The horizontal positional accuracy of Google Earth is assessed in the city of Montreal, Canada, using the precise coordinates of ten GPS points spatially distributed all over the city. The results show that the positional accuracy varies in the study area between ∼0.1 m in the south to ∼2.7 m in the north. Furthermore, two methods are developed for correcting the observed positional errors: (a) using a set of transformation parameters between true coordinates of the geodetic points and their coordinates in Google Earth, and by (b) interpolating the misfit vectors at the geodetic points. The former method reduces the overall accuracy to ∼67 cm RMSE, whereas the latter one practically removes all the distortion (RMSE = 1 cm). Both methods can be developed for other places in the world subject to availability of appropriate control points. In addition, a displacement problem caused by the topography of the area and the viewing angle of the imaging satellite is discussed, and it is shown that the true positions can be shifted even up to several meters, as a consequence.

lCette thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'amélioration des caractéristiques de robustesse des récepteurs numériques à spectre étalé de type GPS. On étudie d'abord les réglementations actuelles et leurs évolutions pour identifier les sources et la nature des brouilleurs. Puis l'impact d'un brouilleur est analysé et conduit à des critères de classifications et à la définition de différents seuils de brouillage relatifs au dysfonctionnement des divers composants du récepteur. Un cahier des charges est élaboré suite à l'identification des brouilleurs les plus pénalisants pour l'aviation civile. On étudie ensuite diverses techniques de pré-corrélation susceptibles d'apporter la robustesse nécessaire au prix d'une modification matérielle mineure. La première méthode consiste à seuiller les coefficients obtenus par décomposition du signal en ondelettes. On présente aussi un traitement non-linéaire du domaine des amplitudes (ADP) et finalement un filtrage à encoches adaptatif. Cette dernière technique est la plus prometteuse du point de vue d'une réalisation matérielle intégrale compte tenu des fortes limitations technologiques (en particulier une cadence de traitement élevée). Elle est donc plus spécialement étudiée: convergence, stabilité, précision, problèmes de quantification. Le filtre est constitué d'une cascade de cellules, chaque cellule comprenant un bloc d'élimination d'un brouilleur à bande étroite (réalisé dans un composant FPGA), et un bloc de détection et poursuite du brouilleur (réalisé dans un DSP). Ce filtre réflecteur puissant nommé "Filtre PIRANHA TXL" a été validé sur une simulation (logiciel COSSAP) d'un récepteur GPS complet. Une maquette a ensuite été réalisée et interfacée avec deux types de récepteur GPS du commerce. Les performances évaluées sur un banc expérimental (à SupAéro et au Département Navigation de l'ESTEC-ESA, Hollande) montrent l'excellent comportement des récepteurs intégrant le Filtre PIRANHA en présence de brouilleurs réels. Une réfection de l'ordre de 30 à 65dB (CAN de 10bits et coefficients sur 14bits) a été mesurée. Les largeurs de bande éliminées sont réglées entre 5 à 100KHz. En outre, le Filtre PIRANHA proposé n'introduit que 1dB de dégradation sur la corrélation en l'absence de brouilleur. This thesis deals with the improvement of Spread Spectrum Receivers’ jamming vulnerability especially the GPS receivers for aircraft navigation. We will first study the present regulations and their evolutions to identify the sources and the nature of the interference. Their impacts are analysed to define some classification criteria and to specify important jamming thresholds for GPS receivers. At the end of the study, the objective and the filter specifications are elaborated after the identification of the most harmful and penalising interference for civil aviation. Pre and post-correlation candidate mitigation techniques are then examined and selected pre-correlation techniques are recommended for adoption in appropriate standards, this adoption requiring the minimum GPS receiver hardware modifications. The first method consists in thresholding the coefficients obtained by wavelet decomposition. A non-linear technique named ADP (Amplitude Domain Processing) is also presented as well as an adaptive notch filter. The latter method is the most promising from a development point of view because of the strong technology limitations (especially very fast sampling rate). We study the filter structure in details: convergence, stability, precision, quantification problems, etc. The filter is built with a strategically cascaded form of cells, each cell containing a rejection block for narrow band rejection (implemented in a FPGA), and a detection and tracking interference block (implemented in a DSP). The powerful anti-jamming filter named "PIRANHA TM Filter" was validated on a Generic GPS Receiver simulation (COSSAP Software). An easy plug-in hardware filter was then designed and interfaced with two standard civil GPS Receivers. The experimental test bench performances of the PIRANHA Filter (conducted at SupAero and the Navigation Department of ESTEC-ESA, The Netherlands) showed excellent improvement of both receivers using the Integrated PIRANHA Filter in the presence of real interference. Rejection of the order of 30 to 65dB (10bits CAN and coefficients on 14bits) were measured. The rejected bandwidths are adjusted between 5 to 100KHz. Moreover, the proposed PIRANHA Filter introduces only less than 1dB correlation loss degradation in absence of interference.

Several studies have been done or have been started in order to extend the current aeronautical Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS) DO-229D Minimum Operational Performance Specification (MOPS) SBAS standard mainly defined by the Radio Technical ComiteeCommittee for Aeronautical applications (RTCA), Sub-Committee 159, Working Group 2 (RTCA SC-159 WG-2). The SBAS message is transmitted by geostationary satellites using a modulation scheme similar to GPS wherein the same Gold code family, chipping rate, BPSK modulation of the same GPS carrier frequency of 1575.42 MHz with the difference being that the a 500 bps bit stream is also modulated instead of the 50 bps data stream as in GPS. The 500 bps data stream are symbol bits which encode the actual and already standardized through GPS-like C/A codes carrying navigation and integrity 250 bps SBAS message stream at 1575,42 MHz. The aeronautical SBAS is an ICAO standard and can be adopted by any state. The intent is to have aeronautical SBAS establish itself as a world-wide standard and service. Aeronautical SBAS main purpose was to provide near real-time GNSS integrity world-wide. That concept evolved to also providing differential corrections and optionally a ranging signal. In addition, every aeronautical SBAS service provider has the ability to certify and then designate his service for Safety-of-Life (SoL) service. Once certified as a SoL service, the respective aeronautical SBAS service provider would also transmit the appropriate messages and data indicating that the particular transmission (and data) can be used for SoL applications. Data within the aeronautical SBAS message stream indicates over which regions the differential messages can used. Today, aeronautical SBAS is capable of supporting LPV (Localaizer with Precision Vertical) approaches to 200 foot (about 66 meters) minimums. These are CAT-I ILS (Category 1 International Landing System) equivalent approaches. For further technical details, the reader is referred to the RTCA/DO-229D MOPS.

This paper describes a generalisation of the aeronautical GNSS Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS) air interface, in a true worldwide multimodal standard named Universal S-BAS. Examples of usages of this multifrequency future standard are presented in the area of science and precise positioning, timing, security, robust positioning, maritime and reflectometry applications.

Simulation of GNSS signals is very important to test and validate algorithms. With some algorithms, such as acquisition or tracking, we do not need to simulate a realistic constellation with actual ranges, Doppler or navigation data. We can simply simulate the signal after reception at a receiver’s front-end and only take into account and fix to desired values certain parameters, such as the intermediate and the sampling frequencies, the Doppler and Doppler rate, or the signal and the noise power. This last parameter requires some caution, because the noise power depends on the type of sampling (real or complex). In this article we show how to simulate noisy GNSS signals after a front-end. We will first present the model considered for the received signal and review the constraints on the intermediate and sampling frequencies for real and complex sampling. Then, we will introduce the noise, review the properties of a white noise, and discuss the sampling of a band-limited white noise to determine the expression of the noise power.

Les systèmes de navigation par satellites GNSS ne cessent d’évoluer et ils sont déjà utilisés dans de nombreuses applications. Avec la venue des nouveaux systèmes Galileo et BeiDou ainsi que la modernisation des systèmes GPS et GLONASS, de nouveaux satellites ainsi que de nombreuses nouvelles fréquences et de nouveaux signaux feront leur apparition dans les prochaines années et qui vont encore ouvrir la porte à d’innombrables nouvelles applications. L’évolution rapide de la téléphonie mobile nécessite une meilleure exploitation des systèmes de navigation et de positionnement dans les environnements urbains. Jusqu'à maintenant, les signaux de navigation GPS ne peuvent pas être bien captés dans les environnements urbains. Les niveaux des signaux y sont très faibles et il est presque impossible d’acquérir et de poursuivre les signaux de façon autonome à cause de l'importance des obstacles. De plus, le positionnement à l’intérieur et dans les environnements urbains sont aussi soumis aux problèmes de multi-trajets, de masquage, d’interférences et de brouillages. Dans ces conditions, il faut pouvoir traiter des signaux très dégradés ou très courts qui ne permettent pas au récepteur d’effectuer le processus de poursuite. Ainsi, cela nous conduit à la nécessité de repenser l'architecture du récepteur GNSS pour les applications modernes. Ce projet de thèse consiste à développer de nouvelles méthodes et architectures de récepteur GNSS de haute sensibilité et robuste aux dégradations des signaux tout en concevant de nouveaux algorithmes intégrés dans un récepteur GNSS hybride capable de fonctionner dans les environnements urbains profonds ou « intérieurs ». La méthodologie prévoit l’utilisation de la nouvelle approche de « détection collective (CD) » ou « acquisition collaborative ». L'approche collaborative qui traite tous les signaux multi-satellites ouvre une solution intéressante. De nombreuses techniques existent dans la littérature pour résoudre les problèmes de positionnement dans les environnements urbains, mais nous proposons la nouvelle approche de détection collective en raison de sa performance en tant que méthode de positionnement direct et méthode d'acquisition de haute sensibilité, par l'application de la détection vectorielle de tous les satellites visibles. En effet, la bonne combinaison des valeurs de corrélation de plusieurs satellites peut réduire le niveau de C/N0 requis des signaux satellites par les algorithmes standards de traitement (acquisition et poursuite) qui ne peuvent pas être acquis individuellement mais permettent de contribuer de manière constructive à une solution collective de positionnement pour chaque utilisateur. L’objectif est de détecter collaborativement les satellites. La combinaison de différents signaux GNSS peut considérablement augmenter la sensibilité d'acquisition du récepteur. Malgré les avantages de cette approche, elle présente également des inconvénients tels que la charge de calcul élevée en raison du grand nombre de points candidats dans le domaine position/biais d’horloge. Ainsi, le travail proposé dans cette thèse consiste à réduire la complexité du CD en optimisant la recherche de points candidats dans le domaine position/biais d’horloge. Enfin, l'objectif est d'appliquer l'approche de détection collective au positionnement GNSS coopératif pour la navigation moderne dans des environnements difficiles. Pour cela, des algorithmes d'exploitation optimale des ressources du récepteur en sélectionnant les meilleurs satellites ou la station de référence seront développés selon certains critères tels que le niveau du rapport signal sur bruit (C/N_0), l’angle d’élévation des satellites ainsi que la configuration géométrique des satellites visibles. L’objectif final est de proposer une nouvelle architecture de récepteur cognitif de haute sensibilité permettant de recevoir de façon optimale les nouveaux signaux GNSS. GNSS satellite navigation systems are constantly evolving and have been already used in many applications. With the advent of the new systems Galileo and BeiDou as well as the modernization of GPS and GLONASS systems, new satellites and numerous new frequencies and signals will appear in the coming years and will open door to countless new applications that are currently impossible. The rapid evolution of mobile telephony and personal navigation devices (PND) requires better use of navigation systems in non-ideal environments, especially the need for positioning in deep urban area. On the one hand, users are waiting for a high positioning accuracy, because of the proximity to various points of interest. On the other hand, urban environment brings specific difficulties in receiving GNSS signals. GNSS navigation signals cannot be properly captured in urban and "indoor" environments. Signal levels are very low and it is almost impossible to acquire and track signals autonomously because of the strong attenuation of signals due to obstacles. In addition, indoor and urban positioning are also subject to multipath problems, masking, interference and jamming. Under these conditions, we must be able to process highly degraded or very short signals that do not allow the receiver to go through the tracking process. Thus, this leads us to the need to rethink the architecture of GNSS receiver for modern applications. This thesis project consists of developing new GNSS methods and architectures of high sensitivity and robustness to signal degradations and designing new algorithms integrated into a hybrid GNSS receiver capable of operating in deep urban environments. The methodology involves the use of the new concept of “Collective Detection (CD)”, also called “collaborative acquisition”. The collaborative approach that treats multi-satellite signals all together opens an interesting solution. Many techniques exist in the literature to solve the problems of positioning in urban environments, but we propose the new Collective Detection approach because of its performance as both a Direct Positioning method, providing a coarse position/clock-bias solution directly from acquisition, and High-Sensitivity acquisition method, by application of vector detection of all satellites in view. Indeed, the correct combination of the correlation values of several satellites can reduce the required Carrier-to-Noise Ratio (C/N_0) level of the satellite signals which cannot be acquired individually by standard signal processing (acquisition and tracking) but make it possible to use them constructively to a positioning solution. The combination of different GNSS signals can considerably increase the acquisition sensitivity of the receiver. Despite the advantages of this approach, it also has drawbacks such as the high computational burden because of the large number of candidate points in the position/clock-bias domain. Thus, the work proposed in this thesis consists of reducing the complexity of the CD by optimizing the search for candidate points in position/clock-bias domain. Finally, the goal is to apply the CD approach to Cooperative GNSS Positioning for modern navigation in harsh environments. For that, algorithms for optimally exploiting receiver resources by selecting the best satellites or the reference station will be developed according to certain criteria such as the C/N_0 level, the elevation angle, and the geometric configuration of the visible satellites. The ultimate goal is to propose a design of a new smart receiver “High Sensitivity Cognitive GNSS Receiver (HS-CGR)” to optimally receive and process GNSS signals. STAR
