The fact that coronelismo was not a system of historically determined political dominance and that landownership was also not its foundation was studied, as coronel was regarded as the key personality in Brazilian politics under the Old Republic. The study has suggested avoiding the use of the term 'coronelismo' to describe a form of political domination and to consider that colonel and clients were a peculiar feature of the largest and oldest place of the outback of the Northeast.

The decline of the feudal system, the rise of estate formation, and the impact it had on judicial immunity of secular landholders in Poland and Russia are examined. The author maintains that while the two states were similar the social structure state authority differed, and argues that Polish landholders had more tax privileges than Russian landholders, however, the powers of secular lords from both states increased dramatically.
