European tradition on vegetation classification provides an extraordinary legacy for understanding biodiversity. However, this classification lacks explicit data on vegetation attributes, especially if we extend national or regional concepts to a continental perspective. An additional effort for evaluating and characterizing European vegetation types is therefore needed, and the data contained in vegeta tion databases are probably the main tool for these purposes. The BraunBlanquet project is an initiative of the European Vegetation Survey for characterizing veg etation alliances across Europe. By analyzing more than 500,000 vegetation plots from 22 European countries, we developed a framework consisting of: (1) evaluat ing the consistency and robustness of alliances using the information provided by vegetation plot databases, (2) calibrating assignment rules for classifying, at least partially, the plots not assigned to alliances and (3) characterizing vegeta tion types by providing lists of diagnostic species and major distributional pat terns. The BraunBlanquet project represents the first attempt for extrapolating European vegetation information into a comprehensive definition of vegetation types. Furthermore, the outputs of the project are expected to improve biodiversity assessment and the conservation management of natural habitats. As a study case, we illustrate how our framework can be used to characterize different forest types across Europe.

European Vegetation Archive (EVA) was announced as a new initiative of the European Vegetation Survey at the EVS Meeting in Vienna in 2012. The aim of EVA is to create a centralized database of European vegetation plots by storing copies of national and regional databases on a single software platform using a unified taxonomic reference database. EVA does not affect the ongoing independent developments of source data bases and it guarantees that data property rights of the original contributors are re spected. EVA Data Property and Governance Rules were approved and the EVA website (www.euroveg.org/evadatabase) was established in 2012. Since then several European vegetationplot databases joined EVA. In the framework of the parallel BraunBlanquet project, we obtained experience with handling multiple databases based on different taxonomies, and a prototype of Turboveg 3 was developed as a software tool for joint management of multiple databases. This prototype has recently been accepted as the platform for technical management of EVA according to the approved Rules. A spe cific challenge for EVA is joining multiple species lists with different taxonomies used in national and regional databases. To solve this issue, EVA took over the SynBioSys Taxon Database, developed earlier for the SynBioSys Europe project, which is a system of taxon names and concepts used in the individual databases and their matches to a unified list of European flora. This taxon database is currently being extended to ac count for new vegetationplot databases and revised by taxonomic experts working in a newly established EVA Taxonomic Advisory Board. These technical developments made it possible that after two years since its formal establishment, first data sets could be uploaded to EVA, forming a basis for largescale analyses of European vegeta tion diversity for both scientific purposes and applications.

This editorial introduces the Special Volume “Vegetation databases for the 21st century”, which is an outcome of the 9th Meeting on Vegetation Databases, held 24–26 February 2010 in Hamburg. We briefly report on the meeting with its presentations and workshops. Then we highlight the launch of the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD), an online metadatabase initiated during the conference and which currently lists 183 databases worldwide. Further, we report on plans for an electronic reference list of all European plant taxa (EuroSL) and the emerging European Vegetation Archive (EVA), which will join existing national and regional databases. Besides five regular articles, this Special Volume contains a series of Database Reports that present standardised Fact Sheets for the majority of GIVD-registered databases. The publication of the Database Reports will make these databases more visible, allowing their regular citation, and thus presenting an incentive for collaborative data use.

VegItaly is at present the largest Italian vegetation database. It is the result of a collaborative project aspiring to represent a major reference for the Italian vegetation scientists. The paper emphasizes its benefits for phytosociological data management and describes the solutions adopted to solve several technical problems, like the treatment of different vegetation stratification systems, the conversion of vegetation cover values, taxonomic and syntaxonomic issues, data import and access. The structure of the taxonomic list produced to support the storing of data is described. It allows an easy management of synonymic relationships and is constantly updated according to new publications and revisions. Issues related to data import from different formats have been solved by developing assistant software VegImport and TabImport, which are based on the most used formats in vegetation plot archiving. Bibliographic sources are managed according to the LISY standard and include descriptive geographic information, bibliographic and syntaxonomic reference. Distinct data access regimes can be selected by VegItaly's users: visible, partly visible, invisible. Compared with the original project outline, many fundamental parts of the database structure have been fully built up, although several utilities still have to be developed or improved. © Italian Society for Vegetation Science.

Based on the experimental design proposed in similar studies, macromorphological and ecological traits of common reed beds were analysed at Lake Chiusi (Central Italy), together with selected chemical parameters in sediments and interstitial waters and aerial images of the site, in order to investigate reed decline and search for possible correlations among data. Typical symptoms of the reed dieback syndrome were detected, thus enlarging the occurrence of this phenomenon in southern Europe. Permanently dry, permanently flooded and partially flooded stands show different levels of decline, with the permanent flooding always co-occurring with reed dieback. Only few of the considered chemical parameters seem to play a role in reed decline (nitrates, rubidium, nickel, barium, manganese), although no clear pattern was identified. Data suggest that the co-occurrence of some chemicals with stressing conditions might affect the growth even of an efficient metal accumulator, as reed is generally considered. International audience; All maps of vegetation or habitats are based on a system of classification. For vegetation, this has usually been based on phytosociological synsystems, while classifications of habitats, being more recent, have been produced at national, regional and international levels (e.g. Czech biotopes, Nordic vegetation types and Corine biotopes). This chapter discusses the classification systems in use for mapping vegetation and habitats in different countries, and also the work towards harmonisation at European scale. It introduces the EUNIS habitat classification, proposed as a European standard under the EU INSPIRE Directive (Directive 2007/2/EC), and its crosswalks to and from other typologies. Finally, it presents the habitat typologies used for monitoring, statistical and distribution modelling approaches as developed by the BioHab and EBONE projects.

grasslands ,Europe - Abstract
After two preparatory years, the European Vegetation Archive (EVA ; http://euroveg. org/eva-database) actually started to become functional in 2014 (see talk by Chytrý et al.). This community-owned continental vegetation-plot database is the largest database of that type in the world and aims to be comprehensive with regard to countries and vegetation types. It is coordinated by the European Vegetation Survey (EVS ; http://euroveg.org/) with responsibilities for the grassland vegetation by the BiodivERsA project SIGNAL (http://www.bayceer.uni-bayreuth.de/signal/) and the European Dry Grassland Group (EDGG ; http://www.edgg.org). In this talk, I will present an overview of the plot data of grassland syntaxa available in EVA at the point of time of the conference, with an outlook on additional data that are currently being processed, and highlight data gaps for certain grassland types or regions. We understand grasslands in a wide sense, including the following major groups: (1) Temperate grasslands (Koelerio-Corynephoretea, Festuco-Brometea, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Nardetea strictae) ; (2) Mediterranean grasslands (Poetea bulbosae, Lygeo-Stipetea, Stipo-Agrostietea, Stipo-Trachynietea, Helianthemetea guttati, Tolpido-Holcetea, Helichryso-Crucianelletea, Astragalo-Brometea) ; (3) Arctic-alpine grasslands (Carici-Kobresietea, Elyno-Seslerietea, Juncetea trifidi) ; (4) Oro-Mediterranean grasslands (Festucetea indigestae, Festuco-Ononidetea, Carici-Genistetea, Rumici-Astragaletea, Daphno-Festucetea, Diantho-Teucrietea) ; (5) Saline grasslands (Festuco-Puccinellietea, Juncetea maritimae, Saginetea maritimae) ; (6) Related heathlands (Calluno-Ulicetea, Loiseleurio-Vaccinietea) ; and (7) Related tall-forb and forest-edge communities (Trifolio-Geranietea, Mulgedio-Aconitetea). Further, I will introduce the great and novel potential that our Continental grassland plot database holds both for fundamental and applied research. The topics that can be addressed in an unprecedented manner include (i) fine-grain species-richness patterns and their underlying drivers across large spatial extents ; (ii) functional diversity and species assembly rules ; (iii) extrapolation of results from coordinated global change experiments to a continental scale ; (iv) consistent re-classification of major grassland types across Europe ; (v) standardized parameterization of vegetation types ; (vi) contributions to conservation assessments such as EU red listing of habitat types. With some first analyses of diversity patterns in grasslands across Europe I will illustrate this potential.

In this study the effects of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) on pain relief and functional capacity of dogs with osteoarthritis (OA) were investigated, and compared with firocoxib. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: twenty-five client-owned dogs were treated with PEMF once a day for 20 sessions, and fifteen dogs (control group) were treated with 5 mg/kg of firocoxib once daily for 20 days. Blinded clinical examination and owner’s assessment were recorded before and after the therapy, as well as 4 and 12 months later. Data collections were statistically compared before and after treatments and between groups. Both groups showed decreased clinical signs of OA during the treatment. Compared with baseline, these improvements were statistically significant (P

- Abstract
In previous laser cleaning tests and analyses carried out on fossil bones, we demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the laser approach. Based on these results, we designed cleaning procedure employing fibre-optic-delivered Nd:YAG laser radiation, integrated with other conventional cleaning techniques, such as micro-sandblasting and chemical cleaning. The procedure has been optimised for application on important specimens, such as the fossil human "skull of Buia", recently discovered by a research expedition of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Florence and presently preserved in the Museum of Asmara (Eritre). Here, we report laser cleaning tests where this procedure has been applied on samples of other mammalian bones from Danakil depression and the site of matassino (Italy)

In recent years, research in botany was increasingly related with the use of large data-sets and data banks, in order to address emerging issues such as the severe risk of species, habitats and biodiversity loss. In this frame, theanArchivetaxonomic Checklist, an online synonymized list of botanical species names, developed to support the botanical data banking and vegetation analysis, is presented and discussed here. The benefits deriving from such a supervised and referenced tool are emphasized. They include the possibility to keep track of old and new species names, pointing out the latest reviewed accepted scientific name and its synonyms, and harmonizing different taxonomic points of view. Furthermore, the list is open access and expert qualified customers can collaborate to its improvement. The basic unit of the taxonomic Checklist is an object including thetaxonname at specific or, when present, infraspecific level; the taxonomic frame stops at the level of family and ranks higher than genus are not treated hierarchically. Some technical features, the main taxonomic references and the current state of the art are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The purpose of this paper is to report the results achieved with the biophysical stimulation in the conservative treatment of Legg-Calvé-Perthes (LCP) disease in dogs. Three female Portuguese Podengo puppies, from the same parents were presented for investigation of right hindlimb lameness in different times. The clinical and radiographic exams of the hip revealed the LCP disease in different stages in all puppies. External coaptation was applied in one of them, while biophysical stimulation was applied in another one, both of them in early stage of disease. Surgical treatment was performed only in the advanced stage one. The present report signals the improvements of clinical findings and of radiographic signs of LCP disease treated with pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF). It induces to consider this treatment in more dogs with LCP in early stage, investigating on PEMF effectiveness. Furthermore, it leads to suppose the LCP disease as a hereditary condition, not previously studied in this breed

Two years after its official start, the national vegetation database VegItaly, a collaborative project supported by the Italian scientific community and developed by a large group of scientists, is presented. This article offers a concise overview of the content of the database, currently consisting of 31,100 vegetation plot, including published and unpublished data. Some basic statistics are analysed; for example, data distribution in space and time, represented vegetation types expressed as physiognomic categories. Although rather young and still in progress, VegItaly already contains data from all the Italian regions and stands as an optimal candidate for the development of an Italian national vegetation database. Its main goals, theoretical basis, technical features, functionalities and recent progresses are outlined, showing glimpses of future prospects.

Background Memory priming seems possible even during apparently adequate anaesthesia. However, the effects of different anaesthetics and type of stimuli, by virtue of their specific neural underpinnings, have not been considered. Objective To determine if intra-operative implicit memory is affected by the type of anaesthesia (propofol or sevoflurane) or by the type of stimuli (abstract or concrete words). Design Two consecutive, randomised controlled experiments. Setting Neurological institute in Milan, Italy. Patients Forty-three patients undergoing anaesthesia with propofol (experiment 1) and 32 patients undergoing anaesthesia with sevoflurane (experiment 2). Patients were ASA I or II, age 18 to 65 years, native Italian speakers, right-handed and without any condition affecting memory or hearing. Intervention During anaesthesia, the patients heard a list of either concrete or abstract words or no words at all (controls). Explicit memory was tested with an explicit recall task and the Brice Interview; implicit memory was assessed through a word stem completion test. Outcome measures The number of explicitly recalled words, positivity to the Brice Interview, the proportion of target and nontarget hits, and a derived implicit memory score. Results With propofol, the proportion of target hits was significantly greater than the proportion of nontarget hits for the concrete word experimental group (P = 0.018). The implicit memory score of the concrete word experimental group was significantly higher than the score of both the abstract word experimental group (P = 0.000) and the concrete word control group (P = 0.023). With sevoflurane, the proportion of target hits was significantly higher than the proportion of nontarget hits for the abstract word experimental group only (P = 0.027). No patients had a BIS above 60 and no one could recall intra-operative events or words. Conclusion Intra-operative memory for words can form during apparently adequate BIS-guided anaesthesia but is modified by propofol or sevoflurane acting on different brain targets. Further studies on larger samples and using neuroimaging techniques are needed. Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT03727464.

It has been in development since 2012 and first made available for use in research projects in 2014. It stores copies of national and regional vegetation-plot databases on a single software platform. Data storage in EVA does not affect on-going independent development of the contributing databases, which remain the property of the data contributors. EVA uses a prototype of the database management software TURBOVEG 3 developed for joint management of multiple databases that use different species lists. This is facilitated by the SynBioSys Taxon Database, a system of taxon names and concepts used in the individual European databases and their corresponding names on a unified list of European flora. TURBOVEG 3 also includes procedures for handling data requests, selections and provisions according to the approved EVA Data Property and Governance Rules. By 30 June 2015, 61 databases from all European regions have joined EVA, contributing in total 1 027 376 vegetation plots, 82% of them with geographic coordinates, from 57 countries. EVA provides a unique data source for large-scale analyses of European vegetation diversity both for fundamental research and nature conservation applications. Updated information on EVA is available online at http://euroveg.org/eva-database. Czech Science Foundation (Centre of Excellence PLADIAS) [14-36079G] Our major thanks go to thousands of European vegetation scientists of several generations who collected the original vegetation-plot data in the field, published them or made their unpublished data available to others, and to those who spent myriad hours digitizing data and managing the contributing databases. EVA data management has been partly funded by the Czech Science Foundation (Centre of Excellence PLADIAS, 14-36079G).
