The fine control at the atomic level allowed by ALD technology creates the perfect conditions for the inclusion of new cationic or anionic elements of the already-known materials. Consequently, novel material characteristics may arise with new functions for applications. This is especially relevant for inorganic luminescent materials where slight changes in the vicinity of the luminescent centers may originate new emission properties. Here, we studied the luminescent properties of CaS:Eu by introducing europium with oxygen ions by ALD, resulting in a novel CaS:EuO thin film. We study structural and photoluminescent properties of two different ALD deposited Eu doped CaS thin films: Eu(thd)3 which reacted with H2S forming CaS:Eu phosphor, or with O3 originating a CaS:EuO phosphor. It was found that the emission wavelength of CaS:EuO was 625.8 nm whereas CaS:Eu was 647 nm. Thus, the inclusion of O2- ions by ALD in a CaS:Eu phosphor results in the blue-shift of 21.2 nm. Our results show that ALD can be an effective way to introduce additional elements (e.g., anionic elements) to engineer the physical properties (e.g., inorganic phosphor emissions) for photonics and optoelectronics.

This work reports our initial experiments to support nickel on mesoporous zirconia. Nickel (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate)2 [Ni(thd)2] was reacted in a fixed-bed ALD reactor with zirconia, characterised with BET surface area of 72 m2/g and mean pore size of 14 nm. According to X-ray fluorescence measurements, the average nickel loading on the top part of the support bed was on the order of 1 wt%, corresponding to circa one nickel atom per square nanometre. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy confirmed that in the top part of the fixed support bed, nickel was distributed throughout the zirconia particles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the nickel oxidation state to be two. Organic thd ligands remained complete on the surface after the Ni(thd)2 reaction with zirconia, as followed with diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The ligands could be fully removed by oxidation at 400 °C. These initial results indicate that nickel catalysts on zirconia can likely be made by ALD. Before catalytic testing, in addition to increasing the nickel loading by repeated ALD cycles, optimization of the process parameters is required to ensure uniform distribution of nickel throughout the support bed and within the zirconia particles.

Techniques to control vehicle engine emissions have been under increasing need for development during the last few years in the more and more strictly regulated society. In this study, vehicle-aged heavy-duty catalysts from diesel and natural gas engines were analyzed using a cross-sectional electron microscopy method with both a scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. Also, additional supporting characterization methods including X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and catalytic performance analyses were used to reveal the ageing effects. Structural and elemental investigations were performed on these samples, and the effect of real-life ageing of the catalyst was studied in comparison with fresh catalyst samples. In the real-life use of two different catalysts, the poison penetration varied greatly depending on the engine and fuel at hand: the diesel oxidation catalyst appeared to suffer more thorough changes than the natural gas catalyst, which was affected only in the inlet part of the catalyst. The most common poison, sulphur, in the diesel oxidation catalyst was connected to cerium-rich areas. On the other hand, the severities of the ageing effects were more pronounced in the natural gas catalyst, with heavy structural changes in the washcoat and high concentrations of poisons, mainly zinc, phosphorus and silicon, on the surface of the inlet part. publishedVersion
