Abstract

We present the first compelling evidence of shock-heated molecular clouds associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1, 3-2) and $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1) line emission data taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, we derived the H$_2$ number density and kinetic temperature of eight $^{13}$CO-detected clouds using the large velocity gradient approximation at a resolution of 3.5$''$ (~0.8 pc at the LMC distance). The physical properties of the clouds are divided into two categories: three of them near the shock front show the highest temperatures of ~50 K with densities of ~500-700 cm$^{-3}$, while other clouds slightly distant from the SNR have moderate temperatures of ~20 K with densities of ~800-1300 cm$^{-3}$. The former clouds were heated by supernova shocks, but the latter were dominantly affected by the cosmic-ray heating. These findings are consistent with the efficient production of X-ray recombining plasma in N49 due to thermal conduction between the cold clouds and hot plasma. We also find that the gas pressure is roughly constant except for the three shock-engulfed clouds inside or on the SNR shell, suggesting that almost no clouds have evaporated within the short SNR age of ~4800 yr. Abstract

It is well-known that the higher policyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) abundance, lower black hole mass, higher accretion rate and lower luminosities are among the major characteristics of Narrow-Line Seyfert galaxies (NLS1), when they are compared to Broad line Seyfert galaxies (BLS1). NLS1s may be normal Seyfert galaxies at an early stage of evolution, their black holes may still be growing and/or they could be special for some other reason. In this work we discuss the findings that NLS1s have most of line and continuum luminosities correlated with FWHM(H$\beta$), which may be the trace of their rapid black hole mass grow. BLS1 do not show such trends. Abstract

N49 (LHA 120-N49) is a bright X-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2), HI, and 1.4 GHz radio-continuum observations of the SNR N49 using Mopra, ASTE, ALMA, and ATCA. We have newly identified three HI clouds using ATCA with an angular resolution of ~20": one associated with the SNR and the others located in front of the SNR. Both the CO and HI clouds in the velocity range from 280-291 km s$^{-1}$ are spatially correlated with both the soft X-rays (0.2-1.2 keV) and the hard X-rays (2.0-7.0 keV) of N49 on a ~10 pc scale. CO 3-2/1-0 intensity ratios indicate higher values of the CO cloud toward the SNR shell with an angular resolution of ~45", and thus a strong interaction was suggested. Using the ALMA, we have spatially resolved CO clumps embedded within or along the southeastern rim of N49 with an angular resolution of ~3''. Three of the CO clumps are rim-brightened on a 0.7-2 pc scale in both hard X-rays and the radio continuum$:$ this provides further evidence for dynamical interactions between the CO clumps and the SNR shock wave. The enhancement of the radio synchrotron radiation can be understood in terms of magnetic-field amplification around the CO clumps via a shock-cloud interaction. We also present a possible scenario in which the recombining plasma that dominates the hard X-rays from N49 was formed via thermal conduction between the SNR shock waves and the cold$/$dense molecular clumps., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Abstract

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are one of the most luminous objects in the Universe, emitting powerful continuum and line emission across all wavelength bands. They represent an important link in the investigations of the galaxy evolution and cosmology. The resolving of the AGN inner structure is still a difficult task with current instruments, therefore the spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry are crucial tools to investigate these objects and their components, such as the properties of the supermassive black hole, the broad line region, and the dusty torus. Abstract

Supernova (SN) explosions are crucial engines driving the evolution of galaxies by shock heating gas, increasing the metallicity, creating dust, and accelerating energetic particles. In 2012 we used the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array to observe SN 1987A, one of the best-observed supernovae since the invention of the telescope. We present spatially resolved images at 450um, 870um, 1.4mm, and 2.8mm, an important transition wavelength range. Longer wavelength emission is dominated by synchrotron radiation from shock-accelerated particles, shorter wavelengths by emission from the largest mass of dust measured in a supernova remnant (>0.2Msun). For the first time we show unambiguously that this dust has formed in the inner ejecta (the cold remnants of the exploded star's core). The dust emission is concentrated to the center of the remnant, so the dust has not yet been affected by the shocks. Abstract

We report spectroscopic and imaging observations of rotational transitions of cold CO and SiO in the ejecta of SN1987A, the first such emission detected in a supernova remnant. In addition to line luminosities for the CO J=1-0, 2-1, 6-5, and 7-6 transitions, we present upper limits for all other transitions up to J=13-12, collectively measured from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX), and the Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE). Simple models show the lines are emitted from at least 0.01 solar masses of CO at a temperature > 14 K, confined within at most 35% of a spherical volume expanding at ~ 2000 km/s. Moreover, we locate the emission within 1'' of the central debris. These observations, along with a partial observation of SiO, confirm the presence of cold molecular gas within supernova remnants and provide insight into the physical conditions and chemical processes in the ejecta. Abstract

We report far-infrared and submillimeter observations of Supernova 1987A, the star that exploded on February 23, 1987 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy located 160,000 lightyears away. The observations reveal the presence of a population of cold dust grains radiating with a temperature of ~17-23 K at a rate of about 220 solar luminosity. The intensity and spectral energy distribution of the emission suggests a dust mass of ~0.4-0.7 solar mass. The radiation must originate from the SN ejecta and requires the efficient precipitation of all refractory material into dust. Our observations imply that supernovae can produce the large dust masses detected in young galaxies at very high redshifts., Comment: This is the author's version of the work. Abstract

The differences between Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and Broad Line AGNs (BLAGNs) are not completely understood; it is thought that they may have different inclinations and/or physical characteristics. The FWHM(H β)–luminosities correlations are found for NLS1s and their origin is the matter of debate. Here we investigated the spectroscopic parameters and their correlations considering a dusty, cone model of AGN. We apply a simple conical dust distribution (spreading out of broad line region, BLR), assuming that the observed surface of the model is in a good correlation with MIR emission. The dusty cone model in combination with a BLR provides the possibility to estimate luminosity dependence on the cone inclination. The FWHM(H β)–luminosities correlations obtained from model in comparison with observational data show similarities which may indicate the influence of AGN inclination and structure to this correlation. An alternative explanation for FWHM(H β)–luminosities correlations is the selection effect by the black hole mass. These FWHM(H β)–luminosities correlations may be related to the starburst in AGNs, as well. The distinction between spectral properties of the NLS1s and BLAGNs could be caused by multiple effects: beside physical differences between NLS1s and BLAGNs (NLS1s have lighter black hole mass than BLAGNs), inclination of the conical AGN geometry may have important role as well, where NLS1s may be seen in lower inclination angles. Abstract

The amount of eroded material in the Republic of Serbia has decreased in the last few decades. The aim of this research is to analyse changes in soil erosion intensity in the Rasina watershed from 1971-2011, caused by factors including changes in land-use, the population and number of households, migrations, and erosion control works. Due to changes in the intensity of erosion processes, the annual gross erosion rate in the study area decreased by 116,140.2 m(3) year(-1), while the sediment yield decreased by 52,727.2 m(3) year(-1). The value of the erosion coefficient was reduced from Z = 0.39 in 1971 to Z = 0.30 in 2011. In this 40-year period, there were no significant changes in natural conditions, and the anthropogenic influences were responsible for the reduced erosion intensity. In the Rasina watershed, almost 8,500 ha upstream from "Celije" dam were treated by bioengineering works. Since 1961, a decrease in the population was typical for all of the valley and mountain settlements in the Rasina watershed. The percentage of the population engaged in agriculture also decreased during this period, as did the general activity of the population. The analysis shows that the most significant reduction in livestock occurred in the mountain region, which has the best conditions for animal husbandry, followed by the hill region, and finally, the valley region. These results are the basis for water management projects, soil and environmental protection, spatial planning, agriculture, and other human activities.

Abstract

The Magellanic Clouds are a stepping stone from the overwhelming detail of the Milky Way in which we are immersed, to the global characteristics of galaxies both in the nearby and distant universe. They are interacting, gas-rich dwarf galaxies of sub-solar metallicity, not unlike the building blocks that assembled the large galaxies that dominate groups and clusters, and representative of the conditions at the height of cosmic star formation. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) can make huge strides in understanding galactic metabolism and the ecological processes that govern star formation, by observations of the Magellanic Clouds and other, nearby Magellanic-type irregular galaxies. Two programmes with SKA Pathfinders attempt to pave the way: the approved Galactic ASKAP Spectral Line Survey (GASKAP) includes a deep survey in H I and OH of the Magellanic Clouds, whilst MagiKAT is proposed to perform more detailed studies of selected regions within the Magellanic Clouds - also including Faraday rotation measurements and observations at higher frequencies. These surveys also close the gap with the revolutionizing surveys at far-IR wavelengths with the Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory.

Abstract

This paper explores predicting early signals of business failure using modern models for bankruptcy prediction. It reviews how continuous operations enhance market value, strengthening competitiveness and reputation among stakeholders. The study involves medium and large companies in the Montenegrin market from 2015 to 2020, comprising 30 bankrupt and 70 financially stable firms. Logistic regression is also employed to create a logit model for early detection of bankruptcy signals in companies. This research establishes the empirical validity of modern models in predicting business failure in the Montenegrin market, particularly through logistic regression. Significant indicators, such as the Degree of Indebtedness (DI) and turnover ratio of business assets (TR), exhibit strong predictive power with a p-value less than 0.001 according to Likelihood ratio tests. The paper underscores the potential benefits of bankruptcy prediction for both internal and external stakeholders, especially investors, in enhancing the competitiveness of Montenegro's large and medium-sized companies. Notably, the research contributes by bridging the gap between theory and practice in Montenegro, as bankruptcy prediction models have not been extensively applied in the market. The authors suggest the possible applicability of the created logit model to neighboring countries with similar economic development levels. In that sense, the concept of predicting bankruptcy is positioned as integral to corporate strategy, impacting the overall reduction of bankruptcies. The paper concludes by highlighting its role as a foundation for future research, addressing the literature gap in the application of bankruptcy prediction models in Montenegro. 22. Potential Elevation Shift of the European Beech Stands ( Fagus sylvatica L.) in Serbia.

Abstract

According to climate projection models, the global temperature is expected to rise by at least 1.5°C by the end of this century. According to some studies the expected rise in Serbia is even higher. Global warming may result in creating new areas for forest growth. Although creating new forests would be a positive outcome in some areas, global warming can cause negative impacts in other areas, and this can lead to forest loss and the shift of geographical ranges, or even extinction, of plant species. The European beech is the dominant forest tree species in Serbia, featuring high ecological importance and economic value. In mixed or pure stands, beech forests cover approximately 660,400 ha, accounting for 29.3% of the total Serbian forest area. In the present study, the effects of climate change on the distribution of the European beech stands in Serbia, with an emphasis on their elevation shifts, were examined using species distribution models (SDMs). Data for the present tree cover in Serbia, climate projections, and environmental data were used for model building. The models were first tested against present inventory data. In these tests, the models were found to provide accurate projections, as shown by their true skills statistics (TSS) values ranging from 0.652 to 0.736 and area under the curve (AUC) values ranging from 0.868 to 0.937. The potential distribution patterns predicted by the models indicate that the European beech elevational distribution in Serbia would decrease, exhibiting a significant upward shift in elevation during the first part of this century. Current beech stand locations could be changed, and other areas at higher elevations may be more suitable for beech growth. After 2071, European beech stands at elevations below 500 m would be even smaller. This change is caused by temperature rise and occurrence of climate extremes. However, on the highest elevations, further upward shift of the species is not expected.

Abstract

Intraoperative bradycardia (IOB) is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias observed in clinical anaesthetic practice. Controlled hypotension, as a strategy of lowering patient's blood pressure during anesthesia has been practiced for decades in head and neck surgery. The aim of our study was to determine the incidence and the risk factors for intraoperative bradycardia in maxillofacial, ear, nose and throat surgery, as well as to determine whether controlled hypotension affects the occurrence of IOB. The retrospective study included 2304 patients who underwent maxillofacial, ear, nose or throat surgery. We studied the influence of: sex, age, comorbidity, type of surgery, duration of anesthesia and controlled hypotension on the occurrence of IOB. IOB was registered in 473 patients (20.5%). Patients with controlled hypotension had IOB significantly more often than patients without controlled hypotension (33.9 vs 15.1%) (p = 0.000). The significant predictors of IOB were: age (OR = 1.158; 95% CI = 1.068-1.256; p = 0.000), sex (OR = 0.786; 95% CI = 0.623-0.993; p = 0.043), ischemic heart disease (OR = 2.016; 95% CI = 1.182-3.441; p = 0.010); ear surgery (OR = 1.593; 95% CI = 1.232-2.060; p = 0.000), anesthesia duration, (OR = 1.006; 95% CI = 1.004-1.007; p = 0.000) and controlled hypotension (OR = 2.204; 95% CI = 1.761-2.758; p = 0.000). IOB is common in maxillofacial, ear, nose and throat surgery, particularly in male, older age and patients with ishemic heart disease. The ear surgery, longer anesthesia duration and controlled hypotension raise the risk for occurrence of IOB.

Abstract

The hyomental distance ratio (HMDR) is the ratio between the hyomental distance (HMD) (the distance between the hyoid bone and the tip of the chin) at the extreme of head extension (HMDe) and the one in the neutral position (HMDn). The objective of the study was to examine the predictive value, sensitivity, and specificity of HMDe, HMDn, and HMDR in predicting difficult endotracheal intubation (DI). A prospective study included 262 patients that underwent elective surgical operations. The following parameters were observed as possible predictors of DI: HMDR, HMDe, HMDn, Mallampati score, and body mass index (BMI). The cut-off points for the DI predictors were HMDe <5.3 cm, HMDn ≤5.5 cm, and HMDR ≤1.2. The assessment that DI existed was made by the anesthesiologist while performing laryngoscopy by applying the Cormack-Lehane classification. DI was present in 13 patients (5%). No significant difference was observed in the frequency of DI with regard to the sex, age, and BMI of the patients. Our research indicated HMDR as the best predictor of DI with a sensitivity of 95.6% and specificity of 69.2%. HMDR can be used in the everyday work of anesthesiologists because HMDR values ≤1.2 may reliably predict DI.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adults with spinal cord injury (SCI), muscular dystrophy (MD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and cerebral palsy (CP)., Methods: This is a multicenter, community-based, cross-sectional study of adults diagnosed with CP (94), MD (99), MS (98), SCI (99), and healthy adults (105). The WHOQOL-BREF and WHOQOL-DIS questionnaire were used., Results: Significant differences in physical functioning between adults with CP and SCI and adults with MS (p = 0.003 and p < 0.001, respectively), as well as between adults with SCI and MD (p = 0.001) were found. Univariate tests revealed significant psychological functioning differences between adults with SCI and MD (p = 0.02) and SCI and MS (p = 0.001). There was a significant difference in physical functioning between controls and adults with SCI (p = 0.049) and a significant difference in psychological functioning between controls and adults with MS (p = 0.039). No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in social and environmental domains., Conclusions: Physical and physiological functioning were affected to various degrees in the studied neurodisabilities, while all groups reported similar levels of functioning and well-being in social and environmental domains.
