Abstract

The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction $^{40}$Ca+$^{12}$C at 25 MeV per nucleon bombarding energy was used to produce $\alpha$-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of $\alpha$-particle clustering from excited $^{16}O$, $^{20}Ne$ and $^{24}Mg$ is reported., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Physics Letters B

Abstract

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at mid-rapidity in semi-peripheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of $<$N/Z$>$ isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio $<$N/Z$>$ distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin "migration", that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasi-spectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a Stochastic Mean Field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. Abstract

Odd-even staggering effects on charge distributions are investigated for fragments produced in semiperipheral and central collisions of 112Sn+58Ni at 35 MeV/nucleon. For fragments with Z<16 one observes a clear overproduction of even charges, which decreases for heavier fragments. In peripheral collisions staggering effects persist up to Z about 40. For light fragments, staggering appears to be substantially independent of the centrality of the collisions, suggesting that it is mainly related to the last few steps in the decay of hot nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Accepting the emission simultaneity and equality among the $\alpha$-particle kinetic energies as experimental criteria for deciding in favor of the condensate nature of an excited state, we analyze the $0_2^+$ and $2_2^+$ states of $^{12}$C and the $0_6^+$ state of $^{16}$O. Abstract

The excitation functions for different fragments produced in the 27Al + 27Al dissipative collisions have been measured in steps of 250 keV in the energy range 122 - 132 MeV. Deep inelastic processes have been selected by integrating events over a total kinetic energy loss window of 12 MeV between 20 and 32 MeV. Large fluctuations have been observed in all the studied excitation functions. Non-satistical origin of these fluctuations is confirmed by large channel cross correlations coefficients. Energy autocorrelation function of cross section excitation function presents damped oscillation structure as predicted for the case when a di-nuclear system with a lifetime similar with its revolution period is formed. The periodicity of the energy autocorrelation function is used to obtain information on the deformation of the 27Al + 27 Al di-nucleus., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons, and alpha-particles, have been measured at very forward angles (0.7 deg < theta_lab < 7 deg), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions. Peaks, originating from resonance decays, are larger at E/A = 44 than at 77 MeV. This reflects the larger relative importance of independently emitted light particles, as compared to two-particle decay from unstable fragments, at the higher beam energy. The time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF, has been deduced from particle-velocity-gated correlation functions (discarding the contribution from resonance decays). Abstract

The fully energy-damped yields from the $^{35}$Cl+$^{12}$C reaction have been systematically investigated using particle-particle coincidence techniques at a $^{35}$Cl bombarding energy of $\sim$ 8 MeV/nucleon. The fragment-fragment correlation data show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with rather large numbers of secondary light-charged particles emitted from the two excited exit fragments. No evidence is observed for ternary break-up events. The binary-process results of the present measurement, along with those of earlier, inclusive experimental data obtained at several lower bombarding energies are compared with predictions of two different kinds of statistical model calculations. These calculations are performed using the transition-state formalism and the Extended Hauser-Feshbach method and are based on the available phase space at the saddle point and scission point of the compound nucleus, respectively. The methods give comparable predictions and are both in good agreement with the experimental results thus confirming the fusion-fission origin of the fully-damped yields. The similarity of the predictions for the two models supports the claim that the scission point configuration is very close to that of the saddle point for the light $^{47}$V mass-asymmetry-dependent fission barriers needed in the transition-state calculation., Comment: 20 pages, revtex, figures available upon request, to appear in Phys. Abstract

Background: In heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies the production of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is due to different reaction mechanisms and different time scales, ranging from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from the equilibrated system. Purpose: We compare the IMF statistical and dynamical emission probabilities in collisions of a neutron-rich Sn124+Ni64 system and a neutron-poor Sn112+Ni58 system at the laboratory energy of 35 A MeV. Method: The IMFs production mechanism in semiperipheral reactions has been investigated in our previous works. In this paper, the analysis is expanded for the same set of data and production cross sections have been evaluated for dynamical and statistical emission in a coherent way for light and heavy fragments. Results: The data analysis has evidenced a strong competition between dynamical and statistical emission mechanisms. Probability of the dynamical emission of IMFs is strongly influenced by the (N/Z) ratio of the colliding system. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the statistical emission is equally probable for the two systems, while the dynamical emission is enhanced for the neutron-rich system, especially for heavy fragments (Z≥6). The observed effect points at a high sensitivity of the prompt-dynamical emission to the (N/Z) ratio of a given system. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Background: In heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies the production of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is due to different reaction mechanisms and different time scales, ranging from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from the equilibrated system. Purpose: We compare the IMF statistical and dynamical emission probabilities in collisions of a neutron-rich ^{124}Sn + ^{64}Ni system and a neutron-poor ^{112}Sn + ^{58}Ni system at the laboratory energy of 35 A MeV. Method: The IMFs production mechanism in semiperipheral reactions has been investigated in our previous works. In this paper, the analysis is expanded for the same set of data and production cross sections have been evaluated for dynamical and statistical emission in a coherent way for light and heavy fragments. Results: The data analysis has evidenced a strong competition between dynamical and statistical emission mechanisms. Probability of the dynamical emission of IMFs is strongly influenced by the (N/Z) ratio of the colliding system. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the statistical emission is equally probable for the two systems, while the dynamical emission is enhanced for the neutron-rich system, especially for heavy fragments (Z≥6). The observed effect points at a high sensitivity of the prompt-dynamical emission to the (N/Z) ratio of a given system.

Abstract

Intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted with multiplicity MIMF ≥ 3 at mid-velocity in semi-central reactions induced by 124Sn projectile (35 A.MeV) on 64Ni target have been studied. The results show a clear correlation between the fragment sizes and the corresponding transverse velocities. We interpret this correlation as signature of hierarchy effects in nuclear multifragmentation. A correlation with the fragments isospin contents is also found. Qualitative comparisons with SMF calculations suggests that these correlations are good observables for the symmetry term of the EOS at sub-saturation density.

Abstract

International audience; For fragments emitted in the reactions 124Sn + 64Ni and 112Sn + 58Ni at 35 AMeV, isotopic composition and velocity correlations have been studied as a function of the centrality of the collision, using the 4\pi Chimera multidetector. We have investigated the time scale for fragments formation, in order to distinguish between prompt dynamical and sequential statistical emission. Promptly emitted light fragments (Z \leq 9) produced in the mid-rapidity domain are characterised by larger N/Z ratio and stronger angular anisotropies than those produced in sequential statistical emission. Results are compared with stochastic BNV code simulations obtained for primary fragments. Valuable information on the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at sub-saturation densities are obtained.
