Autism is a neurological disorder characterized by significant impairments in language/communication, deficits in social interaction and restricted interests/ stereotypical behavior. A primary concern is the significant communication deficits exhibited by learners with autism. These deficits place learners with autism at risk for poor outcomes (e.g., maladaptive behavior, academic and social deficits). These communication deficits are commonly addressed by both speech/language pathologists and behavior analysts. While both disciplines generally address similar goals, the tools used for the intervention process often differ. This paper reviews some of the key components for effective intervention for communication disorders in learners with autism from each discipline. Strategies for effective collaboration between these two fields to promote comprehensive programming and improve quality of service are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface states of liquid-encapsulated Czochralski and molecular beam epitaxy grown n-type GaAs samples coated with Na2S and (NH4)2S films are studied with deep level transient spectroscopy measurements employing metal-insulator-semiconductor structures. Two deep levels at 0.58 and 1.15 eV below the conduction-band edge are found in the as-grown samples. The Ec-0.58 eV deep level is found to be greatly reduced after sulfide treatment, while the Ec-1.15 eV deep level remains with a very high density. The surface Fermi level is shifted deeper into the energy band gap toward the Ec-1.15 eV deep level after surface treatment. This new, deeper pinning position is believed to be the cause of the greatly enhanced photoluminescence intensity recently reported. This new pinning position is deeper than some of the recently reported sodium sulfide/GaAs results but consistent with the high Schottky barrier height, 1.15 eV measured for the gallium-rich GaAs surface. Macrophages have important roles in mammary gland development and tissue homeostasis, but the specific mechanisms that regulate macrophage function need further elucidation. We have identified C/EBPβ as an important transcription factor expressed by multiple macrophage populations in the normal mammary gland. Mammary glands from mice with C/EBPβ-deficient macrophages ( Cebpb ΔM ) show a significant decrease in alveolar budding during the diestrus stage of the reproductive cycle, whereas branching morphogenesis remains unchanged. Defects in alveolar budding were found to be the result of both systemic hormones and local macrophage-directed signals. RNA sequencing shows significant changes in PR-responsive genes and alterations in the Wnt landscape of mammary epithelial cells of Cebpb ΔM mice, which regulate stem cell expansion during diestrus. Cebpb ΔM macrophages demonstrate a shift from a pro-inflammatory to a tissue-reparative phenotype, and exhibit increased phagocytic capacity as compared to WT. Finally, Cebpb ΔM macrophages down-regulate Notch2 and Notch3 , which normally promote stem cell expansion during alveolar budding. Background: Scedosporium is a lesser-known non-Aspergillus genus of mold that can present in unsuspecting ways. If overlooked, it may disseminate and cause high mortality in high-risk allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients., Case Presentation: This case report describes a 65-year-old patient with Acute Myeloid Leukemia who underwent an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant after a period of prolonged neutropenia with fluconazole prophylaxis. She suffered severe debility with altered mentation from a S. apiospermum infection which likely disseminated from a toe wound to the lung and central nervous system. She was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B and voriconazole, but faced a prolonged recovery from physical and neurologic sequela., Conclusions: The case highlights the importance of adequate anti-mold prophylaxis in high-risk patients, and the value of a thorough physical examination in this patient population, with particular attention to skin and soft tissue findings., (© 2023. Establishing diagnosis of latent and active histoplasmosis is challenging. Interferon gamma-release assays (IGRAs) may provide evidence of latent and active infection. An enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISpot) assay was developed using yeast cell lysate (YCL) antigen prepared from a representative North American Histoplasma capsulatum strain. Assay parameters were optimized by measuring responses in healthy volunteers with and without Histoplasma infection. Assay performance as an aid for diagnosing histoplasmosis was assessed in a prospective cohort of 88 people with suspected or confirmed infection, and 44 healthy controls enrolled in two centers in North America (2013 to 2018). Antigen specificity of IFN-γ release was demonstrated using ELISpot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antigen-evoked, single-cell mRNA expression by memory T cells was shown using flow cytometry. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was estimated at 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 78.5% to 99.9%). At optimal cutoff, sensitivity was 77.2% (95% CI: 54.6% to 92.2%) and specificity was 100% (95% CI: 89.7% to 100%). Sixteen of 44 healthy volunteers (36.4%) from a region of hyperendemicity had positive responses, suggesting detection of previously unrecognized (latent) infection. The ELISpot assay is sensitive and specific as an aid to diagnose H. capsulatum infection and disease, supporting proof of concept and further development.

We demonstrate a simple and compact approach to laser cool and trap atoms based on laser-induced thermal ablation (LITA) of a pure solid granule. A rapid thermalisation of the granule leads to a fast recovery of the ultra-high vacuum condition required for a long trapping lifetime of the cold gas. We give a proof-of-concept of the technique, performing a magneto-optical trap on the 461 nm [Formula: see text] transition of strontium. We get up to 3.5 million of cold strontium-88 atoms with a trapping lifetime of more than 4 s. The lifetime is limited by the pressure of the strontium-free residual background vapour. We also implement an original configuration of permanent magnets to create the quadruple magnetic field of the magneto-optical trap. The LITA technique can be generalized to other atomic elements such as transition metals and lanthanide atoms, and shows a strong potential for applications in quantum technologies ranging from quantum computing to precision measurements such as outdoor inertial sensing., (© 2022. Background: Accurate and timely methods for the diagnosis of histoplasmosis in resource-limited countries are lacking. Histoplasma antigen detection by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is widely used in the United States (US) but not in resource-limited countries, leading to missed or delayed diagnoses and poor outcomes. Lateral flow assays (LFAs) can be used in this setting., Methods: Frozen urine specimens were submitted to MiraVista diagnostics for antigen testing from 3 medical centers in endemic areas of the US. They were blinded and tested for the MVista Histoplasma LFA. Patients were classified as controls or cases of histoplasmosis. Cases were divided into proven or probable; pulmonary or disseminated; immunocompetent or immunosuppressed; and mild, moderate, or severe., Results: Three hundred fifty-two subjects were enrolled, including 66 cases (44 proven, 22 probable) and 286 controls. Most of the cases were immunocompromised (71%), and 46 had disseminated and 20 had pulmonary histoplasmosis. Four cases were mild, 42 moderate, and 20 severe. LFA and EIA were highly concordant (κ = 0.84). Sensitivity and specificity of the LFA were 78.8% and 99.3%, respectively. LFA sensitivity was higher in proven cases (93.2%), patients with disseminated (91.3%), moderate (78.6%), and severe disease (80%), and those with galactomannan levels >1.8 ng/mL (97.8%). Specificity was 99.3% in proven cases, 99.3% in patients with moderate or severe disease, and 96.8% in those with galactomannan levels >1.8 ng/mL. Cross-reactivity was noted with other endemic mycoses., Conclusions: The MVista Histoplasma LFA meets the need for accurate rapid diagnosis of histoplasmosis in resource-limited countries, especially in patients with high disease burden, potentially reducing morbidity and mortality., (© The Author(s) 2021.
