Nutrient cycling through leaf litter consumption is an essential ecological function performed by macrodetritivorous invertebrates such as isopods and millipedes. Leaf litter consumption rates can vary greatly depending on the environment, consumer identity and litter traits, but generalizations about the effects of plant traits on macrodetritivore leaf litter consumption, assimilation and growth are not well established and are mostly indirectly inferred.We conducted a systematic search of the global literature and obtained 456 standardized measures from laboratory experiments of relative consumption (RCR), assimilation (RAR) and growth (RGR) rates of terrestrial isopods and millipedes, extracted from 56 different articles. We investigated if commonly measured leaf traits, plant functional groups, prior microbial conditioning of leaves and climatic conditions affected these rates. We obtained data on commonly measured leaf traits from the TRY global plant trait database, inferred plant functional groups from taxonomic groupings and obtained climatic data from information reported within articles.RCR, RAR and RGR varied greatly among macrodetritivore and plant species, but overall, there were no differences between isopods and millipedes. Microbial conditioning of litter greatly increased RCR. Plant functional group was an important predictor of RCR, with eudicot trees and forbs being consumed in greater quantities than magnoliid trees and grasses. Fresh leaf N:P ratio had a positive effect on RAR, and leaf N and C:N ratio had positive and negative effects on RGR, respectively, while climatic variables had weak effects on the three rates.Our work shows that plant traits (both those associated with plant functional groups and commonly measured leaf traits) exert strong effects on resource processing rates by terrestrial macrodetritivores. Further, prior microbial conditioning of leaf litter has a large and globally consistent positive effect on macrodetritivore litter consumption, suggesting that they may consume little, if any, freshly senesced leaf material when microbially conditioned litter is available. Our results suggest that, where extremes of temperature or precipitation do not occur, variables reflective of food quality (leaf traits and microbe conditioning) are more important drivers of macrodetritivore leaf litter consumption than are extrinsic climatic variables. Summary: Differences in demographic and environmental niches facilitate plant species coexistence in tropical forests. However, the adaptations that enable species to achieve higher demographic rates (e.g. growth or survival) or occupy unique environmental niches (e.g. waterlogged conditions) remain poorly understood. Anatomical traits may better predict plant environmental and demographic strategies because they are direct measurements of structures involved in these adaptations.We collected 18 leaf and twig traits from 29 tree species in a tropical freshwater swamp forest in Singapore. We estimated demographic parameters of the 29 species from growth and survival models, and degree of association toward swamp habitats. We examined pairwise trait–trait, trait–demography and trait–environment links while controlling for phylogeny.Leaf and twig anatomical traits were better predictors of all demographic parameters than other commonly measured leaf and wood traits. Plants with wider vessels had faster growth rates but lower survival rates. Leaf and spongy mesophyll thickness predicted swamp association.These findings demonstrate the utility of anatomical traits as indicators of plant hydraulic strategies and their links to growth–mortality trade‐offs and waterlogging stress tolerance that underlie species coexistence mechanisms in tropical forest trees. Functional trait ecology has the potential to provide generalizable and mechanistic predictions of ecosystem function from data of species distributions and traits. The traits that are selected should both respond to environmental factors and influence ecosystem functioning. Invertebrate mouthpart traits fulfill these criteria, but are seldom collected, lack standardized measurement protocols, and have infrequently been investigated in response to environmental factors. We surveyed isopod species that consume plant detritus, and tree communities in 58 plots across primary and secondary forests in Singapore. We measured body dimensions (body size traits), pereopod and antennae lengths (locomotory traits), dimensions of mandible structures (morphological mouthpart traits), and mechanical advantages generated by mandible shape (mechanical mouthpart traits) for six isopod species found in these plots and investigated if these traits respond to changes in tree community composition, tree diversity, and forest structure. Morphological mouthpart traits responded to a tree compositional gradient reflecting forest recovery degree. Mouthpart features associated with greater consumption of litter (broader but less serrated/rugose lacinia mobilis [an important cutting and chewing structure on the mandible]) were most prevalent in abandoned plantation and young secondary forests containing disturbance-associated tree species. Feeding strategies associated with fungi grazing (narrower and more serrated/rugose lacinia mobilis) were most prevalent in late secondary forests containing later successional tree species. Since morphological mouthpart traits likely also predict consumption and excretion rates of isopods, these traits advance our understanding of environment–trait–ecosystem functioning relationships across contrasting tropical forest plots that vary in composition, disturbance history, and post-disturbance recovery. Functional traits offer generalizability to the prediction of ecosystem processes such as production, and community-weighted mean trait values are increasingly used for such predictions. However, the underlying causal direction between traits and ecosystem processes are often indirect and sometimes even tenuous. In this study, we aimed to uncover underlying causal mechanisms between traits, habitat adaptation and canopy productivity. We used canopy production data estimated from leaf litter traps, and trait and habitat association data obtained from 40 permanent vegetation plots in the Nee Soon catchment in Singapore, which contains a heterogeneous mix of freshwater swamp and dry-land tropical forests. Mean canopy production across the catchment was estimated to be 768 g m−2 year−1, which is similar to other tropical dry-land forests in the region. Biweekly per-basal-area canopy production was found to be consistently lower in swamp than non-swamp plots, and positively correlated with monthly mean temperature. Structural equation models fitted to data of canopy production, leaf traits, plot type (swamp versus non-swamp), basal areas and habitat adaptations of 69 tree species–plot combinations suggested that tree species possessing leaf traits associated with more conservative resource acquisition strategies, viz. low specific leaf area, high leaf C:N ratio, and thicker leaves, are better adapted to stressful, waterlogged swamp conditions, but that this adaptation also reduces canopy—and likely total—net primary productivity. These observations suggest that the stressful conditions of waterlogged, anoxic swamp habitats significantly reduce the rate at which nutrients are cycled by communities found in such environments. Positive species interactions are ubiquitous in natural communities, but the mechanisms through which they operate are poorly understood. One proposed mechanism is resource conversion – the conversion by a benefactor species of a resource from a resource state that is inaccessible to a potential beneficiary species into a resource state that is accessible. Such conversion often occurs as a byproduct of resource consumption, and sometimes in exchange for non‐resource benefits to the benefactor species. At least five known classes of interactions, including both facilitative and mutualistic ones, may be classified as resource conversion interactions. We formulated a generalizable mathematical model for resource conversion interactions and examined two model variants that represent processing chain and nurse plant interactions. We examined the conditions under which these conformed to the stress‐gradient hypothesis (SGH), which predicts increased interaction benefits in more stressful environments. These yielded four key insights: 1) resource conversion interactions can be positive (towards the resource recipient) only when facilitator‐mediated resource conversion is more efficient than the baseline, spontaneous, facilitator‐independent resource conversion; 2) the sign of resource conversion interaction outcomes never switches (e.g. from net positive to net negative) with changing levels of resource availability, when all other parameters are kept constant; 3) processing chain interactions at equilibrium can never be positive in a manner that conforms to the SGH; 4) nurse plant interactions can be positive and conform to the SGH, although the manner in which they do depends largely on how resource stress is defined, and the environmental supply rate of surface soil moisture. The first two insights are likely to be generalizable across all resource conversion interactions. The general agreement of the model with empirical studies suggest that resource conversion is the mechanism underlying the aforementioned interactions, and an ecologically meaningful way of classifying these previously unassociated positive species interactions. The stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH) predicts that the strength and frequency of facilitative interactions increase monotonically with increasing environmental stress, but some empirical studies have found this decrease at extreme stress levels, suggesting a hump-shaped SGH instead. However, empirical studies of the SGH are often hindered by confounding resource and non-resource stress gradients. Nepenthes pitcher plants trap animal prey using modified-leaf pitfall traps which are also inhabited by organisms known as inquilines. Inquilines may assist pitchers in the digestion of trapped prey. This interaction is known as a digestive mutualism and is both mutualistic and facilitative by definition. Inquiline species may also facilitate each other via processing chain commensalisms. We used in vitro experiments to examine the isolated effect of resource stress on the outcomes of two facilitative interactions: (i) digestive mutualism—facilitation of pitcher nutrient sequestration by two inquiline dipteran larvae, culicids and phorids; (ii) processing chain commensalism—facilitation between these two inquiline taxa. The net nutritional benefit of phorids on N. gracilis was found to conform more to a monotonic rather than hump-shaped SGH model. However, the effect of culicids on N. gracilis and the effects of culicids and phorids on each other were weak. These findings provide compelling evidence that changes in facilitation along an isolated resource stress gradient conform to the predictions of the monotonic SGH model rather than that of the revised hump-shaped model, and highlight the importance of isolating stress gradients in empirical tests of the SGH. Premise of research. The aspartate protease nepenthesin is the primary constituent of pitcher fluids in the pitcher plant genus Nepenthes and is responsible for the hydrolysis of prey protein. Nepenthes pitchers are inhabited by many inquiline species, such as microbes and dipteran larvae, which have been shown to facilitate nitrogen sequestration in pitchers. Inquiline digestive mutualists and fluid proteases may be functionally redundant, but the effect of inquiline presence—or other extrinsic environmental factors—on pitcher protease secretion has never been investigated before. The aims of this study were thus to identify intrinsic and extrinsic factors that predict the in situ proteolytic activity of Nepenthes pitcher fluids. Methodology. We collected the fluids of 129 Nepenthes gracilis pitchers at six different localities in Singapore. Proteolytic activities of the fluids were determined using a fluorometric protease detection test. Environmental and biotic variables hypothesized to affect nepenthesin secretion rates were also measured at each sampled pitcher. Correlations between fluid proteolytic activity and environmental and biotic variables were then examined using linear mixed effects models. Pivotal results. Fluid proteolytic activity was correlated with fluid turbidity, presence of inquiline dipteran larvae, pitcher size, pitcher age, and amount of prey trapped by pitchers. Importantly, pitchers that were inhabited by dipteran larvae had significantly lower fluid proteolytic activity than those that were not, although this effect was absent in pitchers that also had high concentrations of fluid microbes. Conclusions. Our findings confirm that in situ proteolytic activity of Nepenthes pitcher fluids varies significantly with extrinsic factors and suggest that nepenthesin secretion may be subject to multiple regulation mechanisms. The mutualistic activity of dipteran larvae may allow Nepenthes pitcher plants to reduce the secretion of metabolically costly enzymes and obtain a greater proportion of their nitrogen through the dipteran larvae–facilitated ammonium pathway. Nutritional mutualisms are one of the three major categories of mutualisms and involve the provision of limiting nutrients (resources) to one species by another. It was recently shown in laboratory experiments that two species of pitcher‐dwelling crab spiders (Thomisidae), Thomisus nepenthiphilus and Misumenops nepenthicola, increased capture rates of flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) for their host, Nepenthes gracilis. The spiders ambushed pitcher‐visiting flesh flies and dropped their carcasses into pitchers after consuming them. The consumption of shared prey‐resources by crab spiders and pitcher plants presents the possibility of parasitism between them. However, ecologically generalizable mechanisms that predict the context‐dependent outcomes of such mutualisms are not known.The effectiveness framework (mutualism effectiveness = quality × quantity) is useful for examining the total effect of mutualisms, but its quality component can be difficult to define. We identify the crab spider–pitcher plant interaction as a type of resource conversion mutualism and propose that the quality component in such interactions is the amount of the underlying resource contained in each unit of resource processed. We then used the crab spider–pitcher plant interaction to test the hypothesis that resource conversion mutualisms are more beneficial to the nutrient recipient when operating through high‐quality resources (i.e., large prey, in this interaction).We sampled the prey and inquilines of 107 N. gracilis upper pitches in situ and analysed the differences between pitchers that were inhabited or uninhabited by crab spiders, and the differences between nutritional contents of prey that were consumed by crab spiders or not.Pitchers inhabited by T. nepenthiphilus contained higher numbers of several prey taxa, many of which were flying insects. Consumption by T. nepenthiphilus reduced the nutrient contents in all prey examined. Overall, T. nepenthiphilus‐assisted prey capture is likely to result in a net nutrient gain for N. gracilis that is proportional to the size of prey consumed by T. nepenthiphilus.Our results suggest that resource conversion mutualisms are more likely to operate through high‐quality resources, since the nutrient‐processing species necessarily reduces the quality of the resource it processes while increasing its availability to the nutrient recipient species. The study confirms the existence of mutualism between a pitcher plant and a crab spider species living in it. It also reveals a generalizable trend between resource quality and total mutualistic effect in resource conversion mutualisms, a subcategory of nutritional mutualisms which is described in this study. Background: According to modern coexistence theory, ecologically similar species can coexist if fitness differences between them are small, or niche differences between them are large. However, these predictions have not been tested extensively in real systems and are difficult to examine in traits-based studies. Aims: The aim of our study was, by using the carnivorous pitcher plant genus Nepenthes as a model system, to examine (1) species growth ranks as a proxy for fitness; (2) modern coexistence theory at a geographical scale; (3) evidence for pitcher trait-mediated resource partitioning between sympatric Nepenthes species. Methods: We used growth ranks, obtained from a survey of experienced Nepenthes nursery owners, as a proxy for fitness. Multivariate pitcher-, vegetative- or combined-trait distances, computed from morphometric-trait data from the literature were used as proxies for niche differences. Data on global Nepenthes species-pair sympatry was modelled against these fitness and niche differences. Results: Niche and growth rate differences were positively and negatively correlated with sympatry, respectively, as expected from theory. Conclusion: Our results agree with theory and suggest that fitness differences can be approximated from average species growth. Prey- and microhabitat-resource partitioning, operating through divergent pitcher and vegetative traits respectively, are likely mechanisms that stabilise the coexistence of sympatric Nepenthes species. • Processing chain commensalism (PCC) is a type of resource conversion interaction. • Long-term outcomes of PCCs are invariant to the specification of functional responses. • SGH in PCCs requires leakage of the downstream resource to occur. • These findings are likely to apply to other resource conversion-type interactions. The stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH) in ecology predicts that the strength and frequency of positive interspecific interactions, including processing chain commensalisms (PCCs), increase with environmental stress. Although observed in some empirical PCC studies, a recent theoretical study of PCCs using a consumer–resource-type model found that, given the model's assumptions, the SGH never occurs. To investigate if this is a true reflection of PCCs or merely an artefact of the model, in this study, we modified this earlier model formulation by incorporating generalized, monotonically increasing resource uptake functions in place of linear functions, and added a term to represent the spontaneous leakage of the downstream resource to the environment. Mathematical analyses of the model revealed two key insights: 1) the specific algebraic forms of the functional responses of the species in a PCC do not affect the long-term behaviour of the system; 2) the SGH can occur in a facilitative interaction only if the consumer-independent leakage rate of the downstream resource exceeds the consumer-independent input rate. The first insight shows that the outcomes of consumer–resource interactions are robust to details of the functional responses when the functional responses are monotonically increasing, while the second insight shows that the SGH is not a universal feature of positive interactions but instead holds only under a well-defined set of conditions which may vary between PCC interactions and the environmental contexts in which they take place. Summary: Decomposition and fire are major carbon pathways in many ecosystems, yet potential linkages between these processes are poorly understood. We test whether variability in decomposability and flammability across species are related to each other and to key plant functional traits in tropical swamp forests, where habitat degradation is elevating decomposition and fire regimes.Using senesced and fresh leaves of 22 swamp tree species in Singapore, we conducted an in situ decomposition experiment and a laboratory flammability experiment. We analysed 16 leaf physical and biochemical traits as predictors of decomposability and components of flammability: combustibility, ignitability and sustainability.Decomposability and flammability were largely decoupled across species, despite some shared predictive traits such as specific leaf area (SLA). Physical traits predicted that thicker leaves with a smaller SLA and volume decomposed faster, while various cation concentrations predicted flammability components, particularly ignitability.We show that flammability and decomposability of swamp forest leaves are decoupled because flammability is mostly driven by biochemical traits, while decomposition is driven by physical traits. Our approach identifies species that are slow to decompose and burn (e.g. Calophyllum tetrapterum and Xanthophyllum flavescens), which could be planted to mitigate carbon losses in tropical swamp reforestation. Tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes) are carnivorous plants that trap and digest prey using highly modified fluid-filled leaves known as pitchers. Prey are digested by plant-secreted enzymes and pitcher symbionts. Pitchers exert control over abiotic properties of the digestive fluid such as pH levels that can influence its symbionts. Here we examine natural variation in pH and dissolved mineral concentrations in three sympatric Nepenthes species, assessing correlations between fluid properties and pitcher traits. We use addition experiments to investigate differences in protein digestion/absorption rates between species. Fluid pH and dissolved mineral levels both showed distinct patterns corresponding to pitcher developmental stages in N. gracilis and N. rafflesiana, whereas N. ampullaria differs from its congeners in exhibiting far less variation in fluid pH, as well as less clear evidence of protein depletion. Using black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens [L.], Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae (BSFL) to upcycle urban solid waste into a growing medium for vegetable cultivation is a potential solution to ease cities' over-reliance on food imports and excessive waste generation. However, rapid composting by BSFL may be insufficient to remove phytotoxins from the waste and further composting may be necessary. Through a growth experiment on pak choi (Brassica rapa), this study evaluated the optimum performance of BSFL frass at three composting stages (freshly produced, composted with forced aeration and naturally composted in larval rearing chambers) in biochar-based substrate cultivation. Plants cultivated in the composted BSFL frass treatments grew larger than those in fresh frass, with 10% naturally composted BSFL frass (v/v) producing the most biomass among all treatments. A seed germination test suggested the presence of phytotoxins in the fresh frass and frass Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that the fresh frass potentially had the highest phenol concentration. In terms of greenhouse gas emission, a life cycle analysis showed that all three types of frass had a lower global warming potential compared to incineration, with the fresh frass having the lowest emission, the frass composted using forced aeration having the second lowest and the naturally composted frass, the highest emission. Therefore, further composting of BSFL frass with forced aeration would be the most feasible method considering both its compost quality and environmental impact.
