Abstract

The Arctic environment is changing rapidly. A range of observing approaches is being used to increase our understanding of the environment and to mobilize sound decisions in response. To demonstrate ‘real world’ examples of the benefits of cross-weaving data from local and scientific observation systems, we have prepared a series of policy briefs. The key observations and recommendations in the policy briefs are summarized. Through dialogue with civil society organizations, research institutions and the local authorities, we have identified four topics of high priority to local communities where local/citizen-based and scientific observations are important and where recommendations for better-informed decisions and better-documented processes are pertinent: − Local and scientific observations for improving fisheries in Greenland − Natural disasters in Disko Bay, Greenland − Monitoring Svalbard’s environment and cultural heritage by expedition cruises − Natural disasters in Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Abstract

The influence of surface melt on the flow of Greenland's largest outlet glaciers remains poorly known and in situ observations are few. We use field observations to link surface meltwater forcing to glacier-wide diurnal velocity variations on East Greenland's Helheim Glacier over two summer melt seasons. We observe diurnal variations in glacier speed that peak ~6.5 h after daily maximum insolation and extend from the terminus region to the equilibrium line. Both the amplitude of the diurnal speed variation and its sensitivity to daily melt are largest at the glacier terminus and decrease up-glacier, suggesting that the magnitude of the response is controlled not only by melt input volume and temporal variability, but also by background effective pressure, which approaches zero at the terminus. Our results provide evidence that basal lubrication by meltwater drives diurnal velocity variations at Greenland's marine-terminating glaciers in a similar manner to alpine glaciers and Greenland's land-terminating outlet glaciers. Abstract

We have studied 2-D time-dependent convection for a rheology which is both non-Newtonian and temperature-dependent. Strong effects associated with viscous heating are found in the downwelling sheets, which are heated on both sides with an intensity around O(100) times the chondritic value. The magnitude of viscous heating increases strongly with the subduction speed. The slab interior is weakened by viscous heating and slab breakoff then takes place. This process provides a self-regulating mechanism for governing the speed of intact slabs able to reach the deep mantle. Timescales associated with viscous heating are quite short, a few million years. Internal heating by radioactivity decreases the amount of shear heating.

Indvinding af skifergas har i de senere år påkaldt sig stigende interesse internationalt og i Danmark.På den baggrund har Miljø- og Fødevareministeriet bedt DTU, GEUS og DCE om at indgå en konsortieaftale om at udarbejde en videnskabelig udredning.Formålet med den videnskabelige udredning er at sætte international viden om indvinding af skifergas i relation til en dansk kontekst.I udredningen redegøres der for de regionale geologiske forhold i skifergasproduktion i Danmark, boring og effekt af boring og frakturering, og der foretages en analyse af de mulige påvirkninger af miljø og vandressourcer samt landskab og trafik.På den baggrund gives der indledningsvist en overordnet beskrivelse af skifergas, forventet anvendt teknologi i forbindelse med skifergasproduktion samt en beskrivelse af mulige miljøpåvirkninger og tilgængelige afværgeforanstaltninger.Den videnskabelige udredning indeholder også en screening af de risici og farer, der kunne være forbundet med skifergasindvinding i Danmark.

29. Crust and uppermost-mantle structure of Greenland and the Northwest Atlantic from Rayleigh wave group velocity tomography.

Abstract

The Greenland landmass preserves ~4 billion years of tectonic history, but much of the continent is inaccessible to geological study due to the extensive inland ice cap. We map out, for the first time, the 3-D crustal structure of Greenland and the NW Atlantic ocean, using Rayleigh wave anisotropic group velocity tomography, in the period range 10-80 s, from regional earthquakes and the ongoing GLATIS/GLISN seismograph networks. 1-D inversion gives a pseudo-3-D model of shear wave velocity structure to depths of ~100 km with a horizontal resolution of ~200 km. Crustal thickness across mainland Greenland ranges from ~25 km to over 50 km, and the velocity structure shows considerable heterogeneity. The large sedimentary basins on the continental shelf are clearly visible as low velocities in the upper ~5-15 km. Within the upper continental basement, velocities are systematically lower in northern Greenland than in the south, and exhibit a broadly NW-SE trend. The thinning of the crust at the continental margins is also clearly imaged. Upper-mantle velocities show a clear distinction between typical fast cratonic lithosphere (Vs ≥4.6 kms-1) beneath Greenland and its NE margin and anomalously slow oceanic mantle (Vs ~4.3-4.4 kms-1) beneath the NW Atlantic. We do not observe any sign of pervasive lithospheric modification across Greenland in the regions associated with the presumed Iceland hotspot track, though the average crustal velocity in this region is higher than that of areas to the north and south. Crustal anisotropy beneath Greenland is strong and complex, likely reflecting numerous episodes of tectonic deformation. Beneath the North Atlantic and Baffin Bay, the dominant anisotropy directions are perpendicular to the active and extinct spreading centres. Anisotropy in the subcontinental lithosphere is weaker than that of the crust, but still significant, consistent with cratonic lithosphere worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Large calving events at Greenlands largest outlet glaciers are associated with glacial earthquakes and nearinstantaneous increases in glacier flow speed. At some glaciers and ice streams, flow is also modulated in a regular way by ocean tidal forcing at the terminus. At Helheim Glacier, analysis of geodetic data shows decimeter-level periodic position variations in response to tidal forcing. However, we also observe transient increases of more than 100% in the glaciers responsiveness to such tidal forcing following glacial-earthquake calving events. The timing and amplitude of the changes correlate strongly with the step-like increases in glacier speed and longitudinal strain rate associated with glacial earthquakes. The enhanced response to the ocean tides may be explained by a temporary disruption of the subglacial drainage system and a concomitant reduction of the friction at the ice-bedrock interface, and suggests a new means by which geodetic data may be used to infer glacier properties.
