Abstract

In addition to formal learning at universities, like in lecture halls and seminar rooms, students are regularly confronted with self-study activities. Instead of being left to their own devices, students might benefit from a proper design of such activities, including pedagogical interventions. Such designs can increase the degree of activity and the contribution of self-study activities to the achievement of learning outcomes. Especially in times of a global pandemic, self-study activities are increasingly executed at home, where students already use technology-enhanced materials, processes, and digital platforms. Thus we pick up these building blocks and introduce TecCoBot within this paper. TecCoBot is not only a chatbot, supporting students in reading texts by offering writing assignments and providing automated feedback on these, but also implements a design for self-study activities, typically only offered to a few students as face-to-face mentoring., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, presented at the Workshop Intelligence Support for Mentoring Processes in Higher Education (IMHE) at ITS 2020, to be published in CEUR-WS Proceedings

34. Decentralized Learning Infrastructures for Community Knowledge Building

Abstract

Learning in communities of practice (CoPs) makes up a significant portion of today's knowledge gain. However, only little technological support is tailored specifically toward CoPs and their particular strengths and challenges. Even worse, CoPs often do not possess the resources to host or develop a software ecosystem to support their activities. In this contribution, we describe a decentralized learning infrastructure for community knowledge building. It takes into account the constant change of these communities by providing a lightweight and scalable infrastructure, without the need for central coordination or facilitation. As a real use case, we implement a question-based dialog application for inquiry-based learning and ignorance modeling with our infrastructure. Additionally, we explore the possibility of using social bots to connect the services provided by the decentralized infrastructure to communication tools already present in most communities (e.g., chat platforms). Following a design science approach, we describe a multistep evaluation of both the infrastructure and application, together with the improvements made to the resulting artifacts of each step. Our results indicate the relevance of our approach, which may serve as an example of how decentralized learning infrastructures for learning outside of formal settings can be applied by CoPs for knowledge building.

Abstract

We consider the spin-orbit-induced spin Hall effect and spin swapping in diffusive superconductors. By employing the non-equilibrium Keldysh Green's function technique in the quasiclassical approximation, we derive coupled transport equations for the spectral spin and particle distributions and for the energy density in the elastic scattering regime. We compute four contributions to the spin Hall conductivity, namely, skew scattering, side-jump, anomalous velocity, and the Yafet contribution. The reduced density of states in the superconductor causes a renormalization of the spin Hall angle. We demonstrate that all four of these contributions to the spin Hall conductivity are renormalized in the same way in the superconducting state. In its simplest manifestation, spin swapping transforms a primary spin current into a secondary spin current with swapped current and polarization directions. We find that the spin-swapping coefficient is not explicitly but only implicitly affected by superconducting correlations through the renormalized diffusion coefficients. We discuss experimental consequences for measurements of the (inverse) spin Hall effect and spin swapping in four-terminal geometries. In our geometry, below the superconducting transition temperature, the spin-swapping signal is increased an order of magnitude while changes in the (inverse) spin Hall signal are moderate., Comment: 20 pages
