Kaasujen membraanierotusten perustuu membraanimateriaalin ominaisuuksiin. Membraanierotukset ovat yleisiä jopa teollisessa mittakaavassa, johtuen niiden monista hyvistä puolista. Globaalit haasteet, kuten ilmastonmuutos ja päästöjen puhdistus, vaativat kuitenkin entistä tehokkaampia materiaaleja. Tässä diplomityössä käsitellään metalli-orgaanisia runkorakenteita (MOF), johtuen niiden potentiaalista kaasunerotusprosesseissa. Erityisesti kiinnostuksen kohteena ovat MOF-ohutkalvot, joita voidaan valmistaa yhdistetyllä atomi- ja molekyylikerroskasvatusmenetelmällä (ALD/MLD). MOF-rakenteiden muokkaamista ja suunnittelua erotuksia varten käsitellään huokoskoon ja -muodon, pintaominaisuuksien ja rakenteen joustavuuden säätämisen kannalta. Diplomityön kokeellisessa osuudessa tavoitteena oli kasvattaa suojakerros anturille. Kirjallisuuden perusteella lupaavilta vaikuttavia ohutkalvoja valmistettiin ALD/MLD-menetelmällä. Ohutkalvonäytteiden paksuutta, kiteisyyttä ja koostumusta analysoitiin. Näiden ohutkalvojen kaasun erottelukykyä vertailtiin kahdessa eri kaasuympäristössä ja mittaustulosten perusteella toivottiin löytyvän sopiva materiaali kaasunerotusta varten, tai voitavan tehdä perusteltuja jatkotutkimusehdotuksia., Membrane gas separations are based on the properties of the membrane material. Membrane separations are common even on an industrial scale, because of the many advantages they have. However, global challenges, such as climate change and emission purification, demand materials to be more and more efficient. In this thesis metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are reviewed, due to their potential in gas separation applications. MOF-thin films that can be deposited with atomic and molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) are studied in particular. Design and tailoring of MOFs for separation processes are also discussed. In the experimental section of the thesis, the aim was to deposit a protective layer on a sensor. Based on literature survey, promising materials were deposited by ALD/MLD. The thickness, crystallinity, and composition of thin film samples were analyzed. Gas separation properties of these thin films were measured in two different atmospheres. The goal was to find suitable material for the separation process or to make suggestions for further research, based on these results.

Polyelectrolytes are promising electronically insulating layers for low-voltage organic field effect transistors. However, the polyelectrolyte–semiconductor interface is difficult to manufacture due to challenges in wettability. We introduce an amphiphilic semiconducting copolymer which, when spread as a thin film, can change its surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic upon exposure to water. This peculiar wettability is exploited in the fabrication of polyelectrolyte-gated field-effect transistors operating below 0.5 V. The prepared amphiphilic semiconducting copolymer is based on a hydrophobic regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) covalently linked to a hydrophilic poly(sulfonated)-based random block. Such a copolymer is obtained in a three-step strategy combining Grignard metathesis (GRIM), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) processes, and a postmodification method. The structure of the diblock copolymer was characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC).

We investigate the possibility to maintain an electric polarization in an organic bilayer via ion trapping, i.e., without any external bias. In the cryptand-polyanion bilayer, ions of specific size can be strongly coordinated with organic macrocyclic molecules. Cations move from the polyanion layer to the cryptand layer upon applying a bias and are trapped in this layer. As a result, the voltage dependence of the polarization displays a hysteresis. The bilayer is then advantageously used as an electronic insulating layer in an organic field effect transistor. A hybrid manufacturing approach for organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) on flexible substrates is reported. The technology is based on conventional and digital printing (screen and inkjet printing), laser processing, and post-press technologies. A careful selection of the conductive, dielectric, and semiconductor materials with respect to their optical properties enables a self-aligning pattern formation which results in a significant reduction of the usual registration problems during manufacturing. For the prototype OECTs, based on this technology, on/off ratios up to 600 and switching times of 100 milliseconds at gate voltages in the range of 1 V were obtained.

The dimensionality of charge transport in an organic electrochemical transistor depends on the degree of advancement of the electrochemical half-reaction at the organic semiconductor/electrolyte interface. Työn tarkoituksena oli valmistaa polymeerinen dielektrinen peili, joka reagoi ulkoiseen ärsykkeeseen. Dielektriset peilit ovat kalvoja, jotka heijastavat voimakkaasti tietyillä valon aallonpituuksilla. Niitä käytetään runsaasti teollisuudessa ja erityisesti optiikassa. Lohkopolymeerien itsejärjestymisen avulla voidaan saada aikaan jaksollisia rakenteita, mutta tavallisesti lohkopolymeerien muodostamat rakenteet eivät ole tarpeeksi pitkiä, jotta ne soveltuisivat näkyvän valon dielektristen peilien valmistamiseen. Periodisisuutta voidaan kasvattaa kompleksoimalla pinta-aktiivisia molekyylejä lohkopolymeeriin, jolloin polymeerin konformaatio suoristuu, tai kasvattamalla rakennetta lisäämällä kompleksiin pienen molekyylipainon homopolymeeriä. Työssä yhdistettiin näitä molempia tekniikoita. Atsobentseenit voivat fotoisomeroitua eli vaihtaa konformaatiota, kun niitä valaistaan sopivan aallonpituuden valolla. Atsobentseenien avulla on aiemmin luotu materiaaleja jotka reagoivat ulkoisiin ärsykkeisiin monilla tavoilla. Hypoteesimme mukaan itsejärjestyneen lohkopolymeerirakenteen jaksollisuutta, rakennetta tai taitekerrointa voidaan muuttaa fotoisomeroimalla siihen lisättyjä atsobentseenimolekyylejä. Jos lohkopolymeeri muodostaa dielektrisen peilin, voidaan peilin heijastamaa aallonpituutta muuttaa fotoisomerisaation avulla. Tässä työssä valmistettiin joukko näytteitä, jotka karakterisoitiin pienen kulman röntgensironnan, läpivalaisuelektronimikroskopian sekä UV-Vis spektroskopian avulla. Fotoisomerisaation tutkimista varten yhdistettiin UV-alueen diodilaser UV-Vis spektrofotometriin. Onnistuimme valmistamaan useita polymeerisiä dielektrisiä peilejä, joiden väriä pystyttiin muuttamaan lisätyn homopolymeerin määrää säätelemällä. Atsobentseenin fotoisomerisaatiota tutkittiin UV-Vis spektrofotometrillä, jonka heijastusyksikön sisään rakennettiin fotoisomerointilaitteisto. Large amplitude oscillatory shear flow (LAOS) was employed in order to macroscopically align the locally ordered ionically self-assembled (ISA) materials. In our experiments, we used one oligomeric compound, ionic ally self-assembled perylene-surfactant complex, and three polymeric compounds, ionic ally self-assembled polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes with different surfactants. Simple rheological measurements were conducted in order to reveal the most suitable parameters for the shear-alignment of the studied materials. The morphological investigations were performed in-situ with small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. It turned out to be very difficult to align the studied materials by inducing oscillatory shear flow. It was furthermore found that one of the studied polymeric compounds was not suitable for the rheological measurements. When the temperature was suitable for the rheological measurements, we observed that the colour had changed from transparent to brown implying that the material began to degrade. For the other studied polymeric materials the rheological data showed that we had found suitable parameters for extending the order from the local to global length scale but the simultaneously obtained scattering patterns showed hardly any change as a function of time. This could be because of the high molecular weight of the polyelectrolytes used in these complexes. However, the perylene-surfactant complex showed moderate increase in the alignment during the oscillatory shear. The behaviour of the rheological variables as a function of time was characteristic for an aligned system. In addition, the simultaneously obtained scattering patterns were in agreement with this interpretation., Lokaalisti itsejärjestäytyneitä materiaaleja voidaan sopivissa olosuhteissa orientoida makroskooppisesti suuren amplitudin oskilloivaa virtauskenttää hyväksikäyttäen. Tässä työssä tutkittiin erityisesti ionisesti itsejärjestäytyneiden materiaalien rakenteita oskilloivassa virtauskentässä ja pyrittiin löytämään mielekkäät parametrit makroskooppisen rakenteen syntymiseen. Kokeissamme käytettiin yhtä oligomeeristä yhdistettä, ionisesti itsejärjestäytynyttä peryleeni-surfaktantti kompleksia, ja kolmea polymeerimateriaalia, ionisesti itsejärjestäytyneitä polyelektrolyytti-surfaktantti komplekseja erilaisilla surfaktanteilla. Virtauskentän synnyttämiä morfologioita tutkittiin samanaikaisesti pienen kulman röntgensironnalla yhteiseurooppalaisessa synkrotronikeskuksessa (ESRF, Grenoble, Ranska). Tutkittavien materiaalien orientointi oskilloivan virtauskentän avulla osoittautui erittäin hankalaksi. Lisäksi havaittiin, että yksi tutkituista polymeerimateriaaleista ei ollut suotuisa edes reologisiin mittauksiin. Kun lämpötila reologisten mittausten suorittamiseen oli mielekäs, materiaalin varin havaittiin muuttuvan läpinäkyvästä ruskeaksi, mikä on merkki materiaalin rakenteiden hajoamisesta. Muiden polymeerinäytteiden osalta reologiset mittaustulokset osoittivat merkkejä lokaalin rakenteen ulottumisesta globaaliin mittaskaalaan, mutta samanaikaisesti mitatut sirontakuviot eivät osoittaneet juurikaan muutosta ajan funktiona. Tämä saattaa johtua kompleksien synteeseissä käytetystä polyelektrolyytin korkeasta molekyylipainosta. Peryleenisurfaktantti-kompleksin osalta sekä reologiset mittaustulokset että sirontakuviot osoittivat kohtalaista oskilloivan virtauskentän synnyttämää orientaation kasvua. Reologisten parametrien aikakäyttäytyminen oli hyvin tyypillistä järjestyvälle systeemille, jota tukivat samanaikaisesti mitatut sirontakuviot.

The combination of electrolytes and organic semiconductors has opened up new opportunities in photonics1, electronics2 and in energy storage3. In most of these devices, the key mechanisms involve the transport of charge carriers (electrons or ions) across the organic semiconductor-electrolyte interface. The formation of an electric double layer (EDL) at this polarized interface is fuzzier than at a metal-electrolyte interface since weak intermolecular interactions in the organic solid favour the penetration of ions4. An EDL established at the organic semiconductor-electrolyte interface, defined by a sheet of electronic charge carriers and a sheet of ions, has been proposed recently as the basic mechanism for electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistors (EGOFETs)5, 6. Here, organic thin film transistors are used as a probe to investigate the organic semiconductor-electrolyte interface. We demonstrate that the capacitance value of the gate counter electrode dictates the degree of advancement7 of the electrochemical halfreaction (the extent of the reaction) at this interface. This finding unifies the mechanisms proposed for EGOFETs and organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs); and sets the ground description for an electrochemical half-reaction induced entirely by capacitive coupling.
