1. Fast M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gates in trapped-ion quantum processors with compensated carrier transition

Abstract

Carrier transition is one of the major factors hindering the high-speed implementation of M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gates in trapped-ion quantum processors. We present an approach to design laser pulse shapes for M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gate in ion chains which accounts for the effect of carrier transition on qubit-phonon dynamics. We show that the fast-oscillating carrier term effectively modifies the spin-dependent forces acting on ions, and this can be compensated by a simple nonlinear transformation of a laser pulse. Using numerical simulations for short ion chains and perturbation theory for longer chains, we demonstrate that our approach allows to reach the infidelity below $10^{-4}$ while keeping the gate duration below 100 $\mu$s.

Abstract

Variational quantum algorithms have emerged as a cornerstone of contemporary quantum algorithms research. Practical implementations of these algorithms, despite offering certain levels of robustness against systematic errors, show a decline in performance due to the presence of stochastic errors and limited coherence time. In this work, we develop a recipe for mitigating quantum gate errors for variational algorithms using zero-noise extrapolation. We introduce an experimentally amenable method to control error strength in the circuit. We utilize the fact that gate errors in a physical quantum device are distributed inhomogeneously over different qubits and qubit pairs. As a result, one can achieve different circuit error sums based on the manner in which abstract qubits in the circuit are mapped to a physical device. We find that the estimated energy in the variational approach is approximately linear with respect to the circuit error sum (CES). Consequently, a linear fit through the energy-CES data, when extrapolated to zero CES, can approximate the energy estimated by a noiseless variational algorithm. We demonstrate this numerically and investigate the applicability range of the technique.

Abstract

We propose a new method of individual single-qubit addressing of linear trapped-ion chains utilizing two ultrastable femtosecond frequency combs. For that, we suggest implementing the single-qubit gates with two counter-propagating frequency combs overlapping on the target ion and causing the AC Stark shift between the qubit levels. With analytical calculations and numerical modeling, we show that the arbitrary single-qubit rotations can be indeed realized using only laser fields propagating along the ion chain. We analyze the error sources for the proposed addressing method and prove that it allows implementing the single-qubit gates with high fidelity.

Abstract

Variational quantum algorithms involve training parameterized quantum circuits using a classical co-processor. An important variational algorithm, designed for combinatorial optimization, is the quantum approximate optimization algorithm. Realization of this algorithm on any modern quantum processor requires either embedding a problem instance into a Hamiltonian or emulating the corresponding propagator by a gate sequence. For a vast range of problem instances this is impossible due to current circuit depth and hardware limitations. Hence we adapt the variational approach -- using ion native Hamiltonians -- to create ansatze families that can prepare the ground states of more general problem Hamiltonians. We analytically determine symmetry protected classes that make certain problem instances inaccessible unless this symmetry is broken. We exhaustively search over six qubits and consider upto twenty circuit layers, demonstrating that symmetry can be broken to solve all problem instances of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Hamiltonian. Going further, we numerically demonstrate training convergence and level-wise improvement for up to twenty qubits. Specifically these findings widen the class problem instances which might be solved by ion based quantum processors. Abstract

The tunneling reaction H$_2$ + D$^-$ $\rightarrow$ HD + H$^-$ was studied in a recent experimental work at low temperatures (10, 19, and 23~K) by Endres {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 95}, 022706 (2017). An upper limit of the rate coefficient was found to be about 10$^{-18}$ cm$^3$/s. In the present study, reaction probabilities are determined using the ABC program developed by Skouteris {\it et al.}, Comput. Phys. Commun. {\bf 133}, 128 (2000). The probabilities for ortho-H$_2$ and para-H$_2$ in their ground rovibrational states are obtained numerically at collision energies above 50~meV with the total angular momentum $J$ = 0 - 15 and extrapolated below 50~meV using a WKB approach. Thermally averaged rate coefficients for ortho- and para-H$_2$ are obtained; the largest one, for ortho-H$_2$ is about $3.1\times10^{-20}$ cm$^3$/s, which agrees with the experimental results.

Abstract

We have studied the fundamental rotational relaxation and excitation collision of OH- J=0 <-> 1 with helium at different collision energies. Using state-selected photodetachment in a cryogenic ion trap, the collisional excitation of the first excited rotational state of OH- has been investigated and absolute inelastic collision rate coefficients have been extracted for collision temperatures between 20 and 35 K. The rates are compared with accurate quantum scattering calculations for three different potential energy surfaces. Good agreement is found within the experimental accuracy, but the experimental trend of increasing collision rates with temperature is only in part reflected in the calculations.

Abstract

We present a method to measure rotational transitions of molecular anions in the terahertz domain by sequential two-photon absorption. Ion excitation by bound-bound terahertz absorption is probed by absorption in the visible on a bound-free transition. The visible frequency is tuned to a state-selective photodetachment transition of the excited anions. This provides a terahertz action spectrum for just few hundred molecular ions. To demonstrate this we measure the two lowest rotational transitions, J=1<-0 and J =2<-1 of OD- anions in a cryogenic 22-pole trap. We obtain rotational transition frequencies of 598596.08(19) MHz for J=1<-0 and 1196791.57(27) MHz for J=2<-1 of OD-, in good agreement with their only previous measurement. This two-photon scheme opens up terahertz rovibrational spectroscopy for a range of molecular anions, in particular for polyatomic and cluster anions., Comment: Physical Review A (in press)

Abstract

Cold molecules are important for many applications, from fundamental precision measurements, quantum information processing, quantum-controlled chemistry, to understanding the cold interstellar medium. Molecular ions are known to be cooled efficiently in sympathetic collisions with cold atoms or ions. However, little knowledge is available on the elementary cooling steps, because the determination of quantum state-to-state collision rates at low temperature is prohibitively challenging for both experiment and theory. Here we present a method to manipulate molecular quantum states by non-resonant photodetachment. Based on this we provide absolute quantum scattering rate coefficients under full quantum state control for the rotationally inelastic collision of hydroxyl anions with helium. Experiment and quantum scattering theory show excellent agreement without adjustable parameters. Very similar rate coefficients are obtained for two different isotopes, which is linked to several quantum scattering resonances appearing at different energies. The presented method is also applicable to polyatomic systems and will help shed light on non-radiative processes in polyaromatic hydrocarbons and protein chromophores., Comment: Nature Physics (in press)

Abstract

We have studied photodetachment of the amidogen anion NH-2 as a function of photon energy near the detachment threshold. The detachment spectrum is obtained over the energy range of 6190-6355 cm-1 from the loss rate of the anions from a cryogenic radiofrequency multipole ion trap. By modeling all accessible rotational state-to-state photodetachment transitions, we can assign rotational state-specific thresholds to the measured spectrum. In thisway, we have determined the electron affinity of NH2 to be 6224 ± 1 cm-1. © 2018 Author(s). Abstract

Inthe interstellar medium (ISM) ion–molecule reactions play akey role in forming complex molecules. Since 2006, after the radioastronomicaldiscovery of the first of by now six interstellar anions, interesthas grown in understanding the formation and destruction pathwaysof negative ions in the ISM. Experiments have focused on reactionsand photodetachment of the identified negatively charged ions. Hintswere found that the reactions of CnH–with H2may proceed with a low (<10–13cm3s–1), but finiterate [Eichelberger, B.; et al. Astrophys. J.2007, 667, 1283]. Because of the high abundanceof molecular hydrogen in the ISM, a precise knowledge of the reactionrate is needed for a better understanding of the low-temperature chemistryin the ISM. A suitable tool to analyze rare reactions is the 22-poleradiofrequency ion trap. Here, we report on reaction rates for Cn–and CnH–(n= 2, 4, 6) with buffer gas temperatures of H2at 12 and 300 K. Our experiments show the absence of these reactionswith an upper limit to the rate coefficients between 4 × 10–16and 5 × 10–15cm3s–1, except for the case of C2–, which does react witha finite rate with H2at low temperatures. For the casesof C2H–and C4H–, the experimental results were confirmed with quantum chemical calculations.In addition, the possible influence of a residual reactivity on theabundance of C4H–and C6H–in the ISM were estimated on the basis of a gas-phasechemical model based on the KIDA database. Abstract

Molecular spectroscopy is involved in the studies of fundamental physical and chemical processes as well as in technical applications. 22-pole radio frequency ion traps provide a suitable environment for these studies. Their large almost field free region allows efficient translational and internal cooling of different molecules by buffer gas. In the first part of this thesis we analyze loss mechanisms of ions in these traps. Experimental data shows good agreement with our simulations and will be useful for planning future experiments and new trap designs. The main part of the thesis focuses on spectroscopic studies of NH2-. The molecule is particularly interesting for astronomers [Persson2014] and has a direct relation to the nitrogen chemical network. Furthermore, the molecule belongs to the class of asymmetric top molecules and appears in two nuclear spin forms, ortho and para, which is very interesting from a fundamental point of few. Until recently, NH2- lacked high resolution spectroscopic data. The only available rotational constants were known from infrared spectroscopy [Tack1986] and contain significant uncertainties on the order of 100 MHz, thus prohibiting the prediction of high resolution rotational spectra. One of the most important characteristics of negative ions — the binding energy of the excess electron (the electron affinity of NH2 ) was known with an uncertainty of 40 cm−1 for NH2-. This uncertainty was reduced in this work by photodetachment spectroscopy near threshold. The analysis of the spectra allowed an assignment of the electron affinity of NH2 with a 40 fold improvement in accuracy. We have also measured the rotational temperature of the anions. Good agreement with the theoretically predicted exponent factors for the Wigner threshold law was observed. Furthermore, photodetachment was used in experiments on rotational transitions of NH2− and in the study of the ortho to para dynamics. These rates are in turn used to compute the state population evolution in the trap for both species, once photodetachment by a laser is initiated in the trap. The present work shows results for the combined losses of both species after the photodetachment laser is switched on and analyzes the differences of loss kinetics between the two hyperfine isomers.
