60% at $\log(\mbox{M}_{\star}/\mbox{M}_{\odot})>10.5$); (2) at $9.5<\log(\mbox{M}_{\star}/\mbox{M}_{\odot})<10.5$, stochastic star formation in blue-sequence galaxies, causing a weak burst and subsequent return to the blue sequence (30%); (3) at $\log(\mbox{M}_{\star}/\mbox{M}_{\odot})>10.5$, cyclic evolution of quiescent galaxies which gradually move towards the high-mass end of the red sequence through weak starbursts, possibly as a result of a merger with a smaller gas-rich companion (40%). Our analysis suggests that AGN are `on' for $50%$ of the duration of the post-starburst phase, meaning that traditional samples of post-starburst galaxies with strict emission line cuts will be at least $50%$ incomplete due to the exclusion of narrow-line AGN., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 19 figures, 39 pages

We present a high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) and follow the evolution $3$ Gyrs beyond the final coalescence. The simulation includes metallicity dependent cooling, star formation, and both stellar feedback and chemical enrichment. The simulated best-match Antennae reproduces well both the observed morphology and the off-nuclear starburst. We also produce for the first time a simulated two-dimensional metallicity map of the Antennae and find good agreement with the observed metallicity of off-nuclear stellar clusters, however the nuclear metallicities are overproduced by $\sim 0.5$ dex. Using the radiative transfer code SKIRT we produce multi-wavelength observations of both the Antennae and the merger remnant. The $1$ Gyr old remnant is well fitted with a S\'ersic profile of $n=7.07$, and with an $r$-band effective radius of $r_{\mathrm{e}}= 1.6$ kpc and velocity dispersion of $\sigma_{\mathrm{e}}=180$ km$/$s the remnant is located on the fundamental plane of early-type galaxies (ETGs). The initially blue Antennae remnant evolves onto the red sequence after $\sim 2.5$ Gyr of secular evolution. The remnant would be classified as a fast rotator, as the specific angular momentum evolves from $\lambda_{\mathrm{Re}}\approx0.11$ to $\lambda_{\mathrm{Re}}\approx0.14$ during its evolution. The remnant shows ordered rotation and a double peaked maximum in the mean 2D line-of-sight velocity. These kinematical features are relatively common among local ETGs and we specifically identify three local ETGs (NGC 3226, NGC 3379 and NGC 4494) in the ATLAS$^\mathrm{3D}$ sample, whose photometric and kinematic properties most resemble the Antennae remnant., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures, revised version accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present KETJU, a new extension of the widely-used smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation code GADGET-3. The key feature of the code is the inclusion of algorithmically regularized regions around every supermassive black hole (SMBH). This allows for simultaneously following global galactic-scale dynamical and astrophysical processes, while solving the dynamics of SMBHs, SMBH binaries and surrounding stellar systems at sub-parsec scales. The KETJU code includes Post-Newtonian terms in the equations of motions of the SMBHs which enables a new SMBH merger criterion based on the gravitational wave coalescence timescale pushing the merger separation of SMBHs down to $\sim 0.005$ pc. We test the performance of our code by comparison to NBODY7 and rVINE. We set up dynamically stable multi-component merger progenitor galaxies to study the SMBH binary evolution during galaxy mergers. In our simulation sample the SMBH binaries do not suffer from the final-parsec problem, which we attribute to the non-spherical shape of the merger remnants. For bulge-only models, the hardening rate decreases with increasing resolution, whereas for models which in addition include massive dark matter halos the SMBH binary hardening rate becomes practically independent of the mass resolution of the stellar bulge. The SMBHs coalesce on average 200 Myr after the formation of the SMBH binary. However, small differences in the initial SMBH binary eccentricities can result in large differences in the SMBH coalescence times. Finally, we discuss the future prospects of KETJU, which allows for a straightforward inclusion of gas physics in the simulations., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ
