Context: Across Alpine landscapes, a combination of land-use abandonment and climate change is driving forest expansion and promoting the upward migration of trees on grasslands. Yet, it remains unclear how rapidly the upper forest-grassland ecotone will shift and how tree species composition will change, both in terms of species proportions and along elevational gradients. Objectives: Our aim is to investigate the future forest expansion in a landscape in the Eastern Alps under potential grassland abandonment, climate change, natural disturbances (wind and bark beetle), and forest management. Methods: We used the iLand forest landscape model to simulate long-term dynamics (2020–2200) under different scenarios. We coupled model outputs with the concave hull algorithm to identify potential changes in the forest-grassland ecotone, tracking tree species expansion and quantifying elevation and compositional shifts. Results: Under a potential abandonment of alpine grasslands, forest will likely expand rapidly within the twenty-first century regardless climate warming. This because the current upper forest-grassland ecotone is mainly constrained by land use rather than climate. Our simulations also showed that ecotone shifts will be more pronounced on S-facing slopes, while climate change will affect more future tree species composition and forest stocking at higher elevations. Conclusions: Our outcomes provide useful insights on future dynamics of the upper forest ecotone by using a forest landscape model and by integrating not only species migration and climate but also other factors such as disturbances and management. The land-use change from agroforestry (AF) to monoculture-based agriculture has the potential to change soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC). The MBC has been used as an indicator of soil quality as well as to determine the microbial status of soil. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of soil MBC across different agroforestry practices (AFPs) at two depths in southern Ethiopia. Soil samples were collected from cropland/parkland, woodlots, home gardens, and trees on soil and water conservation-based agroforestry practices (AFPs). The MBC was determined using the difference in fumigated and non-fumigated extracted carbon contents. The MBC and soil microbial biomass quotient (MBQ) were significantly different among the different AFPs (P < 0.05). The highest contents of MBC were reported from homegarden on topsoil (505.36 ± 12.45 mg kg−1) and subsoil (401.88 ± 7.26 mg kg−1) soil depths (topsoil = 0–30 cm, subsoil = 30–60 cm), followed by woodlot (topsoil: 464.37 ± 9.19 mg kg−1) and (subsoil: 380.24 ± 6.88 mg kg−1), while the lowest result was registered from the subsoil of the croplands (153.10 ± 46.44 mg kg−1). The higher percentage of MBQ was recorded under the woodlots in topsoil layers (1.48%) and subsoil (1.37%), followed by homegarden (topsoil = 1.41%, subsoil = 1.25%), while the lowest was found under the cropland in subsoil (0.57%). The highest content of soil organic carbon was found under homegarden in topsoil (3.62%) and subsoil (3.23%) followed by woodlot (topsoil: 3.16%, subsoil: 2.87%) and trees on soil and water conservation structures (topsoil: 2.69%, subsoil: 2.51%), while the lowest value was registered under cropland/parkland AF practices (topsoil: 2.67%, subsoil: 2.46%). The distribution of MBC was significantly related to soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, and soil pH in topsoil. Homegarden and woodlot AFPs were suitable for soil MBC improvement among the different AFPs studied, implying that tree-based systems are important for increasing of MBC and ecosystem stability. The intensification of land use and climate change threatens watershed sustainability. These external disturbances drive complex interactions among components within watershed socio-ecological systems (SESs). Understanding how SESs respond to these changes is crucial for developing effective integrated watershed management strategies. Nevertheless, the nonlinear responses of these systems to such changes remain poorly understood. To fill this gap, this study proposes a network analysis method focusing on the Yangtze River Basin to construct an SES network comprising six dimensions, revealing the response of coupled relationships among network elements to climate and land-use change. The results showed that changes in land-use dynamics (LUD) and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) altered the link count and importance of network nodes, with notable shifts in vegetation and landscape nodes. Importantly, a strong nonlinear response of the LUD and SPEI to the coupled relationship between SES elements was observed, and critical thresholds were identified for all network attributes. Furthermore, compared to the SPEI threshold, the LUD threshold was stable at 0.24, demonstrating stronger robustness. The degradation of ecosystem services (ES) poses a significant obstacle to regional sustainable development. Land-use change is widely recognized as a pivotal factor driving the spatio-temporal dynamics of ES supply and demand. However, the future impact of land-use changes on supply–demand risks remains largely unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a study in the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin. By integrating Cellular Automata (CA) and an enhanced Markov model within the GeoSOS-FLUS framework, we dynamically simulated land-use changes under three scenarios—the Normal Development Scenario (NDS), Ecological Protection Scenario (EPS), and Rapid Socio-economic Development Scenario (RDS)—spanning from 2020 to 2050. Furthermore, we employed the InVEST model to analyze the spatio-temporal pattern of supply, demand, supply-to-demand ratios, and supply–demand risks for water provision, carbon storage, and soil conservation under all scenarios. Firstly, all scenarios project an increase in built-up land, primarily from unused land, shrubland, grassland, and cropland. Forest land and water bodies remain stable. Secondly, water provision increases, but demand grows faster, leading to supply–demand imbalances, with high-risk areas in the north, central, and east. Soil conservation shows balanced supply and demand with high-risk areas in the north. Carbon storage remains stable, with high-risk areas in the central and east regions. In temperate Europe, agroforestry practice is gaining interest due to its potential to enhance carbon (C) sequestration and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agriculture. To date, the effects of agroforestry on the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes are still poorly quantified. Here we present a systematic comparison of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes between agroforestry and monoculture cropland systems for the first time, based on two-year field measurements at three sites on different soils in Germany. Each site had an adjacent alley cropping agroforestry system and monoculture, and the agroforestry was established on former monoculture croplands 1 to 11 years prior to this study. We found that area-weighted soil CO2 emissions from agroforestry (3.5−8.1 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) were comparable to monocultures (3.4−9.8 Mg C ha−1 yr−1), whereas area-weighted agroforestry generally had higher soil CH4 uptake (0.4−1.3 kg C ha−1 yr−1) compared to monocultures (0.1−1.2 kg C ha−1 yr−1). Seasonal variations of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes were strongly regulated by soil temperature and moisture, and the spatial variations were influenced by soil texture. Our results suggest that conversion of monoculture cropland to long-term alley cropping agroforestry system could be considered as a sustainable agriculture practice for its great potential for mitigating CH4 emissions. In recent decades, much of China's farmland has been transformed into forests due to the Conversion of Farmland to Forests and Grasses Project. While past research has mainly examined soil nutrients and water conservation, less attention has been given to soil microbial communities. This study examined the effects of converting farmland to forests of Pleioblastus amarus (PA), Populus deltoides (PD), or Zanthoxylum bungeanum (ZB) on the soil physiochemical properties, enzymes, and microbial communities, using abandoned land (AL) as the control, over a period of five years. The results showed that PA increased the soil organic carbon (SOC) content, although not significantly, while significantly boosting the C:N and C:P ratios and urease activity compared to the AL. PD notably reduced the amylase and cellulase activities, as well as the fungal Shannon index. Additionally, the beta diversity of both the bacterial and fungal communities in the PA stand was clearly distinct from that of the AL and the other tree species. The SOC content, total potassium content, and cellulase activity showed significant correlations with bacterial communities. Moreover, the bacterial community changes in the PD and ZB stands were mainly driven by the genera Steroidobacter, Roseisolibacter, and Serendipita, and were negatively correlated with the SOC content, C:N and C:P ratios, and cellulase activity. In contrast, the fungal community changes in the PA stand were primarily influenced by the order Capnodiales, family Capnodiaceae, genus Chaetocapnodium, and species Chaetocapnodium philippinense, which were positively correlated with the soil pH, C:N and C:P ratios, and cellulase activity. Furthermore, "Metabolism" was identified as the primary bacterial function, and converting farmland to forest altered the fungal nutritional type from Saprotroph to Pathotroph–Saprotroph–Symbiotroph, particularly in the PA stand. These findings indicate that converting farmland to forest, particularly with bamboo P. amarus, significantly impacts the bacterial and fungal communities in the soil and changes the fungal trophic type due to the carbon source and cellulase activity of this tree species. Urban flooding has long been a critical issue, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions of developing countries, where land use changes—especially the conversion of rice paddies into urban areas—have significantly increased flood risks. This study investigated the impact of urbanization on flood risk taking Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a case study. Based on historical flood data, the study identified and analyzed frequent flood–prone areas in Chiang Mai during the period from 1990 to 2018. By integrating the Rainfall–Runoff–Inundation (RRI) model simulation results and the remote sensing data, the research quantified dynamics in flood risk, exposure, and vulnerability across these frequent flood–prone areas. The findings demonstrated that the conversion of high–exposure paddy fields into urban areas markedly elevated area flood risks, primarily due to the reduction in water retention capacity and the inheritance of the high–exposure characteristics of paddy fields. This study highlighted the importance of integrating sustainable urban planning and land management strategies in rapidly urbanizing regions. Furthermore, this study examined the feasibility of adopting flood characteristics quantification in frequent flood–prone areas as a systematic approach to analyze the dynamic interplay between flood risks and urbanization in developing countries. Indonesia is the world's third largest cocoa producer, but production is decreasing since 2011. We revisited cocoa farmers for an environmental assessment in Luwu Timur, Sulawesi, 7 months after a socio-economic survey on cocoa certification outcomes and observed many cocoa plantations being converted into oil palm and maize. Including our field data as well as secondary data on commodity prices and yields, we outline reasons for cocoa conversion, potential consequences for biodiversity, and assess the future outlook for the Indonesian cocoa sector. Low cocoa productivity, volatile cocoa prices and higher revenue for oil palm, among others, drive land-use change. If shade trees are cut during cocoa conversion, it may have negative implications for biodiversity. Solutions to low soil fertility, omnipresent pests and diseases, and stable producer prices are needed to increase profitability of cocoa and prevent conversion of cocoa agroforests to oil palm monocultures. Decreasing landslide fatalities is an ongoing global goal. This study identifies factors that decreased the number of landslide fatalities from the 1945 to 1967 events and from the 1967 to 2018 events in Kure City, Japan. The numbers of fatalities (NF), landslides (NL), and collapsed houses (NH) were collected, and changes in NF and three features of NF (i.e., NL, NH/NL, and NF/NH) were examined for debris flows and steep-slope failures. Many check dams were constructed from 1945 to 1967, and NH/NL was smaller in 1967 than in 1945. Consequently, NF caused by debris flows was considerably smaller in 1967. The forest growing stock increased drastically from 1967 to 2018, and NL was smaller in 2018 than in 1967. In addition, NF/NH was smaller in 2018 than in 1967 because of the decrease in the average number of household members and the increase in the ratio of residential buildings built with non-wooden materials. Consequently, NF caused by steep-slope failures dropped to zero in 2018. Accordingly, the factors decreasing NF differed between 1945–1967 and 1967–2018. Although this difference has been observed throughout Japan, the timing of each factor contributing to the reduction in NF in Kure City differed from that observed for Japan overall. Kure City has experienced more severe landslide events and population reduction than other areas in Japan. Understanding the factors affecting landslide fatalities in Kure City could help in the mitigation of landslide disasters in other regions of Japan and worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exploring and predicting the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and driving forces of carbon storage in typical mountain forest ecosystems under land-use changes is crucial for curbing the effects of climate change and fostering sustainable, eco-friendly growth. The existing literature provides important references for our related studies but further expansion and improvements are needed in some aspects. This study first proposed an integrated framework comprising gray multi-objective optimization (GMOP), Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST), the Patch-level Land Use Simulation Model (PLUS), and optimal parameter-based geographical detector (OPGD) models to further expand and improve on existing research. Then, the integrated model was used to analyze the spatial–temporal variation in land-use pattern and carbon storage at the county scale in China's Daiyun Mountain's Rim under four scenarios in 2032, and analyze the driving force of spatial differentiation of carbon storage. The results indicated that (1) land-use change primarily involves the mutual transfer among forest, cultivated, and construction land, with approximately 7.2% of the land-use type area undergoing a transition; (2) in 2032, the natural development scenario projects a significant reduction in forest land and an expansion of cultivated, shrub, and construction lands. Conversely, the economic priority, ecological priority, and economic–ecological coordinated scenarios all anticipate a decline in cultivated land area; (3) in 2032, the natural development scenario will see a 2.8 Tg drop in carbon stock compared to 2022. In contrast, the economic priority, ecological priority, and economic–ecological coordinated scenarios are expected to increase carbon storage by 0.29 Tg, 2.62 Tg, and 1.65 Tg, respectively; (4) the spatial differentiation of carbon storage is jointly influenced by various factors, with the annual mean temperature, night light index, elevation, slope, and population density being the key influencing factors. In addition, the influence of natural factors on carbon storage is diminishing, whereas the impact of socioeconomic factors is on the rise. This study deepened, to a certain extent, the research on spatiotemporal dynamics simulation of carbon storage and its driving mechanisms under land-use changes in mountainous forest ecosystems. The results can serve to provide scientific support for carbon balance management and climate adaptation strategies at the county scale while also offering case studies that can inform similar regions around the world. However, several limitations remain, as follows: the singularity of carbon density data, and the research scope being confined to small-scale mountainous forest ecosystems. Future studies could consider collecting continuous annual soil carbon density data and employing land-use simulation models (such as PLUS or CLUMondo) appropriate to the study area's dimensions. Regarding the carbon emission performance of urbanization, the changes in carbon emissions and carbon sinks have attracted particular attention, while the internal impact mechanism has been under-researched. Conventionally, urbanization has either improved or hindered carbon performance. However, this is not always the case as the paths of urbanization affecting carbon emission performance are diverse. Hence, this paper proposes a theoretical framework to investigate how urbanization influences carbon emission performance, specifically the indirect effects of land development/land-use efficiency, by taking the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, China, as a study case. Empirical results show that urbanization improves carbon emission performance due to the agglomeration effect. As an intermediary pathway, land-use change has a two-sided impact on carbon emission performance. Urbanization can both worsen and improve carbon emission performance through increasing land-development intensity and promoting land-use efficiency, respectively. However, the positive impact of land-use efficiency can alleviate the problem of increasing carbon emissions caused by land over-development. Coal mining in Shanxi Province for many years has caused regional land-use changes, seriously affecting the local ecological environment. To promote the green and sustainable development of this area and achieve the goal of "double carbon", the PLUS-InVEST model was used to analyze the nearly 20 year land-use types transfer and carbon storage changes in the region based on the five periods of land-use data of Shanxi Province from 2002 to 2022 in this study. Three scenarios were set up to predict the data in 2032, and the driving forces of spatial differentiation of the carbon storage were analyzed by geographical detector. The results showed that: (1) Land-use change had an important impact on carbon storage. Construction land in Shanxi Province expanded by 3068.47 km2 from 2002 to 2022, an increase of 59.33%, and the rest of the land types, except for forest, continued to decrease, resulting in a decline in total carbon storage of 228.88 × 104 t. (2) The natural development scenario shows the same transfer of land as before in 2032. Under the urban development scenario, the expansion of construction land in Shanxi Province is the largest, and carbon storage decreases instead of increasing; under the ecological protection scenario forest and grassland increase, and carbon storage increase the most, with a value of 738.67 × 104 t. (3) The dominant driving factors for the spatial differentiation of carbon storage in Shanxi Province were the land-use degree comprehensive index and night light index, with the explanatory power of 0.866 and 0.755, respectively, and the interaction of the land-use degree comprehensive index with other factors had the most significant effect on the change of carbon storage. The study suggested that the expansion of construction land into high carbon storage categories was the main reason for the loss of carbon storage, and Shanxi Province should optimize the land-use structure and adopt ecological protection works to increase carbon storage effectively. Soil microorganisms play pivotal roles in terrestrial ecological processes. However, how soil microbial biomass and community characteristics respond to changes in land utilization in karst regions remains largely unknown. The present study investigated the impacts of land-use change on soil chemical properties, microbial community structure, and biomass in a karst region of southwest China across four land-use types: shrubland (natural vegetation restoration), plantation forest (managed vegetation restoration), orchards, and croplands. Vegetation restoration increased microbial biomass carbon and microbial biomass nitrogen. Shrubland had the highest bacterial and fungal abundance and fungal diversity; in addition, the soil microbial community structure differed significantly among land-use types. The dominant bacterial phyla were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Chloroflexi, whereas Ascomycota was the predominant fungal phylum, with its abundance declining significantly following vegetation restoration. Soil properties, including soil organic matter and available phosphorus, were strongly associated with microbial community composition and diversity in karst areas. The findings of this study are essential for gaining a deeper understanding of how changes in land-use affect soil properties and microbial dynamics, and provide valuable insights for ecological restoration and agricultural management in karst regions. Stingless bees are key pollinators of both wild plants and crops in tropical Asia and are exploited for honey production and pollination services. Despite their importance, little is known about their habitat preferences in anthropogenic landscapes. We aimed to identify critical environmental variables influencing the distribution of six genera of Asian stingless bees as well as the overall stingless bee community, to identify suitable and core anthropogenic habitats, and to identify priority habitats for conservation in Thailand. We adopted a range of modeling approaches to estimate habitat suitability based on key environmental variables such as landscape features, climate, topography, and vegetation. Our results indicate that the habitat suitability for stingless bee community is strongly influenced by landscape factors including distance to nearest forest, proportions of paddy fields, forest, field crops, and villages. Among the six genera studied, Tetragonula showed the largest areas of suitable anthropogenic habitats. This may be because Tetragonula is the most diverse and widespread of all Old World stingless bees. For the overall stingless bee community, suitable anthropogenic habitats (defined as areas with a probability of occurrence > 0.195, with this threshold determined by maximizing the sum of sensitivity and specificity), and core anthropogenic habitats (defined as areas with a probability of occurrence > 0.9), accounted for 19.06% and 0.09% of the country’s area, respectively. Approximately 2% of the country’s land are considered high-priority habitats that are suitable for at least 4 genera of stingless bees (defined as areas with a probability of occurrences > 0.5) across human-modified landscapes. However, since this study could not distinguish between wild and managed populations, the findings likely reflect both the ability of stingless bees to persist in human-modified landscapes and the potential influence of beekeeping activities. Implications for insect conservation: Our findings can guide decision makers to support actions toward protecting and sustainably managing this important pollinator group, Asian stingless bees, particularly in response to ongoing environmental changes. Abstract Background Carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere (CDR) is a critical component of strategies for restricting global warming to 1.5°C and is expected to come largely from the sequestration of carbon in vegetation. Because CDR rates have been declining in the United States, in part due to land use changes, policy proposals are focused on altering land uses, through afforestation, avoided deforestation, and no-net-loss strategies. Estimating policy effects requires a careful assessment of how land uses interact with forest conditions to determine future CDR. Results We evaluate how alternative specifications of land use-forest condition interactions in the United States affect projections of CDR using a model that mirrors land sector net emission inventories generated by the US government (EPA). Without land use change, CDR declines from 0.826 GT/yr in 2017 to 0.596 GT/yr in 2062 (28%) due to forest aging and disturbances. For a land use scenario that extends recent rates of change, we compare CDR estimated based on net changes in land use (Net Change model) and estimates that separately account for the distinct CDR implications of forest losses and forest gains (Component Change model). The Net Change model, a common specification, underestimates the CDR losses of land use by about 56% when compared with the Component Change models. We also estimate per hectare CDR losses from deforestation and gains from afforestation and find that afforestation gains lag deforestation losses in every ecological province in the US. Conclusions Net Change approaches substantially underestimate the impact of land use change on CDR and should be avoided. Component Change models highlight that avoided deforestation may provide up to twice the CDR benefits as increased afforestation—though preference for one policy over the other would require a cost assessment. The disparities in the CDR impacts of afforestation and deforestation indicate that no-net-loss policies could mitigate some CDR losses but would lead to overall declines in CDR for our 45-year time horizon. Over a much longer period afforestation could capture more of the losses from deforestation but at a timeframe inconsistent with most climate change policy efforts.

Abstract Coastal areas are at the centre of human–nature relationship, shaped by recreation, tourism and aesthetic values. However, socioeconomic drivers of biodiversity change in coastal areas have received less attention. Soft sediment seafloors support diverse species communities and contribute to ecosystem functionality. One of the main threats is dredging, which sweeps resident organisms. Dredgings are commonly done to deepen waterways, but also for the purposes of private housing. The ecological impacts of these small‐sized dredgings are not well known over broad environmental and geographical gradients. We developed a simple approach for spatial integration of ecological and socioeconomic system, to describe how recreational land use change contributes to the loss of marine biodiversity. It shows how human behaviour, such as preference for a location of second home, can be derived from spatial data and coupled with ecological change. We characterize typical locations of second homes based on accessibility, aesthetics and environment, and with the information identified suitable areas for new second homes. We also quantified typical areas of dredging, based on the depth and substrate of the sea floor, and the extent of the reed beds, influencing the access to properties. We then simulate an annual increase of new second homes and expected land‐use change, namely dredging of shores. Finally, we quantified the realized and projected loss of marine biodiversity from dredged sites, based on species distribution models, relying on extensive ecological data collected from over 170,000 underwater sites. We found that small‐sized dredging can be detrimental to coastal biodiversity, as dredging targets shallow, photic bays and lagoons, with diverse algal and aquatic plant communities, with limited recovery potential. Dredgings also had broad impacts on benthic faunal habitats, which maintain ecosystem processes and functions. Our results reveal a significant ecological change driven by recreational land use. Reversing the trend of biodiversity loss requires a holistic understanding of socioecological systems. Our results highlight the need for integrating land–sea interactions into conservation policies and reforming current land‐use regulation for the benefit of marine biodiversity. Introduction: Regional carbon storage is a significant indicator of ecosystem service functions. Examining the impact of changes in land use on carbon stock in the Chang-Zhu-Tan urban agglomeration under different topographic reliefs is paramount for sustainable land resource utilization and realizing carbon peaking and neutrality goals. Methods: This study focuses on the Chang-Zhu-Tan urban agglomeration, using the InVEST model in combination with land use data to explore the distribution pattern of land use change and carbon storage from the perspective of topographic relief. Results: The research results show that:(1) the optimal analysis window for topographic reliefs in the study area is 17 × 17, covering an area of 0.26 km², with an average topographic relief of 78.58 m. (2) Between 2000 and 2020, Cultivated land and forest land decreased by 592.27 km² and 421.5 km², respectively, while the built-up land area increased by 982.36 km². (3) Due to human activities, carbon stock in the study area showed a decreasing trend, with a total reduction of 13.37 × 106 tons over the past 20 years. (4) The distribution of carbon stock across topographic reliefs mainly exhibits low-value and moderate-value carbon stock concentrations in flat and slightly undulating areas. In contrast, moderately high-value and high-value carbon stock concentrations are concentrated in gently and moderately undulating areas. Discussion: These research findings provide a scientific foundation for optimizing the spatial pattern of the study area and formulating carbon peak and carbon-neutral policies. Analysing the patterns and impacts of land-use changes in the production–living–ecological space (PLES) of the Fenhe River Basin (FRB 39,721 km2), China, is necessary to support sustainable development. Based on remote sensing images from 1990 to 2020, we aimed to analyse the PLES land-use changes. Industrial production and living spaces continuously encroached on the agricultural production and ecological spaces between 1990 and 2022 owing to industrialisation and urbanisation, and the ecological land area decreased by 699.21 km2, while the industrial production land area increased by 521.32 km2. We used the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model to quantitatively analyse the impact of PLES changes on runoff in the FRB. With the continuous expansion of production and living spaces, the extensive use of concrete in cities has led to ground hardening, making it difficult for precipitation to infiltrate, with surface runoff increasing by 0.3 mm annually. The reduction in ecological space has led to a reduction in forests and grasslands, weakening the water-holding capacity of the watershed and affecting groundwater storage. Exploring alternative land-uses, particularly alternatives to traditional productivist systems, is a key part of the transition towards sustainable future agricultural systems. However, decision-making around agricultural suitability and land use is complex and has far reaching implications that extend beyond the farm gate across to the catchment, region, and along the value chain. For Māori land decision-makers and governors this complexity is increased due to unique challenges, including the complex land tenure system governing Māori freehold land, alongside the multiple and often conflicting objectives of the high numbers of landowners. There is a diverse range of expertise amongst Māori land entities and decision-makers, with smaller and medium-sized entities often unable to access the expertise and information required for quality decision-making. This paper presents Pohewa Pae Tawhiti (Visualising Horizons), a prototype multi-model framework led by Te Arawa Arataua to support decisions around alternative land-use options. This framework integrates modelled data and guided discussion processes to address a gap in theory and practice in a culturally consistent land-use decision-making framework. Biogeographic context, such as biome type, has a critical influence on ecological resilience, as climatic and environmental conditions impact how communities respond to anthropogenic threats. For example, land‐use change causes a greater loss of biodiversity in tropical biomes compared to temperate biomes. Furthermore, the nature of threats impacting ecosystems varies geographically. Therefore, monitoring the state of biodiversity at a high spatial resolution is crucial to capture variation in threat–responses caused by biogeographical context. However such fine‐scale ecological data collection could be prohibitively resource intensive. In this study, we aim to find the spatial scale that could best capture variation in community‐level threat responses whilst keeping data collection requirements feasible. Using a database of biodiversity records with extensive global coverage, we modelled species richness and total abundance (the responses) across land‐use types (reflecting threats), considering three different spatial scales: biomes, biogeographical realms, and regional biomes (the interaction between realm and biome). We then modelled data from three highly sampled biomes to ask how responses to threat differ between regional biomes and taxonomic group. We found strong support for regional biomes in explaining variation in species richness and total abundance compared to biomes or realms alone. Our biome case studies demonstrate that there is variation in magnitude and direction of threat responses across both regional biomes and taxonomic group, although the interpretation is limited by sampling bias in the literature. All groups in tropical forest showed a consistently negative response, whilst many taxon‐regional biome groups showed no clear response to threat in temperate forest and tropical grassland. Our results provide the first empirical evidence that the taxon‐regional biome unit has potential as a reasonable spatial unit for monitoring how ecological communities respond to threats and designing effective conservation interventions to bend the curve on biodiversity loss. Land-use change is a main threat to biodiversity due to its impact on habitats, especially for species that inhabit mountainous regions. In the face of this, an adequate management requires knowledge of species habitat requirements, but in Chile, few studies have analyzed these requirements in a vulnerable group like reptiles in anthropized environments. A situation relevant to this problem is the Andes of Chile, which are facing increasing levels of anthropization that could affect species such as Liolaemus nigroviridis, a lizard that inhabits areas where urbanization, skiing, livestock, and waste have been increasing. However, there is no available information on the impact of these activities on this species. To analyze the effect of anthropization on L. nigroviridis, a study of habitat use with anthropogenic and natural resources was carried out through the analysis of resource selection indices (in Farellones, central Chile). Our results show that L. nigroviridis is affected by constructions; above a threshold of 15% of built environment, the species is not present. However, small-scale livestock, waste, and roads showed no apparent effects on the species. We concluded that urbanization is one of the main threats to this lizard in Farellones, since it is a determining factor for its presence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Seasonality governs species composition at a given place and time. However, the effects of climate and land‐use change can vary by season, altering species composition. These changes can lead to a loss of distinct seasonal community composition, representing a novel form of biotic homogenisation. We ask if breeding and winter bird communities are becoming more similar over time. If so, is homogenisation occurring more rapidly in winter than in the breeding season, and has the presence of individual species changed between seasons? Location: Northeastern United States. Time Period: 1989–2019. Major Taxa Studied: Two hundred thirty‐eight bird species. Methods: We use data from The National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count and the North American Breeding Bird Survey to test if winter and breeding bird communities have become more similar (homogenised). We evaluate this change using the Sørensen dissimilarity index, and its components of turnover (species replacement) and nestedness (a subset of a more species rich community) and describe the mechanism in which the seasonal winter and breeding bird communities are changing. Results: We found that winter and breeding bird communities are homogenising, driven by significant decrease in turnover and a marginal decrease nestedness. When viewing breeding and wintering communities separately, we observe different trends. Breeding communities are becoming more unique with decreasing turnover and nestedness. Winter communities are becoming more similar to each other, with decreasing turnover and nestedness. More breeding species are declining and species that are typically found in the winter and year‐round residents are the main contributors to the homogenisation between seasons. Main Conclusions: We show for the first time homogenisation between winter and breeding bird communities over time across the northeastern United States. This insight into how individual species are faring between seasons, and how they impact community structure, can be used when implementing conservation measures for maintaining ecological functioning and integrity. In Indonesia, the rapid expansion of oil palm and rubber plantations replaces large areas of tropical rainforest. Rainforest transformation alters the diversity and composition of parasitoid wasp communities, but appropriate management strategies to buffer their decline in rainforest transformation landscapes are not yet developed.Here, we studied the effects of rainforest conversion to smallholder rubber and oil palm plantations on parasitoid wasp species richness, abundance and species composition. We also conducted a flowering vegetation enrichment experiment using the flowering weed Asystasia gangetica in all land‐uses to investigate potential mitigation effects on parasitoid wasp diversity and composition.Rainforest transformation to rubber plantations caused a large decrease in species richness (46%) and abundance (59%) of parasitoid wasps. Community structure of parasitoid wasps differed between forest and monoculture habitats with more habitat‐specialised species in forest and a higher proportion of common species in the monoculture.The experimental flowering vegetation enrichment increased parasitoid wasp species richness by 18% and abundance by 127%. Enrichment also enhanced the presence of unique parasitoid species in plantation and furthermore increased differences in community composition between rainforest and plantations. However, the enrichment experiment was confounded by time, meaning that a multi‐year experiment with targeted controls is necessary for statistically more reliable statements.Our study shows the effect of rainforest transformation to oil palm and rubber plantations on parasitoid wasp communities. Although providing additional flowering vegetation in plantations seems to potentially mitigate diversity loss, further research is needed to confirm and to investigate the mechanisms how flowering plants alleviate negative effects of rainforest transformation on parasitoid communities. Woody plants are encroaching across terrestrial ecosystems globally, and this has dramatic effects on how these systems function and the livelihoods of producers who rely on the land to support livestock production. Consequently, the removal of woody plants is promoted widely in the belief that it will reinstate former grasslands or open savanna. Despite this popular management approach to encroachment, we still have a relatively poor understanding of the effects of removal on society, and of alternative management practices that could balance the competing needs of pastoral production, biodiversity conservation and cultural values. This information is essential for maintaining both ecological and societal benefits in encroached systems under predicted future climate changes. In this review, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the social–ecological perspectives of woody encroachment based on recent studies and global meta‐analyses by assessing the ecological impacts of encroachment and its effects on sustainable development goals (SDGs) when woody plants are retained and when they are removed. We propose a working definition of woody encroachment based on species‐ and community‐level characteristics; such a definition is needed to evaluate accurately the effects of encroachment. We show that encroachment is a natural process of succession rather than a sign of degradation, with encroachment resulting in an overall 8% increase in ecosystem multifunctionality. Removing woody plants can increase herbaceous plant richness, biomass and cover, but at the expense of biocrust cover. The effectiveness of woody plant removal depends on plant identity, and where, when and how they are removed. Under current management practices, either removal or retention of woody plants can induce trade‐offs among ecosystem services, with no management practice maximising all SDGs [e.g. SDG2 (end hunger), SDG13 (climate change), SDG 15 (combat desertification)]. Given that encroachment of woody plants is likely to increase under future predicted hotter and drier climates, alternative management options such as carbon farming and ecotourism could be effective land uses for areas affected by encroachment. Understanding human activity and global climate change requires an understanding of the impact of land-use change on carbon storage. Nevertheless, the number of studies examining carbon storage in complex terrain areas remains relatively limited. This study quantified land use shifts and carbon storage variations from 2010 to 2030 in the Sichuan–Chongqing region in China by combining InVEST and PLUS models. The results show that (1) the Sichuan–Chongqing region exhibits a predominantly concentrated pattern of land utilization, with forests occupying a dominant position among various land types in the locality. (2) The total carbon storage loss between 2010 and 2020 is 24.19 Tg. Except for the ecological development scenario, compared to 2020, all multi-scenario projections show less carbon storage in 2030. (3) The primary cause of carbon loss is the sprawl of built-up areas into farmlands, forests, and grasslands. (4) The geomorphology of complex terrain greatly affects carbon storage; flat terrain tends to be less carbon-intensive than more steeply sloping terrain.
