The use of neural networks to solve differential equations, as an alternative to traditional numerical solvers, has increased recently. However, error bounds for the obtained solutions have only been developed for certain equations. In this work, we report important progress in calculating error bounds of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) solutions of nonlinear first-order ODEs. We give a general expression that describes the error of the solution that the PINN-based method provides for a nonlinear first-order ODE. In addition, we propose a technique to calculate an approximate bound for the general case and an exact bound for a particular case. The error bounds are computed using only the residual information and the equation structure. We present a comprehensive analysis of statistical tools for evaluating tensions in cosmological parameter estimates arising from distinct datasets. Focusing on the unresolved Hubble constant ($H_0$) tension, we explore the Pantheon Plus + SH0ES (PPS) compilation, which includes low-redshift Cepheid data from the SH0ES collaboration, along with the latest release of CMB data from the Planck collaboration, Cosmic Chronometers (CC) dataset and the most recent Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) datasets. Employing various tension metrics, we quantitatively assess the inconsistencies in parameter estimates, emphasizing the importance of capturing multidimensional tensions. Our results reveal substantial tension between PPS and Planck 2018 datasets and moderate tension between the BAO data sets and all other datasets. We highlight the importance of adopting these metrics to enhance the precision of future cosmological analyses and facilitate the resolution of existing tensions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables

In the last few years, there has been significant progress in the development of machine learning methods tailored to astrophysics and cosmology. We have recently applied one of these, namely, the neural network bundle method, to the cosmological scenario. Moreover, we showed that in some cases the computational times of the Bayesian inference process can be reduced. In this paper, we present an improvement to the neural network bundle method that results in a significant reduction of the computational times of the statistical analysis. The novel aspect consists of the use of the neural network bundle method to calculate the luminosity distance of type Ia supernovae, which is usually computed through an integral with numerical methods. In this work, we have applied this improvement to the Hu-Sawicki and Starobinsky $f(R)$ models. We also performed a statistical analysis with data from type Ia supernovae of the Pantheon+ compilation and cosmic chronometers. Another original aspect of this work is the different treatment we provide for the absolute magnitude of type Ia supernovae during the inference process, which results in different estimates of the distortion parameter than the ones obtained in the literature. We show that the statistical analyses carried out with our new method require lower computational times than the ones performed with both the numerical and the neural network method from our previous work. This reduction in time is more significant in the case of a difficult computational problem such as the ones addressed in this work., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

A discrete space-time structure lying at about the Planck scale may become manifest in the form of very small violations of the conservation of the matter energy-momentum tensor. In order to include such kind of violations, forbidden within the General Relativity framework, the theory of unimodular gravity seems as the simplest option to describe the gravitational interaction. In the cosmological context, a direct consequence of such violation of energy conservation might be heuristically viewed a "diffusion process of matter (both dark and ordinary)" into an effective dark energy term in Einstein's equations, which leads under natural assumptions to an adequate estimate for the value of the cosmological constant. Previous works have also indicated that these kind of models might offer a natural scenario to alleviate the Hubble tension. In this work, we consider a simple model for thecosmological history including a late time occurrence of such energy violation and study the modifications of the predictions for the anisotropy and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We compare the model's predictions with recent data from the CMB, Supernovae Type Ia, cosmic chronometers and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. The field of machine learning has drawn increasing interest from various other fields due to the success of its methods at solving a plethora of different problems. An application of these has been to train artificial neural networks to solve differential equations without the need of a numerical solver. This particular application offers an alternative to conventional numerical methods, with advantages such as lower memory required to store solutions, parallelization, and, in some cases, a lower overall computational cost than its numerical counterparts. In this work, we train artificial neural networks to represent a bundle of solutions of the differential equations that govern the background dynamics of the Universe for four different models. The models we have chosen are $\Lambda \mathrm{CDM}$, the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametric dark energy model, a quintessence model with an exponential potential, and the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ model. We use the solutions that the networks provide to perform statistical analyses to estimate the values of each model's parameters with observational data; namely, estimates of the Hubble parameter from cosmic chronometers, type Ia supernovae data from the Pantheon compilation, and measurements from baryon acoustic oscillations. The results we obtain for all models match similar estimations done in the literature using numerical solvers. In addition, we estimate the error of the solutions that the trained networks provide by comparing them with the analytical solution when there is one, or to a high-precision numerical solution when there is not. Through these estimations we find that the error of the solutions is at most $\sim1\%$ in the region of the parameter space that concerns the $95\%$ confidence regions that we find using the data, for all models and all statistical analyses performed in this work., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 10 tables, supplemental material available at https://github.com/at-chantada/Supplemental-Materials

Recently, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) have been proposed as standardizable candles, thanks to an observed non-linear relation between their X-ray and optical-ultraviolet (UV) luminosities, which provides an independent measurement of their distances. In this paper, we use these observables for the first time to estimate the parameters of f(R) gravity models (specifically the Hu-Sawicki and the exponential models) together with the cosmological parameters. The importance of this type of modified gravity theories lies in the fact that they can explain the late time accelerated expansion of the universe without the inclusion of a dark energy component. We have also included other observable data to the analyses such as estimates of the Hubble parameter H(z) from Cosmic Chronometers, the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae compilation, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations measurements. Our results show that the allowed space parameter is restricted when both AGN and BAO data are added to CC and SnIa data, being the BAO data set the most restrictive one. We can also conclude that even though our results are consistent with the ones from the LCDM model, small deviations from General Relativity, than can be successfully described by the f(R) models studied in this paper, are also allowed by the considered data sets., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We analyse the MOdified Gravity (MOG) theory, proposed by Moffat, in a cosmological context. We use data from Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Cosmic Chronometers (CC) to test MOG predictions. For this, we perform $\chi^2$ tests considering fixed values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, the self-interaction potential of one of the scalar fields in the theory. Our results show that the MOG theory is in agreement with all data sets for some particular values of $H_0$ and $V_G$, being the BAO data set the most powerful tool to test MOG predictions, due to its constraining power., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, replaced to match published version

Using a novel and self-consistent approach that avoids the scalar-tensor identification in the Einstein frame, we reanalyze the viability of f(R) gravity within the context of solar-system tests. In order to do so, we depart from a simple but fully relativistic system of differential equations that describe a compact object in a static and spherically symmetric spacetime, and then we make suitable linearizations that apply to nonrelativistic objects such as the Sun. We then show clearly under which conditions the emerging chameleonlike mechanism can lead to a post-Newtonian parameter {\gamma} compatible with the observational bounds. To illustrate this method, we use several specific f(R) models proposed to explain the current acceleration of the Universe, and we show which of them are able to satisfy those bounds., Comment: accepted in Phys. Theories that attempt to unify the four fundamental interactions and alternative theories of gravity predict time and/or spatial variation of the fundamental constants of nature. Different versions of these theories predict different behaviours for these variations. In consequence, experimental and observational bounds are an important tool to check the validity of such proposals. In this paper, we review constraints on the possible variation of the fundamental constants from astronomical observations and geophysical experiments designed to test the constancy of the fundamental constants of nature over different timescales. In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 97, 104044 (2018)] we pointed out some shortcomings of the standard approach to chameleon theories consisting in treating the small bodies used to test the weak equivalence principle (WEP) as test particles, whose presence do not modify the chameleon field configuration. In that paper we developed an alternative method to determine the relevant field configuration which takes into account the influence of both test and source bodies, and computed the chamaleon mediated force. Relying on that analysis we showed that the effective acceleration of test bodies is composition dependent even when the model is based on universal couplings. In this paper, we improve our method by using a more suitable approximation for the effective chameleon potential in situations where the bodies are in the so-called "thick shell regime". We then find new and more restrictive bounds on the model' s parametres by confronting the new theoretical predictions with the empirical bounds on E\"otv\"os parameter comming from the lunar laser ranging experiments., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by PRD

The physical mechanism responsible for the emergence of primordial cosmic seeds from a perfect isotropic and homogeneous Universe has not been fully addressed in standard cosmic inflation. To handle this shortcoming, D. Sudarsky et al have developed a proposal: the self-induced collapse hypothesis. In this scheme, the objective collapse of the inflaton's wave function generates the inhomogeneity and anisotropy at all scales. In this paper we analyze the viability of a set of inflationary potentials in both the context of the collapse proposal and within the standard inflationary framework. For this, we perform a statistical analysis using recent CMB and BAO data to obtain the prediction for the scalar spectral index $n_s$ in the context of a particular collapse model: the Wigner scheme. The predicted $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ in terms of the slow roll parameters is different between the collapse scheme and the standard inflationary model. For each potential considered we compare the prediction of $n_s$ and $r$ with the limits established by observational data in both pictures. The result of our analysis shows in most cases a difference in the inflationary potentials allowed by the observational limits in both frameworks. In particular, in the standard approach the more concave a potential is, the more is favored by the data. On the other hand, in the Wigner scheme, the data favors equally all type of concave potentials, including those at the border between convex and concave families., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures

Since Dirac stated his Large Number Hypothesis the space-time variation of fundamental constants has been an active subject of research. Here we analyze the possible spatial variation of two fundamental constants: the fine structure constant {\alpha} and the speed of light c. We study the effects of such variations on the luminosity distance and on the peak luminosity of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). For this, we consider the change of each fundamental constant separately and discuss a dipole model for its variation. Elaborating upon our previous work, we take into account the variation of the peak luminosity of Type Ia supernovae resulting from the variation of each of these fundamental constants. Furthermore, we also include the change of the energy release during the explosion, which was not studied before in the literature. We perform a statistical analysis to compare the predictions of the dipole model for {\alpha} and c variation with the Union2.1 and JLA compilations of SNe Ia. For this, we also allow the nuisance parameters of the distance estimator $\mu_0$ and the cosmological density matter $\Omega_m$ to vary. As a result of our analysis we obtain a first estimate of the possible spatial variation of the speed of light c. On the other hand, we find that there is no significant difference between the several phenomenological models studied here and the standard cosmological model, in which fundamental constants do not vary at all. Thus, we conclude that the actual set of data of Type Ia supernovae does not allow to verify the hypothetical spatial variation of fundamental constants., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures. The hypothesis of the self-induced collapse of the inflaton wave function was introduced as a candidate for the physical process responsible for the emergence of inhomogeneity and anisotropy at all scales. In particular, we consider different proposal for the precise form of the dynamics of the inflaton wave function: i) the GRW-type collapse schemes proposals based on spontaneous individual collapses which generate non-vanishing expectation values of various physical quantities taken as ansatz modifications of the standard inflationary scenario; ii) the proposal based on a Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) type modification of the Schr\"odinger evolution of the inflaton wave function, based on a natural choice of collapse operator. We perform a systematic analysis within the semi-classical gravity approximation, of the standing of those models considering a full quasi-de sitter expansion scenario. We note that the predictions for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization spectrum differ slightly from those of the standard cosmological model. We also analyse these proposals with a Bayesian model comparison using recent CMB and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data. Our results show a moderate preference of the joint CMB and BAO data for one of the studied collapse schemes model over the $\Lambda$CDM one, while there is no preference when only CMB data are considered. Additionally, analysis using CMB data provide the same Bayesian evidence for both the CSL and standard models, i.e. the data have not preference between the simplicity of the LCDM model and the complexity of the collapse scenario.

The hypothesis of the self-induced collapse of the inflaton wave function was proposed as responsible for the emergence of inhomogeneity and anisotropy at all scales. This proposal was studied within an almost de Sitter space-time approximation for the background, which led to a perfect scale-invariant power spectrum, and also for a quasi-de Sitter background, which allows to distinguish departures from the standard approach due to the inclusion of the collapse hypothesis. In this work we perform a Bayesian model comparison for two different choices of the self-induced collapse in a full quasi-de Sitter expansion scenario. In particular, we analyze the possibility of detecting the imprint of these collapse schemes at low multipoles of the anisotropy temperature power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) using the most recent data provided by the Planck Collaboration. Our results show that one of the two collapse schemes analyzed provides the same Bayesian evidence of the minimal standard cosmological model $\Lambda$CDM, while the other scenario is weakly disfavoured with respect to the standard cosmology., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

The Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) model has been proposed as a possible solution to the quantum measurement problem by modifying the Schr\"{o}dinger equation. In this work, we apply the CSL model to two cosmological models of the early Universe: the matter bounce scenario and slow roll inflation. In particular, we focus on the generation of the classical primordial inhomogeneities and anisotropies that arise from the dynamical evolution, provided by the CSL mechanism, of the quantum state associated to the quantum fields. In each case, we obtained a prediction for the shape and the parameters characterizing the primordial spectra (scalar and tensor), i.e. the amplitude, the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We found that there exist CSL parameter values, allowed by other non-cosmological experiments, for which our predictions for the angular power spectrum of the CMB temperature anisotropy are consistent with the best fit canonical model to the latest data released by the Planck Collaboration., Comment: 27 pages, including 6 figures, 2 tables and one Appendix. Most theories that predict time and/or space variation of fundamental constants also predict violations of the Weak Equivalence Principle. In 2004 Khoury and Weltman proposed the so called chameleon field arguing that it could help avoiding experimental bounds on the WEP while having a non-trivial cosmological impact. In this paper we revisit the extent to which these expectations continue to hold as we enter the regime of high precision tests. The basis of the study is the development of a new method for computing the force between two massive bodies induced by the chameleon field which takes into account the influence on the field by both, the large and the test bodies. We confirm that in the thin shell regime the force does depend non-trivially on the test body\' s composition, even when the chameleon coupling constants are universal. We also propose a simple criterion based on energy minimization, that we use to determine which of the approximations used in computing the scalar field in a two body problem is better in each specific regime. As an application of our analysis we then compare the resulting differential acceleration of two test bodies with the corresponding bounds obtained from E\"otv\"os type experiments. We consider two setups: 1) an Earth based experiment where the test bodies are made of Be and Al; 2) the Lunar Laser Ranging experiment. We find that for some choices of the free parameters of the chameleon model the predictions of the E\"otv\"os parameter are larger than some of the previous estimates. As a consequence, we put new constrains on these free parameters. "The self-induced collapse hypothesis" was introduced by D. The precise physical mechanism describing the emergence of the seeds of cosmic structure from a perfect isotropic and homogeneous universe has not been fully explained by the standard version of inflationary models. To handle this shortcoming, D. Sudarsky and collaborators have developed a proposal: the self-induced collapse hypothesis. In this scheme, the objective collapse of the inflaton wave function is responsible for the emergence of inhomogeneity and anisotropy at all scales. In the present article, we consider a full quasi-de Sitter expansion and calculate the primordial power spectrum for three different choices of the self-induced collapse. The consideration of a quasi-de Sitter background allow us to distinguish departures from an exact scale-invariant power spectrum that are due to the inclusion of the collapse hypothesis. These deviations are also different from the prediction of standard inflationary models with running spectral index. Comparison with the primordial power spectrum and the CMB temperature fluctuation spectrum preferred by the latest observational data is also discussed. The large-number hypothesis conjectures that fundamental constants may vary. Accordingly, the spacetime variation of fundamental constants has been an active subject of research for decades. Recently, using data obtained with large telescopes a phenomenological model in which the fine structure constant might vary spatially has been proposed. We test whether this hypothetical spatial variation of {\alpha}, which follows a dipole law, is compatible with the data of distant thermonuclear supernovae. Unlike previous works, in our calculations we consider not only the variation of the luminosity distance when a varying {\alpha} is adopted, but we also take into account the variation of the peak luminosity of Type Ia supernovae resulting from a variation of {\alpha}. This is done using an empirical relation for the peak bolometric magnitude of thermonuclear supernovae that correctly reproduces the results of detailed numerical simulations. We find that there is no significant difference between the several phenomenological models studied here and the standard one, in which {\alpha} does not vary spatially. We conclude that the present set of data of Type Ia supernovae is not able to distinguish the standard model from the dipole models, and thus cannot be used to discard nor to confirm the proposed spatial variation of {\alpha}., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. The emergence of the seeds of cosmic structure, from a perfect isotropic and homogeneous Universe, has not been clearly explained by the standard version of inflationary models as the dynamics involved preserve the homogeneity and isotropy at all times. A proposal that attempts to deal with this problem, by introducing "the self-induced collapse hypothesis," has been introduced by D. Sudarsky and collaborators in previous papers. In all these works, the collapse of the wave function of the inflaton mode is restricted to occur during the inflationary period. In this paper, we analyse the possibility that the collapse happens during the radiation era. A viable model can be constructed under the condition that the inflaton field variable must be affected by the collapse while the momentum variable can or cannot be affected. Another condition to be fulfilled is that the time of collapse must be independent of $k$. However, when comparing with recent observational data, the predictions of the model cannot be distinguished from the ones provided by the standard inflationary scenario. The main reason for this arises from the requirement that primordial power spectrum obtained for the radiation era matches the amplitude of scalar fluctuations consistent with the latest CMB observations. This latter constraint results in a limit on the possible times of collapse and ensures that the contribution of the inflaton field to the energy-momentum tensor is negligible compared to the contribution of the radiation fields., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures. We analyze the consistency of different astronomical data of the variation in the fine-structure constant obtained with KECK and VLT. We tested the consistency using the Student test and confidence intervals. We splited the data sets in to smaller intervals and grouped them acording to redshift and angular position. Another statistical analysis is proposed that considers phenomenological models for the variation in \alpha. Results show consistency for the reduced intervals for each pair of data sets and suggests that the variation in \alpha is significant at higher redshifts. We briefly review an important shortcoming --unearthed in previous works-- of the standard version of the inflationary model for the emergence of the seeds of cosmic structure. We consider here some consequences emerging from a proposal inspired on ideas of Penrose and Di\'osi about a quantum-gravity induced reduction of the wave function, which has been put forward to address the shortcomings, arguing that its effect on the inflaton field is what can lead to the emergence of the seeds of cosmic structure. The proposal leads to a deviation of the primordial spectrum from the scale-invariant Harrison-Zel'dovich one, and consequently, to a different CMB power spectrum. We perform statistical analyses to test two quantum collapse schemes with recent data from the CMB, including the 7-yr release of WMAP and the matter power spectrum measured using LRGs by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Results from the statistical analyses indicate that several collapse models are compatible with CMB and LRG data, and establish constraints on the free parameters of the models. The usual account for the origin of cosmic structure during inflation is not fully satisfactory, as it lacks a physical mechanism capable of generating the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of our Universe, from an exactly homogeneous and isotropic initial state associated with the early inflationary regime. The proposal in [A. Perez, H. Sahlmann, and D. Sudarsky, Classical Quantum Gravity, 23, 2317, (2006)] considers the spontaneous dynamical collapse of the wave function, as a possible answer to that problem. In this work, we review briefly the difficulties facing the standard approach, as well as the answers provided by the above proposal and explore their relevance to the investigations concerning the characterization of the primordial spectrum and other statistical aspects of the cosmic microwave background and large-scale matter distribution. We will see that the new approach leads to novel ways of considering some of the relevant questions, and, in particular, to distinct characterizations of the non-Gaussianities that might have left imprints on the available data., Comment: 27 pages. Seeking a possible explanation for recent data indicating a space-time variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio within the Milky Way, we consider a phenomenological model where the effective fermion masses depend on the local value of the Weyl tensor. We contrast the required values of the model's free parameters with bounds obtained from modern tests on the violation of the Weak Equivalence Principle and we find that these quantities are incompatible. This result indicates that the variation of nucleon and electron masses through a coupling with the Weyl tensor is not a viable model., Comment: 24 pages

We update the constraints on the time variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha$ and the electron mass $m_e$, using the latest CMB data, including the 7-yr release of WMAP. We made statistical analyses of the variation of each one of the constants and of their joint variation, together with the basic set of cosmological parameters. We used a modified version of CAMB and COSMOMC to account for these possible variations. We present bounds on the variation of the constants for different data sets, and show how results depend on them. When using the latest CMB data plus the power spectrum from Sloan Digital Sky Survey LRG, we find that $\alpha / \alpha_0=0.986 \pm 0.007$ at 1-$\sigma$ level, when the 6 basic cosmological parameters were fitted, and only variation in $\alpha$ was allowed. The constraints in the case of variation in both constants are $ \alpha / \alpha_0= 0.986 \pm 0.009$ and $m_e / m_{e0} = 0.999 \pm 0.035$. In the case of only variation in $m_e$, the bound is $m_e /m_{e0}=0.964 \pm 0.025$., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

We studied the role of fundamental constants in an updated recombination scenario, focusing on the time variation of the fine structure constant \alpha and the electron mass m_e in the early Universe. Using CMB data including WMAP 5-yr release, and the 2dFGRS power spectrum, we put bounds on variations of these constants, when both constants are allowed to vary, and in the case that only one of them is variable. In particular, we have found that -0.019 < \Delta \alpha / \alpha_0 < 0.017 (95% c.l.), in our joint estimation of \alpha and cosmological parameters. We study the time variation of fundamental constants in the early Universe. Using data from primordial light nuclei abundances, CMB and the 2dFGRS power spectrum, we put constraints on the time variation of the fine structure constant $\alpha$, and the Higgs vacuum expectation value $$ without assuming any theoretical framework. A variation in $$ leads to a variation in the electron mass, among other effects. Along the same line, we study the variation of $\alpha$ and the electron mass $m_e$. We analyze different data of the variation of the fine structure constant obtained with different methods to check their consistency.We test consistency using the modified Student test and confidence intervals. We split the data sets in smaller intervals. A criterion for this selection is proposed. Results show consistency for reduced intervals for each pair of data sets considered. We put limits on the time variation of the electron mass in the early universe using observational primordial abundances of D, He4 and Li7, recent data from the Cosmic Microwave Background and the 2dFGRS power spectrum. Furthermore, we use these constraints together with other astronomical and geophysical bounds from the late universe to test Barrow-Magueijo's model for the variation in m_e. We calculate bounds on the variation of the fine structure constant at the time of primordial nucleosynthesis and at the time of neutral hydrogen formation. We use these bounds and other bounds from the late universe to test Bekenstein model. We modify the Kawano code, CAMB and CosmoMC in order to include the possible variation of the fine structure constant. We use observational primordial abundances of $\De$, $\He$ and $\Li$, recent data from the Cosmic Microwave Background and the 2dFGRS power spectrum, to obtain bounds on the variation of $\alpha$. We calculate a piecewise solution to the scalar field equation of Bekenstein model in two different regimes; i) matter and radiation, ii) matter and cosmological constant. We match both solutions with appropriate boundary conditions. We perform a statistical analysis using the bounds obtained from the early universe and other bounds from the late universe to constrain the free parameters of the model. Results are consistent with no variation of $\alpha$ in the early universe. Limits on $\alpha$ are inconsistent with the scale length of the theory $l$ being larger than Planck scale. We use the semi-analytic method of \citet{Esma91} to calculate the abundances of Helium and Deuterium produced during Big Bang nucleosynthesis assuming the fine structure constant and the Higgs vacuum expectation value may vary in time. We analyze the dependence on the fundamental constants of the nucleon mass, nuclear binding energies and cross sections involved in the calculation of the abundances. Unlike previous works, we do not assume the chiral limit of QCD. Rather, we take into account the quark masses and consider the one-pion exchange potential, within perturbation theory, for the proton-neutron scattering. However, we do not consider the time variation of the strong interactions scale but attribute the changes in the quark masses to the temporal variation of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. The abundances of light elements as a function of the fundamental constants are obtained. Finally, using the observational data of $\De$, $\Het$, $\He$ and $\Li$ we estimate constraints on the variation of the fundamental constants between the primordial nucleosynthesis and the present. All observational abundances and the WMAP estimate of the baryon density, can be fitted to the theoretical predictions with varying coupling constants. We test the prediction of the time variation of the fine structure constant in the string dilaton model proposed by Damour and Polyakov. First, we analize the dependence of all available observational and experimental data with the fine structure constant variation. Furthermore, we obtain the prediction of the time variation of the fine structure constant including the renormalization group correction. Finally, we use the data set to perform a statistical analyisis. This analysis enables us to determine that the the dilaton model is in agreement with most of the data. We discuss observational constraints coming from CMB and type Ia supernovae, for the model of accelerated universe produced by gravitational leakage into extra dimensions. Our fits indicate that the model is currently in agreement with the data. We also give the equations governing the evolution of cosmological perturbations. The $TH\epsilon\mu$ formalism was developed to study nonmetric theories of gravitation. In this letter we show that theories that violate Local Lorentz Invariance (LLI) or Local Position Invariance (LPI) also violate charge conservation. Using upper bounds on this violation we can put very stringent limits to violations of Einstein Equivalence Principle (EEP).
