Search

Ca$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is a polar metal that belongs to the class of multiferroic magnetic materials. Here, tiny amounts of Fe doping in the Ru sites bring about dramatic changes in the electronic and magnetic properties and generate a complex H-T phase diagram. To date, not much is known about the ground state of such a system in the absence of magnetic field. By performing muon-spin spectroscopy (${\mu}$SR) measurements in 5% Fe-doped Ca$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals, we investigate its electronic properties at a local level. Transverse-field ${\mu}$SR results indicate a very sharp normal-to-antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 79.7(1) K, with a width of only 1 K. Zero-field ${\mu}$SR measurements in the magnetically ordered state allow us to determine the local fields B$_{i}$ at the muon implantation sites. By symmetry, muons stopping close to the RuO$_{2}$ planes detect only the weak nuclear dipolar fields, while those stopping next to apical oxygens sense magnetic fields as high as 150 mT. In remarkable agreement with the nominal Fe-doping, a $\sim$ 6% minority of the these muons feel slightly lower fields, reflecting a local magnetic frustration induced by iron ions. Finally, B$_{i}$ shows no significant changes across the metal-to-insulator transition, close to 40 K. We propose a new concept of magnetic focusing for targeting and accumulation of functionalized superparamagnetic nanoparticles in living organs through composite configurations of different permanent magnets. The proposed setups fulfill two fundamental requirements for in vivo experiments: 1) reduced size of the magnets to best focusing on small areas representing the targeted organs of mice and rats and 2) maximization of the magnetic driving force acting on the magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in blood. To this aim, several configurations of permanent magnets organized with different degrees of symmetry have been tested. The product B*grad(B) proportional to the magnetic force has been experimentally measured, over a wide area (20x20 mm^2), at a distance corresponding to the hypothetical distance of the mouse organ from the magnets. A non-symmetric configuration of mixed shape permanent magnets resulted in particularly promising to achieve the best performances for further in vivo experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

The superconducting behavior of the topological semimetal CaSn$_{3}$ was investigated by means of magnetotransport and muon spectroscopy $\mu$SR measurements, both providing strong evidence of nematic behavior. Magnetotransport detects an anisotropic upper critical field, characterized by a twofold symmetry about $C_{4}$ axis, thus breaking the rotational symmetry of the underlying cubic lattice. Transverse-field $\mu$SR data support such picture, with the muon depolarization rate depending strongly on the magnetic field direction, here applied along the [110] or [001] crystal directions. In the former case, the absence of any additional muon depolarization suggests an unconventional vortex lattice. In the latter case, a vortex lattice encompassing a sample volume of at least 52% indicates the bulk nature of CaSn$_{3}$ superconductivity. The resulting superfluid density in the (001) planes shows a gapped low-temperature behavior, with a superconducting gap value $\Delta(0)\simeq 0.61(7)$ meV. Additional zero-field $\mu$SR results indicate that the superconducting state is time-reversal-invariant. This fact and the breaking of rotational symmetry in a fully-gapped superconductor are consistent with an unconventional pairing state in a multi-dimensional representation, thus making CaSn$_{3}$ an important example of nematic superconductor., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

In this Letter we report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope analysis of Mn-substituted LaFeAsO samples, demonstrating that a static incommensurate modulated structure develops across the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, whose modulation wave-vector depends on the Mn content. The incommensurate structural distortion is likely originating from a charge-density-wave instability, a periodic modulation of the density of conduction electrons associated with a modulation of the atomic positions. Our results add a new component in the physics of Fe-based superconductors, indicating that the density wave ordering is charge-driven., Comment: To be published in the Physical Review Letters

The deliberate insertion of magnetic Mn dopants in the Fe sites of the optimally-doped SmFeAsO0.88-F0.12 iron-based superconductor can modify in a controlled way its electronic properties. The resulting phase diagram was investigated across a wide range of manganese contents (x) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy (muSR), both in zero- and in transverse fields, respectively, to probe the magnetic and the superconducting order. The pure superconducting phase (at x < 0.03) is replaced by a crossover region at intermediate Mn values (0.03 =< x < 0.08), where superconductivity coexists with static magnetic order. After completely suppressing superconductivity for x = 0.08, a further increase in Mn content reinforces the natural tendency towards antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn ions. The sharp drop of Tc and the induced magnetic order in the presence of magnetic disorder/dopants, such as Mn, are both consistent with a recent theoretical model of unconventional superconductors [M. Muon Spin Rotation ($\mu$SR) and $^{19}$F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements were performed to investigate the effect of Mn for Fe substitutions in La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors. While for $y = 0$ a very low critical concentration of Mn ($x = 0.2$%) is needed to quench superconductivity, as $y$ increases the negative chemical pressure introduced by Y for La substitution stabilizes superconductivity and for $y= 20$% it is suppressed at Mn contents an order of magnitude larger. A magnetic phase arises once superconductivity is suppressed both for $y$=0 and for $y= 20$%. Low-energy spin fluctuations give rise to a peak in $^{19}$F NMR $1/T_1$ with an onset well above the superconducting transition temperature and whose magnitude increases with $x$. Also the static magnetic correlations probed by $^{19}$F NMR linewidth measurements show a marked increase with Mn content. The disruption of superconductivity and the onset of the magnetic ground-state are discussed in the light of the proximity of LaFeAsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ to a quantum critical point., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The goal of this work is studying the evolution of thermoelectric transport across the members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1, where a metal-insulator transition driven by bandwidth change occurs, from the strongly insulating Sr2IrO4 to the metallic non Fermi liquid behavior of SrIrO3. Sr2IrO4 (n=1), Sr3Ir2O7 (n=2) and SrIrO3 (n=inf.) polycrystals are synthesized at high pressure and characterized by structural, magnetic, electric and thermoelectric transport analyses. We find a complex thermoelectric phenomenology in the three compounds. Thermal diffusion of charge carriers accounts for the Seebeck behavior of Sr2IrO4, whereas additional drag mechanisms come into play in determining the Seebeck temperature dependence of Sr3Ir2O7 and SrIrO3. These findings reveal close relationship between magnetic, electronic and thermoelectric properties, strong coupling of charge carriers with phonons and spin fluctuations as well as relevance of multiband description in these compounds., Comment: main paper + supplementary information

Among the widely studied superconducting iron-pnictide compounds belonging to the Ln1111 family (with Ln a lanthanide), a systematic investigation of the crossover region between the superconducting and the antiferromagnetic phase for the Ln = Nd case has been missing. We fill this gap by focusing on the intermediate doping regime of NdFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by means of dc-magnetometry and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. The long-range order we detect at low fluorine doping is replaced by short-range magnetic interactions at x = 0.08, where also superconductivity appears. In this case, longitudinal-field muon-spin spectroscopy experiments show clear evidence of slow magnetic fluctuations that disappear at low temperatures. This fluctuating component is ascribed to the glassy-like character of the magnetically ordered phase of NdFeAsO at intermediate fluorine doping.

We investigate Seebeck effect in REFeAsO (RE=rare earth)compounds as a function of temperature and magnetic field up to 30T. The Seebeck curves are characterized by a broad negative bump around 50K, which is sample dependent and strongly enhanced by the application of a magnetic field. A model for the temperature and field dependence of the magnon drag contribution to the Seebeck effect by antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuation is developed. It accounts for the magnitude and scaling properties of such bump feature in our experimental data. This analysis allows to extract precious information on the coupling between electrons and AFM spin fluctuations in these parent compound systems, with implications on the pairing mechanism of the related superconducting compounds.

By a systematic study of the hydrogen-doped LaFeAsO system by means of dc resistivity, dc magnetometry, and muon-spin spectroscopy we addressed the question of universality of the phase diagram of rare-earth-1111 pnictides. In many respects, the behaviour of LaFeAsO_(1-x)H_(x) resembles that of its widely studied F-doped counterpart, with H^- realizing a similar (or better) electron-doping in the LaO planes. In a x = 0.01 sample we found a long-range SDW order with T_n = 119 K, while at x = 0.05 the SDW establishes only at 38 K and, below T_c = 10 K, it coexists at a nanoscopic scale with bulk superconductivity. Unlike the abrupt M-SC transition found in the parent La-1111 compound, the presence a crossover region makes the H-doped system qualitatively similar to other Sm-, Ce-, or Nd-1111 families., Comment: to appear in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

We study normal state electrical, thermoelectrical and thermal transport in polycrystalline BiS2-based compounds, which become superconducting by F doping on the O site. In particular we explore undoped LaOBiS2 and doped LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 samples, prepared either with or without high pressure annealing, in order to evidence the roles of doping and preparation conditions. The high pressure annealed sample exhibits room temperature values of resistivity ro around 5 mohmcm, Seebeck coefficient S around -20 microV/K and thermal conductivity k around 1.5 W/Km, while the Hall resistance RH is negative at all temperatures and its value is -10-8 m3/C at low temperature. The sample prepared at ambient pressure exhibits RH positive in sign and five times larger in magnitude, and S negative in sign and slightly smaller in magnitude. These results reveal a complex multiband evolution brought about by high pressure annealing. In particular, the sign inversion and magnitude suppression of RH, indicating increased electron-type carrier density in the high pressure sample, may be closely related to previous findings about change in lattice parameters and enhancement of superconducting Tc by high pressure annealing. As for the undoped sample, it exhibits the 10 times larger resistivity, 10 times larger |S| and 10 times larger |RH| than its doped counterpart, consistently with its insulating nature. Our results point out the dramatic effect of preparation conditions in affecting charge carrier density as well as structural, band and electronic parameters in these systems., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We report on the magnetic and superconducting properties of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 by means of zero- (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin spectroscopy measurements (uSR). Contrary to previous results on iron-based superconductors, measurements in zero field demonstrate the absence of magnetically ordered phases. TF-uSR data give access to the superfluid density, which shows a marked 2D character with a dominant s-wave temperature behavior. The field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth confirms this finding and further suggests the presence of an anisotropic superconducting gap.

The appearance of static magnetism, nanoscopically coexisting with superconductivity, is shown to be a general feature of optimally electron-doped LnFe(1-x)Ru(x)AsO(1-y)F(y) superconductor (Ln - lanthanide ion) upon isovalent substitution of Fe by Ru. The magnetic ordering temperature T_N and the magnitude of the internal field display a dome-like dependence on x, peaked around x=1/4, with higher T_N values for those materials characterized by a larger z cell coordinate of As. Remarkably, the latter are also those with the highest superconducting transition temperature (T_c) for x=0. The reduction of T_c(x) is found to be significant in the x region of the phase diagram where the static magnetism develops. We provide direct experimental evidence for the identical effect of the in-plane Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ and of the out-of-plane O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ chemical dilutions on the itinerant spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic phase in CeFeAsO. Remarkably, the suppression of SDW is not sensitive at all to the different kinds of disorder introduced in the two cases. Still, it is clearly shown that the sizeable in-plane disorder induced by the Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ substitution is highly effective in suppressing $T_{\textrm{c}}$. Differently from what is observed in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$, the ordered magnetic phase of the Ce sublattice is preserved throughout the whole phase diagram in CeFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO ($x \leq 0.2$). The evolution of the magnetic order in FeSeTe crystals as a function of Se content was investigated by means of ac/dc magnetometry and muon-spin spectroscopy. Experimental results and self-consistent DFT calculations both indicate that muons are implanted in vacant iron-excess sites, where they probe a local field mainly of dipolar origin, resulting from an antiferromagnetic (AFM) bicollinear arrangement of iron spins. This long-range AFM phase disorders progressively with increasing Se content. At the same time all the tested samples manifest a marked glassy character that vanishes for high Se contents. The presence of local electronic/compositional inhomogeneities most likely favours the growth of clusters whose magnetic moment "freezes" at low temperature. This glassy magnetic phase justifies both the coherent muon precession seen at short times in the asymmetry data, as well as the glassy behaviour evidenced by both dc and ac magnetometry., Comment: Approved for publication in J. In this paper we report a detailed $\mu^{+}$SR and {}$^{19}$F-NMR study of the La$_{0.7}$Y$_{0.3}$FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ class of materials. Here, the diamagnetic La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$ substitution increases chemical pressure and, accordingly, sizeably enhances the optimal superconducting transition temperature. We investigate the magnetic-superconducting phase transition by keeping the Y content constant ($y = 0.3$) and by varying the F content in the range $0.025 \leq x \leq 0.15$. Our results show how magnetism and superconductivity coexist for $x = 0.065$. Such coexistence is due to segregation of the two phases in macroscopic regions, resembling what was observed in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ materials under applied hydrostatic pressure. This scenario is qualitatively different from the nanoscopic coexistence of the two order parameters observed when La is fully substituted by magnetic rare-earth ions like Sm or Ce., Comment: Proceedings of QCNP12 Conference

A novel method to prepare bulk Fe(Se0.5Te0.5) samples is presented, based on a melting process and a subsequent annealing treatment. With respect to the standard sintering technique, it produces much more homogeneous and denser samples, characterized by large and well interconnected grains. The resulting samples exhibit optimal critical temperature values, sharp resistive and magnetic transitions, large magnetic hysteresis loops and high upper critical fields are observed. Interestingly, the global critical current density is much enhanced as compared to the values reported in literature for bulk samples of the same 11 family, reaching about 103 A/cm2 at zero field at 4.2 K as assessed by magnetic, transport and magneto-optical techniques. Even more importantly, its field dependence turns out to be very weak, such that at \mu_{0}H = 7 T it is suppressed only by a factor \sim2., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

We report on the recovery of the short-range static magnetic order and on the concomitant degradation of the superconducting state in optimally F-doped SmFe_(1-x)Ru_(x)AsO_0.85F_0.15 for 0.1< x<0.6. The two reduced order parameters coexist within nanometer-size domains in the FeAs layers and finally disappear around a common critical threshold x_c=0.6. Superconductivity and magnetism are shown to be closely related to two distinct well-defined local electronic environments of the FeAs layers. The two transition temperatures, controlled by the isoelectronic and diamagnetic Ru substitution, scale with the volume fraction of the corresponding environments. This fact indicates that superconductivity is assisted by magnetic fluctuations, which are frozen whenever a short-range static order appears, and totally vanish above the magnetic dilution threshold x_c., Comment: Approved for publication in Phys. The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} as a function of the fluorine content x was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at x=0.04, seemingly accompanied/induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping (x>0.04) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

We report on the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states in CeFeAsO1-xFx for x=0.06(2), characterized by transition temperatures T_m=30 K and T_c=18 K, respectively. Zero and transverse field muon-spin relaxation measurements show that below 10 K the two phases coexist within a nanoscopic scale over a large volume fraction. In this work we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study of the structural, transport and superconducting properties of Sm(Fe1-xRux)As(O0.85F0.15) polycrystalline samples as a function of Ru content (x) ranging from 0 to 1. The choice of Ru as isoelectronic substitution at Fe site of F-doped compounds allows to better clarify the role of structural disorder in modifying the normal and superconducting properties of these newly discovered multiband superconductors. Two different regions are identified: the Fe-rich phase (x<0.5) where superconducting and normal state properties are strongly affected by disorder induced by Ru substitution; the Ru-rich phase (x>0.5) where the system is metallic and strongly compensated and the presence of Ru frustrates the magnetic moment on Fe ions. Here the lack of magnetic features and related spin fluctuations may be the cause for the suppression of superconductivity., Comment: Accepted on Physical Review B

We present transport and superconducting properties - namely resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck effect, thermal conductivity, upper critical field - of two different families of Fe-based superconductors, which can be viewed in many respects as end members: SmFeAs(O1-xFx) with the largest Tc and the largest anisotropy and Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex), with the largest Hc2, the lowest Tc and the lowest anisotropy. In the case of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) series, we find that a single band description allows to extract an approximated estimation of band parameters such as carrier density and mobility from experimental data, although the behaviour of Seebeck effect as a function of doping demonstrates that a multiband description would be more appropriate. On the contrary, experimental data of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series exhibit a strongly compensated behaviour, which can be described only within a multiband model. In the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series, the role of the excess Fe, tuned by Se stoichiometry, is found to be twofold: it dopes electrons in the system and it introduces localized magnetic moments, responsible for Kondo like scattering and likely pair-breaking of Cooper pairs. Hence, excess Fe plays a crucial role also in determining superconducting properties such as the Tc and the upper critical field Bc2. The huge Bc2 values of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) samples are described by a dirty limit law, opposed to the clean limit behaviour of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) samples. Hence, magnetic scattering by excess Fe seems to drive the system in the dirty regime, but its detrimental pairbreaking role seems not to be as severe as predicted by theory. This issue has yet to be clarified, addressing the more fundamental issue of the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity.

We present measurements of resistivity and thermopower of Fe1+xTe1-ySey single crystalline samples with y=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.45 in zero field and in a magnetic field B=8T. We propose a qualitative analysis of the temperature behavior of S, where the samples are described as almost compensated semimetals: different electron and hole bands with similar carrier concentrations compete and their relative contribution to the thermoelectric transport depends on the respective filling, mobility and coupling with phonons. For y>=0.2, superconductivity occurs and the optimum Se-doping level for a maximum Tc of 13 K turns out to be y=0.3. At low temperatures, evidence of a contribution to S by an excitation-drag mechanism is found, while at high temperatures a strikingly flat behavior of S is explained within a narrow band Hubbard model. The support of a theoretical background which could provide band resolved parameters such as carrier density, mobility and electron-phonon coupling of each band would allow to extract from our data valuable quantitative information on the transport and superconducting mechanisms of these iron chalcogenides., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We report about muSR measurements on SmFeAsO1-xFx which helped us to identify the signature of diluted ferromagnetic inclusions, ubiquitous in the iron pnictides. The temperature behaviour of the first critical field ($B_{C1}$) of superconducting thin film samples can be determined with high accuracy using an inductive and contactless method. Driving a sinusoidal current in a single coil placed in front of the sample, a non zero third harmonic voltage $V_{3}$ is induced in it when Abrikosov vortices enter the sample. Conditions to be satisfied for the quantitative evaluation of $B_{C1}$ using this technique are detailed. As validation test, different type II superconductors (Nb, NbN, MgB$_{2}$ and Y$_{1}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-d}$ under the form of thin films) have been measured. The comparison between experimental results, data presented in literature and theoretical predictions is presented and discussed., Comment: to be published in Journal of Applied Physics

We present a study concerning the partial substitution of yttrium at the lanthanum site of the undoped LaFeAsO and superconducting LaFeAsO0.85F0.15 compounds. We prepared samples with a nominal yttrium content up to 70% producing simultaneous shrinkage of both the a- and c-lattice parameters by 1.8% and 1.7%, respectively. The chemical pressure provided by the partial substitution with this smaller ion size causes a lowering of the spin density wave temperature in the undoped compounds, as well as an increase of the superconducting transition temperatures in the doped ones. The 15% fluorine-doped samples reach a maximum critical temperature of 40.2 K for the 50% yttrium substitution. Comparison with literature data indicates that chemical pressure cannot be the only mechanism which tunes drastically both TSDW and Tc in 1111 compounds. Our data suggest that structural disorder induced by the partial substitution in the La site or by doping could play an important role as well.

We present uSR investigations on SmFeAsO_1-xF_x showing coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity only in a very narrow F-doping range. The sharp crossover between the two types of order is similar to that observed in LaFeAsO_1-xF_x, suggesting a common behavior for the 1111 pnictides. The analysis of the muon asymmetry demonstrates that the coexistence must be nanoscopic, i.e. the two phases must be finely interspersed over a typical length-scale of few nm. In this regime both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures collapse to very low values. Comment on "Large energy gaps in CaC6 from tunneling spectroscopy: possible evidence of strong-coupling superconductivity"

The linear and nonlinear response to a microwave electromagnetic field of two c-axis oriented polycrystalline samples of the newly discovered superconductor CaC6 (Tc = 11.5 K) is studied in the superconducting state down to 2 K. The surface resistance Rs and the third order intermodulation distortion, arising from a two-tone excitation, have been measured as a function of temperature and microwave circulating power. Experiments are carried out using a dielectrically loaded copper cavity operating at 7 GHz in a "hot finger" configuration. The results confirm recent experimental findings that CaC6 behaves as a weakly-coupled, fully gapped, superconductor. The weak power dependence of Rs encourages a further investigation of this novel superconductor as a possible alternative to Nb in specific microwave applications., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Appl. We report a study of the temperature dependence of the surface resistance RS in the graphite intercalated compound (GIC) CaC6, where superconductivity at 11.5 K was recently discovered. Experiments are carried out using a copper dielectrically loaded cavity operating at 7 GHz in a "hot finger" configuration. Bulk CaC6 samples have been synthesized from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Microwave data allows to extract unique information on the quasiparticle density and on the nature of pairing in superconductors. The two tone intermodulation distortion arising in MgB2 thin films synthesized by hybrid physical-chemical vapour deposition is studied in order to probe the influence of the two bands on the nonlinear response of this superconductor. The measurements are carried out by using a dielectrically loaded copper cavity operating at 7 GHz. Microwave data on samples having critical temperatures above 41 K, very low resistivity values, and residual resistivity ratio larger than 10, are shown. The dependence of the nonlinear surface losses and of the third order intermodulation products on the power feeding the cavity and on the temperature is analyzed. At low power, the signal arising from distortion versus temperature shows the intrinsic s-wave behavior expected for this compound. The temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $\lambda_{ab}(T)$, has been measured in a c-axis oriented polycrystalline CaC$_{6}$ bulk sample using a high-resolution mutual inductance technique. A clear exponential behavior of $\lambda_{ab}(T)$ has been observed at low temperatures, strongly suggesting isotropic s-wave pairing. Data fit using the standard BCS theory yields $\lambda_{ab}(0)=(720\pm 80)$ Angstroem and $\Delta(0)=(1.79\pm 0.08)$ meV. The ratio $2\Delta(0)/k_{_B}T_{c}=(3.6\pm 0.2)$ gives indication for a conventional weakly coupled superconductor., Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

The critical current density of a superconducting film can be easily determined by an inductive and contactless method. Driving a sinusoidal current in a single coil placed in front of a superconducting sample, a non zero third harmonic voltage V_3 is induced in it when the sample goes beyond the Bean critical state. The onset of V_3 marks the value of current beyond which the sample response to the magnetic induction is no more linear. To take into account, in a realistic way, the magnetic coupling between the film and the coil we have developed a discrete model of the inducing and induced currents distribution. In the framework of this model the magnetic field profile on the sample surface and the coefficient linking the current flowing in the coil and the critical current density J_C of superconducting thin films is evaluated. The numerical results are checked measuring J_C of several thin films of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-d) of known superconducting properties, used as a control material., Comment: to be published in Journal of Applied Physics

The two tone intermodulation arising in MgB2 thin films deposited in-situ by planar magnetron sputtering on sapphire substrates is studied. Samples are characterised using an open-ended dielectric puck resonator operating at 8.8 GHz. The experimental results show that the third order products increase with the two-tone input power with a slope ranging between 1.5 and 2.3. The behaviour can be understood introducing a mechanism of vortex penetration in grain boundaries as the most plausible source of non linearities in these films. Using a single coil mutual inductance technique, we measure the low temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in superconducting NbN films prepared with similar critical temperatures around 16 K but with different microstructures. Only (100) epitaxial and weakly granular (100) textured films display the characteristic exponential dependence of conventional BCS s-wave superconductors. More granular (111) textured films exhibit a linear dependence, indicating a gapless state in spite of the s-wave gap. We present a study of the electrodynamic response of MgB2 pellets and thin film samples exhibiting critical temperatures ranging between 26 and 38 K. We have performed accurate measurements of the surface impedance ZS =RS+iXS as a function of the temperature and of the magnitude of the electromagnetic field. The temperature variation and the field dependence of ZS was measured by a dielectric resonator cavity technique in the microwave region. We present a study on the power dependence of the microwave surface impedance in thin films of the novel superconductor MgB2. 500 nm thick samples exhibiting critical temperatures ranging between 26 and 38 K are synthesized by an ex-situ post-anneal of e-beam evaporated boron in the presence of an Mg vapor at 900 C. Preliminary results on films grown in situ by a high rate magnetron sputtering technique from stoichiometric MgB2 and Mg targets are also reported. Microwave measurements have been carried out employing a dielectrically loaded niobium superconducting cavity operating at 19.8 GHz and 4 K. We report on measurements of the low temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth lambda_ab in several single crystals of La_2-xSr_xCuO_4, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 and YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x at various doping levels ranging from the under- to the overdoped regimes by using a novel single-coil technique achieving 10 pm resolution. We have found a linear dependence of lambda_ab in all samples with a rapidly increasing slope dlambda_ab/dT as doping decreases. Our analysis of the data indicates that a superconducting gap with d-wave symmetry is sufficient to quantitatively account for the above slope values in the optimally or over- doped samples. In the underdoped samples, the d-wave model predicts much smaller values than those measured by assuming realistic values for the zero-temperature lambda_ab and gap delta. The experimental data are compatible with a model of thermodynamic phase fluctuations of the order parameter.
