People with multiple sclerosis (MS) are likely to benefit from regular exercise, but physical inactivity is more common among people with MS than among the general population. This small randomized study evaluated whether motivational interviewing (MI) affects adherence to and personal experience in an exercise program. Inactive people with MS participating in an eight-week exercise program were randomized to either three brief MI (n = 7) or three health coaching (n = 6) sessions. Session attendance for both conditions was high, and MI fidelity was rigorously and reliably measured using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Scales. The feasibility of using this approach was demonstrated with a small sample. Large effects favoring the MI condition were found for physical exertion, affect during exercise, and fatigue, but no effects were found for adherence to the exercise program. Treatment integrity measures of MI were correlated with outcomes in expected directions. Although this study demonstrated the feasibility of this MI approach, the large effect sizes found should be viewed with substantial skepticism and replicated in sufficiently powered studies using objective measures of exercise adherence.

An editorial is presented on qualitative methods not using p-values. Topics include appropriate use and interpretation of statistical inference showing a debate within the natural sciences with instructive applications to the very questions the social sciences address; and use of publications as a measure of relevance and impact by 21st century academic institutions.

Latino immigrant families in the child welfare system are more likely than their U.S. born peers to experience barriers to the supportive services their families need. These clients must engage with their social workers to overcome obstacles including communicative challenges, cultural differences, limited Spanish language referral services, ineligibility for public programs, and fear of government authorities. This study used interviews with Spanish speaking clients and social workers in one child welfare agency to examine clients' and workers' perceptions of their relationships and the barriers and facilitators of their work together. Our findings suggest that child welfare agencies might better support Spanish speaking clients and workers by adopting strategies to strengthen workers' cultural competency, to reduce barriers to referral services, and to provide appropriate supervision to Spanish speaking workers. These institutional supports are needed to support client-worker engagement and enhance service delivery for Latino immigrant families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human service agencies in new immigrant destinations often lack the experience and bilingual staff required to provide inguistically and culturally appropriate services to Latino immigrant families. This qualitative study examined the ways one new destination public health agency responded to this demographic shift. The agency leveraged a culture of collaboration and a team approach so that serving immigrants became the responsibility of all workers, not only a few bilingual staff. Implications for practice including the potential benefits and pitfalls of including monolingual workers in immigrant clients' care are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the influence of family financial assets and debt, both measured during the time of youth's college enrollment, on the chances of college graduation. Data come from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Results from analyses controlling for a number of student, parental, and institutional characteristics indicate that family assets are positively related to the chances of college graduation among White and Black students; family debt is negatively associated with the odds of college graduation among Black students, but neither family assets nor family debt is related to the chances of college graduation among Hispanic students. Overall, results indicate that family assets and debt explain a small portion of racial/ethnic gaps in college graduation. Policy implications are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Existing research on bullying and peer victimization among school-age youth focuses on identifying risk and protective factors, developing interventions, and assessing outcomes to address this pervasive problem. This article reviews research on bullying and victimization of Latino and Asian youth. The review suggests that risk and protective factors associated with bullying among Latino and Asian youth might differ considerably from their mainstream peer groups that are often the focus of bullying research. This article examines the macrosystem- (immigration, poverty), exosystem-, and microsystem-level factors (family environment, peers, and school environment), along with ontogenetic factors that are related to bullying involvement among Latino and Asian youth in the United States. It also highlights the need for further investigation into the bullying experiences of Latino and Asian youth, and advocates for the development of culturally relevant interventions.
