22. Influence of annealing in H atmosphere on the electrical properties of Al2O3 layers grown on p-type Si by the atomic layer deposition technique

Abstract

In the present study the electrical properties of 100 nm and 400 nm alumina films grown by the atomic layer deposition technique on p-type Si before and after a post-deposition annealing at 440 °C and after a dc H plasma treatment at different temperatures are investigated. We show that the density of interface states is below 2 × 1010 cm−2 in these samples and this value is significantly lower compared to that reported previously in thinner alumina layers (below 50 nm). The effective minority carrier lifetime tg,eff and the effective surface recombination velocity seff in untreated p-type Si samples with 100 nm and 400 nm aluminum oxide is comparable with those obtained after thermal oxidation of 90 nm SiO2. Both, a post-deposition annealing in forming gas (nitrogen/hydrogen) at elevated temperatures and a dc H-plasma treatment at temperatures close to room temperature lead to the introduction of negatively charged defects in alumina films. The results obtained in samples annealed in different atmospheres at different temperatures or subjected to a dc H plasma treatment allow us to correlate these centers with H-related defects. By comparing with theory we tentatively assign them to negatively charged interstitial H atoms.

Abstract

Recent work has shown that human colostrum and milk, which had been traditionally considered sterile, provides a continuous supply of commensal and potential probiotic bacteria to the infant gut. More than 200 different bacterial species, including staphylococci, lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, have been isolated from human milk samples so far, although the cultivable bacterial diversity found in individual samples is much lower (2 to 8 different species per women). Interestingly, the same bacterial strains have been found in both breast milk and infant feces of different mother-infant pairs, confirming the role of human milk on the bacterial colonization of the infant gut. These commensal bacteria could protect the infant gut and direct, at least partly, the maturation of the immune system, among other functions. Different studies suggest that some bacteria present in the maternal gut could reach the mammary gland during late pregnancy and lactation through a mechanism involving gut dendritic cells and macrophages. Thus, modulation of maternal gut microbiota during pregnancy and lactation could have a direct effect on infant health. © 2015.

Abstract

The lateral and vertical integration density of bulk microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) using bonded silicon-on-insulator (BSOI) wafers is significantly enhanced if the handle wafer is used as an electrical redistribution layer. Therefore isolated conductive paths should be integrated in the handle wafer, which are connected to the surface of the BSOI-wafer by high aspect ratio contacts (VIAs) through the device layer of the BSOI-wafer. In the present study we report on a fabrication process for customer specific designed BSOI wafers with VIAs from the device to the handle layers. Wafer bonding, wafer edge shaping and thinning of the wafers, which are critical processes for the fabrication of the BSOI-wafers, are discussed. The contacts to the handle wafer through the 75 µm thick device layer are created by 10 µm wide and 75 µm deep trenches filled with highly doped n-type poly-silicon. From current-voltage measurements an ohmic behaviour of the contacts with a resistance of around 120 Ω is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. Antimicrobial activity of reuterin produced by Lactobacillus reuteri on Listeria monocytogenes in cold-smoked salmon

Abstract

Lactobacillus reuteri INIA P579 was used for the production and purification of reuterin. The purity of reuterin was assessed by high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. After purification, reuterin concentration obtained was 1.3 M. The inhibitory activity using Escherichia coli K12 as indicator strain was estimated to be 510 AU/ml. Survival curves in tryptic soy broth revealed that reuterin required to inhibit the growth of three Listeria monocytogenes strains was in the range of 2e4 AU/ml. Purified reuterin (10 AU/g) significantly reduced the growth of L. monocytogenes in cold-smoked salmon kept under moderate or strong temperature abuse conditions. After 15 d at 8 C, cold-smoked salmon with added reuterin exhibited L. monocytogenes counts 2.0 log CFU/g lower than control smoked salmon with no reuterin added. At 30 C, reuterin also controlled the growth of the pathogen, with counts 1.4 and 0.9 log CFU/g lower than those observed in control smoked salmon after 24 and 48 h, respectively. Abstract

Porous layers and membranes representing 2D and 3D dielectric structures were fabricated on different III-V compounds (GaAs, InP, GaP) by electrochemical etching techniques. Nonlithographically fabricated ordered nanopore arrays in InP are reported for the first time. We show that the reflectance from nanostructured InP is lower than that from bulk InP in the spectral interval 1.5 - 2.2 eV. The artificial anisotropy induced by nanotexturization was studied in porous GaP membranes and the refractive indices for ordinary and extraordinary beams were evaluated., Pub in: Materials Research Society Symposium Proceedings, Volume 692.
