URBAN soils , *SOILS , *URBANIZATION - Abstract
Urbanization is a growing phenomenon affecting soils worldwide. Urban centers have been highlighted as hotspots for global change factors due to heightened anthropogenic activity. However, few studies have investigated the multifaceted impacts of global change factors (GCFs) acting in concert with urban soils. Thus, the objective of this study was to add GCFs in different combinations (0, 1, 2, 5, and 8 simultaneously) in three high-urbanity and three low-urbanity soils in Berlin and to evaluate their effects on soil parameters and functions. We hypothesized four potential outcomes of soil process responses to GCF exposure, Site-Specific Resistance, General Susceptibility, Low-Urbanity Resistance, and High-Urbanity Resistance. We provide evidence for the negative impacts of individual and multiple GCF application on litter decomposition, water repellency, and water-stable aggregates. Additionally, we highlight the General Susceptibility of litter decomposition to GCF exposure regardless of urbanity, as well as the Low-Urbanity Resistance of water repellency and High-Urbanity Resistance of water-stable aggregates under increased exposure to GCFs. This study expands on evidence of the growing threat of global change factors in urban settings and highlights some potential consequences regarding soil function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form symbioses with many agricultural crops and can improve plant biomass and health. The performance of the AM symbiosis is context dependent, for example, usually the inoculation of the AMF Rhizophagus irregularis benefits plant biomass, but benefits can be suppressed by high soil fertility levels. Nevertheless, the importance of many other agricultural management practices on AMF, such as fungicides application, is poorly understood. Also, pesticide regulations usually neglect a comprehensive safety testing of fungicides on AMF and lawmakers require empirical support to improve such laws. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of spraying fungicides on tomato plants and the subsequent root colonization of plants grown in natural soil containing AMF and inoculated with R. irregularis. We detected that the inoculation of R. irregularis increased the total root colonization of the control plants that did not receive fungicides and that spraying the plants with the fungicides Signum® and Topas® reduced total root colonization. The effect on specific AM fungal structures was variable according to the product. Signum® reduced the occurrence of arbuscules, while Topas® reduced the occurrence of AM hyphae in the colonized roots. Cuprozin® did not reduce total root colonization but reduced the occurrence of AM vesicles. Sampling time was also relevant. Effects were detected at 90 days, but not at 35 days. Our results show that fungicides safety should be evaluated for their effects on root colonization of crops in non-sterilized soils and at adequate sampling time.

An increasing frequency of heat events can affect key organisms related to ecosystem functions. Soil saprobic fungi have important roles in carbon and nutrient cycling in soils, and they are clearly affected by heat events. When tested individually, saprobic soil fungi showed a variety of growth responses to a series of two heat events. However, in nature, these fungi rarely grow alone. Coexistence theory predicts that diversity in the response to stressors can influence the outcome of species interactions and growth. This means that the co-cultivation of different fungi may affect their growth response to heat events. To test if recurring heat events affect fungal growth in small synthetic communities, we evaluated fungi previously known to respond to recurring heat events in experimental small communities composed of two and three species. For the fungi growing in pairs, surprisingly, most of the responses could not be predicted by how the isolates responded individually. In some cases, facilitation or increased competition was observed. For the three fungi growing together, results were also not predicted by the individual or pair responses. Both the heat events and the small communities influenced the growth of the fungi and growth properties emerged from the interactions among isolates and the heat stress. We show that not only do environmental conditions influence fungal interactions and growth rates but also that the co-cultivation of different fungi affects the fungal response to recurring heat events. These results indicate that more complex experimental designs are needed to better understand the effects of recurring heat events and climate change on soil fungi.

- Abstract
Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change., H.R.P.P., B.K-R., and the sWorm workshops were supported by the sDiv [Synthesis Centre of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig (DFG FZT 118)]. H.R.P.P., O.F. and N.E. acknowledge funding by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement no. 677232 to NE). K.S.R. and W.H.v.d.P. were supported by ERC-ADV grant 323020 to W.H.v.d.P. - Abstract
Data collated from data provided by original data collectors or from data provided within published articles. The MetaData.csv provides information on each of the original data sources, including bibliographic information about the original article and information on how many sites were sampled. The SiteData.csv gives site-level variables, such as geographic coordinates, the environmental parameters as well as site-level community metrics (species richness, total abundance and total biomass). The SppOccData.csv provides the observation level data - the occurrence, abundance and/or biomass of individual species/morpho-species/life-stage at a particular site. Not every data source contained such observation level data. Metadata information about the variables in each file are provided in the files MetaData_info.csv, SiteData_info.csv and SppOccData_info.csv, respectively. All files provided use the character encoding UTF-8, and missing values are represented by "NA"., This dataset contains key characteristics about the data described in the Data Descriptor Global data on earthworm abundance, biomass, diversity and corresponding environmental properties. - Abstract
Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.
