Search

Moir\'e superlattices, engineered through precise stacking of van der Waals (vdW) layers, hold immense promise for exploring strongly correlated and topological phenomena. However, these applications have been held back by the common preparation method: tear-and-stack of Scotch tape exfoliated monolayers. It has low efficiency and reproducibility, along with challenges of twist angle inhomogeneity, interfacial contamination, micrometer sizes, and a tendency to untwist at elevated temperatures. Here we report an effective strategy to construct highly consistent vdW moir\'e structures with high production throughput, near-unity yield, pristine interfaces, precisely controlled twist angles, and macroscopic scale (up to centimeters) with enhanced thermal stability. We further demonstrate the versatility across various vdW materials including transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and hBN. The expansive size and high quality of moir\'e structures enables high-resolution mapping of the reciprocal space back-folded lattices and moir\'e mini band structures with low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Recent quasar absorption line observations suggest that reionization may end as late as $z \approx 5.3$. As a means to search for large neutral hydrogen islands at $z<6$, we revisit long dark gaps in the Ly$\beta$ forest in VLT/X-Shooter and Keck/ESI quasar spectra. We stack the Ly$\alpha$ forest corresponding to both edges of these Ly$\beta$ dark gaps and identify a damping wing-like extended absorption profile. The average redshift of the stacked forest is $z=5.8$. By comparing these observations with reionization simulations, we infer that such a damping wing-like feature can be naturally explained if these gaps are at least partially created by neutral islands. Conversely, simulated dark gaps lacking neutral hydrogen struggle to replicate the observed damping wing features. Furthermore, this damping wing-like profile implies that the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction must be $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle \geq 6.1 \pm 3.9\%$ at $z = 5.8$. We investigate the black hole mass function at $z\sim5$ using XQz5, our recent sample of the most luminous quasars between the redshifts $4.5 < z < 5.3$. We include 72 quasars with black hole masses estimated from velocity-broadened emission-line measurements and single-epoch virial prescriptions in the footprint of a highly complete parent survey. The sample mean Eddington ratio and standard deviation is $\log\lambda \approx -0.20\pm0.24$. The completeness-corrected mass function is modelled as a double power-law, and we constrain its evolution across redshift assuming accretion-dominated mass growth. We estimate the evolution of the mass function from $z=5-4$, presenting joint constraints on accretion properties through a measured dimensionless e-folding parameter, $k_{\rm{ef}} \equiv \langle\lambda\rangle U (1-\epsilon)/\epsilon = 1.79\pm0.06$, where $\langle\lambda\rangle$ is the mean Eddington ratio, $U$ is the duty cycle, and $\epsilon$ is the radiative efficiency. If these supermassive black holes were to form from seeds smaller than $10^8\,M_{\odot}$, the growth rate must have been considerably faster at $z\gg5$ than observed from $z=5-4$. A growth rate exceeding $3\times$ the observed rate would reduce the initial heavy seed mass to $10^{5-6}\,M_{\odot}$, aligning with supermassive star and/or direct collapse seed masses. Stellar mass ($10^2\,M_{\odot}$) black hole seeds would require $\gtrsim4.5\times$ the observed growth rate at $z\gg5$ to reproduce the measured active black hole mass function. The attenuation of Ly$\alpha$ photons by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $z\gtrsim5$ continues to be a powerful probe for studying the epoch of reionisation. Given a framework to estimate the intrinsic (true) Ly$\alpha$ emission of high-$z$ sources, one can infer the ionisation state of the IGM during reionisation. In this work, we use the enlarged XQR-30 sample of 42 high-resolution and high-SNR QSO spectra between $5.8\lesssim\,z\lesssim\,6.6$ obtained with VLT/X-Shooter to place constraints on the IGM neutral fraction. This is achieved using our existing Bayesian QSO reconstruction framework which accounts for uncertainties such as the: (i) posterior distribution of predicted intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ emission profiles (obtained via covariance matrix reconstruction of the Ly$\alpha$ and N V emission lines from unattenuated high-ionisation emission line profiles; C IV, Si IV + O IV] and C III]) and (ii) distribution of ionised regions within the IGM using synthetic damping wing profiles drawn from a $1.6^3$ Gpc$^3$ reionisation simulation. Following careful quality control, we used 23 of the 42 available QSOs to obtain constraints/limits on the IGM neutral fraction during the tail-end of reionisation. Our median and 68th percentile constraints on the IGM neutral fraction are: $0.20\substack{+0.14\\-0.12}$ and $0.29\substack{+0.14\\-0.13}$ at $z = 6.15$~and 6.35. Further, we also report 68th percentile upper-limits of $\bar{x}_{\mathrm{H\,{\scriptscriptstyle I}}} < 0.21$, 0.20, 0.21 and 0.18 at $z = 5.8, 5.95, 6.05$~and 6.55. These results imply reionisation is still ongoing at $5.8\lesssim\,z\lesssim\,6.55$, consistent with previous results from XQR-30 (dark fraction and Ly$\alpha$ forest) along with other observational probes considered in the literature., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables. Although the mass growth of supermassive black holes during the Epoch of Reionisation is expected to play a role in shaping the concurrent growth of their host-galaxies, observational evidence of feedback at z$\gtrsim$6 is still sparse. We perform the first multi-scale and multi-phase characterisation of black-hole driven outflows in the $z\sim6.6$ quasar J0923+0402 and assess how these winds impact the cold gas reservoir. We employ the SimBAL spectral synthesis to fit broad absorption line (BAL) features and find a powerful ionized outflow on $\lesssim210$ pc scale, with a kinetic power $\sim2-100$\% of the quasar luminosity. ALMA observations of [CII] emission allow us to study the morphology and kinematics of the cold gas. We detect high-velocity [CII] emission, likely associated with a cold neutral outflow at $\sim0.5-2$ kpc scale in the host-galaxy, and a bright extended [CII] halo with a size of $\sim15$ kpc. For the first time at such an early epoch, we accurately constrain the outflow energetics in both the ionized and the atomic neutral gas phases. We find such energetics to be consistent with expectations for an efficient feedback mechanism, and both ejective and preventative feedback modes are likely at play. The scales and energetics of the ionized and atomic outflows suggest that they might be associated with different quasar accretion episodes. The results of this work indicate that strong black hole feedback is occurring in quasars at $z\gtrsim6$ and is likely responsible for shaping the properties of the cold gas reservoir up to circum-galactic scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

This study explores the metal enrichment signatures attributed to the first generation of stars (PopIII) in the Universe, focusing on the E-XQR-30 sample. We aim to identify traces of Pop III metal enrichment by analyzing neutral gas in the interstellar medium of primordial galaxies and their satellite clumps, detected in absorption. To chase the chemical signature of PopIII stars, we studied metal absorption systems in the E-XQR-30 sample, selected through the detection of the OI absorption line at 1302A. The OI line is a reliable tracer of HI and allowed us to overcome the challenges posed by the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest's increasing saturation at redshifts above $\sim5$ to identify Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems (DLA). We detected and analyzed 29 OI systems at $z\geq5.4$, differentiating between proximate DLAs (PDLA) and intervening DLAs. Voigt function fits were applied to obtain ionic column densities, and relative chemical abundances were determined for 28 systems. These were then compared with the predictions of theoretical models. Our findings expand the study of OI systems at $z\geq5.4$ fourfold. No systematic differences were observed in the average chemical abundances between PDLAs and intervening DLAs. The chemical abundances in our sample align with literature systems at $z>4.5$, suggesting a similar enrichment pattern for this class of absorption systems. Intervening metal absorbers in quasar spectra at $z > 6$ can be used as probes to study the chemical enrichment of the Universe during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). This work presents the comoving line densities ($dn/dX$) of low ionisation absorbers, namely, Mg II (2796\r{A}), C II (1334\r{A}) and O I (1302\r{A}) across $2 0.03$\r{A}. For the first time, we present the comoving line densities of 131 weak ($W < 0.3$\r{A}) intervening Mg II absorbers at $1.9 < z < 6.4$ which exhibit constant evolution with redshift similar to medium ($0.3 < W < 1.0$\r{A}) absorbers. However, the cosmic mass density of Mg II - dominated by strong Mg II systems - traces the evolution of global star formation history from redshift 1.9 to 5.5. E-XQR-30 also increases the absorption path length by a factor of 50% for C II and O I whose line densities show a rising trend towards $z > 5$, in agreement with previous works. In the context of a decline in metal enrichment of the Universe at $z > 5$, the overall evolution in the incidence rates of absorption systems can be explained by a weak - possibly soft fluctuating - UV background. Our results, thereby, provide evidence for a late reionization continuing to occur in metal-enriched and therefore, biased regions in the Universe., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures

Around a million quasars have been catalogued in the Universe by probing deeper and using new methods for discovery. However, the hardest ones to find seem to be the rarest and brightest specimen. In this work, we study the properties of the most luminous of all quasars found so far. It has been overlooked until recently, which demonstrates that modern all-sky surveys have much to reveal. The black hole in this quasar accretes around one solar mass per day onto an existing mass of $\sim$17 billion solar masses. In this process its accretion disc alone releases a radiative energy of $2\times 10^{41}$ Watts. If the quasar is not strongly gravitationally lensed, then its broad line region (BLR) is expected to have the largest physical and angular diameter occurring in the Universe, and will allow the Very Large Telescope Interferometer to image its rotation and measure its black hole mass directly. The variations in Ly$\alpha$ forest opacity observed at $z>5.3$ between lines of sight to different background quasars are too strong to be caused by fluctuations in the density field alone. The leading hypothesis for the cause of this excess variance is a late, ongoing reionization process at redshifts below six. Another model proposes strong ionizing background fluctuations coupled to a short, spatially varying mean free path of ionizing photons, without explicitly invoking incomplete reionization. With recent observations suggesting a short mean free path at $z\sim6$, and a dramatic improvement in $z>5$ Ly$\alpha$ forest data quality, we revisit this latter possibility. Here we apply the likelihood-free inference technique of approximate Bayesian computation to jointly constrain the hydrogen photoionization rate $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ and the mean free path of ionizing photons $\lambda_{\rm mfp}$ from the effective optical depth distributions at $z=5.0$-$6.1$ from XQR-30. We find that the observations are well-described by fluctuating mean free path models with average mean free paths that are consistent with the steep trend implied by independent measurements at $z\sim5$-$6$, with a concomitant rapid evolution of the photoionization rate., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted to ApJ after referee's comments

Bright quasar samples at high redshift are useful for investigating active galactic nuclei evolution. In this study, we describe XQz5, a sample of 83 ultraluminous quasars in the redshift range $4.5 < z < 5.3$ with optical and near-infrared spectroscopic observations, with unprecendented completeness at the bright end of the quasar luminosity function. The sample is observed with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope, the Very Large Telescope, and the ANU 2.3m Telescope, resulting in a high-quality, moderate-resolution spectral atlas of the brightest known quasars within the redshift range. We use established virial mass relations to derive the black hole masses by measuring the observed Mg\,\textsc{ii}$\lambda$2799\AA\ emission-line and we estimate the bolometric luminosity with bolometric corrections to the UV continuum. Comparisons to literature samples show that XQz5 bridges the redshift gap between other X-shooter quasar samples, XQ-100 and XQR-30, and is a brighter sample than both. Luminosity-matched lower-redshift samples host more massive black holes, which indicate that quasars at high redshift are more active than their counterparts at lower-redshift, in concordance with recent literature., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication

The black hole (BH) mass and luminosity are key factors in determining how a quasar interacts with its environment. In this study, we utilise data from the European Southern Observatory Large Programme XQ-100, a high-quality sample of 100 X-shooter spectra of the most luminous quasars in the redshift range $3.5 < z < 4.5$, and measure the properties of three prominent optical and ultraviolet broad emission-lines present in the wide wavelength coverage of X-shooter: CIV, MgII, and H$\beta$. The line properties of all three broad lines are used for virial estimates of the BH mass and their resulting mass estimates for this sample are tightly correlated. The BH mass range is $\log{(\rm{M_{BH}}/\rm{M_\odot})} = 8.6-10.3$ with bolometric luminosities estimated from the 3000A continuum in the range $\log{(\rm{L_{bol}}/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 46.7-48.0$. Robustly determined properties of these quasars enable a variety of follow-up research in quasar astrophysics, from chemical abundance and evolution in the broad-line region to radiatively driven quasar outflows., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

Recently, the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest flux auto-correlation function has been shown to be sensitive to the mean free path of hydrogen-ionizing photons, $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$, for simulations at $z \geq 5.4$. Measuring $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ at these redshifts will give vital information on the ending of reionization. Here we present the first observational measurements of the Ly$\alpha$ forest flux auto-correlation functions in ten redshift bins from $5.1 \leq z \leq 6.0$. We use a sample of 35 quasar sightlines at $z > 5.7$ from the extended XQR-30 data set, this data has signal-to-noise ratios of $> 20$ per spectral pixel. We carefully account for systematic errors in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly$\alpha$ systems. With these measurements, we introduce software tools to generate auto-correlation function measurements from any simulation. For an initial comparison, we show our auto-correlation measurements with simulation models for recently measured $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ values and find good agreements. Further work in modeling and understanding the covariance matrices of the data is necessary to get robust measurements of $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ from this data., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Given the anisotropic emission from quasar accretion discs, their viewing angle affects estimates of the quasar luminosity, black-hole mass and Eddington ratio. Discs appear overluminous when viewed pole-on and underluminous when viewed at high inclination. In radio-quiet quasars, the viewing angle is usually unknown, although spectroscopic indicators have been proposed. Here, we use a recently discovered universality in the variability structure function (SF) of quasar light curves (LCs), where all quasars show the same SF when clocks run in units of orbital timescale. As an offset from the mean relation can be caused by incorrect orbital timescales and thus incorrect luminosities, we correlate these offsets with suggested inclination indicators. We derive SFs from NASA/ATLAS LCs spanning $\sim 6$ years of observation, using a sample of 183 luminous quasars with measured H$\beta$ lines as well as 753 quasars with CIV and MgII lines. Starting from the proposed orientation indicators, we expect quasars with narrower H$\beta$ lines and with more blueshifted CIV lines to be viewed more pole-on and thus appear overluminous. In contrast, our SF analysis finds that presumed pole-on discs appear underluminous, consistently for both line indicators. We discuss possible explanations for the behaviour of quasars with highly blueshifted CIV lines irrespective of inclination angle, including dusty outflows that might render the accretion disc underluminous and flatter disc temperature profiles with longer orbital timescales than in thin-disc models but reach no satisfying conclusion., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of their central supermassive black holes as well as the intergalactic medium in the last stages of reionization. We present 22 new measurements of proximity zones of quasars with redshifts between 5.8 and 6.6, using the enlarged XQR-30 sample of high-resolution, high-SNR quasar spectra. The quasars in our sample have UV magnitudes of $M_{1450}\sim -27$ and black hole masses of $10^9$$\unicode{x2013}$$10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Our inferred proximity zone sizes are 2$\unicode{x2013}$7 physical Mpc, with a typical uncertainty of less than 0.5 physical Mpc, which, for the first time, also includes uncertainty in the quasar continuum. We find that the correlation between proximity zone sizes and the quasar redshift, luminosity, or black hole mass, indicates a large diversity of quasar lifetimes. Two of our proximity zone sizes are exceptionally small. The spectrum of one of these quasars, with $z=6.02$, displays, unusually for this redshift, damping wing absorption without any detectable metal lines, which could potentially originate from the IGM. The other quasar has a high-ionization absorber $\sim$0.5 pMpc from the edge of the proximity zone. This work increases the number of proximity zone measurements available in the last stages of cosmic reionization to 87. This data will lead to better constraints on quasar lifetimes and obscuration fractions at high redshift, which in turn will help probe the seed mass and formation redshift of supermassive black holes., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Accepted in MNRAS

We measure the mean free path ($\lambda_{\rm mfp,HI}$), photo-ionization rate ($\langle \Gamma_{\rm HI} \rangle$) and neutral fraction ($\langle f_{\rm HI} \rangle$) of hydrogen in 12 redshift bins at $4.85

We develop an accretion disc (AD) fitting method, utilising thin and slim disc models and Bayesian inference with the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo approach, testing it on the most luminous known quasar, SMSS J215728.21-360215.1, at redshift $z=4.692$. With a spectral energy distribution constructed from near-infrared spectra and broadband photometry, the AD models find a black hole mass of $\log(M_{\rm{AD}}/M_{\odot}) = 10.31^{+0.17}_{-0.14}$ with an anisotropy-corrected bolometric luminosity of $\log{(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 47.87 \pm 0.10$, and derive an Eddington ratio of $0.29^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$ as well as a radiative efficiency of $0.09^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$. Using the near-infrared spectra, we estimate the single-epoch virial black hole mass estimate to be $\log(M_{\rm{SE}}/M_{\odot}) = 10.33 \pm 0.08$, with a monochromatic luminosity at 3000\AA\ of $\log{(L(\rm{3000\text{\AA}})/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 47.66 \pm 0.01$. As an independent approach, AD fitting has the potential to complement the single-epoch virial mass method in obtaining stronger constraints on properties of massive quasar black holes across a wide range of redshifts., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

We describe the first results from the All-sky BRIght, Complete Quasar Survey (AllBRICQS), which aims to discover the last remaining optically bright quasars. We present 156 spectroscopically confirmed quasars (140 newly identified) having |b|>10deg. 152 of the quasars have Gaia DR3 magnitudes brighter than B_P=16.5 or R_P=16 mag, while four are slightly fainter. The quasars span a redshift range of z=0.07-3.93. In particular, we highlight the properties of J0529-4351 at z=3.93, which, if unlensed, is one of the most intrinsically luminous quasars in the Universe. The AllBRICQS sources have been selected by combining data from the Gaia and WISE all-sky satellite missions, and we successfully identify quasars not flagged as candidates by Gaia Data Release 3. We expect the completeness to be approximately 96% within our magnitude and latitude limits, while the preliminary results indicate a selection purity of approximately 96%. The optical spectroscopy used for source classification will also enable detailed quasar characterisation, including black hole mass measurements and identification of foreground absorption systems. We report the discovery of a bright (g = 14.5 mag (AB), K = 11.9 mag (Vega)) quasar at redshift z = 0.83 -- the optically brightest (unbeamed) quasar at z > 0.4. SMSS J114447.77-430859.3, at a Galactic latitude of b = +18.1deg, was identified by its optical colours from the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) during a search for symbiotic binary stars. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy reveals broad MgII, H-beta, H-alpha, and Pa-beta emission lines, from which we measure a black hole mass of log10(M_BH/M_Sun) = 9.4 +/- 0.5. With its high luminosity, L_bol = (4.7 +/- 1.0) * 10^47 erg/s or M_i(z=2) = -29.74 mag (AB), we estimate an Eddington ratio of ~1.4. As the most luminous quasar known over the last ~9 Gyr of cosmic history, having a luminosity 8 times greater than 3C 273, the source offers a range of potential follow-up opportunities., Comment: 13 pages. We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near reionization using dark gaps in the Lyman-$\beta$ (Ly$\beta$) forest. With its lower optical depth, Ly$\beta$ offers a potentially more sensitive probe to any remaining neutral gas compared to commonly used Ly$\alpha$ line. We identify dark gaps in the Ly$\beta$ forest using spectra of 42 QSOs at $z_{\rm em}>5.5$, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme. Approximately $40\%$ of these QSO spectra exhibit dark gaps longer than $10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ at $z\simeq5.8$. By comparing the results to predictions from simulations, we find that the data are broadly consistent both with models where fluctuations in the Ly$\alpha$ forest are caused solely by ionizing ultraviolet background (UVB) fluctuations and with models that include large neutral hydrogen patches at $z<6$ due to a late end to reionization. Of particular interest is a very long ($L=28h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$) and dark ($\tau_{\rm eff} \gtrsim 6$) gap persisting down to $z\simeq 5.5$ in the Ly$\beta$ forest of the $z_{\rm}=5.85$ QSO PSO J025$-$11. This gap may support late reionization models with a volume-weighted average neutral hydrogen fraction of $ \langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle \gtrsim 5\%$ by $z=5.6$. Finally, we infer constraints on $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle$ over $5.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 6.0$ based on the observed Ly$\beta$ dark gap length distribution and a conservative relationship between gap length and neutral fraction derived from simulations. We find $\langle x_{\rm HI}\rangle \leq 0.05$, 0.17, and 0.29 at $z\simeq 5.55$, 5.75, and 5.95, respectively. The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across quasar properties: bolometric luminosity, black hole mass, and blueshift of the \civ\, line, finding no redshift evolution in the emission-line ratios by comparing our high-redshift quasars to lower-redshift (2.0 < z < 5.0) results presented in the literature. Using Cloudy-based locally optimally-emitting cloud photoionisation model relations between metallicity and emission-line flux ratios, we find the observable properties of the broad emission lines to be consistent with emission from gas clouds with metallicity that are at least 2-4 times solar. Our high-redshift measurements also confirm that the blueshift of the CIV emission line is correlated with its equivalent width, which influences line ratios normalised against CIV. Infrared excesses around white dwarf stars indicate the presence of various astrophysical objects of interest, including companions and debris disks. In this second paper of a series, we present follow-up observations of infrared excess candidates from Gaia and unWISE discussed in the first paper, Paper I. We report space-based infrared photometry at 3.6 and 4.5 micron for 174 white dwarfs from the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based near-infrared J, H, and K photometry of 235 white dwarfs from Gemini Observatory with significant overlap between Spitzer and Gemini observations. This data is used to confirm or rule-out the observed unWISE infrared excess. From the unWISE-selected candidate sample, the most promising infrared excess sample comes from both colour and flux excess, which has a Spitzer confirmation rate of 95%. We also discuss a method to distinguish infrared excess caused by stellar or sub-stellar companions from potential dust disks. In total, we confirm the infrared excess around 62 white dwarfs, 10 of which are likely to be stellar companions. The remaining 52 bright white dwarf with infrared excess beyond two microns has the potential to double the known sample of white dwarfs with dusty exoplanetary debris disks. Follow-up high-resolution spectroscopic studies of a fraction of confirmed excess white dwarfs in this sample have discovered emission from gaseous dust disks. Observations of debris disks, the products of the collisional evolution of rocky planetesimals, can be used to trace planetary activity across a wide range of stellar types. The most common end points of stellar evolution are no exception as debris disks have been observed around several dozen white dwarf stars. But instead of planetary formation, post-main-sequence debris disks are a signpost of planetary destruction, resulting in compact debris disks from the tidal disruption of remnant planetesimals. In this work, we present the discovery of five new debris disks around white dwarf stars with gaseous debris in emission. All five systems exhibit excess infrared radiation from dusty debris, emission lines from gaseous debris, and atmospheric absorption features indicating on-going accretion of metal-rich debris. In four of the systems, we detect multiple metal species in emission, some of which occur at strengths and transitions previously unseen in debris disks around white dwarf stars. Our first year of spectroscopic follow-up hints at strong variability in the emission lines that can be studied in the future, expanding the range of phenomena these post-main-sequence debris disks exhibit., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 22 pages, 14 figures. Studies of excess infrared radiation around white dwarfs provide important constraints on the evolution of planetary systems and low-mass stars beyond the main sequence stage. In this paper series, we focus on identifying and characterizing bright white dwarfs with an infrared excess. Here, we present 188 infrared excess candidates from Gaia and unWISE, 147 of which are new discoveries. Single kinesin molecular motors can processively move along a microtubule (MT) a few micrometers on average before dissociating. However, cellular length scales over which transport occurs are several hundred microns and more. Why seemingly unreliable motors are used to transport cellular cargo remains poorly understood. We propose a new theory for how low processivity, the average length of a single bout of directed motion, can enhance cellular transport when motors and cargoes must first diffusively self assemble into complexes. We employ stochastic modeling to determine the effect of processivity on overall cargo transport flux. We show that, under a wide range of physiologically relevant conditions, possessing "infinite" processivity does not maximize flux along MTs. Rather, we find that low processivity i.e., weak binding of motors to MTs, is optimal. These results shed light on the relationship between processivity and transport efficiency and offer a new theory for the physiological benefits of low motor processivity.

Particle tracking is a powerful biophysical tool that requires conversion of large video files into position time series, i.e. traces of the species of interest for data analysis. Current tracking methods, based on a limited set of input parameters to identify bright objects, are ill-equipped to handle the spectrum of spatiotemporal heterogeneity and poor signal-to-noise ratios typically presented by submicron species in complex biological environments. Extensive user involvement is frequently necessary to optimize and execute tracking methods, which is not only inefficient but introduces user bias. To develop a fully automated tracking method, we developed a convolutional neural network for particle localization from image data, comprised of over 6,000 parameters, and employed machine learning techniques to train the network on a diverse portfolio of video conditions. The neural network tracker provides unprecedented automation and accuracy, with exceptionally low false positive and false negative rates on both 2D and 3D simulated videos and 2D experimental videos of difficult-to-track species.
