Abstract

The Australian, Chinese, European, Indian, and North American pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations recently reported, at varying levels, evidence for the presence of a nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB). Given that each PTA made different choices in modeling their data, we perform a comparison of the GWB and individual pulsar noise parameters across the results reported from the PTAs that constitute the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). We show that despite making different modeling choices, there is no significant difference in the GWB parameters that are measured by the different PTAs, agreeing within $1\sigma$. The pulsar noise parameters are also consistent between different PTAs for the majority of the pulsars included in these analyses. We bridge the differences in modeling choices by adopting a standardized noise model for all pulsars and PTAs, finding that under this model there is a reduction in the tension in the pulsar noise parameters. As part of this reanalysis, we "extended" each PTA's data set by adding extra pulsars that were not timed by that PTA. Under these extensions, we find better constraints on the GWB amplitude and a higher signal-to-noise ratio for the Hellings and Downs correlations. These extensions serve as a prelude to the benefits offered by a full combination of data across all pulsars in the IPTA, i.e., the IPTA's Data Release 3, which will involve not just adding in additional pulsars, but also including data from all three PTAs where any given pulsar is timed by more than as single PTA., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

This paper presents numerical simulations of a bichromatic wave group propagating and breaking over a fixed breaker bar. The simulations are performed using a newly stabilized Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) two-equation turbulence closure, which solves the longstanding problem of over-production of turbulence beneath surface waves in the nearly potential flow region prior to breaking. This model has previously been tested on small-scale spilling breaking regular waves, whereas in this work focus is on full (rather than model) scale application, wave groups (rather than regular waves) and plunging (rather than spilling) breakers. Additionally this paper has novel emphasis on bottom boundary layer dynamics which are very important for cross-shore sediment transport predictions. The model is validated by comparing with results from a previous experimental campaign. The model is shown to predict the surface elevations, velocities and turbulence well in the shoaling and outer surf-zone, avoiding turbulence over-production and incorrect undertow structure typical of standard turbulence closures. Comparison with detailed boundary layer measurements in the shoaling position reveals that the model is able to accurately capture the temporal dynamics of the entire wave boundary layer, including evolution of the boundary layer thickness, velocity overshoot and phase-shifts. Comparison in the surf zone additionally reveals that the model is able to accurately capture the transport of breaking-induced turbulence into the wave boundary layer. The performance of the model indicates that it can be used directly in the simulation of cross-shore sediment transport and morphology and also be used to study important hydrodynamic processes, which can help improve the predictive skill of morphodynamic profile models applied in coastal engineering., Comment: Accepted manuscript

3. Sequential Bargaining in the Field: Evidence from Millions of Online Bargaining Interactions

Abstract

We study patterns of behavior in bilateral bargaining situations using a rich new data set describing back-and-forth sequential bargaining occurring in over 25 million listings from eBay's Best Offer platform. We compare observed behavior to predictions from the large theoretical bargaining literature. One-third of bargaining interactions end in immediate agreement, as predicted by complete-information models. The majority of sequences play out differently, ending in disagreement or delayed agreement, which have been rationalized by incomplete information models. We find that stronger bargaining power and better outside options improve agents' outcomes. Robust empirical findings that existing models cannot rationalize include reciprocal (and gradual) concession behavior and delayed disagreement. Another robust pattern at odds with existing theory is that players exhibit a preference for making and accepting offers that split the difference between the two most recent offers. These observations suggest that behavioral norms, which are neither incorporated nor explained by existing theories, play an important role in the success of bargaining outcomes.

Abstract

The CDISC Standard for Exchange of Nonclinical Data (SEND) data standard has created new opportunities for collaborative development of open-source software solutions to facilitate cross-study analyses of toxicology study data. A public-private partnership between BioCelerate and the FDA/Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) was established in part to develop and publicize novel methods to facilitate cross-study analysis of SEND datasets. As part of this work in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Users Software Exchange (PHUSE), an R package sendigR has been developed to enable users to construct a relational database from a collection of SEND datasets and then query that database to perform cross-study analyses. The sendigR package also includes an integrated Python package, xptcleaner, which can be used to harmonize the terminology used in SEND datasets by mapping to CDISC controlled terminologies. The sendigR R package is freely available on the comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) and at https://github.com/phuseorg/sendigR. An R Shiny web application was included in the R package to enable toxicologists with no coding experience to perform historical control analyses. Experienced R programmers will be able to integrate the package functions into their own custom scripts/packages and potentially contribute improvements to the functionality of sendigR. 5. Activo: Assessing the feasibility of designing and implementing a physical activity intervention for latino men

Abstract

Background: No physical activity (PA) interventions have specifically targeted Latino men despite marked health disparities in this group. Therefore, we explored the feasibility of designing a PA intervention for Latino men. Methods: We conducted six qualitative interviews with Latino men and used their feedback to modify an existing PA intervention, then conducted a 12-week demonstration trial of the adapted intervention. Results: Themes from interviews included work and family conflicts and preferring team sports. In the demonstration trial of the modified intervention, participants (N = 10) increased PA from 1.3 minutes/week (SD = 4.75) at baseline to 125.5(SD = 154.86) at follow-up (p < .05). Retention was high and participants expressed enthusiasm for the program. Conclusions: Existing interventions could be effectively modified to target physical activity in Latino men. © 2014 by the Men's Studies Press, LLC.

Abstract

This paper describes high-energy neutron inelastic scattering measurements of propagating magnetic excitations in PrBa2Cu3O6+x (x approx 0.2 and 0.93). The measurements probe the acoustic and optic modes of the antiferromagnetically-ordered copper--oxygen bilayers in the energy range 50-150 meV. The observed magnon dispersion can be described satisfactorily in this energy range by a spin wave model including intra- and inter-layer nearest-neighbour exchange constants J_parallel and J_perp. We find J_parallel = 127 +/- 10 meV and J_perp = 5.5 +/- 0.9 meV. The value of J_parallel is virtually the same as that found in YBa2Cu3O6.2, but J_perp is a factor of two smaller. To within experimental error the values of J_parallel and J_perp for PrBa2Cu3O6+x do not vary with oxygen doping., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

We report measurements of the phonon dispersion relations in non-superconducting, oxygen-deficient PrBa2Cu3O6+x (x ~ 0.2) by inelastic neutron scattering. The data are compared with a model of the lattice dynamics based on a common interaction potential. Good agreement is achieved for all but two phonon branches, which are significantly softer than predicted. These modes are found to arise predominantly from motion of the oxygen ions in the CuO2 planes. Abstract

The dispersion of the low-energy magnetic excitations of the Pr sublattice in PrBa2Cu3O6.2 is determined by inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal. The dispersion, which shows the effect of interactions with the Cu spin-waves, is well described by a model of the coupled Cu-Pr magnetic system. This enables values for the principal exchange constants to be determined, which suggest that both Pr-Pr and Cu-Pr interactions are important in producing the anomalously high ordering temperature of the Pr sublattice. Measurements of the Cu optic spin wave mode show that the inter-layer Cu-Cu exchange is significantly lower than in YBa2Cu3O6.2., Comment: To be published Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

There is limited convergence in neuroimaging investigations into volumes of subcortical brain regions in social anxiety disorder (SAD). The inconsistent findings may arise from variations in methodological approaches across studies, including sample selection based on age and clinical characteristics. The ENIGMA-Anxiety Working Group initiated a global mega-analysis to determine whether differences in subcortical volumes can be detected in adults and adolescents with SAD relative to healthy controls. Volumetric data from 37 international samples with 1115 SAD patients and 2775 controls were obtained from ENIGMA-standardized protocols for image segmentation and quality assurance. Linear mixed-effects analyses were adjusted for comparisons across seven subcortical regions in each hemisphere using family-wise error (FWE)-correction. Mixed-effects d effect sizes were calculated. In the full sample, SAD patients showed smaller bilateral putamen volume than controls (left: d = -0.077, pFWE = 0.037; right: d = -0.104, pFWE = 0.001), and a significant interaction between SAD and age was found for the left putamen (r = -0.034, pFWE = 0.045). Smaller bilateral putamen volumes (left: d = -0.141, pFWE < 0.001; right: d = -0.158, pFWE < 0.001) and larger bilateral pallidum volumes (left: d = 0.129, pFWE = 0.006; right: d = 0.099, pFWE = 0.046) were detected in adult SAD patients relative to controls, but no volumetric differences were apparent in adolescent SAD patients relative to controls. Comorbid anxiety disorders and age of SAD onset were additional determinants of SAD-related volumetric differences in subcortical regions. To conclude, subtle volumetric alterations in subcortical regions in SAD were detected. Heterogeneity in age and clinical characteristics may partly explain inconsistencies in previous findings. The association between alterations in subcortical volumes and SAD illness progression deserves further investigation, especially from adolescence into adulthood.

Abstract

The present study aims to add a novel data set on the incipient motion of a broader array of microplastic particles, on a live sediment bed comprised of finer sediment grains than those used by WS19. The incipient motion of 65 microplastic particle groups, having both regular (57) and irregular (eight) shapes, are investigated experimentally in a circular flume. Regular shapes considered include spheres, circular cylinders, circular disks, square plates, cubes, square prisms, rectangular prisms, tetrahedrons, and fibers. The present data set is combined with another from the literature, and the incipient motion conditions of the collective particles are systematically analyzed. After accounting for (1) differences in static friction as well as (2) hiding-exposure effects, reasonable agreement with the classical Shields curve for the incipient motion of sediments is achieved. These results provide deeper understanding of the fundamental transport properties and patterns of microplastic particles, on which is based the development of any successful management strategies.

Abstract

We investigate the magnetic field dipolarization in the inner magnetosphere and its associated ion flux variations, using the magnetic field and energetic ion flux data acquired by the Van Allen Probes. From a study of 74 events that appeared at L= 4.5-6.6 between 1 October 2012 and 31 October 2013, we reveal the following characteristics of the dipolarization in the inner magnetosphere: (1) its time scale is approximately 5 min; (2) it is accompanied by strong magnetic fluctuations that have a dominant frequency close to the O+ gyrofrequency; (3) ion fluxes at 20-50 keV are simultaneously enhanced with larger magnitudes for O+ than for H+; (4) after a few minutes of the dipolarization, the flux enhancement at 0.1-5 keV appears with a clear energy-dispersion signature only for O+; and (5) the energy-dispersed O+ flux enhancement appears in directions parallel or antiparallel to the magnetic field. From these characteristics, we discuss possible mechanisms that can provide selective acceleration to O+ ions at > 20 keV. We conclude that O+ ions at L= 5.4-6.6 undergo nonadiabatic local acceleration caused by oscillating electric field associated with the magnetic fluctuations and/or adiabatic convective transport from the plasma sheet to the inner magnetosphere by the impulsive electric field. At L= 4.5-5.4, however, only the former acceleration is plausible. We also conclude that the field-aligned energy-dispersed O+ ions at 0.1-5 keV originate from the ionosphere and are extracted nearly simultaneously to the onset of the dipolarization.

Abstract

Information retrieval has moved from traditional document retrieval in which search is an isolated activity, to modern information access where search and the use of the information are fully integrated. But non-experts tend to avoid authoritative primary sources such as scientific literature due to their complex language, internal vernacular, or lacking prior background knowledge. Text simplification approaches can remove some of these barriers, thereby avoiding that users rely on shallow information in sources prioritizing commercial or political incentives rather than the correctness and informational value. The CLEF 2021 SimpleText track addresses the opportunities and challenges of text simplification approaches to improve scientific information access head-on. We aim to provide appropriate data and benchmarks, starting with pilot tasks in 2021, and create a community of NLP and IR researchers working together to resolve one of the greatest challenges of today. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

37. Equatorial Pitch Angle Distributions of 1-50 keV Electrons in Earth's Inner Magnetosphere: An Empirical Model Based on the Van Allen Probes Observations

Abstract

Using 7 years of data from the Helium, Oxygen, Proton, and Electron instrument on the Van Allen Probes, equatorial pitch angle distributions (PADs) of 1-50 keV electrons in Earth's inner magnetosphere are investigated statistically. An empirical model of electron equatorial PADs as a function of radial distance, magnetic local time, geomagnetic activity, and electron energy is constructed using the method of Legendre polynomial fitting. Model results show that most equatorial PADs of 1-10s of keV electrons in Earth's inner magnetosphere are pancake PADs, and the lack of butterfly PADs is likely due to their relatively flat or positive flux radial gradients at higher altitudes. During geomagnetically quiet times, more anisotropic distributions of 1-10s of keV electrons at dayside than nightside are observed, which could be responsible for moderate chorus wave activities at dayside during quiet times as reported by previous studies. During active times, the anisotropy of 1-10s of keV electrons significantly enhances, consistent with the enhanced chorus wave activity during active times and suggesting the critical role of 1-10s of keV electrons in generating chorus waves in Earth's inner magnetosphere. Different enhanced anisotropy patterns of different energy electrons are also observed during active times: at R > similar to 4 R-E, keV electrons are more anisotropic at dawn to noon, while 10s of keV electrons have larger anisotropy at midnight to dawn. These differences, combined with the statistical distribution of chorus waves shown in previous studies, suggest the differential roles of electrons with different energies in generating chorus waves with different properties.

38. Applications of SNP-based apple pedigree identification to regionally specific germplasm collections and breeding programs

Abstract

A wealth of previously unknown pedigree information has been generated for apple (Malus × domestica) through recent studies and an ongoing pedigree identification project using SNP array data. This information has been postulated to be useful in a number of ways for germplasm collections and breeding programs. For example, pedigree information is an important part of genetic characterization of material in germplasm collections. Germplasm collections often seek to preserve cultivars that currently lack commercial relevance but have regional or historical significance or are phenotypically interesting. Pedigree information is often limited on such material. With pedigree information, an accurate genetic structure of these collections can be conveyed to breeders who wish to incorporate novel germplasm into new cultivars. To illustrate ways in which this newly generated pedigree information can be used, we provide examples involving accessions from the germplasm collection Ökowerk and the breeding association “apfel:gut e.V.”, which focus in the development of apples for regional organic production. Both organizations are located in northern Germany. Despite focusing on regional apple cultivars and genetic diversity, many of their accessions and breeding lines are common, cosmopolitan, and foundational cultivars. However, the SNP-based analyses also reveal regionally specific founders, not true-to-type accessions, and genetically unique historical cultivars. This new information has benefitted these organizations by providing genetic characterization that was previously lacking, enabling them to better utilize these genetic resources. Additionally, this information will also be useful in the context of an ongoing larger scale apple pedigree reconstruction project.

Abstract

In this paper, we provide an overview of the ninth annual edition of the CLEF eHealth evaluation lab. CLEF eHealth 2021 continues our evaluation resource building efforts around the easing and support of patients, their next-of-kins, health care professionals, and health scientists in understanding, accessing, and authoring electronic health information in a multilingual setting. The 2021 lab offered two tasks: Task 1 on multilingual Information Extraction (IE), this year extending to a corpus of Spanish radiology reports; and Task 2 on Consumer Health Search (CHS) that builds on the previous year’s Information Retrieval (IR) tasks. In total, 11 teams took part in these tasks (7 in Task 1 on IE and 4 in Task 2 on IR). Herein, we describe the resources created for these tasks and the evaluation methodology adopted, and we provide a brief summary of the participants of this year’s challenges as well as the results obtained. As in previous years, the organizers have made data, tools, and more specific overview papers associated with the lab tasks available for future research and development.

Abstract

Sand nourishment is often used as coastal protection as it has fewer negative side effects compared to hard structures. When positioned at the shoreface, the nourishment can protect the beach by acting as a feeder mechanism, but also force waves to break earlier thereby reducing the amount of wave energy that reaches the beach (the sheltering effect). There have been many field measurements on the effect of shoreface nourishments (see e.g. van Duin et al, 2004). These have provided valuable insights, but are very case specific, and there are still very few detailed experimental nourishment studies performed in controlled environments (see e.g. Walstra et al., 2010 and Grasso et al., 2011). The few experimental studies make it difficult to formulate clear nourishment strategies, and there are e.g. different opinions on where in the cross-shore profile the nourished sand should be positioned. van Rijn et al (2011) stated that a nourishment is most efficient when placed landwards of the innermost bar crest and that the bar trough should always be filled, which supported the laboratory results from Walstra et al. (2010). However, the experiments by Grasso et al (2011) showed little difference between nourishing the crest or the trough. In this study we add to this debate and investigate the influence of nourishment spatial positioning as well as the influence of the temporal positioning, i.e. the timing of the nourishment with respect to the “equilibrium”.
