Abstract Background Vietnam’s primary mechanism of achieving sustainable funding for universal health coverage (UHC) and financial protection has been through its social health insurance (SHI) scheme. Steady progress towards access has been made and by 2020, over 90% of the population were enrolled in SHI. In 2022, as part of a larger transition towards the increased domestic financing of healthcare, tuberculosis (TB) services were integrated into SHI. This change required people with TB to use SHI for treatment at district-level facilities or to pay out of pocket for services. This study was conducted in preparation for this transition. It aimed to understand more about uninsured people with TB, assess the feasibility of enrolling them into SHI, and identify the barriers they faced in this process. Methods A mixed-method case study was conducted using a convergent parallel design between November 2018 and January 2022 in ten districts of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Quantitative data were collected through a pilot intervention that aimed to facilitate SHI enrollment for uninsured individuals with TB. Descriptive statistics were calculated. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 34 participants, who were purposively sampled for maximum variation. Qualitative data were analyzed through an inductive approach and themes were identified through framework analysis. Quantitative and qualitative data sources were triangulated. Results We attempted to enroll 115 uninsured people with TB into SHI; 76.5% were able to enroll. On average, it took 34.5 days to obtain a SHI card and it cost USD 66 per household. The themes indicated that a lack of knowledge, high costs for annual premiums, and the household-based registration requirement were barriers to SHI enrollment. Participants indicated that alternative enrolment mechanisms and greater procedural flexibility, particularly for undocumented people, is required to achieve full population coverage with SHI in urban centers. Conclusions Significant addressable barriers to SHI enrolment for people affected by TB were identified. A quarter of individuals remained unable to enroll after receiving enhanced support due to lack of required documentation. The experience gained during this health financing transition is relevant for other middle-income countries as they address the provision of financial protection for the treatment of infectious diseases.

In Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of bridges, accurately assessing damage is critical to maintaining the safety and integrity of a structure. One of the primary challenges in damage assessment is the precise localization and quantification of defects, which is essential for making timely maintenance decisions and reducing the risk of structural failures. This paper introduces a novel damage detection method for SHM of a truss bridge by coupling a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model with an evolved Artificial Rabbit Optimization (EVARO) algorithm. The integration of DNN with the stochastic search capability of the EVARO algorithm helps to avoid local minima, thereby ensuring more accurate and reliable results. Additionally, the optimization algorithm’s effectiveness is further enhanced by incorporating evolving predator features and the Cauchy motion search mechanism. The proposed method is first validated using various data benchmark problems, demonstrating its effectiveness compared to other well-known algorithms. Secondly, a case study involving the Chuong Duong truss bridge under different simulated damage scenarios further confirms the superiority of the proposed method in both localizing and quantifying damages.

AbstractDigital transformation is a keyword that has not only been mentioned in recent years but is also strongly applied by companies. However, the benefits of digital transformation for companies are still an issue that needs to be researched. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine the dynamics of digital transformation on banking business results. The research was conducted with joint stock commercial banks in Vietnam listed on the stock exchange. Based on text analysis on annual reports to measure banks’ digital transformation level from 2015 to 2021. Research results have shown that digital transformation has a negative impact on bank’s performance (through the return on assets and return on equity). Furthermore, the study also found that there was a paradoxical situation where COVID-19 increased the profits of banks. This result provides exciting discussions related to digital transformation and bank performance.

AbstractMany companies have been and are implementing diversification to take advantage of capital, reduce risks, and increase revenue for enterprises. At the same time, government support is considered to have positive implications for companies. This study was conducted to assess the impact of diversification and government support on the firm performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. Data was collected on 1,342 SMEs in Vietnam from 2011 to 2015. The analysis results show that diversification has a positive effect on firm performance (through return on assets). However, diversification has no impact on return on equity. The results show that the resource-based view theory is supported when enterprises implement meaningful diversification. The study also shows that the trade-off theory is supported when companies diversify. Government support has no impact on firm performance. The research will help enterprises orient themselves appropriately when deciding to diversify or register and receive support from the government.

Abstract Whole chromosome losses resulting in near-haploid karyotypes are found in a rare subgroup of treatment-refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia. To systematically dissect the unique physiology and uncover susceptibilities that can be exploited in near-haploid leukemia, we leveraged single-cell RNA-Seq and computational inference of cell cycle stages to pinpoint key differences between near-haploid and diploid leukemia cells. Combining cell cycle stage-specific differential expression with gene essentiality scores from a genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9-mediated knockout screen, we identified the homologous recombination pathway component RAD51B as an essential gene in near-haploid leukemia. DNA damage analyses revealed significantly increased sensitivity of RAD51-mediated repair to RAD51B loss in the G2/M stage of near-haploid cells, suggesting a unique role of RAD51B in the homologous recombination pathway. Elevated G2/M and G1/S checkpoint signaling was part of a RAD51B signature expression program in response to chemotherapy in a xenograft model of human near-haploid B-ALL, and RAD51B and its associated programs were overexpressed in a large panel of near-haploid B-ALL patients. These data highlight a unique genetic dependency on DNA repair machinery in near-haploid leukemia and demarcate RAD51B as a promising candidate for targeted therapy in this treatment-resistant disease.

Abstract Background There is extensive evidence for the cost-effectiveness of programmatic and additional tuberculosis (TB) interventions, but no studies have employed the social return on investment (SROI) methodology. We conducted a SROI analysis to measure the benefits of a community health worker (CHW) model for active TB case finding and patient-centered care. Methods This mixed-method study took place alongside a TB intervention implemented in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, between October-2017 – September-2019. The valuation encompassed beneficiary, health system and societal perspectives over a 5-year time-horizon. We conducted a rapid literature review, two focus group discussions and 14 in-depth interviews to identify and validate pertinent stakeholders and material value drivers. We compiled quantitative data from the TB program’s and the intervention’s surveillance systems, ecological databases, scientific publications, project accounts and 11 beneficiary surveys. We mapped, quantified and monetized value drivers to derive a crude financial benefit, which was adjusted for four counterfactuals. We calculated a SROI based on the net present value (NPV) of benefits and investments using a discounted cash flow model with a discount rate of 3.5%. A scenario analysis assessed SROI at varying discount rates of 0-10%. Results The mathematical model yielded NPVs of US$235,511 in investments and US$8,497,183 in benefits. This suggested a return of US$36.08 for each dollar invested, ranging from US$31.66-US39.00 for varying discount rate scenarios. Conclusions The evaluated CHW-based TB intervention generated substantial individual and societal benefits. The SROI methodology may be an alternative for the economic evaluation of healthcare interventions.

Ultraselective transcatheter arterial embolization with microcoils is a highly effective and safe treatment for lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Here we present a patient with a history of pandiverticulosis, who was hospitalized with acute hemorrhage in the mid-transverse colon. The patient underwent a successful embolization with a microcatheter and microcoils. Postembolization angiography demonstrated no residual flow to the areas of concern. One-month postembolization, however, the patient presented to the emergency department with nonspecific abdominal symptoms. After imaging and endoscopy studies, a colonic stricture–a rare complication of ultraselective embolization with microcoils– was found. The patient underwent partial colectomy of the mid-transverse colon; postcolectomy course was uneventful. The case suggests a rare but clinically significant complication of ultraselective embolization using microcoils for patients with diverticular hemorrhage. We therefore hope to assist clinicians in making the appropriate diagnosis and intervention when presented with similar clinical presentations and history of embolization.

This qualitative study reports the results of sensemaking when teacher-practitioner inquiry in professional development (PD) is carried out for 120 Vietnamese K-12 and college teachers. The PD was designed to prepare teachers to teach with different newly-approved English language coursebooks using a genre-based systemic functional linguistic approach (SFL). During scaffolds in workshops, teaching staff guided teachers in cooperating and drafting lessons using genre-based SFL, examining the lessons’ impacts on students’ responses. Teachers also journaled to unravel the knitted instructional complexities and express their willingness to adapt to emerging teaching practices. Data were collected via the video recordings, teachers’ interviews, and content analysis of their inquiry products. Four themes representing the complexities in teachers’ sensemaking of scaffolded collaborative PD were: 1. Improved teacher agency in terms of planning and instruction; 2. Research-based experiential learning creating a venue for intrinsic motivation to innovate in instruction; 3. An overwhelming feeling of inequity between high and low-resourced instructional situations; 4. The mismatch between teachers’ advocacy for desired deep-learning approach and the traditional ideology of rote learning for exams.

This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm to deal with an inverse problem of a large-scale truss bridge. Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) Algorithm is a well-known and widely applied metaheuristic algorithm. Nevertheless, GWO has two major drawbacks. First, this algorithm depends crucially on the positions of the leading Wolf. If the position of the leaderis far from the best solution, the obtained results are poor. On the other hand, GWO does not own capacities to improve the quality of new generations if elements are trapped into local minima. To remedy the shortcomings of GWO, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining GWO with Genetic Algorithm (GA), termed HGWO-GA. This proposed method contains two key features (1) based on crossover and mutation capacities, GA is first utilized to generate the high-quality elements (2) after that, the optimization capacity of GWO is employed to seek the optimal solutions. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a large-scale truss bridge is employed for model updating. The obtained results show that HGWO-GA not only provides a good agreement between numerical and experimental results but also outperforms traditional GWO in terms of accuracy.

Introduction The health and economic burden of tuberculosis (TB) in urban Viet Nam is high. Social protection and support interventions can improve treatment outcomes and reduce costs. However, evidence regarding optimal strategies in this context is lacking. This study aimed to increase understanding of what people with TB and healthcare providers (HCPs) perceive as important to improve TB treatment outcomes and reduce costs.Methods We conducted qualitative focus group discussions (seven groups, n=30) and key informant interviews (n=4) with people with drug-susceptible and multidrug-resistant TB and HCPs in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. Topic guides covered perspectives on and prioritisation of different forms of social protection and support. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted using a Framework for Transformative Social Protection.Results We identified three themes and seven subthemes. The first theme, ‘Existing financial safety nets are essential, but could go further to support people affected by TB’, highlights that support to meet the medical costs of TB treatment and flexible cash transfers are a priority for people with TB and HCPs. The second, ‘It is important to promote “physical and spiritual health” during TB treatment’, demonstrates that extended psychosocial and nutritional support would encourage people with TB during their treatment. The third, ‘Accessibility and acceptability are critical in designing social support interventions for people with TB’, shows the importance of ensuring that support is accessible and proportional to the needs of people with TB and their families.Conclusions Accessible interventions that incorporate financial risk protection, nutritional and psychosocial support matter most to people with TB and HCPs in urban Viet Nam to improve their treatment outcomes and reduce catastrophic costs. This study can inform the design of stronger person-centred interventions to advance progress towards the goals of the WHO’s End TB Strategy.

AbstractHospitality higher education started to depart from its vocational orientation in the latter half of the 20th century following a rapid growth of global tourism. By incorporating liberal studies into its curricula, the sector aimed at helping students develop not only “professionally” but also “personally”. This article reviews the liberation of hospitality higher education and argues that it is an incomplete process due to a disproportionate emphasis on “professional” development. To complete this process, it is necessary to look beyond the boundary of “knowledge”, “skills”, and “attitudes” and regard hospitality not only as an industry but also a human character. Hence, this article calls for a contemplation of the original meaning of hospitality among teachers and learners as part of the effort to truly liberate hospitality higher education.

The process of damage identification in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) gives us a lot of practical information about the current status of the inspected structure. The target of the process is to detect damage status by processing data collected from sensors, followed by identifying the difference between the damaged and the undamaged states. Different machine learning techniques have been applied to attempt to extract features or knowledge from vibration data, however, they need to learn prior knowledge about the factors affecting the structure. In this paper, a novel method of structural damage detection is proposed using a hybrid convolution neural network and recurrent neural network. A convolution neural network is used to extract deep features while recurrent neural network is trained to learn the long-term historical dependency in time series data. This proposed method which combines two types of features -spatial and temporal- helps to increase discrimination ability when being compared with the one that contains deep features only. Finally, the neural network is applied to categorize the time series into two states - undamaged and damaged. The accuracy of the proposed method was tested on a benchmark dataset of Z24-bridge (Switzerland). The result shows that the hybrid method provides a high level of accuracy in damage identification of the tested structure

In this paper, the pavement maintenance and rehabilitation practices are presented based on the analysis of as-built data housed in PaveM—the pavement management system for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). A 35-year period of as-built data from 1983 to 2017 was analyzed, involving 37 treatment strategies with 17 for asphalt and 20 for Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements. The top ten treatment strategies, geographical and temporal variation of treated mileage, together with treatment costs and corresponding network condition were presented. It was found that: (1) The top 10 strategies are, in descending order: “Chip Seal”, “Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Thin Overlay”, “HMA Medium Overlay”, “HMA Thick Overlay”, “Mill and Fill”, “Grind/Replace Slabs”, “Slab Replacement”, “Crack Seat and Overlay”, “HMA Lane Replacement”, and “PCC Lane Replacement”. The top 10 strategies accounted for about 84% of the total treated lane kilometers. (2) On average, about 12.4% of the total network inventory (both asphalt and concrete pavements) was treated each year. This is equivalent to treat the entire network once every eight years. (3) About 18.3% of AC and 35.1% of PCC rehabilitation mileage was found applied on a lane-by-lane basis, instead of across all lanes. This finding solidified the necessity of a lane-based pavement management system in California. (4) The average annual weighted maintenance and rehabilitation cost per lane kilometer is about $192,248 for asphalt and $366,804 for PCC pavements. Due to the lack of preventive types of treatments for PCC pavement, the per lane kilometer cost is almost twice as high as that for its asphalt counterpart. It is suggested that more preventive type of treatments be implemented for PCC pavements.

Active case finding (ACF) is a strategy that aims to identify people with tuberculosis (TB) earlier in their disease. This outreach approach may lead to a reduction in catastrophic cost incurrence (costs exceeding 20% of annual household income), a main target of WHO’s End TB Strategy. Our study assessed the socio-economic impact of ACF by comparing patient costs in actively and passively detected people with TB. Longitudinal patient cost surveys were prospectively fielded for people with drug-sensitive pulmonary TB, with 105 detected through ACF and 107 passively detected. Data were collected in four Vietnamese cities between October 2020 and March 2022. ACF reduced pre-treatment (USD 10 vs. 101, p < 0.001) and treatment costs (USD 888 vs. 1213, p < 0.001) in TB-affected individuals. Furthermore, it reduced the occurrence of job loss (15.2% vs. 35.5%, p = 0.001) and use of coping strategies (28.6% vs. 45.7%, p = 0.004). However, catastrophic cost incurrence was high at 52.8% and did not differ between cohorts. ACF did not significantly decrease indirect costs, the largest contributor to catastrophic costs. ACF reduces costs but cannot sufficiently reduce the risk of catastrophic costs. As income loss is the largest driver of costs during TB treatment, social protection schemes need to be expanded.

Abstract Despite pioneering as the holy grail in photocatalysts, abundant reports have demonstrated that g-C3N4 performs poor photocatalytic activity due to its high recombination rate of photo-induced charge carriers. Many efforts have been conducted to overcome this limitation in which the semiconductor–semiconductor coupling strategies toward heterojunction formation were considered as the easiest but the most effective method. Herein, a one-pot solid-state reaction of thiourea and sodium molybdate as precursors at different temperatures under N2 gas was applied for preparing composites of MoS2/g-C3N4. The physicochemical characterization of the final products determines the variation in contents of components (MoS2 and g-C3N4) via the increase of synthesis temperature. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the MoS2/g-C3N4 composites was evaluated by the degradation of Rhodamine B in an aqueous solution under visible light. Therein, composites synthesized at 500 °C showed the best photocatalytic performance with a degradation efficiency of 90%, much higher than that of single g-C3N4. The significant improvement in photocatalytic performance is attributed to the enhancement in light-harvesting and extension in photo-induced charge carriers’ lifetime of composites which are originated from the synergic effect between the components. Besides, the photocatalytic mechanism is demonstrated to well-fit into the S-scheme pathway with apparent evidences.

Constructing appropriate heterojunction systems has been considered the most promising among different methods for achieving effective charge transfer and separation to improve photocatalytic performance. Herein, SnS2/g-C3N4 composites consisting of SnS2 nanosheets loaded on a porous g-C3N4 matrix were successfully prepared via direct calcination from the precursors of tin (IV) chloride and thiourea. Under visible light, all the composites outperformed pure SnS2 and g-C3N4 in terms of Rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation, and the highest removal efficiency after 6 h of irradiation was 92.22%. Their photocatalytic performance was significantly enhanced because of the positive synergistic relationship between semiconductors (SnS2 and g-C3N4) and the rational Step-scheme charge transfer mechanism. Thus, these composites contributed to the strong redox power, high migration efficiency, and extended lifetime of photogenerated carriers.

The slopes containing discontinuous planes such as bedding planes, rupture, or boundary between two soil layers are often prone to sliding. Thus, the characteristics of shear strength mobilized along the discontinuous planes should be examined. In this study, the shear strength at the interface between two different soil layers will be investigated based on ring shear test. The combined sample comprising of one kaolin layer and one kaolin + bentonite mixture layer was used to simulate the discontinuous planes between two soil layers. A number of ring shear tests were conducted on these samples at a normal stress of 98 kPa and shear rates from 0.02 to 20 mm/min using a multi-stage of shearing rates procedure. The research results indicate that the shear strength at the interface sharply increases to reach the peak value after a small shear displacement, then drops to the residual value. The residual interface strength tends to increase with increasing shear rates above 2 mm/min and the level of increase in residual interface strength depends on the contact surface. Furthermore, the effect of the order sample layer in combined samples can be ignored when determining the peak, the residual interface strengths as well as the rate effect on residual interface strength in the laboratory.

BackgroundApproximately 1. 07 million people in Vietnam are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). To address this epidemic, the South East Asian Research Collaborative in Hepatitis (SEARCH) launched a 600-patient cohort study and two clinical trials, both investigating shortened treatment strategies for chronic HCV infection with direct-acting antiviral drugs. We conducted ethnographic research with a subset of trial participants and found that the majority were aware of HCV infection and its implications and were motivated to seek treatment. However, people who inject drugs (PWID), and other groups at risk for HCV were under-represented, although injecting drug use is associated with high rates of HCV.Material and MethodsWe designed a community-based participatory research (CBPR) study to engage in dialogues surrounding HCV and other community-prioritized health issues with underserved groups at risk for HCV in Ho Chi Minh City. The project consists of three phases: situation analysis, CBPR implementation, and dissemination. In this paper, we describe the results of the first phase (i.e., the situation analysis) in which we conducted desk research and organized stakeholder mapping meetings with representatives from local non-government and community-based organizations where we used participatory research methods to identify and analyze key stakeholders working with underserved populations.ResultsTwenty six institutions or groups working with the key underserved populations were identified. Insights about the challenges and dynamics of underserved communities were also gathered. Two working groups made up of representatives from the NGO and CBO level were formed.DiscussionUsing the information provided by local key stakeholders to shape the project has helped us to build solid relationships, give the groups a sense of ownership from the early stages, and made the project more context specific. These steps are not only important preliminary steps for participatory studies but also for other research that takes place within the communities.

We study the information outage probability (IOP) and constrained capacity of moderate-length codes overAWGN channels based on M-ary phase-shift keying signals. The IOP provides an important benchmarkfor performance evaluation of moderate-length codes. We analytically compute the IOP and compare itwith numerical simulations using the DVB-S2 error-correcting code with numerous code rates employed in Protected Tactical Waveform (PTW). Numerical results confirm the tightness of the analytical results.

Single-nucleus RNA-seq enables interrogation of complex tissues but is limited due to batch effects and processing costs. Here the authors use barcoded antibodies against the nuclear pore complex to label nuclei from distinct samples, and develop a computational tool to assign the sample of origin.

Abstract Background Considerable progress has been made in dengue management, however the lack of appropriate predictors of severity has led to huge number of unwanted admissions mostly decided on the grounds of warning signs. Apoptosis related mediators, among others, are known to correlate with severe dengue (SD) although no predictive validity is established. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) with SD, and evaluate its prognostic value in SD prediction at acute phase. Methods This was a hospital-based prospective cohort study conducted in Vietnam. All the recruited patients were required to be admitted to the hospital and were strictly monitored for various laboratory and clinical parameters (including progression to SD) until discharged. Plasma samples collected during acute phase (6–48 h before defervescence) were used to estimate the level of cfDNA. Results Of the 61 dengue patients, SD patients (n = 8) developed shock syndrome in 4.8 days (95% CI 3.7–5.4) after the fever onset. Plasma cfDNA levels before the defervescence of SD patients were significantly higher than the non-SD group (p = 0.0493). From the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a cut-off of > 36.9 ng/mL was able to predict SD with a good sensitivity (87.5%), specificity (54.7%), and area under the curve (AUC) (0.72, 95% CI 0.55–0.88; p = 0.0493). Conclusions Taken together, these findings suggest that cfDNA could serve as a potential prognostic biomarker of SD. Studies with cfDNA kinetics and its combination with other biomarkers and clinical parameters would further improve the diagnostic ability for SD.

KAGRA is a gravitational-wave (GW) detector constructed in Japan with two unique key features: It was constructed underground, and the test-mass mirrors are cooled to cryogenic temperatures. These features are not included in other kilometer-scale detectors but will be adopted in future detectors such as the Einstein Telescope. KAGRA performed its first joint observation run with GEO600 in 2020. In this observation, the sensitivity of KAGRA to GWs was inferior to that of other kilometer-scale detectors such as LIGO and Virgo. However, further upgrades to the detector are ongoing to reach the sensitivity for detecting GWs in the next observation run, which is scheduled for 2022. In this article, the current situation, sensitivity, and future perspectives are reviewed.

Our special issue on young consumers introduces readers to a research area that has been part of the consumer behavior field for over 50 years. We provide an overview of topics and findings from past to present that have appeared in marketing and consumer journals. We also identify current research issues and gaps and invite readers to contribute to the field. Throughout our discussion, we introduce the 10 articles in this special issue, whose topics include neuroscience insights into youth risk behaviors, the effects of social media on youth, social activism among young people, strategies for encouraging them to eat healthier food, parenting strategies and youth smoking, how gambling advertising affects youth, their need for marketplace literacy, and the importance of studying the lived experiences of youth in poverty. These articles include empirical findings and identify opportunities for future research that can positively impact the lives of children and adolescents.

Background: The protective or pathogenic role of T lymphocytes during the acute phase of dengue virus (DENV) infection has not been fully understood despite its importance in immunity and vaccine development.Objectives: This study aimed to clarify the kinetics of T lymphocyte subsets during the clinical course of acute dengue patients.Study design: In this hospital-based cohort study, 59 eligible Vietnamese dengue patients were recruited and admitted. They were investigated and monitored for T cell subsets and a panel of clinical and laboratory parameters every day until discharged and at post-discharge from the hospital.Results: We described for the first time the kinetics of T cell response during the clinical course of DENV infection. Severe cases showed significantly lower levels of effector CD8+ T cells compared to mild cases at day −1 (p = 0.017) and day 0 (p = 0.033) of defervescence. After defervescence, these cell counts in severe cases increased rapidly to equalize with the levels of mild cases. Our results also showed a decline in total CD4+ T, Th1, Th1/17 cells during febrile phase of dengue patients compared to normal controls or convalescent phase. On the other hand, Th2 cells increased during DENV infection until convalescent phase. Cytokines such as interferon-γ, IL-12p70, IL-5, IL-23, IL-17A showed tendency to decrease on day 0 and 1 compared with convalescence and only IL-5 showed significance indicating the production during acute phase was not systemic.Conclusion: With a rigorous study design, we uncovered the kinetics of T cells in natural DENV infection. Decreased number of effector CD8+ T cells in the early phase of infection and subsequent increment after defervescence day probably associated with the T cell migration in DENV infection.

African swine fever (ASF) is a devastating disease of swine and the most important disease for the pork industry. Since the outbreaks in 2007 in the Caucasian region, it has been spreading to the West and East quite swiftly. In this study we have analyzed the clinical signs and pathological features of the first outbreaks on ASF in Vietnam in 2019, caused by an isolate with 100% similarity to the genotype II (p72) isolates from Georgia in 2007 and China in 2018. The disease onset with a peracute to acute clinical course with high mortality. Some animals showed very unspecific clinical signs with other showing severe hyperthermia, respiratory distress, diarrhea, or vomit. Hemorrhagic splenomegaly and lymphadenitis were the main lesions observed at post mortem examination, with histopathological changes confirming the lymphoid depletion and multiorganic hemorrhages. Monocyte-macrophages were identified by means of immunohistochemical methods as the main target cell for the ASF virus in tissue sections.

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on university students' employability skills and give insights into preparation for future crises that may happen. Design/methodology/approach: Employing an interpretative phenomenological approach with the frame of social cognitive theory, the current study examined the changes in environmental, behavioral and personal elements of human functioning for employability skills being affected by the conditions during the pandemic. Findings: Findings based on ten in-depth semi-structured interviews with students at universities in Vietnam highlighted that the global pandemic performed as both challenge and an opportunity for employability skills development, yet the extent to which the students can benefit from the new studying conditions attributed to each individual's initiatives in taking advantages of resources and acting against difficulties. Originality/value: Whether the pandemic became a hindrance or a motivation for students' employability skills to develop and whether students effectively utilized an agency to overcome challenges and improved their skills after the pandemic have not yet been investigated. This study added to the body of literature regarding self-regulated learners by demonstrating agency in the learning process as well as how to manage careers and improve employability skills by making use of resources in disconnected settings.

BackgroundIn 2015, Singapore had the first and only reported foodborne outbreak of invasive disease caused by the group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae). Disease, predominantly septic arthritis and meningitis, was associated with sequence type (ST)283, acquired from eating raw farmed freshwater fish. Although GBS sepsis is well-described in neonates and older adults with co-morbidities, this outbreak affected non-pregnant and younger adults with fewer co-morbidities, suggesting greater virulence. Before 2015 ST283 had only been reported from twenty humans in Hong Kong and two in France, and from one fish in Thailand. We hypothesised that ST283 was causing region-wide infection in Southeast Asia.Methodology/principal findingsWe performed a literature review, whole genome sequencing on 145 GBS isolates collected from six Southeast Asian countries, and phylogenetic analysis on 7,468 GBS sequences including 227 variants of ST283 from humans and animals. Although almost absent outside Asia, ST283 was found in all invasive Asian collections analysed, from 1995 to 2017. It accounted for 29/38 (76%) human isolates in Lao PDR, 102/139 (73%) in Thailand, 4/13 (31%) in Vietnam, and 167/739 (23%) in Singapore. ST283 and its variants were found in 62/62 (100%) tilapia from 14 outbreak sites in Malaysia and Vietnam, in seven fish species in Singapore markets, and a diseased frog in China.ConclusionsGBS ST283 is widespread in Southeast Asia, where it accounts for a large proportion of bacteraemic GBS, and causes disease and economic loss in aquaculture. If human ST283 is fishborne, as in the Singapore outbreak, then GBS sepsis in Thailand and Lao PDR is predominantly a foodborne disease. However, whether transmission is from aquaculture to humans, or vice versa, or involves an unidentified reservoir remains unknown. Creation of cross-border collaborations in human and animal health are needed to complete the epidemiological picture.

Carbon and iron co-doped titanium dioxide catalyst coated on activated carbon (Fe-C-TiO2/AC) was successfully synthesized using the sol-gel method, followed by hydrothermal treatment. Commercial activated carbon was treated by HNO3 prior to being coated by the as-synthesized catalyst. The composite was characterized by XPS, XRD, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, IR, TEM, HR-TEM, and BET. The performance of the supported catalysts was evaluated in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in the solution under visible-light irradiation. The results showed that, with the appropriate amount of activated carbon, prepared Fe-C-TiO2/AC catalysts exhibited higher catalytic activities and Fe-C-TiO2/AC system showed the best performance. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Fe-C-TiO2/AC was enhanced due to the synergistic effect between AC (adsorption effect) and Fe-C-TiO2 (photocatalysis effect). This facilitated the photocatalytic degradation of RhB by Fe-C-TiO2.

For the complete higher order differential equation u(n)(t)=Σk=0n-1Aku(k)(t)+f(t), t∈ R (*) on a Banach space E, we give a new definition of mild solutions of (*). We then characterize the regular admissibility of a translation invariant subspace al M of BUC(R, E) with respect to (*) in terms of solvability of the operator equation Σj=0n-1AjXal Dj-Xal Dn = C. As application, almost periodicity of mild solutions of (*) is proved.

A large collaboration carefully benchmarks 20 first-principles many-body electronic structure methods on a test set of seven transition metal atoms and their ions and monoxides. Good agreement is attained between three systematically converged methods, resulting in experiment-free reference values. These reference values are used to assess the accuracy of modern emerging and scalable approaches to the many-electron problem. The most accurate methods obtain energies indistinguishable from experimental results, with the agreement mainly limited by the experimental uncertainties. A comparison between methods enables a unique perspective on calculations of many-body systems of electrons.

This study aims to explore the relationship between the influential factors of online learning and the satisfaction of economics and business majors with the quality of their training in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 900 students in private universities completed a questionnaire. The principal findings of this research are that the students are satisfied with their online learning and that learning conferencing software is the most important driving factor leading to the students' satisfaction when compared with learning conditions and learning devices. Another interesting finding is that the experience of using learning conferencing software results in a slight difference in the students' perceived level of satisfaction, adding that users with more than two years' experience are more satisfied with their training quality than users with less than one year's experience. However, the results also show that students want to switch to offline learning when the pandemic is over. This study should, therefore, be of value to higher education authorities wishing to understand their students' perceptions of online learning. In addition, results from the study suggest more managerial approaches as well as improve the online teaching quality during the pandemic.

Primary health care facilities frequently manage dengue cases on an ambulatory basis for the duration of the patient's illness. There is a great opportunity for specific messaging, aimed to reduce dengue virus (DENV) transmission in and around the home, to be directly targeted toward this high-risk ambulatory patient group, as part of an integrated approach to dengue management. The extent however, to which physicians understand, and can themselves effectively communicate strategies to stop focal DENV transmission around an ambulatory dengue case is unknown; the matter of patient comprehension and recollection then ensues. In addition, the effectiveness of N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET)-based insect repellent in protecting dengue patients from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes' bites has not been investigated.A knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) survey, focusing on the mechanisms of DENV transmission and prevention, was performed using semi-structured questionnaires. This survey was targeted towards the patients and family members providing supportive care, and physicians routinely involved in dengue patient management in Southern Vietnam. An additional clinical observational study was conducted to measure the efficacy of a widely-used 13% DEET-based insect repellent to repel Ae. aegypti mosquitoes from the forearms of dengue cases and matched healthy controls.Among both the physician (n = 50) and patient (n = 49) groups there were several respondents lacking a coherent understanding of DENV transmission, leading to some inappropriate attitudes and inadequate acute preventive practices in the household. The application of insect repellent to protect patients and their relatives from mosquito bites was frequently recommended by majority of physicians (78%) participating in the survey. Nevertheless, our tested topical application of 13% DEET conferred only ~1hr median protection time from Ae. aegypti landing. This is notably shorter than that advertised on the manufacturer's label. No differences in landing time between febrile dengue cases or matched healthy controls (n = 19 experiments) were observed.Our study identifies missed opportunities for primary care physicians to improve public health through communication of strategies that could prevent focal dengue transmission in and around a case household. We advocate better access to more efficient communication methods for physicians and auxilliary health workers, supporting to educate those at high risk of DENV transmission. Our empirical testing of a widely-available 13% DEET-based repellent was limited in its protective efficacy against Ae. aegypti mosquito bites, and therefore DENV transmission, suggesting more frequent application is necessary to be beneficial.

There are many activities such as embankment vibratory rollers, piling, blasting tunnel ... causing wave spread in the ground that affect the surrounding buildings. The high ground wave may damage the surrounding buildings and hence may cause confrontations between the local resident community and the project owners. To determine the radius of vibration of each vibrating source that can damage the neighbouring buildings as the basis for planning, choosing construction technology, and designing damping methods to minimize the risk to the surrounding buildings, It is necessary to measure experimental vibration in the field. This paper describes how to install the Ardunio-circuit-based vibration measuring system , by using labview and shows some experimental results of measuring vibration transmitted to the ground caused by constructing activities in Da Nang, Vietnam. The results prove that the measuring system has a considerably low cost and meets the standards and precision according to Vietnamese ISO 7378 and DIN 4054. The software written on Labview platform is connected to the hardware to collect vibration signals from sensors, analyse measurement data, and then make reports on measurement results in table or chart formats to meet the current standard vibration measuring requirements.
