1. Confidence distributions for the autoregressive parameter

Abstract

The notion of confidence distributions is applied to inference about the parameter in a simple autoregressive model, allowing the parameter to take the value one. This makes it possible to compare to asymptotic approximations in both the stationary and the non stationary cases at the same time. The main point, however, is to compare to a Bayesian analysis of the same problem. A non informative prior for a parameter, in the sense of Jeffreys, is given as the ratio of the confidence density and the likelihood. In this way, the similarity between the confidence and non-informative Bayesian frameworks is exploited. It is shown that, in the stationary case, asymptotically the so induced prior is flat. However, if a unit parameter is allowed, the induced prior has to have a spike at one of some size. Simulation studies and two empirical examples illustrate the ideas.

5. Bartlett correction of an independence test in a multivariate Poisson model

Abstract

We consider a system of dependent Poisson variables, where each variable is the sum of an independent variate and a common variate. It is the common variate that creates the dependence. Within this system, a test of independence may be constructed where the null hypothesis is that the common variate is identically zero. In the present paper, we consider the maximum log likelihood ratio test. For this test, it is well-known that the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is an equal mixture of zero and a chi square distribution with one degree of freedom. We examine a Bartlett correction of this test, in the hope that we will get better approximation of the nominal size for moderately large sample sizes. This correction is explicitly derived, and its usefulness is explored in a simulation study. For practical purposes, the correction is found to be useful in dimension two, but not in higher dimensions., Comment: 66 pages, 10 figures

7. Discrete factor analysis

Abstract

In this paper, we present a method for factor analysis of discrete data. This is accomplished by fitting a dependent Poisson model with a factor structure. To be able to analyze ordinal data, we also consider a truncated Poisson distribution. We try to find the model with the lowest AIC by employing a forward selection procedure. The probability to find the correct model is investigated in a simulation study. Moreover, we heuristically derive the corresponding asymptotic probabilities. An empirical study is also included.

Abstract

A common problem with ranking lists (e.g., regarding success/failure proportions of treatments at hospitals) is that smaller units tend to end up either in the top or in the bottom just by pure chance. To alleviate this problem, we propose a method that, for a given unit, gives a confidence interval for the position of this unit within the distribution of the other units. The confidence interval is based on asymptotic normality. The method is illustrated by an empirical example. The small sample confidence level is investigated in a simulation study.
