As the number of gravitational-wave detections grows, the merger rate of binary black holes (BBHs) can help us to constrain their formation, the properties of their progenitors, and their birth environment. Here, we aim to address the impact of the metal-dependent star formation rate (SFR) on the BBH merger rate. To this end, we have developed a fully data-driven approach to model the metal-dependent SFR and coupled it to BBH evolution. We have adopted the most up-to-date scaling relations, based on recent observational results, and we have studied how the BBH merger rate density varies over a wide grid of galaxy and binary evolution parameters. Our results show that including a realistic metal-dependent SFR evolution yields a value of the merger rate density which is too high compared to the one inferred from GW data. Moreover, variations of the SFR in low-mass galaxies ($M_\ast \lesssim 10^8 \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) do not contribute more than a factor $\sim 2$ to the overall merger rate density at redshift $z=0$. These results suggest that the discrepancy between the BBH merger rate density inferred from data and theoretical models is not caused by approximations in the treatment of the metal-dependent SFR, but rather stems from stellar evolution models and/or BBH formation channels., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Context. Green valley (GV) galaxies are objects defined on a color-magnitude, or color-mass, diagram which are associated with a transition from a star-forming to a quiescent state (quenching), or vice versa (rejuvenation). Aims. We study the sub-mm emission of galaxies in the GV and link it with their physical evolutionary properties. Methods. We exploit a semi-analytic model (SAM) for galaxy evolution which includes a detailed treatment of dust production and evolution in galactic contexts. We model the observational properties of simulated galaxies by post-processing the SAM catalogs with the spectral synthesis and radiative transfer code GRASIL. Results. Our model produces a clear bimodality (and thus a GV) in the color-mass diagram, although some tensions arise when compared to observations. After having introduced a new criterion for identifying the GV in any dataset, we find that most blue and GV galaxies in our model are emitters at $250\,{\mu \rm m}$ (with fluxes $\geq 25\,{\rm mJy}$), in keeping with GAMA results. In the color-$S_{250\, \mu \rm m}$ diagram, GV galaxies exhibit intermediate colors yet maintain significant sub-mm fluxes. This occurs because, while specific star formation rates drop sharply during quenching, the dust content remains relatively high during the GV transition, powering sub-mm emission. Rejuvenating galaxies in the GV, which were previously red, have experienced a star formation burst that shifts their color to green, but their $S_{250\, \mu \rm m}$ fluxes remain low due to still low dust mass. Our galaxy evolution model highlights the delay between star formation and dust evolution, showing that sub-mm emission is not always a safe indicator of star formation activity, with quenching (rejuvenating) GV galaxies featuring relatively large (low) sub-mm emission., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. The stellar initial-mass function (IMF) represents a fundamental quantity in astrophysics and cosmology, describing the mass distribution of stars from low to very-high masses. It is intimately linked to a wide variety of topics, including stellar and binary evolution, galaxy evolution, chemical enrichment, and cosmological reionization. Nonetheless, the IMF still remains highly uncertain. In this work, we aim at determining the IMF with a novel approach based on the observed rates of transients of stellar origin. We parametrize the IMF with a simple, but flexible, Larson shape, and insert it into a parametric model for the cosmic UV luminosity density, local stellar mass density, type Ia supernova (SN Ia), core-collapse supernova (CCSN), and long gamma-ray burst (LGRB) rates as function of redshift. We constrain our free parameters by matching the model predictions to a set of empirical determinations for the corresponding quantities, via a Bayesian Markov-Chain Monte Carlo method. Remarkably, we are able to provide an independent IMF determination, with characteristic mass $m_c=0.10^{+0.24}_{-0.08}\:M_{\odot}$, and high-mass slope $\xi=-2.53^{+0.24}_{-0.27}$, that is in accordance with the widely-used IMF parameterizations (e.g. Salpeter, Kroupa, Chabrier). Moreover, the adoption of an up-to-date recipe for the cosmic metallicity evolution, allows us to constrain the maximum metallicity of LGRB progenitors to $Z_{max}=0.12^{+0.29}_{-0.05}\:Z_{\odot}$. We also find what progenitor fraction actually leads to SN Ia or LGRB emission, put constraints on the CCSN and LGRB progenitor mass ranges, and test the IMF universality. Pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) have crucial implications for many astrophysical topics, including the search for very massive stars, the black hole mass spectrum, and galaxy chemical enrichment. To this end, we need to understand where PISNe are across cosmic time, and what are their favourable galactic environments. We present a new determination of the PISN rate as a function of redshift, obtained by combining up-to-date stellar evolution tracks from the PARSEC and FRANEC codes, with an up-to-date semi-empirical determination of the star formation rate and metallicity evolution of star-forming galaxies throughout cosmic history. We find the PISN rate to exhibit a huge dependence on the model assumptions, including the criterion to identify stars unstable to pair production, and the upper limit of the stellar initial mass function. Remarkably, the interplay between the maximum metallicity at which stars explode as PISNe, and the dispersion of the galaxy metallicity distribution, dominates the uncertainties, causing a $\sim$ seven-orders-of-magnitude PISN rate range. Furthermore, we show a comparison with the core-collapse supernova rate, and study the properties of the favourable PISN host galaxies. According to our results, the main contribution to the PISN rate comes from metallicities between $\sim 10^{-3}$ and $10^{-2}$, against the common assumption that views very-low-metallicity, Population III stars as exclusive or dominant PISN progenitors. We devise and exploit a data-driven, semi-empirical framework of galaxy formation and evolution, coupling it to recipes for planet formation from stellar and planetary science, to compute the cosmic planet formation rate, and the properties of the planets' preferred host stellar and galactic environments. We also discuss how the rates and formation sites of planets are affected when considering their habitability, and when including possible threatening sources related to star formation and nuclear activity. Overall, we conservatively estimate a cumulative number of some $10^{20}$ Earth-like planets and around $10^{18}$ habitable Earths in our past lightcone. Finally, we find that a few $10^{17}$ are older than our own Earth, an occurrence which places a loose lower limit a few $10^{-18}$ to the odds for a habitable world to ever hosting a civilization in the observable Universe., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. The line intensity mapping technique involves measuring the cumulative emission from specific spectral lines emitted by galaxies and intergalactic gas. This method provides a way to study the matter distribution and the evolution of large-scale structures throughout the history of the Universe. However, modeling intensity mapping from ab-initio approaches can be challenging due to significant astrophysical uncertainties and noticeable degeneracies among astrophysical and cosmological parameters. To address these challenges, we develop a semi-empirical, data-driven framework for galaxy evolution, which features a minimal set of assumptions and parameters gauged on observations. By integrating this with stellar evolution and radiative transfer prescriptions for line emissions, we derive the cosmic [CII] intensity over an extended redshift range $0 \lesssim z \lesssim 10$. Our approach is quite general and can be easily applied to other key lines used in intensity mapping studies, such as [OIII] and the CO ladder. We then evaluate the detectability of the [CII] power spectra using current and forthcoming observational facilities. In a series of recent papers we put forward a ``fractional gravity'' framework striking an intermediate course between a modified gravity theory and an exotic dark matter (DM) scenario, which envisages the DM component in virialized halos to feel a non-local interaction mediated by gravity. The remarkable success of this model in reproducing several aspects of DM phenomenology motivates us to look for a general relativistic extension. Specifically, we propose a theory, dubbed Relativistic Scalar Fractional Gravity or RSFG, in which the trace of the DM stress-energy tensor couples to the scalar curvature via a non-local operator constructed with a fractional power of the d'Alembertian. We derive the field equations starting from an action principle, and then we investigate their weak field limit, demonstrating that in the Newtonian approximation the fractional gravity setup of our previous works is recovered. We compute the first-order post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ and its relation with weak lensing, showing that although in RSFG the former deviates from its GR values of unity, the latter is unaffected. We also perform a standard scalar-vector-tensor-decomposition of RSFG in the weak field limit, to highlight that gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light, though also an additional scalar mode becomes dynamical. Finally, we derive the modified conservation laws of the DM stress energy tensor in RSFG, showing that a new non-local force emerges, and hence that the DM fluid deviates from the geodesic solutions of the field equations., Comment: 21 pages. The chameleon screening mechanism has been constrained many a time using dynamic and kinematic galaxy cluster observables. Current constraints are, however, insensitive to different mass components within galaxy clusters and have been mainly focused on a single mass density profile, the Navarro-Frenk-While mass density model. In this work, we extend the study of the Chameleon screening mechanism in galaxy clusters by considering a series of mass density models, namely: generalized-Navarro-Frenk-While, b-Navarro-Frenk-While, Burket, Isothermal and Einasto. The coupling strength ($\beta$) and asymptotic value of the chameleon field ($\phi_\infty$) are constrained by using kinematics analyses of simulated galaxy clusters, generated both assuming General Relativity and a strong chameleon scenario. By implementing a Bayesian analysis we comprehensively show that the biases introduced due to an incorrect assumption of the mass model are minimal. Similarly, we also demonstrate that a spurious detection of evidence for modifications to gravity is highly unlikely when utilizing the kinematics of galaxy clusters., Comment: 25 pages, 7 Figures, submitted to JCAP

We investigate the star formation process within the central 3.3 kpc region of the nearby luminous infrared Seyfert NGC 7469, probing scales ranging from 88 to 330 pc. We combine JWST/MIRI imaging with the F770W filter, with CO(2-1) and the underlying 1.3 mm dust continuum data from ALMA, along with VLA radio continuum observations at 22 GHz. NGC 7469 hosts a starburst ring which dominates the overall star formation activity. We estimate a global star formation rate SFR $\sim 11.5$ $\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ from the radio at 22 GHz, and a cold molecular gas mass M(H2) $\sim$ 6.4 $\times$ $\rm 10^9 M_{\odot}$ from the CO(2-1) emission. We find that the 1.3 mm map shows a morphology remarkably similar to those traced by the 22 GHz and the 7.7 $\rm \mu m$ polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission observed with JWST. The three tracers reproduce the morphology of the starburst ring with good agreement. We further investigate the correlations between the PAHs, the star formation rate and the cold molecular gas. We find a stronger correlation of the PAHs with the star formation than with the CO, with steeper correlations within the starburst ring ($n > 2$) than in the outer region ($n < 1$). We derive the correlation between the star formation rate and the cold molecular gas mass surface densities, the Kennicutt-Schmidt star formation law. Comparisons with other galaxy populations, including starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei, highlighted that NGC 7469 exhibits an intermediate behavior to the Kennicutt-Schmidt relations found for these galaxy populations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

In a hierarchical, dark matter-dominated Universe, stellar mass functions (SMFs), galaxy merger rates, star formation histories (SFHs), satellite abundances, and intracluster light, should all be intimately connected observables. However, the systematics affecting observations still prevent universal and uniform measurements of, for example, the SMF and the SFHs, inevitably preventing theoretical models to compare with multiple data sets robustly and simultaneously. We here present our holistic semi-empirical model DECODE (Discrete statistical sEmi-empiriCal mODEl) that converts via abundance matching dark matter merger trees into galaxy assembly histories, using different SMFs in input and predicting all other observables in output in a fully data-driven and self-consistent fashion with minimal assumptions. We find that: 1) weakly evolving or nearly constant SMFs below the knee ($M_\star \lesssim 10^{11} \, M_\odot$) are the best suited to generate star formation histories aligned with those inferred from MaNGA, SDSS, GAMA, and, more recently, JWST; 2) the evolution of satellites after infall only affects the satellite abundances and star formation histories of massive central galaxies but not their merger histories; 3) the resulting SFR-$M_\star$ relation is lower in normalization by a factor of $\sim 2$ with respect to observations, with a flattening at high masses more pronounced in the presence of mergers; 4) the latest data on intracluster light can be reproduced if mass loss from mergers is included in the models. We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with z < 0.3 detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1Re and then an enhancement beyond 1Re , strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. FIR and submm observations have established the fundamental role of dust-obscured star formation in the assembly of stellar mass over the past 12 billion years. At z between 2 and 4, the bulk of star formation is enshrouded in dust, and dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) contain about half of the total stellar mass density. Star formation develops in dense molecular clouds, and is regulated by a complex interplay between all the ISM components that contribute to the energy budget of a galaxy: gas, dust, cosmic rays, interstellar electromagnetic fields, gravitational field, dark matter. Molecular gas is the actual link between star forming gas and its complex environment, providing by far the richest amount of information about the star formation process. However, molecular lines interpretation requires complex modeling of astrochemical networks, which regulate the molecular formation and establishes molecular abundances in a cloud, and a modeling of the physical conditions of the gas in which molecular energy levels become populated. This paper critically reviews the main astrochemical parameters needed to get predictions about molecular signals in DSFGs. In this paper, we investigate the benefits of teaming up data from the radio to the far- 1 infrared (FIR) regime for the characterization of Dusty Star-Forming Galaxies (DSFGs). These galaxies 2 are thought to be the star-forming progenitors of local massive quiescent galaxies, and play a pivotal 3 role in the reconstruction of the cosmic star formation rate density up to high redshift. Due to their 4 dust-enshrouded nature, DSFGs are often invisible in the near-infrared/Optical/UV bands. Therefore, 5 they necessitate observations at longer wavelengths, primarily the FIR, where dust emission occurs, 6 and radio, which is not affected by dust absorption. Combining data from these two spectral windows 7 makes it possible to characterize even the dustiest objects, enabling the retrieval of information about 8 their age, dust temperature, and star-formation status, and facilitates the differentiation between 9 various galaxy populations that evolve throughout cosmic history. Despite the detection of faint radio 10 sources being a challenging task, this study demonstrates that an effective strategy to build statistically 11 relevant samples of DSFGs would be reaching deep sensitivities in the radio band, even restricted to 12 smaller areas, and then combining these radio observations with FIR/submm data. Additionally, 13 the paper quantifies the improvement in the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) reconstruction of 14 DSFGs by incorporating ALMA band measurements, in particular, in its upgraded status thanks to 15 the anticipated Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade.

We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured ($20<\log(N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}<22$) and obscured ($22< \log(N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}<24$) active galactic nuclei (AGN) to shed light on the orientation vs evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the {\it Chandra} COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, $M_\star$, intrinsic X-ray luminosities, $L_{\rm X}$, obscuring column densities, $N_{\rm H}$, and specific accretion rates $\lambda\propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to $z\approx3$, i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass $M_\star$ at redshift $z$ hosting an AGN with column density $N_{\rm H}$ and specific accretion rate $\lambda$. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher $\lambda$ compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at $\log\lambda_{\rm break} \sim-2$ for $z <0.5$, but shifts to higher $\lambda$ values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the $\lambda-N_{\rm H}$ plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN "downsizing" and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts., Comment: Published at MNRAS

Environmental effects are believed to play an important yet poorly understood role in triggering accretion events onto the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of galaxies (Active Galactic Nuclei; AGN). Massive clusters, which represent the densest structures in the Universe, provide an excellent laboratory to isolate environmental effects and study their impact on black hole growth. In this work, we critically review observational evidence for the preferential activation of SMBHs in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. We develop a semi-empirical model under the assumption that the incidence of AGN in galaxies is independent of environment. We demonstrate that the model is broadly consistent with recent observations on the AGN halo occupation at $z=0.2$, although it may overpredict satellite AGN in massive halos at that low redshift. We then use this model to interpret the projected radial distribution of X-ray sources around high redshift ($z\approx1$) massive ($>5 \times 10^{14} \, M_\odot$) clusters, which show excess counts outside their virial radius. Such an excess naturally arises in our model as a result of sample variance. Up to 20% of the simulated projected radial distributions show excess counts similar to the observations, which are however, because of background/foreground AGN and hence, not physically associated with the cluster. Gravitational lensing, a compelling physical phenomenon, offers a unique avenue to investigate the morphology and physical properties of distant and faint celestial objects. This paper seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of observations concerning strongly lensed Dusty Star-Forming Galaxies. Emphasis is placed on the pivotal role played by cutting-edge facilities like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Square Kilometer Array Observatory. These advanced instruments, operating at disparate ends of the electromagnetic spectrum, in conjunction with the amplifying effect of gravitational lensing, promise significant steps in our understanding of these sources. Fostered by upcoming data from new generation observational campaigns, we are about to enter a new era for the study of how galaxies form and evolve. The unprecedented quantity of data that will be collected, from distances only marginally grasped up to now, will require analysis tools designed to target the specific physical peculiarities of the observed sources and handle extremely large datasets. One powerful method to investigate the complex astrophysical processes that govern the properties of galaxies is to model their observed spectral energy distribution (SED) at different stages of evolution and times throughout the history of the Universe. To address these challenges, we have developed GalaPy, a new library for modelling and fitting SEDs of galaxies from the X-ray to the radio band, as well as the evolution of their components and dust attenuation/reradiation. GalaPy incorporates both empirical and physically-motivated star formation histories, state-of-the-art single stellar population synthesis libraries, a two-component dust model for attenuation, an age-dependent energy conservation algorithm to compute dust reradiation, and additional sources of stellar continuum such as synchrotron, nebular/free-free emission and X-ray radiation from low and high mass binary stars. GalaPy has a hybrid implementation that combines the high performance of compiled C++ with the flexibility of Python, and exploits an object-oriented design. It generates models on the fly without relying on templates, and exploits fully Bayesian parameter space sampling. In this first work, we introduce the project and showcase the photometric SED fitting tools already available to users. We present the first spectroscopic ALMA follow-up for a pilot sample of nine Radio-Selected NIRdark galaxies in the COSMOS field. These sources were initially selected as radio-detected sources (S(3GHz)>12.65 uJy), lacking an optical/NIR counterpart in the COSMOS2015 catalog (Ks>24.7 mag), with just three of them subsequently detected in the deeper COSMOS2020. Several studies highlighted how this selection could provide a population of highly dust-obscured, massive, and star-bursting galaxies. With these new ALMA observations, we assess the spectroscopic redshifts of this pilot sample of sources and improve the quality of the physical properties estimated through SED-fitting. Moreover, we measure the quantity of molecular gas present inside these galaxies and forecast their potential evolutionary path, finding that the RS-NIRdark galaxies could represent a likely population of high-z progenitors of the massive and passive galaxies discovered at z~3. Finally, we present some initial constraints on the kinematics of the ISM within the analyzed galaxies, reporting a high fraction (~55%) of double-peaked lines that can be interpreted as the signature of a rotating structure in our targets or with the presence of major mergers in our sample. Our results presented in this paper showcase the scientific potential of (sub)mm observations for this elusive population of galaxies and highlight the potential contribution of these sources in the evolution of the massive and passive galaxies at high-z., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures (+2 in the appendix), 6 tables. Evolutionary models suggest that the initial growth phases of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are dust-enshrouded, and characterised by jet/wind outflows that should gradually clear the interstellar medium (ISM) in the host by heating and/or expelling the surrounding gas. eFEDSJ091157.4$+$014327 (z$\sim$0.6) was selected from X-ray samples for its characteristics that are similar to sources with outflows which include red, obscured and X-ray luminous. We aim to explore the environment around this red quasar and characterise kinematics within the system. We used spatially resolved spectroscopic data from Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) with an average seeing of 0.6" to construct flux, velocity and velocity dispersions maps. We found that the quasar is embedded in an interacting and merging system with three other galaxies $\sim$ 50 kpc from its nucleus. Spatially resolved kinematics reveal that the quasar has extended ionised outflows of up to 9.2 kpc with positive and negative velocities up to 1000 km s$^{-1}$ and -1200 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The velocity dispersion (W$_{80}$) ranges from 600-1800 km s$^{-1}$. We associate the presence of turbulent and high-velocity components with the outflow. The total mass outflow rate is estimated to be $\sim$ 10 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic power of 2x10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The kinetic coupling efficiencies range from 0.01%-0.03% and the momentum boosts are $\sim$ 0.2. These low values indicate that the ionised outflow is not energetically relevant. These values don't align with the theoretical predictions of both radiation-pressure-driven outflows and energy-conserving mechanisms. We propose and perform a joint analysis of the two different mass estimates of galaxy clusters, namely the hydrostatic and caustic techniques. Firstly, we show comprehensively that the mass bias between these two techniques can be possibly alleviated when cluster-specific assumptions constrained using the hydrostatic technique are utilized within the caustic technique. While at face value this demotes the caustic technique from a completely independent method, this allows one to further tighten the constraints on the cluster mass and subsequently, allow us to test modifications to gravity. Implementing the aforementioned formalism for two well-observed massive galaxy clusters, A2029 and A2142, we highlight the proof of concept. In the current implementation, we use this method to constrain the Chameleon screening and Vainshtein screening. The large-scale environment of the cosmic web is believed to impact galaxy evolution, but there is still no consensus regarding the mechanisms. We use a semi-analytic model (SAM) galaxy catalog to study the star formation and dust content of local galaxies in different cosmic environments of the cosmic web, namely voids, filaments, walls, and nodes. We find a strong impact of the environment only for galaxies with $M_{\rm stars}\lesssim10^{10.8}\, M_\odot$: the less dense the environment, the larger the star formation rate and dust content at fixed stellar mass. This is attributed to the fact that galaxies in less dense environments typically feature younger stellar populations, a slower evolution of their stellar mass and a delayed star formation compared to galaxies in denser environments. As for galaxies with $M_{\rm stars}\gtrsim 10^{10.8}\, M_\odot$ differences among environments are milder due to the disc instability (DI) driven supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth implemented in the SAM, which makes SMBH growth, and thus galaxy quenching, environment insensitive. We qualitatively test our predictions against observations by identifying environments in the SDSS-DR16 using dust masses derived from the GAMA survey. The agreement is encouraging, particularly at ${\rm log} \, M_{\rm stars}/M_\odot\gtrsim 10.5-11$, where sSFRs and dust masses appear quite environment-insensitive. In the last decades, an increasing scientific interest has been growing in the elusive population of "dark" (i.e. lacking an optical/NIR counterpart) Dusty Star-Forming Galaxies (DSFGs). Although extremely promising for their likely contribution to the cosmic Star Formation Rate Density and for their possible role in the evolution of the first massive and passive galaxies around $z\sim3$, the difficulty in selecting statistically significant samples of dark DSFGs is limiting their scientific potentialities. This work presents the first panchromatic study of a sample of 263 Radio-Selected NIRdark galaxies discovered in the COSMOS field following the procedure by Talia+21. These sources are selected as radio-bright galaxies (S(3GHz)>12.65 uJy) with no counterpart in the NIR-selected COSMOS2020 catalog (Ks > 25.5 mag). For these sources, we build a new photometric catalog including accurate photometry from the optical to the radio obtained with a new deblending pipeline (PhoEBO: Photometry Extractor for Blended Objects). We employ this catalog to estimate the photo-zs and the physical properties of the galaxies through an SED-fitting procedure performed with two different codes (Magphys and Cigale). Finally, we estimate the AGN contamination in our sample by performing a series of complementary tests. The high values of the median extinction (Av ~ 4) and star formation rate (SFR ~ 500 Msun/yr) confirm the likely DSFG nature of the RS-NIRdark galaxies. The median photo-z (z~3) and the presence of a significant tail of high-z candidates (z>4.5) suggest that these sources are important contributors to the cosmic SFRD and the evolutionary path of galaxies at high redshifts., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We have carried out HST snapshot observations at 1.1 $\mu$m of 281 candidate strongly lensed galaxies identified in the wide-area extragalactic surveys conducted with the Herschel space observatory. Our candidates comprise systems with flux densities at $500\,\mu$m$ S_{500}\geq 80$ mJy. We model and subtract the surface brightness distribution for 130 systems, where we identify a candidate for the foreground lens candidate. After combining visual inspection, archival high-resolution observations, and lens subtraction, we divide the systems into different classes according to their lensing likelihood. We confirm 65 systems to be lensed. Of these, 30 are new discoveries. We successfully perform lens modelling and source reconstruction on 23 systems, where the foreground lenses are isolated galaxies and the background sources are detected in the HST images. All the systems are successfully modelled as a singular isothermal ellipsoid. The Einstein radii of the lenses and the magnifications of the background sources are consistent with previous studies. However, the background source circularised radii (between 0.34 kpc and 1.30 kpc) are $\sim$3 times smaller than the ones measured in the sub-mm/mm for a similarly selected and partially overlapping sample. We compare our lenses with those in the SLACS survey, confirming that our lens-independent selection is more effective at picking up fainter and diffuse galaxies and group lenses. The stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) produced by merging neutron stars exhibits a peak in the kHz band. In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework to exploit this distinctive feature through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis using a simulated dataset of SGWB measurements within this frequency range. The aim is to use the SGWB peak as an observable to constrain a set of astrophysical and cosmological parameters that accurately describe the sources of the SGWB. We examine how variations in these parameters impact the morphology of the SGWB and investigate the necessary sensitivity to effectively constrain them. Given our priors on astrophysical and cosmological parameters, and assuming a power-law integrated sensitivity curve of the order of $10^{-11}$ between 1 kHz and 5 kHz, we show that the values of the chirp mass and common envelope efficiency of the binary systems are retrieved with percent accuracy. Furthermore, the method allows for the reconstruction of the cosmological expansion history populated by these binaries, encompassing the Hubble constant, matter abundance, and the effective equation of state of dark energy., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The origin of obscuration in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is still an open debate. In particular, it is unclear what drives the relative contributions to the line-of-sight column densities from galaxy-scale and torus-linked obscuration. The latter source is expected to play a significant role in Unification Models, while the former is thought to be relevant in both Unification and Evolutionary Models. In this work, we make use of a combination of cosmological semi-analytic models and semi-empirical prescriptions for the properties of galaxies and AGN, to study AGN obscuration. We consider a detailed object-by-object modelling of AGN evolution, including different AGN light curves (LCs), gas density profiles, and also AGN feedback-induced gas cavities. Irrespective of our assumptions on specific AGN LC or galaxy gas fractions, we find that, on the strict assumption of an exponential profile for the gas component, galaxy-scale obscuration alone can hardly reproduce the fraction of $\log (N_{\rm H}/$cm$^{-2}) \geq 24$ sources at least at $z\lesssim3$. This requires an additional torus component with a thickness that decreases with luminosity to match the data. The torus should be present in all evolutionary stages of a visible AGN to be effective, although galaxy-scale gas obscuration may be sufficient to reproduce the obscured fraction with $22<\log (N_{\rm H}/$cm$^{-2})<24$ (Compton-thin, CTN) if we assume extremely compact gas disc components. [abridged] We propose a model of the Universe (dubbed $\eta$CDM) featuring a stochastic evolution of the cosmological quantities, that is meant to render small deviations from homogeneity/isotropy on scales of $30-50\, h^{-1}$ Mpc at late cosmic times, associated to the emergence of the cosmic web. Specifically, we prescribe that the behavior of the matter/radiation energy densities in different patches of the Universe with such a size can be effectively described by a stochastic version of the mass-energy evolution equation. The latter includes an appropriate noise term that statistically accounts for local fluctuations due to inhomogeneities, anisotropic stresses and matter flows. The evolution of the different patches as a function of cosmic time is rendered via the diverse realizations of the noise term; meanwhile, at any given cosmic time, sampling the ensemble of patches will originate a nontrivial spatial distribution of the cosmological quantities. The overall behavior of the Universe will be obtained by averaging over the patch ensemble. We assume a physically reasonable parameterization of the noise term, gauging it against a wealth of cosmological datasets. We find that, with respect to standard $\Lambda$CDM, the ensemble-averaged cosmic dynamics in the $\eta$CDM model is substantially altered in three main respects: (i) an accelerated expansion is enforced at late cosmic times without the need for any additional exotic component (e.g., dark energy); (ii) the spatial curvature can stay small even in a low-density Universe; (iii) matter can acquire an effective negative pressure at late times. We provide predictions for the variance of the cosmological quantities among different patches of the Universe at late cosmic times. In the standard quasar model, the accretion disk obscuration is due to the canonical dusty torus. Here, we argue that a substantial part of the quasar obscuration can come from the interstellar medium (ISM) when the quasars are embedded in compact starbursts. We use an obscuration-unbiased sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars at $z\approx 1-3$ and archival ALMA submillimeter host galaxy sizes to investigate the ISM contribution to the quasar obscuration. We calculate SFR and ISM column densities for the IR quasars and a control sample of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) not hosting quasar activity and show that: (1) the quasar obscured fraction is constant up to $\rm SFR\approx 300 \: M_{\odot} \: yr^{-1}$, and then increases towards higher SFR, suggesting that the ISM obscuration plays a significant role in starburst host galaxies, and (2) at $\rm SFR\gtrsim 300 \: M_{\odot} \: yr^{-1}$, the SMGs and IR quasars have similarly compact submillimeter sizes ($R_{\rm e}\approx 0.5-3\rm \: kpc$) and, consequently, the ISM can heavily obscure the quasar, even reaching Compton-thick ($N_{\rm H}>10^{24} \rm \: cm^{-2}$) levels in extreme cases. In the context of an evolutionary model, the outflow phase of an Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) occurs at the peak of its activity, once the central SMBH is massive enough to generate sufficient power to counterbalance the potential well of the host galaxy. This phase plays a vital role in galaxy evolution. We aim to apply various selection methods to isolate powerful AGNs in the feedback phase, trace and characterise their outflows, and explore the link between AGN luminosity and outflow properties. We applied a combination of methods to the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth survey (eFEDS) catalogue and isolated ~1400 candidates at z>0.5 out of ~11750 AGNs (~12\%). We tested the robustness of our selection on the small subsample of 50 sources with available good quality SDSS spectra at 0.51\%. We find that the majority of the outflows have momentum flux ratios lower than 20 which rules out an energy-conserving nature. About 12 billion years ago, the Universe was first experiencing light again after the dark ages, and galaxies filled the environment with stars, metals and dust. How efficient was this process? How fast did these primordial galaxies form stars and dust? We can answer these questions by tracing the Star Formation Rate Density (SFRD) back to its widely unknown high redshift tail, traditionally observed in the Near-InfraRed (NIR), Optical and UV bands. Thus, the objects with a high amount of dust were missing. We aim to fill this knowledge gap by studying Radio Selected NIR-dark (\textit{RS-NIRdark}) sources, i.e. sources not having a counterpart at UV-to-NIR wavelengths. We widen the sample by Talia et al. (2021) from 197 to 272 objects in the COSMic evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, including also photometrically contaminated sources, previously excluded. Another important step forward consists in the visual inspection of each source in the bands from u* to MIPS-24$\mu$m. According to their "environment" in the different bands, we are able to highlight different cases of study and calibrate an appropriate photometric procedure for the objects affected by confusion issues. We estimate that the contribution of RS-NIRdark to the Cosmic SFRD at 3$<$z$<$5 is $\sim$10--25$\%$ of that based on UV-selected galaxies.

We present an analysis of the gas kinematics in NGC 2992, based on VLT/MUSE, ALMA and VLA data, aimed at characterising the disk, the wind and their interplay in the cold molecular and warm ionised phases. CO(2-1) and H$\rm \alpha~$ arise from a multiphase disk with inclination 80 deg and radii 1.5 and 1.8 kpc, respectively. We find that the velocity dispersion of the cold molecular phase is consistent with that of star forming galaxies at the same redshift, except in the inner 600 pc region, and in the region between the cone walls and the disk. This suggests that a disk-wind interaction locally boosts the gas turbulence. We detect a clumpy ionised wind distributed in two wide opening angle ionisation cones reaching scales of 7 kpc. The [O III] wind expands with velocity exceeding -1000 km/s in the inner 600 pc, a factor of 5 larger than the previously reported wind velocity. Based on spatially resolved electron density and ionisation parameter maps, we infer an ionised outflow mass of $M_{\rm of,ion} = (3.2 \pm 0.3) \times \, 10^7 \, M_{\odot}$, and a total ionised outflow rate of $\dot M_{\rm of,ion}=13.5\pm1$ \sfr. We detected clumps of cold molecular gas located above and below the disk reaching maximum projected distances and velocities of 1.7 kpc and 200 km/s, respectively. On these scales, the wind is multiphase, with a fast ionised component and a slower molecular one, and a total mass of $M_{\rm of, ion+mol}= 5.8 \times 10^7 \, M_{\odot}$, of which the molecular component carries the bulk of the mass. The dusty molecular outflowing clumps and the turbulent ionised gas are located at the edges of the radio bubbles, suggesting that the bubbles interact with the surrounding medium through shocks. In recent years, increasing attention has been devoted to semi empirical, data-driven models to tackle some aspects of the complex and still largely debated topic of galaxy formation and evolution. We here present a new semi empirical model whose marking feature is simplicity: it relies on solely two assumptions, one initial condition and two free parameters. Galaxies are connected to evolving dark matter haloes through abundance matching between specific halo accretion rate (sHAR) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Quenching is treated separately, in a fully empirical way, to marginalize over quiescent galaxies and test our assumption on the sSFR evolution without contaminations from passive objects. Our flexible and transparent model is able to reproduce the observed stellar mass functions up to $z\sim 5$, giving support to our hypothesis of a monotonic relation between sHAR and sSFR. We then exploit the model to test a hypothesis on morphological evolution of galaxies. We attempt to explain the bulge/disk bimodality in terms of the two halo accretion modes: fast and slow accretion. Specifically, we speculate that bulge/spheroidal components might form during the early phase of fast halo growth, while disks form during the later phase of slow accretion. [abridged] Recently, in Benetti et al. (Astrophys. J. 2023, 949, 65), we suggested that the dark matter (DM) component in galaxies may originate fractional gravity. In such a framework, the DM component exists, but the gravitational potential associated to its density distribution is determined by a modified Poisson equation including fractional derivatives, which are meant to describe nonlocal effects. In Benetti et al., we showed that fractional gravity worked very well for reproducing the kinematics of disk-dominated galaxies, especially dwarfs; there is also preliminary evidence that the strength of fractional effects tends to weaken toward more massive systems. Here, we aim to test fractional gravity in galaxy clusters, with a twofold aim: (i) perform an independent sanity check that it can accurately describe such large and massive structures; (ii) derive a clear-cut trend for its strength in systems with different DM masses. To this purpose, we forward model the density and pressure distributions of the intracluster medium (ICM), working out the hydrostatic equilibrium equation in fractional gravity. Then, we perform a Bayesian analysis of the X-COP galaxy cluster sample and infer constraints on the fractional gravity parameters, for individual clusters as well as stacked clusters. We find that fractional gravity performs remarkably well in modeling the ICM profiles for the X-COP sample. We also confirm the weakening of the fractional gravity effects toward more massive systems and derive the overall scaling of the fractional gravity parameters from dwarf galaxies to massive clusters, spanning six orders of magnitude in DM mass. We look for possible evidence of a non-minimal coupling (NMC) between dark matter (DM) and gravity using data from the X-COP compilation of galaxy clusters. We consider a theoretically motivated NMC that may dynamically arise from the collective behavior of the coarse-grained DM field (e.g., via Bose-Einstein condensation) with averaging/coherence length $\L_{\mathrm{nmc}}$. In the Newtonian limit, the NMC modifies the Poisson equation by a term $\L_{\mathrm{nmc}}^2 \nabla^2 \rho$ proportional to the Laplacian of the DM density itself. We show that this term when acting as a perturbation over the standard Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile of cold DM particles, can yield DM halo density profiles capable of correctly fitting galaxy clusters' pressure profiles with an accuracy comparable and in some cases even better than the standard cold DM NFW profile. Galactic binary neutron stars (BNSs) are a unique laboratory to probe the evolution of BNSs and their progenitors. Here, we use a new version of the population synthesis code SEVN to evolve the population of Galactic BNSs, by modeling the spin up and down of pulsars self-consistently. We analyze the merger rate $\mathcal{R}_{\rm MW}$, orbital period $P_{\rm orb}$, eccentricity $e$, spin period $P$, and spin period derivative $\dot{P}$ of the BNS population. Values of the common envelope parameter $\alpha=1 - 3$ and an accurate model of the Milky Way star formation history best reproduce the BNS merger rate in our Galaxy ($\mathcal{R}_{\rm MW}\approx{}30$ Myr$^{-1}$). We apply radio-selection effects to our simulated BNSs and compare them to the observed population. Using a Dirichlet process Gaussian mixture method, we evaluate the four-dimensional likelihood in the $(P_{\rm orb}, e, P, \dot{P})$ space, by comparing our radio-selected simulated pulsars against Galactic BNSs. Our analysis favours an uniform initial distribution for both the magnetic field ($10^{10-13}$ G) and the spin period ($10-100$ ms). The implementation of radio selection effects is critical to match not only the spin period and period derivative, but also the orbital period and eccentricity of Galactic BNSs. Quantifying changes in galaxies' interstellar medium (ISM) abundance after quenching star formation is an important aspect of galaxy evolution, but it is poorly constrained beyond the local universe. We characterise the dust-related properties in 548 quiescent galaxies observed at $0.1

[abridged] We explore the possibility that the dark matter (DM) component in galaxies may originate fractional gravity. In such a framework, the standard law of inertia continues to hold, but the gravitational potential associated to a given DM density distribution is determined by a modified Poisson equation including fractional derivatives (i.e., derivatives of non-integer type), that are meant to describe non-local effects. We derive analytically the expression of the potential that in fractional gravity corresponds to various spherically symmetric density profiles, including the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) distribution that is usually exploited to describe virialized halos of collisionless DM as extracted from $N-$body cosmological simulations. We show that in fractional gravity the dynamics of a test particle moving in a cuspy NFW density distribution is substantially altered with respect to the Newtonian case (i.e., basing on the standard Poisson equation), mirroring what in Newtonian gravity would instead be sourced by a density profile with an inner core. We test the fractional gravity framework on galactic scales, showing that: (i) it can provide accurate fits to the stacked rotation curves of galaxies with different properties; (ii) it can reproduce to reasonable accuracy the observed shape and scatter of the radial acceleration relation (RAR); (iii) it can properly account for the universal surface density and the core radius vs. disk scale-length scaling relations. We constrain the Chameleon \textit{screening} mechanism in galaxy clusters, essentially obtaining limits on the coupling strength $\beta$ and the asymptotic value of the field $\phi_{\infty}$. For this purpose, we utilized a collection of the 9 relaxed galaxy clusters within the X-COP compilation in the redshift range of $z \le 0.1$. We implement the formalism assuming an NFW mass profile for the dark matter density and study the degeneracy present between the mass $\M$ and the chameleon coupling with a high degree of improvement in the constraints for excluded parameter space. We recast our constrain to an upper limit on the scalaron field in \fofr sub-class of models of $|f_{R0}|\le 9.2\times 10^{-6}$, using all the nine clusters and $|f_{R0}|\le 1.2\times 10^{-5}$ using only 5 clusters with WL priors taken into account, at a $95\%$ confidence level. Observations suggest that the amount of galactic dust in the Universe decreased by a factor $\sim 2-3$ during the last $\sim 8$ Gyr. However, cosmological models of galaxy evolution usually struggle to explain this decrease. Here we use the semi-analytic model (SAM) L-Galaxies2020 to show that this drop may be reproduced assuming standard prescriptions for dust production and evolution. We extend the SAM with i) a state-of-the-art dust model which adopts the two-size approximation and ii) a new disc instability criterion which triggers bulge and central black hole growth. The model reproduces some fundamental properties of the local galaxy population, such as the fraction of spheroid-dominated galaxies and some scaling relations involving dust. Moreover, the model predicts a galactic dust drop from $z \sim 1 \rightarrow 0$, which becomes closer to the observed one when adopting the new treatment of disc instabilities. This result is related to the newly implemented super-massive black hole growth during disc instabilities, which enhances the quenching of massive galaxies. Consequently, these objects feature a lower gas and dust content. We provide a census of the contribution of all the processes affecting the galactic dust content. Accretion is the dominant dust mass growth process. Destruction by supernovae, astration and ejection by winds have all a non-negligible role in decreasing the overall dust content in galaxies below $z \sim 1$. Many recent works have shown that the angular resolution of ground-based detectors is too poor to characterize the anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB). For this reason, we asked ourselves if a constellation of space-based instruments could be more suitable. We consider the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a constellation of multiple LISA-like clusters, and the Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO). Specifically, we test whether these detector constellations can probe the anisotropies of the SGWB. For this scope, we considered the SGWB produced by two astrophysical sources: merging compact binaries and a recently proposed scenario for massive black-hole seed formation through multiple mergers of stellar remnants. We find that measuring the angular power spectrum of the SGWB anisotropies is almost unattainable. However, it turns out that it could be possible to probe the SGWB anisotropies through cross-correlation with the CMB fluctuations. In particular, we find that a constellation of two LISA-like detectors and CMB-S4 can marginally constrain the cross-correlation between the CMB lensing convergence and the SGWB produced by the black hole seed formation process. A complete census of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is a prerequisite for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic time. A significant challenge toward this goal is the whereabouts of heavily obscured AGN that remain uncertain. This paper sets new constraints on the demographics of this population by developing a methodology that combines X-ray spectral information with priors derived from multiwavelength observations. We select X-ray AGN in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey and fit their $2.2-500\mu m$ spectral energy distributions with galaxy and AGN templates to determine the mid-infrared ($6\mu m$) luminosity of the AGN component. Empirical correlations between X-ray and $6\mu m$ luminosities are then adopted to infer the intrinsic accretion luminosity at X-rays for individual AGN. This is used as prior information in our Bayesian X-ray spectral analysis to estimate physical properties, such as line-of-sight obscuration. Our approach breaks the degeneracies between accretion luminosity and obscuration that affect X-ray spectral analysis, particularly for the most heavily obscured (Compton-Thick) AGN with low photon counts X-ray spectra. The X-ray spectral results are then combined with the selection function of the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey to derive the AGN space density and a Compton-Thick fraction of $21.0^{+16.1}_{-9.9}\%$ at redshifts $z<0.5$. At higher redshift, our analysis suggests upper limits to the Compton-Thick AGN fraction of $\le 40\%$. We exploit the recent determination of cosmic star formation rate (SFR) density at redshifts $z\gtrsim 4$ to derive astroparticle constraints on three common dark matter scenarios alternative to standard cold dark matter (CDM): warm dark matter (WDM), fuzzy dark matter ($\psi$DM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). Our analysis relies on the UV luminosity functions measured by the Hubble Space Telescope out to $z\lesssim 10$ and down to UV magnitudes $M_{\rm UV}\lesssim -17$. We extrapolate these to fainter yet unexplored magnitude ranges, and perform abundance matching with the halo mass functions in a given DM scenario, so obtaining a relationship between the UV magnitude and the halo mass. We then compute the cosmic SFR density by integrating the extrapolated UV luminosity functions down to a faint magnitude limit $M_{\rm UV}^{\rm lim}$, which is determined via the above abundance matching relationship by two free parameters: the minimum threshold halo mass $M_{\rm H}^{\rm GF}$ for galaxy formation, and the astroparticle quantity $X$ characterizing each DM scenario (namely, particle mass for WDM and $\psi$DM, and kinetic temperature at decoupling $T_X$ for SIDM). We perform Bayesian inference on such parameters via a MCMC technique by comparing the cosmic SFR density from our approach to the current observational estimates at $z\gtrsim 4$, constraining the WDM particle mass to $m_X\approx 1.2^{+0.3\,(11.3)}_{-0.4\,(-0.5)}$ keV, the $\psi$DM particle mass to $m_X\approx 3.7^{+1.8\,(+12.9.3)}_{-0.4\,(-0.5)}\times 10^{-22}$ eV, and the SIDM temperature to $T_X\approx 0.21^{+0.04\,(+1.8)}_{-0.06\,(-0.07)}$ keV at $68\%$ ($95\%$) confidence level. This paper explores the role of small-scale environment ($<1$ Mpc) in modulating accretion events onto supermassive black holes by studying the incidence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in massive clusters of galaxies. A flexible, data-driven semi-empirical model is developed based on a minimal set of parameters and under the zero order assumption that the incidence of AGN in galaxies is independent of environment. This is used to predict how the fraction of X-ray selected AGN among galaxies in massive dark matter halos ($\gtrsim 3\times 10^{14}\,M_{\odot}$) evolves with redshift and reveal tensions with observations. At high redshift, $z\sim1.2$, the model underpredicts AGN fractions, particularly at high X-ray luminosities, $L_X(\rm 2-10\,keV) \gtrsim 10^{44}\, erg \, s^{-1}$. At low redshift, $z\sim0.2$, the model estimates fractions of moderate luminosity AGN ($L_X(\rm 2-10\,keV) \gtrsim 10^{43}\, erg \, s^{-1}$) that are a factor of $2-3$ higher than the observations. These findings reject the zero order assumption on which the semi-empirical model hinges and point to a strong and redshift-dependent influence of the small-scale environment on the growth of black holes. Cluster of galaxies appear to promote AGN activity relative to the model expectation at $z\sim1.2$ and suppress it close to the present day. To understand the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) phenomenon and their impact on the evolution of galaxies, a complete AGN census is required; however, finding heavily obscured AGNs is observationally challenging. Here we use the deep and extensive multi-wavelength data in the COSMOS field to select a complete sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars ($L_{\rm AGN,IR}>10^{45}\rm \: erg\: s^{-1}$) at $z<3$, with minimal obscuration bias, using detailed UV-to-far IR spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We complement our SED constraints with X-ray and radio observations to further investigate the properties of the sample. Overall, 322 of the IR quasars are detected by Chandra and have individual X-ray spectral constraints. From a combination of X-ray stacking and $L_{\rm 2-10\rm keV}$ - $L_{\rm 6\: \mu m}$ analyses, we show that the majority of the X-ray faint and undetected quasars are heavily obscured (many are likely Compton thick), highlighting the effectiveness of the mid-IR band to find obscured AGNs. We find that 355 ($\approx$61%) IR quasars are obscured ($N_{\rm H}>10^{22}\rm \: cm^{-2}$) and identify differences in the average properties between the obscured and unobscured quasars: (1) obscured quasars have star-formation rates $\approx 3$ times higher than unobscured systems for no significant difference in stellar mass and (2) obscured quasars have stronger radio emission than unobscured systems, with a radio-loudness parameter $\approx 0.2 \rm \: dex$ higher. The relative roles of mergers and star formation in regulating galaxy growth are still a matter of intense debate. We here present our DECODE, a new Discrete statistical sEmi-empiriCal mODEl specifically designed to predict rapidly and efficiently, in a full cosmological context, galaxy assembly and merger histories for any given input stellar mass-halo mass (SMHM) relation. DECODE generates object-by-object dark matter merger trees (hence discrete) from accurate subhalo mass and infall redshift probability functions (hence statistical) for all subhaloes, including those residing within other subhaloes, with virtually no resolution limits on mass or volume. Merger trees are then converted into galaxy assembly histories via an input, redshift dependent SMHM relation, which is highly sensitive to the significant systematics in the galaxy stellar mass function and on its evolution with cosmic time. DECODE can accurately reproduce the predicted mean galaxy merger rates and assembly histories of hydrodynamic simulations and semi-analytic models, when adopting in input their SMHM relations. In the present work we use DECODE to prove that only SMHM relations implied by stellar mass functions characterized by large abundances of massive galaxies and significant redshift evolution, at least at $M_\star \gtrsim 10^{11} \, M_\odot$, can simultaneously reproduce the local abundances of satellite galaxies, the galaxy (major merger) pairs since $z \sim 3$, and the growth of Brightest Cluster Galaxies. We study the evolution of dust in a cosmological volume using a hydrodynamical simulation in which the dust production is coupled with the MUPPI (MUlti Phase Particle Integrator) sub-resolution model of star formation and feedback. As for the latter, we keep as reference the model setup calibrated previously to match the general properties of Milky Way like galaxies in zoom-in simulations. However, we suggest that an increase of the star formation efficiency with the local dust to gas ratio would better reproduce the observed evolution of the cosmic star formation density. Moreover, the paucity of quenched galaxies at low redshift demands a stronger role of AGN feedback. We tune the parameters ruling direct dust production from evolved stars and accretion in the inter stellar medium to get scaling relations involving dust, stellar mass and metallicity in good agreement with observations. In low mass galaxies the accretion process is inefficient. As a consequence, they remain poorer in silicate and small grains than higher mass ones. We reproduce reasonably well the few available data on the radial distribution of dust outside the galactic region, supporting the assumption that the dust and gas dynamics are well coupled at galactic scales., Comment: MNRAS accepted

We look for empirical evidence of a non-minimal coupling (NMC) between dark matter (DM) and gravity in the dynamics of local spiral galaxies. In particular, we consider a theoretically motivated NMC that may arise dynamically from the collective behavior of the coarse-grained DM field (e.g., via Bose-Einstein condensation) with averaging/coherence length $L$. In the Newtonian limit, this NMC amounts to modify the Poisson equation by a term $L^{2} \nabla^{2} \rho$ proportional to the Laplacian of the DM density itself. We show that such a term, when acting as a perturbation over the standard Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile of cold DM particles, can substantially alter the dynamical properties of galaxies, in terms of their total radial acceleration within the disk and rotation velocity. Specifically, we find that this NMC model can properly fit the stacked rotation curves of local spiral galaxies with different velocities at the optical radius, including dwarfs and low-surface brightness systems, at a level of precision comparable to, and in some instances even better than, the phenomenological Burkert profile. Finally we show that, extrapolating down to smaller masses the scaling of $L$ vs. halo mass found from the above rotation curve analysis, the NMC model can adequately reproduce the radial acceleration relation (or RAR) in shape and normalization down to the dwarf spheroidal galaxy range, a task which constitutes a serious challenge for alternative DM models even inclusive of baryonic effects., Comment: 39 pages, 22 figures. A mild correlation exists in active galaxies between the mean black hole accretion, as traced by the mean X-ray luminosity $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>$, and the host galaxy stellar mass M$_*$, characterised by a normalisation steadily decreasing with cosmic time and lower in more quiescent galaxies. We create comprehensive semi-empirical mock catalogues of active black holes to pin down which parameters control the shape and evolution of the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation of X-ray detected active galaxies. We find that the normalisation of the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation is largely independent of the fraction of active galaxies (the duty cycle), but strongly dependent on the mean Eddington ratio, when adopting a constant underlying M$_{\rm BH}-{\rm M}_*$ relation as suggested by observational studies. The data point to a decreasing mean Eddington ratio with cosmic time and with galaxy stellar mass at fixed redshift. Our data can be reproduced by black holes and galaxies evolving on similar M$_{\rm BH}-{\rm M}_*$ relations but progressively decreasing their average Eddington ratios, mean X-ray luminosities, and specific star formation rates, when moving from the starburst to the quiescent phase. Models consistent with the observed $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation and independent measurements of the mean Eddington ratios, are characterised by M$_{\rm BH}-{\rm M}_*$ relations lower than those derived from dynamically measured local black holes. Our results point to the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation as a powerful diagnostic to: 1) probe black hole-galaxy scaling relations and the level of accretion onto black holes; 2) efficiently break the degeneracies between duty cycles and accretion rates in cosmological models of black holes., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS. 11 pages, 5 figures

Velocity dispersion ($\sigma$) is a key driver for galaxy structure and evolution. We here present a comprehensive semi-empirical approach to compute $\sigma$ via detailed Jeans modelling assuming both a constant and scale-dependent mass-to-light ratio $M^*/L$. We compare with a large sample of local galaxies from MaNGA and find that both models can reproduce the Faber-Jackson (FJ) relation and the weak dependence of $\sigma$ on bulge-to-total ratio $B/T$ (for $B/T\gtrsim 0.25$). The dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio within $R\lesssim R_e$ can be fully accounted for by a gradient in $M^*/L$. We then build velocity dispersion evolutionary tracks $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ (within an aperture) along the main progenitor dark matter haloes assigning stellar masses, effective radii and Sersic indices via a variety of abundance matching and empirically motivated relations. We find: 1) clear evidence for downsizing in $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ along the progenitor tracks; 2) at fixed stellar mass $\sigma\propto(1+z)^{0.2-0.3}$ depending on the presence or not of a gradient in $M^*/L$. We extract $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ from the TNG50 hydrodynamic simulation and find very similar results to our models with constant $M^*/L$. The increasing dark matter fraction within $R_e$ tends to flatten the $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ along the progenitors at $z \gtrsim 1$ in constant $M^*/L$ models, while $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ have a steeper evolution in the presence of a stellar gradient. We then show that a combination of mergers and gas accretion are likely responsible for the constant or increasing $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ with time. Finally, our $\sigma_{ap}[M^*,z]$ are consistent with a nearly constant and steep $M_{bh}-\sigma$ relation at $z\lesssim 2$, with black hole masses derived from the $L_X-M^*$ relation., Comment: MNRAS accepted, 22 pages, 17 figures

We present modelling of ~0.1arcsec resolution Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimeter Array imaging of seven strong gravitationally lensed galaxies detected by the Herschel Space Observatory. Four of these systems are galaxy-galaxy scale strong lenses, with the remaining three being group-scale lenses. Through careful modelling of visibilities, we infer the mass profiles of the lensing galaxies and by determining the magnification factors, we investigate the intrinsic properties and morphologies of the lensed sub-millimetre sources. We find that these sub-millimetre sources all have ratios of star formation rate to dust mass that is consistent with or in excess of the mean ratio for high-redshift sub-millimetre galaxies and low redshift ultra-luminous infrared galaxies. The contribution to the infrared luminosity from possible AGN is not quantified and so could be biasing our star formation rates to higher values.
